Come out to play!
Are You Ready “Vini! Come! The field calls!” cries a girl as she and her younger brother rouse their community—family, friends, and the local fruit vendor—for a pickup soccer (futbol) game. Boys and girls, young and old, players and spectators come running— bringing balls, shoes, goals, and a love of the sport. “Friends versus friends” teams are formed, the field is cleared of cows, and the game begins! But will a tropical rainstorm threaten their plans? The world’s most popular and inclusive sport has found its spirited, poetic, and authentic voice in Baptiste Paul’s debut picture book.
Baptiste Paul Born and raised in the West Indies (St. Lucia), Baptiste Paul is a native Creole/Patois speaker and enjoys roasting his own coffee and chocolate. He holds a BS in Environmental Science and a BS in Political Science and currently resides with his family near a wildlife sanctuary in Green Bay, Wisconsin. It’s spring and bees, flowers, and love are in the air! Mr. Squirrel’s friend, Hedgehog, has fallen in love. Unsure of how to win the lady hedgehog’s heart, he turns to Mr. Squirrel for advice. Mr. Squirrel knows all about love, and what ladies like. Ladies like heroes! But what will happen when Mr. Squirrel and his friend set out to conquer the most dangerous animal in the forest?
“ Meschenmoser’s soft pencil portraits of the squirrel’s inner fears teeter right at the weet spot between anguish and humor. The story’s deepest pleasure comes from the contrast between its ever-more-ridiculous scenarios and the artist’s solemn, classically proportioned drafting style. ” Publishers Weekly, on Mr. Squirrel and the Moon

27 Every child who goes fishing dreams of catching the biggest, most beautiful fish in the world. . . . The hero of this tender, glowingly illustrated story catches a fish so large and splendid that he takes it home and puts it in the bathtub so he can keep it forever. He picks flowers from the fields to make his fish feel at home. He reads it stories about animal friends. But the fish is sad—and because the boy likes his fish so much and wants it to be happy, he learns a real lesson about love. Max Velthuijs, one of Holland’s foremost graphic artists, has created lovely, bright colored pictures that are at once realistic and full of childlike fantasy. The Little Boy and the Big Fish is a memorable book—jolly, sad, and wise—with the honest emotion that children will recognize as their own.

Martin, a Russian shoemaker, wishes to meet Jesus. Instead he finds three strangers in need. After showing kindness toward each one, Martin learns that it was Jesus who visited him three times. This beautiful story about sharing is a joy to read at Christmas or anytime throughout the year!
How it all began . . .
“In summer 1967 I heard about The Frankfurt Book Fair. It sounded wonderful. I only had 50 pounds to my name but decided to spend some of that on the train fare to Frankfurt. When I got to the main gate of the Fair I was refused entry as I didn’t have a ticket. Luckily, the secretary from Dobson Books was passing and smuggled me in! She asked me where I was staying so I told her I planned to sleep at the station. She must have taken pity on me as she snuck me into her hotel room where there was a spare bed. She told me illustrators did not usually come to the Fair, it was publishers only, but I don’t give up easily. I started trawling the aisles, showing my work when I saw this small, wonderful, colourful stand. NordSüd Verlag [NorthSouth Books] were too busy to see me at first, so I returned six times until they did. Eventually the publisher came and said ‘I know you, kid, we met in London last year. What do you want?’ sketches of Little Red Riding Hood.” (Bernadette Watts) . . . and the rest is history.
