This April is the 13th Annual Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM), which highlights the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) Program. The Department of Defense (DoD) is continuing the prevention drumbeat with the 2017 SAAPM campaign theme and Navy tagline: “Protecting Our People Protects Our Mission: The Difference Starts With You. Step Up and Step In to Stop Sexual Assault.” This theme places emphasis on the critical role that everyone plays in preventing sexual assault. SAAPM is an opportunity to highlight our commitment to the SAPR Program and offers a variety of innovative ways to establish prevention practices. SAAPM has become a great way of sending the awareness and prevention message as one voice across the fleet. SAPR victim advocates are vital to the SAPR Program because they are the primary means of ongoing support to the victim. They inform the victim of their reporting options and their resources such as counseling and legal services. They are on call to respond to a victim 24 hours a day, 7 days a week upon receipt of a report of a sexual assault. Having a victim advocate by a victim’s side during their time of need can make all the difference in the world. A victim is never alone and will always know what it going on with their case. The victim advocate will be there for continual follow up and to ensure the safety and well-being of that victim. Victim advocates must complete the 40-hour SAPR Victim Advocate Training and background checks. Once the training is completed, they must submit their Department of Defense Sexual Assault Advocate Certification Program (D-SAACP) Application to the National Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA) board for approval. Once certified, Victim Advocates must maintain 32
hours of continuing education units. SAAPM provides a great opportunity to raise awareness and promote the prevention of sexual assault during special events throughout the month. This year will see an increased line up of activities and special events to engage SAAPM participants. At Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, SAAPM planned events include the 2nd Annual SAPR Zumba, Pure Praxis Edutainment, and a Chalk HeART event. The SAPR Zumba event occurred April 7 at the Denich Gym. This event celebrated healthy relationships while wearing the color teal. Team Esto presented an energizing playlist and motivated more than 45 participants for an hour of choreographed moves. Pure Praxis Edutainment was a high energy, interactive workshop facilitating proactive responses to difficult social interactions. They had four presentations on April 18-19 at the Windjammer Ballroom. All 18 and older were welcome to attend. The Chalk HeART event on April 23 at the Navy Exchange (NEX) Atrium is a collaboration of SAAPM and Child Abuse Awareness Month (CAAM). The theme of the event is “Coloring Relationships with Respect.” Participants will receive a box of sidewalk chalk and space in front of the NEX. Participants are recommended to register at the Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC). Trophies will be provided for different categories. For more information on SAAPM events and activities or becoming a SAPR Victim Advocate at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, please contact Jennifer Walker or Gloria Bryant at 4141.

W. T. Sampson Elementary starts a new Chapter by MC2 John Philip Wagner, Jr.

Artist Rendering of New W. T. Sampson School
fter an extended Spring break, Naval Station Guantanamo Bay (NSGB) elementary school students start their first day back to school at their new classrooms on the main campus of W. T. Sampson (WTS). WTS elementary opened its doors August 25, 1975 and had its official dedication in October of the same year with more than 700 kindergarten through sixth graders. “I was a student at the elementary on several separate occasions at first in 93-94 again in 99-2001,” said Brandi Lasseter, WTS alumni. “I then graduated from the high school in 2007.” According to Lasseter, who currently has a daughter in kindergarten at the school now, there were few differences from when she was a student. “When I was there, classrooms like the music and art classes were different from today,” said Lasseter. “The building itself looks the same and the cafeteria is the same as I remember, but there are more plants and gardens.” “I am really excited to have my daughter going to school at Sampson,” said Lasseter. “When she started, I put a power point slide with her in her new shirt ‘second generation Sampson Shark.’ I was excited, its unique.” The school closed its doors in late March during
spring break and, as of April 18, the school has relinquished ownership of the building to the construction contractor. Before the students left, they were given the opportunity to say goodbye to the old school by decorating the interior and exterior with paintings and pictures on the walls and floors of the building. “I think about my class and how much we would have loved saying goodbye to the old building by drawing and painting the walls,” said Lasseter. “I think it was a very nice goodbye for the students to the school and a fun day for the students. According to Veronica Finney, W.T. Sampson assistant principal, It’s a little sad to say good bye to the old building. The new school building will be a state of the art building and will be built to withstand tropical storm winds up to approximately 143 mph winds. “The new building, when it’s completed, will be a 21st century layout that allows the classrooms or neighborhoods to be interconnected with flexible walls so the classes can collaborate,” said Finney. “I’m excited about the opportunities.” “The projected completion date is August of 2019, at a cost of approx. 74 million dollars,” said Emillio Garza, W. T. Sampson principal. “We are excited to be one W. T. Sampson school.”
