A crowd of up to 10,000 attended a free show and festival held in Rolleston which featured vintage and classic cars, as well as trains to celebrate the area’s connection with the railway. “The spirit of the whole show was really positive and people were able to enjoy themselves in a really relaxed way,” said organising committee chair, councillor Jeff Bland. CultureFest was organised by the council with help from

a range of other organisations to reflect a move towards an open and inclusive Selwyn. “Events like CultureFest help to build connections between different communities and raise the profile of arts and culture in Selwyn,” said the council’s events advisor, Dave Tippett. The festivities kicked off with an official opening at the Rolleston Library and Community Centre, with a history of the town through photographs and

memorabilia. For children there were movies and a storytime session at Rolleston Library. On Saturday, the Rolleston show and CultureFest were held. Attractions included shearing, shredding, milling and tractor pulling. C u l t u r e Fe s t i nv o l v e d performances by local groups, including Chinese, Polish, Greek and Scottish communities. Prepared for foot and mouth The success of an on-farm exercise run by the Ministry for Primary Industries shows that New Zealand is well prepared to manage the biosecurity aspects of a foot-andmouth disease outbreak. MPI acting director investigations, Diagnostic Centres and Response John Sanson says the one-day exercise at a dairy farm is part of a suite of work underway to make sure the country is well prepared to deal with the disease in the unlikely event that it occurs here. “In an outbreak, a property with even one infected animal would have to have all of their FMD-susceptible stock humanely destroyed within 24 hours. This would include all cattle, sheep, deer, pigs and goats,” said Mr Sanson. “There would also be national movement restrictions put in place immediately when the disease is confirmed, to reduce the risk of the disease being moved around the country by infected livestock.” The simulated scenario was an infected dairy farm, about a week into a FMD outbreak. It began with an incident controller arriving at the farm and taking over from a surveillance veterinarian on site. Approximately 30 people took part in the exercise but no animals were involved. “We wanted to test how our operational plans for destroying animals, disposing of carcasses, quarantining a property and disinfecting

vehicles and equipment fit together in the field, as well as how the on-farm roles work together,” he said. As part of the exercise a control unit was set up at the farm gate for people to disinfect gear as they left the farm. A transport truck was disinfected as part of the trial with water and detergent. “We were very happy to see that the plans worked well. We had people in full personal protective equipment with two pairs of gloves managing to use iPads. That allowed them to locate the best disposal sites and work with a simulated regional centre.

“Personnel took only 30 minutes to set up the gate control unit in accordance with the instructions in the disinfection plan.” Mr Sanson says the plans have been developed over three years, in partnership with the livestock industries and local government as well as overseas input. He says the mix of people involved in the exercise included staff from MPI, AsureQuality, industry and a number of Australian observers from state governments. This ensured that the plans were considered from all

perspectives. “Although New Zealand’s strict border controls means that the likelihood of FMD or any other exotic animal disease entering the country is very low, we have tested our plans to make sure they will work for the people who will be using them in the unlikely event of an outbreak. We have also identified a few gaps to work on. We’re confident these plans are in good shape to help us to swiftly deal with an FMD outbreak if that is something we ever face.”

CANTERBURY FARMING

AN HONEST

DAY’S WORK BY AYLA MILLER

T

here is nothing Holly Sandoe likes better than to be out on the farm with her dogs. The 23-year-old was born on a landcorp farm in Mawheraiti which ran sheep, beef and deer on the west coast of the South Island. Now she is living and realising her dream working on an established stud farm on the Tutukaka Coast in Northland as a shepherd and general right-hand girl. Holly found it difficult to break into the farming industry in the South Island and spent three years working on a vineyard, but her heart was set on working

with animals. When she met her partner, 27-year-old Joe Edlington who hails from Whangarei, she decided to move north in search of something different. “Farming is in my blood but I just couldn’t seem to get on a farm in the region. They wanted someone with 10 dogs or a huge amount of experience so I thought I had no chance.” She says farming in the North Island throws up different challenges to the South Island but she loves the lifestyle. “Now I work for the Clements Family of Matapouri — Polled Herefords and

I’m mainly a shepherd, but I do the fencing, drench the animals and whatever else needs doing.” She has a team of three dogs which consist of a fouryear-old heading dog called West, a heading bitch named Fly and a beardie huntaway named Cash. “Between the nor th and south everyone farms differently. CANTERBURY FARMING more as just a handy dog because he can go out and shift a mob on his own. Often people here only have one or two dogs not a whole team. The countryside is different too. I’m used to the alpine mountain ranges whereas up here it is a bit more tropical. “People-wise, everyone still seems to be just as friendly and they all enjoy their cups of tea still. Both places offer up the same challenges — it’s just the rain up here and the snow down there. “This is definitely what I wanted to do and it has been an awesome foot in the door. It has been a fantastic experience. “I enjoy being out on the land. I didn’t want to be cooped up in the office or inside. I just wanted to get out there and do an honest day’s work. “I’m passionate about my dogs, they are my best friends. I enjoy putting good genetics into the gene pool as far as the stud stocks go and bettering the breed. I love it all.

“I love being out there in the rain and the sun.” She says there aren’t many young women shepherding in the area that she knows about but uses the Farming Mum’s NZ Facebook page, although she isn’t a mother, to network with other young farming women. She advises any other young people wanting to get into farming to be proactive and approach their employers first without waiting for a job to be advertised. “My partner and I went door-knocking because in our opinion going up to a farmer seems to speak a thousand words as well as just having the right attitude. You have to think about the bigger picture. Sometimes you’ll get up and it’s pouring with rain but if you don’t get out there and do it the farm isn’t going to turn over. “To the females — don’t worry about what the fellas can do, women can do it too. You just have to have a little bit more smarts about you and be patient.”

Investment Markets Update (Covering the three months ended 30 September 2016) Global Environment — Fiscal policy is the next step The outlook for global economic growth continues to be low. Central Bank policies appear unable to stimulate sufficient growth given durable goods deflation and the negative impact of demographics on demand. The upcoming elections in both Europe and the United States also limit the potential for structural reforms, leaving fiscal stimulus as the next likely step. However, with government debt levels already high, this can only be pursued if interest rates remain low. Over the last three months to 30 September, both the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) lowered their economic growth outlooks in response to the economic impacts of

the United Kingdom leaving the European Union. Brexit fears have since eased and global growth looks to have strengthened, but growth and inflation have persistently missed targets. The US e c o n o my continues to be the best of the larger economies, however the upcoming November Presidential and Congressional elections, plus the European election in 2017, suggest that even in the US, any monetary policy tightening is likely to be gradual. Elsewhere, Asian economies continue to be the fastest growing, helping those economies within the region. New Zealand is well positioned in a regional sense, but the economy is being boosted by immigration driving the construction sector. This strength is evident in confidence surveys,

HEADER

with business and consumer confidence reinforcing a positive outlook. Equity Markets — More restrained in recent months Reviewing equity market returns over the three months to 30 September, returns were positive but much of this can be attributed to the returns made in July. Markets have tended to mark time since then, with the November US Presidential and Congressional elections taking centre stage. Equity markets have also shown unease with the lower than expected stimulus from Japanese and European Central Banks, albeit Japan still targets capping longerterm government rates at zero percent. US, European and UK equity markets had the strongest net positive earnings revisions among international markets, albeit the stronger New Zealand Dollar counteracted these gains. UK returns were

particularly hard hit by currency, with the British Pound (GBP) depreciating significantly following the vote to exit the European Union. New Zealand equities continue to deliver above average returns, but similar to other markets, August and September monthly returns were muted. This may be a reflection of lower foreign flows, though New Zealand’s relatively strong economic growth and stable outlook should continue to see New Zealand remain in favour from a global context. Australian equities provided similar returns to those of New Zealand equities over the period. This was despite a more mixed reporting season where there were more downgrades than upgrades. Earnings per Share (EPS) growth in Australia however, is expected to recover over the next two years and this resulted in gains over the quarter. Looking forward, even with downgrades having been made, the Materials, Utilities and Healthcare sectors are expected to deliver doubledigit earnings growth over

and models. Built specially for NZ conditions. Also repairs and alterations.

the next two years. Market growth is expected to be more modest, although still a respectable +7.0% p.a. Fixed Interest Markets — Back Central Bank support for longer While domestically the Reserve Bank of New Zealand is expected to cut the official cash rate, longer-term interest rates are being driven by global Central Bank policies and in particular quantitative easing measures. Recently, some of the stimulus provided by Japan and Europe has been lower than the market expected. The US Federal Reserve is also closer to raising its official rate. This has led to some speculation that longerterm interest rates could be nearing an inflexion point. In reality, real interest rates have been falling for over a decade. This has been a reflection of durable goods deflation and demand constraints posed by ageing demographics in developed economies. To bolster demand and growth in these economies, fiscal stimulus is expected to be the next step adopted by authorities. The indebtedness of governments does however require

interest rates to remain low. Accordingly, it appears more likely that Central Bank policy will continue to remain accommodative and cap longer-term interest rate increases. In the meantime, low absolute interest rate levels have led to an increase in corporate issuance. This continues to allow investors to be more selective and to use the new issuance to improve the overall quality of portfolios. A trap for Kiwisavers Since the introduction of the Kiwisaver Scheme some years ago, the Government has extended the system so that Kiwisavers can withdraw all of some of their savings to be used for payment of a deposit on the purchase of their first, or second chance home. With most superannuation schemes including Kiwisaver there are strict rules about the application of the funds, and those who intend to use their savings for the purchase of a home should work closely with their legal advisers to ensure that everything is done as required by the rules imposed on the scheme. This is particularly so when the Kiwisaver member intends to purchase a home which is a new build and is required to purchase the section before building commences. Where a member of Kiwisaver intends or is required to purchase the section before the house is built using their savings with the Kiwisaver scheme they must use the savings from the scheme on the purchase of the section and not when the house is under construction or completed. If they become the owners of the land before they have uplifted and used their Kiwisaver monies, they are not considered to be a first home buyer and are no longer eligible to obtain their Kiwisaver/Homestart funds at all. This does not apply where the house has been completed and the Kiwisavers are settling the purchase of the whole property including land and dwelling at completion of the development. This is an example of the application of the strict rules concerning the use of Kiwisaver funds and the

The withdrawal of funds from the Kiwisaver Scheme for whatever reason apart from the death of a member was not envisaged at the time the scheme was set up. The main purpose of the scheme was to enable people to save monies for their retirement. The question

which arises is whether anybody should be allowed to withdraw funds for the purchase of a home having regard to the initial purpose of the scheme. Time will tell whether it serves its purpose. BREED BY ANDY BRYENTON

We’re used to most of our modern livestock being the product of careful selection and breeding, with cattle especially being refined over the decades into productive and hardy beasts of the field.

ometimes the genetic ‘recipe’ of a breed is so right that there’s little that must be done to keep the bloodline strong and profitable, even over a period of centuries. One such breed of cattle is the Charolais, which has remained largely unchanged since first being recorded as a distinct type in the early middle ages. In fact, the sturdy, muscular cattle from the Charolles district of Burgundy boast a recorded family tree which predates that of some of Europe’s aristocracy. That’s quite a

pedigree! The first reference to the Charolais stems from around 800AD — nearly three centuries before the battle of Hastings, and at a time when Burgundy was a powerful kingdom in its own right, one of many which made up the lands which are modern France. The rulers of Burgundy counted their wealth not in gold, but in resources — grain and cattle foremost among them. At a time when the height of technology was a windmill, a breed of cattle which could fulfill three roles — draft animals, milking

beasts and cattle for meat — was of not just economic but military importance. Centuries passed, and by the mid 1800s the breed had been further refined by careful breeding, producing the standard form seen today — a hefty 900 to 1,100kg beast with a distinctive creamy colour and well defined musculature. France established a formal herd book for the breed in 1864, but it was Irish farmers who first took the cattle from Burgundy overseas. Distinctively cream-coloured and sturdy of stature, the Charolais is a big cattle beast with a long history with difficult or rocky pasture land, and inclement weather was little problem either — the Charolais is able to grow a rugged winter coat when temperatures drop and shed it again in the spring. It was not until the 1960s that the Charolais came to the attention of Kiwi farmers, despite the fact that some of our pastureland shares features common to the hilly interior of Ireland. It was a visit to France by the Director-General of Agriculture, D N R Webb which spurred interest in the breed — though his fact-finding mission hit a wall when confronted with export restrictions. Two years of wrangling passed, with little achieved until Mr Jack Sutherland visited Navarre, France, in the

same year the prohibition on expor ts was lifted. Impressed, and galvanised into action by the potential he saw in the Charolais breed, Jack petitioned the authorities for the right to import the materials for artificial insemination. The government of the day were not so sure. “This question of the establishment of Charolais in New Zealand has, as you know, been a very contentious issue, and has been opposed by some breeders,” read a letter sent to Jack Sutherland from the Department of Agriculture in 1965. “In consequence, the Government has decided to proceed cautiously and the permits for the initial batch of semen will be confined to those required

Charolais cattle can be found worldwide, adapting to varied environments and prized for their sheer productivity

for experimental work to be centred round Ruakura and possibly the two Agricultural Colleges” Undaunted, Jack sent his own cattle to Ruakura. He fought to bring the breed to New Zealand commercially, and won. In 1967 he triumphantly displayed the first Charolais at the Timaru A&P show, starting a quiet revolution in the rural sector. The next year, at a meeting in Oamaru, Jack went on to help found the NZ Charolais Cattle Society — a group which is still going strong today. Recognised not just here, but internationally, Jack Sutherland was elected World President of the combined organisation for Charolais breeders in 1978. In 1980 he presided over the world congress for

the breed, held right here in New Zealand. This year, delegates from New Zealand travelled to Mexico where that nation’s Charolais herd book authority hosted the 2016 gathering of international Charolais breeders. All reports point to a bright future for the breed, which is now found in more countries than ever before, and which enjoys a popularity on a par with the famous Friesian and Jersey. While the big stature of the Charolais — with some bulls rumoured to tip the scales at 2,000 kilograms — is without question, it’s their hardiness and sheer productivity which helps them punch above their weight worldwide, bringing the name of a small part of medieval Burgundy to the world.

Southern escape by Andy Bryenton The southern high country has a special place in the character and mythology of our nation. It’s a rugged and beautiful land, immortalised in artwork and photography — its almost otherworldly quality making it the perfect backdrop to Peter Jackson’s epics of Middle Earth. Jenny O’Carroll deliver to their guests at Waitohi Downs, a thriving 930-hectare property near the Hurunui River in Hawarden. Because this couple are not just farmers, managing their vast acreage as custodians of the land. They are also at the forefront of a rustic, unique form of Kiwi tourism, offering the longest and most spectacular horse treks in the nation. Lawrie ‘grew up in the saddle’

and his ties to the land go back to his earliest years. His father owned Waitohi Downs before him and from an early age he took part in both work and play in the company of horses and horsemen. With seven siblings, the wide-open spaces were both home and schoolroom, as well as their family’s livelihood. Then as now — and in the colonial past — the kind of country which lies between the central

divide and the braided rivers of the lowlands is no place for internal combustion. Sheep, cattle and deer are farmed in the hills and, as in olden times, horseback is the best way to tend to them. Lawrie learned the ways of horses in competition, with sports such as rodeo riding and polo. But he also spent sixteen years in the high country as a hunter, shepherd and musterer. When

bio YCLE Heading out on the trail is a pleasure unchanged for generations, enabling riders to enjoy the stunning southern scenery original pioneers, while other stretches of the ride take in the grand old stations of Canterbury, those great landholdings which founded the agricultural tradition of the region. Due to his amiable relations with many of the current station owners, Lawrie is able to allow his guests access to places not usually open to outsiders, and the reward, in terms of vistas and views, is unsurpassed. Even people who have toured the South Island on bicycle or on foot say that they are surprised by the new experience had from horseback. Of course, the horses themselves are as

much a part of this trekking experience as Lawrie or Jenny themselves. Lawrie has been a horse breeder for many years and the 75 clydesdalethoroughbred crosses which make up his horse safari stable combine the best parts of both breeds. Animals with lots of stamina, sharp wits and plenty of heart, who can assure even relatively inexperienced riders of sure footing and a pleasant ride. Named for the native plants and trees seen along the route, these horses sometimes make more of an impression with their personality and determination

than the breathtaking views from the saddle! More and more Kiwis are waking up to the gems of wilderness and backcountry just outside of town. The pioneering spirit is still alive and well in even the most cosmopolitan of us and the urge to gear up in oilskins and a wide brimmed hat, pack up swag and tucker bag, and swing up into the saddle to get close to the land is still a strong call. Perhaps that’s why Lawrie and Jenny’s Alpine Horse Safaris are more popular than ever, tempting people away from the everyday and into an extraordinary communion with nature.

Germany, Corinna is right at home with both the horses and the Kiwi wilderness. In 1981 Lawrie and Jenny bought Waitohi Downs and soon after conceived of the concept of taking tours on horseback through the country he’d grown up in. It was not until 1992 that the first tour was ready to head for the trail, but since then word of the unforgettable experience has spread far and wide. Of course the appeal was instantly apparent — there’s a rugged kind of allure to packing up a tucker box and billy, swinging up into the saddle and traversing the wilds where so very few people have roamed. It’s a long way from the big city — but that’s the hook for tourists and visitors from around the world. Lawrie says that it’s easier to list the nations which he and Jenny haven’t had guests from — the list of those who have joined them on the trail spans France, Australia, America and more. Lawrie’s Alpine Horse Safaris can last from a half-day ride to a twelve-day epic adventure, striking out south toward Lakes Tekapo and Benmore. Along the way this monumental journey takes in river crossings, high mountains, wide-open valleys and bushland. Some of this land remains the same today as it was in the time of the

Weather Watch by Tony Trewinnard As you probably recall, we went through one of the biggest El Nino events on record in 2015 which peaked at the start of this year and decayed through the late summer and autumn months. For a while it looked as though we would be heading to a significant La Nina event by this coming

summer. However, from July to September the La Nina seemed to have stalled and until very recently, the Pacific

was in only a very weak La Nina state. However, in the last month the La Nina has reinvigorated itself and is currently making moves towards a fully-fledged La Nina event. It might not quite get there this summer, but it will be close. This suggests the summer (November to March) period will bring higher than usual air pressure (more anticyclones) to the east and south of New Zealand, and lower air pressure (more depressions) in the north Tasman Sea. The Tasman Sea is currently warmer than usual and expected to become more so over the summer months, which supports the idea of low pressure systems developing there. In the first part of the summer I expect to see anticyclones over or near the South Island quite often. This will reduce the number of hot, windy northwesterly days in Canterbury; bring brief cold southerly

changes with some rain; and see long fine periods with north-easterly winds. Overall, the November to January period will likely see less rain than normal (but not unusually dry); above normal sunshine hours, especially away from the coast; and temperatures near normal overall, or perhaps a little milder than normal inland. Winds should be lighter than usual overall, with fewer hot nor th-westerly days and more days than usual with easterly or nor theasterly winds. These often bring cooler daytime temperatures to the Canterbury coast, but significantly warmer nighttime temperatures, leading to mean temperatures being a little milder than usual overall. Inland parts of Canterbury can get quite warm in these nor th-easterly airflows, especially the basins near the western foothills. The reduced frequency of hot north-westerly days should

reduce evapotranspiration rates overall. Later on in the summer I expect to see the anticyclones move further out into the Pacific and the low pressure systems start to affect the North Island. This will bring regular periods of north-easterly airflow onto New Zealand and from time to time some of these low pressure systems (or the remnants of them) will affect Canterbury. Again, there will be fewer than usual northwesterly days. So, the January to March period may see at least normal rainfall, perhaps wetter than normal; sunshine hours will be normal at best, quite likely cloudier than normal; and temperatures should be milder than normal, especially night-time temperatures. Humidity levels may be higher than usual, which can lead to problems with fungal diseases. Blue Skies is currently working on a major upgrade

The ‘Know to make it Flow’ Andrew Curtis, Irrigation New Zealand CEO

Irrigation knowledge critical for dry season ahead With a predicted dry season ahead, irrigating farmers are turning up in droves to irrigation training opportunities to ensure supply can be eked out for the months ahead. In Canterbury, IrrigationNZ has just partnered with Environment Canterbury on a series of short, overview workshops across the region to get irrigators thinking about irrigation good management practice. These workshops complement the full day training IrrigationNZ already provides as they give irrigators a taste of what they need to be aware of and trained in to meet fully efficient irrigation. We have full day courses coming up in Cromwell (27 October), Nelson (3 November), Renwick (4 November) and Rangiora on 22 November. Further details can be found on our website www.irrigationnz.co.nz/events Commissioning is a process by which agreement is reached that an installed irrigation system meets its design performance specifications. There’s been growing tension around the

commissioning of irrigation systems. To be frank, it’s something that’s been done poorly in New Zealand for a long time. After four months of consultation with industry, IrrigationNZ has reached an agreement on the minimum expectations for commissioning a piped irrigation system. A document detailing these expectations is now available on our website, alongside the recentlyreleased Best Practice Guide to Commissioning Piped Irrigation Systems (www.ir rigationnz. c o . n z / n ew s - r e s o u r c e s / irrigation-resources/inzcommissioning-and-as-builtmanual). If our guidelines are followed it should avoid future angst. Some of you may have seen or heard about the advertisements we placed in the Hawke’s Bay to counter anti-farming messages

irrigated agriculture’s role in the Havelock North water crisis, as well as the future benefits Ruataniwha 128mm x 100mmwill

Not Just Dairy Lanes

A Green Perspective

with Eugenie Sage, Green Party Primary Industries spokesperson

Ireland leads with ‘Origin Green’

Kiwis like to think New Zealand is ‘clean and green’ and we use this image as the basis for marketing our primary produce overseas. But increasing water pollution and New Zealand’s biodiversity crisis, with more than 2,000 of our native plants and wildlife facing extinction, are just two of the big holes in that brand. We could work to give integrity to our ‘clean and green’ brand by implementing a sustainability strategy for New Zealand food and agriculture, as Ireland is doing with its Origin Green programme. Origin Green wa s established in 2012 as part of Ireland’s Food Harvest 2020 sustainability strategy. It aims to shift Ireland’s agri-food industry from being focussed on low value commodities (sound familiar) to a greater focus on consumers, to being a world leader in the market for premium products and capturing a bigger share of those markets. It is a voluntary, national scale programme coordinated by Bord Bia, the Irish Food Board. It involves the Irish government, the private sector and food

producers. Around 55,000 Irish farms and 95% of food and drink manufacturers are now on board. Each Origin Green business commits to having a five year sustainability plan with measurable targets to reduce their environmental impacts, provide social benefits to local communities and make their business more sustainable. The plans are independently assessed and audited annually through Bord Bia’s quality assurance scheme. With its focus on meeting consumer demands for high quality, safe, and sustainably produced food, Origin Green is leaving supposedly ‘clean and green’ New Zealand well behind. We cannot expect middle class consumers to want to buy our dairy, wine, fish, fruit and meat products when rivers too shallow or polluted to swim in and nitrate laden groundwater regularly make the news, town tap water causes major

gastro outbreaks, and when the fishing industry illegally dumps tonnes of fish and opposes world class marine protected areas. Yet that’s the reality of brand New Zealand. Instead of replacing the ‘100% Pure NZ’ tourism marketing strategy with the ‘NZ Story,’m because the former is no longer true, we could develop a similar strategy to Origin Green to focus on sustainable production. A New Zealand version of Origin Green could build on initiatives such as Beef and Lamb’s Land and

Environment Plans and the farm environment plans now required in Hawke’s Bay and Canterbury. Such a programme needs strategic and funding support from government, accreditation mechanisms and a commitment to sustainability which the Green Party in government would provide. A Kiwi Green scheme with measurable goals around producing quality food and fibre while protecting our climate, land, biodiversity, soils, water and air can help make our farming systems and practice less stressed, and more sustainable.

Forestry Market Report Allan Laurie MNZIF, Laurie Forestry Ltd

Full of opportunities Market conditions have remained stable to slightly firm across most segments over the last month. Domestic supply constraints appear to have improved but sawmills are bending some of the quality rules to get the volume of logs they need. Export prices have firmed slightly on the back of a US$3 to 4 per cubic metre lift in CNF prices. A stable FOREX and shipping cost platform has ensured the lifts have been realised at the wharf gate. The more recent lower value of the NZ$ against the greenback should see the continuing firming trend continue. Having recently spent a week in the China market, readers might be interested in some information gleaned from around the negotiating table. I am always keen to understand how more recent trends in domestic economy growth is impacting the wood fibre manufacturing sector. Five years ago, I recall the average sawing cost in China was about the equivalent of NZ$6 per cubic metre sawn. At that time the sawing cost in a NZ sawmill was in a NZ$50 to $60 range.

The average cost in China is now NZ$18 to $20 per cubic metre whilst NZ costs have remained about the same despite compliance, running costs and maintenance costs ramping significantly. The Kiwi sawmill owner has the advantage of technology enhancement to improve productivity thus reducing costs. The China factory is more constrained by the daily productivity of a factory person. Five years ago an average wage of a sawmill factory worker in China was the equivalent of NZ$600 to $1,200 per month. The average is now $1,800 to $2,500 per month. There is certainly no Kiwi sawmill employee who can boast a 100% wage rise in five years! Again the above are averages with province by province and city to city variations. A sawmill in China is very much a factory operating on contract rate rarely including further processing. Sawmill owners do not always own the logs but some sawmill owners are also traders. A typical

factory has multiple sets of 2 band saws. In a single set the first band saw is as in a normal head rig, cutting the log down to flitches or slabs. The second is a standard breast bench milling to final lumber dimensions. There are seven to eight people operating the sawmill set. Those seven people will have a typical target of 50 cubic metres of logs per day. The sawdust extraction system is normally a shovel and every bit of off-cut is used in some way in further processing or taken to the chip or pulp mill. The set up is very basic with a single roof overhead housing several sawmill sets and few creature comforts. A typical sawmill set costs about the equivalent of NZ$100,000 to set up including infrastructure. So for about NZ$1 mil you can have 10 sets up and running and milling 500 tonnes of logs per day. A typical modern sawmill in NZ of similar capacity would cost $20 to $30 million to set up The reason for going into this in some detail is

to explain to some of the “why don’t we mill the logs in NZ” fraternity, why this cannot happen right at the moment. However, we should very much continue to watch that space and seize upon opportunities that arise as inevitably they will, given the growth stats above. Whilst in China I was asked to give a presentation to a Supply Chain Logistics conference in Qingdao. This is a small city by China standards boasting about nine million people in the city and immediate environs. Qingdao is in the Shangdong province, 600km north of Shanghai and boasts the longest bridge in the world at about 27km. My presentation included a table explaining it takes 60– 70 days from the felling of the tree in NZ to it being sawn into lumber in China. This leads to quality issues, principally sap stain. As the higher quality end of our business is pruned logs, I believe the only solution is to mill these in NZ and this received a good deal of support. This trip once again confirmed for me three things. Firstly the world is full of opportunities and I wish I was 20 years younger. Thirdly wood fibre commodities are bucking many trends and enjoying good demand and good pricing. Thus, it has never been more timely to remember the only way forward for climate, country and the planet is to get out there and plant more trees.

Money does grow on trees! The Emissions Trading Scheme is in force in New Zealand and it could be a shortcut to good returns if you start planting trees. It assists in meeting international climate change obligations, putting a price on greenhouse gases which creates incentives to reduce emissions and increase tree planting. Under New Zealand’s ETS you no longer have to wait 25 years to reap what you sow. Planted forests can be now claimed as carbon credits and sold to carbon emitting industries both here and internationally. The good thing about carbon credits is that they can be sold to generate an additional revenue stream from your forest so you get a return on your investment sooner. Or you can use them to offset other business activities, to achieve carbonneutral status. What’s more, the market for carbon credits is looking very healthy. For example, in February of this year, they had a value of $9. Last check they were sitting at around $19. With the Paris Climate Treaty now signed and ratified by USA, China, India and Europe it is now legally binding on the 191 nations that have signed. All this points to the ETS and carbon pricing being here to stay. Furthermore, the NZ government is recognising the need to plant more trees to meet our obligations under this long-term agreement. is the AGS (Afforestation Grant Scheme) in which the government will pay $1,300 per hectare for planting green field/pasture land. Forest Management Group (FMG) has successfully applied and planted over 450 hectares under the AGS and established thousands

of hectares of ETS forests. They can help with the application process and look at the opportunities available, ensuring you get a good return, sooner rather than later. For detailed information, contact the Fo r e s t Management Group.

From the Minister

Nathan Guy, Minister for Primary Industries

APEC trip October 2016 A few weeks ago I spent a busy couple of days in the city of Piura in Peru, South America, attending an APEC Food Security meeting. The conference included other ministers, officials and business people from around the Asia Pacific region. A strong message I pushed to them was the importance of open trade in feeding the world. We will never achieve food security without efficient markets to move food from nations like New Zealand to consumers around the world. We are a clear example of how removing state subsidies and controls has actually helped our agricultural sector become more successful than ever before. Events like these are an important opportunity to meet with other countries and build closer links. I had numerous bilateral meetings and discussed a range of ways we can share our knowledge and expertise. Other countries recognise New Zealand’s success as a food-producing nation and are keen to tap into our agri-

technology and education. This is a good example of how our primary sector is about more than just exporting commodities. We have many international students coming to study at places like Lincoln and Massey and our agri-tech companies are in great demand. Meeting with other nations has also been very useful in pushing along various market access issues which will have real benefits for our exporters. A big issue for trade we’ve discussed is not just tariffs but also non-tariff barriers like complicated and unpredictable rules and regulations that some countries apply at the border. This kind of bureaucratic red tape can be a major obstacle to trade, especially for small and medium sized companies. This is why the TPP is so important, because it sets the frameworks for consistent standards and rules across the region. Without this certainty a lot of trade and investment just wouldn’t happen. Before coming to Peru I spent a day and a half in the US state of Nebraska

Nathan Guy at the APEC Food Security meeting

where I strongly pushed the benefits of the TPP. It is a hot topic in the US with both presidential candidates sceptical, but there is support in the broader community and some optimism from people I spoke to that it will pass during Congress’s ‘lame duck’ period following the election. While in the US, I pointed out the Asia-Pacific region has enormous growth potential and is determined to liberalise trade, whether the US is involved or not. As part of this visit I spoke to a global forum on agriculture and trade, held a press conference and met with various industry

and other leaders including congressman Tom Ashford. It was pleasing to hear strong support for TPP from the wider agricultural sector but as in New Zealand to some extent, the challenge is communicating the benefits to the wider community. Another eye-opening part of the trip was visiting a desert in northern Peru where T&G (Turners and Growers) is growing grapes with the help of irrigation, water storage and New Zealand expertise. It was hard to believe that much could grow in these hot dry conditions but it just reinforced to me the huge potential of water storage.

Helping with arthritis I could fill a book with the testimonies of clients that are experiencing significant improvements in joints affected by osteoarthritis (OA). As an example I have been working with someone with OA in her ankles and back. Through diet we wanted to reduce inflammation but also help lose a few kilos to take more pressure from the affected joints. Back arthritis is generally the least responsive to diet and supplements. Because of this we started with much higher doses of supplements. We added high levels of antiinflammatory omega-3 with higher doses of broad spectrum antioxidants and minerals. We added a temporary antioxidant booster and a double dose of my joint formula. In the first two months she was on over 1,500mg of high grade chondroitin and glucosamine with 200mg

of 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. Within two months she started to notice the difference. She has been able to significantly reduce pain medication and has greater mobility. As a bonus her energy has improved and feels much better in herself. Last week I carried out a monthly review with another client in her mid-80s who had arthritis in her shoulder and hands. She commented on how much better these were. Nutritional therapy can have unexpected improvements. This client also had a long-term problem with very dry skin. While it has taken time to improve, here we have an 85-year-old whose joints and skin have improved significantly. Many people respond

to health problems by purchasing supplements at the supermarket, health store or that advertise on TV. There is nothing wrong with that but in my experience the best results come from using a full nutritional programme covering diet, supplements and appropriate lifestyle changes. These are the steps that can really make a difference. Give me a call or email if you need more information. Abundant Health Bettaflex Super Joint Formula What is Bettaflex?

• Bettaflex is a joint support formula to promote healthy joint cartilage function. • Bettaflex combines high grade chondroitin sulphate, glucosamine sulphate and a potent 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. • Each capsule of Bettaflex contains 382mg of high grade chondroitin, 425mg of glucosamine and 50mg of curcumin extract.

BEST BUY! $79.95 for 3 bottles free freight or 1 bottle for $28.95 plus $4.99 postage

How can Bettaflex help?

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

John Arts comments:

“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

Country Matters with Rob Cope-Williams

The more I dig, the worse it gets I know I have banged on and on about depression and mental health problems throughout New Zealand but seriously, the more I look into it, the more I am finding, and it is a very real epidemic. People who I thought were totally OK and full of life and community works are either suffering or have been there and got the t-shirt. We are all very good at saying it won’t happen to us or any of ours, but wake up New Zealand, depression is taking more lives than fourwheel motorbike accidents. The Wellington Wombles are very quick to try to stop the obvious, such as fourwheel motorbike accidents, produce huge volumes of farm safety regulations and wrap everyone in cotton wool as they cream off salaries that any farmer would be thrilled to be paid, but because depression isn’t visible, it is swept under the carpet. I am aware that the Government provided funds for mental health support in Canterbury because of the quakes, but for the life of me I can’t find out where it was

spent. Perhaps the biggest factor I am finding is the self denial situation. People who do have trouble getting out of bed through a total lack of incentive and fear of what they will have to face if they do, are convincing themselves that they are simply rundown and need a holiday. Wrong! They are staring at a serious problem that they won’t admit too as mental health problems are what lunatics suffer from. Wrong again, it is an imbalance that can be fixed by a wide variety of people, but the first step is recognition of the fact and acceptance that you aren’t your normal self. Then there’s those who refuse to take drugs. If you are one, or you have one in your circle, there are people like Karen Degen who can help. Look her up on Google. Perhaps the most refreshing thing about working on this

problem is that those who have taken the steps and returned to the real world, rediscovered their families and have stopped being very miserable, is that they admit to having troubles, and that it is now over. I am talking about some of the most successful people you and I know. They may not bring the subject up but if you were to mention to them that you aren’t happy in the space you are in, you can expect a lot of support rather than being laughed at. When I was suffering very badly I covered it up very successfully — wouldn’t talk to anyone and nearly became a statistic. I suppose to a degree it’s like smoking and drinking — when you know there’s a problem you will do something about it — until then you will make every excuse you can find to avoid stopping.

Workshops on water Canterbury farmers are no strangers to irrigation and water conservation problems and workshops by IrrigationNZ are being held to bring them up to date with new environmental requirements. Most recently South Canterbury farmers were invited to a Pleasant Point workshop on October 14, aimed at showing them how to irrigate efficiently to cope with dry conditions. IrrigationNZ project manager Steven Breneger said more workshops are being rolled out this summer than in previous summers due to the increasing knowledge that base ir rigator s require to meet new environmental requirements. “As well as learning ways to improve water efficiency through better scheduling, the IrrigationNZ workshop covered calibration, the operation and maintenance of irrigators, and Farm Environment Plan compliance,” he said. The one-day workshops are a mix of classroom learning and practical in-thefield application, with a walk alongside irrigation machinery helping participants identify operational risks. “The irrigator walk really helps as we talk about the maintenance checks they should be undertaking and look at the most common problems and pitfalls. Many of our participants tell us

they learn the most from this exercise and go away inspired to employ more regular maintenance.” Opuha W a t e r ’s Environmental Manager Julia Crossman says the last two summers in South Canterbury have shown just how important it is for farmers to use the water available to them as wisely as possible. “Present ground conditions are again dry for this time of the year and Opuha Water Ltd is already looking at how the water stored needs to be managed in the season ahead to ensure it can sustain irrigation demand and river needs for as long as possible. Efficient irrigation on-farm plays a crucial role in this. “These dry conditions mean that, more than ever, irrigators need to operate at peak performance, and the Irrigation Operator and Manager Training arms farmers with useful tools to help them achieve this. The irrigation scheduling component of the workshop highlights the importance of understanding the different soils on farm and their water holding capacities. The

workshop also is particularly useful in building knowledge of soils, water, plant and climate interactions. An irrigator is unable to apply water efficiently if it is not calibrated or maintained well. The workshop, therefore, also provides some useful insight into what farmers should look out for and check to ensure their system is running as optimally as possible.”

A&P SHOW When the country comes to town

All roads in Canterbury will lead to Agriculture Park for a three-day annual event, running from Wednesday, November 9 to Friday, November 11, Canterbury Anniversary Day. The Canterbury A&P Association’s annual show has been a calendar fixture every year since 1863. Once more the show will cater for a broad spectrum of interests offering gourmet food and wines, the thrills of the mechanical rides in Sideshow Alley, wide-ranging featured entertainment, close competitions of judging in the show rings through to the carnival atmosphere of the Grand Parade. The event features more than 6,000 livestock and competition entries, some 570 trade exhibitors, indoor and outdoor exhibits, feature marquees and pavilions as

well as top entertainment and attractions. Over the three days 800 horses, 1,000 sheep, 300 cattle, 200 alpacas and hundreds of animals from dairy goats to sheep dogs will come together from across the province as well as further afield. Entertainment will be provided on the main stage on the More FM Village Green or in the Main Arena. The show is a key component of New Zealand Cup and Show Week, a festival of all things rural, racing and fashion promoted

nationally and internationally by Christchurch City Council. It contributes some $28 million to the local economy, attracting an average 100,000 visitors, over 30 per cent originating from outside Christchurch. The 2016 show has its roots deep in the provincial history, with the earliest record of any such event taking place on December 16 in 1852 in Hagley Park. The first ‘recognised’ agricultural show in Canterbury was held by the

fledgling Canterbury Pastoral Association on September 14 1859 at B Moorhouse’s station at Shepherd’s Bush, on the north bank of the Rangitata River. At the conclusion of this show the Canterbury Pastoral Association was officially

formed — subscriptions were set at one guinea a year. In 1962 the Canterbury A&P Association celebrated its centennial and by then was established at the Addington Showgrounds until a 100-hectare block of land at Wigram was obtained from

the Christchurch City Council. The old facilities at Addington had become cramped and dusty and no longer able to cope with the large number of entries and crowds of visitors and the move to Canterbury Agricultural Park in Curletts Road was made in 1997.

First Aid for Lone Workers - 8 hours Recommended for people who work in a rural environment, and who are often alone in medium to high risk roles. Farmers, DOC staff, rangers & rural pest control workers have benefited from this training. What this 8 hour course covers: Farmers and other workers in the agricultural sector or people that work alone, may not always find conventional first aid courses useful. Some courses don't cover strategies for people who work alone. Developed in conjunction with OSPRI, the course is designed as an alternative to our First Aid Revalidation course and is generally run for groups with some public courses available. You will learn: • Standard First Aid Revalidation on CPR & choking • Infection and disease control in a rural setting • Extended options for bleeding and shock • Management of soft tissue injuries and fractures when alone • Dealing with burns, poisons and allergic reactions

If only there was a way to use free energy from God given sources to power my life I would be extremely feeling word. I should give the very competent people at Sunshine Solar a call on 0800SUNSHINE to talk about Solar Hot Water / Micro Hydro / Solar Electricity Central Heating / Lighting / Insulation.

Grain Auto-sampling coming For many years, sampling grain has been important in measuring key quality parameters in combinable crops. To analyse the quality of grain from a truck, one needs to use a ‘truck sampling spear’ to manually get a sample. “Automatic grain sampling will soon be available in New Zealand making the process much easier and more efficient. This is where the truck pulls up to a station and an automatic ‘arm’ activates and inserts a ‘spear’ into the grain. A vacuum system then sucks out the grain and presents it for analysis,” says FF Instrumentation Ltd manager Bob Olayo. “These grain auto sampling products will be the first in New Zealand to my knowledge.

“They not only save money but they save time and remove the need for having a staff member responsible for the sampling process, which will eliminate human error. “The machine takes the sample of grain from the truck at the weigh station and analyses the moisture and protein content as well as prints out just one document with all the necessary information. At present the truck driver receives a number of papers and this makes it just one. “This will

do away with the handson responsibilities and the machine automatically stores and retains samples, along with the information of delivery truck and client, saving a lot of time, and it is a lot more efficient. Bob says they have been very well received in Australia with many installed across the country and more are constantly being installed. “Mills and grain handlers here are very interested. The general consensus is it will change the way grain is

Out front for protection Hardworking four-wheel drive vehicles have a tough life at times, and bull bars, winches and suspension refinements can make them go a greater distance in their working lives. Ironman 4x4 products have been developed in the harshest proving ground in the world, Australia, and have been available to 4WD users for over 50 years. Sold in more than 120 countries, Ironman 4x4 products deliver quality and value for money. With one of the largest ranges of suspension in the world and top of the line accessories, you will find what you need at your local Ironman 4x4 distributor. Come and see us at the Canterbury show, site E64, for helpful advice. We offer a range of replacement winch bull bars which are designed, engineered and tested in Australia. Every Ironman 4x4 bull bar is carefully crafted from premium grade materials and components to deliver the most comprehensive frontal protection and styling available. These are carefully modelled using 3D vehicle scanning techniques to achieve optimal cosmetic design whilst providing maximum vehicle collision protection. All bars are made from the highest quality SPHC oil and pickled steel (not mild steel) to give

maximum strength and rust resistance. The finish is top quality using the AKZO NOBEL Powder coat system, which gives a thicker, smoother and more durable coating. Along with winch and air bag compatibility, Ironman 4x4 bull bars offer affordable protection for your farm utility or wagon. They have a high strength mounting design utilising a replacement cross member that goes in the front of the chassis to which a winch can be mounted. The bar is then bolted to the new cross member. This design gives the ultimate in strength as the winch is mounted to the chassis and not the bull bar itself. The majority of bars for late model vehicles are full replacement, meaning the original whole front bumper is removed and replaced. This avoids the need to cut the bumper and results in a perfect fit. Very few other bars on the market offer the same features.

Ironman’s two monster winches are becoming very popular, a 9,500lb and a 12,000lb. The gearbox on the winches has an upgraded design with hardened gears to eliminate float for precision operation along with an improved sliding clutch with straight cut gears which eliminates any gearbox slip. The rotatable gearbox allows positioning of the clutch handle to allow easy hand access. Winches come complete with a wireless remote with a 40m range as well as a 3m lead remote. The 12,000lb monster winch has a 6hp (4.5kW) motor which is fully sealed and is supplied with a breather tube for mounting high on the firewall away from water. Winches

have 28m of steel cable or have the option of 28m of synthetic rope. Suspension kits and components with raised height, long travel and improved performance are available for most makes and models. Ironman 4x4 shock absorbers are available in 35mm nitro gas or 41mm foam cell. These have longer travel and are built stronger to deliver performance in all conditions. Leaf and coil springs are made from high quality SUP9 steel and are available in different load ratings from ‘comfort’ to ‘extra constant load’. For a full run down on all our products see www. ironman4x4.co.nz, phone 0508 IRONMAN or come see us at the Christchurch show.

CANTERBURY FARMING

Cracking into a

healthy industry by Andy Bryenton

I

t’s been a known fact since the dawn of time that walnuts are tasty. But it’s only with the advent of science that we’ve begun to learn about the health benefits of this hardshelled superfood. Now those who farm the distinctive twin-lobed nuts are banding together to watch their business grow, alongside the profile of their entire industry. Walnuts have been cultivated since ancient times and not just for their delicious centres. The ink used by Leonardo Da Vinci was processed from the black interior husk of the walnut cultivar Juglans nigra, for example, and symmetrical walnuts were carved and used as meditative aids, rotated in the palms of Chinese sages and philosophers like the

ceramic ‘stress balls’ sold at new age shops today. Now, as the world wakes up to the health benefits of the walnut — the only nut which contains large amounts of the vital alpha-linolenic acid alongside a hit of vitamins, antioxidants and minerals — Canterbury growers are leading the charge toward a modernised industry, forming a co-operative in the same mould as dairy giant Fonterra. The first annual meeting of that group — the Walnuts New Zealand Co-operative — was held in July this year, with a strong showing of shareholders and a definitive message for the future of walnut cultivation in Canterbury and beyond. Dedication to producing a quality product and taking the processing and marketing of that product in hand is the

group’s mission and there must be few boards of directors in any industry who have the depth of experience present on the executive of Walnuts New Zealand. All are walnut cultivators in their own right and some have served with an exemplary record in other farming advocacy organisations. Walnut cultivation in Canterbury is booming, with over 120 growers tending close to 400 hectares of productive trees. A hub of industry centres around the fertile lands of Darfield and West Melton, so it’s no surprise that this is where the first walnut processing factory belonging to the co-op is established. Built in 1996, the Cracker of a Nut company was brought into the Walnuts New Zealand fold in 2015, having enjoyed many years of

Old growth — Walnut trees take a long time to mature, but can remain productive for years, laden down with goodness

Sometimes there are substantial, short-term increases in electricity demand. Changes like these may trigger the need for additional investment in New Zealand’s electricity transmission network – a cost that is passed on to all New Zealanders. While most of our Demand Response participants are large businesses, we are keen to expand the programme to include smaller agri-businesses and farms – especially those using irrigation. If your business or farm has a peak load of greater than 20kW, and has a time of use meter, Transpower would like to hear from you. From the beginning of November we are asking interested parties to apply to be part of our programme. If you’d like to know more, please contact Quintin Tahau through demand.response@transpower.co.nz. If you’d like more information, visit our website at: www.transpower.co.nz/demandresponse

CANTERBURY FARMING  October 2016  success in its own right. Set up by the visionaries Malcolm and Jenny Lawrence, the Cracker of a Nut factory now forms the core of processing activities for the new co-op. Walnut processing is an art unto itself and as anyone who has had occasion to wield the nutcracker knows, the hard-shelled delicacy is reluctant to give up its prize. By 1998 the Lawrences were pressing the first real Kiwi walnut oil and by 2006 their walnut oil, walnut flour and exotic purple walnuts were all used in a single dish by chef Mark Sycamore to take out the prestigious NZ Chef of the Year award. Constant upgrades have made the factory a year-round facility, producing all of the food ingredients one can extract from the humble walnut, as well as using the ground shells as a natural abrasive — a substance used by the US military for aviation parts cleaning until very recently. New Zealand’s walnut crop is entirely gobbled up by our own insatiable hunger for the tasty treats. In fact, 500 tonnes a year are imported, largely from California, the world’s biggest exporter of walnuts. This is all set to change as production ramps up even further, both on farms belonging to Walnuts New Zealand Co-op members and through the Cracker of a Nut factory. New machinery, both for the harvest and for processing is coming on line, with the harvest especially

Old growth — Walnut trees take a long time to mature, but can remain productive for years, laden down with goodness shifting from a manual task to one expedited by engineering. When it comes to the automation of the Walnut business, the US leads the way although French equipment is more suitable for New Zealand. Walnut harvesters gather the fallen nuts and sorting engines which cleverly remove the outer shell and the green ‘husk’ which conceals the brown nut — and reject any duds. This sort of equipment has already been put to work on several Canterbury walnut farms and others will surely

follow as production tonnage lifts. Once overlooked by many as a baking ingredient or a quirky addition to summer salads, but nothing more, the walnut is enjoying renaissance in New Zealand and around the world. By banding together into a strong alliance, farmers who have invested in walnuts — a crop which takes many years to reach maturity — will be able to have a bigger voice and a more visible presence not just on supermarket shelves but in round table discussions among the

advocates of agriculture. This approach is not just common sense, it’s also one which is enticing new growers to contemplate their options in the industry. In the not too distant future, we are almost certain to see a day when new Zealand shifts from being a net importer to a net exporter of walnut products. When that day comes, it will be the culmination of many years of hard work, going back to seedlings planted and plans formulated before the turn of the century.

ADVERTORIAL

Back pain expo in your area Inversion New Zealand coming to you After eight years of touring the country, attending the Home and Agricultural shows, demonstrating their Teeter Hang-Ups Inversion Tables, Inversion NZ have decided to put on their own shows in the rural and provincial areas, I asked Dave Hare why. “We have had a lot of people tell us that they don’t want to travel the distances to the major centres, struggle with car parking, trudge around a big show fighting hoards of people, then have to stand waiting for a treatment, especially if they have a stuffed back,” he said. We thought that it would be a lot easier if we came to them, so we started looking at the halls in the smaller areas and experimented with our own shows. It’s been a blast he said, it’s easier, considerably more relaxing, no parking hassles, people can sit on chairs while waiting for a treatment and there’s no entrance fee. What we find is people are more relaxed and get a proper treatment, have the time to ask relevant questions and actually enjoy themselves and come away from the event, in most cases having experienced relief and feeling

confident they now have an answer to their issues. Here in NZ the Teeter tables recently gained a boost from one of the most respected back pain specialists in the country, Dr Giresh Kanji. Dr Kanji completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing Fix Your Back. He then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote Fix Your Neck Pain,

Headache and Migraine, both books are in bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in his research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse. Dr Kanji has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter

Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the world on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, “these things are gold” and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain.

New Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After more than eight years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started eight years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”.

was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips eight years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”.

“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older.

To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here

TESTIMONIAL

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more.

DEAR DAVE AND NANCY

In 2008 I had been living with a serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The Specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business.

Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been talking” Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs: It uses gravity to apply traction, the Posture: Poor traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots far more effectively and returns quality of life

Muscles: A

lot of pain is muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

Ashburton

Come along to one of our expos near you over the next few wekends. (see below for details). If you have completely resigned yourself to having back or neck pain for the rest of your life, then chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.

Walnut Avenue Pavilion Walnut Ave, opposite Ashburton College. 5th & 6th November 10am - 4pm

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there. This is pure logic, if a machine is out of alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life. If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

BACK

or

At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two, I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has brought my health back. Thank you very much for the opportunity. Very best regards Paul Gordon Cambridge

Stripping your windows has never been so easy By Dave Hare When it comes to stripping your windows, it’s normal to be confronted by the scope of the project, and the windows that won’t open or close properly because of the many coats of paint that have glued them shut. The tricky corners with all that built-up paint that seems impossible to strip and of

course the lead paint that we grind into dust with sandpaper to spread around for everyone to breathe; it’s all very daunting. Well not anymore, Simon Cooper from the Cooper’s Strip Club, says. Simon says their stripping system makes stripping your windows the perfect DIY project. Simon confidently claims their easy-to-use products and methods will remove any paint or varnish from the inside or outside of your windows without the need to use sandpaper. Simon says their stripper will dissolve any finish and their flusher will rinse the surface clean and because the process is wet, there is no harmful lead dust to worry about. During November the Cooper’s Strip Club will be in the Canterbury region. 70,000 homes, Simon says anyone can easily strip anything covered in paint or varnish such as furniture, doors and mouldings, or even weatherboards and windows baked by the sun for over 100 years. But what also suprises people is how ideal Coopers is for stripping your special project car or boat. I also asked Simon about the current problems related to safe lead removal. Simon says. “Because there is no lead dust created through sanding, or lead vapour generated by heat guns, lead poisoning is no longer a concern” I asked Simon what the Stripping Expo is all about and he said, “The Stripping Expo is a DIY paint and varnish stripping exhibition travelling regionally throughout New Zealand.” “The purpose of the Stripping Expo is to show Cooper’s stripping any paint or varnish from any surface.” Simon says this months Stripping Expos are in the canterbury region, “We have on exhibition some impressive before and after displays, as well as practical one on one demonstrations.” Come and meet the family, chat to us about your project, bring along some photos of what you want to strip and we’ll select a similar old piece of paint or varnish to strip with you.” But what Simon really wants you to do is actually bring along your project, no matter how big or small. Bring a chair, a drawer, unscrew a window sash, a door, a piece of Archtrave or skirting board, or even your project car or boat and the Cooper’s will really show you what Cooper’s is capable of doing. If your project is too large to fit into the car e.g. house lot of windows, doors, weatherboards etc, we are happy to show you at your home for free. If this sounds like you, come in and discuss your project and arrange a time.

“I was sick of how difficult it was to use the current strippers, and knew sanding was a complete waste of time,” Simon says. “Why sand when the person who made the item, sanded it in the first place? I was determined to make a product that was easy to use and made sanding obsolete.” Simon is Kiwi-born and bred and as a dairy farmer’s son he was taught at a young age to work things out, rather than to accept things as they are. At high school he developed a passion for working with wood and his love of fine furniture began. Once Simon developed his own stripper, the word got out and today, over 30 years later, Simon’s Simon Cooper from the Cooper’s strip club products and methods are now known as Cooper’s Strip Club; a complete By Darryl Clarke, Coopers was started by Simon Cooper in the early DIY restoration system, family owned and operated, available throughout New Zealand and 80’s. The FEP is considered to be a key environmental riskmanagement tool to assist farmers recognise on-farm environmental risks and set out a programme to manage those risks. Your FEP is unique to your property, reflects your local climate and soil types, your farming operation and systems, and your goals and aspirations. The degree of complexity of a FEP depends on how complex the operation is and how much farm system change is proposed. Irrigation and irrigation management is obviously a key component in the FEP — you have heard it all many times: • Operate irrigation systems efficiently; • Ensure that the actual use of water is monitored; • Keep records of areas, depths (and not rates

Acronyms — our habit of making a pronounceable word from the first letter or first few letters of each word in a phrase or title so we can speak faster and confuse others. Then these newlycombined letters create a new word which becomes used in everyday language — famous ones like NASA and ASCII (for the computer literates). So FEP has become part of our everyday language in the resource management field — otherwise known as your Farm Environment Plan. Many people have been waiting for more clarity around the new environmental rules and some have been quietly hoping they will go away! Be assured they won’t be going away. Much of this is covered if you have a water meter and it is logged/telemetered, and you measure soil moisture. FEPs are not only ECan’s cornerstone to achieve environmental outcomes, they are an integral part of a resource consent to farm. So if you have not started the process of getting your FEP, now is the time to do it and I’ll leave the resource consent requirements for another day.

CANTERBURY FARMING

E G A L I S & E G A L BA Euro duo fire up the blades by Andy Bryenton

European pasture equipment company Pottinger has been literally at the cutting edge since the 1870s, when the firm’s patriarch Franz Pottinger developed a revolutionary new forage cutter. Now a pair of their machines are causing a stir in the world of hay, silage and baling, with a host of awards and some smart advancements in this vital area of farming. First up is the new Boss Alpin self-loading wagon, a machine with a huge appetite for forage. Up to 19m³ can disappear into the voluminous storage space of the Alpin, but that’s not how it got its name. Instead, the allusion to mountainous terrain is all about the Pottinger’s ability to handle steep slopes, broken ground and less-than-ideal

conditions. While the makers of this machine may have had the Alps in mind, it’s certainly a fair description of large swathes of New Zealand farmland too! Lightweight and incorporating a tine conveyor system, the Alpin is only enhanced by the addition of Pottinger’s proprietary AUTOTAST automaticallycontrolled pivoting drawbar.

Need the most cost effective baling option?

Pottinger has made a bold foray into the forefront of baling with their awardwinning new Impress round balers, which focus on the flow of crops into the chamber to make big gains on both time and output. With raw materials going over the roller rather than under it, the innovative configuration of the Impress series produces bales with very low disintegration loss and reliable uniformity. Thirty two hardened tool steel blades complete the chop, and even this subsystem has been optimised for ease of maintenance, with spares always kept on board and each knife protected during operation. A short chop means greater compaction, which means less handling and denser bales in the long

run. On variable chamber models, the bale pressure can be adjusted in three separate zones to adapt to individual requirements. The PRO series has no less than six pre-selects for different parameters when baling hay, straw or silage. Taken together these innovations were enough to earn the Impress an impressive gold medal at Poland’s Polagra agricultural expo 2016. With harvest season more critical than ever in these days of intensive farming, gearing up with the best technology can make a world of difference when it comes time to feed out. Pottinger continue to live up to the legacy of their founder with both the Alpin and Impress series, helping farmers get more out of every pasture.

Good management for good forage There is a rule of thumb on the farm that if proper techniques are followed, excellent quality silage can be produced with obvious ongoing benefits both for stock wellbeing and the bottom line at the bank. Some of the best quality silage ever made has come from round bales sealed in plastic. On the other hand, some of the worst silage has come from round bales in plastic. According to university forage crop specialist Lester Vough, these extremes in quality are related to procedural techniques for putting up round bale silage and problems that can occur during storage. “If proper techniques are followed, excellent quality silage can be produced, but if bales are not managed properly, it can be a disaster resulting in total loss of the silage,” he says. “It may be easier to preserve hay crop silage in upright, trench and bunker silos than in large bales sealed in plastic. Plastic is much more susceptible to air leaks and oxygen infiltration than concrete or steel, so the ease of maintaining an oxygen-free storage environment is much less for

bales surrounded by plastic than for conventional silos. “The round bale silage system has a number of advantages over hay and conventional silage systems.” Mr Vough adds the round bales greatly reduce the risk of weather damage to forage as well as providing for both hay and silage while the main attraction of large round bales is the ease and simplicity with which they can be mechanically handled. They also lower overall fixed and operating costs than other forage systems, requiring less specialised equipment and no storage structures. “Round bale silage may be a solution for small dairy operations because it can be a one-man system that helps beat weather and leaf loss There are some disadvantages that need to be considered as well. Maintaining airtight storage can be a problem as there may be less or incomplete fermentation, resulting in higher pH, unstable silage.

“As with any other forage conservation system, keep in mind that the final product will not be any higher in quality than what is put into the bales. Harvesting the forage at the proper stage of maturity is critical. “A forage crop that is over mature and low in quality may lack sufficient sugar content for good fermentation, especially if moisture content is not greatly reduced. Choose storage locations as close to the planned feeding sites as possible. Bales should be stored in a well-drained site and free of as much vegetative growth as possible. “Grassy areas should be mowed before bales are moved onto the site. A clean site reduces the potential for rodent damage to the bags. “

Canterbury Branch NZ Deer Farmers Assn Sponsored by Mountain River Processors Ltd

Exporters back single QA standard for deer farms All five major venison marketing companies and the NZ Deer Farmers Association (NZDFA) are backing the introduction of a revamped quality assurance programme for farmed deer. The companies have agreed on a single standard for deer that will eliminate duplication between companies running their own QA programmes. They have also agreed that, after a three-year phase-in period, compliance with the QA standard will be a requirement for the supply of animals for Cervena™ venison. The development of the single standard was initiated by the marketers and coordinated by Deer Industry NZ (DINZ) as part of the industry’s Passion2Profit (P2P) programme. For farmers who produce beef, lamb or goat meat as well as venison, the deer standard is included in the NZ Farm Assurance Programme, which has been developed by the Red Meat Profit Partnership (RMPP). “This means all species will be covered by a single

baseline standard and the same audit process, further reducing paperwork for farmers,” says DINZ quality manager John Tacon. “Venison mar keting companies will deliver the standard to their farmer suppliers, with the timing determined by their customer requirements.” Both P2P and RMPP are Primary Growth Partnership programmes between the Ministry for Primary Industries and, respectively, the deer and red meat industries. NZDFA chair David Morgan supports the single standard. He says it will help streamline paperwork for those farmers already involved in QA schemes for two or more processors. “I think any farmers trying QA for the first time will be surprised how easy it is to do and how useful it is. Most farmers will find they are

already doing all the things they should, but without the standard and audit you can’t prove this to a third party. “A QA audit is a great way to check that you and your staff are complying with all the rules and regulations we have to deal with these days. Honest mistakes with things like registers of animal remedies can be extremely expensive. The QA scheme makes it less likely that you will make them.” While the on-farm benefits of QA are real, the ultimate driver for on-farm QA comes from the marketplace. Venison exporter and DINZ deputy chair Glenn Tyrrell says most NZ deer farmers take great pride in producing a quality product and take animal welfare very seriously. “This is not necessarily the case in other parts of the world. There have been a number of high profile

incidents that have upset consumers,” Tyrrell says. “Important international customers — food service distributors and supermarket buyers — are increasingly demanding proof that all the food products they buy meet their expectations for ethical farming and quality standards. New Zealand’s good reputation is a big plus, but they still want a paper trail and an audit report.”

He says over the years individual exporters have developed their own QA schemes in response to varying customer demands. “Now we have come together with a single credible standard as part of Passion2Profit that will be easier to communicate to overseas customers. “Quality in all respects — from animal welfare, to environmental protection, to

food safety — underpins the brand values of NZ venison and Cervena in particular. It’s what chefs and consumers are buying and ultimately determines the premium they are willing to pay for our meat. “I strongly encourage deer farmers to talk to their marketing company or deer agent about what it has to offer them.” To find out more go to www.deernz.org/QA

Wool Perspective

From Rob Cochrane GM, Procurement, PGG Wrightson Wool

Slightly more positive tone Although the local wool market has continued to face pressure during the past several weeks, generated by obvious financial restrictions from Chinese buyers, the majority of growers offering wool at New Zealand wool auctions have faced reality and met the market. The ear ly October auctions brought audible sighs of despair from a large proportion of wool growers as prices for crossbred and many mid-micron types slumped to levels well below the cost of production. After approximately three years of relatively stable prices, the major reduction in wool returns of late, dealt to an already struggling sheep farming industry, has been received with both astonishment and anger, however the obvious resilience of farmers who are, unfortunately, used to fluctuations in pricing for their produce, is something which has to be witnessed closely to enable understanding. There are a number of growers who have managed to insulate themselves to a degree from the recent negativity in the spot marketplace by having taken out insurance through either fixed forward price contracts or flexi-contracts offered via PGG Wrightson Wool’s whollyowned wool export business Bloch & Behrens (B&B). As Palle Petersen, GM of B&B said: “We introduced a Flexicontract product to PGW Wool growers around 30 months ago as a way of combatting market volatility, and now our growers who took up the opportunity are reaping the benefits. Likewise the manufacturers we locked in at the other end of the pipeline are currently having to pay a little more than perhaps they might prefer, but surety of supply is important to them. PGW’s fixed price contracts signed up to a year ago, for

wool being delivered now are also being greeted with joy by the growers who wisely opted for some security.” After a few days visiting wool growers in Southland recently, where the pastures could only be described as ‘lush’, my faith in farming was restored due mainly to positive attitude, even though a lot of conversations centred around a range of farm produce for which the outlook this season appears bleak. Whilst most ‘city slickers’ would probably be in need of a tourniquet if their salary was suddenly slashed by 50 per cent, the majority of farmers cut their cloth to suit and ensure survival until the market improves. After all, most farmers are committed to their investment in the land and have no option other than to continue with their farming business, diversify where practically possible rather than have all of their eggs in one basket, and trust that their knowledge and experience will help them get through. We are all very aware that wool returns have not

Kevin James Wool been the major contributor to farm incomes for more than 25 years, however if the cost of getting produce to market continues to exceed financial return, then once again we will face alternative production models being introduced to the, already small, sheep farming industry. On a more positive note, at time of writing, the October 20 Christchurch wool auction had just concluded with a much better than anticipated tone evident. Crossbred

wools were generally 2% to 4% dearer than at the previous auction held on October 6, Halfbred & Corriedale types were fully firm and Merino types were between 3% and 5% dearer. There was a pass-in rate of approximately 13%. Whilst the improvements in price in percentage terms come from a low base, at least the market moved in a positive direction — let’s hope it continues that way. That’s my view.

Potential of dairy beef integration The final report of a five-year study into the use of quality beef genetics in a dairy beef supply chain has been released confirming the potential for dairy farmers to produce high value calves with minimal calving problems using proven beef genetics. The aim of the Beef and Lamb New Zealand Dairy-Beef Integration Programme was to analyse and demonstrate the benefits and risks involved throughout the supply chain in order to increase the supply of quality calves to the finishing industry. The AgResearch-led project led by Dr Vicki Burggraaf, AgResearch Farm Systems Scientist, was funded by Beef and Lamb NZ Mid-Northern Farmer Council with in-kind

support from LIC and Ezicalve (proven Hereford sires). The release of the final report provides the detail behind preliminary findings released to the red meat and dairy sectors in early September. Dr Burggraaf said the beef industry is becoming increasingly reliant on calves sourced from dairy farms but the sires of these calves have traditionally been of poor or unknown genetic potential

for beef production.” The study demonstrated that using proven sires with high Estimated Breeding Values for calving ease limited calving problems and those with high EBVs for liveweight produced cattle with higher growth rates. “The use of proven beef sires with high EBVs for calving ease and liveweight over dairy cows has benefits for dairy and beef farmers,” Dr Burggraaf said. Beef Integration Programme, Doug Lineham, said “the findings confirm what we’re seeing in the market where dairy farmers are receiving up to three or four times the value of a bobby calf for a quality dairy/beef animal. “The detail included in the final report provides dairy farmers with renewed confidence that breeding low BW cows to proven beef genetics is the way to go for the future. “That change to their mating strategy gives them a range of options. They can sell the resulting calves to a rearer, at the yards, or grow them on to

100 kilograms if they have surplus land. Even if they opt to put them on the bobby calf truck, the dairy/beef calves will weigh out more than a straight dairy animal. “There is a wide range of quality proven beef genetics on offer to farmers — from AI through to leasing or purchasing proven bulls. Grazing bulls is time consuming and resource hungry so it pays to ensure they are proven and will deliver a good result.” Mr Lineham said increased use of quality proven beef sires will benefit dair y farmers with easy calving,

high quality calves worth up to $150 more than bobbies, calf rearers/finishers with faster growing animals which finish earlier and have a high carcass value, and meat processors and consumers with an improved supply of quality table beef. With the dairy mating season getting underway around the country, Doug Lineham is encouraging farmers to read the final report from the Dairy Beef Integration Programme and speak with their advisors about the best option to treble their calf cheque next year.

Uncommon sense

David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy

The honest truth? I felt honoured to be included in a group of 11 farmers and advisers who recently converged on the South Island for a study tour over a week. Our main purpose was to observe better management systems on dairy farms, particularly in respect to biological and chemical

usage of fertiliser. Our first destination was the Dairy NZ Field day at Back Track Farms in Methven, Canterbury. This is a three

year study comparing the two systems, the biological farm being managed under the Albrecht-Kinsey system and the xhemical farm under the Ballance AgriNutrients approach. We are currently on Year 2 and the outline of the trial was set out in the January 2014 Dairy Exporter magazine. My mission was to gather all the information available to us, including the initial parameters, the Albrecht-Kinsey process and the approach of Ballance Agri-Nutrients as referenced from their website and general client practice in New Zealand. I have attended the last two annual Fieldays where the annual scientific measurements have been presented. I have observed that to go to a single field day without looking at the whole picture, will give a totally different outcome to a person’s thinking if they are looking for an indicator of the honest truth. Both parties that are involved with the fertiliser have full and open access to fertiliser tests, applications and the results of those applications. It was interesting

to see that the biological side is producing generally more positive results. At the May Field Day at Back Track Farms the Albecht-Kinsey farm reported 500 kgs/ha more grass grown over the year than the chemical farm while using 43 units of Nitrogen/ha less. More clover growth, higher winter soil temperature, higher production per hectare, lower Somatic Cell Count and a higher Effective Farm Surplus were all points to be noted in support of the Albrecht-Kinsey farm. On our recent visit to the Dairy NZ Field Day on October 6, the Albrecht-Kinsey farm was still showing positive gains over and above the chemical farm, namely higher soil temperatures, cows producing 2.4 kgs MS/cow/ day compared to 2.2, 5.57 kgs MS/ha/day compared to 5.26 and 13 cows showing clinical milk fever compared to 35. An observation and comment made was that the higher production and better clean-up of pasture on the Albrecht-Kinsey farm was from better quality pasture because of higher amounts of clover.

In recent months the Albrecht-Kinsey system has been regarded as ‘pseudoscience’ by a leading soil scientist who also suggests that science has already proved that any innovation is just wasting tax payer’s money particularly relating to soil fertility. If this soil scientist is referring to the science which is being practised in New Zealand by Ballance Agri-Nutrients, then let’s take a look at them. Their website is very impressive and there are a couple of very important scientific standards that they follow. Many farmers in New Zealand would agree that their standard advice is to have a pH in the soil of between 5.8 and 6.0. In fact their leading scientist had an article at the beginning of the 2015 Dairy season stating that if the pH is 5.9, then you are wasting your money putting on fertiliser that would increase it. Based on this information, I went to the May 2016 Field Day to find that the pH on the Ballance AgriNutrients farm was sitting at 6.3. Upon questioning them how they got that pH to 6.3,

they replied that they had applied 2.5 tonne/ha of lime. My next question of course was “Did they know what the pH was before they applied that lime?” They said that ‘Yes, it was 5.9 pH’. A sceptic might suggest that Ballance Agri-Nutirents are changing their policies to ‘keep up’ with the positive advantages being shown by the Albrecht-Kinsey system. At the October 6 Field Day there was a positive move from the biological side to target a reduction in the amount of nitrogen applied yet again from 117 kgs/ha/ year to around 100 kgs/ha/ year. Discussions at that Field Day suggested that the chemical farm would follow suit. For Ballance to copy and follow the Albrecht-Kinsey system, then there will not be any significant difference which is, of course, what they are reporting. My conclusion is that the Albrecht-Kinsey system of soil fertility in this trial is leading science and Ballance AgriNutrients are learning a lot from it. The next field day should prove interesting.

Fundamental changes in soil fertility practice are already underway, and people are finding their way into one of three camps. There are those that understand common usage doesn’t necessarily make any practice the best option and are embracing new technologies, or are busy canvassing all their options in preparation for change. There are those that are unaware that fundamental change is inevitable, and that the time to ‘change-over’ is near. And there are those that are absolutely determined that nothing will shift them from their present practises regardless of their consequences, and the benefits of embracing a new paradigm. They’re challenging and fascinating times, with plenty to be learnt from observing people’s reactions to the mounting pressure. Change always brings uncer tainty, and that’s seldom welcome. Soil fertility and associated science have recently become much debated topics, with a number of scientists taking opposing positions, leaving farmers and growers wondering what’s right and whether consensus

might ever be reached. There is much that can be done on-farm to understand the current situation and what, if any, changes may be required. Initially a fencing spade will provide a wealth of useful information. Carefully digging a cube of soil, spade square to full spade depth from the middle of an ‘average’ paddock will provide a useful insight. Ideally soils are 50% air and moisture, and contain sufficient obvious ‘crumb’ to provide gaps large enough for water to percolate through and plant roots to travel easily down. Under heavy treading, which is inevitable with grazing animals, soils compress. Compaction occurs when the soil does not regain its original pre-grazing structure prior to the next grazing. In most situations at this time of the year digging should be reasonably easy. Should you find that the soil is hard and tight it’s likely that the bulk of plant roots will be in the top few centimetres. One observational sign of shallow rooting is irregular

NORTH CANTERBURY LTD

growth patterns. When all conditions, moisture, temperature, and sunlight are favourable exceptional growth is likely, followed by a sudden reduction if conditions become less favourable. The crowns of pasture plants should be close to the surface of the soil. Should they be sitting high it may be possible to remove a plant by hand, and the length of the roots will give an indication of the structure below. Where conditions favourable for pasture have been established there should be few if any bare patches of soil. Large leafed clover should already be starting to fill the gaps between grass plants in readiness for summer. Many areas of the North Island have experienced far more than usual rain over late winter and spring, and on many, but not all farms, this has resulted in excessive mud. Functional Fertiliser clients have reported that their properties have grown strongly with genuine pugging confined to the small areas when stock were confined and heavy rain occurred overnight.

Trucks have been able to spread fertiliser when this has not been possible on neighbouring farms. These properties will also retain more moisture and, with their plant roots growing down to below half a metre, it will take a prolonged dry spell for growth to slow appreciably. Nutrient, including nitrogen produced by the clover, will be extracted by plants before being lost to groundwater, reducing the amount of nutrient that is required to maintain high levels of pasture growth throughout the season. Faster growth also results in higher quality grazing as there is more leaf surface area for plants to capture the sun’s energy and convert it to soluble sugars. Over more than a decade we have found there are no downsides to implementing Functional Fertiliser’s full nutrient programmes, based on the well-documented performance of the soil improvers CalciZest and DoloZest. HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

Mating and Lameness How is your preparation for mating going? As this will be the focus for most farmers at the moment I thought it would be a good idea to talk a bit about lameness that is more specific to this time of the year — that is lameness in front feet as well as lameness in bulls. It is normal to get more lameness in front feet at this

time of the year compared to other times. Cows are bulling and when they come off the ridden cow they land on their front feet. This produces more traumas to deal with than normal walking. There is not really any suspension in the front feet just like there is no suspension in human

feet. People can create suspension by bending their knees, but a cow can’t do that with their front feet, which puts an enormous amount of pressure on the locomotion apparatus when they do land on their front feet. Did you know that you could break your legs if you jump off the back of a truck and you keep your legs straight? The amount of pressure that the average person puts on their feet by jumping off the back of a truck is about 1,000kg. So it is no wonder that you do major damage if you keep your legs straight. In the same way there is a lot of force going on to the front feet of a cow when they ride another cow. A lot of the lameness in the front feet is ligament damage but we do get more hoof problems as well. This does not mean that this sort of lameness is purely caused by physical force. Again, the cow must have weakened claws from laminitis and then physical

force will make the problem worse resulting in lameness. If it was purely caused by physical force, we would see a lot more problems because most cows do come on heat but in comparison there are not many going lame on their front feet. We can’t stop cows from riding each other and we actually don’t want to stop it so we have to look at minimising the stress levels on them and make sure that our tracks and holding yards are stone free. Lameness in bulls is slightly different. A few things are

HANHAM

happening with bulls when they arrive on the farm and when they go with the cows. For one the environment is totally different — different food, different routines and different lifestyle. I don’t think the testosterone levels will have an effect on laminitis but all the other changes currently do. We do have some physical problems as well. The wear pattern in animals that only walk on pasture is different from animals that walk on hard surfaces. When bulls all of a sudden walk on hard surfaces

Specialists in farm rolling machinery Plucks Engineering is a family owned and operated business that has been manufacturing and servicing agricultural machinery for over 50 years. All our staff are qualified tradesmen, extremely skilful and trained to the highest of standards, with many years specialising in agricultural machinery. Over the years we have spent a lot of time working on our Land Roller design. This continues as we update materials and construction to produce an even better finished product. Of course clients play a large role and what this means is a purpose built implement designed around their needs and suited to all conditions that the New Zealand countryside can throw at it. Our latest innovation is a huge roller from our our workshop for a customer who

required a special very wide roller to suit his farm. It is unique in its design by being only one roller, but 6 metres wide and 9.86 tonne empty or 26.6 tonne when full of water. It is made in three sections to ensure it turns freely and is very manoeuvrable both in the paddock and laneways with a special Plucks Engineering towbar design that is a spring loaded. The towing attachment takes all the shock out of the towing between the roller and tractor. The Land Roller is one of many different types of agricultural machinery that we manufacture. We pride ourselves on what we have achieved with this machine

and the results it is achieving in all types of New Zealand conditions. We have been manufacturing Land Rollers for over 45 years now and have long since sorted out any problems with design and strength. Plucks Engineering takes a lot of care in preparation before we weld or bolt a machine together. Grinding of all areas to be welded allows for full penetration welds. This means that the full strength of the section of steel is being used. We at Plucks Engineering are aware of and very proud that we have developed a very efficient, safe and robust roller that our clients love to use.

Apply Gypsum Now

The benefits of gypsum in soil treatment are well known, but its value goes well beyond this: • Helps mitigate the flow of nitrates and phosphorus in New Zealand waterways • Can be used to address the issue of built up sodium from applied effluent • Reduces surface run-off and drainage loss, reduces preferential flow of water run-off in soil • Can be applied by a number of different means to target risk zones • Assists with addressing high soil potassium or magnesium levels and when soil PH is already at a high enough level. • 100% more soluble than lime. for more about Natural Gypsum and soil stabilisation visit www.gypsum.co.nz Rates vary per farm and soil type. Battery aid for top performance Lead acid batteries usually die prematurely from sulphate build-up on internal lead plates and, according to Gerard Anselmi of Recharge Battery Revitaliser and Conditioner, this crust is very easy to treat. “We have been saying for years that farmers are getting eight to 10 years in our battery conditioning program. However, most shows we do these days we meet people using our program with 12 and 14 year-old batteries often still going.” “In fact our record battery life is 18 years old and still starting a tractor and after 18 years on the market in New Zealand and 13 years in Australia I think we may do better yet.” The recharge treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid holding electrons. “We are chemically reversing the sulphate buildup. Once treated a battery is is essentially running at full capacity, provided the lead plates are still in good condition. Prevention is the key — treat them early, repeat every two to three years and keep them charged.” Recharge is available at Farmlands or Gerard and

Big on power and strength by Andy Bryenton

There’s an old question in this part of the world which can somewhat define a true petrolhead — are you a Holden or a Ford fan? To confound the partisans, and often simply because of their back-catalogue of muscle car legends, I’ve often found myself answering ‘what about Dodge?’ I have a par ticular fondness for large Dodge trucks — and for the rumble of a big hemi V8. I once drove a massive 1960s-era Dodge ambulance up from Coromandel to Auckland and commanding what felt like a great ship of the highway with that unholy reserve of torque was a formative experience. Dodge built — and continue to build — big, powerful, sometimes even brutal trucks which exemplify the allAmerican pickup. Wide, long, low-revving and with the power to rip stumps from the dry ground, these machines have long been imports here, as in most parts of the world. The UAE’s car collecting ‘Rainbow Sheikh’, with Lamborghinis and Mercedes-Benz models to spare, has said that his favourite vehicle of all time is a Dodge Power Wagon pickup. Now, under the name badge RAM, a range of big beefy utilities packed with proven power are coming direct to Kiwi shores. These pickups

have been remanufactured by legendary Aussie auto experts Walkinshaw — who you might remember for their special-edition Holdens — to meet local standards and requirements, but they remain bold, brash and unashamedly American in their sheer size and power delivery. Shock and awe? You betcha — and leave the Humvee in the garage. The RAM 3500 comes loaded with a hightech Cummins turbo diesel under the hood, 6.7 litres of displacement producing 276kW and a staggering 1,084Nm of torque. “We have deliberately had a soft launch for the RAM Trucks, starting with a preview at Fieldays, so that we could put everything in place to ensure that wherever a RAM roams in New Zealand, it will have the full support it deserves and to build a marketing programme that rams home the unique capabilities of the RAM range,” explained David

The RAM 3500 is imposing to look at and even more impressive when it comes time to tow those big loads

Smitherman, Chief Executive Officer of Fiat Chrysler New Zealand and the Ateco Group New Zealand. “But even with this low key arrival, we sold the first vehicle within

minutes of the gates opening at Fieldays. There has been steady stream of enquiries as word has spread about the arrival of the RAM 2500 and 3500 and the work that has gone into making it available here in New Zealand.” There are those who may question

the need for such a vast and powerful machine on Kiwi roads. Parking in the small spaces painted out by local councils may be an issue for novice RAM drivers. But then again, when it absolutely, positively must be towed, there’s not much which can

resist the unstoppable force of the RAM. Tested from the deserts of Arizona to the snows of Michigan’s upper peninsula, this is a machine with a heritage of toughness and a commanding presence even when standing still.

CANTERBURY FARMING

Working on agriculture emissions Federated Farmers supports the PCE’s call for a better approach to understanding the ways to control and reduce agricultural greenhouse gases. “We’ve always said the ETS is only one way to work on this issue and we’ve always insisted agricultural emissions should be measured and monitored from the farm level, not from processors. It’s good to see the commissioner coming around to this way of thinking,” said Federated Farmers spokesperson on climate change Anders Crofoot. Federated Farmers sees the report as a useful contribution to the ongoing discussion New Zealand needs to have about finding ways to reduce agricultural emissions. As the report points out, total emissions from agriculture in the last 25 years have increased by 15 per cent, while at the same time emissions from road transport increased by 71 per cent and

industrial processing by 45 per cent. “To achieve the massive change required to reduce agricultural emissions, we are going to have to work together as a nation and we are going to have to look for solutions based on new technologies, smart science and good research,” said Mr Crofoot. The report also notes agriculture has made major gains in controlling emissions while still increasing productivity, stating that emissions would be 40 per cent higher than they are now if gains had not been made through improvements like breeding more efficient animals and improving farm management. Federated Farmers does not support the inclusion of agricultural emissions in the ETS, because it would put New Zealand

producers at a severe competitive disadvantage on international markets. “We did support New Zealand’s signing of the Paris Agreement, because this country needs to be at the forefront of finding solutions to this issue,” said Mr Crofoot. “We don’t think the ETS is the appropriate tool for farming, but we will consider being involved in something else that makes more sense for farming. “We are dealing with about 30,000 farms which are very different, with very different environmental impacts. As the report itself says, we could be looking at huge variations in emissions even between neighbouring farms. “New Zealand farmers are totally committed to leaving their land in as good, if not better, condition than they found it.”

the ‘last’ word with Rob Cope-Williams

Being paid not to farm A recent story to come out of Europe suggests that dairy farmers over there are being paid to stop milking their cows. Crazy stuff, but I suppose it’s one way of reducing the milk lake that is affecting all producers. Figures being published suggest that of the 52,000 dairy farmers in Europe, many of them have rushed up to take advantage of the handout. That handout, incidentally, is worth about $233 million dollars so it’s not a penny from heaven. The industry is reported as saying that prices to the dairy farmer have dropped between 30 to 40 per cent of late, but it’s interesting that the prices in the supermarkets have stayed the same. Old story about farming, they take the drop in prices and others take the extra margin. Anyway, it seems

that the land of subsidies continues to cause chaos around the world. New Zealand went subsidy free decades ago and fought on with amazing skill and determination. How we as an industry have been able to survive is the subject of folklore, but we have. We know that cropping farmers in the United Kingdom are paid to let their properties revert back to park land so the city and towns folk can have picnics amongst the wild flowers and sweet smelling grass, but now the dairy farmers are being paid to join them. Seriously what will be next? Will we see the European Governments paying farmers to breed up feral deer so the rich can hunt them as they

did in Henry VIII’s time? If so I think it should be done as the medieval chaps did it so at least the townsfolk get paid as beaters. Ah, and perhaps instead of subsidising the costs of tractors, the government could swing that into buying nice cars for the farmers as that would help the motor industry, and manufacturers might rebuild plants in the UK instead of having them build in places such as India. Bottom line is that farmers being paid to not farm is as dumb as the Americans trying the decide whether their new president is a woman-groping ego mania or a lying and cheating person the rest of the world doesn’t trust. What have we done to our world?
