Naples Tiger Sharks Win Big in Sigonella

Teams from across the European Forces Swim League (EFSL) converged to Sigonella October 7 and 8 for a “Double Dip” event which consisted of a Pentathlon and a Standard meet. Saturday morning kicked off the Pentathlon, which requires swimmers to com-

plete all four competitive strokes (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Freestyle), plus an Individual Medley. For new swimmers, and seasoned swimmers alike, this can be a stressful swim meet, as a single disqualification will wash away any chance they have had to make it to the podium. This concern was voiced by

Corrine Millis (15), co-captain for the Naples Tiger Sharks and 5th place finisher in her age group (Girls 15-16). “Some swimmers were worried that they’d be DQ’d because they couldn’t’ see the backstroke flags,” Millis said. “The flags had been blown around due to high winds … I myself didn’t have an issue, but can see

why some would have.” In total 12 swimmers would be “DQ’d” or disqualified during their backstroke event. Even with the meet under the official’s ever watchful presence, the Naples Tiger Sharks still did extremely well with 26 swimmers stepping onto the podium at the conclusion of the day. Vaccinate Now to Protect Yourself Against Influenza By Lt. Cmdr. Andrew MacGregor U.S. Naval Hospital Naples

It is that time of year again for influenza vaccines! Influenza, or “flu,” is a contagious respiratory illness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu was associated with between 3,000 and 49,000 deaths per year between 1976 and 2006, and even milder cases of flu have the potential to adversely impact Navy force readiness and mission execution. The vaccine will help protect against the influenza viruses that research indi-

cates will be most common during the season. This includes the influenza A (H1N1) virus, the influenza A (H3N2) virus, and one or two influenza B viruses, depending on the flu vaccine. People with the virus can spread it to others up to six feet away. Most experts think flu viruses are spread mainly by droplets made when people with the cough, sneeze or talk. Less often, a person might also get the flu by touching a surface or object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth or nose. The flu is contagious. Some people can be infected with the flu virus, but have no symptoms. During this time, those persons may still spread the virus to others. FLU VACCINE

National Domestic Violence Awareness Month From Commander, Navy Installations Command

National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) is an annual observance that generates awareness of domestic violence as a serious public health issue and the resources available to help prevent and address it. The Family Advocacy Program (FAP) is a Department of Defense (DoD) program that provides domestic and child abuse-prevention efforts, early identification and intervention support for victims and treatment for offenders. Helping couples develop healthy relationship skills is a key violence prevention strategy for the Family Advocacy Program. Additionally, promotional activities will emphasize the impact of exposure to domestic violence on children and adolescents and the generational continuation of familial maltreatment if not addressed. Finally, the observance will feature tools and military and civilian resources available to support and empower victims. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE MONTH Page 7

CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Todd Abrahamson NSA Naples Commanding Officer

Carney Park was a perfect location for a football game last Saturday. It was great to be a part of this year’s homecoming event, I got to throw the first football, kick the first soccer ball, and even crowned the homecoming King and Queen. The Naples Wildcats beat the visiting Tigers from Hohenfels, Germany. Now if they can just win against Aviano they will qualify for the playoffs in Germany. I’d really like to thank all the volunteers who helped make the event a success! Remember to keep a look out for ways to optimize your energy use. This month is specifically recognized as Energy Action Month and the Department of the Navy’s theme for this year is “Energy Action = Mission Success,” a recognition of the critical role that energy plays in our ability to execute our mission requirements. Energy Action Month is the perfect time to recognize the role individuals can play in reducing energy waste. Information about energy conservation, tips and hints can be found in the Energy Corner of the Panorama or online. Remember to unplug and turn off unused electronics and lights so that you can be an energy saver in your workspace today! October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) would like to remind everyone to “Be the Change. Prevent Domestic Violence.” In the United States domestic violence is still the leading cause of injury to women and we share a moral obligation to recognize, address, and stop domestic violence. Resources include Military OneSource and the National Domestic Violence Hotline in addition to FFSC. As always, thanks for reading the Panorama, the #1 newspaper in the Navy according to the Navy’s 2016 Russell Egnor Media Awards! ITALIAN NEWS BRIEFS COMPILED BY TERESA MEROLA NSA NAPLES PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Pompeii Hosting Chocolate Days This Weekend The city of Pompeii will host Chocolate Days this weekend. The Artisan chocolate festival will be held in Piazza Immacolata with many stands full of various chocolate specialties where visitors can be involved in the various stages of chocolate processing. The event runs from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. Meanwhile, the city of Naples will host street food from all over Europe in Piazza Dante this weekend. Stands from more than 16 European countries will display their typical food products and handicrafts. The food market will open at 10 a.m. and stay open until late at night. Hope for Italian Migraine Sufferers More than 200,000 Italians suffer of migraines, according to the Italian Society of Neurology, but now thanks to Italian researchers there is a way to avoid their migraines. The injection of an anti-body which acts against the CGRP molecule will change the lives of these migraine sufferers. The first two test phases showed 70 percent positive results, researchers said. The third and final stage will be conducted by the Luigi Vanvitelli University of Naples. Young Italian Emigrants Rising Dramatically Over the past 10 years, the number of Italians emigrating from Italy increased by 60 percent, according to a migrant association report. Those leaving the country were aged between 18 and 34. The region with the most departures by far was Lombardy, where last year 20,389 inhabitants decided to leave. It was followed by Sicily, Veneto and Lazio, which each saw around 9,00010,000 departures. Nearly 5 million Italians were registered as living abroad as of January 1, 2017. Most Italian emigrants resettled in other European countries, fol-

lowed by the Americas. The United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland and France were among the most popular destinations, though the United Arab Emirates are also attracting more and more Italian expats. Study Aims to Discover Why Southern Italians Have Long Lifespans A group of Swedish residents of the city of Malmo are taken part in a study which aims to find out why people who live in southern Italy live longer than southern Sweden. 200 residents of the city of Malmo will live with their host families in the Cilento region, in southern part of the province of Salerno. The Cilento region, which is 150 kilometers south of Naples, is one of several so-called ‘Blue zones,’ or places across the world where the locals have a significantly longer lifespan than average. The Swedish people are making the move as part of a study by Swedish researcher Olle Melander, who hopes to shed light on just why the southern Italians live so long – and whether it’s possible for Swedes to replicate their healthy habits. Women living in the Cilento region have an average life expectancy of 92 years and men 85, significantly higher than the Italian average of 84 and 79 respectively in Italy. Their secret to longevity has long fascinated scientists, who have put forward explanations ranging from rural Italy’s tight-knit communities, to the fresh fish in their diets or the vast quantities of olive oil used in their cooking. Participants in the research will live with host families who will show them how to live – and eat – like locals during the three months. The exchange will be the third and final part of study, the first part of which has just got under way. To begin with, researchers are comparing diets and other lifestyle factors of 1,000 people from each of the regions, as well as analyzing their intestinal bacteria and their blood. In the study’s second phase, these results will be compared with those from tests carried out in the 1990s.

HISTORY: MARINES RECAPTURE HARPERS FERRY

Abolitionist John Brown From NSA Public Affairs

On the night of October 16, 1859, abolitionist John Brown and a band of 21 men raided an Army Armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, with the purpose of sparking a slave revolt. Brown hoped the local

slave population would join him, and that weapons seized from the armory would be supplied to slaves and freedom fighters throughout the country. Brown’s raiders easily overpowered the night watchman and they captured the arsenal, taking 40 hostages, which were held in the armory’s heavily-fortified engine house. When workers arrived the next morning, they learned the armory had been seized. They quickly spread the alarm, and within hours the armory was surrounded by local militia, which exchanged ineffective gunfire with Brown’s raiders. Learning of the situation that same morning, Secretary of War John B. Floyd ordered 86 Marines from the Marine Barracks at 8th and “I” in Washington, D.C., to depart immediately by train for Harpers Ferry. Their orders were simple: Capture Brown and save

the hostages. Under the command of Army Col. Robert E. Lee and led by Marine Lt. Israel Green, the Marines arrived at the armory later that afternoon. At dawn on October 18, Lee´s aid, Army Lt. J.E.B. Stuart, offered to accept Brown´s surrender. Brown refused the offer. The Marines attacked the engine house, defeating the raiders and capturing Brown. One Marine, Private Luke Quinn, lost his life in the raid. Severely wounded, but surviving the attack, Brown was captured. He was tried and sentenced to death in a weeklong trial for murder, inciting insurrection and treason against the State of Virginia. His sentence was perceived by many as an act of martyrdom, which further polarized the nation. Brown was hanged on December 2, 1859.

SPOTLIGHT: ALEENA JOHNSON USO Naples has hosted two unique programs for our NSA Naples Community in recent months: Our End of Summer Water Play and Mother & Son Superhero Bash. Both events provided unique, engaging activities, and drew hundreds of military kids of all ages. Both events were the brainchildren of one volunteer: Aleena Johnson. From the time she joined the team in January, Johnson’s positive attitude, genuine enthusiasm, and fierce dedication, have provided a spirited dynamic to every event she supports. Her eagerness to take ownership of her role as a volunteer and initiative in the implementation and execution of two wholly unique programs is why we are proud to announce Johnson as USO Naples’ Volunteer of the Month for September 2017. Johnson says that there was never a particular person or event that inspired her volunteerism. Her motivation, she says, stemmed from an innate need to serve. “I have always admired the USO for what it does and what it means to our servicemen and women, so when the opportunity to become a part of the organization presented itself, I quickly jumped at it,” Johnson said. “Now, after almost 10 months as a volunteer, I can say that I love the program even more. There are several small parts that make this organization function as a whole; I see that now and my respect has grown tenfold.” For Johnson, being able to contribute her creative ideas and see them come to life, and the lifelong friends she has made along the way are her favorite aspects to volunteering. The most rewarding aspect, however, is in the impact she knows she is making within the military community. “Bringing other people happiness … is the best feeling in the world,” she said. “I absolutely recommend that people volunteer with the USO. I am head over heels in love with the USO Naples staff and the friends that I have made while giving back to this wonderfully amazing community.”

ENERGY CONSERVATION

Fuel for the Fleet – August 2017 From NSA Naples Energy Management Team

In May 2017 Navy Region Europe Launched a yearlong competition between the installations in our region. Each base has a target energy reduction of 2.5 percent per year and for some of us that seems like a reasonable number but when we are spending $13 million a year on power at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples even a reduction of 2.5 percent is a big number. Energy efficiency is critical to ensuring the viability of the Navy’s operation worldwide so if you see a light left on turn it off or if you see unused electronics using power unplug it, and together we can conserve energy.

SOUND OFF: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SCARY MOVIE?

Lt. j.g. Anthony Giancana “I’m not a big scary movie fan. A lot of them are cheesy.”

Lt. Caleb Demarco “‘The Conjuring.’ I like supernatural type horror movies!”

TIGER SHARKS From page 1 Early Sunday morning, with swimmers battling fatigue from the day’s prior five event meet, and the warmer than normal pool waters (which tend to make swimmers feel sluggish, and ill in longer distance swims), they still were able to surge ahead, with the 10 and under “A” relay team (Nate Schmaeling, Rhiannon Myhre, Caleb Schmaeling and Mia Ramirez) leading off the block to clinch first place in the 200 medley relay. With Naples winning first place in three of four relays, the tone was set, and continued during numerous individual events as Tiger Sharks swimmers continued to hit the wall first. In some cases a hundredth of a second separated swimmers, as was the case for Rhiannon Myhre (10) who touched ahead of a Sigonella swimmer in the Girls 12 and Under 50 meter breaststroke with less than a second separating them. While swimmers were competing, parents Nadine Smith-Barksdale, whose daughter Mikayla is swimming her first year with the Naples Tiger Sharks were amazed at the energy and enthusiasm her daughter displayed during the meet. “The camaraderie and excitement were amazing,” Smith-Barksdale said. “Mikayla is new to the team and she was being cheered for as though she was a veteran swimmer – such positive energy!” At the conclusion of the “Double Dip” meet weekend, the Tiger Sharks headed

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE MONTH From page 1 The Navy’s 2017 DVAM theme is “Be the Change. Prevent Domestic Violence” with a call to support the domestic violence awareness purple ribbon campaign by wearing purple (ribbons, clothing, nail polish) on each Thursday throughout October and posting a picture to social media using the hashtag #PURPLETHURSDAY. We hope to spark interest in learning the warning signs of domestic violence, were to find help, and how to build healthy relationships. Almost every year there are homicide or suicide deaths related to family maltreatment. We lose service members, family members, intimate partners and children. This is why it is so important for active intervention by all Navy community members and leadership. Know what the warning signs are and where to seek assistance. Education and Training Sailors are required to complete annual training on the dynamics of domestic violence and can do so through in-person trainings from FFSC or the Domestic Violence Prevention mobile application – https://www.cnic.navy.mil/ffr/family_readiness/fleet_and_family_support_program/family_advocacy/resources_and_links.html CNIC and FFSC professionals provide domestic violence prevention training, High Risk of Violence-Coordinated Community Response training, mandated reporting training and Incident Determination Committee training annually to the Leadership Triad, coordinated community response members and childcare providers. FFSC also provide

classes in parenting, conflict resolution, couples communication, and financial management. Victims of Abuse We encourage victims to reach out to their local installation’s FFSC Family Advocacy Program Victim Advocate or clinician to receive information on services provided and reporting options. All victims can receive medical treatment from a military provider and disclose abuse to receive confidential support and collaboration with a victim advocate. Signs of Domestic Violence There are many signs of domestic violence such as isolating a person from friends, family or support; physical injury; public humiliation; threats to harm; fear or low self-confidence; extreme control of finances or documentation; stalking behaviors (to include cyber bullying or stalking); and monitoring whereabouts. The NDV Hotline and the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project – http://www.thehotline.org/is-this-abuse/abusedefined/ – describe the most accurate explanation of what occurs in an abusive relationship. PANORAMA October 20, 2017

FLU VACCINE From page 1 Vaccination is the best way to reduce your risk of contracting influenza and is now recommended for everyone. Vaccination is the first line of prevention towards ensuring a happy and healthy family. Although not required for the public, it is highly recommended to reduce your risk of contracting the Influenza virus. In order to keep us mission ready and protect the public’s health, flu vaccine is mandatory for all military personnel (Active Duty and Reserves), as well as civilian health care workers providing direct patient care, mission-essential DoD civilians, and CDC staff (unless you are medically or administratively exempt). Be sure to maintain a copy of all records because the documentation will act as your “receipt” for having received either the vaccine or the exemption. If we do not have a record of your vaccination and your name appears on a delinquency list, you will need to either show your receipt or receive the vaccine again. Some groups in our community are at higher risk for complications from an influenza infection. If you are in one of the groups below, we strongly encourage you to get a flu vaccine as soon as possible: ● Pregnant women ● Individuals living with or caring for infants less than two years old ● Children younger than five, especially under the age of two ● People 65 years and older ● Anyone with one of the following medical conditions: Chronic lung disease such as asthma or emphysema, heart disease, chronic kidney or liver disease, a cognitive or neuromuscular disorder, a metabolic disease (including diabetes) or immunosuppression (caused by medications or by another medical condition). U.S. Naval Hospital Naples has one form of

11

the influenza vaccine for the general population. The one form of vaccine is an inactivated vaccine given by intramuscular injection. It is important to note that the viruses in the vaccine are versions of the virus that cannot replicate. You cannot get the flu from them. Side effects from the vaccine could include runny nose, headache, sore throat and cough. The influenza season officially starts in October. Active duty, first responders, essential civilian personnel and those at high risk from complications of the flu will be the first to receive the vaccine. Talk to your healthcare provider if you have any questions regarding the flu vaccine for you and your family. Remember, flu vaccination does not protect you from the common cold. Use these best practices to protect our community and keep everyone healthy! 1. Avoid close contact. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too. 2. Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness. 3. Cover your mouth and nose. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or lean into your elbow when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick. 4. Clean your hands. Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. 5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth. 6. Practice other good health habits. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

Why Americans Prefer Coffee to Tea From NSA Public Affairs

Have you ever wondered why Americans – in general – prefer coffee, when the early British colonists were primarily tea drinkers? In the early 1770s, England’s King George III was facing grave money problems. He decided that taxing the colonists would be a convenient way of raising funds to help pay for the French and Indian War. He also thought it would be an easy way to exert more control over the increasingly independent and troublesome colonists. Many colonists felt that they should not pay these taxes, because they were passed in England by parliament, and not by their own colonial governments. They protested, saying that these taxes violated their rights as British citizens. The colonists started to resist by boycotting, or not buying, British goods, like tea. On the evening of December 16, 1773, a group of colonial revolutionaries calling themselves “Sons of Liberty” and disguised as Mohawk Indians boarded three British ships – the Beaver, the Eleanor and the Dartmouth – and dumped 45 tons of tea into Boston Harbor to protest the new taxes.

The British took action by closing the Boston port and enacting stricter laws and taxes. The First Continental Congress met in 1774 to make a list of complaints about the way Britain was treating the colonies. Many people in America felt their concerns were not being heard, and this caused more unhappiness in the colonies, which eventually led to the American Revolutionary War with Britain, and forever after, coffee – not tea – became the preferred drink of the citizens of the newly formed United States of America.
