White-Water Rafting with Boy Scout Troop 007 By Lt. Col. Abel Carreiro, Troop 007 Scoutmaster

Troop 007 took 10 Boy Scouts white-water rafting at Rafting Adventure Lao in Papasidero, Italy, April 27. The Scouts took beginner and intermediate water rapids courses and spent the day on the Lao River. The lead Scoutmaster for the weekend was Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) (AW/SW) Erik Avery from Naval Support Activity Naples’ Operations Department. "One of the most rewarding things in volunteering with this program is seeing the development of these young men into America's future leaders,” said Avery. “The Naples Troop 007 has a fantastic outdoor

program which allows the Scouts to participate in numerous activities in areas that most Scouts in the U.S. will never have the opportunities to see.” The group camped on the banks of the Lao River before and after the day of rafting. When they were not on the water, they learned outdoor cooking skills and nature conservation. “The Scouts had a great time on the Whitewater Rafting trip, both through the teamwork aspect of the rafting as well as learning the essential skills of water sports safety," said Avery. The next few months hold more exciting opportunities for Boy Scouts in the Naples

community. The Troop’s summer camping schedule starts in May with a visit to Pisa, camping on the side of Mt. Vesuvius, and a week-long summer camp in Switzerland. There is a full summer planned for the Scouts, who will have camping opportunities in different locations each month through the end of the year. The Boy Scouts of America aims to provide an educational program for boys and young adults to build character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and to develop personal fitness. Troop 007 meets on Monday nights at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Center at the Support Site.

Learning from a Photo Pro By MC1 Christopher Stoltz

I first met Ron Haviv 10 years ago aboard USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75). It was after the Towers fell and the war was starting to ramp up in Iraq. A news agency had sent him to document the carrier operations for the kick-off of the war. VII (pronounced “seven”) Photo Agency, which Haviv helped found, has been the premier photography agency since 2001. So when a friend posted on my Facebook page that VII would be kicking off the Fotografia Europea 2013 event in

Reggio Emilia, Italy, I jumped at the chance to see him again. Fotografia Europea is a photographer’s dream festival – it is comprised of workshops, guest speakers and exhibits scattered throughout the city, all celebrating photography. It seemed like everyone in Reggio Emilia was carrying a camera, and a few of the camera stores had serious gear for sale, such as my beloved German Leica in the window. I spent my Friday afternoon checking out exhibits, some of which were still being setup. see PHOTO WORKSHOP Page 10

The commander of Destroyer Squadron 60 (DESRON 60), Capt. John Esposito, completed a tour of ships under his command in the Mediterranean Sea, April 29-May 1. During the three-day trip, the commodore visited the guidedmissile destroyers USS Gravely (DDG 107), USS Mahan (DDG 72) and USS Barry (DDG 52); and the guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey (CG 61), where he met with Sailors and was able to observe the crews in their at-sea routine. "It is important for commanders to visit our ships and actually surround ourselves with the Sailors who work on the deckplate level,” said Esposito. “They are the ones who actually get the job done." During his visits, Esposito observed flight operations, navigation operations and toured divisional spaces. "The commodore's mid-deployment visit serves as a positive reminder to the crew of the impact of our hard work,” said Lt. j.g. Carissa Hawley, Mahan’s navigator. “It's always a great opportunity to ask questions and get immediate feedback from the top." While aboard each ship, Esposito met with the commanding officers, talked about upcoming commitments and observed tactical-level operations.Esposito said he was pleased with the status of the ships and thanked the crews for a job well done. “Every Sailor out here contributes to the team effort, which allows our ships to do all the great things they do," said Esposito. “I truly believe they are some of the best Sailors in the fleet.” “I especially enjoyed the chance to meet some of the crew on each ship,” said Esposito. "These Sailors are doing a great job and these ships are accomplishing an important mission.” Barry, Mahan, Gravely and Monterey, all homeported in Norfolk, Va., are on scheduled deployments supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility.

Captain’s Corner Every day, there are individuals in our community who mold young minds. They dedicate each day to making a difference in the lives of our children. As Teacher Appreciation Week draws to a close, I want to express sincere gratitude to all of our teachers – both in the classroom and at home. Our teachers foster a positive learning environment while helping students cope with the unique challenges of life overseas, frequent moves, and parents’ long absences. In my view, good teachers are essential. Teaching kids how to think independently and problem solve in this Digital Age is evermore critical. I salute all of those preparing our future leaders and entrepreneurs for what lies ahead. With summer break around the corner, now is a perfect opportunity for parents to consider how students will retain the knowledge they have learned in the classroom. Studies show that a summer reading regimen is critical to a student’s continued development. Reading helps children become better writers and spellers. Also, studies show that kids are more likely to make reading a habit when they read about topics that naturally interest them. This year’s summer reading program for kids at the Support Site library is a perfect opportunity to continue your child’s education. Consider signing your child up for the program when it starts June 24. Children who participate will be able to earn a cool prize for every book log completed and take part in fun activities. In September, MWR will award our most exceptional summer readers. I look forward to congratulating all of our exceptional readers. Let me remind everyone that MWR is currently conducting lifeguard classes. These classes are specifically tailored to our high school students who are at least age 16. We are giving our teens a chance to set themselves up for a summer job. Service members are also eligible to serve as lifeguards when they have permission from their command. MWR is willing to accommodate a Sailor’s available hours because we simply need more qualified community members. The more lifeguards we have, the more flexibility MWR will have to operate pools at Carney Park and Support Site. We want to open these pools on days and times that most benefit the community, but we need everyone’s support. If you are eligible to become a lifeguard, please consider signing up. Help us maintain a vibrant recreational swim program for the summer. Before closing, I want to acknowledge another source of incredible support – our mothers. This Sunday allows us to pause and celebrate the loving qualities of mothers everywhere. Moms are just like the mama bears in the wild: tender towards their cubs but fierce protectors against any potential threat. When it’s mom against the world, she’ll definitely win if she’s defending her little one. Abraham Lincoln is famously quoted as saying, “All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” I suspect that everyone who has experienced their mother’s uncompromising love can appreciate Lincoln’s sentiment. So to all the moms out there, thank you for being who you are. You truly mean everything. Happy Mother’s Day!

Riding a Rocket The Ducati Factory in Bologna is home to the Ducati Museum, Ducati manufacturing and the racing legacy that makes the Italian bikes some of the most popular motorcycles in the world. By Laura Byrd

I can feel the sweat beading up from every pore and the color rising in my face. Trying to maintain an expression of calm, I’m listening to David James, a representative of Ducati Motors in Bologna, matter-of-factly explain the different riding modes of the 2013 Ducati Diavel Dark I’m sitting on in the factory parking lot. The digital read-out of the electronics is simple, but a bit intimidating. Having ridden Harley Davidsons for years, this shouldn’t be scary. But a 750-pound Softail Deluxe with a seat height of 24.5 inches is very different from a 463 pound sport bike with a 30-inch seat height and racing DNA. Before arriving at

the factory to visit the museum and go for a test ride, I had naively assumed there was a test track. For over ten years, the Ducati Riding Experience has taught all levels of riders. There is an intermediate class and a basic skills course, both of which are designed for riders with experience who want to improve their road skills and practice better safety. Generously offered a new Diavel while scheduling the appointment, I’d lugged a fullface helmet, riding boots and leather riding gear to Bologna on the train. It would be my first experience on a sport bike – and Ducati seemed like a great place to start. The Diavel is the Ducati version of a touring bike, described by the manufacturer as the model

most popular with Harley Davidson V-rod owners and converts from other touring bike manufacturers. I was ready for a personal first – and someone showing me the ropes before I ventured into the ring. But I hadn’t asked enough questions about the test ride. There is no testing facility. That meant the ride today was through the gates of the Ducati facility out into Bologna, Italy, alone. It was fly or fall. Being offered a courtesy bike was a far cry from actually signing up for the Ducati Riding Experience, which takes place on race tracks throughout Italy, including Misano World Circuit and several others. Fortunately, it didn’t take long to adapt. Heading away

from the factory location’s busy boulevard, eventually a long, curvy, two-lane road made it easy to relax and feel the bike. Riding in Urban mode, it was easy to love the ride and tempting to shift to Sport Mode on these roads once the smooth six-speed felt comfortable and the quick acceleration became easy to control. Rolling along analyzing my posture and the seating position – which I didn’t anticipate would be comfortable – it was surprising how ergonomically natural it felt. This slightly forward position is what I expected to hate – but it was easy to adopt. An hour went by, and lost in the bike’s feel and the road ahead, I was surprised to look down and see the digital speedometer read 80 MPH. I hadn’t even shifted into sixth gear yet. Backing off the throttle, I slowed down and headed back to the factory. Now I knew the secret. A Ducati is fast, addictive, and well worth learning to ride safely on a track before venturing out into the unknown, a rookie. Sign me up.

Naples Area Nurses Celebrate Nurses Week Lt. Kelly Ricketts, Nurse Corps, U.S. Navy A day to honor nurses has been advocated for since 1953 to show appreciation for one of the most trusted professions. It was not until 1974 that the International Council of Nurses declared an International Nurse Day to be celebrated annually on May 12. This date was particularly special as it marked the birthday of Florence Nightingale, an English social reformer who is credited with founding the nursing profession. That same year President Nixon issued a proclamation declaring a National Nurse Week in the United States. During the 1970s and early 1980s, most of the U.S. began recognizing nurses on May 6 to perpetuate recognition for nurses annually. However, in 1982 the American Nurses Association and the U.S. Congress declared May 6 National Recognition Day for Nurses, a declaration that was later signed and proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan. The American Nurses Association extended the recognition for a full week in 1990 and by 1993 designated May 6-12 to be permanent dates for observing National Nurses Week.

Nurses have been caring for military members since Florence Nightingale tended to the injuries of soldiers during the Crimean War in 1854. This year’s celebration of Nurses Week coincides with the birth of the Navy Nurse Corps, which was established by Congress on May 13, 1908. Starting with only 20 nurses, the Navy Nurse Corps has grown and evolved but its mission has always been the same ... to care for the minds and bodies of Sailors and Marines on land and sea. Throughout history, you will find that Navy Nurses have cared for our shipmates during peace and in times of war. Navy Nurses have served all over the world and have treated American service members of all branches, allied forces, family members, civilians in harm’s way. All of this has been done in various combat environments, as well as, disaster sites, aboard ships, and at home. This year marks 105 years of serving the most deserving patients. The Naples Area Nurses’ Association honored our active duty Nurse Corps officers and their civilian colleagues with a week’s worth of special events. Be a part of the tradition and support your local nurses.

Military Spouse Appreciation Day By Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan W. Greenert

10 May is Military Spouse Appreciation Day, a day when we officially recognize the contributions of the husbands and wives who serve their country alongside us. Please take a moment to reflect on the love and care our spouses generously offer and reaffirm your gratitude for their tireless support. Our loved ones volunteer for the formidable task of waiting for us and managing the home while we answer the call of service to our nation. Their sacrifice and devotion to the Navy family are invaluable in keeping our families and Sailors “on course and on speed.” And so on Military Spouse Appreciation Day, please make it a priority to demonstrate your appreciation and show your spouses how much they are treasured. Never discount the personal sacrifices they make each day for our families and nation to ensure we remain the world’s greatest Navy. To all of you, Darleen and I thank you for your service.

Volunteers from the American Red Cross Naples chapter began accepting comfort-item donations from Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples community members, May 1, at the Capodichino Navy Exchange. The American Red Cross Naples chapter will be accepting the comfort item donations during the entire month of May for forwarddeployed service members in Africa. “We really wanted the community involvement, here at NSA Naples, to be an initiative that the Navy community could take pride in supporting all of the branches,” said Susan Westbrook, American Red Cross Naples station manager. “Most of the people here have forward-deployed before so they know what it’s like and they are better able to tell us what you would want to have while deployed. This has already been a really big success due to the community donating so much already in one day.” Comfort items can also be donated at the U.S. Naval Hospital Naples located at Support Site or at the American Red Cross Naples office at Capodichino from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. “I know the feeling of being out there forward deployed,” said Operations Specialist 2nd Class (SW/AW) Thomas Morales, attached to U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Arica/ U.S. 6th Fleet. “I’ve been deployed six times in eight years. I’m always trying to help out when I can by donating.” The American Red Cross was created in 1881 by Clara Barton and officially chartered by Congress in 1900 to provide national and international relief during disasters, to give relief to the military and serve as a means of communication between members. “I’m donating today because receiving a care package is always a big lift, a big morale boost,” said Operations Specialist 2nd Class (SW) Jamell Naylor, attached to U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/ U.S. 6th Fleet. “Whatever I can do to help

USO Naples hosted a “Taste of Home BBQ,” May 3, at Capodichino in order to give unaccompanied Sailors an opportunity to come together and have fun while enjoying free food and refreshments. “We try to have an event for our unaccompanied Sailors here in Naples at least once a month,” said Sabrina M. Pullido, USO Naples and Rome area director. “We do these events in an effort to bring a feeling of community and togetherness to the single Sailors here.” A group of USO volunteers put the event together with a little help from the local commissary. “While most of the food and supplies used for this event was funded by the USO and our volunteers, the commissary also donated some food platters for the barbecue,” said Pullido. Some of the food available at the barbecue included hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, soda,

vegetable platters, fruit, desserts and more. The event was held just outside the bachelor enlisted quarters on base. The location helped bring in a few Sailors who did not know the barbecue was taking place. “I was walking home from work and saw all the USO shirts by the grills, so I knew something good was going on,” said Yeoman 2nd Class Kenneth Atkins, assigned to U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/ U.S. 6th Fleet. “It was definitely a good start to my weekend.” During the event, Pullido presented the rest of the USO Naples crew with the ‘Top Overall USO Center’ and ‘Top Large USO Center in Europe’ awards. USO Naples was named the award winners on May 1, in an awards ceremony in Nashville, Tenn. “I’m not surprised they won those awards,” said Atkins. “They are always out here doing great things for our community.” For more information on what USO Naples is doing in the future checkout their Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/ usonaples.

MWR Kicks Off Intramural Softball Season By MC3 Caitlin Feddersen, Navy Public Affairs Support Element-East Detachment Europe

Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples’ MWR center kicked-off the intramural softball season with a round of preseason games, May 2. Six softball teams, representing several commands in the Naples area, played for the first time Thursday evening in preparation for the upcoming season. The preseason games allow for the teams to get acquainted with one another and for game officials who are recently trained to gain hands-on experience before the start of the season. “The team members play with their commands, so that helps bring them together even after work,” said Davina Williams, acting MWR intramural sports coordinator. “It also helps promote camaraderie within the commands, gives them something healthy to do after work and is another way to connect with their coworkers and their friends.” One of the teams playing was the Army, NATO and Navy team, which consists of multi-branch players. Coaching the team was Sgt. 1st Class James Jones, attached to Allied Forces South. “I saw a lot of really good things out of our team tonight,” said Jones.

“There were some really good plays and I think we’re going to have a good squad for the season.” The intramural softball is just one of my programs available to service members as their families through the MWR intramural

sports program. “The intramural sports program is the adult league that includes U.S. military personnel, spouses and their dependents that are over 18 years of age and out of high school,” said Williams.

“Throughout the year, we have various team sports people can join including softball, volleyball, football and basketball.” The softball season officially begins May 9, with games being held at Carney Park every

Tuesday and Thursday. The season is scheduled to come to a close in July when the intramural softball playoffs will start. For more information about the MWR Intramural Sports program call DSN: 629-6529.

It’s Prom Time Reenlistment Changes Ahead By Kristin Himmler, Adolescent Substance Abuse Counseling Service Clinical Supervisor/Counselor

Besides the dresses, shoes, dating and parties, students are about to engage in one of their most memorable experiences of high school. Do you remember your prom? Many things have changed since then, but a lot has stayed the same. One thing that has not changed is that most teenage alcohol-related incidents occur during prom. Prom is often a time for experimentation and high risk behaviors for students, for that reason it is also a time that parents need to be more involved than ever. What can you do to reduce the risk of alcohol or drug use, sexual assault, or other alcohol-related incidents during prom? There are several things you can do with your child before prom: talk to them about the possible risks, know their date and how to get in touch with their date’s family, know who they will be with afterward, have them contact you during the night, and have a plan in case they want to come home early or are in an unsafe situation. Having a prom plan can be the most effective way to increase safety. Prom plans begin a few weeks before the actual event and include you knowing the details of what your child plans on doing before and after prom. Prom plans take into account that most likely your child will be unsupervised and out with friends from dinner time until the next morning. Most importantly, prom plans include an agreement between parent and student that someone will be available to provide transportation regardless of place or time. If you would like further information or safety tips related to prom season, please contact the ASACS program at Naples Middle/High School (629-4181).

CNP Announces Major Changes to Help Sailors Navigate Their Careers

By MC2 David Cothran, Defense Media Activity-Navy For Sonar Technician 2nd Class Jason Simpson having back-to-back sea duty was not a tough choice. Under the Navy's Perform to Serve (PTS) program he was faced with either changing rates or volunteering for another tour at sea in order to reenlist. Now serving that second tour aboard USS Bunker Hill (CG 52), Simpson is looking forward to continuing his career in the rate of his choice with no regrets about heading back to sea. "I was offered as my conversion for PTS [the culinary specialist rating]," Simpson said. "I'm in the combat world. I opted to go back to sea as a sonar tech." Simpson's situation is not unique, and many Sailors throughout the fleet have had to make tough choices about their continued service in the Navy under PTS. Thanks to a new career management program announced May 1 by the chief of naval personnel, Sailors will have a greater opportunity to manage their own careers with a greater level of transparency in their options. Chief of Naval Personnel, Vice Adm. Scott R. Van Buskirk, announced upcoming changes to the way Sailors will apply for reenlistment and the launch of a new Career Navigator program during an allhands call at Naval Base San Diego. These are part of significant changes and enhancements to the way the Navy handles enlisted career management and are designed to provide Sailors with transparent, interactive and integrated tools to explore and choose career opportunities that span the

entire continuum of service including both active and reserve components, according to Navy personnel officials. The Navy has heard from the fleet that Sailors want earlier feedback in their requests for reenlistment quotas, more transparency and more interactive capability, resulting in a needed change. "These changes are absolutely a result of feedback from the fleet," Van Buskirk said. "What we are trying to do is meet their demands for a Sailor portal, putting transparency into the process, so our young men and women have the ability to have a view into how their career unfolds, what their opportunities are, what choices they have, and really bring that into a process an ability for them to be able to, each day that they want to, to have a view into their career." Under the current process, Sailors could have their career opportunities limited due to reenlistment approval being granted near the end of their orders-negotiation window. With the improved functionality and capabilities, Sailors will not only find out about their reenlistment status much sooner, but will also be able to play a much more active role in their future through the use of web-based applications. "What this does is really bring together the best of our previous programs and adds a lot of functionality that allows a Sailor now to look across their entire continuum of their service," Van Buskirk said. "We bring together a portal that allows the Sailors, without having to have a Navy career counselor there, to enable them to sit down, look at what's available to them, look at their opportunities, to let them chart their own way through their career path."

Career Navigator will pull all enlisted career management processes under one overarching program encompassing all career events such as reenlisting, changing ratings, choosing orders, and transitioning between Active Component and Reserve Component, or vice versa. In June, Sailors will begin to see changes occur as Career Navigator rolls out. There will be changes made to make the rating application process easier for PACT (Professional Apprentice Career Track) Sailors along with an easier transition process for Selective Reserve Sailors switching to active duty service. Additionally, there will be a change to the timeline that active duty Sailors need to request reenlistment approval. Sailors will be able to start the process 13 months prior to their end of active obligated service (EAOS) instead of the previous 12-month window. This means Sailors who have an EAOS in June or July 2014 will need to talk with their career counselors immediately to begin the process or requesting a reenlistment quota. This change gives Sailors an extra month to work the reenlistment and assignment process with their detailer. This initiative will eventually bring more transparency for Sailors in the process, including seeing quotas available for their rate, opportunities in other rates, and ultimately, Sailors will be able to see much of what detailers and career counselors see when making career decisions, according to personnel officials. For Sailors like Simpson, the announcement from the CNP was welcome news, and hearing from the CNP himself made it even more meaningful. "Coming directly from him, it kind of gives me a warm and fuzzy," Simpson said.

But as a tropical storm hits the island, knocking out the power supply, and an unscrupulous employee (Wayne Knight) sabotages the system so that he can smuggle dinosaur embryos out of the park, the dinosaurs start to rage out of control. PHOTO WORKSHOP

Continued from Page 1

Two of my favorite exhibits from the event were “Darkened Cities” by French photographer Thierry Cohen and the Weegee display. “Darkened Cities” is a series of famous skylines, blackened out and set against a starry sky. The second exhibit featured work from self-proclaimed greatest photographer Arthur Fellig, better known as “Weegee,” displaying some of his crime photography from the 1940’s. After checking out some of the exhibits, my workshop with Haviv started in the early morning hours of Saturday. He met me in the hotel lobby and I reminded him we had met before on his visit to the Truman. He recalled how massive the carrier is to the other shooter in my group. Last time I met Haviv, I had been extremely new to the world of professional photography. Even though I had seen his work, it didn’t click in my head that this was the same man who photographed the Mexican drug wars, Syrian and Cold War conflicts –who brought visuals to the violence. VII is one of the few photo agencies with a focus on bringing thoughtprovoking imagery to raise awareness of atrocities in the world. One photographer, Stephanie Sinclair, spoke about how her portraits of child brides in the Middle East has caused public outcry for help in the region. The agency brought its professionals to help mentor students, like me, in fine tuning the imagery we produce on a daily basis. Each VII photographer was paired with two students who applied to be tutored for a five-hour period and to submit images for the evening’s presentation. The assigned theme was “bicycles for transportation.” The city had just passed laws encouraging bicycles as the primary mode from place-toplace. We took photos of school children doing a sort-of carpool with bikes, where parents would help bike them to school with various meetup points in-between. Later, we shot on the street for a few hours building a portfolio of images to show at the final presentation that night. The workshop and the hours I spent talking to Ron about photography got me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to shoot more consistently by thinking through the final product. The two-hour presentation at Chiostri di San Pietro Saturday night was well received by the crowd as they cheered and applauded for the imagery they had come to see. It began with the panel of VII photographers reviewing their work and concluded with a display of the images students created. I was able to check out a few additional galleries on the way out of town. The festival runs throughout the summer and I highly encourage anyone mildly interested in photography to visit.

Energy Conservation Fun Facts: Nuclear Power in Italy From the NSA Naples Energy Management Team

Did you know that Italy once proposed the development of nuclear power plants back in the 1960s? Through the 1970s and early 1980s, Enel, with several partners from France and Germany, designed viable means to add Italy to the grid. Nuclear plants help a state or region more easily stay within its emission limitations and still meet its energy needs. Nuclear plants also reduce the cost of air pollution control for emitting facilities because they are non-emitting. This reduces the scarcity of allowable tons, lowers their price, and reduces the capital expenses needed to reduce emissions. Nuclear energy is an emission-free energy source because it does not burn anything to produce electricity. The plants produce no gases such as nitrogen oxide or sulfur dioxide that could threaten the atmosphere by causing ground-level ozone formation, smog, and acid rain. Nor does nuclear energy produce carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases suspected to cause global warming. However, shortly after the Chernobyl incident all nuclear development was put on hold. In 1987 the Italian government voted against further development and all nuclear power plans were then put on hold. The last of the plants were closed in the early 1990s. The nuclear topic didn’t come up again until 2008. Even though some officials called the original decision to stop nuclear process a terrible mistake, the 2011 nuclear incident in Japan caused the government to vote almost 10:1 against nuclear power.

The United Services Organization (USO) hosted a ceremony recognizing local Sailors of the Quarter at U.S. Naval Support Activity Naples, May 1. U.S. Naval Forces EuropeAfrica Fleet Master Chief JoAnn Ortloff presided over the event where 33 Sailors from eight area commands were recognized for their achievements. “It was great to see so many people come out in support of our Sailors of the Quarter,” said Ortloff. “It is always an honor to have the USO volunteers support our Sailors during events like this.”

The USO hosts luncheons each quarter to recognize outstanding Sailors and their leadership. Awardees also received gifts provided by the USO. Adm. Bruce W. Clingan, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, congratulated each Sailor for their achievements. “The Sailor of the Quarter award is a great accomplishment,” said Clingan. “It reflects the work ethic, personal achievements and contributions to their commands that every Sailor here today represents.” Intelligence Specialist 3rd Class Nikki Tilley was impressed that Clingan took time to personally congratulate the awardees. “It was an honor to receive

this award,” said Tilley, who was named Bluejacket of the Quarter for U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet. “It was definitely a welcome surprise that the admiral came out to congratulate us. I’m thankful for everyone in the command that has supported me in achieving my goals.” The commands represented included: Commander, Navy Region Europe; U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band; USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20); Naval Support Activity Naples Security; Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Naples; U.S. Naval Hospital Naples; Commander, Task Force 69 and Commander, U.S. Naval Forces EuropeAfrica/U.S. 6th Fleet.

Kids’ Talk: San Leucio Visit By Ferdinando Johnston

This last weekend I went to San Leucio. This palace is very special because King Ferdinand built it as a silk factory in 1789. Since the king did not like the court life, he moved from Caserta Palace to this hunting residence. He preferred to build his apartments next to the silk factory. He built a village called "La Real Colonia Dei Setaglioli." He also planned to build a city called Ferdinandopoli. This place is still famous for the Roman aqueduct that used to carry water to Caserta Palace. Silk products are still produced in San Leucio for famous clients such as the White House, Buckingham Palace, Palazzo Chigi, and Quirinale Palace. Me and my brother, Simone, were really impressed with the silk museum. The guide showed us how the machinery was used to weave the silk. My favorite part was the Queen's bathroom, which had a giant, heated marble bath that was as big as a pool. The frescoes in this bath were beautiful and made with color and wax, giving it a shiny effect.

Elementary School Sisters Compete on Horseback

Iris riding during the horseback-riding competition in Castellammare di stabia, Italy, april 28. (Photos by Ivy Alexander) By: Mike Alexander

The car bubbled with nervous energy and excitement from the two girls who were on their way to Castellammare di Stabia, Italy for a horseback-riding competition. Naples Elementary School 3rd grader Iris Alexander and 2nd grader Emily Alexander weren’t able to get their last tune-up ride in because of rain. The sisters had spent the previous day grooming the two horses they would be riding, Stella and Bandito. Iris and Emily are members of a western horseback riding team representing Mary’s Ranch in Varcaturo. The team competes in reigning competitions sanctioned by the Federazione Italiana Turismo Equestre (TREC), where riders are judged on their horsemanship. Riders wind their way through, over and around 8 to 12 pattern movements while a stop watch tracks their time. It’s an intricate balance, coaxing a one-ton animal into doing what the riders desire while focusing on the course and ever mindful of their time. Children from 4 to 17 years old compete in various categories. Emily competed in the walk, trot category while Iris competed in a more difficult novice junior category. Children from various ranch teams throughout Campania participated in the competition, which lasted from 9 a.m. until the awards presentation 12 hours later. It was a fantastic way to meet and form friendships with Italian families; sharing lunch, bilingual commentary (oohs and ahhs) for the performances and a general love for horses. The event began with a parade of the riders in front of a cheering crowd. This was followed by each nation’s national anthem. The Italian national anthem was played first with more than half the children singing along. Then it was Iris and Emily, standing before the large crowd and proudly waving their flag, as the only two American riders. Emily’s group was out first. After she and her family prayed for a safe ride, she grabbed a

emily riding during the april 28 competition sanctioned by the Federazione Italiana turismo equestre (tReC).

clutch of mane and leaned over, whispering into Bandito’s perked ears, “let’s get ‘em big fella.” Bandito is a big brown stallion, one absolutely game for competition but he was easily controlled as Emily executed a rundown before gracefully easing him through an 8-movement pattern before speeding to the finish. Her ride was perfect and extremely fast. The course was reformatted for a 9 movement pattern and Iris took mount for her category. She too would ride Bandito (instead of her beloved Stella) and she too said a prayer along with her family for a safe ride. She looked into Bandito’s big eye and he gave her a knowing wink. Iris then faced the judge, tipped her helmet and was signaled to proceed. Iris was tearing through the pattern in total control of her mount with very good time and in perfect form. Going into the last pattern movement, she rounded the first barrel tight and put her heels into Bandito’s ribs and he veered, turning away from the remaining two barrels and heading to the oppo-

site side of the arena. Never one to quit, Iris regained control of the big brown, suddenly unruly stallion, and rounded the remaining two barrels with perfect turns before storming in a dash for the finish. Despite Bandito veering from the course, and because of Iris’ total horsemanship, cool resolve and intense competitive drive, she rode to 6th place. Emily was announced as the winner for her category and received a big beautiful trophy. Iris said her favorite part of the competition was getting to see all the other horses, while Emily’s favorite part was actually riding Bandito in the competition. Both girls loved being around other little girls who share their love for horses and Iris made a couple new Italian friends. The sisters will partake in additional Italian competitions and said they would rather spend their summer vacation getting sweaty, dirty and coming home smelling of horses than sandy, salty and smelling from trips to the beach.
