Naples Community Theatre’s ‘A Christmas Carol’ Shines Brightly From Naples Community Theatre

The Naples Community Theatre production of “A Christmas Carol” closed after a highly successful run at the Naples American Middle High School last Saturday evening. Director Mark Reid, Stage Manager Erinn Sudol, and the shows’ 30 talented performers brought the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge to life, and brought a touch of Christmas cheer to the community. Highlights included the performance of Jim Farmer as Scrooge, skillfully displaying Scrooge’s mercurial personality from a dark and dismal miser to being a gleeful member of his community. “Scrooge represents a collection of primal fears in all of us: fear of being poor, hungry, and alone,” Farmer said. “His reclamation is the story of salvation, not of the individual, but of the community to which he belongs. In transiting through Scrooge’s dark side, the audience sees the cold and unfeeling miser not as a villain, but as someone to be pitied and reclaimed. As the three ghosts pull Scrooge through his past,

man. In her soaring rendition at the opening of the second act, Berryman’s operatic talent was on full display as she effortlessly scaled the challenges of “Oh, Holy Night.” “The song represents the birth of the savior, and the rebirth of all humanity,” Berryman explained. CHRISTMAS CAROL Page 6

Taxpayer Confidence The audit is massive. It will examine every aspect of the department from personnel to real property to weapons to supplies to bases. Some 2,400 auditors will fan out across the department to conduct it, Pentagon officials said. “It is important that the Congress and the American people have confidence in DoD’s management of every taxpayer dollar,” Norquist said. Audits are necessary to ensure the accuracy of financial information. They also account for property. Officials estimate the department has around $2.4 trillion in assets.

CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Todd Abrahamson NSA Naples Commanding Officer

I am going to understandably start this week’s column off not by talking about last weekend’s big sporting event, but rather the grand opening of the Spinz location here Friday. I was lucky enough to help our MWR team cut the inaugural ribbon at the new eatery, which offers a little taste of home with options like Starbucks coffee and gourmet burgers. The location here on Support Site is the first OCONUS Spinz to open, and hopefully will turn out to be the best worldwide. There was a huge turnout and a lot of great feedback from the crowd this weekend. Please keep that coming and remember, the money our local MWR team makes from things like this goes directly to recreational programs and projects that serve you and our NSA Naples community as a whole. I also want to take a minute to talk about some great work being done out in the local community by our personnel. Community relations in the local economy and team building projects with our Italian military counterparts, though not always very visible, are great ways that we strengthen the bonds of partnership with our host nation. This past weekend a delegation of Sailors attended Catholic mass at a local parish near Capodichino. Although not all the attending Sailors were Catholic, they got to share a very meaningful cultural experience with members of the local Italian community. We also conducted a community relations project yesterday involving the Naples area Boy Scouts, U.S. Sailors from numerous commands in the area, and Italian Air Force personnel. Participants collected, wrapped, and delivered gifts to children at the Santobono children’s hospital in Naples. I can’t begin to explain the tremendous importance of service projects like this. Thank you to all involved for representing our base, our Navy, and our country so well. I’d finally like to mention safety once again this holiday season. By now, everyone should have their leave requests in, their anti-terrorism and safe traveler plans completed, and hopefully transportation mapped out for any trips they are taking. Whether you’re travelling or staying in the area, please remember to have a plan, don’t drink and drive, and make sure you’re taking precautions to safeguard your homes from fire and/or intrusion. As always, there will be NSA Naples team members ready to help if you find yourself in an emergency. Our emergency line is 081-568-4911 and our non-emergency line is 081-568-5638. Please also remember to use your chains of command, friends and family, or our Tipsy Taxi program as resources. Let’s make sure everyone enjoys the holidays safely and comes back in January ready to support the mission at hand and do the basics right. As always, thanks for reading the Panorama, the #1 newspaper in the Navy according to the Navy’s 2016 Russell Egnor Media Awards! ITALIAN NEWS BRIEFS COMPILED BY TERESA MEROLA NSA NAPLES PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Visitors to Pay to Visit Pantheon; Fee to Help Safeguard Famous Monument Visitors will soon begin paying two euros to visit the Pantheon. One of central Rome’s most spectacular monuments, the Pantheon was built more than 2,000 years ago under the orders of Emperor Hadrian. Visitors will start paying the entry fee on May 2, according to an accord signed Monday by the culture ministry and the Vicariate of Rome. More than seven million people visit the monument each year and the entry fee will be used to better valorize and safeguard it. Entry fee will be only for those attending religious services in this ancient temple, which is now a church. One of the building’s most intriguing features is the oculus, a 30foot opening built into the dome which illuminates the entrance with a beam of natural light. The building contains the tombs of Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of united Italy and his successor, Umberto I. It also contains the tomb of Renaissance artist Raphael. Extreme Weather Torments Italy Rain, snow and extreme cold weather was continuing to cause disruption across Italy, especially in the north. The northeastern region of Liguria, Tuscany and Emilia Romagna were on red alert for the bad weather. About 1,000 people in the province of Reggio Emilia were evacuated after the River Enza burst its banks and flood waters invaded residential and industrial areas. Several roads were closed on Tuesday and although the Italian rail network company resumed rail services, authorities advised travelers to stay updated as the situation was constantly changing. In Bologna, strong winds caused damage to some buildings and several trees fell on roads. The wind was also very strong in Le Marche region, reaching 100 kilometers per hour. In the southern regions connections to the island were disrupted as well as by strong winds and seas, including between the ports of

Naples, Pozzuoli and Sorrento, Ischia, Procida and Capri, and some of the connections around Sicily. Christmas Must See: The Artistic Lights of Salerno The Luminarie of Salerno or Artistic Lights started 12 years ago and now is a must for the Christmas period for many families from Italy and other countries to visit Salerno. The city organizes its unique event with light shows and installations along the streets and public squares, creating a magical atmosphere and attracting thousands of visitors. Last year, there were more than two million tourists in the city who visited the event from November through January. This year the lights started on November 11 and they will stay on through January 21, 2018. The light installations are turned on each evening at sunset and stay on late into the night. The Villa Comunale public garden hosts the “Il Giardino Incantato” which is populated by bright animals that seem to come to life; it is open daily until midnight, and 1 a.m. on holidays and Sundays. There is a Christmas market that runs until January 8 and funny penguins are displayed on the waterfront the city. This year the theme of the light is a marine mythological environment, with light artworks shaped like dolphins, sirens, tritons, forests and animals, aquatic plants and blue lights that are at the top to simulate the color and the waves of blue seas. Italian Researchers Develop Robot Wheelchair On Tuesday, a robot wheelchair was presented in Rome that will make it easier for disabled people to move around in an upright position. The prototype was developed by Volterra motorial rehabilitation center of Italian workplace accidents insurance agency INAIL and Pisa’s Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna. The wheelchair is called RISE (Robotic Innovation for Standing and Enabling), and it is a model of social bio-robotics applied to people who have suffered a serious accident. The system moves like a vehicle operated by remote control and can change form like a ‘transformer.’ It should be for sale late in 2018.

HISTORY: THE GREAT WHITE FLEET From Naval History and Heritage Command

awesome battle capabilities. This was timely, for, in 1906, hostilities with Japan seemed possible; the Japanese navy dominated the Pacific and posed a potential threat to the Philippines. America’s problems with Japan arose shortly after Roosevelt mediated the Treaty of Portsmouth in 1906, ending the Russo-Japanese War. In that conflict the Russian fleet had been annihilated by the Japanese. But despite their triumphs over the Russians on the high seas, the Japanese failed to get all they felt they deserved at the peace table and blamed Roosevelt for it.

On the warm, cloudy morning of December 16, 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt stood on the weather-deck of the presidential yacht Mayflower, anchored in the waters off Hampton Roads, while throngs of onlookers on shore, watched as 16 battleships of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet, all painted white, save for gilded bows, steamed in a long majestic column out of Hampton Roads to the open sea, flanked by their attending auxiliary ships. SPOTLIGHT: MC1 DANIEL BARKER Mass Communication Specialist First Class Daniel Barker, from Greenville, North Carolina, reported to U.S. Naval Support Activity Naples in January of 2016 after graduating from the Military Visual Journalism program at Syracuse University. Barker has served as the installation’s Deputy Public Affairs Officer and command photographer for two years. As a Mass Communication Specialist, he has been NSA Naples’ eye behind the shutter, telling the base and its personnel’s story through photos, video, and written products. Many military and civilian personnel have learned to appreciate the art and science of photography from Barker’s regular camera training and mentorship sessions. He has spent countless hours teaching members of the community how to professionally capture the exceptional work that gets done here every day. He is also the man behind the base’s bi-weekly “PAO Notes,” sending thousands of notices over the years about what’s going on around here. That’s not all. Odds are he’s probably captured a smile and witty quote from many of you for the “Man on the Street” segment in this very paper! Barker enjoys pursuing his photography skills outside of work as well. His talent has brought him all over Europe during his tour here, photographing for fashion and jewelry designers, with some of his work even appearing in fashion magazines. He will be leaving NSA Naples in January to report to USS Wasp’s (LHD 1) media shop. Thanks for everything you’ve done here Petty Officer Barker and fair winds and following seas in all your future journeys!

ENERGY CONSERVATION I’m Dreaming of a Green Christmas From NSA Naples Energy Management Team

The holiday season is generally a big time for energy use, but that doesn’t mean it has to be that way. Here are 14 ways to save energy (and money) during the holidays: Switch to LED Christmas Lights LED Christmas lights use 90% less electricity than regular Christmas lights, and can be purchased for around $10 a strand. Use Fiber Optic Decorations Fiber optic trees and decorations are the ultimate in energy efficiency. In most cases, they use a single light bulb located in the base of the unit to light the entire decoration – now that’s energy smart and budget smart! Limit The Time That Lights are On Wait until dark to turn on your Christmas lights; then, turn them off before you go to bed. Six hours or less of daily use is a good goal to aim for. Do you have trouble remembering to turn your lights on and off? Then, set a timer, and forget about it. Turn Off Lights at Room When the Tree is Lit The lights on your Christmas tree should provide more than enough lighting to navigate around the room. Turn Down Thermostat When you Have Guests Extra bodies in the house means extra warmth at no cost to you. Buy Energy Star Electronics Energy Star certified electronics – TVs, DVD players, VCRs and cordless phones – use up to 60 – less electricity that their non-certified counterparts. Visit energystar.gov for a list of qualifying models, and shop smart. Bake Several Dishes at a Time The holiday season is a big time for baking. Make the most of your oven and the energy that goes into heating it, by cooking several dishes at once. Remember, it takes the same amount of energy to heat a full oven as it does a nearly-empty one. Use the Smallest Appliances to Get the Job Done Use your microwave and toaster oven for small holiday cooking tasks, and save the oven for big cooking tasks. Keep Lids on Pots Foods cook faster (meaning less energy use) when the lid is on. Unplug Phantom Energy User Before You Go On Vacation TVs, DVD players, computers, printers, radios and many other electronics use energy even when they are not turned on. Unplug these items before you go on vacation, and enjoy the energy savings.

SOUND OFF: YOUR MOST MEMORABLE WINTER HOLIDAY

PS2 Sirsamuel Corley “Christmas underway on a ship, the whole department came together, the Navy can be a family sometimes.”

CHRISTMAS CAROL

Christine Perrotta “Smelling Scottish soup my grandmother made while growing up in Scotland.”

MA2 Dennis Brandon “Spending Christmas in Romania, it was the coldest winter in my life.”

MC1 Theron Godbold “Bah, Humbug! I don’t really have any memorable ones.”

PS2 Abekoe Biaou “I’m making a memorable one, planning to see the Eiffel Tower when I visit Paris for the first time.”

From page 1

“For Scrooge, it is the literal and figurative ‘Wake Up Call’ he has been missing for years.” Berryman notee the humor of the Ghost, instilling her character with a sarcastic and dry wit, but one which is touched with genuine concern for her charge. “In the present scenes, Scrooge has yet to realize he is complicit in the difficulties of the lives of others, and it is Present’s job to ensure he does not escape the ramifications of his choices,” she added. David Wunderlich and Lindi Denning were memorably believable as the Crachits, ably containing the buoyancy of the ebullient Crachit children and displaying heartfelt sorrow during the Future sequence. Kristi Hess and Jessa Salvitti were raucous as Scrooge’s housekeepers, Dilber and Crowe, and provided a needed lightness to the miser’s household. Zane Barnum and Amber Flores were lovely as Fred/Young Scrooge and Belle, showing the path that might have been for Ebenezer in a touching and honest performance. Mike Salvitti and Tamera Terrell were sweet and endearing as the Fezziwigs, and highlighted a delightful dance and song combination in Act I. Jake Salvitti showed great promise in multiple roles, providing tenderness as Pringle and humor as the Charity Collector, ringing his

salvation bell furiously at the intractable Scrooge. Gabrielle Moghaddam and Nathan Vieux showed wisdom beyond their years as Ghosts of Past and Future/Marley, respectively. Each provides a depth of character unexpected in so young a performer. No review of “A Christmas Carol” would be complete without mentioning Tiny Tim, played sweetly by Piper Marsden. She was surpris-

ingly professional for one so young, and maked the most of her opportunities on stage. Finally, the ensemble performers provide a realistic background to the city, adding depth and characterization and made the world of Ebenezer Scrooge as appealing (if not more so) than that of the current day. Naples Community Theatre next takes the stage in January, with a collection of songs from Broadway’s

biggest shows. NCT supports the NAHS production of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” in March, and will return with a full length production in May (rights currently pending). NCT is always looking for additional talented actors, stage hands, musicians, and performers and can be reached at DSN 626-5411 or via the Facebook Page Naples Community Theatre.

DOD AUDIT

From page 1

“With consistent feedback from auditors, we can focus on improving the processes of our day-to-day work,” the comptroller said. “Annual audits also ensure visibility over the quantity and quality of the equipment and supplies our troops use.” The DoD Office of the Inspector General hired independent public accounting firms to conduct audits of individual components – the Army, Navy, Air Force, agencies, activities and more – as well as a departmentwide consolidated audit to summarize all results and conclusions. “Beginning in 2018, our audits will occur annually, with reports issued November 15,” Norquist said. Looming Shutdown Norquist also addressed the looming government shutdown. Military personnel will continue to report for duty to ensure the safety of the United States and its citizens, he said. Military and civilian personnel conducting operations around the world will also report, he added. “Any time we get close to the end of a CR, we automatically go through and update our contingency plans,” Norquist said. “And so we’ve had to do that several times this year.” If a shutdown occurs, military personnel will report to work as normal, but the department cannot pay them until the shutdown ends. Civilian employees – and the department has roughly 700,000 – will be notified before the shutdown what to do. Employees performing an excepted activity – such as law enforcement – will report to work, he said.

“I cannot emphasize too much how destructive a shutdown is,” Norquist said. “We’ve talked before about the importance of maintenance on weapons systems and others, but if it’s not an excepted activity, there’ll be work stoppage on many of those maintenance functions.” Congress is considering passing a two-week extension of the continuing resolution, which would give the legislators until December 22 to pass a budget. The Defense Department has operated under a continuing resolution for 1,081 days over the past nine years, White noted. Continuing Resolutions Affect Readiness “And so we are optimistic that the Congress will pass a robust and predictable, fully funded [fiscal year 2018] budget,” she said. “Nothing has had a greater impact on combat readiness than CRs … and at a time where security threats are high, we really do need the predictability in the budget – certainty that we don’t have with CRs.” Continuing resolutions are supposed to be short-term bridges for financing. A long-term CR is disruptive, Norquist said. “Every time … you add to it, it creates more challenges,” he added. One problem with a CR is there can be no new starts, the comptroller told reporters. “In the administration’s budget, we requested additional money for munitions, and so we would like to increase the production of some of those munitions,” he said. “What the CR says is, ‘Stop, wait, don’t award that contract yet,’ which delays when you begin to increase the quantity and the production,” he explained, adding that none of this can be fixed until there is a proper budget.

Navy Launches New Branding Campaign From Navy Recruiting Command Public Affairs

During the 2017 Army-Navy football game, which was held December 8, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the U.S. Navy launched a new, branding campaign aimed at attracting a new generation of recruits, along with its new tagline, “Forged by the Sea.” “Sea to Stars,” the first TV commercial featuring the new tagline and branding, aired on CBS during the second quarter of the Army-Navy game, as well as on the video screens in the stadium. A second commercial, “Game,” also aired in-stadium. The new commercials can be viewed on the Navy Live blog at http://www.navy.mil/ forged. There was also a wide range of innovative social media initiatives before, during and after the game, including five augmented reality filters on the Navy Recruiting Command’s Facebook platform that allowed fans to creatively celebrate the Navy, the game and the new tagline. Facebook Live was used to create an Army-Navy game day show that provided an exclusive second-screen experience for fans watching the game at home. Called “Sea It Live,” the show was hosted by two active duty Naval Academy Alumni, and featured 10-15 segments throughout the day of the game. In between segments, the Facebook page was populated with unique content that highlighted Sailors and their unique stories. Garvin said the game-day launch represented only the first wave of an integrated marketing campaign that will include a steady level of advertising on digital and social media platforms during the winter, before a full rollout in March. Additional marketing elements will debut throughout the year. “The Navy is now recruiting young men

and women of the Centennial Generation, who have different goals, expectations and information-gathering habits than their Millennial predecessors,” Garvin said. “As such, the Navy recognized the necessity to develop a new marketing campaign and media strategy that more effectively reach, educate and inspire the best-and-brightest prospective recruits.” “Over the years, we have changed our tagline several times to capture everything our great Navy represents in just a few simple words,” Garvin said. “After much research and creative development, we emerged with a deep understanding of our organization’s purpose and potential – all of which tie back to the sea. For more than 200 years our Sailors have been tested and shaped by the sea. Our new tagline perfectly captures the transformative impact the Navy and the sea has on our Sailors.” From now through early March, NRC will run a steady advertising campaign on a range of digital and social media platforms. The campaign will feature “Sea to Stars,” “Game,” a series of six-second commercials, and a variety of banner advertisements. In March, two additional commercials and digital and social media components will be completed, www.navy.com will be updated and NRC will launch its fully integrated campaign. “Our new brand platform, tagline and marketing strategy would not be possible without the incredible participation of Sailors, veterans and other key stakeholders who participated in the research, creative development and testing. The access and feedback were invaluable as we forged our new brand,” Garvin said. “Their contributions will help ensure that “Forged by the Sea” and our future marketing efforts resonate with the Navy community and prospective recruits for years to come.”

Grand Opening for Spinz at Bowling Alley From MWR

The much anticipated Spinz restaurant opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Strikers Bowling Center on Friday, Dec. 8. In his opening remarks, Captain Todd Abrahamson, Commanding Officer, Naval Support Activity Naples said that the addition of Spinz is “bringing a little bit of America back over here and having the best of both worlds.” The restaurant is the first “We Proudly Serve” Starbucks coffee bar on an overseas Naval base, and it is

also the first Starbucks in Southern Italy. The construction, food preparation training, and opening of the restaurant encompassed a few months of intense work and was spear-headed by many key players including Charles Sciascia and Bill Koepp, from ORION Food Systems, and Cindy Medeira, CNIC Culinary Innovation & Facilities Development. Medeira explained that Spinz is a compilation of multiple brands for CNIC. “This is a little bit of our better burger, a little bit of

our rustic crust pizza, and a little bit of our Bombers,” she said, “and, we proudly serve coffee.” Customers are eager to try the new food and to get a taste of home with their favorite Starbucks coffee, and are discovering that the new food and drinks were worth the wait. One customer commented on Facebook, “the quality of the food you get is worth the wait.” Download a menu and hours at www.navymwrnaples.com/spinz and come try the gourmet burgers, wings, pizza and more.

Where Did the Christmas Tree Tradition Come From? From NSA Public Affairs

Every year across the globe millions of Christmas trees are harvested, sold and placed in our homes. We decorate them, put presents under them and after the holidays, the trees are retired for the rest of the year. These traditions started long ago. For thousands of years plants and trees that hold their green color during the winter months have had special significance in several countries. The modern Christmas tree came from German tradition. Christian households often brought trees inside to decorate. Many believe that the first instance of a lit Christmas tree came about when Protestant minister Martin Luther saw stars shining through an evergreen and tried to recreate the scene for his family using lighted candles. America adopted this custom much later, originally

denying their use because they were seen as pagan symbols. As a matter of fact, in 1659 a law was enacted outlawing the celebration of Christmas as anything other than a religious observance. Still, the tree won out, and by the turn of the 20th century Christmas decorations were being imported from Germany, and trees graced the homes of many American families. The tradition was accepted so quickly that by the 1940’s Christmas trees were springing up in town squares across the nation. The most famous of these trees may be the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree in New York City. The Rockefeller Center tree was first placed in 1931. It was undecorated and placed by construction workers working at the site. Two years after that the tree was erected and lit with electric lights. Now the Rockefeller tree boasts an astounding 25,000 Christmas lights. Christmas trees are now grown in all 50 states,
