by Ann van Engelen

Napier Boys’ High School students Finn Beamish and Matthew Halford, have been named the East Coast FMG Junior Young Farmers of the Year. The pair won the hotlycontested regional final in Dannevirke for the second year in a row and said they are excited to compete at the grand final again. Some 72 high school students from across the East Coast worked in pairs to tackle a range of challenges at Pukemiro Station. The modules tested the students’ practical and theoretical skills and included a quiz hosted by Te Radar. “We are stoked, my favourite module was getting to drive the New Holland tractor fitted with auto-steer technology,” says Finn. Finn is from a sheep and beef farm in Ongaonga and is a boarder at Napier Boys’ High School and hopes to secure a coveted two-year cadetship at Smedley Station next year. “I am looking forward to attending the open day in early June. It would be an amazing opportunity if I got accepted there.” Schoolmates Guy von Dadelszen and Macabe King took out second place. The pair also competed in last year’s national final in Invercargill. Both teams will represent the East Coast in the FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final in Hawke’s Bay. Isabel Greville and Kaylee Hutchinson from Woodford House placed third. “Hopefully competing at home will give us an advantage. We are really looking forward to it,” said Macabe.

Guy says they are feeling pretty confident heading into the grand final. “It is great that we know what to expect this time around,” said Guy Abby Strang, Stuart Addis and Chalkie Williams, from Tikokino School, won the fiercely-contested AgriKidsNZ contest. That regional final saw 144 students, working in teams of three, take on a series of fun modules including fitting tyres to a Honda quad bike, assembling a Hansen water system, a WorkSafe hazards challenge and correctly identifying different breeds of sheep and cattle.

Ben Gray, Sam Lawson and Rose Beamish, from Ongaonga School, placed second whilst Harrison Brown, Sheldon Brown and Harry Bourke from Pahiatua School were third. All three teams have qualified for the AgriKidsNZ Grand Final in Hawke’s Bay. Both events are a key part of the work being done by NZ Young Farmers to attract students into the agri-food sector and will take place alongside the prestigious FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final in July.

A FUTURE WITH BEEF BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

essica decided to push outside her comfort zone to extend her opportunities in the farming industry and won the 2018 Intermediate Ambassador award. “I had no idea what to expect when I first entered to become an ambassador but was excited to try something new. It is an honour to have won, and I am extremely excited to be part of an event that is significant to so many people. I learnt so much from the competition, and I have met many awesome people.

The opportunities that come from the event are endless,” says Jessica. “My family had Friesian bulls, but we didn’t have a stud animal or anything like that when I was young. Growing up I drenched the cattle, got them in and did the everyday farm chores. We are a tight-knit family, and we had around 1,400 acres — it was cool growing up like that. I went to boarding school at Waterford House because we were quite isolated and we decided to do something different. Boarding school

was definitely challenging being away from the family, and I loved going home as often as possible. It made me realise how much I loved the farm.“ Jessica became strongly involved in the Teen Ag club while at school as a way to stay connected to farming. “I have also been involved in stock judging days at A&P shows, Teen Ag days and other minor events. Doing lots of different things has given me a broad spectrum for the future. “I was pretty nervous entering to be a Future Beef Ambassador. The weekend was full of learning, competing and looking after your animal. I had no idea you had to weigh, wash and groom our animal on a Friday. It was a shock as I had never actually lead cattle until the event. I did have an understanding of how to be around animals, which made it easier, but I was an absolute novice. Everyone helps you if you are inexperienced, which was encouraging. The doors opened at 6am the next day to rewash and groom the animals and clean their beds in time for showing. “You are judged on all of these things if you are going for ambassador. Being an ambassador is a way to extend yourself and learn new skills like writing essays, a CV and apply the knowledge you have gained based on your age and you become a leader to other youth. The judges watch how you interact, help others and present yourself in all ways including animal showing. “As Intermediate Ambassador I won a trip to develop my skills. At this stage, I am still discussing my options, but am looking at visiting different studs

JESSICA IS INVOLVED IN CATTLE SHOWING AND JUDGING AND HELPS ON THE FAMILY FARM WHEN SHE IS NOT STUDYING AT LINCOLN UNIVERSITY to gain a better understanding of how they work.” At present Jessica is studying agri commerce at Lincoln University. “I am studying a BCom Ag because it is a broad degree and will allow me to pursue many options. During the holidays I help run the home farm, and I assist my dad at his job with cows and beef. I also help my grandpa with his bulls and sheep. “I also hunt deer with my family. We do this to get meat for the freezer and

relax with no phones or anything. I have my own gun and got my gun licence when I was 16 years old. I believe it is important to keep busy with the interests and am a strong believer that nothing gets handed to you. You need to put yourself out there to get to wherever you want to go. “Throwing myself into all these little competitions and shows has helped me to get established. My brother Ashton is also involved in stock shows and gives me a run for my money.

“Ultimately I want other people to experience the opportunities available. You can come from not knowing anything to becoming a great shower and stock judge. “I will always be working in the farming industry; it is so cool and more girls are getting involved now. At Lincoln, there is a lot of like-minded people who are all heading toward rural careers. I think farming will remain a strong and positive career for many people in the country.”

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

• BY ANN VAN ENGELEN • Anaru Wakefield and Monique Stewart travel the Hawke’s Bay region taking care of clients’ sheep shearing needs as they work together as a family.

“W

e own Lifestyle Shearing Hawke’s Bay. Monique’s parents own farms running sheep and beef, and I grew up in the shearing sheds because my family has always been in the industry,” says Anaru. “I attended Lindisfarne boarding school from year seven for education opportunities because my dad worked on a station. The first week was an eyeopener, and I missed home, but you do get used to it and make great friends. “My uncle was a contractor, and I started in the shearing sheds at 14 years old in the holidays on the press and learned shearing from the older guys. When they stopped for a break, I would jump on the handpiece and have a go. One guy asked if I knew what I was

doing and I said ‘yes’, but I didn’t have a clue and was all over the place, so he jumped back on and helped me learn. They used to shear for an hour and stop for a break, so I would practise then and to shear each sheep in five minutes. One day I shore two in five minutes, and that was the beginning of my career in the industry.” One day Anaru had the opportunity to fill in for someone who didn’t turn up to work. “I offered to help and shore a couple of hundred sheep that day. I was really excited, but the next day I was back on the press because I was a bit too young. If you start on the blades too early it isn’t so good for your back, which is still developing, I kept practising and got a full-time stand when I was 19 years old.

The mobile shearing lifestyle is a move Anaru and Monique made to be able to spend quality time as a family It is hard work when you are learning and to be a good shearer you need to be calm and relaxed with the animals, and they are going to kick because they are live. It is one of those things that if you put enough effort into it, you will get a lot out of it. We can start shearing 200 animals a day, and when you are comfortable, then you increase it to 250 — this is a good achievable number. The highest I have shorn is 460 sheep in an eight hour day. “Different sheep, have different wool, which means a different shear. Ten years ago a lot more sheep were shorn. I have noticed that the sheep are changing and getting bigger and you can’t necessarily shear 400 daily as the animals are getting larger.” Monique and Anaru began mobile shearing as a way

to enjoy family life. “I loved the shed but the days were long, with early starts and late finishes. I needed to prioritise my family because I wasn’t seeing my child Anahera. She has a heart condition and has recently had open heart surgery. Being mobile means some days I drop her to school and shear on some lifestyle blocks and then pick her up. We work where I am needed. Someone may have one sheep or 50 sheep. We also provide toenail trimming, drenching and lice and fly prevention.” Monique is a qualified nurse and helps with paperwork and any other areas she is needed. “On a lifestyle block, you should shear every six months to keep the animals comfortable, healthy and looking nice. My own sheep get treated

STUMPCHIPPING & MULCHING

Anaru says shearing is a career that provides many opportunities and the harder you train, the more successful you become every week; I constantly crutch them to keep the flies away and keep them looking good. We love travelling around Hawke’s Bay. Some places we had never been to, and we have discovered how awesome the area we live in is. We are on Facebook and put photos up of what we get up to as a way of interacting with the community. “The mobile lifestyle works well for our family. I have sheep on the brain and get fidgety if I am not at work. We get to show Anahera how to do the

job by placing her hand in mine and she shears. “These experiences make it all worthwhile, and she loves coming out and being amongst the animals as she plays shearing with her teddy bears. “Shearing is a lifestyle and way of life for many people. In the future, we want to own our own block, and we have received lots of advice from our clients. They have been very helpful with ideas on what they have done as we have helped them look after their animals.”

FISHING, HUNTING & DUCK SHOOTING

Guardians of the wild

Avoid Drink Driving BE THE SOBER D FOr A NiGHT

by Andy Bryenton

With duck season nearly upon us, and the promise of a crisp autumn dawn breaking over the maimais of hundreds of outdoors enthusiasts all over the nation, it’s a good time to take a look at how this time honoured sport with its added emphasis on harvesting wild food, benefits the environment.

You won’t find a bunch of people more passionate about our outdoors and wetlands than hunters and anglers. Those who get out among the wilderness, and those who support the efforts of organisations like Fish and Game New Zealand with their purchase of licences each year, are the ones who care about future stocks of game, about unspoiled places to hunt, and about the impact of introduced species. Through no fault of today’s hunters, those settlers of yesteryear tipped the balance by letting loose certain game animals and fowl; keeping those numbers in check is a welcome outcome of hunting activities. Added to this benefit, and the closeness and empathy with the land fostered by getting out amongst it; is the remedial work undertaken by Fish and Game to rebuild habitats for native

fish and birds. Wetlands, especially, have been destroyed by development all over New Zealand, but bringing back these varied ecosystems is a huge achievement for the guardians of our freshwater streams and rivers, marshes and lakes. From riverbank management, stopping the spread of pest species, and water quality data, through to opening up new areas for conservation and recreation,

the licence fees paid by hunters and anglers contribute to the betterment of the outdoors. On May 4, when duck season officially begins, many people will take home an ample supply of food for their families. Many others will share the beauty of the wilderness with friends and relatives. The work done using their contribution will go on long after the last thermos of tea is empty, and the last maimai is dismantled.

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

Apiculture supports unity plea Following a meeting with the Minister for Agriculture on the commodity levy results recently Apiculture New Zealand is supporting the minister’s plea for greater unity to address existing challenges around bee welfare and biosecurity, food safety and export regulations. “We advised the minister a ‘no vote’ for the commodity levy means we do not have the investment fund needed, nor the collective focus that is characteristic of other primary industries in identifying, deciding and actioning priorities,” says chair of Apiculture New Zealand, Bruce Wills. “This lack of collective focus makes it particularly challenging to deal with the known issues that face the beekeeping industry, but also to promote the opportunities. “One of the opportunities we raised with the minister is how we grow the value of our key native and pastoral monofloral honey. It has become a priority for beekeepers given the erosion in prices for all honey types other than manuka. The minister was receptive to looking at how industry and government could work together on identifying the value of other native and pastoral monofloral honey particularly in relation to supporting regional and Maori economic development.” The critical building blocks for protecting the term manuka and potentially other native monofloral honey like rewarewa and kamahi through certification trademarks and geographic indicators were already underway and are supported by Apiculture New

Zealand. Apiculture New Zealand’s board meets in April to discuss next steps and has already signalled its willingness to work with the wider industry to find common ground and look at what types of initiatives are needed to secure a strong and united future for the industry. “While it is on all of our shoulders to protect and grow the value of industry, the minister’s decision to take these further steps to help industry and call for unity is a very strong signal to all stakeholders, both in optimism for the future but for urgency to act now,” says Mr Wills.

How much better can I be? by John Arts

Part one The best thing about what I do is to share with clients health improvements they never thought possible. So here is the real question. How much better can I be? Can I have less pain, more mobility and more energy? There are two parts to any successful nutritional therapy programme. The first is the actual measures we use. That usually centres on making changes to diet, supplements and in some cases referral to other therapies. The second is time. We all want fast results when in pain. The problem is that the changes in our bodies that created the problem often occurred for many years. While some people do get faster results, for most it is perseverance during the medium term that really counts. Over the years I have come to realise that often small changes can make a big difference. Someone could be taking a joint supplement and be getting little benefit. We change the active ingredient quantities, and there are significant improvements. For example, someone contacted me with significant knee pain from

osteoarthritis. It was painful and limited his mobility. His only medical options were strong pain relief and a future knee replacement. We made a number of enhancements to his diet. In most cases, this was more about substituting one food for another. I made changes to his supplement programme in particular targeting 1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin, the same amount of glucosamine and a number of anti-inflammatory antioxidants including curcumin from turmeric. The results after six months have surpassed what he expected. He has much less pain and in his own words just the odd twinge. He is now able to exercise; he has more energy and feels better. HASTINGS

Exploring Cape Kidnappers on a Fat Bike from Gannet Bikes, at your own pace, is an option many families enjoy when visiting the Hastings area. “This special coastline, along a sandy, gravelly and rocky beach, next to striking cliffs shows the different layers of geology and towards the end of the beach you will discover the amazing gannet colonies,” says company owner Murray Franks. “This is a nature trip with a bit of fun and exercise thrown in and if you have never ridden a Fat Bike before, get ready to smile, they are a lot of fun for everyone and seeing the gannets when they are here and experiencing nature and geology of the area is quite an adventure.” For olive lovers, Telegraph Hill at 1279 Howard Street is an awardwinning producer of New Zealand olives, extra virgin olive oil and gourmet food products. They were the first producer of commercial table olives in New Zealand, and are now the largest producer of New Zealand-grown table olives. From beginnings in a shed on the grove, Telegraph Hill now produce 25 tonnes of table olives and extra virgin olive oil annually at their purpose-built olivery. You can even adopt an olive tree for a

year and twice a year receive a package of produce from your very own adopted tree. The shop is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday with free sampling and lots of olive trees to admire. Tourists and locals alike also enjoy the many other experiences on offer including The Hawke’s Bay Trails, which stretch across the Heretaunga Plains and weave between the twin cities of Napier and Hastings. Whilst the Hastings iWay Loop links to the trails for further exploration of the outlying district, including Havelock North and Te Awanga. The On Yer Bike Winery Tours offers the opportunity to taste some of Hawke’s Bay’s finest wines and food in the Gimblett Gravels and Bridge Pa Triangle wine growing regions. The terrain is flat and very easy cycling whilst the scenery includes vineyards, olive groves, horse studs, orchards and farmland. The ride is at a leisurely pace with mostly off-road cycling following the wineries bike trail.

It takes a shortcut through a working vineyard where riders can enjoy the ambience and surrounding countryside. The Hastings i-SITE Visitor Centre is in the heart of Hastings, and the staff are on hand to share information on what there is to see, do, eat and where to stay. From self-drive scenic tours, bus travel to other areas, trips to Te Mata Peak, and which are the best restaurants and motels, the i-SITE have it covered. They also have an array of local and New Zealand art and gifts available for sale to remember your trip to the area.

Better Home & Living

Your home your castle The Kiwi dream is to build a new home or renovate an existing dwelling, which has years of history back to its former glory. If this is you, and it is a major project, it is best to resist the temptation to manage it yourself, especially if you are not experienced. Although it may sound simple and exciting, managing a construction job is complex with many stages to it and should be left to an experienced project manager, or builder who knows council regulations, contract legalities and procedures. A builder will expect progress payments so before you sign a contract, check expected payment schedules, dispute-resolution processes and disclosure statements. Get your lawyer to double check your contract as this will protect you and the builder you hire from any misunderstandings. If you have trees that need to be removed, an arborist can do this safely and effectively, eliminating any danger you may encounter if you try to do this yourself. When it comes to choosing items such as whiteware, furnishings, landscaping or interior design requirements, your local suppliers and professionals are a good place to start. Whether it be blinds, fireplaces, electrical needs or carpet,

engaging someone from your area often makes things easier if you need anything rectified after or during the build. That helps build rapport, and local businesses often understand what local people need. When installing or relocating fireplaces within a building there are national wood standards and local council rules which apply. There are rules on what can be burned inside a fire such as no burning of treated timber, as this may result in harmful pollutants being released into the air. It includes timber from building sites, fences or decks as this may be treated. The air quality standards are national regulations and your fireplace supplier or installer can guide you through these. More information can be found on the Ministry for the Environment website mfe.govt. nz/woodburners. Hot water cylinders are another item with various options. Ask your plumber for suggestions. Do you want gas, solar, wetback or electric and what size would best suit your circumstances? Getting the correct size and type of product for your needs upfront saves a lot of time and hassle

when it comes to hot water requirements and ensuring you don’t run out during those cold winter months. The same goes for lighting. Talk to your local electrician about their recommendations for internal and external lights, and don’t forget driveway lighting for those night time requirements as well as security options for yourself and your family. Your home is your castle, and it is your prerogative to have things just the way you want. Your local professionals are there to help you achieve your dream.

Focussed on climate change New survey research shows farmers are focussed on sustainability and the impacts of climate change more than ever. The survey, by Nielsen Research, was commissioned by the Ministry for Primary Industries through the Sustainable Land Management and Climate Change Research programme. “These latest results show that 92 per cent of farmers are focussed on making their farm more environmentally sustainable, up from 78 per cent in the last survey of 2009. That’s really heartening,” says agriculture minister Damien O’Connor. “Some of the specific actions farmers mentioned were riparian/shelter planting, waterway control, improved fertiliser management and more efficient irrigation systems. That gives us a really

valuable understanding of what is front of mind for farmers. “Slightly disheartening is that only 23 per cent of farmers anticipate an increased focus on reducing their greenhouse gas emissions in the next five years, so that’s something for us all to work on.’’ Minister O’Connor says farmers face a changing climate. “They need to prepare to cope with the intensifying weather effects of climate change and at the same time reduce their environmental footprint. That takes investment in infrastructure and means you need to be financially viable. The coalition government

is scoping the development of resources and information for farmers to fill the knowledge gap in ways to reduce emissions, working with the sector to develop practical on-farm knowledge.” Minister for Climate Change James Shaw says that the results of the survey are consistent with expectations. “The survey shows that farmers have a better understanding of what they are able to do on-farm to be more environmentally sustainable, with the exception of greenhouse gas emissions reduction — an area where we know farmers feel they need more information and advice. “The Biological Emissions Reference Group report told us that there are lots of solutions emerging, but that the situation varies from farm-to-farm and so solutions need to be tailored. That is why we are now investing in developing that advice and integrated farm planning tools. We need to support farmers and growers to transition to sustainable land-use through planning and informed decision-making. “Last year the government consulted on the Zero Carbon Bill, which showed the need to give certainty and direction

on the pathway to a low-emissions economy. We will also soon receive the recommendations of the Interim Climate Change Committee on addressing agricultural emissions. That will help us move forward and provide the certainty that will enable rural communities to make long-term decisions.” The full report is available on the MPI website.
