he top officer responsible for U.S. Navy ships, aircraft and submarines operating in the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) area of focus and the Foreign Policy Advisor to the Chief of Naval Operations visited Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Feb. 27-28. Rear Adm. Sinclair Harris, Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command and U.S. 4th Fleet (COMUSNAVSO/ C4F) and Ambassador Asif Chaudhry, Foreign Policy Advisor to the Chief of Naval Operations toured the various facilities aboard the installation. “This is the only naval base in the fourth fleet area of operation,” said Harris. “The

importance of this base is often overlooked. It is a key strategic point and its location is critical.” During the visit, Harris and Chaudhry received a tour and briefing on the Naval Station migration operations mission. The Naval Station supports the Department of Homeland Security in U.S. migrant operations to help care for displaced migrants from the surrounding area. During a refugee crises between 1994 and early 1996, more than 58,000 Haitian and Cuban refugees transited the base. Harris and Chaudhry also toured the Naval Station’s fence line that divides the installation from Cuba proper. The fence line is guarded by Marines from Marine Security Forces Company Guantanamo Bay. During their visit they also received a windshield tour of JTF and various command briefs. “Being that this was my first visit to the base, it was truly eye opening. I am amazed at how complex some of the missions are here, whether it is the migrant operations, the JTF or the Marines along the fence line,” said Chaudhry. “You undoubtedly have to overcome some unique challenges to support those critical missions, but I can certainly see that everyone comes together to get it done.

CNP Responds to Sailors’ Questions in Worldwide All Hands Call

Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Elliott Fabrizio

The Chief of Naval Personnel (CNP) talked with Sailors around the world in an All Hands Call, broadcast from the Defense Media Activity at Ft. Meade, Md., March 5. Vice Adm. Bill Moran, CNP, and Fleet Master Chief for Manpower, Personnel, Training and Education (MPT&E) April Beldo, updated Sailors on Navy subjects including pay, the Career Intermission Pilot Program (CIPP), advancement and Tuition Assistance (TA). “Fleet and I are always interested in hearing what Sailors are hearing in the Fleet and what questions they have,” said Moran. “This gives us the opportunity to give them the right information and beat back any bad information that is circulating.” Sailors asked live questions via satellite, telephone and social media. The Secretary of the Navy approved raises to Career Sea Pay allowance and a Sailor from San Diego asked via satellite when the increases would show up in Sailors’ paychecks. “We think within the next 60 days we’re going to start improving the pay of anybody on Career Sea Pay today,” said Moran. Via telephone, a Sailor from USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) asked if the Navy had plans to fully adopt the Career Intermission Pilot Program. “The answer is absolutely,” said Moran. “The results we’ve gotten from this program have been very positive. People have been able to go out and get a college degree, start a family, or start another job and have come back into the Navy and picked up right where they left off.” He added that the Navy is seeking congressional permission next year to remove the ‘pilot’ moniker and institutionalize it across the Navy.

Sailors aware of plans to change the advancement process had several questions about the details, such as removing the point value of Good Conduct Medals and the timeline. “The things that we are focusing on is evaluations, performance and the advancement score,” said Beldo. “Right now we are not changing the points you are given for awards.” Moran added, “There’s a lot being talked about and discussed with advancement exams and I think it’s important for Sailors to know that while we’re talking about it, nothing is being implemented in this March cycle. It’s more likely to be a year from now that you’ll see these changes take place, and we will communicate that to all of you.” From in-studio, a Sailor had a question about the TA program. “The Navy has been 100 percent on TA for the longest time, and even when the other branches of service dropped TA, the Navy kept it at 100 percent; but, I’ve heard talk of them possibly going down to 75 percent-Have you heard anything about that?” asked Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Xander Gamble. TA is funded at 100 percent through fiscal year 2014, but Beldo confirmed that Navy TA may see a 25 percent contribution from Sailors in the next fiscal year. “We believe if there is an investment in there from the Sailor, they will be more committed,” said Beldo. “I think it will still be a good deal for Sailors.” CNP also busted several rumors that Sailors had heard in the fleet. He said there are no plans to increase the length of boot camp, the Navy is not eliminating the Command Advancement Program (CAP) and there are no current plans to add advancement points for warfare pins or fitness exams.

Members of the U.S. Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay’s Junior Enlisted Association (JEA) created a “Before I Die..” wall behind the hospital’s junior enlisted barracks. It was unveiled Saturday, March 1. It is the first such wall at U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay.

aval Station (NS) Guantanamo Bay’s Religious Ministries Team hosted speaker and author Dr. Steve Wilke, March 5-6. Dr. Stephen Wilke is Principal at LEADon.Inc, a company that equips organizations with the tools necessary to improve performance through leadership development. A gifted trainer, he is also the author of several books including; The Leading Edge: 9 Strategies for Improving Internal and Intentional Leadership. Through the course of his visit Wilke gave several presentations on “Leading the Generations” and “Developing and Maintaining High Performance Teams.” “My wife and I decided to come down here to give back to the people who make our jobs possible,” said Wilke. “We wanted to show our support in any way that we could and what better way than getting to give these classes.” In his “Leading the Generations” lecture Wilke covered some of the struggles that leaders in the military and corporate world face.

“It is estimated that there are three generations in the work place or the military right now,” said Wilke. “The Baby Boomers, Generation X, and the Millennials. The key to being a successful leader is knowing how to manage and communicate with all three.” During the “Developing and Maintaining High Performance Teams” lecture he discussed the steps of how to build and maintain a top performance level. “One of the keys to being a part of a high performance team is to realize that great teams are constantly evolving and changing, they are never static,” said Wilke. “In order to develop one of those teams you need to have a clear list of goals and have a list of what you are going to do in order to achieve those goals no matter how big or small they are.” Wilke has spoken and coached numerous fortune 500 companies and many upstart businesses as well. “My strategies are definitely geared more towards corporate America,” said Wilke. “They definitely can apply to the military setting and anyone who wishes to build a successful team.”

Author and International Speaker addresses GTMO Couples Kelly Wirfel

NAVSTA Public Affairs Officer

N

aval Station Guantanamo Bay’s Religious Ministries team hosted bestselling author and international speaker, Mr. Gary Thomas, March 5-7. Thomas uses his talents as a speaker and author to bring people closer to Christ and closer to others. His primary objectives are to help people; embrace the unique way that you interact with God, partner in the spiritual growth and character formation of their spouse, build a closer, grace-based family and enjoy God with a new sense of freedom and delight. While aboard NS Guantanamo Bay, Thomas gave two different lectures; The Sacred Marriage and Sexual Saints. His Sacred Marriage lecture was based off his book, Sacred Marriage, which has sold over 600,000 copies. During his lecture he opened by talking about some of the challenges married couples face. “We are challenged far more as a married person than a single person. When you are married suddenly you are in a relationship where you can’t run,” said Thomas. “The Bible promises that we will stumble in many ways but if couples have the heart to make it work they can have a fulfilling marriage. It is not about the ““how

to”” make a marriage work, it is whether you have the ““heart to.”” Thomas continued to talk about how relationships are meant to deepen individual’s relationship with God rather than to make people happy and that couples need to be ordered to God first, and each other second. “Being married and in a relationship is not about being loved. We are already deeply loved by God,” said Thomas. “We need to seek God first and then we will learn how to love and freely give that love.” The following evening Thomas lectured on Sexual Saints in which he talked to couples about the importance of intimacy in a relationship and how to develop long term intimacy. “Coming to Guantanamo Bay has been an awesome experience for my wife Lisa and I,” said Thomas. “When Chaplain Miller contacted me and asked me to come here to speak, the only question was when we could find a spot in our schedule, not if. We are so grateful for the sacrifice the men and women serving in the military make, this is just one way we could give back and say thank you.”

M

arch is National Nutrition Month: Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right!

“Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right” is the theme for National Nutrition Month® 2014. There are many ways to enjoy greattasting food without forfeiting nutrition. Here are a few tips to get you started: Eat Breakfast There’s no better way to start your morning than with a healthy breakfast. Include lean protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Drink More Water Our bodies depend on water to regulate temperature, transport nutrients and oxygen to cells, carry away waste products and more. For generally healthy people, the Dietary Reference Intakes from the Institute of Medicine recommend a total daily beverage intake of 13 cups for men and 9 cups for women. Make Half Your Plate Fruits and Vegetables Fruits and veggies add color, flavor and texture plus vitamins, minerals and fiber to your plate. Make 2 cups of fruit and 2 ½ cups of vegetables your daily goal. Don’t let winter stop you from enjoying produce, frozen and canned are great alternatives if you can’t find fresh produce. Watch Portion Sizes Get out the measuring cups and see how close your portions are to the recommended serving size. Using smaller plates, bowls and glasses can help you keep portions under control. Use half your plate for fruits and vegetables and the other half for grains and lean meat, poultry, seafood or beans. If you have health or nutrition concerns, please contact the Primary Care Clinic at U.S. Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay and speak with a Medical Home Port team member for questions/information. If you have a specific issue to discuss, please feel free to make an appointment with your Primary Care Provider.
