Senior leaders, supervisors, program managers and junior Sailors from Naples-area commands attended four training sessions at Capodichino, each tailored to its specific audience. The training team included four personnel from USFF’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) office, chaplain staff and Navy Cyber Forces. They also brought along former Detroit Lions quarterback Eric Hipple and comedian Bernie McGrenahan who performed a comedy routine for all hands. “I wasn’t sure what to expect with a comedian coming in to talk to us about alcohol abuse and sexual assault,” said Utilitiesman 2nd Class Joshua

Captain’s Corner By Capt. Scott Gray NSA Commanding Officer

Memorial Day weekend has arrived – a time we set aside to remember those who’ve died in our nation's service. One of the opportunities that duty in Europe provides is the chance to join our longstanding allies and partners in honoring past heroes who have given so much. A few of our military members will attend the annual Memorial Day ceremony in Nettuno this weekend with their Italian counterparts at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial. U.S. and Italian service members will pay tribute to the fallen warriors who made the ultimate sacrifice during the liberation of Sicily in 1943. Other Naples-area personnel will travel to the Rhone American Cemetery in Draguignan, France, the final resting place for 860 U.S. service members who died in southern France during World War II. This is a special weekend for all of us who serve. The tremendous devotion shown by those who lost their lives while advancing the cause of freedom is a solemn reminder of our obligation to preserve and defend freedoms we all enjoy. The long weekend also marks the start of “100 Days of Summer,” a period when we typically experience an uptick in sports-related injuries. Earlier this month, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel noted in a message to all DoD organizations that 81 percent of the military’s non-combat fatalities in 2012 took place between Memorial Day and Labor Day. That’s a sobering fact. The Navy alone lost 20 Sailors to summer-activity related accidents last year. Hopefully we won’t lose anyone this year. We all need to do our part by keeping safety in mind when making our summer plans. Test the depth of the water before you jump in while visiting the island of Ischia or one of the many other beautiful islands in the Mediterranean. When grilling burgers, steaks and franks, closely tend to the grill. The number of DUIs and alcohol-related incidents has the potential to creep upward as more people attend outdoor parties and barbecues. Please don’t drive if you drink. Let’s prevent this from becoming an issue in our community by planning ahead and helping each other make safe choices. For everyone staying in the Naples area this weekend, come by for the opening of the Support Site pool. If you can’t make it when it opens tomorrow, you will certainly want to head to the pool on Sunday afternoon. AFN will be broadcasting a live show, playing some great tunes and giving out free prizes. We fought hard to offer an aquatics program this summer that the community deserves. Help us make our case in future years by taking full advantage of this year’s pool hours. Come out and have a good time this weekend. Let me also remind the community that we are still looking for qualified lifeguards. Teenagers who are at least age 16 can become lifeguards. Service members are also eligible when they have permission from their command. Please contact Debbie Moors (DSN: 629-6600) at the Support Site gym if you are interested. She’s our aquatics director, and her staff needs more lifeguards to operate pools at both Carney Park and Support Site this summer. We want to open these pools in accordance with a schedule that most benefits the community, but we need your support. If you are eligible to become a lifeguard, please consider signing up. Help us maintain a vibrant recreational swim program. Safely enjoy your weekend and don’t forget to take some time out to honor those who sacrificed to preserve the liberties we hold so dear.

Labor Minister to Tackle Youth Unemployment Issue Labor Minister Enrico Giovannini said the Italian government will have measures by the end of June to tackle the country’s high youth unemployment among the 15 to 24 years olds by 8 percent. According to the national statistics institute ISTAT, the youth unemployment reached 38.4 percent in March, 3.2 percent higher than the same month in 2012. Italy has the highest level in Europe of young people who are neither in education nor employment, at 24 percent. Giovannini said the government will be meeting with business associations and trade unions, and it will invest between 10 and 12 million euros. One of the possibilities to ease the youth unemployment is a shift for older workers from fulltime to part-time employment leading up to retirement without penalizing the employees’ previously accumulated benefits. This can be done by adding State subsidies, and make room in the market for younger workers. He added that another possibility could make way for early retirement with proportional penalties, but some solutions will be costly while others not. According to ISTAT, there are millions of Italians who cannot afford to eat a protein-based meal, such as meat,

every two days, or they were unable to afford to heat their home adequately, which affected one in five people in 2012. The number of people living in families considered to be seriously deprived has doubled in the past years to 8.6 million, or about 14 percent of the population. The report said more than 50 percent were unable to take one week of holiday away from home last year, especially in the south of Italy.

Animals and Plants Risk Extinction in Italy The National Federation of Parks (Federparchi) and the environment ministry report that some 161 animal species and 194 plant specimens risk extinction in Italy. Various species of lake and river fish, reptiles, birds, mammals and sea fish, as well as flora are at risk. The president of Federparchi underlined the geographic, climatic and historical characteristics of Italy and stressed the obligation to monitor and safeguard the natural environment from the many threats against it.

Truck with 73 Kilograms of Drugs Seized Near Caserta A truck with Italian license plates en route from Holland to Naples was stopped by customs

police near the Caserta highway exit. The truck was carrying flowers, but also 73 kilograms of marijuana, hashish and cocaine hidden among them. Police seized the truck and took the driver into custody.

Beach Resort Manager Protests from Ledge at St. Peter’s Basilica On Monday, an Italian beach resort manager spent two days perched on a ledge of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City demanding the end to what he called Italy’s social “massacre” and “political horror show.” The man climbed the 138-meter-high dome last July and last October to protest against the government and EU austerity measures against seaside establishments, which could mean his resort bar ending up for auction. His waterfront resort was destroyed by fire some years ago. He came down Tuesday night.

Many Italians Head to Polls this Weekend Seven million Italians will help choose their mayors and city councils Sunday and Monday. Elections will be held in Rome, in 15 provincial capitals and in 548 other cities including many in the Campania region.

A Fast Trek through Tuscany Story and Photos by Laura Byrd

The prancing horse coming toward us in the opposite lane blew by in a rumble of exhaust and blur of crayon red Ferrari. Accelerating to catch back up with the yellow Fiat ahead, we swept around a long curve in the road and suddenly snow was on the horizon. We were headed up into the Southern Apennines mountain range, in a part of Italy we had dreamed of seeing someday. But seeing Tuscany this way wasn’t the original plan. Following one hundred classic cars through Tuscany on a

motorcycle had sounded like a leisurely trip - but the stunning landscape was going by very fast. The Terre di Canossa is an annual international classic car challenge that attracts vintage car owners from all over Europe. Italians teams and cars from Russia, Switzerland, Japan, Australia and the United Kingdom were competing with each other. Each driver was accompanied by a navigator tasked with interpreting the route instructions in a road book that covers 390 miles through the most scenic parts of central Italy. Named after

A 1968 Jaguar E-type driven by Russian team Sergey Shurshalin and Anastasia Kedrina, was one of eight classic Jaguars entered in the competition by the Russian Racing Group.

are individual time trials; competitions that start with driving over a timing device and attempting to drive the perfect speed over a designated part of the route in what the judges have pre-determined is the “ideal” of amount of time. At the end of the time trial is another timing device that “clocks you in” to check your time. The closer you were to driving the correct amount of time for that stretch of road, the more likely you were to win. We had anticipated cars as old as a 1933 Aston Martin or 1928 Bugatti would be slow, and we assumed a lot of teams would drive the time trials at a moderate pace. That assumption proved to be wrong. For the majority of three days, we worked to keep up, soaking up the beautiful back country as we rode through. The best opportunity to see an area was at the start, the lunch stops, and the finish. The starting line was in Salsomaggiore Terme, known for its thermal waters and spas. With children cheering and Italian media filming, the vehicles departed from Piazza Berzieri. From there the route became a long series of hairpin turns through a labyrinth of postcard pretty farm land, and into the Valle dell’Ozzola, a remote valley filled with switch backs that descended through blooming flowers. From there the route climbed toward the village of Ligonchio where we stopped for

lunch at Rifugio dell’Aquila, a small restaurant and hotel with the best wine and cheeses we’ve had in Italy. We were gaining altitude, and the landscape was changing quickly. Between the Secchia river and Monte Cusna mountain, after lunch we climbed to Passo di Pradarena, a mountain pass which at over 5,000 feet is the highest road in the Southern Apennines. Dating back to use by the Romans in 183 BC, the snow was plentiful here and several drivers in open cockpit cars stopped to don jackets and hats. Proceeding through the chilly Apuane Alps, we passed the isolated Isola Santa lake and cruised through the breathtaking Passo del Vestito, a mountain pass with steep views down over the guardrail that almost caused vertigo. Driving close to the rock mountain face, I was grateful we were in the right lane. The first day ended in the seaside resort of Forte dei Marmi, a popular tourist destination that attracts visitors from all of Europe. Historically the site of second homes for the rich and famous, it is also the primary residence of tenor Andrea Bocelli. Day two was a trek from the sea, over the mountains again, to the tiny cobblestone streets of Lucca’s medieval city. Here we were allowed to drive atop the wall surrounding the city for a short block, before leaving Lucca headed for Livorno and

the Italian Navy Academy of Livorno, where lunch was served. The next leg was traveling the stunning Livorno Circuit, a challenging road of steep hills, tight turns and jaw dropping views, where the Italian Gran Prix was driven in 1937. Climbing up we passed through the town of Montenero, site of several Italian films. Back in Forte dei Marmi for the night, the seaside resort Bambaissa, was our oasis on the beach. While feasting on fresh seafood at an elegant, outdoor table on a beautiful beach of candlelit sand, it was easy to see why this Tuscan town was so popular with Italians and tourists both. The last day was the third trip on a different route from the shores of the sea, up through the mountains. I had read that over 65 percent of the Tuscany region was hilly, and 25 percent was mountainous. But actually passing through the heart of the Apuane Alps and through the ancient Galleria del Cipollaio tunnel that connects the coastal Versilia to the meadows of Garfagnana, brought those words off the page into reality. Over the Apennines again and through Passo delle Radici, we arrived in Modena for the last stretch into Reggio Emilia. Watching the vintage cars arrive at the finish in Piazza Prampolini, we marveled at their endurance over the diverse terrain, and agreed that next time, we would take Tuscany slow.

Morris. (Photo by Cam Betz) By Cam Betz, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia Public Affairs

Capt. Thomas G. Morris relieved Capt. Louis V. Cariello as commanding officer of Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia (EURAFSWA) in a change of command ceremony, May 17, at Naval Support Activity Naples. “I’m honored to be here because it gives me the opportunity to recognize and pay tribute to the importance of the partnership between Region and NAVFAC EURAFSWA and the work it does for our Navy, our nation, and the world at large, “ said guest speaker Rear Adm. Anthony E. Gaiani, commander of EURAFSWA. “All of whom have depended on Lou Cariello’s leadership, dedication, commitment to mission and people… to make this all happen.” Gaiani commended Cariello for his performance under extraordinarily difficult circumstances and challenges during a time of shrinking resources and fiscal constraints. “He’s been the right man, in the right place, at the right

time, and I think all of us owe him a debt of gratitude for the leadership he’s shown,” said Gaiani. During his tenure, Cariello guided a workforce of more than 1,100 military and civilian personnel in the execution of an unprecedented $1.5 billion Military Construction program throughout six installations, a wide array of remote sites and three continents. Cariello also provided outstanding facilities products and services to five hightempo, operationally-diverse combatant commanders, enabling critical mission accomplishment. Additionally, Cariello managed the region’s $330 million facilities budget through substantial fiscal constrains and facilitated long-range shore facility investment solutions. During the ceremony, Rear Adm. Douglas G. Morton, commander of Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Atlantic, presented the Legion of Merit to Cariello for his service as commanding officer from July 2011 to May 2013. “I have loved this place, this job, and this command. The value of any experience you have in life comes down to sharing those experiences with

the people around you,” said Cariello. “I have been surrounded by a wonderful team here at EURAFSWA.” Cariello thanked the men and women, military and civilian he served with over the past two years. He then turned to Morris and passed the baton over to the new leader. “It’s an honor to be joining you and a privilege to be in command of such a high-performing organization,” said Morris. “We will maintain the momentum already established and continue to deliver the highest level of construction and facilities services to the region and its supported commanders. A native of Texas and raised in Oklahoma, Morris graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1985, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering and management. He earned a master's degree in industrial engineering at Oklahoma State University, and a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Texas. Morris is a registered professional engineer in the State of Oklahoma. His most recent assignment was deputy commander of operations at NAVFAC Atlantic in Norfolk.

The Naples Overseas Support Club (NOSC) sponsored six member delegates and three community delegates to the 57th Annual Americans Working Around the Globe (AWAG) Leadership and Training Seminar held at Edelweiss Lodge and Resort in Garmisch, Germany, May 5-9. The theme for this year's seminar was "Leading by Serving" and over 200 delegates from Germany, Belgium, Italy and United Kingdom attended the four days of training. Gen. Philip M. Breedlove, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, thanked volunteer delegates "for always being there for his family" during the opening ceremonies. He said without volunteers our communities could not support our military and their families. Maj. Gen. Michael S. Repass, commander of Special Operations Command Europe, provided a look at "Why Are We in Europe?” In addition, Command Sergeant Major Chris Faris and his wife took the stage on Monday to offer a very authentic look at how deployments and war take their toll on marriage. Faris has spent much of his adult life in the military's most secretive, frequently deployed units. The operational tempo only increased after 9/11. He is now the senior enlisted adviser to Adm. William H. McRaven, commander of U.S. Special Operations Command in Tampa, Fla. The Faris’ story was wrought with emotion and gave delegates an inside look at how PTSD can change everything. Another keynote speakers was Kathy Roth-Douquet, co-founder and CEO of Blue Star Families, a military family organization. She provided delegates with findings from the 2013 Military Family Lifestyle Survey which highlight key concerns identified by military family members. "Pay/benefits, with specific emphasis on changes to retirement benefits, military spouse employment, the effects of deployment on children, and issues surrounding military child education," said Roth-Douquet when addressing the key concerns. She said the survey reveled that 92 percent of respondents felt the general public does not truly understand the sacrifices made by service members and their families. "The AWAG conference was one if the best leadership development conferences I have attended,” said Chioma Griffin, an NSA Naples community member. “I learned invaluable organization development skills that contributed to my personal and professional goals. I would recommend this conference as a priority on your to do list for volunteers and those serving in any leadership capacity." More than 90 different sessions on a variety of subjects offered volunteers training in recruiting, managing, engaging, motivating and training volunteers. "I can't wait to try some of the things I learned at AWAG in our community," said NOSC member Natalie Goes. NOSC is an organization open to all members of the Naples community. It provides social and educational resources, as well as the Thrift Store, to the community. AWAG is an organization whose mission is to train, strengthen, and connect volunteers, and their organizations and their communities. All volunteers in the community are invited to participate in AWAG conferences. Naples will host a mini-AWAG conference in October 2013. Those interested in attending or speaking should contact italysouth@awagonline.org.

FFSC Tip of the Week: Personal Financial Management From the Fleet and Family Support Center

What if I gave you a cookie and told you that you could eat the cookie now or if you wait a little while and you could have two cookies. What would you do? Some people may devour the cookie immediately while others may grudgingly wait but are rewarded with a second cookie. Planning for retirement creates a similar situation. Each pay period we earn a certain amount of money. Some spend each dollar while others set aside money with the goal of having it increase in value. Saving even small amounts of money can grow over time to build wealth. This is especially true for young adults. One millionaire scenario is for a person to start saving $79 dollars at the age of 25 and continue to save that amount until age 65. At retirement, this person would have $500,000. Does this make you want to wait for that second cookie? Make compound interest work for you and start saving today. Need help? Call Fleet and Family Support at 629-6372 or 081811-6372 for the monthly Savings and Investing class schedule and to sign up today.

Guest Speaker from Rome Shares Holocaust Account By MC2 Jason Howard, Navy Public Affairs Support ElementEast Detachment Europe

The U.S. Naval Forces EuropeAfrica/ U.S. 6th Fleet MultiCultural Committee presented a Holocaust Remembrance Observance at the Capodichino Theater on Naval Support Activity Naples, May 14. “This is an important opportunity to review the history of the horror that is the Holocaust,” said Rear Adm. Frederick J. Roegge, deputy commander of U.S. 6th Fleet. “We tend to think that will never happen again. We’ve come a long way in society, but unfortunately humanity

doesn’t change that much over time and it is imperative that we use this opportunity to make ourselves sensitive the injustices in the world.” Guest speaker Piero Ter racina, born and raised in Rome, Italy, verbalized his personal experiences dealing with the horrors of the Auschwitz concentration camp. “On October 16, 1943 the first raid of the ‘Ghetto’ in Rome occurred,” said Terracina. “My family and I escaped arrest during the raid, but later we were caught and sent to Auschwitz.” Terracina discussed further about his time in Auschwitz.

“I was only fifteen and yet I felt as if I lived three lifetimes of horror,” Terracina said. “Out of eight family members, I was the only one who made it back home to Italy.” He said the only way he knew how to keep going was to live day by day and find strength with other prisoners. Terracina said he tried not to think about his family and what happened to them. “I was desperately holding onto life, and the only way I knew how to cope was to live in the moment and not think about tomorrow,” said Terracina. He said remembering what happened to millions of people during the Holocaust is imperative to preventing a tragedy like this from happening again. “Know the past. Always compare your society’s policies with your own personal values,” said Terracina. “It is good to obey orders, but if you obey them blindly without question, you risk repeating history,” Terracina maintains his dedication to the education and preservation of “Shoah”, Holocaust, remembrance and history by speaking at schools and universities. He often travels with students to Auschwitz. For more information on Holocaust Days of Remembrance, visit www.ushmm. org/remembrance/dor.

CtF 65 Sailor reenlists at ancient roman amphitheater

Information Systems Technician 1st Class David Twaruszka took the oath of enlistment for the third time in his career Friday, May 17, committing himself to six more years of service to the United States Navy. The reenlistment took place at Amphitheater Capua in Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Italy, just north of Caserta. Twaruszka, who has been in the Navy for almost 13 years, and his wife, Viviana, were joined by Commander, Task Force 65 (CTF 65) staff members in the arena of the amphitheater to witness the honorable discharge and oath of enlistment administered by Captain John Esposito, Commodore of Destroyer Squadron 60 and CTF 65. “I am so proud of Dave and his decision to reenlist,” Mrs. Twaruszka said before her husband began the re-enlistment traditions. “He always has so much pride for the U.S. Navy when he talks about it, and he loves his job. I know that this is the right decision for us.” After the ceremony, CTF 65 personnel were able to tour the ancient ruins’ subterranean passages and the Gladiator Museum located on the premises. Amphitheater Capua, dating back to the time of Augustus, is the central location for the first season of the Starz television series, “Spartacus: Blood and Sand.” “It’s nice to see everyone out of the office,” said Twaruszka on having his fellow staff members accompany him to the Roman ruins. “So much of the time we are in the office working that we miss all of the beautiful places right outside. I’m glad that everyone could join me for this big moment in life as well as experience a part of the unique culture right here in Italy.” All in all, it was a great opportunity for everyone in attendance to take part in a time-honored Naval tradition, as well as get a little fresh air and explore a piece of Italian history.

If you are the victim of a crime, report the incident to Security Dispatch at 081-568-5638.

HE GREAT GATSBY, PG-13, Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher. Drama, 142 min. The film follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the superrich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

URASSIC PARK, PG-13, Cast: Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Bob Peck. Action/Adventure, 127 min. The film follows two dinosaur experts -- Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Dr. Ellie Sattler Laura Dern) -- as they are invited by eccentric millionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) to preview his new amusement park on an island off Costa Rica. By cloning DNA harvested from pre-historic insects, Hammond has been able to create living dinosaurs for his new Jurassic Park, an immense animal preserve housing real brachiosaurs, dilophosaurs, triceratops, velociraptors, and a Tyrannosaur Rex. Accompanied by cynical scientist Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), who is obsessed with chaos theory, and Hammond's two grandchildren (Ariana Richards and Joseph Mazzello), they are sent on a tour through Hammond's new resort in computer controlled touring cars. But as a tropical storm hits the island, knocking out the power supply, and an unscrupulous employee (Wayne Knight) sabotages the system so that he can smuggle dinosaur embryos out of the park, the dinosaurs start to rage out of control. Grant then has to bring Hammond's grandchildren back to safety as the group is pursued by the gigantic man-eating beasts.

PREVENTION TRAINING

Continued from Page 1

The comedian spoke to Sailors about how difficult experiences steered his life in a positive direction. “By the time I was 25, I had three DUIs under my belt, lost my job, and my relationships with other people were in shambles,” said McGrenahan during the all-hands session. “One day I took a good look at my life and decided I really needed help.” Cmdr. Brian Stamm, USFF deputy chaplain, set aside time to separately address religious ministries personnel. He talked about their duty to provide confidential ministerial support and counseling to service members and families in need. “I appreciated the deputy chaplain taking out time to discuss the importance of the support we provide as members of the local religious ministries teams, specifically the confidential support services we offer community members,” said Chief Religious Programs Specialist Rafael Barney from Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia. USFF typically sends a team of experts to Naples every year to discuss critical issues facing the fleet. The team is expected to return next year. Religious Ministries Note

By Cmdr. Phil Pelikan, Command Chaplain

One of the most challenging evolutions in religious program management is change, or more specifically, changing the worship service schedule. Upon suggestion from members of my staff, there appeared to be a window of opportunity to improve our services for the benefit of the entire community. After careful consideration of a recommended change, NSA Naples will maintain the current worship schedule. With a reduction in staff, the current schedule has been a challenge to sustain. Thanks to the efforts of our Religious Ministries personnel and the numerous volunteers who assist us, we will work to find efficiencies and consolidate resources in ways that will enable us to maintain our first-rate ministerial support to the entire community. If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact me directly and I will be happy to discuss them with you. My email address is philip.pelikan@ eu.navy.mil. Given the many services available in the NSA Naples Command Religious Program, I look forward to seeing everyone in church!

Special Programs: Think Equal Opportunity Advisor By MC2 Andrea Perez, Navy Personnel Command Public Affairs

Sailors looking to enhance their career by working outside their rate should consider becoming an Equal Opportunity Advisor (EOA), Navy leaders said May 22. "Equal opportunity advisors play a vital role in the Navy's ability to maintain operational readiness and accomplish its mission," said Senior Chief Sonar Technician (Surface) Mark Vandervort, EOA detailer, Navy Personnel Command (NPC). According to MILPERSMAN 1306-917, EOAs can stimulate a free-flow of communication at all levels within a chain of command, making them an invaluable asset to the Navy. Vandervort says EOAs are command climate experts who strengthen a chain of command by keeping leadership aware of any equal opportunity related issues as well as procedures and practices that may affect the mission, readiness, welfare and morale of Sailors. "Those commands that can capitalize on their Sailor's skill sets are those that perform the best," said Vandervort. "As the command climate expert, it is the EOA's responsibility to assess the command climate and determine not only what is working right within a command, but also identify potential barriers that may prohibit Sailors from achieving their full potential." Sailors in pay grades E-6 to E-9 may be eligible to apply for EOA duty after being interviewed by an EOA. To become an EOA, Sailors must earn the 9515 Equal Opportunity Advisor Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC) by attending the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute at Patrick Air Force Base in Cocoa Beach, Fla. "The EOA course is intense but rewarding," said Vandervort. "The training not only provides students with the tools required to be an EOA, but also provides them with a variety of tools that will allow them to grow as leaders." The 12-week EOA course provides training in gender communications and cultural awareness, socialization, conflict management, complaints processing, interpersonal communications, and many other topics. "EOAs ensure Sailors are being treated fairly and with the dignity and respect with which all Sailors should expect to be treated. When utilized correctly, the EOA can be an integral member of the command's leadership team," said Vandervort. EOAs are assigned to major shore commands, nuclear aircraft carriers, amphibious assault ships and training commands. A complete listing of eligibility requirements can be found in MILPERSMAN 1306-917. Sailors who meet the requirements and would like to apply for EOA duty should request release to Special Programs by submitting a completed NAVPERS 1306/7 to their rating detailer prior to entering their normal detailing window. The required obligated service for an EOA tour is 36 months, and members selected are required to complete two full consecutive EOA tours, one sea and one shore. Special Program detailers assign Sailors to more than 20 special programs Navy-wide, including Recruit Division Commander duty and recruiting duty, service on the USS Constitution or the USS Arizona Memorial, and assignment to the Blue Angels or the Navy Ceremonial Guard. MILPERSMAN 1306-900 contains a complete list of special programs available.

US and Egyptian Navies Increase Interoperability By MC2 James Turner, USS Gravely Public Affairs

The guided-missile destroyer USS Gravely (DDG 107) participated in a combined passing exercise with the Egyptian navy ship Toushka (FFG 906) in the Mediterranean Sea, May 20. The passing exercise was highlighted by each ship’s visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) team boarding the other ship. Egyptian navy personnel who embarked Gravely during the exercise were able to observe a damage-control drill and a man-overboard drill. Passing exercises like this one demonstrates cooperation and communication between two or more navies, and also prepares ships for possible future multi-national efforts to ensure maritime security and regional stability. Amphibious dock landing ship USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) performed a similar passing exercise with the Egyptian navy April 7 in the Red Sea. “Our passing exercise with the Egyptian navy ship Toushka provided a tremendous opportunity for both crews to meet and learn from each other,” said Cmdr. David Dry, Gravely’s com-

manding officer. “Cooperative events like today’s serve to improve and strengthen both of our nations’ maritime security capabilities.” Before the exercise began, the ships from both nations participated in an officer exchange so that both sides could acquire a better understanding of the capabilities and methods of the other navy. "The Egyptian crew was very helpful and professional,” said Lt. j.g. Natalie Ferbezar, training officer aboard Gravely. "It is always a great opportunity for both sides to train together and learn different methods and techniques.” Egyptian personnel involved also felt that the combined training was valuable. "This has been a very enjoyable learning experience for us,” said Egyptian navy Lt. Islam Marawan. “Gravely’s crew has both great seamanship and outstanding teamwork. I think both teams learned from the exercise.” Gravely, homeported in Norfolk, is on a scheduled deployment supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the 6th Fleet area of responsibility.

Montessori School Holds Science Fair By Robert Orwein, Anglo-Italian School (Montessori Division)

More than 200 multicultural students from the NATO community participated in the annual Montessori School Science Fair, May 14. Students from 1st through 8th grade, as well as an advanced class of 9-12 grade students, spent two months creating science projects at the Anglo-Italian School (Montessori Division) located at the Allied Joint Force Command Naples Bagnoli location. The entire NATO community and parents of

the students were invited to observe the children’s projects during the science fair. Projects included Tornado in a Bottle, Renewable Energy, Erosion, Making Fire with Water, Rocket Car, Worm Behavior, Electromagnetism and Is Hand Washing an Effective Way to Remove Bacteria. Gregory Podasca, Emilio Palumbo and John Murphy said it was incredibly difficult to pick this year’s overall class winners. The judges named a project winner for each class. The Montessori School has been in Bagnoli since 1958 and is primarily for NATO students.

AFN Announces Need to Tweak Decoder Settings By George A. Smith, AFN Europe

The American Forces Network (AFN) Europe is eliminating one of its two satellite transponders in order to reduce redundant capability and decrease overall operating cost. This will require decoder owners to make minor changes June 4-24 to ensure they continue to receive AFN. “This change is necessary to align budget constrained operations and continue to provide quality AFN service,” said AFN Europe Commander Lt. Col. Sherri Reed. "But we’re doing all we can to help. Starting June 4, use our app to view easyto-understand instructions at www.afneurope.net, as well as all of the channel changes. You can also get help by calling our network operation center 24/7 at DSN (314)-634-8228 or +39-044-471-8228.” All AFN Europe decoder owners, including U.S. consulates and embassies, must change decoder frequency and net ID settings June 4-24 or they will be unable to receive AFN satellite radio and TV channels. Viewers who get their AFN TV service via onbase cable from a provider do not have to do anything. Contractors will be making the necessary changes. AFN technicians will make the necessary changes in Afghanistan.

The changes will result in a realignment of some satellite radio and TV channels. Decoder owners will notice more changes than viewers who get their AFN from on-base cable. Twelve redundant AFN|prime Atlantic channels and AFN|prime Freedom will no longer be available. These decoder channels offered the same TV shows with local community messages targeted toward specific military installations. The AFN Europe audience will still get local community messages on radio, www.afneurope.net, social media and AFN 360: Internet Radio. AFN Europe will air the TV spots for the U.S. military serving in Afghanistan on AFN|sports. In preparation for AFN migrating to an upgraded digital signal later on this year, viewers should not purchase or lease any decoder that is not the newest model, the CISCO D9865. When the switch to this digital signal occurs, all AFN decoders other than the D9865 will no longer function. AFN Europe anticipates changes this year as it works to provide the American military with quality entertainment and command information, while simultaneously being good stewards of taxpayer dollars.

Amanda Ortega, a sophomore, has been named the Girl’s Soccer Athlete of the Month. Ortega is a two-year veteran of the Naples Wildcats girl’s soccer team. In that time, she has played forward, outside defender, and center midfielder. Her versatile skill set has made her a remarkable "utility player," one able to step into any position on the field and excel. Ortega’s hard work during the off-season has resulted in a definitive improvement of her already honed skill set. She demonstrated this by scoring the first goal of the season while playing as a defender in the 4-1 defeat of the Vicenza Cougars at Vicenza. Ortega is a great teammate with a positive attitude who supports her team on and off the field. Whether scoring, assisting, or just working hard in practice, she is a valuable member of the team. Ortega participated in the American Youth Soccer Association (AYSO) from 4th grade through 8th grade. She was selected for and played with the AYSO All-Star team for three seasons prior to coming to Italy. As a student athlete, Ortega’s academic performance is unsurpassed as she has been an honor roll student each quarter with a 4.0 grade point average.

Ashley Forte, a junior, has been named the Girl’s Track and Field Athlete of the Month. At Naples High School’s first track meet at Aviano against Division I power house Vilseck, Division II rival Ansbach and conference rivals Vicenza and Aviano, Forte flew past the competition and at the same time qualified for the European Track Championships in late May for two events. Her performance in securing qualifying spots at Europeans in the open 200 meter and open 400 meter runs was a remarkable achievement given it was our first meet of the season. Forte is an integral part of the girls 4 x 400 relay team and a budding track team captain selection for next year.

Davina Gutierrez, a junior, has been named the Softball Athlete of the Month. Gutierrez had a batting average of .462 with 6 runs, 3 RBIs and 1 home run against Aviano. She was also the winning pitcher. Not only is she a solid athlete and all around softball player, Gutierrez has stepped up to assume a leadership role when the captains cannot be at practice. She mentors the younger players and is a good role model. She consistently excels both on the field and off.

Dylan Kessler, a senior, has been named the Boy’s Soccer Athlete of the Month. Kessler has distinguished himself by playing starting center midfielder for the Naples Wildcat boy’s soccer team. Dylan has consistently displayed leadership and determination on the field by playing aggressive, competitive games against other teams in Italy. He was limited by an injury during the past month, but continued to persevere with a positive attitude by encouraging his teammates to give it their all on the field. Whether on defense or offense, he has been an outstanding role model for our team this year. Dylan assumes leadership roles in his JROTC unit and has attained academic honors every quarter. He has also excelled on the track and field and basketball teams this year.

Kyle Baldree, a senior, has been named the Baseball Athlete of the Month. Baldree lead the Wildcat Baseball team with 10 RBIs last weekend to ensure victories over Vicenza and Aviano. He leads the team in on-base percentage (.650) and has not made an error in 10 games. Baldree is a co-captain for the team. He has earned Eagle Scout and currently has a 4.1 GPA.

LCDR KATHRYN A. GARNER We often see and hear about the front line doctors, nurses and corpsmen, but what about those behind the scenes? The recent Joint Commission accreditation was accomplished in large part due to the hard work of Lt. Cmdr. Kathy Garner. As department head of Quality Management, Garner provides oversight of all physician credentials, patient safety, performance improvement, Inspector General Programs and healthcare relations. “This has been a very rewarding experience, it’s one of the few jobs that you can profoundly impact every department within the hospital”, said Garner. A registered nurse trained at Norfolk State, she eventually earned her Master’s in Health Science and became the first active duty Navy member to become certified as a Specialist in Healthcare Accreditation. She continues to serve as the command’s only certified Wound Care Nurse and is frequently consulted by all specialties. Garner began her career as a Hospital Corpsman in 1985 and uses that experience to actively mentor junior staff members. Her effective job performance gained the attention of the U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, leading to Garner being hand selected to continue her career as the sole nursing representative to the Medical Inspector General team in Washington, D.C.
