VCNO Moran Joins Area Sailors for Pickup Basketball Game at Capo Gym By Petty Officer 1st Class Daniel Barker NSA Public Affairs

Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. William Moran visited U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa and U.S. 6th Fleet at Naval Support Activity Naples, Capodichino December 10. He met with enlisted Sailors and senior leadership including Adm. Michelle Howard and Vice Adm. Christopher Grady. “It’s important to stop into 6th Fleet to get a current operations update into this busy AOR,” Moran said. “The Sailors assigned to U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa are hard at work supporting the mission and we are proud of their dedication and appreciate them serving overseas along with their families.” While in Naples Moran stopped by the base gym, the Capo FitZone, and participated in a brief basketball tournament for fun and physical activity. “During our visit, we were able to get in a Sat-

Former astronaut and U.S. Senator John Glenn died December 8, 2016, at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. John Herschel Glenn Jr. was born July 18, 1921, in Cambridge, Ohio. He attended primary and secondary schools in New Concord, Ohio. He received a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Muskingum College in New Concord. He entered the Naval Aviation Cadet Program in March 1942. He graduated and was commissioned in the Marine Corps in 1943. After advanced training, he joined Marine Fighter Squadron 155 and flew 59 combat missions during World War II, and 63 missions during Korea with Marine Fighter Squadron 311. In July 1957, he set a transcontinental speed record from Los Angeles to New York – 3 hours and 23 minutes. It was the first transcontinental flight to average supersonic speed. Glenn accumulated nearly 9,000 hours of flying time, about 3,000 of it in jets. Glenn was one of NASA’s original seven Mercury astronauts. Glenn’s flight on Friendship 7 on February 20, 1962, showed the world that America was a serious contender in the space race with the Soviet Union. It also made Glenn an instant hero.

Wildcats Wrestlers Dive into First Meet of New Season in Vicenza By Jordan Hoffman Wrestling Team Captain

The Naples Wildcat wrestling team traveled to Vicenza the first weekend in December to participate in the first Wrestling tournament of the 2016-2017. Fueled with anticipation for the first meet of the season, Naples boasted a total of 97 team points, along with five first place champions, each in their respective weight classes. However, even with the impressive amount of points, Naples fell short of Vicenza’s 104. Regardless of the outcome, many new wrestlers to the team gained invaluable experience on the mats for the first time, and are looking to win this following meet. “We have a young team and they performed very well,” Wildcat Wrestling Head Coach Vito Vitulli said. “They learned a lot that day and we are looking forward to future competitions.” WILDCAT WRESTLING Page 11 CAPTAIN’S CORNER. . . . . . . . . 2 BASE NOTES. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 NAVY HISTORY . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4 FFSC CALENDAR . . . . . . . . . . . 5 SOUND OFF . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6 MOVIES . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9 JOBS . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 12

CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Doug Carpenter NSA Naples Commanding Officer

Our flags are flying at halfmast this week to honor and respect former astronaut and U.S. Sen. John Glenn at his passing. His long and storied career included multiple combat missions during World War II and a historical first as the first American to orbit the Earth. As a national icon, John Glenn embodied American ideals by pushing boundaries in space exploration and “paving the road” for future NASA missions to the moon. His extraordinary life was a direct reflection of the many opportunities the armed services provides to follow your dreams and achieve your goals. Whether you spend a few years or an entire career serving the nation, the lessons you learn, the bonds you form, and values you uphold will assist you in reaching your goals. Remember John Glenn for his courage as a Space Age Pioneer, for his service in the Armed Forces and Senate, and for his leadership teaching us the sky is no longer the limit. On Tuesday I attended a ceremony in honor of Italy’s patron saint of aviation, the Madonna di Loreto. The annual event is hosted by our Italian Air Force partners to protect those in the air from mishaps, incidents, or injuries for another year. The title of Madonna di Loreto refers to the Holy House of Loreto. The house in which Mary was born, and where the Annunciation occurred, and to an ancient statue of Our Lady which is found there. Tradition says that a band of angels scooped up the little house from the Holy Land, and transported it first to Tersato, Dalmatia in 1291, then Recanati, Italy in 1294, and finally to Loreto, Italy where it has been for centuries. Whether one believes in the legend or not, it is important to honor the local cultural significance of such celebrations especially around the holidays when many take place – and of course we are ALL working hard to achieve our Safety goals in the air and on the ground. As of this week NSA Naples has achieved 18 months without a DUI violation. This is a significant milestone not only for the health and safety of our community but also for the image of our command as representatives of the United States overseas. I applaud the members of our community for putting safety first and look forward (knock on wood) to continuing this trend. Always have a plan for getting home safely and be sure to use your command resources if you are in a bind. I would like to remind everyone that we have a tipsy taxi fund for emergency situations accessible with a simple phone call to the quarterdeck. Thanks to everyone for pitching in and making the base look great for the holidays! Stay safe and have a great weekend!

Vandals Break into Northern Italian Winery; Leak Equivalent of 400,000 Bottles of Wine From Seven Storage Tanks In the middle of the night vandals broke into a northern Italy winery and spilled the equivalent of 400,000 bottles of sparkling wine, mostly Pinot Grigio. The wine was maturing in seven refrigerated tanks that were drained by the raid causing an estimated loss of around €500,000 ($532,550). Vandals did not steal anything from the property or caused other damage, this is why the incident was considered an act of sabotage. According to the winery owner, he had not received threats or warnings. The investigation is ongoing.

Italian Survey Indicates Aosta Has Highest Quality of Life; Vibo Valentia has Lowest The Italian economic and financial daily Il Sole24Ore stated that Aosta in northwest Italy is the province with the highest quality of life, according to the survey published by the daily. Vibo Valentia in southern Calabria region is the province with the lowest quality of life. The survey evaluates the livability of the many provinces according to six factors: business, work and innovation; income, savings and consumption; the environment, services and welfare; population, family and integration; justice, security and crime; and culture, free time and participation. The improvement was driven by property values and the flow of tourists linked to the recent Jubilee.

NAVY HISTORY: ‘THE GREAT WHITE FLEET’

President Theodore Roosevelt. Courtesy of Naval History and Heritage Command From Naval History and Heritage Command

On the warm, cloudy morning of December 16, 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt stood on the weather-deck of the presidential yacht Mayflower, anchored in the waters off Hampton Roads, while throngs of onlookers on shore, watched as 16 battleships of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet, all painted white, save for gilded bows, steamed in a long majestic column out of Hampton Roads to the open sea, flanked by their attending auxiliary ships. The four squadrons of warships, later nicknamed the “Great White Fleet,” were manned by 14,000 Sailors and Marines under the command of Rear Adm. Robley “Fighting Bob” Evans. All were embarking upon a naval deployment the scale of which had never been attempted by any nation before – the first ‘round-the-world cruise by a fleet of steam-powered, steel battleships. The 43,000 mile, 14-month circumnavigation would include 20 port calls on six continents; it is widely considered one of the greatest peacetime achievements of the U.S. Navy. The idea of sending the new battle fleet around the world was the brainchild of the energetic president, a former colonel of the Rough Riders and one-time assistant secretary of the Navy. Roosevelt felt that only through a strong Navy could a nation project its power and prestige abroad.

In 1898, at the end of the Spanish-American War, the United States was thrust into the mainstream of international affairs and gained status as a world power, acquiring as possessions the Philippines and Guam in the Pacific, then Puerto Rico in the Caribbean. In 1904, the United States also established a naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to ensure the safety of the Panama Canal, which was still under construction. Roosevelt stressed the upgrading and expansion of the U.S. fleet to protect American interests abroad. From 1904 to 1907, American shipyards turned out 11 new battleships to give the Navy awesome battle capabilities. This was timely, for, in 1906, hostilities with Japan seemed possible; the Japanese navy dominated the Pacific and posed a potential threat to the Philippines. America’s problems with Japan arose shortly after Roosevelt mediated the Treaty of Portsmouth in 1906, ending the Russo-Japanese War. In that conflict the Russian fleet had been annihilated by the Japanese. But despite their triumphs over the Russians on the high seas, the Japanese failed to get all they felt they deserved at the peace table and blamed Roosevelt for it. Roosevelt didn’t want a break with Japan, as the United States was ill-prepared for war. Most of our battle fleet was concentrated in the Atlantic, and there were only a handful of armored cruisers on duty in the Pacific. In the event of war with Japan, this small contingent that made up the Asiatic Battle Fleet would have to abandon the Philippines for West Coast ports until the United States had strength enough to go on the offensive. Thus, to impress upon Japan that the U.S. Navy could shift from the Atlantic to the Pacific, Roosevelt ordered the Great White Fleet to sail around the world. The president also wanted to find out what condition the fleet would be in after such a transit. As he stated before the fleet’s departure, “I want all failures, blunders and shortcomings to be made apparent in time of peace and not in time of war.” But, more importantly, Roosevelt felt that a successful cruise of this magnitude would provide the American people with an example of U.S. naval preparedness, strength and range. Such an impression, he hoped, would help him get the desired appropriation from Congress for four more battleships. The cruise of the Great White Fleet had many substantial results both diplomatically for the nation and technically for the Navy. On the diplomatic side, the cruise satisfied our country’s desire to be recognized as a world power. It was aptly proven that the United States was capable of projecting its influence anywhere in the world on a heretofore unprecedented scale.

Santa Surprises Shoppers at Food Court From Naples USO

Nearly 300 Naples Area military children, many with parents deployed, received a holiday surprise at the NEX Food Court last Saturday when they were greeted by the USO Naples team, elves, a juggler in stilts, a clown, a magician, and the jolliest man on Earth – Santa Clause – who all gathered to deliver an amazing afternoon filled with laughter, joy and holiday magic. The event, held in collaboration with NEX and the NSA Naples MWR Community Recreation Division, kicked off with the entrance of Santa Clause, who listened to children as they sat on his lap and posed for photos. Military families received a free printed copy of their photos, with a digital version available to download online. Children visited every station and worked with their parents to complete a variety of fun, holiday crafts, play engaging games, receive free cotton candy, candy canes – and of course – cookies, and milk. Each child also received a Naughty or Nice Certificate from the North Pole and proudly mailed their handwritten letter to Santa. Heating Your Home During the Winter From NSA Naples Energy Management Team

We are not bears hibernating therefore we don’t have heavy winter coats, but what we do have are heating systems in our homes and offices. Turning on the heater seems simple, but there is more to it than you might think. Warming up your home uses a noticeable – and expensive – amount of energy. Space heating and cooling can account for almost half of a home’s energy use, making it one of the largest energy expenses in any home, but there are ways to make your heater work less and your home become more efficient in the amount of energy it uses to heat. Suggested thermostat settings are 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit during the day (this is warm enough to be comfortable but not cold). Also, heating units work just as hard and produce less heat if they are not able to breathe due to dirty air filters, so change them regularly (approximately every three months). Remember on your way out the door to shut it off if you are not going to be home. Turn the heater off if you are going on vacation or taking leave. Heating an empty house could cost you money that could be better spent on other things and puts a strain on our environment. And lastly, turn off during nights or set your thermostat between 58 and 62 degrees Fahrenheit. Your body decreases its temperature during the night this will actually help you sleep better and save a bunch on your electric bill, and remember you can always add a heavy blanket to heat yourself for eight hours instead of the whole house. For more information on heating tips and other energy saving ideas visit energy.gov

BOTTLED WATER ADVISORY From NSA Public Affairs

Except for those living at the Support Site and Capodichino, bottled water is recommended. Treated water is provided free of charge at a dispenser located outside the Capodichino east parking garage. All economy leases negotiated through the Housing office have a bottle water clause, which requires the landlord to provide bottled water. Work with landlords to have any water holding tanks disinfected twice a year, and ensure your tap water is disconnected from non-permitted wells and connected only to the city water system.

Secretary of the Navy Releases New Operations Security (OPSEC) Guidance By James Magdalenski Director Naval OPSEC Support Team (NOST) Public Affairs

The Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Ray Mabus just issued ALNAV 072/16 to accompany the Department’s new Operations Security (OPSEC) policy, which was released May 5. The ALNAV is intended to spread the broad-reaching implications of the new policy to the widest possible operational audience and communicated the provisions to personnel outside the traditional information warfare community. For example, Navy units and commands that fail to maintain an effective OPSEC program are automatically disqualified from earning a “Battle E” or other operational awards. Lt. Cmdr. Josh Segal, the department’s program manager, stated “Today we face a whole host of

new threats and we are our own worst enemy. We have very sophisticated adversaries who watch our every move, with the proliferation of smart phones and social media; we need to be significantly more vigilant in what we say and do.” Other significant highlights in the OPSEC policy (SECNAVINST 3070.2) and ALNAV include

specific Commanding Officer responsibilities and accountability requirements for all higher commands to provide oversight of subordinates programs. The new OPSEC policy includes two useful resources: a selfinspection tool and a DON Critical Information List (CIL). The self-inspection tool is intended to facilitate an internal assessment to determine compliance with

Department of Defense (DOD) and Department of the Navy (DON) standards, as well as, provide higher level commands the ability to evaluate the effectiveness of subordinate programs. The DON Critical Information List (CIL) provides an overview of what the SECNAV considers “critical information” across the Department. Each Command is still expected to develop their own CIL based on local and specific operational threats. For more information, visit http://www.navy.mil, www.facebook.com/usnavy, or www.twitter.com/usnavy. For Navy OPSEC information or support, visit the Naval OPSEC Support Team’s page at www.navy.mil/OPSEC or www.facebook.com/NavalOPSEC. WILDCAT WRESTLING

from page 1

Standout newcomer to the team junior Jackson Blivin (145) impressed all with a 3-0 record at the meet, dominating each opponent thoroughly. Teammates senior Jordan Hoffman (152), senior Caleb Hood (160), senior Francesco Mastroianni (170), and junior Nicholas Clarida (195) all boasted undefeated records as well during the first meet.

Adding to these seasoned wrestlers is a large amount of wrestlers who are learning very fast, and are beginning to make their own marks on the mat. The Wildcats were at home this past weekend, hosting Vicenza, Aviano, and Sigonella wrestlers on their own turf for the first time this season. Many are looking forward to the challenges that await them on the mat this weekend. Look for results in an upcoming issue Panorama.

FAREWELL JOHN GLEN

from page 1 Glenn resigned as an astronaut on January 16, 1964. He was promoted to colonel in October 1964 and retired from the Marine Corps on January 1, 1965. Following his retirement he became interested in running for public office. He won election to the Senate for his home state of Ohio in 1974, and served in that position through 1999. In 1998, when he was 77, and still a sitting senator, he flew on the space shuttle orbiter Discovery, which made him the oldest human to venture into space, and the only person to fly in both the Mercury and Space Shuttle programs. Glenn was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on six occasions, and holds the Air Medal with 18 Clusters for his service during World War II and Korea. Glenn also received the Navy Unit Commendation for service in Korea, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Vic-

tory Medal, the China Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Navy’s astronaut Wings, the Marine Corps’ Astronaut Medal, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, and the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. And, in 2012 Glenn received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama. Despite his numerous accomplishments, Glenn will always be remembered as the first American to orbit the Earth during those tentative, challenging, daring days when humans were just beginning to venture beyond the atmosphere that had nurtured them since the species began. Upon hearing the sad news, Obama praised Glenn for his dedication, courage and many decades of service to the nation, both in and out of uniform. “When John Glenn blasted off from Cape Canaveral atop an Atlas rocket in 1962, he lifted the hopes of a nation,” Obama

said following news of Glenn’s passing. “And when his Friendship 7 spacecraft splashed down a few hours later, the first American to orbit the Earth reminded us that with courage and a spirit of discovery there’s no limit to the heights we can reach together. With John’s passing, our nation has lost an icon and Michelle and I have lost a friend. John spent his life breaking barriers, from defending our freedom as a decorated Marine Corps fighter pilot in World War II and Korea, to setting a transcontinental speed record, to becoming, at age 77, the oldest human to touch the stars. John always had the right stuff, inspiring generations of scientists, engineers and astronauts who will take us to Mars and beyond – not just to visit, but to stay. Today, the people of Ohio remember a devoted public servant who represented his fellow Buckeyes in the U.S. Senate for a quarter century and who fought to keep America a leader in science and technology. Our thoughts are with his beloved

DAILY TOURS

What is the Difference Between Solstice and Equinox? From National Aeronautics and Space Administration

It is winter, and the warm summer days are fading into our memory. Each day seems to be getting shorter, darker and colder. Far to the south, across the equator, spring is fading into summer. The days are growing longer, the weather is warmer and flowers are blooming. The reason for these changes has to do with the Earth’s yearly trip around the sun. For part of the year the Earth’s North Pole points away from the sun. Part of the time it points toward it. This is what causes our seasons. When the North Pole points toward the sun, the sun’s rays hit the northern half of the world more directly. That means it is warmer and we have summer. But, when the North Pole is pointed toward the sun, the South Pole is pointed away. So the Earth south of the equator gets less warmth from the sun. It is winter there. Summer is even warmer and winter is colder because of the length of our days and nights. In the summer, daylight lasts longer

and nighttime is shorter. In winter, the days are shorter and the nights longer. That means there is more time for the sun to warm us during long summer days. Short winter days have long, cold nights. The longest day is in the middle of summer, and it is called the summer solstice. North of the equator, depending on where you live, it happens on June 21 or 22. The shortest day is in the middle of winter. This happens around December 21 or 22 north of the equator. It is called the winter solstice, and this year, the winter solstice will occur on Dec. 21. There is a special day in between summer and winter. On this date, day and night are each 12 hours long. This is called the autumnal equinox. It is the first day of fall north of the equator. It is the first day of spring in the southern half of the world. In between winter and summer there is another equinox. It is called the vernal equinox. One day and night are each 12 hours long. This change is the first day of spring north of the equator, and the start of fall in the south.
