national student drama festival CODE OF PRACTICE Festivalgoers of all ages should treat all young people equally, with respect and dignity, be aware that participants include both adults and young people, be aware that NSDF has a Young Person Protection Officer (Chris Wootton) who can be contacted at any time during the festival on 07780 700348 or chrisw@nsdf.org.uk. Be aware that NSDF staff are required to adhere to this policy which is in place to protect participants against potential harm and should feel confident in reporting any concerns or incidents immediately: if possible seek out NSDF’s Young Person Protection Officer to pass on the information confidentially. This is for the protection of potentially vulnerable individual(s). Any NSDF staff member or volunteer should be able to direct you appropriately. If this is not possible, pass the information to any NSDF staff member or volunteer or call 999 in the case of genuine emergency.

festivalpatron Welcome back to Scarborough! And welcome, too, to Michael Brazier, NSDF’s new Director and CEO. I am certain he’s keen to develop the Festival’s momentum and development achieved over the past six years by Holly Kendrick. I know you will join with me in wishing Michael every success. Traditionally I tend to write these messages a week or two in advance of the Festival generally when Scarborough is being lashed by fierce North Sea winds and when, to paraphrase Noel Coward slightly, everyone apart from mad dogs and native Scarborians tends to huddle for cover and wait for Spring and the NSDF to arrive. This year for the theatre here in common with most professional regional theatres, (please forgive the cliché) the cold wind is blowing particularly icily. Dwindling funding from government, both local and national, is resulting in severely reduced programming and staffing and in certain instances building closures. Speaking as someone who has dedicated his life to the regional cause, I believe these are the lifeblood of this country’s theatrical future. They have been the place where those seeking to enter the professional theatre traditionally started (or in my own case ended!) their careers. In Scarborough’s case, a company formed to tackle an extensive repertoire of largely but not entirely newly commissioned work enabling newcomers to work alongside more experienced hands, actors, directors, technicians or stage managers. Ask any seasoned professional actor where they learnt most. Drama school? Rarely. Directors? Occasionally. Working alongside other actors who knew what they were doing? Almost invariably. Long live company theatre. It’s the one place where new formed talent, like your own, can be nurtured and sheltered from the cold. Have a great Festival! I feel certain you will. Alan Ayckbourn 2013

noëlcoward

Noël in top hat and tails. 1916. Photographer unknown.

As he matured, Noël found intermittent success as a juvenile lead. But like most young actors he spent much of his time looking for a job. Here, despite his dapper appearance, he was once again unemployed and in search of a drawing room to inhabit. From the Geoffrey Johnson collection.

Clear Head Clear Head is an all male theatre company based at The Brit School for Performing Arts. Along with one director and one assistant director, we have worked closely with the CALM organisation (Campaign Against Living Miserably). Incorporating a devised approach, as well as using verbatim and physical theatre, we explore the various issues that men face in today’s society. We allow accidents to happen in the rehearsal room to inspire our pieces. In London, suicide is the biggest single killer of young men. Through Theatre, we aspire to raise awareness and to get people talking in the hope to change this statistic. www.thecalmzone.net

technicaldirector It is my pleasure to have taken on the role as Technical Director of the National Student Drama Festival. I have joined a well established and hugely dedicated team of Technical Advisors made up of industry professionals and educators each with a passion for live performance and its technical demands. The coming week will require a disciplined and hard working team of student technicians, each coming to NSDF for different reasons and from different backgrounds. The common goal is working to configure three pre-existing venues and to construct (from scratch) another three venues to support the festival’s programme of shows. This year there are sixty student technicians, seven technical advisors, three heads of department (lighting, sound and stage) and myself. As well as putting the venues together, we provide all the technical support and operation of the incoming student shows. It is our aim to recreate and reproduce the shows that were selected for NSDF as true to their original settings as possible. There is a large programme of technical workshops from some of the industry’s finest and plenty of opportunity to try out some of the best equipment available on the market today. I’d like to say thank you to all the individual supporters and company sponsors who have given freely of their time and equipment to help create an exciting, educational and sociable experience for the technical students. David Graham Technical Director Stage Electrics is a specialist installer, systems integrator, reseller, and hire company offering a wide range of theatrical equipment and services tailored to suit the needs the entertainment industry.

23.15 SUN 24 MARCH IN THE GRAND HALL A Paines Plough, Birmingham Repertory Theatre and Roundhouse Production, in association with NSDF and Latitude Festival I’m making a decision. I’m changing things. This is it. Three old friends. One remarkable day. For Ted, Danny and Charlotte, it’s time to seize control. Make a difference. Change things. This is it. A day glo trip through the parks and raves and cafes of South London, where life is what you make it. The rapid fire words of Kate Tempest paint a picture of lives less ordinary in an unforgiving world, sound-tracked by an exhilarating score. A play about life, life and losing your mind.
