The Guinness World Records “World’s Longest Pizza” was created in Naples, where pizza was born. Officially 1.8 kilometers long, the pizza was kneaded and baked in six hours, 11 minutes on the Naples seafront by 250 pizza makers from all over the world using more than 2 tons of Caputo flour, 1.5 tons of tomatoes, 2 tons of mozzarella cheese, 200 liters of oil and 66 pounds of basil. After the recordbreaking pizza was made, it was shared with onlookers and the needy. Photo by MC1 Daniel Barker

Peak PCS Moving Season: Ready, Set, Move! By Sutten Thomas Navy Household Goods Personal Property Program Manager, NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Sigonella

(Part 2 of 3) Setting up the Move By now, most service members know about Defense Personal Property System (DPS). Before you decide to start your upcoming move application in DPS or contact the local PPSO, visit the Navy’s official Portal at http://navsup.navy.mil/household for updated information, customer information videos and articles, regarding shipping entitlements, claims, privately owned vehicles and much more. Provided you’ve done all the leg work upfront, your next step is to visit the www.move.mil to set up your DPS account in order to create and submit your move application. Although “self-counseling” is highly encouraged, you must contact the personal property shipping office if you’ve submitted a self-counseled application and received no response from a household goods counselor. Although an application

was submitted, it is not complete until you’ve signed the application forms and returned them to the servicing PPSO. Too many times, service members claim they submitted their application and thought they had an arranged move set up only to find out their plans have to change because the application was not finalized and the moving dates they wanted are no longer available. Counseling is by far the most important part of a successful move. Customers must ensure they have all the information they need. Carefully read all DPS application instructions do not just skip screen pages without fully understanding the information or following the instructions. Having

valid and updated contact information (phone numbers, e-mail, etc.) in DPS is the key to a service member’s successful move. Customers should arrange early, remain flexible with their pack out or pick up dates, and try to schedule before or after the peak of the peak season whenever possible. Initial pack out or pick up dates are your “desired” pack or pick up and are not confirmed until official orders are turned into the PPSO and the moving company contacts the service member to finalize the pack and pick up dates, conduct the pre-move survey and establish the Required Delivery Date (RDD). DPS will generate a Desired Delivery Date MOVING Page 7 CAPTAIN’S CORNER. . . . . . . . . 2

The Centers for Disease Control reports that drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death for children ages 1-14. To help stop this trend, Navy Fitness is launching its first Drowning Prevention Campaign: SPLASH. Through SPLASH, we strive to educate parents and youth on the importance of pool safety and dangers associated with unsupervised swimming. In conjunction with this campaign, all children under the age of 17 who wish to use the deep end areas, slide and diving board, must take and pass a mandatory swim test. Children ages 10 and 16, if left unattended at the pool, must demonstrate the ability to pass the Navy Youth Swim Test. The Navy Youth Swim Test consists of swimming 25 meters of a recognizable stroke (front crawl or breast-stroke, no underwater swimming or swimming on back); treading water for one minute; and a deep water entry, recovery to surface, and unassisted exit. “We realize that this means a lot of our community kids must now take a swim test, whereas they were not required to in years past,” MWR Aquatics Director Deborah Moors said. “However, to make things easier, MWR has scheduled swim testing dates to help get everyone the chance to take the Navy Youth Swim Test prior to the Support Site pool seasonal opening.” The initial swim test dates are May 26 and 27, from 3 to 6 p.m., at the Support Site pool. Additional testing dates will be available in June, prior to pool daily operations beginning and during pool weekend operations during adult swim breaks.

CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Doug Carpenter NSA Naples Commanding Officer

This week there are a lot of events with global impact in Naples as we roll into the summer festivals and celebrations of local culture, cuisine and art. One of the most notable of these events was the recent attempt by a team of Neopolitan pizza chefs hoping to break the record for largest pizza ever made. If you missed out on that event, there are still a wide range of opportunities throughout the summer starting with a wine tasting event at Castel dell’Ovo this weekend. Next week is Memorial Day weekend and many of our community members will be taking advantage of the time off to travel around Italy and Europe, exploring bucket list cities, and expanding their cultural vocabulary. I would like to remind everyone that the Memorial Day holiday is given as a time to remember those that have fallen defending the United States of America. Their sacrifice allowed our nation to achieve the high ideals of freedom, and become a motivating force for a freer and more stable world. Since 1776, patriots have fought to defend “certain unalienable rights” – Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. We honor their memory by standing their watch, continuing the necessary tradition of defending our citizens, borders and allies. Each active duty member swears an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, and on Memorial Day we remember those that have given everything in the fulfillment of that oath. Please maintain heightened situational awareness over the coming weekend. Considering current events, it is no surprise that security levels remain high across the region. Before you depart on your Memorial Day weekend getaway be sure that your most recent contact information is updated in your command’s recall roster, and that your NFAAS documents reflect accurate information. Before travelling, be sure to sign up for AtHoc alerts and messages – it’s a requirement for all active duty personnel and civilian sponsors. While travelling, stay informed by at least skimming the headlines daily and checking the NSA Facebook page. Check with your chain of command to ensure your travel destination is not off limits or restricted, and please check the state department website to get a general idea for travel alerts in the region. My aim is to ensure we maximize awareness of our security environment, and give everyone the information needed to make good decisions. The Support Site is looking good, thanks to everyone for helping to keep a clean environment. Stay safe, plan ahead, and have a great weekend!

NAVY HISTORY: Armed Forces Day From DoD News

Armed Forces Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May. Armed Forces Week begins on the second Saturday of May and ends on the third Sunday of May. Because of their unique training schedules, National Guard and Reserve units may celebrate Armed Forces Day/Week over any period in May. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the recent unification of the Armed Forces under one department – the Department of Defense. Each of the military leagues and/or orders was asked to drop their sponsorship of a respective service-specific day to celebrate the newly announced Armed Forces Day. The Army, Navy and Air Force leagues adopted the newly formed day. The Marine Corps League declined to drop support for Marine Corps Day but it also stepped up to support Armed Forces Day, too. In a speech announcing the formation of the new holiday, the 33rd president of the United States, President Harry S. Truman praised the work of the military services at home and across the seas. “It is vital to the security of the nation and to the establishment of a desirable peace,” he said. Truman’s presidential proclamation of February 27, 1950, which officially announced the new holiday to the American public: “Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950, marks the first combined demonstration by America’s defense team of its progress, under the National Security Act, towards the goal of readiness for any eventuality. It is the first pa-

rade of preparedness by the unified forces of our land, sea, and air defense.” The theme of that first Armed Forces Day was “Teamed for Defense.” That theme was chosen as a means of expressing the unification of all the military forces under a single department of the government. There were several other reasons for holding Armed Forces Day. It was a type of “educational program for civilians,” one in which there would be an increased awareness of the Armed Forces, which was designed to expand public understanding of what type of job is performed and the role of the military in civilian life. A May 17, 1952, New York Times editorial supporting Armed Forces Day reminded their readers that American Troops were fighting on the front lines in Korea: “This is the day on which we have the welcome opportunity to pay special tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces ... to all the individuals who are in the service of their country all over the world. Armed Forces Day won’t be a matter of parades and receptions for a good many of them. They will all be in line of duty and some of them may give their lives in that duty.” The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated by parades, open houses, receptions and air shows. Ten-thousand troops from all branches of the military, cadets and veterans marched in Washington, D.C. In Berlin, 1,000 U.S. troops paraded for the German citizens at Templehof Airfield, and in New York City, an estimated 33,000 participants participated in Armed Forces Day “under an air cover of 250 military planes of all types.” Across the country, the American people joined together to honor the Armed Forces. After completing the Navy Youth Swim Test, swimmers will be given a wristband to signify their swimming ability while at the pool, and will also be issued a new Navy Youth Swim License, which is valid for all Navy swimming pools worldwide. The swim test is valid for one year and will need to be reassessed every year. For youth who cannot pass the swim test right away, retesting is available; however, swimmers will only be allowed to test once per day. Women’s Guidelines for Preventive Health Screenings By Cmdr. Carolyn Currie U.S. Naval Hospital Naples

In May, we celebrate National Women’s Health Week. What better time to remind women of what they should be doing to take great care of themselves. In addition to engaging in regular exercise, healthy eating, and getting enough rest, you should also be up-to-date with preventive health screenings. However, just as healthy lifestyles can be challenging at times, so can navigating the guidelines for a health screening. At times, even the experts disagree on when and how screening should be done, but they all agree that routine screening plays a vital part in promoting optimal health and wellness. So how do you know what is right for you? The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) is an independent, volunteer panel of national experts in prevention and evidence-based medicine. Their objective is to improve the health of all Americans by providing guidelines about clinical preventive services such as screenings, counseling services, and preventive medications. The recommended screenings listed below are from the USPSTF. Please keep in mind that these are only recommendations. You should discuss your medical and family history with your Primary Care Manager (PCM) to determine what screening is right for you. Blood Pressure: At least every two years if you have normal blood pressure (lower than 120/80); once every year if you have blood pressure between 120/80 and 139/89; and discuss treatment with your healthcare provider if your blood pressure is 140/90 or higher. Bone Mineral Density Test: at least once at age

65 or older. Cholesterol Test: If you are at increased risk for heart disease, start testing regularly at age 20 Diabetes Screening: Get screened if your blood pressure is higher than 135/80; or you take medicine for high blood pressure. Breast Cancer Screening: 50-75 years old mammogram every two years. Cervical Cancer Screening: 12-30 years old, Pap test every three years; or 30-65 years old, Pap test with human papilloma virus (HPV) every 5 years. Colorectal Cancer Screening: Starting at age 50, you may be screened in one of three different ways; Fecal Occult Blood Testing, Sigmoidoscopy or Colonoscopy Chlamydia Test: Every year for sexually active women through age 24; over 24 and sexually active, and at increased risk (nonmonogamous relationship); or if you are pregnant Syphilis Test: Get tested if you are at increased risk; or if you are pregnant. Gonorrhea Test: Get tested if you are sexually active and at increased risk; or if you are pregnant. ENERGY CONSERVATION DOD Consumes More Than Five Billion Gallons of Petroleum Annually From NSA Naples Energy Management Team

The Department of Defense, one of the world’s largest institutional consumers of oil, consumes approximately five billion gallons of petroleum each year, spending on average $15 billion per year. In fact, fuel prices added an extra $5 billion over what was already budgeted over the last two years, according to the Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus. DoD fuel expenditure: $15 billion (budgeted price of fuel) + $5 billion (volatile fuel price spikes) $20 billion (total annual fuel cost) Global oil prices are truly volatile, and we are not exempt. The Navy, while consuming 22 percent of DoD’s total fuel, spends approximately $4 billion to $5 billion a year on fuel to power its daily operations, both ashore and afloat. We are financially burdened by unpredictable changes in oil pricing. In fact, every $1 rise in a barrel of oil costs the Navy and Marine Corps an extra $30 million. Why should I care? These prices directly impact the Navy’s operational readiness and combat capability. According to Mabus, resources that should be spent on training the warfighter are being spent on “instability surcharges” caused by the fluctuating global fuel market. “That means our military flies less, steams less, and trains less,” Mabus said. “If the bill gets too big, we buy fewer ships, we buy fewer aircraft,” which directly impacts our military effectiveness. “We’ve got to power those ships and we need a stably priced, American-produced form of power.” The Department of the Navy, in a joint effort with the DoD, is taking action to reduce oil dependency by increasing the use of efficient, clean energy technologies, alternative and renewable energy sources, and implementing energy conservation practices fleet-wide.

MOVING from page 1 (DDD) during self-counseling, or the PPSO will inform the member of the DDD on the shipment application during counseling. Remember, in each case the DDD is only an estimate and the “actual” RDD will be printed on the government bill of lading (BOL) for the shipment. If, during the pre-move survey, the service member and the TSP or Local Agent negotiates a different DDD, that new date becomes the RDD. The service member should inform PPSO of any date changes or renegotiated RDD. The moving company will provide the member with a copy of the final bill of lading (BOL), reflecting the correct RDD, either electronically or hardcopy, no later than the pickup date. If any information on the BOL is incorrect, notify the servicing PPSO. Weight allowances are determined by the member’s grade in accordance with the Joint Travel Regulation. Ultimately, members are responsible for keeping personal property items within their weight allowances. To avoid possible excess costs, take the time early in advance of the move date to estimate your shipment weight. Dispose of personal things you no longer use to reduce your potential excess costs. Should you decide to keep all your household goods and possibly ship above your weight al-

lowance, you will be subject to pay any excess cost. Estimating your household goods is fairly easy. Start with the net weights of all shipments from your last move. Normally your shipment documents from the previous move will indicate the total weight shipped to your current duty station. Be sure to include all shipments at government expense still in storage, locally or elsewhere, if applicable, as well as weights for any personally procured moves (formally DITY moves). Add weights for all household items you acquired during your current tour, such as furniture, hobby equipment, tools, books, collectables and electronics. To conduct an estimate, use the “1,000-pounds-perroom” formula. Unfortunately, families often forget to include rooms such as storage sheds, large closets, yards, garages, carports, basements, and other hidden areas. This is why it’s best to start your move estimates with all weights from your last move, and then adjust for what you recently acquired. Remember, an estimate is simply that your “best guess” estimate of what you intend to ship. Your estimate is not an official weight until the movers provide an official certified shipment weight to the PPSO and a Government Bill of Lading is created. If your weights are close to authorized maximum after pack out, request an official reweigh through your DPS account, servicing origin or destination PPSO. NEXT WEEK: Part three of “Ready, Set, Move!”

Naples Area Events Celebrate Wine Traditions Italy is the world’s top wine producer, and Campania, which is home to Naples, is famous for the quality of its grapes and local wines. Both USO and Tickets and Travel offer tours of local wineries. Photos by MC1 Daniel Barker

By MC1 Daniel Barker NSA Public Affairs

Grapes for winemaking have been grown in the volcanic soil in the areas surrounding Mt. Vesuvius and Naples, Italy for several thousand years, dating back

to the Greek and Roman time periods. In modern times Italy continues this history, including becoming the world’s top wine producer in 2013. In the next couple weeks organizations and wineries around the Naples area have events

planned to learn about and celebrate this ancient tradition. Naples is the capital city of the Campania region, or as the Romans called it, Campania felix, a phrase which means “fertile countryside.” This area is fa-

mous for the quality of the grapes grown here, including several different varieties, some of which are specific to this region. Aglianico grapes are used in some of the most famous red wines including Taurasi and Aglianico del Taburno.

Aglianico grapes were introduced to the area by the Greeks in Cumae (Cuma), the first Greek colony on the mainland of Italy, near Pozzuoli. These grapes were then later also grown by the Romans. The vineyards of the region also include white-wine varieties such as Fiano and Greco, which are used in wines such as Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo. Falanghina and Piedirosso are also some of the more famous local wines names to look for. Lacryma Christi Del Vesuvio, (literally “tears of Christ”), is the name of a celebrated Neapolitan wine produced on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius and is considered to be one of the closest to the wine consumed by ancient Romans. Community Recreation Tickets and Travel Office (formerly known as ITT) both offer tours of wineries in the region. Upcoming tours include wine tastings in Benevento (May 21), Avellino (May 28), and also in San Gimignano and Chianti (June 18-19). The city of Naples is participating by showcasing wine and street food along the Lungomare Caracciolo May 20-22 in an event called Vinopoli. Wines from many Italian companies will be available to sample and purchase. To participate in tastings within the Vinopoli event, visitors will need to purchase coupons that replace euros at info points before hand. It won’t be possible to buy wine directly with euros. Vinopoli is scheduled to start at noon and lasts through midnight. Admission is free. On the last Sunday in May, wineries throughout Italy will open their doors to the public. Cantine Aperte, or “Open Cellars, began 24 years ago and has since grown into a major event. More than 800 wineries participated last year

and welcomed more than one million visitors into their cellars. Cantine Aperte was founded by wineries in the Wine Tourism Movement in Italy to facilitate interaction between vintners and consumers and enable

wine lovers to connect with the origins of their favorites. The 2016 event will take place on May 29. For a schedule of open wineries and tour packages visit the Movimento Turismo di Vino website.

There Are More Great Events Going On Than You May Realize By Chris Kasparek NSA Community Recreation Director

It has been a few months since I took over the reins of MWR’s Community Recreation Division and one thing still eludes me: What’s the best way of reaching each member of our community? Frequently, as I walk the halls at Capo or the aisles at the NEX or Commissary, or while enjoying my favorite beverage at the Bowling Center, people tell me, “I didn’t know about this” or “I didn’t know about that” or “This place is so boring, there is never anything to do.” I must admit, at being astonished when I hear that, and I often respond with, “What? Are you kidding me?” Since January we have had the following entertainers and events at our installation: Maddie and Tae, Brett Eldredge, The Frontmen, SeaGals, MessLords, Brian Miller, Craig Karges,

Touch the Sound, Easter Eggstravaganza and Take Back the Night. Plus, we’ve had numerous Ticket and Travel Tours, Outdoor Recreation Tours and MWR events. So I am here this week to remind all of you where to find the information: The Panorama, The MWR Facebook page, The Volcano, or by calling our various offices around Capo and SS, or simply by asking your colleagues and friends. For example, last Friday night we held our second Cornhole Tournament at Carney Park. Twentytwo teams entered and we crowned a champion, and – best of all – it was completely free, and it was amazing. So folks, the next time you have an itch to say there is nothing to do, open the paper, click your computer mouse, or chat up a friend, because the events are ongoing, fun and accessible; you just have to look around. You’ll be glad you did. For details on all of our great events and programs call DSN 629-7911.
