A Trip to Scanno

Navy Prepares to  Face New Challenges A view of medieval buildings in Scanno found during a hike. (Photo by Michael Maddox) By Michael Maddox

Mountains, fresh air, forests and vistas; having been raised in Colorado, I was delighted to find all of these in Scanno, Italy. It’s a medieval town with a modern ski lift in the Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo, just a three-hour drive from Naples. Though new to me, Scanno’s pleasures are well known to Italians. During the day, many explore the narrow town walkways, hike the mountain trails, ride horses, fish at nearby Lake Scanno. At night, they are able to enjoy the town’s ambience and festivities.

I came for the hiking, so at 9 a.m. when the chairlift started, I ascended to the top of Monte Rontondo (€7 round trip, but cheaper for children). Most people ride up to look over the valley and to sit in the sun at the summit cafe while sipping a drink or eating a panino. Hikers continue past the chairlift for another two hours up a well-marked trail to the Carapale Pass and then to Monte Terrata, which is 2,208 meters high. The hike from Valico del Carapale to Monte Terrata and back again is not well marked, but there’s no getting lost since it’s along a ridgeline from which there is a 360 degree view of the

Apennines Mountains. Una bella vista! After a day of gorgeous views and strenuous uphill hiking, I was ready for a shower and a rest, which I enjoyed at my ski-lodgelike hotel, the Hotel Mille Pini. The price was inexpensive; the location great (five blocks from the central piazza and also near the chairlift) and the breakfast was sumptuous—a spread of meats, cereals, cheeses, fruits, juices, many artistically presented cakes and sweets, and cappuccino. These fortified me for exploration. See SCANNO Page 10

The U.S. Navy Dental Corps By Lt. Jeffrey K. Dean, USNH Naples Public Affairs

The U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Naples celebrated the 101st birthday of the Dental Corps with a cake-cutting ceremony, Aug. 29. The celebration included remarks from Capt. Matthew Pommer, Jr., commanding officer of USNH Naples, a dentist himself. The Dental Corps has a proud history, beginning with its establishment on Aug. 22, 1912. From 1912 until the present day, dental officers and technicians have served dutifully, ashore and abroad, in peacetime and in war, enabling the world’s finest Navy and Marine Corps to complete their missions. During World War I, the Navy’s Dental Corps grew to more than 500 officers as the Navy deployed dental officers on ships and with Marine units. Two Navy dental officers were awarded the Medal of Honor while serving with the Marine Corps in France. see NAVY DENTAL Page 6

Maintain Preparedness for Increased Force Protection Measures

By Capt. Scott Gray NSA Commanding Officer

Last weekend our community suffered another senseless tragedy on local roads, when a Petty Officer 2nd Class was killed while riding his motorcycle. After years of zero vehicular fatalities for U.S. service members in Naples, three in one calendar year seems unthinkable. The bottom line on this issue is that we must refocus on safety. Operational Risk Management dictates and sage individuals never leave themselves zero margin for error. Here in Naples, it is easy to fall into the often chaotic and breakneck Neapolitan driving style. These senseless deaths should make everyone pause and refocus on driving safety. Slow down, especially in bad weather and at night. If you are a motorcycle rider, ensure you have the proper training. NSA offers mandatory courses free of charge. The Basic Rider Course is required for all riders. For those who own sport bikes, an Advanced Rider Course is also a must. Failure to complete these courses is a violation of the UCMJ and may affect much more than your ability to ride. Non-compliance can impact line of duty determinations and benefits to your family. This is a very serious situation; we must treat it as such. Another area where I ask for your heightened awareness is our security. There is significant international unrest, the anniversary of 9/11 is nearly upon us, there was a protest against U.S. policy toward Syria in downtown Naples just this week. Be security conscious, no matter your location. If you see something, say something immediately. Earlier this week, we began double I.D. checks at our gates; be prepared for these and other security measures that may be implemented as the security situation dictates. Delays at the gate will occur should we go to a higher FPCON, so plan accordingly. Carpool with others, or make use of our shuttle buses to and from JFC and the support site. To save time at the gate, consider altering your schedule to before or after peak commute traffic. Security is everyone’s responsibility and all hands need to be part of the solution. Be patient and remember the security and safety of our mission, the facilities and most importantly our personnel and their families is our focus. A memorial service for IT2 Igrayeb will be held at 10 a.m. this morning at the Support Site Chapel; uniform for participants is dress blues, attendees is dress blues or uniform of the day. As we reflect on this tragedy, we must refocus our efforts on driving and safety. This weekend, I ask everyone to consider how we can all work together and what individual actions each of us can take to help improve our safety and security. It will take both individual dedication and collective efforts to maximize our mission effectiveness during this challenging time.

NSA Naples may implement increased force protection measures that will impact the community, should such changes be necessary. Please ensure that you carry additional identification and plan for a longer-than-normal wait time when trying to gain access to NSA Naples. Also, continue to track current events via open source news networks and contact your command’s Antiterrorism Office with any questions or concerns. The NSA Naples Antiterrorism Office can be reached at DSN 6265595 or 081-568-5595. We appreciate your cooperation and patience.

To commemorate Naples’ beloved patron saint, a morning Mass is scheduled at Naples Cathedral as well as at the saint’s cozy namesake church in Pozzuoli on Thursday, Sept. 19. Town residents of the town believe the hill topped by a cross below San Gennaro Church was the site where Romans decapitated the good bishop of Benevento. Others speculate the martyrdom took place right where the church now stands. Tradition holds the bloodstained stone in one of the church’s chapels is either where the saint’s head rested on his martyrdom or where the stone had touched the saint’s blood. Regardless of thought differences, the stone, said to have a special glow on the saint’s special day continues to draw the faithful to the church. Customarily, brightly colored light arches adorn the Pozzuoli church a few days leading up to the celebrations. Festivities usually feature a musical show, fireworks display plus a procession of the saint’s bust with Franciscan priests and a band. For queries, call the church at 081-526-1114.

NAVY DENTAL

Continued from Page 1

In 1922, the U.S. Naval dental school was created as part of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. What began as an offshoot of the medical school, evolved into a state-of-the-art, fully accredited, post-graduate dental school. It’s recognized as one of the best worldwide. Over the years, research at this institution has revolutionized the field of dentistry. Pioneer models of the dental airturbine handpiece, ultrasonic-vibrating instruments, and dental chairs were developed. These historical artifacts are currently on display at the Smithsonian Institute. During World War II, 7,000 dental officers and 11,000 dental technicians served in nearly every active engagement during the war. For their efforts, numerous dental officers received awards – to include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Navy and Marine Corps Medal, and the Bronze Star. The year 1944 was one for milestones in the Dental Corps. In June, Lt. Sara Krout became the first female Navy dentist. And in September, Lt. Thomas Watkins became the first African-American dentist commissioned in the Navy Dental Corps. The Dental Corps maintains high operational readiness in Operation Enduring Freedom and beyond. Dentists deploy routinely with Marine Expeditionary Units, and also in theater in support of Navy and Marine Corps forces. Dental personnel continue to play a significant role in peace-keeping and nation-building through humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions throughout the world. Happy Birthday, Navy Dental Corps!

FFSC’s Summer Family programs in Gaeta From FFSC Gaeta

The Gaeta work center of Fleet and Family Support Center deployed a series of intercultural relations programs during the summer. Gaeta FFSC tailored some educational and adventurous field trips intended for the whole family while school was out. “Be a Gladiator for a Day!” was the first day of this series; and took the participants to the Roman archeological site of Minturnae to learn who the Gladiators were and what they did. Enthusiastic participants got a chance to dress up as Gladiators and learn to fight as the Gladiators did. Under the supervision of scholars and archeologists belonging to the Lestrigonia Cultural Association, every one was able to feel the thrill of the arena. The kids participating and their parents also got to go through the Roman site and learn the lifestyle in Roman times before experiencing the arena and impersonating Spartacus. Gelato and “The Knights” was the second day of the adventures that took place. It combined a visit to a gelato factory followed by an exclusive history class at the Olde Mill Inn Park with costumed knights from the middle ages. At the gelato factory, families learned step-by-step how to make the Italian version of ice-cream. Every one was able to taste the fruit-based gelato of figs and yellow melon made that morning. After the gelato, the group was hosted at the Gaeta MWR owned park Olde Mill Inn with the “Knights.” These historical impersonators demonstrated how the lords and dukes used to battle. These professional impersonators parade and compete around Italy, but also bring back historical fencing and stage reenactments of historical value. The organization Le Lame del Golfo had the group take part in duels and learn combat techniques with different swords and blades used in the middle ages. The outdoor field trips and workshops gave the opportunity for the whole family to participate in interactive activities, which provide an easy learning of the surrounding local culture. Participants from the Naples community along with the Gaeta community said they enjoyed the opportunity to embrace the culture.

won the Trivia Contest and Spencer Hsu won the Best Fan Spirit Contest. Towards the end of the game, Club Napoli Casal di Principe and Napoli Nation got the entire Bowling Alley going with the traditional San Paolo Stadium chant… “Chi Non Salta, Juventino, Eh, Eh.” At the end of the game, the Casal di Principe president, Saverio Ferraiuolo, and Napoli Nation president, Daniel Bowen, conducted a time honored soccer fan club tradition of the “Scarf Exchange.” “It was great spending time together with our local Italian community, and what better way to do it, than to cheer for Napoli,” said Jonas Joe, Napoli Nation member.

department of the Navy prepares to Face New Challenges By Defense Media Activity - Navy

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus directed the office of the Deputy Under Secretary of the Navy/Deputy Chief Management Officer (DUSN/DCMO) to begin a comprehensive assessment of the business challenges facing the Navy and Marine Corps. He also instructed the offices of the DUSN/DCMO to begin developing a plan to address the multiple budgetary and resource challenges currently facing the Department of the Navy. "This is about bringing real change to our department," said Mabus. "This will ensure that the Navy and Marine Corps team remains the most effective and efficient expeditionary fighting force the world has ever known." "We've faced these challenges in the past," said newly-appointed DUSN/DCMO Tom Hicks, former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy. "But, to me, what's different now is that the scale is different and the stakes are higher." As the Navy and Marine Corps continue to adapt to an evolving fiscal and global environment after more than a decade of sustained conflict, they face a series of new challenges. "We don't have a choice," said Hicks. "We have to be out in front on this. The fiscal resources are very constrained and that's not something that's going to end anytime soon. It is, however, something that comes with the opportunity to really think, strategically, about how we conduct the business of the Department of the Navy in a way that maintains and protects the mission." "What's paramount," Hicks said, "is being able to accomplish the mission and being able to do so in

a way that responds to the realities of the resources we have." Hicks, and those working in the office of the DUSN/DCMO, were selected to address possible areas of improvement in the business practices of the Department of the Navy due to a proven ability to drive change and the office's position within the department's organization. "His leadership as Deputy

Assistant Secretary for Energy and his entire career have proven Mr. Hicks's innovative vision and capacity to drive organizational change, exactly the credentials and mission for the DUSN/DCMO," said Mabus. Hicks looks forward to the task ahead. "We need to look at this as an opportunity to become the most efficient organization we can be in order to accomplish the mission when we're called upon," said Hicks. "Fiscal challenges put a strain on, for example, how, where and when we train. That's something we have to make sure doesn't happen again and, through this effort, I think we can ensure that it doesn't," Hicks said. "What this means for Sailors and Marines is that they will be able to do more of what we've actually asked them to do." Mabus directed the DUSN/DCMO to focus on the Secretary of the Navy priorities of people, platforms, power and partnerships in accomplishing several specific tasks including: - Developing and implementing a vision for large-scale Department of the Navy transformation to include clear goals and performance assessments. - Resolving the Department of the Navy's most pressing and complex business challenges. - Identifying opportunities to shape and position the

Department of the Navy to meet future budget and resource challenges. An initial business transformation plan, an assessment of the Department's biggest challenges, and a plan of action and milestones to include a plan for reshaping the Department of the Navy as part of a 20-percent headquarters manpower reduction are due to the Secretary of the Navy within 90 days. While Hicks will head this drive

to improve the Department of the Navy's business practices, the initiative will require the efforts of the entire organization. "My goal is to do this in a way that it is a collaborative effort across the Department of the Navy to identify opportunities for efficiencies, financial savings and staff savings," said Hicks. "This is a proactive chance for us to be able to position ourselves to be able to conduct the Department's missions in the future."

Energy Conservation Be water-wise outside From the Environmental Protection Agency Depending on climate, up to 75 percent of a home’s total water use during the growing season is for outdoor purposes. Try these tips to save water: • Detect and repair all leaks in irrigation system. • Use properly treated wastewater for irrigation where available. • Water the lawn or garden during the coolest part of the day (early morning is best). Do not water on windy days. • Water trees and shrubs, which have deep root systems, longer and less frequently than shallow-rooted plants that require smaller amounts of water more often. Check with the local extension service for advice on watering needs in your area. • Set sprinklers to water the lawn or garden only — not the street or sidewalk. • Use soaker hoses or trickle irrigation systems for trees and shrubs. • Install moisture sensors on sprinkler systems. • Use mulch around shrubs and garden plants to reduce evaporation from the soil surface and cut down on weed growth. • Remove thatch and aerate turf to encourage movement of water to the root zone. • Raise your lawn mower cutting height – longer grass blades help shade each other, reduce evaporation, and inhibit weed growth. • Minimize or eliminate fertilizing, which promotes new growth needing additional watering. • Remove areas of thirsty lawn in favor of native drought-resistant plants. • When outdoor use of city or well water is restricted during a drought, use the water from the air conditioning condenser, dehumidifier, bath, or sink on plants or the garden. Don’t use water that contains bleach, automatic-dishwashing detergent or fabric softener. • Sweep driveways, sidewalks and steps rather than hosing them off. • Wash the car with water from a bucket, or use a commercial car wash that recycles water. • When using a hose, control the flow with an automatic shut-off nozzle. Visit www.epa.gov/watersense for more information about saving water.

JFC Naples Field Gunners receive award from the JFC Naples Commander From JFC Naples Public Affairs Admiral Bruce W. Clingan, commander of Allied Joint Force Command Naples, presented the JFC Naples 2013 Field Gun Team with certificates of commendation after returning from the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity competition in England. Since 2006, JFC Naples has entered a multinational team in field gun competition. This year the team of 35 was made up of military personnel from 12 different armed forces from Italy, Spain, France, Great Britain, Greece, the Netherlands and the United States. “It is a real privilege for me to have a chance to address all of you and to recognise our Field Gun Team,” said Clingan. “It has become one of the high points of my recognition opportunities each and every year.” The training is intensive and requires the upmost commitment, great personal courage and exemplary teamwork. The competition

involves assembling, hauling and firing a 19th century field artillery piece along an 85yard track and commemorates the Naval Brigade’s part in the breaking of the siege of Ladysmith in 1899 during the Boer War in South Africa. “Beyond determination and conditioning there is teamwork,” said Clingan. “It’s the epitome of teamwork in many respects, because it’s not just the physical effort. It’s a thinking game as well, so I commend you. It’s also important that you are not only an inspiration to us, but you are our ambassadors.” The JFC Naples Field Gun Team demonstrated their skills at the amphitheatre in Pozzuoli, the U.S. Navy’s Support Site, Hotel Agora and at the JFC Naples Headquarters. The demonstrations let people know that NATO is about human beings bound together for a common cause. JFC Naples Field Gun Team was the runner-up in the “Endeavour Cup” and 17th overall in the competition.

SCANNO

Continued from Page 1

After recuperating from the hike, I walked into town for the evening fun. I was told by my hotel hosts that Scanno has mostly hikers in June and July, but that in August and September the summertime vacationers arrive from around Italy to enjoy the events that occur each weekend. In October and November the town is tranquillo, and so the hotel closes then. August and September are great times to visit though. I found that in the late afternoon and early evening people stroll the paths between the old (and livedin) medieval stone houses, visit the shops, sit on benches in the piazza or at a cafe, and talk. Moms roll their bambini in strollers, and children play soccer. At 9 Plenty of outdoor shopping opportunities can be found p.m. the music starts and in Scanno, italy.(Photos by Michael Maddox) bands continue playing till after midnight. That’s when I took my mature (over 50) self to bed; however, the piazza remained full of couples, older folks, families, and children who were enjoying the music. Fresh air and exercise in the Apennines Mountains and a festa-filled medieval town. What a great couple of days and what great exploration. Scanno is fun, near, and easy.

Agencies Commit to Transition Assistance Program From American Forces Press Service

The Departments of Defense, Veterans Affairs, Labor, Education, the Office of Personnel Management and the Small Business Administration codified their continued commitment to help transitioning service members be "career ready" for civilian life by signing a statement of intent Aug. 15. "This [statement of intent] puts our shared commitment to our service members in black and white," said Dr. Susan Kelly, principal director of DoD's Transition to Veterans Program office. Each of the military services was represented during the formal signing of the statement of intent, said Francine Blackmon, deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force for force management integration. The services have aggressively implemented the various components of the redesigned Transition Assistance Program, Blackmon said. Working elbow-to-elbow with the various partnering agencies, the services are ensuring service members are provided all the necessary tools to make a successful transition to civilian life, she said. "The [statement of intent] strengthens our resolve for a concerted interagency effort working toward this common goal," Blackmon added. More than 250,000 service members separate from active duty each year, and they face numerous challenges as they transition to

civilian life. The statement of intent is a milestone for the interagency effort to redesign the 1990s-era transition assistance program model and help service members meet those challenges. The signing shows that the redesigned TAP is not a shortterm effort but a set of greatly improved transition services that the partners will sustain for the long-term. "Even in this time of budget constraints, each of the interagency partners and the services will sustain the effort to implement the redesign of transition assistance," Kelly said. This includes staff at installations to provide face-toface information and new skills, as well as a virtual curriculum to build the same career readiness skills for service members and Reservists in isolated and geographically separated locations, she added. The statement of intent also establishes the objectives for the new governance structure and the foundation of the new TAP Executive Council, comprised of DoD, VA and DoL co-chairs, as well as senior executives from SBA, OPM, ED and the military services. The new TAP Executive Council will steer the collaboration and partnership efforts through 2016 and implement and modify the redesigned program as needed to meet changing needs of transitioning service members through the years. Over the last 18 months, the DoD and VA have led the efforts of

(Official U.S. Navy file photo)

the Veterans Employment Initiative Task Force interagency partners and the White House Economic and Domestic Policy Council staffs in redesigning the Desert Storm-era Transition Assistance Program to better prepare service members for these challenges as they leave the military and become veterans. The redesigned TAP provides

training that will build skills to enable transitioning service members to meet career readiness standards established by DoD. The training, known as Transition GPS (goals, plans, success), is comprised of interlinked curriculum, services, and processes conducted by numerous partners - DoD, the military services, VA, DoL, SBA, and OPM. Interagency partner Department

of Education and the National Guard Bureau continue to serve in valued consultative and advisory roles. Advancing their work together, the agencies will cultivate an interagency partnership that builds upon mutual respect, cooperation and shared goals to successfully transition career ready service members to the civilian sector.

In the Spotlight MARK J. LUDINGTON A famous quote states that volunteering is not about the time, but about the heart. Mark J. Ludington has demonstrated in the past 90 days to have a big heart. As a former Senior Airmen in the Air Force, he is very aware of the sacrifices that service members undergo daily. As a civilian and a USO volunteer, his main mission is to reach out to them, making military families feel closer to home. Ludington was recognized as the USO Naples Volunteer of the Quarter for Summer 2013. In only three months, he made a tangible impact in the community, volunteering for more than 20 events including Hot doggin Tuesday, Hospital Outreach, area orientation, Barkin’ BBQ, Sailor of the Quarter and Fleet Outreach. “The troops are what this is all about. We are here for them and we need to take good care of our Sailors.” This is Mark’s motto. In just a short period of time, they have inspired others to give extra goodness to the troops our USO Naples team so proudly serves.

HM3(FMF) DAVID MORALESALARCON Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class David Morales-Alarcon arrived in Naples last year and has been making an outstanding contribution to the Facilities Management Department of U.S. Naval Hospital Naples ever since. He devotes countless off-duty hours to ensure his department’s mission to keep the hospital a safe working environment, in pristine and professional appearance, is always met. “Working in the Facilities Department as a Corpsman is not the easiest job to take, but like many Sailors that work and excel outside their rate I am glad to help and be part of our team.” Morales-Alarcon grew up in Las Vegas. He enlisted in the Navy in April 2008 and his first duty station was in beautiful Southern California at Camp Pendleton. While stationed here in Naples, Italy, his goals outside of work include earning an associate’s degree and traveling to 37 other countries with his wife, Elizabeth, and daughter, Alma.

LCDR STEPHEN MARTY Lt. Cmdr. hails from Kings Park, New York. He received his commission in 1996 from the United States Naval Academy. Following graduation, he reported to Pensacola to begin his career as a naval flight officer flying in the S3B Viking. After more than eight years of flying, the S-3B Viking was retired and Marty accepted a lateral transfer to the Navy's Medical Service Corps. In July 2011, he reported to U.S. Naval Hospital Naples, Italy and was recently recognized by the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery as the 2012 Military Comptroller of the Year. Marty and his wife, Susi, are very active and especially enjoy running, biking, traveling, and sampling the local Italian cuisine. They also enjoy spending time with their pets and are active volunteers with Animals Without Limits. In August they welcomed their first child, Rosemarie Virginia.

FT2(SS) JAMES COX Fire Control Technician 2nd Class James Cox is from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. With the help of two other Sailors, he extinguished a fire in a neighbor’s apartment that took place June 25 in Bagnoli. As Mission Distribution System Operator with U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/ U.S. 6th Fleet, he coordinates with firing units, conducting strike operations within the European and African command’s area of responsibility. He is also an assistant urinalysis coordinator, ensuring the command is in compliance with the Navy’s drug policy. “We are an integral part of what goes on over here, especially when working in conjunction with 7th Fleet. We are definitely a necessity in this theater, and without the other Sailors I work with I would not be able to what I do.”

CTR2 (IDW/SW/AW) JUSTIN JOHNSON Cryptologic Technician (Collection) 2nd Class Justin Johnson is from Overland Park, Kansas. As acting N22 Department assistant leading petty officer for U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/ U.S. 6th Fleet, he was responsible for 10 junior sailors. Johnson also produced and supervised all source analysis spanning two areas of responsibility and supporting nine task force commanders. As an information dominance warfare coordinator, he has helped Sailors throughout the command get their pin. “It’s been great to be part of the foundation for the information dominance warfare community, which is still a new program. It’s been rewarding to teach rates that don’t normally get to work in the intelligence community about our contribution.”

Should we do our best to shelter our kids from economic woes? Despite experiencing major financial problems, many parents continue to scrape together enough cash to finance their children's extracurricular activities, sports, and hobbies. In fact, one parent commented that he wasn't quite sure how he'd afford having his car repaired due to his son's need for new hockey equipment. At first glance, this behavior seems heroic. Taking a closer look, sacrificing our own wants and needs to maintain a high standard of living for our children may not be such a good idea. Let's consider some messages this sends to kids:

• You are more important than other people. • Your wants and needs should come before others'. • When money is tight, there's no need to adjust one's expectations or lifestyle. • The real world works the same for everybody except for you. Please don't misunderstand! It is important for kids to enjoy healthy extracurricular activities and hobbies. In fact, research tells us that these activities help kids do better in school and stay off drugs. Here's the problem: When our children's standard of living grossly exceeds our own, we run the risk of them becoming extremely spoiled. Sometimes the most loving thing we can do is tell the truth in a matter of fact way: "I want you to participate in that activity, but we just don't have the money." It's truly amazing how well kids handle the truth when we aren't afraid to tell it!

This is the time. I'm climbing my way to the 40s, have a couple kids past age 10 or close, and at least half of my profession relies heavily on IT. A year ago, the Huffington Post published, "The Type of Man Most Likely to Cheat.” Two surveys from a website that caters to married men and women looking to have an affair studied the type of men and women who are most likely to cheat. Yeah, I'm purposely omitting the name of "that site.” The results for men revealed they were likely to be in their 40s with more than 10 years of marriage and two kids from early on in the marriage. The largest percentage of potential cheaters had a career in the IT field. Unfortunately, I’ve had the opportunity to see up close the effects of having a cheating husband, or in my case a cheating dad around. Messy relationships, a good dose of screaming, pegging one parent against the other, everybody walking on eggshells, and the end result ultimately ends in fragmentation. Yet it looks so easy, conquering, defiant and life-giving! This is when the words of the apostle Paul come to mind when he wrote in 1 Corinthians 6:12 “Even though ‘I am allowed to do anything,’ I must not become a slave to anything.” We become slaves to our decisions, whether we like it or not. What if instead of deciding to venture from a com-

mitted relationship, we instead venture off to cheat with our own spouse? What if we decide to fall in love with our spouse again and again and again? I am confident we perform better at our workplace, in our relationships with others, and even our own self-confidence grows when we keep investing in our committed relationships. Mignon McLaughlin wrote, “A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.” Let us break the odds and instead of belonging to a statistic, let us belong to each other. If you’re a married man and would like to get together with other committed men, feel free to email me and I’d love to meet with you and maybe we can grab coffee sometime. I too am strapped for time, but lets face it, at the end of the day we all make time for the things we really want to make time for. Also, keep in mind we have an outstanding line of Chaplains ready and willing to meet. Let us not belong to a statistic. Let us belong to each other, intentionally.

Obtaining your Sojourner Permit Italian law requires all foreign personnel working or living within Italy, other than an active-duty member under military orders, to obtain a Sojourner Permit within eight days of arrival in Italy. This is different from a visa, which is merely an approval for entry into the country. All applicants over 14 years of age must apply in person, as each person's signature is required at the time of application. NATIONALS OF ANY STATE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY COMING TO ITALY DO NOT REQUIRE ANY VISA OR SOJOURNER PERMIT. As part of the Area Orientation process, the U.S. Region Legal Service Office (RLSO EURAFSWA) assists in the preparation and oversees the acquisition of the Sojourner Permit for all personnel attached to U.S. Navy commands in the Naples area. Army and Air Force personnel stationed at JFC must apply through the Carabiniere at the JFC Provost Marshall's Office, Building L. Contact Connie Henderson, RLSO EURAFSWA liaison advisor, at 081-568-4639 for more information.
