Wildcats Victorious at Carney Bowl I By Brenda Dye

Carney Park was the perfect location for a football game September 24, 2016, under the bright white lights. Led by Head Coach Jim Davis, who arrived to Naples in August, the Wildcats were pumped and ready to face their rival, the Vicenza Cougars, whose defense had a hard time stopping the Wildcats from scoring. Standing at 6’3” and in his 4th year on the team, senior and co-captain, K.C. Evans scored a 66 yard touchdown and a 10 yard touchdown, both in the second quarter, from passes thrown by senior and co-captain, Tommy Menoni. Terell Staten, another senior and co-captain, scored the 2 point conversion, bringing the Wildcats to a 14-0 score at halftime. The Cougars came out fighting and scored their own touchdown in the 3rd quarter, but their momentum stopped there. After Vicenza had several forced fumbles by an aggressive Naples defense, the Wildcats’ offense, determined to score again, got close enough for senior, Ethan Sheffield to kick a field goal in the fourth quarter, giving Naples the 17-6 victory. After all the handshakes and congratulations, Chris

Kasparek, from MWR Community Recreation, presented the Carney Bowl I trophy to Davis and the rest of the Wildcat team. Davis, who has been coaching since 1991, and has been with DODEA since 2000, encouraged the players to keep striving for excellence.

“I try to remind the players that success is not about being the best, but about doing your best,” Davis said. With a notably improved level of play that the Wildcats have performed so far this season, it’s easy to see that this year’s experienced coaching staff and team of

talented, hard-working student-athletes are hungry to compete and go all the way to Europeans. With a record of 1-2, the Wildcats will travel to Hohenfels, Germany, for a game October 8; and then back to Naples against Aviano for their homecoming October 15.

USNH Naples to Celebrate Customer Service Week October 3-7 By Charlette McInnis USNH Naples

The NSA Naples community is invited to celebrate Customer Service Week at U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Naples October 3-7, 2016. This year’s theme is “Service Champions: Delivering excellent service is only possible with a team of dedicated professionals working together!” Each department has a Customer Relations Representative, an indivi-

dual that receives additional training in customer service to address customers’ needs. Throughout the week, you can learn more about why customer service is so important at USNH Naples. Staff members will be recognized for their excellent customer service skills through the “Seven Days of Customer Service” videos, and on the quarterdeck television monitors. “Excellent customer service and a favorable patient experience builds trust and influences improved clini-

cal outcomes,” USNH Naples Nursing Service Director Capt. D. Ramirez said. The week kicks off with a special lunch menu offered in the galley on October 3, as a thank you to employees and customers. The galley, La Cucina, is located on the ground floor of the hospital and serves lunch daily from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The lunch menu includes the meal, salad bar, beverage and dessert for only $5.55. President Salutes Families of Fallen Service Members From DoD News

President Barack Obama saluted the sacrifices of the mothers and families of America’s fallen service members on September 23, 2016, as he proclaimed September 25 as Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day. The president’s proclamation reads as follows: Since our Nation’s founding, in peace and in war, the values that define our brave men and women in uniform have remained constant: honor, courage, and selflessness. From the deafening sounds of combat to the silence of the sacred hills at Arlington, we remember the countless sacrifices our service members make to preserve the freedoms we too often take for granted. No one understands the true price of these freedoms like our Gold Star families, whose humility, even in time of grief, represents the best of our country. Today, we recognize their sacrifices by listening to their stories, sharing in their pain and pride, and pledging to do all we can to honor them and the loved ones they hold close in their hearts.

CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Doug Carpenter NSA Naples Commanding Officer

For our military community, closing out the month of September means launching in to a new fiscal year. This comes with the usual rush to get many last minute items completed before we start over again with a new budget, new goals, and new opportunities. An FY-17 budget has not been signed in to law yet, but we do have a continuing resolution that will be effective through December 9. Along with closing out FY-16, the end of September also closes out Emergency Preparedness month. The NSA Naples Emergency Management team along with many stakeholders, such as the Red Cross and NEX, focused on increasing awareness, providing education, and reviewing our procedures in case of a crisis. For you who are reading this article, did you have a chance to catch the information? Do you have a kit ready to go? Are you registered in AtHoc for emergency notification? If the answer to any of those questions is no, please contact the NSA Naples Emergency Management Office at DSN 626-3585. If you have been out at night over the past few weeks on Capodichino, you may have noticed a fire occasionally burning near the flight line. These fires are associated with our MAFT (multi-functional aircraft fire trainer) that is being used to train our NSA Naples Fire Department to fight fires at night. Learning the proper techniques to fight and extinguish fires in various lighting and environmental conditions can mean the difference between life and death in an actual emergency. Our fire department is comprised of U.S. civilian, military and Italian firefighters. These professionals are really good at their work, and they stand the watch 24 hours a day, seven days a week providing peace of mind and safety to our community through their rigorous training regime and ever-watchful eyes. I am really proud to have them protecting NSA Naples, and if you see them around the base please give them a shout out! As the days get shorter and the temperatures begin to fall, it is important to consider how this changes our efforts at energy conservation. The longer evenings mean our lights will likely be on a little longer, making it that much more important that we remember to turn them off when not needed. We’ll also soon make the switch from air conditioning to heat, and it’s a good time to think about where to set the thermostat. Please keep energy conservation at the forefront, especially when we are spending taxpayer dollars to heat, cool, or light our homes and offices. Stay safe and have a great weekend

NAVY HISTORY: WASHINGTON NAVY YARD ESTABLISHED From Navy History and Heritage Command

On October 2, 1799, the Washington Navy Yard was established under the direction of Secretary of the Navy Benjamin Stoddert and supervision of Commodore Thomas Tingey. The Washington Navy Yard is the U.S. Navy’s oldest shore establishment, and is now the home of the Chief of Naval Operations and is headquarters for the Naval Historical Center and numerous naval commands. The original boundaries that were established in 1800, along 9th and M Streets Southeast, are still marked by a white brick wall that surrounds the Navy Yard on the north and east sides. The north wall of the yard was built in 1809 along with a guard house. The first years saw the Washington Navy Yard become the Navy’s largest shipbuilding and shipfitting facility, with twenty-two vessels constructed there, ranging from small 70-foot gunboats to the 246-foot steam frigate Minnesota. USS Constitution came to the yard in 1812 to refit and prepare for combat action. During the War of 1812, the Washington Navy Yard was important not only as a support facility, but was a vital strategic link in the defense of the capital city. Following the War of 1812, the Washington Navy Yard never regained its prominence as a shipbuilding activity. The waters of the Anacostia River were too shallow to accommodate larger vessels, and the yard was deemed too inaccessible to the open sea. Thus came a shift to what was to be the character of the yard for more than a century: ordnance and technology. The Civil War again saw the yard become an integral part of the defense of Washington. The famous ironclad Monitor was repaired at the yard after her historic battle with CSS Virginia. Following the Civil War, the yard continued to be the scene of technological advances. In

1886, the yard was designated the manufacturing center for all ordnance in the Navy. Ordnance production continued as the yard manufactured armament for the Great White Fleet and the World War I Navy. The 14-inch naval railway guns used in France during World War I were manufactured at the yard. In 1927 the Naval School of Diving and Salvage – the world’s premier deep sea and scuba diving school – was established. Thousands of air and mixed-gas divers, diving medical technicians, master divers and diving officers were trained there until 1980, when the school moved to Panama City, Florida. By World War II, the yard was the largest naval ordnance plant in the world. The weapons designed and built there were used in every war in which the United States fought until the 1960s. In December 1945 the Navy Yard was renamed the U.S. Naval Gun Factory. Ordnance work continued for some years after World War II until finally phased out in 1961. Three years later, on July 1, 1964, the activity was redesignated the Washington Navy Yard. The deserted factory buildings began to be converted to office use. Today the Navy Yard serves as headquarters, Naval District Washington, and houses numerous support activities for the fleet and aviation communities. The Naval Historical Center is housed in a complex of buildings known as the Dudley Knox Center for Naval History. After more than two centuries, the Washington Navy Yard continues to serve the Navy and the nation.

Cover art of the first new history book of the Washington Navy Yard in 50 years, The Washington Navy Yard, An Illustrated History, by Edward J. Marolda. The book was written for the 200th Anniversary of the Navy Yard in 1999 and has been made available to the general public from the Government Printing Office. U.S. Navy graphic.

SPOTLIGHT: HM3 SEAN PIENTAK

Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Sean Pientak, from Detroit, Michigan, reported to U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Naples in April 2016. Immediately upon reporting onboard, Pientak hit the ground running as he accepted the responsibility of Assistant Lead Petty Officer for the Facilities Management Department. A key enabler, he supports the maintenance and operation of not just any one department, but the hospital as a whole. Pientak’s dedication and pride in his duties is beyond reproach, and sets him a cut above his peers. Always seeking responsibility, he serves as the departmental training representative, departmental safety representative, Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) instructor, and Emergency Medical Technician-Basic instructor at USNH Naples. Although his true passion is in motorcycles, you will hardly find Pientak idle during his off time as he is traveling to different countries and experiencing other cultures throughout Europe. With a short term goal of advancing to Petty Officer Second Class, Pientak aims to continually mentor junior Sailors by setting the example. “I’ve had the privilege of serving with some incredible people and have done some pretty cool things,” Pientak said. “What people sometimes fail to realize is work won’t always be glamorous. That’s fine. If it was, it wouldn’t be called work. I think it’s important to take pride in whatever it is you do and represent both names on your blouse honorably. Tough times don’t last, tough people do.”

Special Courts Martial for August 2016 From Navy Office of Information

At a Special Courts Martial in Naples, Navy Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Julio C. Garcia was tried for numerous offenses to include conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline (offering to show others pornographic images of Sailors). On August 3, 2016, the panel of members returned a verdict of guilty for conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline and, on August 4, 2016, sentenced the accused to forfeit $672 pay per month for one month and restriction for 30 days.

October marks Energy Action Month. This month is designed to promote energy- and water-conservation practices throughout the Federal government. The goal is to not only raise awareness but also take action by showing the Federal government will play an important role as the nation shifts toward more clean energy. Federal employees have the power to make the transition to clean energy a reality. The Navy and Marine Corps recognize Energy Action Month as an opportunity to reinforce how critical energy is to accomplishing our mission, and to encourage Sailors and Marines to look for ways to optimize their energy use to boost warfighting capabilities. This Year’s theme focuses on power and presence. These capabilities are fundamental to achieving the Navy and Marine Corps’ mission to ensure stability, deter potential adversaries, and present options in times of crisis, and they depend on access to secure and reliable energy.

Naples Middle High School JROTC Welcome Back Picnic From the Naples Middle High School JROTC Unit Cadets

On September 14, 2016, the Naples Middle High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Unit held its Welcome Back Picnic at the high school. The yearly tradition for the cadets was well-attended and made possible through generous donations from volunteer parents who prepared and shared incredible food. Among the teachers and staff present, Laura Moreno, one of the school’s Spanish teachers and the 10th Grade Class Sponsor, noted that the students were smiling a lot. “Any fun activity that brings together parents, teachers, staff and students, supports our goal to foster school spirit,” Moreno said. “The students look and sound happy. It’s awesome!” General guidance for the picnic had been provided several days earlier by instructors who then stepped out of the way to enable student-only final planning and execution. “Our style is to let them do it” remarked one of the instructors. “No coaching on game days. We are not here to put on perfect shows, we are here to teach them about leadership and character; to develop responsible young citizens. Allowing students to run the activities with minimal interven-

tion is a great way to generate the type of results we are looking for. We provide significant upfront guidance, then slowly stepaway and observe closely. We jump back-in and drive the learning process during debriefs. Then we do it all again for the next event.” Most of the unit’s senior leaders had not practiced public speaking since the change of command last May and although some of the cadets had spent part of their summer at leadership academies in Newport, Rhode Island and in Grafenwoehr, Germany, they were all a bit rusty. Freshmen like Cadet Seaman Recruit Jade Sawyer were about to perform military drill movements in front of a crowd for the first time. “It is easy to get-away with a messed-up ‘about face’ when the crowd has no idea about what is going on,” Sawyer said. 3“But these parents all know about the military, and they know a good ‘about face’ from a bad one. There is some pressure to get it right.” The JROTC instructors would be watching closely, ready to pick-up details that would be recorded and shared with students later; but other than standing ready to address any issues related to safety, no corrections would be made. Execution day belonged to the cadets. Just prior to “go time,” athletes started

rolling-in from late afternoon practice including the Unit’s Commanding Officer, Cadet Lieutenant Commander Frank Mastroianni, who was counting on his team of seniors to have the event under control. The Executive Officer Cadet Lt. Anna Gilfoy, was ready to go and introduced the new JROTC Unit senior staff including Cadet Senior Chief Caleb Hood (N1 - Admin), Cadet Ens. Valerie Gilfoy (N3 - Operations), Cadet Ens. Joy Jack (N4 - Logistics), and Cadet Ens. Andrew Smith (N5 - Plans). Mastroianni seemed to make new friends

with his address which was very brief and included a reference to Julius Caesar. “He was known for great lengthy speeches, but he was also killed by his senate, Mastroianni said. “I think I will keep it short.” After staff introductions, freshmen were officially welcomed into the unit and awarded their J-Bars, a collar device that distinguishes a JROTC Cadet. Cadet games followed the formal portion of the afternoon; second platoon dominated and earned the right the chow line first.

PRESIDENT SALUTES GOLD STAR FAMILIES

from page 1 Through unspeakable sorrow, our Gold Star families suffer from loss that can never be restored – pain that can never truly be healed. It is because of their selfless character and unfailing grace that Americans can come home each day, gather with family and friends, and live in peace and security. And though the debt our fallen soldiers and their families pay is one we can never fully pay back, we must continue to support our veterans when they come home and stand by our military families who endure unthinkable loss. We must maintain the sacred covenant we share with our veterans by ensuring they have the care and benefits they deserve, and as citizens, we must all work to lift each other up in a manner that is worthy of those who laid down their lives to protect the land and freedoms we cherish. Less than one percent of our Nation wear the uniform, but all of us have an obligation to acknowledge the losses endured by Gold Star Mothers and Families and to fill the painful absence of their loved ones with our profound gratitude. We must strive to support these families – not just with words, but with actions – by being there every day for the parents, spouses, and children who feel the weight of their loss. On this day of remembrance, may we carry for-

ward the work of those who gave their last full measure of devotion and vow to keep their memories burning bright in our hearts. And may we lift up their families, who have steadfastly supported their mission through immeasurable heartbreak, by remaining a Nation worthy of their sacrifice. The Congress, by Senate Joint Resolution 115 of June 23, 1936 (49 Stat. 1985 as amended), has designated the last Sunday in September as “Gold Star Mother’s Day.”

“Today, we recognize their sacrifices by listening to their stories, sharing in their pain and pride, and pledging to do all we can to honor them and the loved ones they hold close in their hearts.”

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim September 25, 2016, as Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day. I call upon all Government officials to display the flag of the United States over Government buildings on this special day. I also encourage the American people to display the flag and hold appropriate ceremonies as a public expression of our Nation’s gratitude and respect for our Gold Star Mothers and Families.

President Barack Obama

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-third day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand sixteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-first.

Harvesting October Treats in Campania By Lou Freed

Grape harvests and wine fests are still on this month’s Campanian calendar; however, a number of the region’s villages are now gearing up to kick off their mushroom, chestnut and black truffle celebrations. Whether or not you’re a foodie, consider venturing into the countryside for these flavorful nature’s bounty big-to-do’s along with opportunities to view fall foliage as well as to soak in some cool, refreshing and energy-boosting air. In Naples, classical concerts are back in full force to be followed by the opening of the Autumn Dance season toward the end of month. Wherever your interests may take you, the events below could be a point of departure to discover other areas promoted through online resources or local tourist boards. Wine Fests and Tastings Nusco (Avellino province) – Oct. 1-2 This weekend, experience the

Primarily prized for their unique flavor, the crop can sell for thousands of dollars per pound, making them “among the most expensive edible mushrooms on the planet,” according to culinary mavens. Just a tiny grating over the top of a pasta dish or risotto brings out its exquisite gusto. Also, when compared to white truffles, the aroma of black of truffles intensify rather than diminish when heated up. On the slated dates, the town will simultaneously celebrate its rich harvest of chestnuts, affording convenience to those

Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C. From the National Park Service

The building that is now Ford’s Theatre dates all the way back to 1834, when it was opened as the First Baptist Church of Washington, D.C. Well-known theater entrepreneur and manager John T. Ford purchased the church in 1861 and transformed it into a theatre. During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln attended more than a dozen shows there between 1863 and April 14, 1865. On April 9, 1865, Gen. Robert E. Lee, commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, commander of the Union Army, at Appomattox, Virginia. Five days later, on April 14, President Lincoln was watching a play, “Our American Cousin” at the theater, when Confederate sympathizer and actor John Wilkes Booth snuck into

Lincoln’s box seat and shot the president in the back of the head. Lincoln died the next morning. Following Lincoln’s death, the government appropriated the theatre, with Congress paying Ford $88,000 in compensation. The National Park Service acquired Ford’s Theatre in 1933, and in 1968, it was restored to its 1865 appearance and reopened as a working theatre and historic site. Four decades later the theater was renovated again and reopened on February 12, 2009, the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth. This theatre is open each day from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (except for Christmas and performance nights). It is managed by the National Park Service (NPS), a bureau of the United States Department of the Interior. More than a million people visit the historic theater each year.
