T
he Junior Enlisted Association (JEA) and the Coalition for Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) provided junior enlisted Sailors and Marines with a chance to get out of the barracks and have a free meal with games and fellowship, July 4. “The purpose of the JEA is to promote camaraderie and morale for the junior Sailors and Marines,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Curtis Dryman, JEA president. “We really just want the young Sailors to feel like they have a voice in the grand scheme of things.” The JEA and CSADD joined together and hosted a 4th of July barbeque at the Marine Hill Barracks to provide a safe environment for Sailors and Marines to start off the long weekend with hamburgers, chicken, hotdogs and even fresh fish caught at Guantanamo Bay. “We wanted to do a big event just for the junior Sailors and Marines to show them that the hard work and dedication they provide everyday doesn’t go unrecognized,”
said Dryman. “A lot of times this is the first duty station for the junior enlisted and it is easy for them to feel like they just get lost in the mix.” The festivities began around 11 a.m. with the burgers being prepared and cornhole brackets being formed. Volunteers came out to help prepare over 100 burgers, 20 pounds of chicken, and 10 pounds of fish. “We began fundraising in January for this event and really wanted it to be something special,” said Dryman. “We have done lots of different fundraisers like breakfast in bed and a Day at the Bay.” At around 12 p.m. people began to show up and celebrate the nation’s birthday with food and games. “The turnout was amazing, we had anywhere from 75 to 100 personnel show up and so many people volunteered to help,” said Dryman. “I couldn’t have done this by myself and want to thank every one of the junior Sailors and Marines for attending.”

Make Summer Travel Safe
MILLINGTON, Tenn. (NNS) -- Summer is the perfect time to gather up your family or friends and take a road trip. With amusement parks, beaches, and family reunions happening all over the country, more families are planning to buckle up and hit the road, Navy leaders said June 26. “Although the road trip is half the fun, making it to your destination safely should always be the first priority,” said Dorice Favorite, director of the Navy Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention (NADAP) Office. In keeping with the Navy’s recently launched “Keep What You’ve Earned” campaign, NADAP urges Sailors to drink responsibly throughout the year- you’ve earned it, don’t waste it. This summer, consider the following: *While on vacation, you may be traveling an unfamiliar route, hauling a boat or camper, along with the possible distraction of pets and children in the car. Adding alcohol to the mix puts the lives of the driver and everyone in the car, as well as other people on the road, at risk. *Whether you’re on the road or outdoors, summer temperatures plus alcohol can equal trouble. Hot summer days cause fluid loss through perspiration, while alcohol causes fluid loss through increased urination. Together, they can quickly
lead to dehydration or heat stroke. *At parties, make at least every other drink a nonalcoholic one. If you’re the host, be sure to provide plenty of cold, refreshing nonalcoholic drinks to keep your guests well hydrated. If you know you’ll be driving, stay away from alcohol. And remember, there’s no shame in taking a cab or sleeping on a friend’s couch if you feel at all unsure if you should be driving. *Most importantly - do not drink and drive. The rate of alcohol-related traffic fatalities increases significantly from Memorial Day to Labor Day. “The summer holidays are some of the most dangerous times of the year to be on the road. Our Sailors have worked hard and deserve to enjoy their summer in a safe way,” said Favorite. “Have fun with family and friends, but be smart if you choose to drink.” For more information and to help promote responsible drinking this summer within your command, you can access materials and resources from NADAP’s recently launched campaign, Keep What You’ve Earned, available at www.nadap. navy.mil. Materials include Sailor fact sheets, posters and video. For more news from Navy Personnel Command, visit www. navy.mil/local/npc/.

Vice Chief to Fleet Leaders: Preventing Sexual Assault Begins With You From Vice Chief of Naval Operations Public Affairs
WASHINGTON (NNS) -- In a message to flag officers, commanding officers, and officers in charge, Vice Chief of Naval Operations (VCNO) Adm. Mark Ferguson highlighted Navy-wide accountability for sexual assault July 8. The message from Adm. Mark Ferguson explains the Navy will soon announce policies and programs to address sexual assault across the fleet and sets the expectation Navy leadership will do everything they can to prevent the crime. “Sexual assault ruins lives, divides teams, and erodes trust. As leaders, we must provide our Sailors a responsible, professional, and safe environment in which to work and live,” said Ferguson in the message. Ferguson told fleet leaders that preventing the crime of sexual assault starts with command climate. They must create atmospheres of trust and confidence that ensure Sailors can report sexual assault or sexual harassment without fear of retribution or retaliation. He also stressed that once victims report crimes, it is the responsibility of the chain of command to ensure victims receive the appropriate level of care and support. Command climate has a role in not only reassuring victims, but in sending a message that committing sexual assault will not be tolerated. “We must reaffirm our commitment to our shipmates,
and our actions must make clear to potential perpetrators of this crime that they will be held appropriately accountable,” Ferguson said. Telling leaders “this is our issue to solve,” he reminded them they are accountable for -- ensuring all Sailors are treated with dignity and respect, -- incorporating sexual assault prevention measures into their commands, -- providing responsive victim support, -- ensuring all unrestricted sexual assault allegations are promptly reported to NCIS and investigated, and -- holding offenders appropriately accountable. In the near future, the Navy will announce additional policies and programs to address sexual assault, including a continued effort highlight the responsible use of alcohol. The goal of these programs is to promote safe living and working environments across the Navy. Get more information and resources to combat sexual assault at www.sapr.navy.mil. Sexual assault affects Navy readiness, and the Navy is committed to preventing sexual assault. Reduce Administrative Distractions Website Launches By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class (SW/AW) Nathan Laird, Defense Media Activity
FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md (NNS) -- The Chief of Naval Operations’ Reduce Administrative Distractions (RAD) Team website launched July 1, and the effort is underway to get direct input from Sailors on how the Fleet can streamline or eliminate administrative processes to allow more time to focus on mission readiness. The interactive RAD website provides all ranks, active, Reserve and Navy civilians with a platform to voice their concerns about administrative tasks, procedures, instructions and training, and propose solutions to fix these issues. It will function much like a social media interface, allowing users to comment and vote on posts. The collected data can be analyzed by many different variables, from what is bothering commanding officers to what junior Sailors are concerned with. The site has generated several responses on a wide variety of topics including anti-terrorism force protection, quality assurance, Navy Knowledge Online and electronic routing. IdeaScale rewards users with merit badges based on their activity on the site.
Data collection via the RAD website is phase one of the multi-phase approach to streamline or eliminate administrative processes in the fleet and is slated for completion July 31. In phase two, the collected data will be analyzed and the team will make proposals to the “owner” of the administrative program for automation, elimination, reduction or other action by August 30. Phase three will be the action phase, allowing execution of the reduction measures and will wrap up Sept. 30. Upon completion of the three phases, the program will promulgate the progress to date, monitor the impact and plan for the next cycle. For more information, or to give feedback, visit the RAD website at http://navyrad.ideascale.com/

QUALITY OF LIFE BOARD QOL@GTMO.NAVY.MIL Q. Will there be a Drug Education for Youth (DEFY) camp this summer? A. Provided by Security Department: Yes! The camp will be held August 19-23 at the Community Center. This is a five day FREE camp for youth ages 9-12. For more information contact IT1 Wilson at taiwain. wilson@gtmo.navy.mil or 4972. Q. I think it’s a great idea to post on the roller the Heat Index Flag Conditions and what it means. However I do not know where the flag is currently being flown. Is it possible to put the flag somewhere on Sherman Avenue? Maybe Cooper Field? Or somewhere where there is high traffic? A. Provided by CMC Cramer: A flag pole has been installed on Sherman near the beach advisory sign. Every day we will have the heat flag flying to indicate the heat advisory. Q. I would like to know why Roger’s Mon, Wed, Fri power training class is being cancelled and without any notice. This class is consistently full to the point where we typically run out of weights. Not everyone is a gym rat and for many of us it gives us the ability to get a full body workout with weights. I have been taking the class for 3 months and have had unbelievable results. You are doing the island a great disservice by canceling this class and I am certain that my complaint will not be the only one you receive. A. Provided by MWR Director: We hear you! We will find a workaround. Due to Human Resources issues, unfortunately I can’t share with you what situation caused it, however please know that it could not be avoided in the short term. We will definitely still have the class on Mondays and Thursdays at 1630, the regular (not beginners) Power Training class starting today. More to follow.
