r. Thomas Brady, Director of Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), visited Naval Station (NS) Guantanamo Bay Sept. 9 to 11 as part of his first 100 days in office. “I am honored and privileged to be here, this is my first time at Guantanamo Bay and I have been educated on everything that is going on,” said Brady. “Capt. Nettleton has been a great host and made sure that I got to see everything I needed to while I was here.” Brady has been traveling around different DoDEA schools in his first 100 days as part of his strategy as the new Director. Brady’s plan consists of Look, Listen, Learn and Communicate. By traveling to as many schools as possible and observing the classes as well as holding parent conferences in which he discusses plans and answers a host of questions from facility and parents. “DoDEA has a good reputation that has been built by dedicated teachers, administrators, and support staff mem-
bers,” said Brady. “We are not confined by geography but rather we are empowered by our presence around the globe and our capacity to open a world of experiences and opportunities for more than one million military-connectedschool-aged-children.” Brady has an impressive record in the education field that all started while he was the Commanding Officer at Fort Belvoir, Va. After retiring from the Army Mr. Brady volunteered to become the secretary for the PTSA group at his children’s school. He was soon appointed to president of that group and later became a superintendent for many school districts along the east coast where students improved in subjects such as math, science, and reading. “One of the most important things that a parent can do for their children’s education is to simply walk through the door,” said Brady. “When the parent becomes involved with the school then the student becomes more involved.”

USNH Guantanamo Bay Recognizes Surgical Technicians Week LCDR Kristi Wood USNH Guantanamo Bay

ext week, Sept. 14 – 20, is National Surgical Technicians Week, and U.S. Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay wants to highlight these professionals at the hospital. Anyone who requires surgery at USNH GTMO will encounter many professionals who assist in caring for them during your stay. Several of those who are integral to any surgical case are the surgical technologists or ‘scrub techs’. Navy Corpsman who are surgical technologists have undergone a rigorous six-month training program that includes both classroom and real time operating room training before they are able to work independently as surgical technologists. HM3 Phillip Lucas says “he loves helping out in surgery and being a part of patient care.” HM2 Mark Gregg feels the best part of his job is “the diversity of this job and getting exposure to many different aspects of the medical field“. The profession of surgical technologist actually
emerged after the Korean War in the 1950s. At that time the demand for skilled operating room nurses far exceeded the supply, and the void was filled by the men who had been trained to aid surgeons on the battlefield. Today, Navy surgical technicians provide nursing care, safety and support to patients before, during and after surgery. The select, sterilize and prepare instruments and materials, and create the aseptic environment necessary for surgery. They assist the anesthetist during operating procedures, and maintain surgical equipment and records.. In addition to Gregg and Lucas, other surgical technicians currently assigned to USNH GTMO are HM3 James Gresl, HM3 Stuart Nunley, and HN Kenedy Smith. Anyone seeing them out and about in Guantanamo Bay, or in their professional capacity should wish them a Happy Surgical Technologist Week!
Patriots Day Ceremony

ervice members, civilians, dependents and Guantanamo Bay community members attended a Sept. 11 commemoration ceremony at the base chapel. Guest speaker Rear Adm. Kyle Cozad, Joint Task Force Guantanamo Bay Commander reflected on how the events of Sept. 11 have impacted his life. “Within minutes of the tragedy I was staring at the television with disbelief of what was taking place and like many I didn’t grasp the magnitude of the events until later,” said Cozad. “The events that happened that day still continue to shape who I am as a person and as a Naval Officer.” The ceremony gave everyone an opportunity to reflect and remember the tragic events that challenged our resolve, and set the course to counter violent global extremism. Chief Electrician’s Mate Patrick David said he felt honored when asked to sing the National anthem alongside Chief Hospital Corpsman Ernie Olivera. “It really means a lot to me to be part of this
ceremony. I believe it’s important for us to remember this event and honor those who lost their lives,” said David. “I remember when I first heard the news I was a 3rd Class Petty Officer on the USS Oscar Austin and we were conducting a working party offloading storage. We had to bring everything back on and prepare to get underway. It was a day I will never forget.” Sgt. Chris Naimon of Marine Corps Security Force Company (MCSFCO) Guantanamo Bay believed it was a privilege to be part of the ceremony that remembered so many people. “I was in the ninth grade when it happened and we were released right away to go home. I didn’t realize what exactly took place at that time, but I understand what it means now,” said Naimon. “To be part of an event that honors all those that were lost will always be something special to me.” As those in attendance left the ceremony they all knew that the mission they do in Guantanamo Bay was important and realized that often freedom isn’t free.

ow, it’s finally here! For four men and one female on this base today marks the final few days of Phase 2 of CPO 365—the making of a Navy Chief. Now I’ve never been a Chief but I can tell you I respect the heck out of them. I was promoted to Lieutenant in the Chief ’s Mess in Afghanistan and the only coins I’ve ever intentionally sought where those of Navy Chiefs. As a young Officer in the Navy, it’s the Chief who I often go to for answers to a tough leadership dilemma or for guidance on procedure and policy issues. As it was explained to me: Officers may run the Navy but it’s Chiefs who make the Navy run. In terms of deck-plate leadership, I’ve seen Chiefs forgo
hot chow in combat zones so their junior sailors can have it instead. I’ve listened to sailors tell me their Chief is like a surrogate father or mother to them, fulfilling a needed mentor role that they otherwise wouldn’t have had. I’ve even seen Chief ’s weep over the poor decisions their sailors have made, revealing their humanity beneath their professional veneer. For the Chief, the khaki never comes off; they’re always on duty, always teaching, always leading. The fact that this base will have 6 new Chiefs by this time next week is no small feat. And yet, for the new Chief, the real test still lies ahead. It’s not if but when they will stumble and my prayer is that they’ll always get back up for that is the kind of Chief our Navy needs.
