Fish & Game manages sport fishing and game bird hunting across NZ and has had an unaltered structure since it was set up in 1990. The report is the result of a ministerial review initiated last year by former Minister Eugenie Sage to ensure Fish & Game’s governance and structure were fit for purpose today. New Zealand Fish and Game Council chairperson Ray Grubb says the review provides an overdue and welcome health check of the organisation. While it proposes some significant changes, he is encouraged it endorses Fish & Game’s core strengths. “It is encouraging that it is a ringing endorsement of our strong environmental advocacy on behalf of our 150,000 anglers and game bird hunters. It also provides a template for future results,” says Mr Grubb. The review report, released recently by Acting Conservation Minister Dr Ayesha Verrall, culminated in extensive engagement by independent reviewers. It recommends reducing the number of Fish & Game regions from 12 to six, the number of governors on each council from 12 to eight and suggests ways to include iwi throughout Fish & Game. Mr Grubb says the review panel went to exceptional lengths to canvass the full raft of views from both within Fish & Game and external stakeholders. “What the reviewers identified is a huge disparity in views on the future structure. The review report, therefore, provides solutions where consensus was not going to be possible.” The minister has established an implementation panel, which will also be chaired by Mr Grubb, as a signal that Fish & Game shall continue to manage its own affairs. The independent review found Fish & Game plays an important role in environmental advocacy and stewardship. It also identified significant opportunities to strengthen governance and management good practices.

Ray Grubb, New Zealand Fish and Game Council chairperson

“These opportunities to strengthen governance and good practice are something Fish & Game can proceed with immediately. In fact, some of these actions are already underway,” Dr Ayesha Verrall said. “A second group of recommendations would require legislative change. As acting minister, I am seeking further advice from the Department of Conservation on these, as they require careful consideration by the government, given policy and legislative implications. “In the meantime, Fish & Game has sufficient work to do on implementing best practice. The review gives them good guidance. An implementation steering group will also be established to monitor progress. It will be chaired by Ray Grubb and supported by senior staff from Fish & Game and the Department of Conservation. “I am now looking forward to Fish & Game adopting changes which will make it a much more fit-for-purpose organisation in terms of serving its core stakeholders, enabling Maori expression of rangatiratanga and in protecting the freshwater and other values so precious to all New Zealanders.”

The Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is proposing an ambitious tree planting solution to address the region’s significant erosion challenges in a way that retains and strengthens pastoral farms. Councillor Will Foley is excited about the proposed trial of the Right Tree Right Place programme, which he sees as having economic and environmental benefits for the farming community, local economy and wider community. Under the trial, the regional council would offer a loan and other funding mechanisms to landowners to plant trees on their vulnerable, erodible land. Manuka, honey, timber and horticulture are being considered, with the greatest potential to deliver a return and offset loan repayments. “As a farmer, this makes complete sense. Many farmers are planting and growing trees already in vulnerable areas, but we need this to happen on a much bigger scale to ensure our land is resilient to a changing climate,” he says. “For pastoral farmers, this programme will help us meet freshwater regulatory targets, provide a diversified income stream, help combat erosion, store carbon and strengthen biodiversity. It is a no-brainer, really.”

The regional council is proposing to pilot the new programme on up to five farms to understand the details involved in set-up costs, partnership and delivery options. “The regional council wants to partner with private landowners, investors and forestry companies to offer this tree planting solution, and the programme has already attracted significant private investor interest. “This programme is essentially about suppor ting pastoral farmers to strengthen their farm’s environmental performance, profitability and resilience.” Erosion is a natural process; however, human activity has accelerated the scale and rate of erosion. Around 250,000 hectares of Hawke’s Bay land is highlyerodible and vulnerable, according to regional council modelling. “We are facing a significant erosion problem as a region and we must do something innovative now to address this in the face of increasingly destructive floods and droughts. If the

pilot is successful, the scheme may expand considerably. As this is a regionwide transformational project, it is the regional council’s preference to fund the trial through returns from reserves.

If successful, the development costs of the trial will be reimbursed to the council’s reserves.” Head to hbrc.govt.nz to have your say on the proposal.

April 2021  HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

Pushing her boundaries by Ann van Engelen

Belinda Price took up the challenge to participate in the 2021 Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year award and was surprised when she came away with the title.

“I

grew up in the Far North and didn’t know how lucky I was. Mum and dad had a few different farming operations, including shearing and fencing,” says Belinda. “At one stage, dad went sharemilking, but it didn’t work out, so they brought a fish and chip shop at Coopers beach. This gave me both farming and retail experience.

“My husband Ben and I have sharemilked north of Whanganui for seven seasons milking up to 680cows. We are presently relocating to Taranaki as we brought a farm in Oeo, and staff have run the property for three seasons. “When I was first nominated for the awards, and I told Ben I couldn’t compete with past winners like Barbara Kruiger. I thought there was no way I was

that good. Then a second nomination came in, and I thought it would be rude to not try. “It was a pretty mind-blowing process, and I was surprised to get into the top three finalists and honoured to win. It made me step back, and I realise I must be using my skill set correctly. “I do a bit of everything, including the milking roster and taking care of the

calves, LIC and DNA reporting, office work and health and safety. We enjoy watching our staff grow and succeed in the industry, whatever that looks like for them. “Ben and I do our best to keep our farm as hazard-free as possible and are health and safety conscious. We make sure people know how to do things, and looking after mental health is important

to us. We understand the aspect of living and working in the same environment and want our staff to come to work. If they don’t want to come to work, there is an issue. “When you are a 50/50 sharemilker, you need to be the best you can and meet the contract and farm owners’ wishes. You must run the business as effectively as possible in that system. “We have done A2/A2 breeding with our animals because our son had eczema quite severely as a young child, and we discovered he could tolerate A2 milk. It wasn’t the science — it was that A2 worked for him. We are now working on getting our home farm up to our standard, and the staff will go on the journey with us.” Belinda, at times, gives staff ideas to solve problems, and together they decide what to try first. “I am also a rural support trust facilitator, and we always try to do performance reviews. We use a template for what is going well and what isn’t. I am a believer that there is a solution for every problem. “I want our staff to come up with solutions as well. Our roster is six days on and two off. It keeps things running and gives our staff a good break. I know some people have not such good rosters, and with me, it doesn’t sit well. We also try to get our staff off

the farm for learning experiences. Life includes being available and ensuring you have connections. You need a little toolbox of people who you can go to for advice. Having the right network and relationships and letting staff meet people they can keep connections with for the future is important. Ben has different strengths than me. He is hands-on day-to-day, and I see the big picture more. “I may not be on the farm daily, but I am working in the background. It is the same for the staff. Their partners at home are just as important to us. You need to understand their family dynamic, and if they need a longer lunch break or to go to family appointments, it should be facilitated if possible. “Employees do need to adhere to their work description, but it is also ensuring everyone is on the same page. “Farming is an awesome career as there are so many different facets. You need to keep your feet on the ground and know where you come from. A good team is like family, and knowing how each other tick helps. “We love that we can raise our children in an outside environment. They often help us with the young animals and planting trees. They are gaining skills that the next generation needs to have to carry on caring for the environment in the future.”

ohn Wyatt, with his wife Kristina working alongside him, was recently awarded the 2021 Taranaki Share Farmer of the Year title. His previous achievements included winning the 2009 Hawke’s Bay/Wairarapa Dairy Trainee of the Year and the 2015 Manawatu Farm Manager of the Year. The couple contract milk for Mike Hammond on his 106ha, 315-cow Auroa property. John grew up on a sheep and beef block near Dannevirke. At the age of 18, he switched to dairy farming, taking up a farm assistant position in the area. Three years later, he moved to work as a farm manager in Pahiatua before managing a farm in Manawatu. “I chose dairy farming because I felt that the dairy industry offered more

opportunities for progression to farm ownership than sheep and beef did.” John has completed levels two, three and four, and production management, as well as a Diploma in Agribusiness Management through Primary ITO. A four-hectare block just out of Hamilton was home for Kristina and her five siblings, along with a variety of pets. On finishing secondary school in 2005, Kristina completed a Diploma in Science and Technology then graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science at Massey University. She is currently working on papers towards a post-graduate certificate in science and technology through Massey University’s Master of Veterinary Medicine programme.

The couple met in Palmerston North and married in 2017. They have a 16-month-old son, Caleb. With Kristina’s love of working outdoors and with animals, her full-time position as a large animal veterinarian for Taranaki Veterinary Centre in Stratford gives her the best of both worlds. “I always dreamed of farming as well as being a vet in some shape or form, and marrying John, I have loved being able to combine the two.” The Auroa farm, on Egmont loam freedraining soil, receives an average annual rainfall of 1,500mm, making it relatively summer-safe. “The farm is run as a low input system, and we have found the farm can get short of feed through the summer dry period. To try and manage this, we put turnips in for summer feed, which worked really well, and we will break the farm record for production this season,” said John. “We have just passed 120,000kgMS for the season to date and will end up producing 400kgMS/cow. We take pride in producing high-quality milk and have been grade-free for the last three seasons and have a low average somatic cell count of 80,000.” John said unpredictable weather is one of the farm’s challenges. “It can make or break a season in terms of achieving production targets. We only buy in feed when absolutely necessary, and if it makes economic sense, otherwise we dry off early.” A wet spring, followed by drought during the couple’s first season on the

The farm can also be a hotspot for facial eczema. “We manage this by doing our own regular spore counts and spraying the pasture with a fungicide to limit the number of spores the cows are exposed to.” John and Kristina said it is amazing to be a part of the primary sector and know that they are helping to feed the world. “Working with animals is a real passion of ours, and dairying allows us to work closely with our cows on a daily basis. Farming is a lifestyle; it is a job that is 24/7. There is always work to be done, and cows have to be milked seven

He said attention to detail, and focussing on profit, not production, are strengths of his business. “Kristina and I work really well as a team. “I enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done and want to set a good example and create a future for my family.” Working together to achieve goals has been the key factor in the couple’s success. April 2021 HAWKE’S BAY FArMiNG liFESTYlES ADVERTORIAL

Helping Osteoarthritis (Part one)

I regularly find myself buried in scientific research, always looking to improve both my products and the advice I give. Ultimately, it is the real benefits people get that is important. If the best research cannot be translated into health benefits then it is of no value. One of the main differences between orthodox medicine and nutritional medicine is that, for good reasons, medical treatment is generally limited to those medications that are registered treatments using drugs that have gone through many years of testing. In nutritional medicine, we first gain an understanding of the disease processes. We then identify natural compounds that help. With osteoarthritis, this means adding compounds, most importantly quality chondroitin at 800+mg daily with glucosamine to impact the actual disease processes. Chondroitin is so effective that it is now available on prescription in Europe. Once we have helped correct faulty disease processes, we then focus on reducing inflammation, the cause of much of the pain and mobility loss. We identify dietary changes and

supplements that can help reduce inflammation within the joint capsule by adding curcumin from turmeric and omega-3 from fish oils. The outcome of improving joint function and reducing inflammation is less pain and increased mobility. I spoke with a client I have been helping for six months with knee arthritis. I put him on my nutritional medicine knee osteoarthritis programme, and he reported that his knees are less painful, have greater flexibility and do not click as much. Of course, I am delighted for him to be feeling better, but this comes as no surprise as this is a typical response for those I help with knee arthritis. The key to any nutritional therapy is to work to a personalised programme with regular reviews. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. For questions or advice, contact John on 0800 423 559 or email john@abundant.co.nz. Game bird hunting season begins With the Hawke’s Bay game bird hunting season opening on Saturday, May 6, Fish & Game officers are urging hunters to refresh their knowledge of rules and regulations before venturing out into the field. “If you are unsure of anything please contact our Fish & Game office to clarify the issue. The consequences for breaking the regulations are taken very seriously,” says Hawke’s Bay Fish & Game manager Mark Venman. Officers suggest each person takes the time to read the 2017 Game Bird Hunting Guide given out with the purchase of a game bird hunting licence. “It is a stand taken by our council in fairness to all the other hunters who do abide by them. Rangers will be checking game bird hunters throughout the season. Hunters need to have worked on their shotgun’s magazine to ensure they comply with the three-shot rule in force this season. “The three-shot rule says that a shotgun magazine must not hold more than two rounds of any size, plus one more in the breech — three in all. The rule applies to all waterfowl, including pukeko. Hunters in the Hawke’s Bay region are lucky to have a variety of species to harvest, including quail, pheasants, ducks, swans and pukeko. “Thanks goes again to our local reserves for their donation of more than 150 cock pheasants that were

released along our river corridors last spring. Results from the annual mallard banding programme indicate that we had a good breeding season. Coupled with plenty of rain throughout April, there are plenty of opportunities for hunters to harvest game birds.” Hunters are asked to report the details of any banded bird that they harvest. These reports are crucial to sustainable waterfowl management. Bag limits and species hunting seasons are available at fishandgame. org.nz/hawkesbay.

Better home and living

Stay dry to stay warm by Andy Bryenton

Winter in Northland is usually not so much a matter of cold, biting chill, but of damp and persistent conditions, which can promote illness and mould through an excess of moisture. Heating your home, whether by firewood, electricity or gas, is harder when the air is filled with moisture. Imagine the difference between getting warm while wearing a dry sweatshirt and wearing one that’s soaked through. The energy from your heat pump or fireplace has to heat the water molecules in the air to raise the temperature in the room, and it can be hard going. At the same time, warm and damp conditions are just the ticket for mould and fungus to take hold. What’s the solution when Kiwi homes are often built more to a northern hemisphere design than to fit our subtropical climate? The first step is to expel as much moisture as you can at the source. In winter, it’s not practical, safe or smart to have windows open day and night, so extractor fans in damp areas are your best bet. The bathroom and shower area comes first-equal with the kitchen when it comes to moisture output; both pump out steam with litres of moisture a day.

What’s worse is that modern homes are more weathertight than ever before. That is a good thing in many other ways but trapped moist air can’t escape via ‘unintended ventilation’, a nice name for draughts, gaps and cracks. Before winter, clean out your kitchen range hood and bathroom extractors. They may have built up dust, scurf, lint and grease during the year that’s affecting their operation. In some cases, replacing cracked or bent fans is a good idea too. If you have no extractor in the kitchen or bathroom, contact a handyman or grab a kitset from your hardware store. That leads to one of the biggest modern questions: will an in-ceiling ventilation system warm my home? The short answer is no, but the more complicated truth is that you’ll feel warmer if your ceiling cavity contains dry air. Most of these systems take dry air from in the roof, where there’s no respiration, cooking or cleaning being

done, and bring it into the home to stop window condensation and mould. The added bonus is that low-moisture air heats up more easily. Of course, it depends on your ceiling and your roof. A roof getting lots of sun, fitted with tar paper and insulation, will be a good source of drier air. A roof cavity connected via wall gaps to a damp

Better home and living

Bring out your home’s character

SMOKE ALARMS

Save Lives

by Andy Bryenton

Building fresh, from crisp blueprints and pen lines on clean white paper is one way to get what you want in a home. However, what if you’re working with an existing property, seeking to create your dream within the bounds of reality? There’s been a tendency to let the mode ‘du jour’ influence renovations to the extent that it denies the architect’s original purpose — an attempt to shoehorn aesthetics together in a way that is ambitious but doomed. A rustic cottage or colonial-era farmhouse lends itself to a sweeping renovation. The strong bones and rich panoply of woods and textures inherent in such dwellings provide an exceptional canvas to work with. Nevertheless, reimagining such a space through the stark lens of Scandinavian minimalism, for example, misses the mark. The current trend in renovations is to bring life and colour, if not a splash of personality and panache, to what already exists. Designers are increasingly encouraging their clients not to break the mould and try to force a certain style, with the idiosyncrasies of its era, on an established structure. Instead, the call is out to embrace the best points of the original and enhance them with minimal intrusiveness.

Of course, cramped kitchens can be knocked through into old-world dining rooms, and en suites and walk-in wardrobes converted from disused third bedrooms. That is the mechanical, nuts-andbolts stuff of a practical renovation. When reconciling these new additions to the character of the original building, aspects such as the palette of colours, the apparent era of finishing touches and the harmonious addition of chattels and fixtures is paramount. Similarly, the technology that makes a modern home healthier and easier to live in can often be tucked completely out of sight. Ceiling cavities, walls and floors contain the ducting for warm air or cool breezes, extractors for steam and odours are pared back from the industrialsized hoods and fans of yesteryear to blend into modern decor. Even vacuum cleaner systems, infotainment cabling

and security camera systems can be discreetly concealed and absorbed into the background aesthetic, be it rustic, baroque or modernistic. Better yet, modern fittings, lights, tapware and even items like speakers and control panels are now available in vintage looks, new shades and retro-inspired designs to avoid a clash of centuries when it’s time to add automation to artful antiquity.

Truck driver traineeship

April 2021

13

Social Development and Employment Minister Carmel Sepuloni and Transport and Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Michael Wood have joined the Road Transport Forum to launch a traineeship dedicated to the road transport industry — Te ara ki tua Road to success. “On the back of research that we conducted last year, trucking operators clearly identified a shortage of drivers being a problem for their businesses,” says Road Transport Forum chief executive Nick Leggett. “We believe in industry solving its own problems where possible, so we decided the time was right for a dedicated truck driver traineeship, run by the RTF for the industry we represent. “Trucking has an ageing workforce, and we want to bring a new and diverse range of people into the road freight transport industry. We want trainees to be clear on a career path and to be rewarded for their successes. “We believe that over time, this training will ensure a higher skilled and safer workforce, leading to safer roads.” Training is a mix of practical and theoretical components designed to lead directly to qualifications relevant to the industry. These are in the form of microcredential qualifications completed online and delivered through MITO. “This traineeship allows people to work and earn money while they go about their training. The traineeship has its own branding and website and

has two staff members, administering it on behalf of employers and trainees, employed by the RTF.” Trainees are on the programme for one year, after which, it is expected the trainee will continue on at the company they trained with. “Getting the programme off the ground in the quick time frame of a year would not have been possible without government assistance and backing. In particular, the Tertiary Education Commission and MITO have come to the party in getting the microcredentials available and waiving fees until December 31, 2021. “RTF is also working with the Ministry of Social Development on placing registered job seekers and those affected by Covid-19 with road transport operators. In fact, we are holding the launch event at Carr & Haslam in Auckland, which has employed three Te ara ki tua Road to success trainees via MSD’s Kiwi Can Do programme.” Chris Carr, from Carr & Haslam, says road transport is an essential service in New Zealand and it is essential that we attract good people to deliver the goods we all need.

Nick Leggett, Road Transport Forum chief executive

“Even in these early days of the traineeship, we have had three keen and motivated drivers join us,” says Mr Carr. “It is a new way of doing something about our driver shortage that we should have done years ago, and I commend the RTF for establishing this traineeship.”

Road Transpor t Forum New Zealand provides unified national representation for several regional trucking associations. For more information, go to the Te ara ki tua Road to success website roadtosuccess.nz.

grower mindset, along with empathy and respect for their experiences. Brydon has more than three decades of national and international experience in the horticulture industry. His career started at the grassroots in the summer fruit industry and then gradually grew into management, ownership and leadership in the pip-fruit industry. Brydon spent 10 years growing and managing multiple organic apple orchards for Bostock NZ. Liarna has been involved in the horticultural sector all her working life. She graduated with a degree in applied science with a focus on horticultural science at Massey University and has worked in orchard management, postharvest and project management within the kiwifruit industry. Mike’s career spans more than 30 years in the New Zealand food industry, mostly within Heinz Wattie’s. His key roles include six years as managing director and six years as marketing and R&D director. For five years, he held the global role responsible for Heinz Ketchup and Marketing Capability. Paula has more than 15 years’

governance experience in a variety of organisations, including sport, health, horticulture, hospitality, environment and philanthropy. She is devoted to her director roles alongside supporting her husband in managing their avocado orchard near Whangarei. All active growers will receive voting packs either via post or by email. These packs include the candidates’ profiles, information and voting papers. Votes can be cast in one of two ways: e-vote or postal vote. The election will be run by independent election management company electionz. Voters will be able to vote for a maximum of two candidates. Voting is based on a first-past-the-post system, so the two candidates with the most votes will be elected. Voting will close at noon on Tuesday, 25 May 2021. If you do not receive an email or voting pack by Tuesday, May 4, email Kerry. Norman@hortnz.co.nz. If you have any questions about the election, please call the Election Helpline 0800 666 043.

HORTICULTURE ADVERTORIAL

Horticulture Field Days breaking records Hawke’s Bay’s reputation as a primary sector powerhouse has been further cemented with the announcement that the 12th annual National Horticultural Field Days in June will be hosting a record number of exhibitors at the Tomoana Showgrounds. Organised by the Hawke’s Bay A&P Society, it’s the only event in the country exclusively dedicated to the horticulture sector. For two full days, industry professionals and enthusiasts will gather to network, conduct business, and share the latest trends in education and innovation. “Hawke’s Bay alone accounts for twothirds of all apple and pear outputs. This is one of the main reasons Hastings is home to this event,” said society general manager Sally Jackson. Event manager Kahlia Fryer said there would be more than 80 exhibiting businesses at the event, including some of the most innovative producers and companies in the country. New Zealand’s wide range of horticulture products are exported to more than 120 countries with a value estimated in excess of $8.8 billion. Key highlights of the field days include: • Hawke’s Bay Young Fruitgrower of the Year Competition
