Welcome to Chicz! Are you a busy woman? Or maybe I should ask: Do you know a woman who isn’t busy? The fast pace of today’s lifestyle has women of all ages overwhelmed with work and family responsibilities to the point that it is taking its toll on their physical and emotional health. Researchers have all kinds of names for it – hurried woman syndrome, busy woman syndrome, Wonder Woman syndrome… but most busy women just call it a life of INSANITY! One of my favorite “me” hobbies is reading. But often my “me time” only comes in small snippets – 5 minutes here, 10 minutes there… hardly enough time to get back into the plot of the hottest Tara Bitzan new fiction novel on the market. So during those little bursts of me time, I do the next best thing – pick up a magazine. So, busy ladies, I encourage you to take a deep breath, find yourself a quiet corner and relax with our new and improved women’s magazine, Chicz! This quarterly magazine is designed to entertain you, energize you, share ideas and more, all in quick, easy-to-read formats that will fit perfectly into your busy schedule. We’d love to hear from you! Please send us a note on what you think of Chicz or share your ideas with us for future issues. Enjoy! hot styles for fall include texture, texture,
texture! By In Styles Salon & Spa, Alexandria
Texture, texture and more texture is what’s hot this fall. Whether it’s the beachy wave look or the casual messy bun, as long as you have movement, you’re good! Try wrapping your hair around a curling iron for a more relaxed look, or go a little edgier with a middle part. You can’t go wrong with either option. Blondes and brunettes are going more natural this fall with warmer honey tones, while redheads are tending to lean more toward bold auburn tones. The mess bob with lots of layers has been a favorite lately for short styles. For those of you who are less daring, adding layers and texture to your long locks will give you a new look that will have everyone talking!

verybody has a favorite scarf. But do you know how versatile it is? Not only can you tie it in several ways, but you can also pair it with anything in your closet. This fall, wear it with your favorite jean jacket or spice up your basic black purse. In the cold of winter, stack it with a cozy cardigan. Next summer, pair it with your favorite simple sundress and flip-flops. It’s an endless accessory you’ll love to play with!

Tired of the same old drink?
Why not give wine a swirl? By Al Edenloff Wine is for snobs. Or for the well-to-do. It’s that kind of thinking that causes some people to miss out on a whole new world of delicious tastes and flavorful fun. Sipping wine doesn’t have to be hoitytoity or budget busting. It can be casual and relaxed – adding a splash of fun to a special date night or a good excuse for a wine-tasting get-together with family and friends. Don’t worry about undertaking exhaustive research to come up with that perfect combination of food and wine. Winging it is half the fun! If you’ve never thought about giving wine a swirl, here are three simple things to try:
A zing of zin Buy a bottle of zinfandel from California (not white zinfandel but the deep dark red stuff). Buy some olives (not the ones that come in a can but the ones from the olive bars found in most grocery stores). Select kalamata olives (stuffed with cheese), jumbo Sicilian green olives, spicy-seasoned olives – get as adventurous as you’d like. Also, pick up some smoked almonds and a hunk or two of good quality cheese like Asiago, a wellaged Gouda, Pecorino or Gruyre. Now, try an olive, an almond or a bite of cheese and follow it with a sip of zin. The flavors should all come together in a delectable harmony of smokiness, salty-sweetness and deep nutty flavors that linger long after the sip.
Or not. But that’s half the fun, trying to find out which olive, which cheese, which nut works the best with what you’re sipping.
A classic cabernet connection This experience has been known to cause even die-hard beer drinkers to stow away their suds, at least for supper. Buy a bottle of cabernet sauvignon (you don’t have to spend a fortune but you should avoid the really cheap stuff). Grill a thick Tbone, ribeye or sirloin steak to medium rare. Don’t mess with putting anything on it except for a shake or two of salt and pepper. After letting the steak rest a bit, savor a bite with a sip of cab. Don’t expect angels to start singing but it can be pretty close. The fat and flavor of the meat is picked up and elevated to a new dimension by the bold cab. You can taste the fruit, berries and other elements of the wine, along with the heightened smoky, meaty flavors of the steak. By itself, the cab may be too dry for some palettes but with the steak it’s softer, juicier, lingering. Perfection.
A chardonnay combo To get your taste buds dancing with a white wine, try this: Pick up a bottle of chardonnay and a small block of Havarti cheese. Cut an unpeeled pear into wedges and put a slice of cheese on top of one. Pop it in your mouth and take a sip of chard. Wow! The creaminess of the cheese rockets to a new level as it mingles with the sweet, buttery tones of the wine. Meanwhile, the fresh crispness of the pear is accented by the chardonnay’s bright fruitiness. It all works. So there you have it. A few simple ideas to get you started on exploring the wonderful world of wines. Cheers!
Sober Spirits By Crystal Dey Cups of cheer don’t necessarily need to be spiked this cider season. Try this non-alcoholic alternative to spice up your autumn.
Crystal’s Celestial Spiced Cider 6 cups apple cider 1/2 tsp. whole cloves 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg 3 cinnamon sticks (add while brewing) Cinnamon sticks for garnish 1-inch peeled fresh ginger sliced 1 vanilla bean, split and scraped OR 2 tsp. of vanilla extract Combine ingredients in sauce pan and heat to boiling over medium-high heat. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered 10 minutes. Strain and pour into mugs, garnish with cinnamon sticks.

It’s PUMPKIN season! By Lori Mork
Y
ou’ve noticed them – wood smoke lingering in the air, fresh pine, crisp breezes, warm apple cider and cinnamon – the wonderful smells of fall. Probably one of the most enticing aromas
is the smell of pumpkin as ovens heat up and pies, breads and cookies emerge.
Here are a few mouth-watering pumpkin recipes – tested and approved – to help usher in the fall.
Pumpkin Crunch Cake INGREDIENTS: 1 box yellow cake mix 1 can (15 oz) pumpkin puree 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk 3 large eggs
1 1/2 cups sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. salt 1 1/2 cups chopped pecans 1 cup butter, melted
DIRECTIONS: Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease bottom of 9 x 13 pan. Mix pumpkin, milk, eggs, sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Pour mixture into greased pan. Sprinkle dry cake mix over pumpkin mixture and top with pecans. Drizzle melted butter over pecans. Bake 50-55 minutes.

Paradise Pumpkin Pie INGREDIENTS: 1 8-oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1 slightly beaten egg 1 pastry for single-crust pie
1 1/4 cups canned pumpkin 1 cup evaporated milk 2 beaten eggs 1/4 cup packed brown sugar 1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/2 cup chopped pecans 2 Tbsp. butter, softened 2 Tbsp. all-purpose flour 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
DIRECTIONS: In small bowl, beat cream cheese, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, vanilla and 1 egg with electric mixer on medium until smooth. Chill in refrigerator for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, on lightly floured surface, slightly flatten pastry for single-crust pie. Roll dough from center to edge into a 12 circle. Wrap pastry around rolling pin. Unroll into 9 pie plate, being careful not to stretch it. Turn cream cheese mixture into pastry-lined plate. Trim pastry to 1/2 inch beyond edge of plate. Fold under extra pastry. Crimp edge. In medium bowl, combine pumpkin, evaporated milk, 2 eggs, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg. Pour over cream cheese mixture. Cover edge of pie with foil. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Remove foil; bake 25 minutes more. Meanwhile, combine pecans, butter, flour and 2 Tbsp. brown sugar. Sprinkle over pie. Bake 10-15 minutes or until a knife inserted in center comes out clean. Cool on wire rack. YIELD: Makes 1 pie (8 servings).
Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bundt Cake INGREDIENTS: 3/4 cup butter, softened 1-1/2 cups sugar 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla extract
2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 can (15 oz.) solid-pack pumpkin
1 cup (6 oz.) semisweet chocolate chips 2 oz. unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled 3/4 cup finely chopped pecans, divided
DIRECTIONS: In large bowl, cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and cinnamon; add to creamed mixture alternately with pumpkin, beating well after each addition. Fold in chocolate chips. Divide batter in half. Stir melted chocolate into one portion. In a well-greased 10-in. fluted tube pan, sprinkle 1/2 cup pecans. Spoon chocolate batter over pecans; top with pumpkin batter. Sprinkle with remaining pecans. Bake at 325 degrees for 65-70 minutes or until toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool for 15 minutes before removing from pan to a wire rack. YIELD: 12 servings.

A canvas is to an artist like fingernails are to… well, anyone! Of all the ways to express yourself, fingernails are some of the easiest and most unique ways to do it. There’s always the challenge of mastering painting with your nondominant hand, but that’s all part of the experience. Keep patterns simple or go completely psychedelic. It’s up to you. It’s a way to flaunt your personality loud and proud. Here’s a fun design that looks great whether you’re at work or hanging out with friends.
Newsprint Nails Grab a newspaper and cut out 10 small squares (fingernail size) from the text. It doesn’t matter what the text says because it’ll be backwards on your nails when you are done. Set those aside for now. Start with a base coat and then paint a few coats of a tan or gray color. After the polish is completely dry, dip your finger and one of the newspaper pieces in some water. Press the newspaper to your nail and hold it there. Be careful not to move it or the print will blur. Peel the newspaper off and repeat the process with the rest of your nails. Use polish remover on a cotton swab to tidy up the skin around your nails. Finally, paint a top coat over the nails to keep the print from coming off. Et voila! You’ve now got a chic design that looks like you went through a printing press! Tip: Base coats Tired of your polish chipping right away? Dislike the yellow stain removed polish leaves behind? If so, you might want to invest in a base coat. Base coats help prolong the life of your polish, give polish a smooth surface and, most importantly, protect your nails from polish stains and potentially harmful substances in the polish. You can get a decent quality base for less than $5.

When it comes to makeup... less is One of the biggest makeup mistakes teenagers make is simply wearing too much of it. Too much foundation, too much blush, too much eye shadow, too much foundation... The key to beauty is: Less is more!
Foundation Teens are blessed with young, healthy, glowing skin, so there is no reason to cover it up with foundation! If you want to cover pimples or blemishes, do so with a spot concealer. If oily skin is a problem, simply apply a little powder to make your face matte. Otherwise, spare the expense of foundation until you are older and have more to hide!
Blush This is often one of the first makeup items that young girls will experiement with, often very heavily! A little blush on your cheeks will add just enough of a rosy glow. Choose the best color for your skin tone. If you aren’t sure what color is best for you, ask a beauty professional, or choose a natural peach shade, which works well with all skin tones.
more!
Eye shadow Eye shadow isn’t necessary on a daily basis; you may want to save it for special occassions. If you do wear it, avoid dark or unnatural colors like green or purple and again, less is more! Eye shadow is only meant to accentuate the eyes - not overpower them!
Mascara Mascara is another item to use with caution. When applied too thick, it looks clumpy and often smears, giving a raccoon effect. Choose a color that complements your skin and hair color. Many girls often opt for black, but if you have blond or light hair, use a brown mascara for the best results.
Lip color Gloss is the best bet for teens - leave the darker shades for the older crowd! Choose a gloss that's similar to your natural lip color and strive to enhance your natural lips, not create a fake look.
Better doesn’t mean it costs more, it simply means
it’s better.

Glassware Serving Piece Old glassware can easily be transformed into a beautiful serving piece or garden accent by following a few quick steps. Create multiple tiers for a unique cupcake display, or use small pieces for a candle holder. On a budget? Plastic plates, bowls and cups from the dollar store will also work! Collect plates, bowls, vases, etc. in coordinating colors to use for your design. Carefully stack them together in different arrangements to see which design works the best. Line the touching edges with Marine Goop and press firmly. Goop can be found at a hardware or auto/marine store. Allow the piece to harden for several hours before putting any weight on it.
Reuse, reuse, reuse... Unconventional uses for everyday thrown-away items. Store more. Coffee creamer containers make great dry goods containers. Store small crackers or cookies, chocolate chips, sugar and more in them! Clean with corks. Corks from wine bottles have a variety of decorative uses, but if you’re more practical, try this handy cleaning tip: Use them with scouring powder to remove grime from dishes and utensils. Coil your cords. Toilet paper rolls make great cord-keepers. Simply coil or fold the cord and slip the cardboard tube over the coil. If it’s in a visible area, wrap the roll in gift wrap or fabric to match your décor.
Let our design team
pamper you!
Wipe your feet. Metal bottle caps can be turned into an outdoor boot/shoe scraper. Nail them to a board in rows of 8 to 12 with fluted edges pointing upward and say goodbye to muddy shoes.
Decode your cords. If you’re always tracing power cords to the source to figure out what’s what, write the appliance name on a plastic bread bag clip and place it on the cord near the power strip. No more confusion!

The Secrets of Mary Bowser a Novel by Lois Leveen Who would have guessed that I would find a Civil War-era historic novel set in Richmond, Virginia while travelling in Ireland? I stopped in a bookshop in Ennis and discovered Lois Leveen’s book, The Secrets of Mary Bowser. There are few facts known about Mary Bowser’s life but we do know she was a black slave who served the prominent Van Lew family in their Richmond mansion. She was freed and educated in Philadelphia but eventually came back to Richmond and was part of a spy-ring that passed vital Confederate military information to Union leadership. Biographies and at least one historic novel have been written about Elizabeth By Kathleen Pohlig (or “Lizzie” or “Bet”) Van Lew and some of her surviving diaries mention Mary. Records from St. John’s Church in Richmond (the site of Patrick Henry’s “Give me liberty or give me death” speech) provide evidence of both Mary’s baptism and marriage there, an unusual occurrence for any black slave. Leveen, with Harvard degrees in both literature and history, first came across the name Mary Bowser in a book of

… about a couple who decides to start out their family by getting a dog (Marley) who ends up being a bit more than they bargained for. I like reading books that have been made into movies so I can compare the two. I always like the book better because it offers more detail and paints a better story than the movie can. I am enjoying the book… it’s lighthearted and an easy read even though there are a few serious parts mixed in. With me being at college away from my famiKrista Jennissen ly and our dog, it is nice Garfield to read about what I am missing most from home. I would definitely recommend this book!
… the story of second generation Americans in the late 1880s, covering 50 years of their journey adjusting to faith, language and customs in the “melting pot of America” while establishing a family. At my age, I read to be entertained and I love a happy ending. I also love historical fiction - it exposes me to other cultures and renews my appreciation of history worldwide. I also selected it because it is available for Kindle readers. Our library has them available and I love the process of checking them out online. I would recommend it to others looking for entertainment and a Kathryn strong story LeBrasseur line. Alexandria

women’s history. Intrigued, she set out to learn more, and the result is a rich, historically accurate story of the life of a young slave woman prior to and during the Civil War. An only child, Mary is lucky to live and work with her mother and to visit her father regularly. She is bright and eager to learn; her photographic memory is later key to her ability to retain information when she plays the role of an illiterate slave in the home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. In Philadelphia, Mary learned racism was not limited to the South and struggled to learn the “rules” of living in a racist, classist and sexist society. As the story develops, she grows in courage and confidence and we move with her through the struggles of everyday life, family sorrows, love and sacrifice as she learns that everything comes with a cost, even freedom. A story of historic interest with strong women characters, The Secrets of Mary Bowser is well worth the read! Kathleen Pohlig is owner of Cherry Street Books in Alexandria.

… about a girl named Hazel who has stage IV thyroid cancer that spread to her lungs. Having to carry around an oxygen tank at age 18 and being homeschooled by her protective Alyssa Welle mother causes Alexandria her to not see much of the world or have many friends. At a cancer support group she meets a boy who takes a fancy to her. So far, I really like the book. It is realistic fiction telling how life really is when you have cancer as a teenager. I would definitely recommend it to others for a reality check. Sometimes we need to wake up and realize we are fortunate to have the lives we have.
…Fiammetta, a courtesan, and her business partner, a dwarf named Bucino, work to overcome losing everything in the 1527 fall of Rome to rebuild a profitable, socially acceptable business. Their return to her hometown is strained by damage to her beauty and lack of financial means. She reconnects with an acquaintance who seems to possess healing powers; the friendship leads them down an unexpected path. I am enjoying it primarily Michelle Ahlquist because of Garfield the glimpse it gives into that part of history. The story is interesting. I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.
guilt trip It doesn’t quite seem right. I asked if I could write a hunting column for the Echo Press this fall. I was given permission, but, was also asked to write a column for a new women’s publication called Chicz. So here I am, an outdoor/sports reporter and every woman’s go-to for how to keep their man happy. I dare you to find a journalist with a broader range of expertise. If these first few paragraphs don’t instill much confidence in my know-how, be comforted in the fact that I am married. My wife and I dated through college and made it through two years of living four hours apart before tying the knot on By Eric Morken October 30, 2010. We are expecting a late Christmas present this winter with our first child being due on New Year’s Eve. There are a lot of reasons why I wanted to spend the rest of my life with Mali, but one thing that stood out about her was how accommodating she has been throughout our relationship. I have always had other passions in my life and she understood that and allowed me to pursue them. In college, it was about spending time with friends. I never wanted to be the guy who disappeared from the social scene when he got a girlfriend. I wanted the whole college experience of meeting new people and taking advantage of opportunities on campus. Mali was much more reserved in social settings, but she understood the proper balance of us spending time together and having other lives outside of our relationship. Don’t underestimate how important that is to most guys. A girl who wants to be with you but doesn’t have to be with you is attractive. It’s ideal when both have passions they are able to pursue as individuals. I love knowing I can go on a hunting trip and Mali can spend time with friends and family doing what she likes to do. Guys hate embarking on an adventure with guilt lingering in the back of their mind. So remember to save the guilt-trip for things that really matter. That way, we’ll know for sure when we’re thinking of doing something stupid.

Don’t quit being fit with summer’s end ummer in Minnesota is a great time for activities that can help get and keep us fit. Many people rise early to go outside and get in a daily walk or run. Longer daylight means golf courses offer evening leagues for people that work 8 to 5. From sunrise to sunset, trails are busy with people of all ages hiking, biking and rollerblading. And hobbies unique to summer, such as yard work and gardening, are good ways to burn some extra calories and tone up. But as temperatures cool and daylight hours shorten, don’t be tempted to quit being fit. There are benefits to fall fitness. With the busy summer over, it’s a great time to get a jump start on your New Year’s resolution.
S
Schedule it! For those with school-age children, back-to-school means back to a regular schedule. The best way to be consistent and committed to working out is to plan it into your schedule. The ideal amount of time to work out each day is half an hour, but three 10minute sessions count.
Cover the basics Workouts should focus on the five different types of exercise:
By Elaine Munn
aerobic, muscle strengthening, stretching, core fitness and balance. These can be incorporated into daily life by taking the stairs, walking or by stretching or doing balancing exercises while watching the kids play soccer or the new fall line-up on TV.
Autumn’s benefits September is a “new year” for many gyms and fitness centers. Memberships drop due to students heading to college and snowbirds heading south. Clubs often offer incentives to join at this time, like a free trial week. This is not only a great way to try it out, but also to jump start a workout plan. It takes four weeks for the body to adapt to a lifestyle change, so a free week means you are 25 percent there! Other benefits of a gym include being surrounded with workout buddies, classes and shelter from inclement weather. Fall’s cooler temperatures, smells and colors are also an incentive to get outdoors. Cooler temperatures and lower dew points are more comfortable for high intensity workouts. During less vigorous activity, the cooler temps may prompt you to move a little faster and burn more calories.

Natural Cholesterol Control Cholesterol-lowering statins is one of the top selling classes of drugs in the history of American medicine, even though side effects may include liver damage, memory impairment, muscle weakness and pain. Many who start taking statins often don’t continue and instead seek natural approaches, often through diet. But compared to the cholesterol we get in food, the body makes five times more in the liver; that process can be controlled with exercise, healthy diet and supplements. Making cholesterol is only one of the liver’s jobs. When you exercise enough or eat fewer calories than needed, resulting in weight loss, the liver works harder to produce energy and makes less cholesterol. Exercise may also raise “good” By Deb Loken HDL cholesterol and reduce triglycerides, another type of blood fat that, when elevated, increases risk of diabetes, stroke and heart disease. To lower and maintain healthy cholesterol levels, the following supplements work best when combined with optimum diet and exercise.
For good health & a good life.
Fish Oil Omega-3 fats in fish oil may raise HDL cholesterol and reduce triglycerides. Essential for heart and overall health, omega-3 also may help control blood pressure and reduce inflammation and are key nutrients for preventing heart disease. Enteric-coated fish oil pills dissolve more slowly and eliminate fishy aftertaste.
Red Yeast Rice Part of the cholesterol lowering property of red yeast rice comes from a statin naturally present in the supplement. The natural statin works the same as statin drugs, by inhibiting an enzyme the liver requires to produce cholesterol, but red yeast rice has a gentler effect. Other natural ingredients in red yeast rice provide benefits above the statin effect, so a smaller dose delivers more benefits. Take CoEnzyme Q10 daily with red yeast rice for optimum benefits.
Policosanol Derived from sugar, policosanol reduces the production and recycling of cholesterol in the liver and may lower LDL “bad” cholesterol. Because it is an anticoagulant, it may increase bleeding risk if taken with blood thinning meds. Deb Loken is owner of The Grain Bin in Alexandria.

We have it all at the Viking Plaza Mall!
Women’s Pelvic Health Rehabilitation Women make most of the health care decisions for families. We schedule the appointments, make the clinic visits, and consider the health of our families to be our responsibility. But when it comes to our own health, we often ignore persistent problems or nagging aches and pains. We write it off as just another effect of getting older or a consequence of having children. Nowhere is this more evident than in the case of pelvic floor disorders. Pelvic floor disorders can be the cause of back pain, pelvic pain or incontinence. Many women try to live with these symptoms while managing a busy life. You may try to avoid lifting your children. It may cause you to have difficulty getting down to the floor to play with grandchildren. You might dread laughing, sneezBy Erin McCoy ing, coughing or jumping. You simply don’t have to live this way. Many treatment options exist that can dramatically improve symptoms arising from pelvic floor disorders. Simple dietary changes can decrease production of bladder irritants. Behavioral therapy, biofeedback, pelvic muscle rehabilitation, bladder training, and/or medications are available to help with urge incontinence, stress incontinence, and pain. All ages and both genders can benefit from pelvic rehabilitation: children with nighttime wetting, pregnant and post-partum women, peri-menopausal and menopausal women, women diagnosed with pelvic prolapse or pelvic pain, and men after prostatectomy or with benign prostate hyperplasia. In order to be at your best for everyone in your world, you need to be the strongest version of yourself. Seek help from a professional. Erin McCoy, PT, is director of rehabilitation services at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.

passwords strong can be both
and What’s the big deal?
simple
By Rich Aber
onsider this: If your computer password gets into the wrong hands, someone else can control your entire online
C
presence. If you use the same username/e-mail and password for your bank, Facebook, Twitter, eBay/PayPal, Google and iTunes accounts, you’ve given the “bad guys” the keys to your kingdom. They can empty your finan-
cial accounts, make bogus purchases on your dime, scam your friends and family, and lock you out of your digital life by changing the password before you even notice anything is wrong. The most common reason for using one password for multiple accounts is: “I can’t remember multiple passwords!” But there are tools available that can help manage multiple passwords, such as LastPass, which is recommended by many Internet security professionals. With these tools (many of them completely free), there is no excuse for using the same passwords for multiple systems, services and websites. If you use a password manager, be sure your master password is strong enough to resist attack. If someone were to crack your master password, they’ll be able to access all of your services, just as if you had used the same password across multiple services.
Here’s a sample of turning a plain-jane password into a strong password: Password phrase: I love hats and cats Substitution: !10v3#@t5&C@t$ Padding: ABCDE!10v3#@t5&C@t$54321
That’s a strong password, but fairly easy to remember...if you love hats and cats, that is! It isn’t difficult to protect yourself by increasing your password strength. Using a password management system with a strong master password can protect your online identity from “bad guys” on the net. Don’t become a victim. Rich Aber is IT specialist and web developer for Echo Press newspaper in Alexandria
Never use a single word, name or common phrase. Use a combination of uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols. Substitute plain letters for similar looking characters (examples: ^^ for “m, l> for “b” or @ for “a”.) Longer passwords take longer to crack, and padding (also called haystack technique) can make a simple, easy-toremember password more secure by adding additional characters before and after your typical password.

seeds
from stems
Make buying seeds a thing of the past when you harvest seeds from your own garden!
Flower seeds are formed after the flower itself has died. Wait until the petals dry and then look for seeds in the center of the flower or under the petals. Seeds must be harvested before they fall on the ground or they risk getting wet and/or moldy, making them unviable. Once seeds are visible, cut the stem of the flower and shake it gently over a small paper bag. Seeds should fall from the flower into the bag. If the seeds don’t easily fall from the flower, you may gently remove them using your fingers or a tweezers. Once removed, spread the seeds out on a paper towel to dry. Ensure the area is dry and free of drafts. Leave the seeds for up to a week, then store in an airtight container for next year’s planting.

give old towels
new life
After time, towels build up a residue of detergent, fabric softener and body oil that causes an unmistakable musty odor. Rather than turning them to rags and buying new, try this quick fix for musty towels! When empty, run your washing machine on a hot cycle with 2 cups of bleach to ensure it is free of bacteria, mold and other unwanted sludge. After the bleach cycle has completed, put towels in washing machine with one cup of vinegar and wash with hot water. Remove towels and replace them in the washing machine to loosen them post spin-cycle. Wash towels again in hot water, this time adding one half cup of baking soda. Dry towels according to care instructions, and enjoy the new fresh scent! Note: Laundry detergent and/or liquid fabric softener is not recommended for either wash.

faith fuels her fire
By Crystal Dey rowing up on a farm a stone’s throw away from Canada in the small Minnesota town of Hallock, Pastor Denise Croskey could see for miles from her yard in the Red River Valley. She was eventually drawn south to Douglas County where she has served the parishes of Trinity Lutheran in Holmes City and Oscar Lake Lutheran in rural Farwell since 2000. Pastor Croskey has been the longest serving pastor in the history of this parish since 1866. She lives with her husband, Phil, west of Holmes City overlooking lakes Grant, Blackwell and Echo.

What inspired you to become a pastor? I was inspired to become a pastor because I helped start a mission church several years ago. There were 50 of us who got together and said, “We need a Lutheran church in Sartell.” Thus, Celebration Lutheran came into being. As a mission start, I was needed to help with everything from reading Scripture to singing in the choir to organizing events within the church.

Where did you study theology? I began to take theology classes at nearby St. Ben’s and St. John’s. I just thrived while I was there. I eventually finished my studies at St. John’s School of Theology Master’s Program in Pastoral Ministry, immediately after going on to Luther Seminary in St. Paul for four years for a Masters of Divinity while commuting from Sartell. Interesting fact: Pastor Croskey was the only woman of 25 monks, priests and Catholic seminarians while studying at St. Jouh’s School of Theology in Israel in the early 1990s. What is the greatest challenge you face serving two churches? Making sure that I give equal time to both congregations. The churches are almost identical in membership and both churches need equal time. What’s great about living in Douglas County? It’s the best kept secret in the state. This is paradise at its finest. What are your passions or interests? My passions have always been travel and cooking. I wish I could say

reading a good book or listening to symphony, but it’s really about the challenge of traveling on my own and figuring out new airports, languages and cultures. I love to cook and have taken cooking classes. I love to invite guests for dinner and try new recipes. What can Generation Z learn from your generation? I tell my confirmation students all the time that there are only two things you can never lose in your lifetime and you need them both: an education and your soul. Nourish your soul with the love of Christ and get an education. Then you have won the victory on all counts.
That’s what Generation Z needs to learn, is to put God first in their life and then everything else will fall into place. Trust the Lord with all your heart and all your soul and all your might. money tipz 5
for women of all ages
1 2 3 4 5
Learn to be financially independent. Don’t rely on someone else – a spouse, parent, child. Educate yourself about money management. Many community education programs offer classes on various money topics, and there are professionals available to help you. Be involved in the day-to-day management of your household finances. Even if your spouse is the one who balances the checkbook and handles the bank accounts, make sure you know everything there is to know about these tasks and are capable of doing them if the need arises. And always know what your household’s financial situation is. Create a budget and stick to it. Draw up a budget showing how much you will spend each month on the necessities – rent or house payment, car payment, groceries, medical expenses, and so on. Then write down all avenues of income. Determine how much you want to set aside in savings and then work with what you have left over for the “extras” you’d like to invest in. The key is to spend less than you earn! As noted above, be sure to set money aside in savings each month. It is important to build an emergency fund. No one likes to think about losing a job or incurring an unexpected medical expense, but it could happen. It is best to be ready. Don’t be afraid of investing! Many people want to keep their money safely tucked away in a bank account where it earns regular – but often very minimal – interest. Talk to a financial planner, learn about the savings plans offered through your employer, and don’t let fear keep you from making the most of your money.

Breast cancer affects us all.
It affects our mothers, sisters, wives and friends. It affects people of every age, sex and race, and is the leading cancer among white and African-American women. This October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, pink is everyone’s color. Early detection can save lives, and mammograms are the most important tool in diagnosing breast cancer. There is no cure for breast cancer, but mammograms can save lives by finding breast cancer as early as possible. Every woman, beginning at age 40, should schedule a mammogram and a physical every year. Women should also perform a thorough breast self-exam once a month. Help spread awareness in your community by educating your neighbors and friends on the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, and encourage the women you know to schedule a mammogram today.
