W.T. Sampson Students Hold Mock Trial

tudents from W.T. Sampson High School participated in a mock court trial held at the Naval Station Guantanamo Bay Courthouse, May 29. The students had been working on the trial for over six weeks preparing opening statements, questions for witnesses, gathering evidence and preparing a closing statement. “They have all worked tremendously hard on this trial and have made pretty amazing progress for the short time they have had,” said Lt. Gregory Dixon, Legal Assistance Attorney for Region Legal Service Office Southeast. “They were able to develop skills in six weeks that law students take a year of class to work on.” The trial was based on a fictitious robbery of a gold necklace involving a Boatswains Mate 3rd Class Tony Mcgruber (played by Cesar Chavez) and a Ms. Paulina Dodd (played by Summer McGouey). “This was a really fun opportunity,” said Terrance Singleton Navarro, the judge in the case. “I don’t think a lot of schools in the states get the opportunity to go into an actual courtroom and have a trial.”

The trial began with opening statements from both the Prosecution and Defense teams followed by questioning of key witnesses and presentation of evidence to the jury which was made up of parents and members of the GTMO community. “Pulling out details from the evidence was very challenging,” said Isaiah Lezama, a member of the defense team. “We had to form all of our own questions from what we could gather from the evidence and that was a lot of fun.” Following the examination and cross examination of the witnesses and closing statements the judge explained to the jury what their duties would be in deciding the outcome of the case. After a brief deliberation the jury found the defendant BM3 Mcgruber not guilty of all charges. “I really enjoyed the opportunity to work with everyone,” said Dixon. “This has been a learning experience for all of us and hopefully we will be able to do this again next year and improve the cases for the kids.”

Do you know the signs of Financial Fraud? MA2 Blake Denton / MA2 Camron Langley NAVSTA Security

The Naval Station Security Department Crime Prevention division chose to address Financial Fraud for the month of May. Financial fraud encompasses a wide range of illegal behavior—from mortgage scams, Ponzi schemes, investment fraud, credit card theft and tax fraud. Anyone can be a victim. Many people believe they will not become a victim of Investment Fraud because “they know what they are doing,” but the problem is scam artists know what you are doing as well, and they know exactly what to do in order to trap you. A research review conducted by the Financial Fraud Research Center has determined financial costs are estimated at approximately $50 million to Americans each year and the problem seems to be getting worse. FBI statistics also show that investment fraud has increased 52% since 2008. Unfortunately a high percentage of Americans affected by financial fraud is the elderly population (ages 50-70). This group is targeted because they have lost a substantial amount of their investment returns due to the recent economic decline and are easily persuaded with elaborate promises of retirement avenues. 1 in 5 Americans ages 65 and older have been victims of a financial scam, according to a study published in 2010 by the Investor Protection Trust. The recent collapse of the housing market has left many honest, hardworking Americans at risk for mortgage fraud. The Associated Press reported on Oct. 9, 2012, that federal investigators charged 530 people accused of defrauding more than 73,000 homeowners around the country who fell behind on mortgage payments, leaving them vulnerable to con artists offering to help avoid foreclosures. It is estimated that home owners lost more than $1 billion during 2012 alone. Those arrests came on top of earlier arrests from Operation Clean Sweep, a 2010 action of the Mortgage Fraud Working Group for the Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force which resulted in charges, convictions and sentences for more than 1,500 criminal defendants. Civil enforcements resulting from Operation Clean Sweep resulted in the recovery of $200 million. The best way to protect yourself from Financial Fraud is to be educated on the many different types of investment scams. 1. Pyramid Scams- These scrams promise a high return from a small investment when in reality there will be no return. Fraudsters make their money solely on recruiting investors in large numbers. Fraudsters go through great lengths to ensure there scam seems legit. 2. Ponzi Scams- Named after Charles Ponzi, these scams use money from new investors to pay “returns”

MAY 30, 2014• PAGE 3

to earlier investors instead of managing funds as promised this scheme will continue until no new investors can be found. At this point the fraudsters will withdraw all gained funds and disappear. 3. Pump and Dump Scams- With these scams fraudsters will buy large amounts of stock from a small, infrequently used company and then spread positive word to other investors about the stock. This cause an influx in sales increasing the price of the stock. When the stock reaches its highest price the fraudsters will then sell their shares leaving others with worthless shares of stock. 4. Advance Fee Scams- Fraudsters promise to manage portfolios of investors and gain high returns for an upfront fee. When the fee is received fraudsters disappear. Have you ever wondered if an investment is just too good to be true? Well chances are, it is. It’s important for you and your community to know that everyone, including you, is at risk for Investment Fraud. There are many ways to determine how if you are at high risk for Investment Fraud. The easiest way is to go to www.SaveandInvest.org/Meters/Risk and take their 12 question survey to evaluate your risk. This survey is based on two reviews done: 2007 Senior Fraud Risk Survey and 2006 Investor Fraud Study to help consumers find out if there choices are making more or less likely to become a victim. There is an easy two-step process to help you identify a fraudster that will greatly lower your chances of getting scammed: 1 Ask. Ask questions such as “are you a licensed broker?” and “Is the investment registered?” The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) has developed a Scam Meter to help consumers determine if an investment you are considering shows any red flags. Which could indicate it’s a scam. For more information on the FINRA Scam Meter go to www. saveandinvest.org/meters/scam 2)Check. Visit www.saveandinvest.org/fraudcenter to verify answers. There are many sites that can guide you in the right path to learn what the signs are in order to determine if you are working with a professional investor or a fraud. For more information, questions or concerns please contact the Crime Prevention Coordinators, MA2 Denton at 55020 or MA2 Langley at 84812.

2014 Memorial Day Ceremony MC3 Jason Bawgus Photojournalist

M

ilitary and civilian personnel from Naval Station (NS) Guantanamo Bay attended a Memorial Day ceremony at Cuzco Wells cemetery to remember those that have given the ultimate sacrifice for their country, May 26. The tradition of Memorial Day dates back to 1868 and was known as Decoration Day for relatives and citizens to decorate the graves of those who died while serving their country. The ceremony began with the observance of colors performed by members of the Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay Color Guard and NS Guantanamo Bay’s Commanding Officer Capt. J.R. Nettleton and Executive Officer Cmdr. Colin Caswell laying a wreath in honor of those that have fallen. Capt. Nettleton was also the guest speaker for the event and spoke emotionally about what Memorial Day meant to him and how these veteran’s sacrifices helped pave the way for future generations. “I am truly honored to be speaking here today and spending this morning with each of you celebrating the lives of so many American heroes,” said Nettleton. “It seems especially fitting being here in Guantanamo Bay to say thank you for our freedom. Just on the other side of that fence line so many people are not able

to enjoy the freedoms that so many of us take for granted. Freedoms that are available to you because others made the ultimate sacrifice.” The event concluded with Chief Diver Julius Mcmanus reciting the humbling poem “In Flanders Field” followed by a 3 volley salute by Marines from Marine Corps Security Force Company (MCSFCO), Guantanamo Bay and the playing of Taps by MasterAt-Arms First Class Michael Mcilrath. “As we remember the brave service members who gave the ultimate sacrifice on this Memorial Day, we must also look to the future. In our world, the cost of freedom is high but we are willing to pay the price. With deep admiration and thanks to those who have sacrificed their lives for America, we know that many of the men and women supporting Operation Enduring Freedom will make the same sacrifice. We include them in our thoughts and prayers today,” said Nettleton. “We are not able to return each of the fallen to their families or erase the pain their loved ones suffer. We can only show our gratitude and hope that the anguish of these families is lessened by the knowledge that their loved ones died for a noble cause. Today, we say, “Thank you.”

“A Rocky Marriage”

A

lright, so the title may be misleading—this article isn’t as much about a ‘marriage on the rocks’ as it is about my most favorite love story to ever hit cinema; the story of “Rocky.” I love the Rocky movies, but more than the boxing I love the marriage dynamic between Rocky and Adrian. In every film, there is a moment when Rocky seems lost and is simply going through the motions. However, when Adrian shows up and gives him a pep-talk it’s better than any training montage because it’s Adrian who supplies the motivation; she is Rocky’s inspiration. When I look at a film like “Rocky” I can totally appreciate what Rocky and Adrian share. He loves her more than he loves boxing. He chose her to be his bride and when he’s up against life’s ropes, it’s their marriage that reminds him what’s most important. There is a lesson here for us as well. You see, we can easily get too caught up in who we are at work that we forget we have spouses and families that are

left in our wake. I think of it this way; if I preach a good sermon on Sunday to 200 people and hit it outta the park but in the process make my own wife and kids miserable, then did I really do such a good job? What really matters? What we can forget is that our spouse was someone that we picked out of 6 billion other choices. Think about it; you were chosen—don’t forget that. Spouses, don’t forget that you chose one another and promised to love, honor, and cherish in sickness and health, for better or worse, richer or poorer. When times are tough, and you’re feeling against the ropes, that is when you need to press into one another even more and reaffirm your commitment to each other. When we’re feeling encouraged and supported by our families, we’re far more resilient to life’s punches. This is a great opportunity for both husbands and wives; to simply remind each other that they were chosen above all others, that they are loved, and that you will stand by them no matter what. The next time work or life outside of your family gets chaotic and you begin to forget what’s important, take a breath, and tell your spouse you love them. When you see your spouse getting pummeled by life, remind them that you’re still standing with them and they are loved, cherished, and chosen. These little affirmations of love during hard times can go a long way in divorce-proofing your marriage, through rocky times and into “Rocky” times.
