AgWomen is a year-long project celebrating and sharing unique stories from 365 different women, all who have contributed in shaping the primary industries. At the end of the 365 days a coffee table book will be produced sharing these stories. Chelsea Millar, founder and CEO of Grass Roots Media NZ, wants to honour women in the rural sector who she believes can often be under-represented. “There are many amazing women doing amazing things throughout our industry and they all have a part to play in its success,” said Chelsea. “We want to showcase a range of primary industry women by telling their stories digitally and bringing the audience on a journey to showcase and explore all parts of the industry.” The content, which comes directly from women who experience it first hand, will share the successes and hardships of the primary industry as they know it. Images accompanied with written stories will be posted on the AgWomen Global Instagram and Facebook accounts, as well as an extended story published as a blog on the website agwomenglobal.com. “This allows the audience a real opportunity to engage and share the women’s stories. Those profiled won’t only be from farms or the wives of farmers — they may be within a business that supports the industry; insurance, banking or media for example.” AgWomen has stories from women in New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, USA, Chile and Argentina, and hope to gain more locally and abroad. “We encourage women to contact us if they are interested or want to nominate someone to have their story told,” said Chelsea. “Please don’t think you don’t have

BY ANN MORGAN Duckingham Palace is the home to many white Indian Runner ducks including Lucky, Plucky, Jemima, Showduck, Gronway, Colin and Tony. It is also a haven for rescued endangered ducklings such as the Grey Teal, which get hand-reared and released back into the wild.

W

hen Stacey Austin and Larry Tessier (Sunny) moved to their property, there was a flock of Indian runners with 13 ducklings residing on the lake. “They are a lovely duck with great personalities but they are notoriously terrible parents,” said Stacey. “There were 13 ducklings and one was abandoned and all by itself on the lake, so I called it over and it amazingly came close enough for us to catch it in a net, and we called it Lucky. A couple of months later another lone duckling was peeping away by itself so we caught him and called him Plucky.” The pair happened to be a male and a female and Stacey says nature then took over, and suddenly they had ducklings everywhere.

“We house the babies in their own private enclosure and hand-rear them, they don’t go on the lake. We have 16 ducks in total at present and the number is growing. “The Indian runners are flightless and are amazing if you have an orchard or garden because their favourite foods are slugs, bugs and snails. “As long as you don’t have brand new seedlings in your garden they will remove the bugs for you and fertilise the garden as they go. The couple also feed their ducks cracked corn and chook chow with lots of fresh water, and Stacey says ideally people should have three females to a male. “They are amazing for people with lifestyle blocks and they get on with

other birds, but if you want to keep the line pure they need to be kept separate. “They are a very healthy bird, like all ducks they can get worms, but I put apple cider vinegar in their drinking water to avoid this — maybe a quarter of a cup to ten litres of water. “They aren’t really an eating bird but they are the most prolific egg layer, we get approximately 300 eggs per year per duck. “ Staceys says the eggs are approximately twice the size of hens, are slightly richer and great for eating. “They make the best sponge and meringues. If your recipe asks for one egg just use a duck egg. I love them. “The Indian runners make great companions and their lifespan can be 15 years. “They are super friendly with children and they don’t have sharp beaks like other ducks have. Their favourite treat is lettuce, they love it. “Our line is pure white but you can get fawn or a variety of different colours.

Stacey with flowers from around the property where the ducks clean around the plants, and fertilise as they go

They stand very tall and slim which is how you can tell they are a pure Indian runner. If it isn’t tall it could be crossed with a Pekin. “Indian runners are tall and lean and the female has a loud quack NZ wide supplier of 400+ varieties Quality hardened grades of ornamentals and natives for hedging, shade, shelter and erosion control.

Indian Runner ducks are a domestic breed that are ideal for lifestyle blocks and keeping vineyards, orchards or gardens bug free

that the male doesn’t. “The male’s tail has a flick in it, the female’s doesn’t. “They are real characters and all run in a pack and follow each other and stick together, if one runs they all run. They often don’t know what they are running for.” Stacey says if you get them young enough they imprint really well. If you feed them in the same spot daily they will always run to that spot to eat, making locking them away at night easy.

“They are happy to free range and do prefer to sleep outside under a tree in a huddle. “They are a domestic breed and we highly recommend them for vineyards, orchards or gardens, as they keep everything bug free and they fertilise as they go.” Stacey and Larry also started the New Zealand Endangered Ducks Society. “We run the NZEDS and we have dreams to reestablish endangered duck species. “We sell Indian runners and these sales

help fund the project. “We hand-rear and release endangered ducks including the grey teal. If we come across abandoned eggs we incubate, raise and release them back into the wild. We rescued around 45 grey teal in the past year. “We want to help save the different species that have become vulnerable.” Any information advice or support, contact Stacey or Larry at Duckingham Palace on 022 155 7907 or facebook. com/nzeds. HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

by Paul Campbell Lime Terrace, the home of the Hardy family at Makaretu in the Hawke’s Bay foothills of the Ruahine Ranges is at once the focal point of an extended family, a diverse farming enterprise, and a rural garden of huge proportions, with a touch of political comment.

T

he sprawling homestead has grown during the past half-century in which Michael and Jane Hardy raised five children, who in turn have added 15 grandchildren to the birthdays and Christmas gift list. While Jane tended the homestead, family and worker’s needs, and Michael strode the rolling hills tending sheep, cattle and deer on the eastern flanks of often snow-capped peaks, time was still found to create a garden that has developed into a showpiece, with extensive plantings that turn spring and summer months into a mini-paradise. “We found huge pleasure in the grounds of our home when time could be spared

from the family and farm regime,” said Michael. Adds Jane: ”There was not even a drive up from the nearest road in those early days, and all there was a shelterbelt of conifers on the western side of the house, which divided it off from the shearing shed and quarters that was the nerve centre of the farming operation. “The garden was often an exhausting affair, with plants nicely set out only to be blown down or washed away — and so we just started again.” The Hardy’s enthusiasm for the task finally saw a lawn tennis court carved out with the aid of discs and rakes and it became

QUAD BIKE SAFETY

Concentrate on the riding. Look where you’re going, not where the stock are going.

The garden is a labour of love bordered by camellias, rhododendron, cherry trees, magnolias and assorted deciduous plantings. Scattered through the one and a half hectares, vying with ornamental stumps from past and present tree-fellings, is a huge variety of rhododendrons that are the Hardy signature planting — more than 300 varieties that do well in the mountain climate and free-draining acid soil. Himalayan mountain lilies provide an exotic touch while bluebells, forgetme-nots and ajugas run riot. But it is in the odd corner and dell that one finds an added dimension. Pottery sculptures of past and present politicians, some gathering lichen, peer out of the garden in a touch of whimsy that provides Michael with an outlet for his rather irreverent view of those who take themselves too seriously. “People who take on positions of importance have to be able to look after themselves, and when they take

themselves too seriously, I can poke fun at them,” he says. “I’ve set some of them at ‘dog-interest height too, although when one particular persona arrived from the local sculptor, the dog ran away!” Nestled among the rhododendrons and ferns are the somewhat irreverent busts of former prime ministers Helen Clark and Jenny Shipley, former National Party leader Don Brash, former Labour leader David Cunliffe, and many more. “Some visitors wonder what the hell they’ve walked into,” said Michael. “But if they are offended?” — a silence says it all. On a more serious note, the latest addition to the garden is a memorial plot in honour of a family ancestor, soldier Lance Hardy, who died in Belgium at La Basse Ville in July 1917. A quiet memorial ceremony is planned for the 100th anniversary of his death, and in recognition of all

those who ended their lives in battle. The memorial plantings are propagated from cuttings from an azalea shrub that Lance Hardy planted the day he went off to war.

Splatter Services are a Hawkes’s Bay locally-owned and operated business servicing Napier, Hastings, Taradale, Havelock North, Waipukurau, Waipawa, Waimarama and surrounding areas. Splatter Services provide pest control, exterior cleaning, gutter protection, anti slip solutions and more to help the environment of your home or business. We believe communication is key and pride ourselves on our loyal customer base. Exterior cleaning of your home or building is essential to ensure the longevity of your investment. Our Splatter Softwash system treats moss, algae, mould, lichen, mildew, dirt and grime and spider webs. The system is very gentle and lengthens the lifetime of paintwork — saving on ongoing maintenance costs. Traditional pressure-washing is abrasive and can force water and debris into cracks and doesn’t solve the problem of algae, mildew and bacteria staining. We use a low pressure of 300psi and treat the ugly stains as pests and use specially formulated blends of detergents, and we achieve a 100 per cent kill of the fungal pests using biodegradable products. Our mission is: ‘To improve the safety of all people through the application of high quality anti-slip solutions to workplaces, public areas and homes’ and there is an answer to slippery surfaces. AS-B Anti-Slip has successfully been applied to slippery tiled floors in homes,

office buildings, restaurants, retirement villages and medical institutions. This remarkable surface treatment microscopically changes the tread pattern of the floor tile surface to provide dramatically increased grip for bare feet and shoes. It is not a coating, so won’t rub off, crack or peel. There is no discernible change in appearance, and the surface can be walked on immediately as it is fast drying. It can be applied to timber, steel, tile, concrete, vinyl, stainless steel or acrylic surfaces including decks, steps and ramps, ladders, paths, and shower trays. Splatter Services also seal concrete surfaces so that they are non-porous,

cleanable and non-dusting. This service is suitable for driveways, warehouses and many manufacturing plants. For gutter protection a range of gutter guards are available made of tough steel substrate and guaranteed to perform as effective spouting screens for a minimum of 10 years. No more clogged gutters, and birds and rodents are kept out of your roof. We can also eradicate pests from homes or businesses professionally and safely including cockroaches, spiders, rats, wasps mosquitoes, weevils, borer and more, and we provide top quality communication and guidelines for your wellbeing.

Ensuring good fencing Know Holes Baa-ed fencing contractors is a two-man team providing quality fencing, retainer walls and more to customers in the Hawke’s Bay region. “We create a safe and efficient working environment and are able to build fences for deer, sheep and stock of all kinds, driveways, farm boundaries or waterways and any other type of fence people may need,” says owner-operator Pete Maclennan. Pete has been involved in the rural sector his entire life encompassing all aspects of the farming environment. This has given him the all-round experience and knowledge to enable him to help and advise clients on the most appropriate fence according to soil and land type, and individual property requirements. “Expertise is huge when it comes to creating an efficient fence, I don’t think there is enough emphasis put on it. “Different soil types mean the foundations change and you need to change your approach to end assemblies. You can’t just run with the same sort of pattern all the time, so getting expert advice is always a good idea. You can easily double the life of a fence if you get a professional fencer to help you.” Good stock management and care is helped by ensuring your fences are in the right place on your property. Nelly, Pete’s ‘rubber tracked post rammer’, has increased the efficiency and safety of the job because the driver does not have to get on and off the machine as it can be driven from right beside the post driver.

Should I take Coenzyme Q10? by John Arts

Part 1 Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance essential for life. While we normally make all the CoQ10 we need, some people because of age, health problems or medications can benefit from taking extra good quality CoQ10.

“She can carry material, bulldoze lines, auger holes and ram or extract posts. She has low ground compaction, which makes her ideal for lifestyle blocks. “Nelly’s extensive manoeuvrability, and the fact that you do not have to get on and off her makes her not only great in tight and steep situations, but also makes her very cost effective.” Through the years Pete has adapted his business, the machinery and fencing techniques to cater for orchard and vineyard development and repairs, lifestyle blocks and of course conventional farming. Know Holes Baa-ed is able to advise on all types of fencing, or the age of your fences as well as good stock management through having the correct fencing in place.

KNOW HOLES BAA-ED

CoQ10 is essential to make the energy our bodies need. The final stage of making energy needs CoQ10 to shuttle the hydrogen needed to generate energy. If your levels of CoQ10 are low this can be felt as low energy, weak muscles and general fatigue. CoQ10 is also an exceptional antioxidant protecting cells and fats from free radicals. The most important antioxidant function is to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol as it circulates in the body. This is a critical part in our natural defences against blockages in heart arteries and other blood vessels. Possibly the most common reason for CoQ10 supplementation is for those using cholesterol lowering (statin) medication. The side effects of statins are so common that they are a diagnosable disease called statin myopathy. The most common side effects are muscle stiffness, pain and weakness. This can also cause general fatigue, which often feels like a lack of motivation. Statins effectively inhibit the enzyme

Fencing Contractors and More

needed to make cholesterol. Unfortunately this enzyme (HMGCoA reductase) is also needed to make CoQ10. Blocking this enzyme reduces cholesterol but also CoQ10 by as much as 50%. Drug companies are well aware of this problem and hold patents for combining CoQ10 with statins. Until such drugs are available I recommend those on statins supplement with 100–200mg of naturally fermented CoQ10. Adding a good CoQ10 alongside stains will in most cases protect against and often reverse existing statin side effects. My favourite is the well researched and patented US product CoQsol®. If you are unsure feel free to phone or email your questions. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. Better home and living Creating a healthy home Creating a healthy home and keeping warm, dry and comfortable is important for every family in New Zealand, whether it be an older home or a new build. A dry home is easier to heat, because heat distributes more readily through dry air, meaning less firewood and less power is needed to run household heaters or fires. A home needs good ventilation and insulation. Good insulation helps create a warm, dry and healthy environment. For older homes, ensure there is insulation in the ceiling and under the floor if possible, renew it if there are gaps or there is sagging in the original material used. Mould is created from a damp environment and wiping it away from the bathroom, household ceilings or walls does not fix the problem, and having draft coming through poorly sealed windows and doors also makes matters worse. Extractor fans in the bathroom and kitchen to remove steam helps keep mould at bay. Having a dehumidifying ventilation systems is an advantage, particularly when some of the nation’s main health concerns are respiratory illness such as asthma. Ensuring windows and doors are draft free and sealing well will keep the heat in and the cold out. Rubber seals are available at most hardware stores and

are easy to attach around the window and door frames yourself. Making sure your firewood is dry will also cut down expense, as dry wood gives off heat where as wet wood does not burn well. Keeping windows covered with drapes or blinds helps keep the warmth in and the cold out. Some people tape ‘bubble wrap’ onto the windows in winter as a form of insulation. Wool is a natural fibre and it is said that wool carpet outperforms nylon in repelling dust mites, a fact backed up by rigorous studies by the German Applied and Experimental Allergy Research Association. Wool is naturally resistant to dirt and stains, is flame retardant and is a nonallergenic fibre. It does not promote the growth of bacteria or give off harmful emissions, making it a better choice for allergy sufferers. Whilst on the subject of healthy homes, smoke alarms are as important as anything else. Ensure all rooms have working smoke alarms and that the batteries are checked every six months to ensure the safety of your household in case of a fire.

Sustainable solar a smart choice Irrespective of whether your decision to live rurally is for commercial or lifestyle reasons, solar power is a choice that has universal benefits, and award-winning Hawke’s Bay Freenergy Solar Solutions is the ‘go to’ adviser for the best option to meet your needs. Freenergy Solar Solutions, owned by locals Clive Aaron and Michelle Duncan, has a decade’s experience to draw on and, being independent, the advice and solution you receive is designed to meet your specific needs. “We can design a solar power system to suit your daytime energy needs,” said Aaron. “Whether it’s for your household energy consumption or an irrigation water pump or say a commercial operation like a winery, we can recommend the best technology. “We’re not a franchise; we’re not tied to specific products, which means we can work with you to identify what you’d benefit most from.

“Our recommendation is to consume as much of your own power as possible for best return on your investment. We can recommend load controlling technology to send excess power to where there is generally greater need.” All Freenergy systems use the latest quality components and all are battery ready, so energy storage can be added at any stage in the future. “We appreciate that it’s a new area for most people so we’re happy to walk you through the process, and from experience we know that people are pleasantly surprised at how affordable solar is,” said Michelle. “The return on

THE SHORT DROP LIMITED

Hot, dry summers and water shortages are major problems facing Hawke’s Bay farmers most years. Danny Angland and Quentin Hunter of Kereru Station had areas of productive land that lacked a sustainable water supply during the dry season and this wasn’t good for farm profitability. The solution was simple, but until recent years, impossible without advancements to solar technology. Kereru Station sits at the foothills of the Ruahine Ranges and had basic water reticulation. With the purchase of additional land, they needed to get it productive quickly. As the farm had a large dam, they discussed reticulation and pumping options. The traditional pumping solution for remote off-grid areas is to install a diesel generator to power any pumps drawing water from a source to a holding tank. Harris Pumps & Filtration were called in to scope the project. A traditional system came with daunting problems: getting fuel to the pumping station, setting up a maintenance regime, as well as serious health and safety issues resulting from the lack of all-weather access to the site. At that moment, Quentin saw the light — literally — the big, round, yellow one up in the sky and said, “Why don’t we try solar?” While the sun is a farmer’s friend, and a friend to all life, the

idea harks back to a winning military strategy; to use an enemy’s strength to your advantage. The plan followed that principle: to take advantage of the hot summer sun — the very reason the land was unproductive during the dry season — and use it to pump up to 30,000 litres of water per day. Harris Pumps & Filtration had been keeping up to date with advances to solar technology. They knew the cost of solar equipment had dropped to a point where it had become a viable, cost-effective option. They reviewed the

design and found a solution to fit Kereru Station’s budget with solar panels and pumps engineered to fit into a proven, tidy and secure installation. From day one, water flow exceeded expectations. The system uses eight solar panels to power the pump and meet daily flow requirements during daylight hours. The result: a low maintenance installation that delivers water from sunlight, with a solar water level indicator to relay real-time information back to the office. How’s that for being sun smart?

DUCK SHOOTING New rules for hunting season The Wellington Fish & Game region is now one of six adopting new loading rules as a measure for ‘sound’ conservation and sporting reasons. The new game bird hunting season gets underway on Saturday, May 6, and a three-shot rule now requires hunters to plug their shotgun magazines so that the gun holds no more than three shots in total. Other regions introducing restrictions on the number of shots are Eastern, Hawke’s Bay and West Coast, while Wellington and Nelson Marlborough are banning magazine extensions. Fish & Game communications manager Don Rood says the three-shot rule is simply another tool to help reduce pressure on game bird populations and provide more opportunity for other hunters. “We have to strike a balance between providing hunters enough ducks every season, while conserving populations for following seasons. We strive to achieve this with appropriate bag limits and season lengths,” he said. “The three-shot rule is another tool to help sustainability — that will help limit the number of ducks being harvested.” Mr Rood says that decades ago, when semi-automatics first came on the market, they were restricted to a twoshot capacity. “But these days, it’s possible to have shotguns with a capacity of eight-plus shots, so that six hunters on a pond could conceivably be firing up to 54 shots at a time. “The threeshot rule means hunters know their

shots are limited — which we believe makes them think more carefully about shot placement. “The rule makes game bird hunting more sporting as it reduces any temptation to continue firing as game birds are moving out of range — which reduces the chances of wounding a bird. “We have had positive feedback from hunters to say that ‘sky busting’ (taking too many shots at too long a range) is less prevalent.” He adds that Fish & Game is pleased to see the three-shot rule applied more widely “as we look to healthier game bird populations in regions such as Eastern, where the mallard population is on the way up.” Fish & Game rangers will take a firm line where the rule is concerned this season because compliance is “pretty easy and inexpensive to achieve.” The three-shot rule says that a shotgun magazine must not hold more than two rounds of any size, plus one more in the breech — three in all. The rule applies for all waterfowl including pukekos. Firearm safety rules should always be followed and a cartridge should not be put in the chamber until a shot is about to be taken. We advise hunters to study the game bird regulations booklet so they are very clear about whether the regulations apply in the regions they’ll be hunting in, Mr Rood says.

Silver Fern Farm awards Mangatahi farmers Paul and Marie Renton have taken out the Silver Fern Farms Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year award at the Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Awards. The couple run Glenmore near Hastings, as fifth generation descendants, and were to hold an open day on May 4. “We are still farming the original land that was purchased in 1858. We’re really proud of that and so thankful we’ve had the opportunity to do what we love and to continue doing it into the future,” said Paul. In the judging year, 2015–16, the annual feed intake ratio was 70 per cent cattle, 17 per cent deer and 13 per cent sheep. Awards chairman Peter Tod cited diversification as key to Glenmore risk

management. “The three stock classes give market diversification with the three processing companies providing a balanced market position while still giving consistency in their specialised area. The move from breeding to trading was a 10-year journey that was well thought out. This works in well with the strengths and weaknesses (mainly dry) of the property and with the passion of the Rentons, which is finishing quality stock.” Greg and Rachel Hart from Mangarara in Central Hawke’s Bay were named Panpac Hawke’s Bay Farm Foresters of

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

Uncommon sense

David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy

Being an ex-resident of Edgecumbe I feel compelled to share lessons learned from similar flooding in 2004, which caused complete devastation to our farm and business along with many others. Because of repeated flooding throughout history, particularly in the 1960s there was a plan put in place by BOP Regional Council to protect Edgecumbe and the lower Rangitaiki River from flooding. The Reid Central Canal, which runs parallel to the Rangitaiki River approximately one to two kilometres east, was set up as a second bypass river with stop banks creating a 200-metre-wide channel to take the pressure off the river banks in Edgecumbe town. This channel returns back to the river just before the sea at Thornton. This work was completed in 1972 and since then the weather cycle changed and 25 years have passed with lower incidence of heavy rain, so not causing major floods. Consequently the Reid Central Floodway has never been used. There is a spillway upstream from Edgecumbe where the east bank of Rangataiki River has a lower section, which is approximately 300 metres long. This spillway is approximately one metre below the rest of the bank. When water from the river overflows it follows the contour of the land and is channelled into the Reid Central Floodway.

In July 2004 the Rangitaiki River showed similar challenges to the April 6 2017 ex-cyclone Debbie event and problems with the floodway became evident. Mainly that the spillway to activate the Reid Central Floodway was too high so water was running over banks in other parts of the river downstream from Edgecumbe before the spillway had began working. Because there was no stress relief to the sodden banks of the river, in July 2004 the banks blew out just downstream from the spillway on the eastern side. Of course this immediately dropped the river significantly and the rest of the river was safe. The general opinion afterwards was that if the river hadn’t breached when and where it did, it would have breached the bank at College Road within Edgecumbe with devastating consequences for the town! Most of that breached water ended up in the floodway but with at least three times the design capacity. Within a couple of hours the uncontrolled water was topping the banks of the Reid Central and flooding farmland as it went.

Millions of dollars were spent to repair damage and millions more on lost production throughout the Rangataiki plains from that 2004 flood. Since the 2004 flood, investigative discussions have taken place. A plan was put into action and finance attained to fix weakness in the drainage and flood mitigation system, including the Reid Central Floodway to protect Edgecumbe. A great deal of the work was underway but not completed. The lowering of the river bank spillway to activate the floodway into the Reid Central canal was part of the unfinished business. On April 5 2017 at 7.24pm (during ex-cyclone Debbie) the BOP Regional Council announced an urgent warning stating: ‘Due to steady rainfall the Rangitaiki Floodway and Reid Central canal are likely to start operating as part of the flood protection scheme … ‘ This action was not implemented until after the breach of the stopbank into Edgecumbe town, which happened the next day. After the flooding into Edgecumbe and the threat of the second storm (cyclone Cook) and more rain, action was then taken. The Matahina Dam was lowered further to be able to contain more water and subsequently reduce the impact on the river. The bank of the Rangataiki River (spillway) was lowered approximately two metres to activate the floodway automatically. If the water rose too high again. This was the action needed to avoid the flooding of Edgecumbe so a little bit late.

April 2017

I drove through Edgecumbe on Easter Sunday and out to the farmland which was being pumped by tractors just like we did in 2004 on the other side. The devastation was overwhelming and totally avoidable. The plan to mitigate the flooding was excellent but totally useless without any decision to implement it at the right time. Ratepayers have paid for the flood protection, now those same people will pay again for the flood cleanup. Failure to proceed with the flood protection plan is disrespectful to the work and people involved in the making of it. And the unnecessary emotional cost of those affected? Utter despair!

Pond crust gone for 10th the cost?

Yep!
