Flexible flood fencing

The Hawke’s Bay Farming Lifestyles is published with pride by NorthSouth Multi Media Ltd, a privately owned New Zealand company.

A new flexible fence may be the answer for keeping stock out of rivers that flood. Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is trialling 1.3 km of a flexible electric stock fence alongside the Tukituki River, near Craggy Range winery.

The Taragate system has been used successfully alongside rivers and streams in Northland, and the trial fence has been installed in a paddock, owned by Mick and Dawn Small. The paddock is periodically flooded and can be up to three metres underwater making it a good test location. “We don’t want to say we’d like a flood, but a goodsized event on the Tukituki will help us to know whether this fence is going to be a solution,” says HBRC Senior Land Management adviser, Brendan Powell. The fence is designed to be fitted in sections, and be easier and faster for the farmers to replace after any flood damage. Specialty Seeds have developed two “Graze n’ Hay” pasture seed blends to provide you 9–15 months of quick growing, winter graze green feed and/or spring silage.

Dairy cows are responsible for about a quarter of New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions. That’s the cost of supplying the world with dairy products. But it doesn’t have to be. Planting forests is an easy way to offset greenhouse gas emissions from livestock. An average dairy farmer could plant nearly two hectares a year in radiata pine to totally offset the gases their cows make. It wouldn’t even have to be on their own land. The farmers profit from the trees at harvest – and then replant. There’s a lot of win in this package.

A national environmental report backs up the direction proposed in the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s Long Term Plan, currently out for public consultation. Our Land 2018 is the latest report in the environmental reporting series published by the Ministry for the Environment and Stats NZ. It shows the state of our biodiversity and ecosystems and our soil resources is continuing to decline. “The report makes it clear that we need to pay attention to what’s going on in our soil and that our land use decisions are putting our environment under pressure,” says deputy secretary at the Ministry for the Environment, Penny Nelson. It comes as the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council wraps up a series of public consultation meetings for its 10-year plan called Facing our Future 2018–28. The proposals include a strengthened environmental focus, with emphasis on land, water and biodiversity. The plan includes upscaling and accelerating work in land and water management, with stronger regulation and more incentives for change. “The national report out today affirms that the Regional Council is right on the money with its 10-Year Plan,” says Regional Council chairman, Rex Graham. “This report makes for disturbing reading, but I am heartened that as a region we are looking to make changes to improve our land and waterways. It highlights concerns about soil erosion, intensive agriculture, and declining

by Ann Morgan Former Smedley Station cadet and FMG Young Farmer of the year competitor, Hamish Duff, has overcome major physical challenges to return to the land and do what he loves doing after a major car accident.

like rewiring the brain.” When Hamish was young family friends owned a farm, and he helped them on weekends and during holidays. “I enjoyed farmwork, and was accepted into the Smedley Cadetship in 2010. That was an awesome experience and I made good mates. A man called Josiah Howard, left the property to the Crown years ago, to provide agricultural training for young farmers.” “I learned everything about sheep and beef, and the course gave me good grounding. I am a head shepherd now at Pukemiro station and we have 930 hectares effective, and another block

he right side of my face had to be reconstructed using metal plates, and I had major physical issues after the car crash in 2012,” said Hamish. Hamish is pleased with his accomplishments since returning to farming. “I believe in having a positive outlook on life and when I had my accident, I didn’t want to sit around in hospital, so being positive was my only option. “I could still walk, but would often lose my balance. I also had physiotherapy for my head injuries, and exercises to make my body work properly again — it was

with a stock manager. I prefer sheep over dairy farming, because I find shepherding is multifaceted. We run 5,500 Romney breeding ewes and finish around 8,000 lambs per year. We have started training cadets and have three at present doing our two year programme.” Both farms work in together, and the flock is split up with two mobs of 2,000 sheep and a smaller of 1,500. “I started here in January and am still getting a feel for the place — it is great as my manager is open for discussions,” says Hamish. “I had the car crash after I left Smedley and couldn’t work for eight months. When I was cleared to work I did docking, but it was too physical, so I worked at PGG Wrightson until I fully recovered, and then returned to shepherding. “My first job was in Kia Ora Station, and we finished lambs and worked with thoroughbred horses. It was a great experience taking the broodmares to the stallions and foaling them — it was pretty impressive. “Here at Pukemiro, we have four dogs to move the mobs and a pup in training. I do a bit of a loop around the farm and do what needs doing. “We bring in the rams around the end of March and spread mating over the next couple of months. The first ones are terminals; each flock goes through at 10 day intervals. “At lambing we monitor the mothers to begin with, until a few lambs are in the paddocks then we leave them to it, because I believe you cause more damage disturbing them. We have good

Hamish also enjoys working with cattle and his dogs and says getting off farm for breaks is important results with this method — if we are driving around it disrupts them.” The property is hill country, and Hamish says the ewes lamb on the tracks where it is flat. “We contract a local shearing gang and are an eight month shear split flock, partly for cost factors, because six month shears would be four times in two years, but this way it is three times. It is also about animal health and when suits the sheep; and it helps with the flushing effect and producing more eggs per sheep. Before the ram goes

out, we give them a good boost with feed for more chance of producing twins — if they tick along normally with just maintenance, they will probably have a single birth, but we want to do better than that. “My future plans involve building up equity for a partnership or owning my own property. Although I enjoy cattle I will stick with sheep, as I find there is more freedom and variety compared to dairy farming.” Hamish says you have to stick at it during the tough times, and being in

the Young Farmers Club gets him offfarm socialising. “To survive in the industry you need to get off-farm. Farming will be around for a long time, there are people who will always want to eat real meat, and we need to make sure we learn to do things sustainably to have a positive industry in the future. I enjoy working outdoors with the dogs and being on horseback. It is great on a good day being out the back of the farm with a horse, and on bad days it is good to remember there are good days coming.”

Fulfilment in feijoas by Ayla Miller

When Heather Smith moved to New Zealand 22 years ago from Vermont, USA, she had never tasted feijoas before. Now she is making these small green fruit her life.

T

he first time Heather tried feijoas she knew she was onto something special. “If you asked most people in the states what a feijoa was they would never have heard of them,” she said. After some research she discovered New Zealand had the ideal growing conditions for these juicy green fruit and planted 2000 feijoa trees on her 680 acre property. As the fruit originally comes from South America few of their original pests have followed them, which makes them ideal to grow organically.

“We are certified BioGro — number 4868 — and we get a premium for our products. We have been working towards a genetically modified organism (GMO) free New Zealand as the market is demanding it more and more,” she says. Heather grew up rurally in the United States and has what she calls a ‘green background.’ “I was exposed to cows and chickens when I was younger and I went on to study biology. My grandfather was a farmer so it’s in my blood.” She was drawn to the idea of running an orchard as they create a habitat for

birds and biodiversity is a top priority for Heather. Passing on this respect for the environment is another passion. She regularly hosts young horticulture and agriculture enthusiasts as well as Willing Workers On Organic Farms (WWOOF). “Students learn about organics — soil health, moving animals, intensive grazing management — especially in winter, mulching, farm diversity, digging in the soil, vegetable growing, compost making, nutrition, pruning, tree care. Sometimes we milk our dairy cows for our own consumption. “We have been working 13 years with an agriculture school in France. Each year they send us a student as part of their internship programme. This winter we will host 15 teenagers and

faculty from the USA for a New Zealand adventure/agricultural experience. “A few years ago we made some field art saying GE Free NZ and you could see it from Te Mata Peak. It was in Mustard letters with flax/linseed background. I would love to do that again.” Heather’s feijoas are turned into a variety of different products so customers can enjoy the flavour all yearround and she also has a stall at the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Market. All her products are 100 per cent New Zealand grown, gluten free, GMO free and full of nutrition. The range includes: freeze dried feijoas, frozen feijoas, freeze dried feijoa powder, puree, juice concentrate and even Heather’s feijoa hydrosol/essence which makes an effective facial toner

and due to antifungal and antibacterial properties, can be used as a deodorant. As well as running the orchard, Heather and her farm manager also run sheep, beef, free-range chickens and collects eggs for the local market. The farm practises mob grazing, which is an intensive rotational grazing system based on the idea of grazing a large amount of cattle on a small

amount of land, for a very short period of time. Heather says there is a lot of new research coming out about the health benefits of feijoas. “It feels like we are right around the corner to discovering all its benefits and I want to put New Zealand on the map like we did with kiwi fruit, but this time with feijoa.”

Forest industry backs judgment

Forest industry associations are supporting penalties imposed in the District Court against Bay of Plenty forest owner Whitikau Holdings and two harvesting contractors. The companies pleaded guilty to charges laid under the Resource Management Act for damaging two stream beds near Opotiki in a logging operation, which began in 2015. Whitikau Holdings was fined $57,000 and the logging companies $4,000 and $3,000 respectively. Forest Owners Association president, Peter Weir, is pointing to the judge’s comments that the action of the forest owner was ‘extremely reckless and bordered on deliberate’. “From the facts as I understand them, this is not a case where a storm overwhelmed a logging site, but where the offenders just did not care about the clear rules on how to avoid damaging river courses, ignored abatement notices and produced a consequence, which could take a decade to come right. “They got what they deserved. They were probably lucky to avoid jail.”

Pay attention!

The Farm Forestry Association president, Neil Cullen, is echoing Peter Weir’s warning to errant harvesting operators. “This court decision highlights that there are forest owners and contractors out there who are ignoring best practice guides and directions from councils in order to try to save money,” he said. “The New Zealand Farm Forestry Association is hopeful the penalties in this case, and the clear provisions of the National Environmental Standard for Plantation Forestry will force such operators to change their approach, and take a more responsible attitude when they are harvesting.” The CEO of the Forest Industry Contractors Association, Prue Younger, says she is disappointed that some are putting the industry into disrepute. “With the recent introduction of Contractor Certification and the new

National Environmental Standard coming into play, the industry is clearly standing behind best practice.” Peter Weir says the National Environmental Standard will raise the environment standard for all forest operations. “The NES represents the industry’s commitment to a set of legislative rules designed to reduce the effect of forestry earthworks, harvesting and other activities on the environment, including an effective reduction of planting for harvest on the most unstable terrain in New Zealand, now red zoned. “Compliance with the NES won’t be a big stretch for larger companies with robust environmental systems, but it will require smaller players to set up to meet its requirements. Peter Weir, Forest Owners Association president “The NES won’t stop the cowboy operators who, through carelessness, ruin streams, wetlands rule-set and a clear mandate to protect and our industry reputation, but it will the environment. Parts of the NES will mean that councils have a consistent become a template for other industries.”

Finding seasonal work Minister for Social Development, Carmel Sepuloni, and Minister of Employment, Willie Jackson, have officially launched the Work The Seasons website making it easier for seasonal workers to find the job they need and for employers to find the right person. “Seasonal work can be a good option for many people looking to get back into work and for some; could provide the type of work life and meaningful employment they are seeking,” said Ms Sepuloni. “It has been hard for people in seasonal work to plan their employment and gain the skills they need for the next job. The Work the Seasons website puts seasonal workers and employers in touch with each other in one place.” Workers can see what work is coming up, and when and where that work is, across New Zealand. In the month since the website went live, 225 jobseekers have registered for work. “The Government is committed to providing seasonal workers with better training as well as work opportunities. One thousand training places have been purchased for job seekers that can be accessed through the website,” she said. “The Work The Seasons website has been a real partnership between the Government and business with input from seasonal industry associations from the horticulture, viticulture, hospitality, tourism, seafood and meat processing sectors.” Minister of Employment, Willie Jackson, said that the Work the Seasons

Understanding osteoarthritis by John Arts

My recent seminars included detailed discussion on osteoarthritis (OA) and the many things we can do to help. My introductory point was: that it is important to see osteoarthritis as a true disease process, rather than just wear and tear.

website helps address key employment issues for job seekers and employers. “We need to address skills and labour shortages and make opportunities like these more visible; so we can support the type of labour market booms we have had recently in the Hawke’s Bay, and attract and retain New Zealanders. “Anyone aged over 15 years and who is eligible to work in New Zealand (citizen, permanent resident or holder of a valid, current work visa) can register as a job seeker on the Working The Seasons website. “Work the Seasons is supported by 13,500 seasonal employers who can post jobs, manage the recruitment process and offer essential skills training. The Work The Seasons website is available at worktheseasons.co.nz.

An excellent research paper (Yudoh et.al, Arthritis Research Therapy 2005) took a detailed look at the processes that cause OA. In particular, they studied the chondrocyte cells that maintain and repair cartilage. What they found was that chondrocytes are very susceptible to damage by free radicals. While free radical production is a completely normal part of our energy metabolism if these are unchecked by antioxidants, cells can become damaged and eventually die. The researchers found that over time, free radicals damage chondrocytes to the point that they die. Once this happens, the tiny patch of cartilage it maintained will break down. Eventually this leads to loss of cartilage and subsequent narrowing of the spaces between bones. More recent research confirmed that accidental damage to joints, triggers the same destructive process. Physical injury to joints increases free radical activity, which damages

chondrocytes leading to cartilage loss. Mature chondrocytes have limited ability to reproduce. This is why death of chondrocytes is central to cartilage loss in arthritis. Any successful treatment must address the real cause, which is adding the antioxidants that can neutralise the free radicals that damage joints. One of my clients had diagnosed OA in his spine, but unfortunately could no longer tolerate antiinflammatory medication. I firstly put him on my multimineral/multiantioxidant and double doses of my high chondroitin joint formula. Within three months the back pain had largely gone and was much more comfortable. HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

WINTER FOCUS Preparing pastures for winter Winter in New Zealand can be a difficult time for farmers. After all, we aren’t called the Land of the Long White Cloud for nothing.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

This wet weather means there is an increased risk of pugging and damage to pastures, which can minimise farm profitability by reducing pasture yield of up to 80 per cent for as many as eight months. This affects cows’ body and condition and possibly — a cow’s ability to breed. Building pasture cover before the wet period, means the chance of pasture damage is less likely. Farmers can assess paddocks, which are most likely vulnerable to wet conditions in early autumn and graze them first. Another simple, but effective way to decrease pugging is to take cows in and out of different gates to spread the weight. Grazing from the back of the paddock can also minimise damage to the paddock, as the land is less trampled. Adopting an on/off grazing strategy is the most effective way of minimising pugging damage. This means the time, which stock are on pasture or crops, is much shorter. The rest of the time they can be kept

in a well-designed and managed standoff area. A cow can consume their daily intake in 6–8 hours so once this is complete, they can be transferred to a stand-off area to avoid unnecessary damage. This space should have enough area for them to lie down and be free from stones to avoid lameness.

A sacrifice paddock is one way to manage cows and pasture when there are no purpose-built stand-off facilities, or where off-farm grazing is not an option. They can also be used as a paddock when it is dry in autumn. By feeding supplements on a sacrifice paddock, it allows future paddocks in the round to build up pasture covers.

Better home and living Healthy homes for Winter Keeping your home warm and dry in winter can seem like a neverending battle if you aren’t prepared. However, there are some easy ways to make sure you and your family can stay healthy during the cooler months. The first step to making sure your home is warm and dry, no matter the weather, is installing good-quality insulation. You can put this in the roof, walls and even under the floor. The initial expense might be offputting to some, but it pays to look into applying for grants through Warm Up New Zealand: Healthy Homes for lowincome owner-occupiers and tenants. An added bonus, is that you will find heating your house is much cheaper as well, after insulation has been installed. It can be difficult to check if your home has wall insulation installed already or not, so if you ever have to do any renovations it is helpful to take the opportunity to check this out too. The World Health Organisation recommends

that houses should be kept around 18 C or higher for homes with elderly, the ill or children. A big part of keeping a house warm is deciding what kind of heating is suitable. If you want to heat a large room, an energy-efficient fixed heater might be a good option or, if possible, a fireplace. This could be a modern wood or woodpellet burner, an energy-efficient heat pump, or a four-star flued gas heater. An electric heater might be perfectly acceptable for a smaller room or rooms you only heat on occasion, as the initial price is low, but the long-term cost is significantly higher. Keeping your home dry, plays a big part in managing a healthy home. Eliminating dampness can be as simple

as drying washing outdoors, instead of inside, and using extraction fans in bathrooms, kitchens and laundry. Opening windows or doors also makes a big difference to create a draft and avoid unflued gas heaters. The recommended amount of moisture

in your house should be below 65 per cent. You can assess the temperature and humidity in a house with a simple and cheap hygrometer. This can help work out which rooms need attention regarding addressing dampness issues.

Style plus substance by Andy Bryenton

Everybody is in the SUV business these days — from Bentley’s massive, country house proportioned Bentaygo, with its emphasis on luxury, to Lamborghini’s Urus, which promises velocity. The dizzying array of choices has spawned another subspecies, which is definitely worth a look — the stylish, yet still determinedly practical upmarket off-roader. These are examples by companies, who approach the sports utility concept from its roots. In fact, both of the top examples in this field come from marques, which began in the mud and thunder of warfare — Jeep and Range Rover. Tracing their history back to fighting 4x4s, both the new Jeep Compass and the Range Rover Velar have come a long way, switching their fatigues for a stylishly cut suit in the case of the English offering, and the calculated designer ruggedness of a modern outdoorsman for the Jeep. The Jeep takes the lead, in terms of blue-collar pricing and built-in ruggedness, with the Trailhawk variant boasting all the hallmarks of a brand forged on trails like the challenging Rubicon. Its 2.4 litre Tigershark series petrol engine delivers 229 Nm of torque to the ground via the tried and tested Jeep Active Drive Low system — and no less than nine gears in a smooth automatic transmission. This is no school run faux-wheel-drive — underbody skid plates, red competition style tow hooks, hill descent control and even a rock crawling mode, make this the kind of machine that doesn’t understand the concept of getting stuck. At the same time, the cabin is a leather-wrapped cocoon of calm, and while the Grand

BATTERY ADDITIVE

Battery Revitalizer & Conditioner Cherokee heads up the range for luxury, this middle-sized contender provides plenty of space, plenty of comfort and real off-road chops. Of course, the Range Rover Velar is also the middle child of the family, weighing in below the formidable Sport and above the Evoque. It’s a study in style, looking jaw-dropping from every angle, but there’s been no compromise on power — a V6 under the hood delivers better fuel economy and lower emissions too. While the cabin is appointed with luxurious leather and suede, unobtrusive infotainment and climate-controlled

hush, outside this machine can tackle more than just the gravel driveway of a stately home. With 21cm of ground clearance, a 24 degree breakover and 30 degree departure angle, along with electronically intelligent four-wheel drive controlling the differentials, the Velar can go pretty much anywhere it likes. Very clever electronic air suspension works behind the scenes to keep all four wheels planted, and delivering power where it’s needed.

A lot of people in our Recharge Conditioning Program are getting 8 to 10 years out of their batteries. Just dose them when you buy them, treat them every two years and give them an overnight charge twice a year between treatments and eliminate the sulphation problem, A car battery can be treated for around $5.
