NCT’s ‘Noises Off’ is a Howling Good Time From Naples Community Theatre

The Naples Community Theatre’s production of Michael Frayn’s comedy, “Noises Off” is a brilliantly acted and spirited production well worth the price of admission. The show takes a comedic look at a production during three different phases: the final dress rehearsal, a performance four weeks later, and during the final performance. This special engagement, arranged through Samuel French inc., follows nine cast members through the trials and tribulations of staging a show, with often hilarious results. Playing the role of Dotty, the lovely and talented Meghan Berryman quickly sets the tone for what is to come, slipping seamlessly through

accents and transitioning from mania to depression with believability. Her comedic timing is flawless, and her ability to deliver the same lines with totally different inflection is both hysterical and remarkable. As Belinda, the effervescent Katrina Dransfield provides a calming and rational perspective to offset the zaniness of her fellow cast mates. She has perfected an almost Bea Arthur-like stare of disbelief, and it is on full display throughout the performance. Her quiet and sensible mannerisms allow the audience to see the insanity of others, and her quick wit keeps the plot steamrolling along. As Freddie, Vince Hess creates a likeable and charming idiot, a sweet and innocent actor without a drop of

guile. His intelligent performance of this simple man shows a depth and understanding of comedy, and provides some of the show’s most endearing moments. One almost begins to feel sorry for Freddie, who finds himself catapulted along without knowing quite how. Jim Farmer creates a hilariously inarticulate character as Garry, a seasoned professional who cannot adapt to any sudden change in line or stage position. An adept physical comedian, Farmer provides the mania of the piece, creating memorable laughs through pratfalls, sudden confusion of props, and by delivering rambling speeches completely devoid of nouns. The United States has a clear way forward with the 2018 National Defense Strategy to restore the military’s competitive edge in an era of re-emerging long-term great power competition, Defense Secretary James N. Mattis told the Senate Armed Services Committee April 26, 2018. Mattis, who spoke in a hearing on the Defense Department’s budget, highlighted the three priorities of the defense strategy: build a more lethal force, strengthen alliances and build new partnerships, and reform the department’s business practices for performance and affordability. “The strategy is the guidepost for all our actions, including this year's strategy-driven budget request, driving meaningful reform to establish an enduring culture of performance, affordability and agility,” Mattis said. The National Defense Strategy, framed within President Donald J. Trump’s National Security Strategy, supports a strong and lethal military, the secretary said. DOD WAY FORWARD Page 7

CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Todd Abrahamson NSA Naples Commanding Officer

Our Mission was highlighted this past week as we hosted the USS New York (LPD 21) and 12 A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft from the U.S. Air Force 455th Air Expeditionary Wing. The New York is deployed as part of Amphibious Squadron 4 in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations, and the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing was returning home from their deployment to Afghanistan where they supported counter-terrorism operations. Amid our day to day responsibilities, it’s easy to forget the real reason each and every one of us is here, but visits like these are perfect examples of the missions we all support. Not only does NSA Naples provide a secure environment to facilitate the multiple staffs here being able to plan important missions around the region, we also get to support the operational units who come through here while executing those missions. Whether you’re a service member, civilian employee or dependent, please don’t forget that we all play an important role in supporting these warfighters and the missions they carry out. Check out our Facebook page for some great imagery of both visits! Together with air operations and port operations, NSA Naples also takes our commitment to quality of life services very seriously. Our MWR program here is an important part of those services and I think it’s important to address the recent news about pool charges here. First, it’s important to note that the elimination of fees occurred for pools at NS Rota, NAS Sigonella and NSA Naples in 2015. This was the result of a strong MWR fund financial condition within Region EURAFSWA in 2014. Because of that strong position, MWR was able to pass on the benefit to Sailors and their families in a number of programs. Unfortunately, the Navy-wide MWR fund position has become much less sound this year and has forced regional MWR programs to review all pricing levels, programs and services. To keep prices as low as possible, the fees were reinstituted at the same price as they were at those locations in 2014. MWR continually reviews pricing structures in all of their programs and will closely monitor and recommend changes where possible to keep fees as reasonable as possible and still maintain financial solvency. The fees will not completely offset the costs of maintaining and operating the pools, but they will help produce enough revenue to maintain operating hours for our community pools here in Naples, and those in Sigonella and Rota. Another important topic this month in in addition to driving and motorcycle safety, is Mental Health Awareness Month. Since 1949, the United States and various organizations have observed this month in an effort to raise mental health awareness and encourage those with questions to contact their healthcare providers. Just like our bodies, we need to keep our minds fit in order to do our jobs and take care of ourselves and our families. Fortunately the Navy has a number of resources available to assist those that are experiencing a mental health issue or just need a simple check-up. If you feel you need some help or simply want more information, please reach out to our healthcare professionals or chaplain corps to get started in the right direction. Seeking help for routine life crises does not reflect adversely on an individual’s judgement. Instead, it should be viewed as a positive sign that, like with a physical injury, an individual recognizes the problem and is willing to take the right steps toward treatment and recovery. As always, thanks for reading the Panorama! For more information about NSA Naples, please follow us on Twitter @NSA_Naples and Facebook at facebook.com/NSANaples/ Buon fine settimana – and remain vigilant.

Foggo Marks Liberation Day with a Personal Touch By U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Mark Patton

U.S. Navy Adm. James Foggo, commander of Allied Joint Force Command Naples, marked Italy’s Liberation Day with a visit to his father’s cousin’s grave in Gradara, picturesque medieval city along the Adriatic Coast in Northern Central Italy, April 25. Captain James Anderson fought with the King’s Royal Rifle Corps during World War II and was killed in action in 1944. Foggo’s father was fighting the Germans in the north after the landing in Normandy when Anderson arrived to southern Italy with the British Forces. Anderson, a father of two, died at the age of 35 while serving in the campaign to liberate Italy. “Captain James Anderson came to Italy with the same mission my father had: to fight tyranny,” Foggo said during a ceremony in Gradara. “James died while my father survived.” The commander of JFC Naples also noted that he’s the first from his family to

visit Anderson’s tomb. “It is an honor for me to do so on the very day marking the anniversary of the liberation of Italy,” Foggo said. During an April 20 gathering of JFC Naples personnel, the commander touched on the lasting impact of Allied troops in the region. “Many people made sacrifices during the time of the second World War to eliminate tyranny and provide for peace,” Foggo said. “And if you think about that, that’s what we are doing throughout the region today.” Foggo noted that Anderson’s sacrifice was not senseless as it contributed to the freedom many enjoy today. He ended his remarks at the Liberation Day ceremony with a message of enduring commitment and the strength of an Alliance. “If James were alive today, I think he would be proud of the Alliance and of this country, Italy, for which he died,” Foggo added. “Thank you very much, James. Long live Italy, long live the NATO Alliance.”

HISTORY: VE DAY – SPOTLIGHT: Germany Surrendered to Allies LT. JENNIFER CRAIG From DoD News

When President Harry S Truman, British Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill and Soviet Premier Josef Stalin simultaneously announced that Nazi Germany had surrendered on May 8, 1945, the joy Americans felt was tempered by where they were. The war that began with Germany invading Poland September1, 1939, ended with the total defeat of the Nazi menace and the unconditional surrender of the German military. In New York, London and Moscow the eruption of joy was instantaneous. Men and women rushed to the streets to hug and kiss and dance. The war against Nazi Germany was over. The killing had stopped. A great evil ended. The End of a Long Road On the front lines deep in Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia, the celebration was more muted, with soldiers gradually realizing they were not going to be shot at anymore and were going to go home. Their joy was further tempered because, while Germany was defeated, Japan fought on. The soldiers realized their divisions, brigades and units would be part of the invasion of Japan. In the Pacific, there was a brief acknowledgement that the European battle was over, but it didn’t really matter to the soldiers and Marines who were still attacking Japanese positions on Okinawa or to the Sailors who were fending off kamikaze attacks on ships off the island. VE Day signified the end of a long road. Just between June 1944 and May 8, 1945, there were 552,117 U.S. casualties in the European theater of operations. Of those, 104,812 were killed in action. In January 1945, many believed the war in Europe would last much longer. In January, U.S. Army soldiers were still battling against German forces that had launched the Battle of the Bulge. That battle was the largest the U.S. Army ever fought and out of the 90,000 casualties around 19,000 soldiers were killed. Events accelerated from there.

The War Moves into Germany Bombing missions continued over Germany and every B-17 or B-24 lost over the Reich meant a loss of 10 Americans. On the ground, Allied troops mopped up German resistance on the west bank of the Rhine River. On March 7, 1945, soldiers from the 9th Armored Division secured the Ludendorff Bridge over the Rhine River in Remagen, Germany. The U.S. 1st Army vaulted the water barrier and struck deep into Germany. The 3rd Army also crossed the river and moved on. On March 22, U.S. and British forces launch a massive operation over the Rhine in Oppenheim. On April 2, U.S. forces surrounded 600,000 Germans in the Ruhr Pocket. Throughout the month, American forces begin discovering the consequences of the Nazi ideology as they liberated death camps like Buchenwald, Ohrdurf and Dachau. On April 12, Americans were shocked by the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Harry S Truman was sworn in and vowed to continue Roosevelt’s policies. On April 21, Soviet forces began their assault on the German capital of Berlin. With the Soviets closing in, Hitler committed suicide on April 30 and turns power over to Admiral Karl Donitz. Surrender On May 2, German forces in Berlin surrendered to the Soviets. On May 7, formal negotiations for Germany’s surrender began at the Supreme headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force headquarters in Rheims, France, and the Germans surrender unconditionally the next day. At the conclusion of the surrender, the allied staff attempted to write a message for General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower to send to allied leaders. He opted for “The mission of this Allied Force was fulfilled at 0241, May 7th, 1945.”

Lt. Jennifer Craig has been named Junior Physical Therapist of 2017 by Navy Medicine. Craig just finished her tour at U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Naples and has begun working with Special Warfare Team 2 at Little Creek, Virginia. The competition was tight as Craig was up against several other candidates throughout the Navy Medicine enterprise. USNH Naples Commanding Officer Capt. Steven Blivin relayed his appreciation for Craig’s hard work. “I have no doubt that Naples has the ‘best of the best’ people in Navy Medicine but it is nice to see that sentiment through Navy-wide recognition,” he said. The announcement, made by Cmdr. Carrie Dreyer from Navy Personnel Command, was released as Craig was traveling from Italy to the United States. Although no longer officially attached to USNH Naples, Craig’s impact to the Physical Therapy team and the hospital continues to be felt. During her time at USNH Naples, Craig and her team of physical therapy technicians received the Navy Medicine Best of the Best Military Treatment Facility Specialty Care Clinics and ranked 4th in all of Navy Medicine with 100 percent patient satisfaction per Joint Outpatient Experience Survey (JOES) during fiscal year 2017, quarter one. Further, the department was able to decrease its noshow rate by 6.1 percent, which allowed for an increase in access to care by over a day and a half. The Physical Therapy team helps patients with minor and major injuries return to their normal activities and decrease physical pain. The staff of USNHN wishes Lt. Craig farewell and following seas and is confident she will continue to make an impact on Navy Medicine.

Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month From NSA Naples Safety Office

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Motorcycle riders must always remember that they are a small object on the roads, and to always wear appropriate protective gear all the time (ATGATT) to make yourself visible to traffic and in all types of weather. If riding on two wheels you need to pay close attention to the traffic around you, and especially traffic coming from behind you. Always look for escape lanes. With hot weather now upon us the oil will start to come to the surface on the asphalt, leaking diesel or fuel spills are rarely seen – but when they do happen – are very slick. Slow your speed. Do not drink and ride. Do not ride fatigued. Check over-the-counter and prescription medications for negative side-effects and do not mix medications and alcohol. Be safe. Look out for fellow riders, and if you see them riding foolishly, mentor them. Always remember, riding is a privilege, not a right. Next week begins the Naples Motorcycle Safety Week. Training will held on the following dates and times:

● May 7 Capodichino Theater Safety Standown for ALL motorcycle riders from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. ● May 7 Support Site Range from 1 to 5 p.m. ● May 8 Support Site Range 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. ● May 8 Support Site Range from 1 to 5 p.m. ● May 9 Support Site Range from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. ● May 9 Support Site Range from 1 to 5 p.m. ● May 10 Basic Rider Course 2 at Support Site Range 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ● May 11 Advance Rider Course at Support Site Community Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ● May 12 Basic Rider Course Day1 at Support Site Range from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ● May 13 Basic Rider Course Day2 at Support Site Range from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Note: Range exercises from May 7-9 will provide credit for two year recertification. ENERGY CONSERVATION Fuel Conservation Tips From NSA Naples Energy Management Team

Fuel conservation is important because not all fuels are renewable. This means we should use them as sparingly as possible and find alternative sources of energy because once these resources are depleted we will not be able to obtain them again. There are several technological advances being utilized today in an effort to conserve fuel. Fuel cells produce electrical power without any combustion and operate on fuels like hydrogen, natural gas and propane. They are a clean alternative to gasoline-powered generators. NASCAR uses at least 30 gasoline-powered generators to power remote cameras and broadcasting equipment during each race. If gasoline-powered generators were replaced with fuel cell units, they estimate that more than $2,000 per race weekend could be saved. That’s a savings of $77,000 over the course of the season. Plus, fuel cell generators only have to be refueled once per weekend helping improve race safety and logistics. Fuel Saving Tips ● Drive smoothly. Slowing down gradually, rather than jamming on the brakes, then accelerating slowly can save you as much as two miles per gallon. ● When driving on the highway, use your cruise control to maintain a steady speed. ● Remove unnecessary heavy items from your car. Every 100 pounds extra costs you about half a mile per gallon. ● Riding a bike or walk to work, to the local neighborhood store or to a nearby friend’s home, will cut your vehicle emissions to zero. ● Don’t start your car until you’re ready to move; idling engines waste gas. If you are idling for more than one minute turn the engine off. ● You can improve your gas mileage by 1 to 2 percent by using the manufacturer’s recommended grade of motor oil.

SOUND OFF: WHAT’S YOUR MOVIE SEQUEL?

YNC Elijah Ramirez “‘The Big Lebowski,’ because it’s a classic.”

Mike Wenstrup “Follow up to the latest ‘Star Wars,’ because I’m a big fan.”

NAPLES COMMUNITY THEATRE From page 1 Amanda Muzyka is a delightful performer who provides a sweetness and lightness to the show as the inept but well-meaning Assistant Stage Manager, Poppy. Her interpretation of the role as a novice actress who believes she is ready for the bright lights is innovative, and the sudden collapse she provides when Poppy is called upon to take a role is truly memorable. Michael Salvitti as Tim, the production’s much harried and putupon Stage Manager, is a riot. His nearly comatose initial characterization sets the stage for a manic and terrified third act, when he must step onto the stage as the injured Freddie. His wide-eyed and horrified non-actor moments are in sharp contrast to the professional demeanor of his cast mates, and belie the capable actor Salvitti is. Erinn Sudol’s Vicki is the ultimate idiot blonde, a vacuous and clueless ex-burlesque performer who blithely sails through every line, even when the show is clearly off the rails. The brilliance with which Sudol portrays the moronic is rare, as it takes true intelligence to play someone this

stupid. Sudol’s Vicki remains true to herself throughout, even though she is often adrift in her own world. Cydne Palmer nearly steals the show as the way past his prime burglar, Selsdon. As an aged and infirm actor who may or may not be in on his own joke, Palmer plays the role with conviction, but also with a sly wink. The audience is never really quite sure if she is the dumbest, drunkest, or most brilliant actress on the stage, proving the exceptional skill and characterization Palmer has developed. Mark Reid wears two hats, as the Director of the NCT production and as Lloyd, the Director of the show within the show. Reid’s version has Lloyd somewhere between genius, letch, and lunatic, a frustrated and sarcastic Brit with a venomous tongue and a sly wink. His devolution from highbrow theatre god to dumbstruck hack is uproarious, and his overtly classist and arrogant characterization foreshadows his eventual collapse. In all, the NCT extends its capabilities with this production, proving it is much more than a small art house and demonstrating a talent base wider and more experienced than previously dis-

Neapolitan Mayscape Begins with ‘Maggio dei Monumenti’ By Lou Freed

Longer days, balmy weather and the monthlong “May Monuments” program in Naples heralds the season to take in cultural treasures and learn about the chosen, cherished Neapolitan personality for the occasion. Speaking of celebrating iconic figures, fireworks may light up the skies here and there for “Festa della Mamma,” May13, when Italians, along with Americans, pay homage to the special woman of the house. On the same day, Camposano (circa 20 miles from Gricignano) will hold a historical “palio” enhanced by a medieval costume parade and local culinary delights. For opera lovers, Verdi’s beloved “La Traviata” returns May 20 at the San Carlo Theater. Then as other cultural options, check out the art exhibits and Beethoven evenings in town. Last but not least, track the “Wine and the City” events honoring the nectar of the gods through May 25, held prior to Italy’s nationwide “Cantine Aperte” weekend, May 26-27. May Monuments This year’s initiative through June 3 focuses on one of Naples’ brilliant minds, Giambattista Vico, a17th-18th century philosopher. Born in Biagio dei Librai of the city’s Historic Center, Vico’s legacies will be recalled and elaborated with the most important cultural institutions of the city along with other offerings related to the thinker – readings, theater performances, conferences, exhibitions, multimedia installations and guided tours of the city along the Vichian paths. View program details at http://www.comune.napoli.it/ Mother’s Day “La festa della mamma” on the second Sunday of the month will undoubtedly generate family gatherings to toast motherhood. Among the stories on the occasion’s origin is the cult of Isis – fertile wife of Egyptian god Osiris and divine mother of pharaohs – whose esteem Roman soldiers brought home from Egypt. It is said the portrayal of Isis nursing her son, Horus, may have spawned Christian depictions of the Madonna and Child. What’s more, some florists recount roses were sacred to the goddess, making the flower a favorite Mother’s Day gift. Festival On May 13 Camposano in Naples province will re-enact the town’s independence from Nola featuring fun-filled festivities such as the “Palio del casale” (Donkey Race) preceded by a medieval costume parade then boosted by culinary treats in Piazza Umberto I. View photos and program details at http://www.paliodelcasale.it/ See program at http://terredicampania.it/eventi/palio-del-casale-avvincente-corsaasini/02/04/2018/ Art Art lovers may want to check out these exhibits at diverse venues. Virtual “Van Gogh Immersion” at the San Giovanni Maggiore Basilica in the Naples Historic Center through June 3; “I Dali” at the Palazzo Arte Napoli (PAN) located in via dei Mille through June 10 and “Amedeo Modigliani” at the Caserta Royal Palace through October 2018. Music As part of Naples’ “May Monuments” events, Villa Pignatelli (near the U.S.Consulate) will be the venue for Thursday evening Beethoven symphonies. Enjoy the musical genius’ pieces on May 10, 17, 24 and 31. For specifics, email maggiodellamusica@libero.it or call 081-556-1369.

Opera In celebrating mothers (and women), the San Carlo Theater presents Giuseppe Verdi’s fantastic opera, “La Traviata.” An evening with this theater favorite makes for a memorable gift for any occasion, Set in Paris, the work kindles a festive spirit through its elegant party scene -- lovely women in flowing gowns, smart-looking men in coat and tails plus sparkling chandeliers. Some opera patrons have commented the work’s signature song, “Libiamo ne’ lieti calici,” aka “Brindisi” (“Let’s Toast) is well remembered for its lilting, catchy melody recalling the refreshing sound of spring. Inspired by the novel, “La Dame aux Camelias,” by Alexander Dumas fils (son of Alexander Dumas), “La Traviata” (The Fallen Woman) recalls the poignant romance between a wealthy gentleman, Alfredo, and a beautiful courtesan, Violetta which may have been inspired by the writer’s love for a French courtesan himself. Musical Directors Jordi Bernacer and Maurizio Agostini along with Stage Director Lorenzo Amato will lead the San Carlo Theater Orchestra and cast of interpreters featuring a number of singers interpreting Alfredo and Violetta. Performances are scheduled May 20-June 20. Book online through http://www.teatrosancarlo.it . Gastronomy Wine and the City Mark your calendar for this wine-know event including tastings, culinary and sports events through May 25.
