Naples Wildcats Volleyball Teams Undefeated in Sigonella By Brenda Dye

The Naples High School Girls and Boys Volleyball Teams were hungry to win this weekend when they traveled to Sigonella to open their fall season against the Jaguars. The Lady Wildcats are in a rebuilding year, with only three returning starters and three additional returning players. Senior and co-captain, Sierra Dye, who has been an All-European Libero for the past two years, has been shifted to outside hitter, along with sophomore Dani Ramirez, who was the setter last year. Sophomore, Marissa Dye, an outside hitter last year, is now a setter and right-side hitter for the team, alongside sophomore, Natalia Woznicki, who transferred this year from Poland. “With all of the talent we have on the team this year,

we’ve decided to make some adjustments,” Coach Kenny Byler said. “Because we have confidence in the defensive skills of all our players, we thought Sierra’s leadership and volleyball experience would be best utilized by having her in a position that enables her to be a constant presence on the court.” On Friday night, transfer Woznicki, proved to be a powerful addition to the Wildcat roster by collecting 5 kills, 8 aces and 9 assists. Freshmen, Jil Hudson is looking strong as a middle hitter, scoring 8 kills on Friday, while returning starter, Marissa Dye added 8 aces and 11 assists for Naples. Saturday morning hosted another great day of volleyball for the Lady Wildcats. Junior middle hitter, Kayla Music scored 6 kills, while Sierra Dye served WILDCATS VOLLEYBALL Page 11 CAPTAIN’S CORNER. . . . . . . . . 2 BASE NOTES. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 NAVY HISTORY . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4 FFSC CALENDAR . . . . . . . . . . . 5 SOUND OFF . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6 MOVIES . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9 JOBS . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 12

CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Doug Carpenter NSA Naples Commanding Officer

There are only 45 days until the General Election on November 8, and in addition to the Presidential Election there are many other important offices which will be decided by voters including 34 Seats in the U.S. Senate, all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, 12 Governorships, 3 U.S. territories, and a plethora of state and local offices. Due to our location overseas almost all of our votes will be cast through the absentee voting program. Although states differ on their processing of absentee ballots, all valid absentee ballots are counted in the final deciding tally. The Federal Voting Assistance Program is easily available to us at FVAP.org, and the website will walk you through the absentee voting process specific to your state to ensure your vote is received and counted. Additionally, our NSA Naples voting assistance officer is Lt. Steven Monahan. If you are having trouble figuring out how to vote in your state or would like to coordinate training for your command, please contact him directly. On Tuesday evening we held the quarterly NSA Naples Town Hall meeting, and AFN broadcast it live on the radio at 107FM. My town halls are intended to provide the community face-to-face interaction with the leadership of the installation on a regular basis. In response to questions from the last quarterly town hall, NSA Naples has increased library hours, opened the car lifts at the auto hobby shop, and expanded internet band-width offerings on the Support Site. This week’s town hall brought forth concerns about repairs on the Support Site playgrounds and the housing sprinkler installation project that will impact some Support Site residents. There is work ongoing to repair a few of the playgrounds and put them back in to use for our kids. I’ll have more information on the timeline and the plan put out through housing and our Facebook presence. These town halls are a great way to get your point of view heard directly by the base leadership, and in turn to hear the latest news about the community. Thanks to all of those who participated and asked questions. Energy awareness is a topic that should be at the forefront of everyone’s mind and daily habit patterns. What are you doing at work and at home to save energy? Even something as simple as conserving water can have a large impact on energy savings as it moving less water saves electricity by requiring less electrical pumping. There are many ways to save energy, and I look forward to hearing good ideas from the community about how to save energy at NSA Naples. Please have the conversation with your family and remember to turn off the lights and the computer when not in use! Stay safe and have a great weekend – GO WILDCATS!

COMPILED BY TERESA MEROLA NSA NAPLES PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Thousands Applaud San Gennaro Blood Miracle in Naples The famed blood miracle of San Gennaro occurred once again on Monday at 10:38 a.m. in Naples when Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, the Archbishop of Naples, held up a vial containing the blood of the 3rd-century saint while a traditional white handkerchief was waved. The announcement was greeted with applause in the cathedral and a square outside. According to the cult around San Gennaro, his blood was collected by a woman named Eusebia shortly after his death. Devotion to the annual liquefaction, however, wasn’t documented until 1389, and over the next few centuries reports circulated about the blood melting up to three times every year: His feast on September 19; December 16 to commemorate the 1631 eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, believed to have been halted by the saint’s intervention; and the day before the first Sunday in May, celebrating the reunification of his relics with a procession through the city’s streets. Neapolitans consider the blood liquefaction to be a good omen for the city; with disaster following when the blood fails to liquefy, as in 1527 when tens of thousands of people died from the plague, and in 1980 when almost 3,000 people were killed in an earthquake that hit southern Italy. A group of Italian and international scientists have analyzed the contents of the vials, establishing that they do contain blood, but have been unable to explain the phenomenon. The vials will remain on view in the cathedral for several days before being returned to a vault in the chapel of the cathedral’s treasury. Survey Says: Italy Has Highest Rate of Teenage Smokers According to a study by the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD), Italy has the highest rate of teenage smokers in Europe. The report indicates that 37 percent of Italians aged between 15 and 16 smoked in 2015, compared

to an average of 21 percent for the other European countries. Italy was followed by Bulgaria and Croatia with 33 percent, while Iceland and Norway had the lowest rates, respectively 6 percent and 10 percent. 8th Century Rome Church Now Charging Tourists for Photos, Selfies Tourists in Rome will no longer be free to take a photo of themselves with their hands placed in the Bocca della Verita’, a marble face known as the mouth of truth. Legend says that if you are a liar, you’ll lose some fingers. Now a visit to the mustsee monuments for tourists visiting Rome means having to pay two euros for one photo. The deacon of the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin started to charge tourists for access to the statue and one photograph for raising funds to restore the 8th century church. Tourists will not only have to pay to access to the site but will be watched by at least one church official to ensure they only get one photo per ticket. And, if you are alone they will even take a photo for you. According to a medieval legend, the “Mouth of Truth” bites the hand of all those who say false and have the audacity to put the limb in the jaws of the male face. The mask, which probably was a manhole with human features and with the mouth open to let water out, is one of the most famous sights of Rome and was also made famous by the 1953 film “Roman Holiday,” which starred Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. Famous Neapolitan Puppet Festival Runs Through Sunday The festival of the guarattelle, meaning the art of Neapolitan puppets, started on Thursday in the Villa Comunale in Naples. The most important representatives of this ancient Neapolitan art are performing interesting and entertaining stage performances with the typical guarattelle, puppets made with a glove puppet technique in which the characters, for more than five centuries, are inspired by Neapolitan and Italian masks. The festival ends on Sunday with live performances starting at 10 a.m.

NAVY HISTORY: World’s First Nuclear-Powered Sub Commissioned

The Nautilus (SSN 571) entering New York harbor, August 25, 1958. Nautilus had recently made a trans-polar voyage under the Arctic. Photo courtesy of the Navy Arctic Submarine Laboratory. By Lt. Cmdr. Benjamin Amdur

The world’s first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus (SSN 571) was commissioned on September 30, 1954, at a pierside ceremony at Groton, Connecticut. At 11 a.m. Jan. 17, 1955, Nautilus moved from the pier, and shortly afterward, Nautilus’ commanding officer, Cmdr. Eugene P. Wilkinson, ordered the following signal sent: “Underway on nuclear power.” Accommodations for the new vessel included 2 and 3-berth staterooms for the 12 officers, a single room for the captain, and a wardroom. For the more than 90 enlisted men, each had their own rack, a mess that could seat 36 of the crew, or up to 50 for movies and lectures. A juke-box was hooked to the boat’s hi-fi system, along with an ice cream machine and soda dispenser. Better yet, the nuclear-powered system would provide unlimited fresh water and air conditioning. The business end of Nautilus featured six torpedo tubes and carried 26 torpedoes. She was also outfitted with auxiliary diesel generators and a battery

to “bring home” the boat if needed Nautilus would achieve a number of firsts during sea trials, including the fastest submerged transit undertaken by a submarine: 90 hours from New London, Conn., to San Juan, Puerto Rico at an average speed of 16 knots (the previous record for that speed had been for a single hour). In exercises and war games with the fleet, Nautilus was nearly invincible. She could easily maneuver to either close on an enemy or escape one, all while remaining submerged. And she could outrun many of the Navy’s destroyers and all of the anti-submarine homing torpedoes at that time. Refueled four times during her 25 years in commission, Nautilus would sail more than a halfmillion nautical miles, most of them submerged. In 1958, Nautilus completed a secret mission requested by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to prove American technology had not taken a back seat to the Soviet space program. In a mission called Operation Sunshine, the nuclear-powered submarine passed under the North Pole on

August 3, 1958 – the first watercraft to reach the geographic “top” of the world – during a trip from Pearl Harbor to England and under the Soviet’s collective noses through the Bering Strait. Nautilus and her crew earned the Presidential Unit Citation (PUC), the first-ever awarded in peace time. Her commanding officer, Capt. William R. Anderson, was whisked away from Nautilus when she resurfaced near Iceland, brought to a White House ceremony, where Eisenhower would announce the success of Operation Sunshine. The president then presented Anderson with a Legion of Merit to go with his crew’s PUC. Nautilus’ first deployment was with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea, departing from New London Oct. 24, 1960. Upon her return, she operated in the Atlantic, participating in NATO exercises and in Oct. 1962, the naval quarantine of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. For the next 13 years, she would be involved in a variety of developmental testing programs while continuing to serve alongside many of the more modern nuclear-powered submarines. Decommissioned and stricken from the Navy rolls in 1980, Nautilus’ future was assured when the Secretary of the Interior designated the submarine as a National Historic Landmark on May 20, 1982. After a historic ship conversion, Nautilus opened to the public on April 11, 1986, to continue her service as an example of the Navy’s pioneering role in harnessing nuclear power, as the first in a fleet of nuclearpowered ships, and as steward of the American submarine force’s reputation for and history of operational excellence.

SPOTLIGHT: HM2 Christopher Brown

Hospital Corpsman Second Class Christopher Brown hails from New Port Richey, Florida. He enlisted in the Navy on October 7, 2009, upon graduation from Lafayette High School in Lafayette, Georgia, and he reported to USNH Naples on September 10, 2015, where he spent time working in the Orthopedic clinic as an Orthopedic Technician. He now spends his days assisting the Orthopedic department in both the clinical and pre/post-operative settings. Brown ensures successful operation of the Orthopedic department through managing supply orders, clinical administration, and direct patient care. He also enjoys leading the Expectant Fathers Class for the men of the community, which provides valuable information to new fathers on what to expect before, during, and after pregnancy. During his off time, Brown enjoys traveling throughout Europe with his wife and two children and taking college courses to complete his bachelor’s degree in psychology through the University of Maryland University College. He currently has plans to complete the prerequisites needed to submit a package to become a Physician’s Assistant in the Navy. His aspirations while here in Naples include continuing to guide and mentor Sailors, to pick up Petty Officer First Class and hopefully get selected to instruct Sailors going through the Orthopedic “C” school in San Antonio, Texas. His favorite quote is “It is during our actions in brief moments and our understanding of the little things in life that make us great.”

Spill Prevention and Countermeasures at Government Gas Stations From NSA Naples Public Works Department Environmental

When fueling vehicles and equipment do not “top-off” the tank. Why? “Topping off” a fuel tank leaves no room for fuel expansion or can cause a spill if you park on an angle. If you do have a spill, or drip fuel while filling the tank, then follow the spill response procedures posted at the gas station (only if you are qualified to do so). For spill response assistance, call the spill

response number posted at the gas station, 911 or commercial 081-568-4911. If the spill is because the dispenser equipment isn’t operating properly then report the problem by calling DSN 626-5203 or Comm. 081-568 5203 for the Capodichino GOV Gas Station and 081-568-4981 for Support Site GOV Gas Station. Do not ignore a spill and just drive away leaving it for someone else to take care of. Be part of the team and keep NSA Naples clean!

ENERGY CONSERVATION Smart Sensors Can Help Reduce Lighting Energy Consumption From NSA Naples Energy Management Team

Lighting accounts for the largest consumption of electricity in the US. Approximately $38 billion year is spent on energy used to produce lighting. Many facilities have incorporated motion sensors into their lighting systems in order to reduce consumption. Motion sensors are used to detect motion in an area. If the sensor does not detect movement for a prolonged amount of time the lighting circuit is de-energized. As beneficial as this invention has been, the main problem with this current technology is that it only detects motion with about 75 percent of accuracy. A Smart sensor, also known as an Image Processing Occupancy Sensor (IPOS) has recently been developed by the researchers at the Energy Department’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory. These sensors incorporate the technology commonly used in smart phones for motion detection. They have a tiny camera with a microprocessor that can detect human presence and even the number of humans in the room. With this new technology these sensors can detect motion with 90 percent accuracy. This can lead to a greater reduction in energy waste caused by lighting systems. inside and outside views of the Image Processing Occupancy Sensor (IPOS). The IPOS combines inexpensive camera and computer vision algorithms, which can recognize the presence of human occupants more than 90% of the time. Photos by Dennis Schroeder

Gold Star Families: Honoring Our Fallen Sailors and their Families From Naples Fleet and Family Support Center

Throughout the history of the United States Navy, many Sailors have paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country. Those fallen heroes are survived by parents, children, siblings and spouses, who carry their memory with them in their hearts. They do not carry this weight alone. The U.S. Navy established the Navy Gold Star (NGS) Program, October 1, 2014, to provide continuing support for surviving family members of Sailors who lost their lives while serving in an active duty status. September 25, 2016, is Gold Star Mother’s Day. Historically, mothers of fallen service members began calling themselves “Gold Star Mothers” during World War I. Since 1936, the United States has observed Gold Star Mother’s Day on the last Sunday of September to honor these mothers. Since its inception more than 10,000 Gold Star family

members have been identified from fallen service members from World War I to the present. Gold Star survivors are now presented with Gold Star lapel pins. These small lapel pins are normally presented to eligible family members prior to the military funeral service. Although they are less than an inch in size, they are packed with great meaning and emotion. They are not awards. They are symbols of honor. You may see two different kinds of Navy Gold Star pins. The Gold Star lapel button: this symbol consists of a gold star on a purple background, bordered in gold and surrounded by gold laurel leaves. It is designated for eligible survivors of service members who lose their lives during any

armed hostilities in which the United States is engaged. The next of kin deceased personnel lapel button: this symbol consists of a gold star within a circle that commemorates his or her honorable service. The gold star is also surrounded by sprigs of oak that represent the branches of the Armed Forces. It is designated for eligible survivors of service members who lose their lives while serving honorably under circumstances not defined above. The Navy is committed to providing long term assistance to surviving immediate family members. The Navy Gold Star Program is dedicated to fostering resiliency for surviving families of fallen service members regardless of how they lost their lives. Navy Gold Star coordinators connect sur-

vivors with resources such as chaplain services, personal financial counseling, school liaison assistance, family employment, clinical counseling, and area survivor events and want these individuals to know they will forever be a part of the Navy community. On our various Navy installations you will see Gold Star parking places to honor our Gold Star Families as they continue to be a special part of our Navy community. “As a survivor of a military serviceman, I’m so pleased for all of you in supporting and caring for those who have lost their love ones like mine,” a Gold Star spouse from California said. “Your kindness and cooperation is being appreciated.” For more information on the Navy Gold Star program visit www.navygoldstar.com or www.facebook.com/navygoldstar or call Fleet and Family Support Center at DSN 629-6372.

USNH NAPLES: A Tobacco Free Future U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Naples’ mission is to “promote, protect, and restore the readiness, health and well-being of those entrusted to us.” Part of this mission is promoting an initiative to maintain a healthy, unpolluted, tobacco free environment for our patients and staff. USNH Naples is joining the majority of Military Treatment Facilities in adopting a posture that incorporates a tobacco-free environment across the enterprise. Tobacco use of any form is addictive and may cause a number of serious health conditions and problems. One of the objectives of the Department of the Navy is to become tobacco free in an effort to enhance individual health and mission readiness. One health concern is Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS), commonly referred to as secondhand or passive smoke. ETS is an involuntary exposure to the hazardous contents of cigarette use and causes a public health risk to healthy non-smokers. Navy Medicine has developed a policy to provide staff, patients, and all visitors an environment that will be entirely tobacco free and discourages the use of tobacco products while promoting education on

Jane Higgins Returns for 11th Season as Head Coach of Naples Tiger Sharks By Lyndsey Hale Naples Tiger Sharks Public Relations

After many tearful good byes and a summer in limbo for our Naples Tiger Sharks (NTS) Head Coach Jane Higgins received great news: Her husband was extended for one more year, which means Coach Jane is back! “I am extremely fortunate to be returning as the NTS head coach for another year, and I am looking forward to a very exciting season with this group of talented athletes,” Higgins said. “Assisting me on deck this year are Coach Dave McPadden (second year), Coach Greg Bogler (first year) and Coach Bryanna Breeden (first year). I look forward to another fantastic season with this dedicated and driven group of coaches.” The Naples Tiger sharks are thrilled to have her and hoping to give Coach another championship season. Starting the weekend of September 11 with the annual Remembrance Meet in Sigonella with a second place finish for the team, with a final scores of: Sigonella 283, Naples 239 with 26 first place finishers on the NTS. WILDCATS VOLLEYBALL

Naples Tiger Sharks had 39 swimmers attend this meet and 16 of those swimmers were making their debut. First time competitors at the Sigonella meet were Charlotte Acona, Micheal Acona, Sienna Acona, Camden Breeden, Sarah Chambers, Sarah Cook, Lauren Giacci, Ksena Gutierrez, Hayley Johnson, Eva Johnson, Alex Markvart, Isabella Monceaux, Elli O’Rawe, Devon Taylor, Ian White, and Bella Yniguez. “We have 46 percent new swimmers this season and I am thrilled with the great showing from our NTS swimmers at our first swim meet of the season.” Higgins said. Returning NTS swimmer, Kaden Carpenter broke team record from 2008 and 2013 for boys 11-year-old breaststroke at first meet of the season. “This meet was intense and fun” Carpenter said. Swimmer of the meet went to Sarah Oestericher, a high school freshman. “Sarah has exceptional practice ethics that paid off

for her at this meet,” Higgins said. “She placed first in all of her individual events; swam on both ‘A’ relay teams, lead leg on the Medley Relay, and anchoring the Free relay with a very close ‘on the edge of your seat’ finish capturing another first place.” Kam Corbett who started her first full season with NTS, had joined mid-way through last year’s season. She was enthusiastic about the great start for this year. “Swimming in the outdoor pool with great weather was fun, corbett said. “We had great team spirit and had fun cheering each other on. A great first meet.” Team Captains for the 2016-17 swim season are a talented group of student and athletes: McKenzie Gibel, Chris Kanak, Maggie Menoni, and Caroline Ross. The NTS swimmers are very enthusiastic about this season and are working hard to have another championship under their swim caps.

DAILY TOURS

Ancient Skygazers and Modern Calendars From National Aeronautics and Space Administration

So familiar has the calendar become that people tend to forget that it, too, had to be invented. Early farmers needed to know when to plow and sow ahead of rainy seasons, and to time other seasonal activities. Early priests in Babylonia, Egypt, China and other countries, even among the Maya in America, examined therefore the motions of the Sun, Moons and planets across the sky. The Day The basic unit is obviously the day: 24 hours, 1,440 minutes, 86,400 seconds, each second slightly longer than the average heartbeat. The day is defined by the motion of the Sun across the sky, and a convenient benchmark is noon, the time when the Sun is at its highest (i.e. most distant from the horizon) and is also exactly south or north of the observer. The Year The year is the time needed by the Earth for one full orbit around the Sun. At the end of that time, the Earth is back to the same point in its orbit, and the Sun

is therefore back to the same apparent position in the sky. It takes the Earth 365.2422 days to complete its circuit (average solar days), and any calendar whose year differs from this number will gradually wander through the seasons. The Moon The Moon’s orbital period, measured by the stars (“sidereal period”) is 27.321662 days. However, the monthly cycle of the Moon – thin crescent to halfmoon, to full and back to crescent – takes 29.530589 days, because it depends on the position of the Sun in the sky, and that position changes appreciably in the course of each orbit. The different shapes of the Moon represent different angles of illumination, and the appearance of the Moon in the night sky gives a fair idea of where the Sun would be (e. g. the Moon observed in the east before sunrise appears illuminated from below). The duration of the Moon’s cycle (“synodic period”) gave rise to the division of time known as month.
