Sambasunda Quintet
Groundbreaking gamelan innovators SambaSunda have a flair for experimentation with new ideas, both forwards and backwards in tradition. In their latest incarnation, Sambasunda strip down to a quintet, reflecting an enduring classical tradition of Sundanese music while at the same time creating something fresh, modern and original.
Friday 17th February at 7.30pm
The music is centred on the kacapi, a boat-shaped zither whose mellifluous tones have been heard in Sunda (West Java) for centuries. It’s a haunting and evocative sound which connects to the Sundanese soul and poetry often singing of displacement, longing and melancholy. Using kacapi, violin, suling (bamboo flute) and the unique, tuned kendang drums to accompany a truly stunning singer (and dancer!) Mae gan Sambasunda, yr arloeswyr gamelan blaengar, ddawn am arbrofi gyda syniadau newydd sy’n symud ymlaen ac yn ôl yn mewn tradddodiad. Ar eu gwedd ddiweddaraf, mae Sambasunda yn bumawd sy’n adlewyrchu traddodiad clasurol parhaus o gerddoriaeth Sundanaidd, ac ar yr un pryd yn creu rhywbeth ffres, cyfoes a gwreiddiol. ^ Mae’r gerddoriaeth yn canolbwyntio ar y kacapi, sither siap cwch y mae ei donau melodaidd melys wedi’u clywed yn Sunda (Gorllewin Java) ers canrifoedd. Mae’n creu sain swynol ac atgofus sy’n cysylltu ag enaid a barddoniaeth y Sunda sy’n aml yn canu am ddadleoli, hiraeth a’r felan. Yn defnyddio kacapi, feiolin, suling (ffliwt bamboo) a’r drymiau Kendang cyweiriedig, unigryw yn gyfeiliant i ganwr (a dawnsiwr) gwirioneddol drawiadol! E

Juju Saturday 19th May at 7.30pm Justin Adams & Juldeh Camara’s style is raw and gutsy Afro-Blues. Adams’ driving guitar finds a perfect match in Gambian master musician and celebrated Griot Juldeh Camara’s hypnotic playing and powerful voice. Adams brings Clash-style punk energy to West African trance rhythm while Camara - a Homeric bard who carries the traditions of his forefathers - creates a haunting sound with the riti (a single string violin). The son of an itinerant diplomat, Adams formed The Invaders Wobbleformed, and went on to create a legacy that spawned a multitude of reinventions from Robert Plant and Tinariwen to Natacha Atlas.

Headliner Silky, your former resident compere comes back to his old haunt to show-off all the shiny new jokes (and fiddly guitar riffs) that he’s developed playing the more salubrious gin joints and clam bakes of the international comedy scene. Don’t let support Rich Wilson’s rough, tough demeanour fool you - Rich is all of those things but so much more, smart, quick-witted with well observed jokes that’ll have you rolling around like you’re trying to quell a small fire. Resident compere James Cook is sure to have tons of amazing anecdotes about his recent foray into terrible daytime television. Daw’r prif berfformiwr, Silky, eich cyn-gyflwynydd arferol, yn ôl i’w hen gynefin i arddangos y jôcs newydd sbon. ^ gadael i ymddygiad garw, gwydn Rich Wilson, y Peidiwch a perfformiwr cefnogi, eich twyllo - mae’r nodweddion hyn i gyd yn perthyn i Rich ond mae e’n llawer mwy na hynny - yn glyfar, yn chwim ei feddwl a chanddo jôcs craff. ^ Fe’i clywyd fel llais DJ radio pennod o Doctors, ac mae’n siwr bod gan y cyflwynydd arferol, James Cook, lawer o anecdotau rhyfeddol am ei brofiad diweddar ym myd teledu dydd ofnadwy.

Maria Lalic 4th - 27th January Maria’s Creative Textile Art and Embroidery work has been informed by the ruggedly beautiful but ravaged landscape of Glamorgan. She is also inspired by her interest in the concept of Anima Loci (the possibility of a spiritual existence in nature, landscape and place) which she still feels has particular resonance in Wales and for the Welsh. Maria Lalic’s work is an echo of the landscape, legend and people of her native Glamorgan. She hopes that her wall hangings go some way towards giving voice to the past and creating a story for the future.

Justine Johnson and Dalit Leon - Of This World and The Other 29 Feb - 23 March Justine Johnson: “The women who worked in the South Wales Industries that drove the Empire have intrigued me. As an artist working with both textile and metals and sharing the landscape and culture and space left by this generation I felt an immediate connection.” Dalit Leon is inspired by natural forms and forces, spatial fluidity and infinity, consciousness and dream-these meditational pieces are intuitive and process led, operating as pathways between internal and external, material and essential realities.
‘Sorry I Don’t Eat Fish’ Exhibition of Art & Poetry 28 March - 20 April Whether you believe it’s man-made, God’s will or just natural forces climate change is happening and we all have to adapt to survive. This exhibition by artist Ieuan Rhys Daniel and writer Janet Daniel is their creative response to the challenge of climate change and celebrates the natural world.
Jane Davies. - Metier Mosaics 25 April - 25 May Jane’s mosaics are created from recycled china and jewellery. They are mounted on reclaimed quarry tiles, urinals and toilets. Her work often reflects a social comment or political message and she always aims to amuse and tell a story.

John Howes Landworks: mixed-media responses to the landscape 30 May - 29 June John Howes lives and works on a farm. Much of his artwork explores the relationship between the land and the intervention of man. “The environment of the farm is a constant ‘touchstone’ for him, and making work with and from the very substance of a location is paramount, whether as an intervention at a particular site or as site-derived works for exhibition elsewhere.” www.johnhowes.co.uk
