This weekend we honor the 15 year anniversary of one of the most significant attacks on American soil in our history. On September 11, 2001 almost 3,000 people lost their lives, and over 6,000 were injured. On Friday, September 9th, we will hold a Remembrance Ceremony in the piazza at Capodichino, to commemorate those who lost their lives and to honor the resiliency of our nation. Since 2001, we have changed significantly as a military force, shifting our focus to counter non-state actors in low intensity operations. During the period of the anniversary, please remain vigilant while travelling and conducting you daily business. When in doubt, report unusual activity to local authorities, and remember our 5SI strategy – if you See Something Suspicious, Say Something Immediately.

I have recently noticed an increase of trash on the Support Site. If you live, work, or visit the Support Site, please make sure your trash finds a trash can, and if you come across a stray piece of trash please pick it up and help it to find its right and proper home. We’re also coordinating and increased effort from our contracted trash service providers, but everyone can help.

For those who reside on the Support Site, please remember to take advantage of our bulk pick-up program. Simply call the housing trouble desk and schedule a bulk trash pick-up – they’ll come to your residence on the next Friday. Large and bulky items placed in the waste pads make it difficult for the trash collectors to make their pick-ups, causing everyone to suffer. By arranging for a bulk waste pick-up, not only can you help out your community, you can also avoid the hassle of dragging large items to the trash pad.

September is emergency preparedness month and serves as a reminder that we must all be prepared for a crisis. We live in a seismically active area and have the constant visual of Vesuvius reminding us of the importance of preparedness. This year’s preparedness theme is “Don’t Wait, Communicate. Make Your Emergency Plan Today.” In following the theme, I encourage everyone to meet with their families or friends and review plans for unexpected emergencies. These plans should include meeting points, communication methods, and necessary equipment for various situations. Keep the family pets in mind as well. If they are on medication or require special supplies it is important to keep them in mind. Please stay on the lookout for news about our upcoming evacuation training exercise occurring on October 20th, we’re looking for volunteers to help us better prepare to serve the community!

Researchers From Rome, San Diego Investigating Secrets to Long Life in Acciaroli Researchers from Rome’s Sapienza University and the San Diego School of Medicine spent the last six months investigating the extraordinary longevity of residents of Acciaroli, a village in the province of Salerno, in the Campania region. In Acciaroli more than one in 10 (for a total of 81 residents) of the village’s population of 700 is over 100 years old. Scientists found that residents in Acciaroli and tiny communities nearby seem to be immune to dementia,

heart disease and other chronic conditions that affect most of the people in the Western countries. An unusual number of centenarians have a low level of hormone that affects circulation called adrenomedullin which is present in very low quantity in the centenarians studied and it seems to be a powerful protecting factor, helping the optimal development of microcirculation. Researchers are extending the study and aside from blood tests they also carried out cardiac and neurological tests. They are looking into whether genetics could associate combine with lifestyle factors such as died and physical activity. Locals in the Acciaroli and nearby villages eat rosemary almost every day, which improves brain function, and they also have a diet based on olive oil, fresh fruit, vegetables and fish. Locals practice some physical activity daily, like fishing, walking or gardening.

Italy Gives Quake Sufferers a Tax Break Economy Minister Pier Carlo Padoan signed a decree suspending tax payments in 17 municipalities in central regions hit by a devastating earthquake until the end of the year. Meanwhile on Wednesday tremors continued in central Italy following the August 24, 6.2 magnitude earthquake. The tremors included a 3.4-magnitude earthquake between Arquata and Norcia. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi presented his national plan for earthquake and other natural disaster risk prevention. His Home Italy plan will gradually make the country anti-seismic but knowing that reducing risk to zero is “unrealistic,” he acknowledged. Renzi presented his plan to communities, professionals, local and regional lawmakers, unions, environmentalists and builders in the near future.

NAVY HISTORY: STAR SPANGLED BANNER From the National Park Service

On September 13, 1814, Francis Scott Key, wrote the words of a short poem that eventually become the lyrics to our nation’s national anthem.

Key wrote his poem in 1814, in the last year of the War of 1812.

The United States had declared war on Great Britain in June 1812. At first, the British were too busy fighting the French to devote much energy to the pesky Americans.

Once Napoleon abdicated in April 1814, the British set out to teach their former colonies a lesson.

In August 1814, 50 British warships sailed up the Chesapeake Bay. After occupying Washington, D.C., on August 24, the British burned the Capitol, the White House, and other public buildings. Then they turned their attention northward toward Baltimore.

Fort McHenry, the starshaped fortress which guards the entrance to Baltimore Harbor, was all that stood between the mighty British navy and the city of Baltimore.

Key, a successful lawyer and amateur poet, from Georgetown, in Washington, D.C., was on board the 80-gun British warship HMS Tonnant to help negotiate the release of American prisoners near the end

of the War of 1812.

Unknown to Key and his comrades, the British were about to attack Fort McHenry.

The Americans were detained onboard the Tonnant, because the British feared if they were released, they would be able to report back to the American forces about their strength, position and intent to attack the fort.

Unable to leave the British warship, Key – who had been opposed to the war – stood by helplessly as the British rained shot and shell on the fort.

He found he cared very much about the outcome. The bombardment had lasted for more than 24 hours. At dawn, Key strained to see through the morning mist. What he saw was a huge American flag flying over the fort. Joyfully, Key reported to the prisoners below deck that Fort McHenry had survived the attack.

Overcome by “joyful triumph” Key began to jot words down on a piece of paper: “O say can you see . . . .”

With Fort McHenry standing strong, the British Navy sailed away, to the cheers of the defenders.

For many Americans, the War of 1812 had become a “Second War of Independence.”

More than a century after its first publication, the song was adopted as the American national anthem, first by an executive order from President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, and then by a Congressional resolution in 1931, signed by President Herbert Hoover.

SPOTLIGHT: SGT. JENNYLYS RIVERA

USO Naples congratulates Army Sgt. Jennylys Rivera, for being selected as the Volunteer of the Year for the Europe region. This prestigious award recognizes the outstanding contribution of Rivera to the Naples community, a model for the USO Europe region.

“Sergeant sent me. She told me it’s the right thing for me,” is a statement heard at USO Naples by many new volunteer recruits. That sergeant is Rivera who is a leader in her unit, the 2nd NATO South Battalion, and at USO Naples.

Rivera has been indispensable at strengthening USO Naples’ relationship with the U.S. Army detachments at locations nearby. She collaborated with the Italian Air Force and the units at Grazzanise to arrange for the USO to bring their mobile unit to serve an American-style barbecue to the troops stationed there. Thanks to her efforts more than 100 troops enjoyed an afternoon of free food and fun.

Since beginning as a USO Volunteer in 2014, Rivera has given more than 400 hours of service, at 130 events, including 32 in just the past three months. She shares her infectious spirit of appreciation to all fellow service members, volunteers and Italians. “I do, because of the USO,” she says.

“Rivera has sat with a young soldier, encouraging them to take their liberty to get out and explore Naples and Rome,” USO Naples Program and Volunteer Coordinator Shannon McCaulley said. “During the USO Summer Story Time, Jenny read stories in character voices and led the young military children in games; and in preparation for the USO Dodge Ball Tournament, Jenny encouraged junior and senior soldiers to join teams and participate.”

Rivera’s encouragement to get others involved through participating and volunteering at USO events has expanded USO Naples reach to serve our troops wherever they are. Rivera is an outstanding individual, worthy of the representing the region as USO Europe Volunteer of the Year.

KFOR Conducts Change of Command From KFOR Public Affairs Office

Kosovo Force conducted the Change of Command Ceremony between Maj. Gen. Guglielmo Luigi Miglietta and Maj. Gen. Giovanni Fungo at Camp Film City Pristina, Kosovo, on September 1, 2016.

The ceremony was attended by the commander of Allied Joint Force Command Naples, U.S. Navy Adm. Michelle Howard, the Italian Chief of Defense, Gen. Claudio Graziano as well as President Thaçi and senior Representatives of Institutions in Kosovo and the International Community.

Howard thanked Miglietta for the important results achieved while pursuing KFOR XX motto “Shaping the Change.”

“I have personally been impressed with your calm judgement, professionalism, and ability to reach out across the spectrum of religious, political, and military leaders to find solutions to complex issues,” Howard said.

Following her speech Howard welcomed Fungo and wished him all the best for his forthcoming tenure as KFOR XXI Commander.

Miglietta expressed gratitude to NATO senior commanders Howard and her

predecessor Adm. Mark Ferguson for their ongoing guidance and support. He also thanked the Italian Chief of Defense, Gen. Graziano for his generous trust and copious support.

“This past year, KFOR XX has continued working to consolidate progress and to keep the momentum towards full stabilization of the region,” Miglietta said.

“All KFOR soldiers, commanders and I have been particularly honored to have worked so closely in such productive way. Our motto, ‘Shaping the Change,’ expressed itself in the way we operated,” Miglietta concluded.

ENERGY CONSERVATION Simplest Ways to Start Saving Water at Home From NSA Naples Energy Management Team

If you haven’t taken the following steps towards water conservation in your home then today is the day to start.

• Fix all leaks. This is the most obvious thing that you can do to stop wasting water at home. Why isn’t it done yet?!

• Replace your showerhead with a lowflow alternative. You shower every day so it’s important to reduce the amount of water that you’re using when you do.

• Install aerators in your other faucets.

Your showerhead isn’t the only faucet where too much water is coming out at once. Add aerators to your other faucets to reduce the amount of water flow.

• Convert your toilet to a low-flush toilet. Waste less water every time that you flush. One simple way to do this is to fill a plastic milk jug halfway with pebbles or gravel and put it inside of your toilet tank.

• Insulate all of your hot water pipes. You waste a lot of water by running it to heat it up. This is a lot less likely to be a problem if your water pipes are properly insulated.

• Water your plants with your extra water. Collect rainwater as well as safe greywater around the house and use this water in landscape watering around your home.

• Turn off the water when you are at the sink. When brushing teeth and shaving at the sink, stop letting the water run. Learn to wash your face with cool water instead of letting it run to heat up. These little things do make a difference day after day.

• Do full loads of everything that requires water. Dishwashers and washing machines should never be run when they are only half-full. It’s a waste of water.

• Find ways to replace water use with other options. For example, if you usually use running water to thaw your frozen meats then consider stopping that practice and thawing them in the refrigerator instead.

Non-Combatant Evacuation Operation Exercise

On October 20, 2016, from 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the NEX Food Court at Support Site, NSA Naples will conduct a Non-Combatant Evacuation Operation (NEO) & Relocation Reception Center (RRC) exercise.

While we hope we never have cause for an evacuation, we need to be as prepared as possible.

Events leading to an actual evacuation may be chaotic, and participation in the exercise we will help us be better prepared. This exercise will allow us an opportunity to walk through the process, helping to determine if all of our personal documents are in order, and discover what else each of us and our families (including our pets) may need in the event of an actual evacuation.

Being familiar with the process and having the opportunity to ask questions of the agencies that will be assisting us during an actual evacuation can help reduce our anxiety level a bit. Please come over and go through the process

with us. To help us improve the process, you will be asked to complete a feedback card regarding your processing experience and any comments. All NSA Naples assigned organizations and agencies are being asked to support the exercise by allowing their personnel the opportunity to participate with their families.

Participation is open to the following: DOD Personnel and their family members; DOD Civilian Personnel and their families; DOD Contractors and their families; U.S. Government employees and their families; U.S. Military Retirees residing in the local area; Family pets of those listed above (dogs and cats only).

NOSC Thrift Store Reopens From Naples Overseas Support Club

The Naples Overseas Support Club (NOSC) Thrift Store at Naval Support Activity Naples Support Site celebrated its official reopening August 9. Every August the NOSC Thrift Store reorganizes for the upcoming school year and reopens with a celebration.

The celebration this year included Italian ice sales, giveaways and raffles.

The grand prize was a USO Day Trip for Two to Rome, which was won by Misty Howland.

“My first time visiting the NOSC Thrift Store was during their grand reopening,” Howland said. “We had just PSC’d to Naples the day prior so we were out exploring Support Site. So glad we stopped in the Thrift Store as I won the USO trip for two to Rome from the grand reopening raffle. What a

NOSC President Robin Lee said this was one of the most successful re-openings in recent thrift store history.

“We are looking forward to another successful year so that we can continue making a difference in our community,” Lee said.

Proceeds generated by the thrift store are reinvested back into the community in the form of charitable giving to base sanctioned organizations and scholarships for graduating high school seniors.

The Naples Overseas Support Club (NOSC) is a nonprofit command-recognized charitable and social organization working for the benefit of the American military and civilian personnel here. After Stevens spoke, he and Giordano conducted the ceremonial ‘Passing of the Cutlass,’ symbolizing the change of office, and Giordano assuming the title of the 14th MCPON. Giordano then delivered remarks saying, “Admiral, I am honored to have been afforded this opportunity and it is one I do not take lightly.”

He continued, “Now with one foot anchored smartly on the history and heritage of our service, and one foot stepping forward into the future, I look forward to serving this great Navy of ours as the 14th master chief petty officer of the Navy with all the reverence, respect and action incumbent on the office.”

Following the ceremony a small reception was held where friends, loved ones and shipmates bid MCPON Mike and Theresa Stevens farewell and welcomed MCPON Steven and Elka Giordano.

Safe Feeding For You and Your Pets From U.S. Food and Drug Administration

You may think of your dogs or cats as family members, but do you handle their food and feeding utensils the same way you handle your own? You should! You wouldn’t eat off the same plate or drink out of the same glass, day after day, without washing them between meals, would you?

So it stands to reason you shouldn’t neglect to wash your pet’s food bowls between meals every day and the water bowl every day or two.

Dogs and cats (just like people) have bacterial microbes in their mouths and these microbes can be transferred to dishes the pet eats and drinks from. Food left in the dishes can provide these microbes with a good

environment for multiplying (moisture, oxygen and nutrients) and can produce illness in people who touch the dish, or your pet, who eats or drinks from that yucky dish.

The same good hygiene practices that apply to handling and storing food for people should also apply to food for pets.

Leftovers should be stored in a closed container and refrigerated if the food is moist.

To be safe, remember to wash your hands in warm, soapy water after touching pet food and feeding dishes. And wash and dry your pet’s dishes and storage containers before refilling them with new food. Both you and your pet will be happier – and safer – if you do.
