“The contract is a significant endorsement for the New Zealand wool industry,” says Bremworth CEO Greg Smith. “The landmark Brooklyn Tower will have 550 residential apartments with multimillion-dollar entry points and will stand over 100 metres taller than the next tallest building in this borough of New York.” The $1.1 billion Brooklyn Tower will be home to hundreds of the city’s elite and will stand at 327 metres when it opens later this year, making it one of the world’s tallest residential buildings. “The new contract will see Bremworth supply over 3,000sqm of wool carpet for the 93-storey, super-tall skyscraper, and is one of the company’s largest-ever installations of its natural fibre product in the US. “The North American deal is the highest-profile commercial contract for the company since Bremworth’s wool carpets were used in the refurbishment of dozens of US retail outlets owned by Cartier, the luxury French jewellery maker. “The selection of our wool carpet for this project is a testament to the quality of both New Zealand wool as well as Bremworth’s manufacturing capability and is set to help open other export opportunities in this market.”

Mr Smith says the New Zealand made product commands a price premium in the US market. “Leveraging high profile installations such as the new Brooklyn skyscraper are necessary to help the company mitigate the impact of import tariffs that reduce our competitiveness in the US. “We know that consumers have had the last couple of years to review their interiors, as they have spent more time living and working at home. “As a result, we are seeing a conscious shift towards making their surroundings a more natural environment, as part of an enhancement to their overall health and wellbeing. “The US market has traditionally been dominated by synthetic carpets. As a natural fibre manufacturer from a country that is renowned for its environment and high standard of farming practices, this is creating a significant opportunity for us. “Our wool carpet retails at a premium in North America when compared to plasticbased synthetic carpets, which make up around 95 per cent of carpet sold in that country. “The use of Bremworth products in high profile installations such as the Brooklyn Tower and Cartier stores provides us with a unique marketing opportunity to grow our presence and exports of New Zealand wool in this lucrative market.”

A market for the community

Eleven years ago this May, Ōtāne Market was founded by Janis Page; it has grown to become an establishment for the neighbourhood.

The outside area at the Ōtāne Markets have stalls with craft and fresh produce for travellers and locals to purchase

The market is an eclectic assortment of stalls selling goods, fresh food and produce to the local people and travellers. Janis is proud to admit that it has only been cancelled three times, two due to Sundays landing on Christmas Day. “The previous owner of the cafe in Ōtāne and I were sitting outside having a coffee. I was working for her, and she asked if I had thought about using the Ōtāne Hall for a market,” says Janis. “I hadn’t actually. I looked at the Ōtāne Hall and the green space outside and thought it was the perfect location.

I spoke to the hall committee, who were agreeable, and it started from there.” Starting with 15 stalls, the number of regular stalls has almost doubled since its beginning. Janis says that there are four to five lifelong stalls that have existed since the dawn of the markets. “It is a selling point for the community. Some of our stallholders have gone on to have businesses by using the market as a platform to start from and have gone on to get a shop or sell online. I feel that we have helped them to establish their own businesses.”

Nana Mac at her stall, ready to serve her freshly baked goods to the community

For Janis, the Ōtāne Market is a place of community with a collection of stalls ranging from homemade crafts, upcycling, meals and fresh produce. Stallholders can enjoy free tea or coffee, offered by the market to give a little back. “It is the best thing that ever happened, and we are grateful to the people of Waitara and Ōtāne for supporting the markets. We are happy people, and it is a time to catch up and work together.

“It is even better than what we thought it would be. I thought it would peter out in one or two years, but we are almost 11 years old. We’re there every Sunday from 9am to 1pm. “I do it because I love it. We are a small rural community, which has become an establishment in Ōtāne. We are not money-making; it is a community market. Everyone is really nice, and we have a good mixture,” Janis says.

APRIL 2022 HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

A CULTIVATED

JOURNEY BY AMY FIFITA

Jo Duff planted roots in Hawke’s Bay in 2005 with the desire to explore permaculture by starting Kahikatea Farm.

“I

’m English, and my husband’s a kiwi. I’d always wanted to live rurally and go on a journey with permaculture. We were very keen on starting a communitysupported agriculture system. That is why we bought a piece of land,” Jo said. “We bought it in 2005, we moved our little caravan and built a shared attachment, and lived in that for the first four years. One of the first things we did when we moved here was to go to the local environmental centre to see if there was a permaculture group there. “There wasn’t, but there were some people who left their names on cards. We started a local permaculture group that still exists as an active Google group. “We wanted to build a straw bale house but couldn’t get it through the council in the way we wanted to do it. We ended up getting

a kitset board and batten 60 square metre house. It was the basic things that we could do for ourselves, like a compost toilet, water recycling and other ecofit ideas. “The house coming was amazing. I had my first daughter in the caravan, and then the house arrived on the back of a truck.” Initially, Jo and her husband sought to grow annual organic vegetables for their store but preferred the ongoing harvests that perennials offered. “We could see more value in perennials over annuals. We were working at the local environmental centre, growing our vegetable gardens, and that’s how it started. “I decided the nursery was going to be the future. Many permaculture plants I was reading about were hard to source in New Zealand, so I started an online nursery to supply them.

The nursery is Jo’s primary focus to provide perennial plants that had been hard to source in the New Zealand market

“One of the problems with permaculture is the name itself that a lot of people don’t know what it means, and they don’t get

past that. It doesn’t bring up anything for most people. It was based on the words permanent agriculture.

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

A wattle and daub hut started by Jo’s daughters Anna and Eliza during lockdown — it took two years and lots of community help to complete

“The concept of food forests is part of permaculture, but it has been very useful and popular in the past years. When you say food forests, people can actually bring a picture in their minds of what that looks like. It’s a really beautiful place to be.” Three acres of Kahikatea Farm are allocated as a food forest. The first shade cast by the flora was a highlight for Jo. “I can remember the point when the trees were tall enough to create some

shade. It sounds like a small thing, but when you buy a bare site of 16 acres in Hawke’s Bay and that fierce sun — there was no way to get out of it. The first shade was a good feeling that we were on our way to having a good food forest.” Jo runs a collection of courses each year. One is a four-day introduction to permaculture course focussing on designing space for food growing and efficiency, lasting approximately 28 hours.

“The principles give you a sound design framework to follow. People have gone away from our courses and think, ‘OK, now I understand how I can tackle this bare site and where to start’. “We do touch upon some of the other things, such as house design and the community side of things. You will get a foundation of ethics, which is something that drew me to it, to begin with. People who care and people

who share; that is how I hoped I’ve always operated.” The permaculture principle of spacesaving is ideal in urban settings and gaining the most cultivation from one planting as a sustainable alternative. Jo’s main focus is on her nursery, but she has many projects on the go. A long-staying couple with varied skills helps on the farm. “It is grounding to be in nature, and it is gratifying. I’ve always loved it.”

APRIL 2022 HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

SILVER AND WHITE BY AMY FIFITA Twelve years ago, Gus and Anita Smith moved to Hawke’s Bay with intentions to farm differently and started breeding Silver Appleyard Ducks and White Galloways.

“M

y wife said if we went back to farming, then she wanted to go to Hawke’s Bay, and we wanted something different on our farm. We are from the Northern Rangitīkei. It was great for farming, but you get rough weather, and Hawke’s Bay is a lot warmer,” says Gus. The duo have taken a rare breed each to look after and rear. Their main breeds are Silver Appleyard Ducks and White Galloways. “Anita looks after the ducks mainly; I look after the other animals on the farm. We’ve had the Appleyards for 10 years and had a few Cayugas and Pekin ducks for a year. “Some are more friendly than others; they’ll follow you around and go into the shed with you. Normally, they’re looking for food, and you can’t get away from some of them. “The ducks are good mothers and great sitters. They are easy to breed, providing

you keep down the predators. We don’t get many stoats and weasels, but hedgehogs will disturb the nests. “When they hatch, the mothers want to take them to water. By keeping them in a cage, and giving them enough drinking water the survival rate is high. “We’ve built a pond close to our feed shed where they spend the days and venture out into the paddocks to eat grass, clover, grass grubs and bugs at night. “If one has too many babies, you can give a few to the other mothers. They don’t seem to bother whether the babies are theirs; they like looking after them. The babies can tuck up underneath mum to keep warm at night.” The ducks lay in late May to early June and continue until October. If fed appropriately they can lay eggs daily and until mid-December in wet conditions.

Gus says White Galloway mothers will protect their calves especially if it begins bellowing

“Your grandmother may have said that duck eggs make a better sponge, and they

never knew why — the experts found out that they retain more air.

This White Galloway yearling bull is small and agile enough to climb the limestone bluffs on the Smith’s farm

“The eggs are about 50 per cent bigger than a hen’s egg and are good for baking, possibly from the higher fat content. The yolks are big and yellow because the ducks are free-range, and they eat bugs and grass all the time. “The eggs are colourful, and people either love them, some people will try them, and others don’t want to go there.” Gus’s rare breed interest is White Galloways. They do well on the limestone hills on their property and are used to rough terrain and winter weather. “They come from the Highlands of Scotland, so eating rough feed comes naturally. They are smaller and

don’t tend to have accidents on the limestone bluffs. “They are like most beef breeds but are more protective of their calves. You don’t want to approach or upset the calf because if it bellows, the mother will protect them. That mother, for the rest of the year, will let you pat them in the paddock. “We check to make sure the calves have not been mismothered or fallen down a bank. Otherwise, they’re what you call easy care. “The limestone hills are steep and rough. You can walk up and down them, but you can’t drive a vehicle up it. We needed something small and agile to eat the grass in these places.”

White Galloways sport a double coat that keeps them warm during winter and are not phased about the summer heat. “We had snow here about seven years ago. The other cattle hid in the forestry, and the Galloways stayed standing on the hilltop, chomping on snow and grass. “They have cute calves. We mainly sell the bulls to dairy farmers. They are sought after because they are ideal for heifer mating or used as chase-up bulls after finishing the AI process.

Running the homestay since 2007, Debbie’s most loved part of the venture is meeting new people and remaining in contact with some guests. “Many of our guests have come back a second or third time, and that’s the best feedback they could give us,” Debbie says. “We take time to connect with our guests and enjoy meeting people. They have their privacy, but we’re here if they need anything.” The structure was built in 1967 for visiting shearers who usually brought a cook for catering. The Shearers Quarters sits on a working farm, with guests often having the opportunity to observe how parts of the farm work.

Debbie Dooney has run The Shearers Quarters since the summer of 2007; she says it has a lovely view of the farmland

“The shearing gang would come, usually once a year, and most of the main meals would include mutton. Now, we shear at various times throughout the year, never taking more than a couple of days. It makes the need for shearers’ accommodation a thing of the past, here and on many farms. “I did it mainly myself. It took a lot of paint and magic to make it look like it is now. It was a little corrugated iron twobedroom cottage with a bathroom and full kitchen in a neglected condition, mainly for storing unwanted furniture and junk. “Our guests love when the shearers are here; most of them have never witnessed the sight of a sheep being shorn.”

Being brought up in an English village, country life was not familiar for Debbie until she married a farmer. She and her husband, Chris, enjoy the lifestyle with their three adult children. “People are friendly in New Zealand, especially in the farming community. It is hard work and fun. It’s not a leisurely lifestyle with much to do, but we plan breaks away and it is much better than office work. “It’s very rewarding and a lovely place to bring up children to have good values. I’ve been here 38 years, and I know if I go back, I’d miss New Zealand more than England. I do still have little prangs of homesickness that usually go away thinking about a UK winter.”

The miracle of your immune system (Part one) by John Arts

There are two main parts to your immune system: the NonSpecific (Innate) and Specific (Adaptive) immune responses. Non-Specific Immunity These include barriers like your skin, sinuses and mucous membrane and cells (phagocytes) that literally ‘eat’ pathogens that come through the barriers. Natural Killer cells attack anything that is not genetically marked as self — you! With a viral attack like Covid-19, the Non-Specific system launches into full gear with inflammation, which starts to make life uncomfortable for the virus and, unfortunately, uncomfortable for the infected person. However, this is just a holding pattern till our Specific immune system kicks into gear and our B cells start making antibodies that our T cells can identify. Those that are immunised have the advantage of vaccine generated antibodies — more on this in the next edition. Nutrients have a significant impact on our initial immune responses to attack. Vitamin D benefits most immune cells and helps them to do their job protecting you from pathogens like viruses. Vitamin D also influences the effectiveness of virus-killing compounds. I generally recommend

1000–2000IU daily in summer and 2000–4000IU in winter. Our NonSpecific immunity is also affected by micronutrients including zinc, selenium, iron, copper, manganese that help make potent antioxidant enzymes to defend against viral attack. Polyphenol antioxidants such as OPC, curcumin and those in green tea, beta-carotene, vitamins A, C, and E and folic acid are also very important. They protect immune cells against infection so that they can do their job. Secondly, these stimulate our natural killer cells, the most potent aspect of our NonSpecific immunity. What does this mean? Those concerned about their immunity should supplement with vitamin D and a good multiformula with the trace minerals and antioxidants that help our immune system cope with infection. APRIL 2022 HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

LEST WE FORGET

ANZAC Day 25th April

The great breakout

by Andy Bryenton

It will be 80 years ago this June that one of the most desperate and dangerous battles of the second world war was fought by the soldiers of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force in North Africa.

New Zealand soldiers march into battle in North Africa; 80 years ago this June, they carried bayonets and rifles against outnumbering, better equipped German forces at Minqar Qaim

bold plan was hatched to break out of the encirclement, with a midnight bayonet charge to catch the Nazi forces by surprise. At the fore was the 4th Brigade, which punched into the German lines, assaulting a foe who was certain that the Kiwis were set to surrender at dawn. Close quarters fighting of the most vicious kind broke out. Amid the fray was Victoria Cross recipient Charles Upham, who assaulted vehicles and gunnery posts with hand grenades at such close range he was hit by his own shrapnel. Before the gap could be closed by the outnumbering German forces, a convoy of

New Zealand vehicles came out of the night and desert dust, carrying every soldier and piece of equipment they could. The drivers had been given the order to ‘drive flat out and stop for nothing’, and their charge further disoriented Rommel’s men, creating a localised panic. Soldiers who survived the breakout describe the Germans as firing almost randomly, with arcs of tracer bullets shooting at aircraft that were not there. Some historians believe that the dust clouds distorted sound and gave the illusion of aircraft motors above. The breakout was decisive, savage, and miraculously successful. The Kiwi forces

fell back in good order to El Alamein, where a massive Allied defensive line was building. American Sherman-class tanks had landed in Egypt along with new, more powerful artillery, and the battle to come would finally stop the German advance and reverse Rommel’s fortunes. “Before Alamein, we never had a victory. After Alamein, we never had a defeat,” said British leader Winston Churchill. Despite the dire circumstances, New Zealand soldiers who survived the wild night of June 28 must have considered the breakout at Minqar Qaim a victory indeed.

Mauled in the latter days of Operation Crusader, the Kiwis had pulled back to Libya to recover. However, they were thrown back into action when Afrika Corps Field Marshal Erwin Rommel surged across the western desert, sweeping all before him. The New Zealand forces were forced to set up defences at the coastal town of Minqar Qaim, just 450 kilometres from Cairo, and were soon surrounded. By the night of June 28, things were looking dire. There was enough ammunition left for just one more day, and it seemed that the entire force of trucks, tanks and men would be captured or destroyed. A

A conversation in construction

Architectural design has long been the hallmark of exclusivity in building, and as such, there are many who think that the services of a talented architect may be out of reach for their build or renovation. This cachet is partly to do with results. Homes of the year and noteworthy builds that feature on television shows are always helmed by an architect with a vision. However, the services of someone skilled in design are neither as exclusive nor as expensive as the layperson may think. If you have a unique space to work with, then the input of someone qualified to span the worlds of the practical and the creative is invaluable. “Good architecture is the result of successful design collaboration between a talented architect and an enlightened, motivated client,” says architectural professor emeritus Roger K Lewis, and he’s quite right. Good architecture begins with finding someone who will share your vision and come and walk the land, take in the views, and listen to what you want to achieve. Here in New Zealand, that connection to the land is doubly important. A local architect will know how to make a new build one with the environment, framing the spectacular scenery, which is often the major allure for a spot in the rural countryside.

An architect is the first port of call when you want to turn your vision for a home ‘beyond the ordinary’ into a reality

Similarly, good design means a stronger foundation, and those seeking to build on the seacoast, in the hills or along lake and riversides need to find a solution that provides rocksolid stability. Architects who know the local area will often know engineers steeped in local knowledge and can draw from their previous experiences to

ensure a design that is both aesthetic and enduring. Architects are not builders, interior decorators or engineers, but they have a great knowledge of these associated professions and will often know specialists who can work wonders with their favourite materials and design technologies. This in-depth networking can expand your possible horizons when sitting down to design a build or major renovation, unlocking new options which you may not have thought possible.

HAWKES BAY

As Roger Lewis said, good architecture is a collaboration and a conversation. If your dreams for building and renovation are outside of the ordinary, it makes sense to engage a keen and experienced creative mind who can turn ‘it can’t be done’ into ‘let’s do it like this’. Start by looking through the portfolios of local architects online and find one who shares your aesthetic. It can also be an inspiration to break free of the ordinary and dare to build your dream rather than a compromise.

Returning fireplaces to former glory

by Andy Bryenton

One of the most enjoyable parts of a rural winter is the ability to warm your home with a traditional fireplace, and this time of year, many of us will be motivated to restore or upgrade such amenities. Those with older, classic homes built early last century may well have fireplace infrastructure hidden behind later refurbishments, during the era when older fireplaces were seen as a liability, and electric heating was the current vogue. There’s also the possibility that an existing fireplace or even a truly antique wood-fired cooker is in situ and requires some lateral thinking to replace as part of your renovation. Of course, when dealing with fire, even contained and tamed in a hearth, safety is the first consideration. A consultation with a fireplace installation expert is a good place to begin if you have existing blockedoff fireplaces or chimney works that could be resurrected to their former glory. Traditional standards and materials were less exacting than those of today. By the same token, things have come a long way in terms of compact and efficient fireplace replacements to fill large brick-lined spaces or replace rusting old fireboxes. Perhaps the most important consideration is the chimney itself. Brick structures and metal ones alike bear

the brunt of the weather and should be checked for stability before a new flue is piped through. Weathertightness is another consideration when opening up sealed-off fireplace spaces or installing a new fireplace where older equipment once stood. The good news is that options for a replacement can fit almost any decor style, from those blending effortlessly with the Victorian-era charm of a colonial fireplace surround to art-deco tiles or thoroughly modern designs. Local metalworkers and engineers may even be able to refurbish free-standing character fireplaces, such as the kettle-look copper-clad pieces beloved of the 1960s and 1970s interior decorators, ones now retro centrepieces. Efficiency is also a factor with modern fires. Many older coal-burning grates that were closed off in the middle of the last century can not be replaced with pellet burners or more fuel-friendly wood burners. It’s even possible to replace the cooking ranges in colonial-era kitchens with fully functional wood stoves freshly made with modern materials and technology. These can heat water, bake

bread, cook those old-fashioned roast dinners of yesteryear and make a rustic but functional showpiece that adds value to a villa or farmhouse restoration. All fireplace replacements require the correct paperwork and installation by a professional, so talk to your local expert soon to begin the process and explore your options.

of New Zealanders are concerned about “fake news” and its implications

Can solar work in winter?

Solar power has advanced to the point that it is no longer a fringe technology for off the grid applications but a savvy choice for all homeowners. However, even in New Zealand, where the climate is milder than in big solaradopting nations like Germany, people worry that their photovoltaic install or solar hot water heater will not perform when the clouds roll in, and temperatures drop. While it’s true that overcast conditions will cut the efficiency of solar panels, they won’t stop the flow of electricity or heat to water applications. Even in northern latitudes, where extensive long-term studies have been undertaken, a 12-panel solar set-up will provide enough electricity in a year to power a Tesla Model 3 for 28,000 kilometres of driving or run a dishwasher through more than 4,000 loads of dirty plates. These figures come from places like the United Kingdom and France, where it’s not unknown for snow to fall. Solar hot water heaters will still do an important job during winter. They can raise the level of the water in your pipes that crucial first few degrees before the element or gas burner picks up the slack. Just like getting a heavy truck moving, it’s the initial push that is heavy on energy expenditure. The sun will give this push for free, even on cloudy days.

While clear skies mean more power from solar units, it’s a fallacy to believe that overcast conditions will turn off the flow

For photovoltaic applications, the key to better effectiveness in the shorter, dimmer days of winter is a battery unit to level out the peaks and troughs of generation. Batteries are a sound idea any time of year, as peak power use usually coincides with the end of the day, when cooking, washing, gaming and media watching all combine to use more voltage. During the day when the sun is high, many people are away at work and the home ticks over on a minimum charge. Another possibility to create resilience is to think about augmentation. A small

windmill could pick up where the sun leaves off on truly inclement days, or a wetback stove could help generate hot water when a roaring fire has been lit for home heating. Here in New Zealand, we are all too aware sometimes that the sun’s rays can burn even through cloud cover. The inexhaustible nuclear furnace at the centre of our solar system has plenty of power to spare to make your electricity independent, even during winter.

Mighty mulchers make the cut

by Andy Bryenton

The evolution of the modern flail mulchers, a farmer’s best friend as autumn pasture management rolls around, has been a long one, with its origins far from the open fields. It’s a well accepted practice to mulch back overgrowth before undersowing in the autumn, setting the stage for organic decomposition to work its magic and renew the soil biota. Mowers designed to harvest hay are not truly equal to the task. Most farmers would prefer an even coverage than windrows of mulch, leading to the unique design of most modern PTO driven, tractor-mounted mulchers. These flail-type systems, with their many articulated heads, prevent clumping, which can suffocate the underlying soil. It is sometimes even implicated in the spread of issues like facial eczema, spread by spores. More flails mean more finely mulched material, and that’s good for coverage and the rate of decomposition.

It seems logical today, but the path from a traditional mower with spinning blades to a flail-equipped device is a long and interesting one. It begins with engineer, cricketer and ‘natural philosopher’ Edwin Beard Budding of Gloucestershire, England. In 1795, this man was trying to find a way to knock back grass and create a cricket pitch. He was inspired by a sketch of a war machine, doodled in the margins by Leonardo Da Vinci. The Italian inventor had thought up a chariot with rotating flails to knock down enemy soldiers, but Budding saw an idea to mow lawns. He switched the flails from horizontal maces on a wheel to articulated blades on a drum, and added a roller to create a flat wicket.

This season, flail mulchers will be hard at work sowing the ground for peaceful plenty after a history that started with ideas of conflict and cricket

John Ferrabee, owner of the Phoenix Iron Works foundry, invested in the plan, and 5,000 examples of the flail mower were built, revolutionising groundskeeping. Farmers would have to wait until Briggs and Stratton upgraded the concept from a mower pushed by one burly groundsman to a unit with its own

petrol power for the flail drum and until after the second world war for a device that tapped directly into their tractors. In between, the flail mower was once again adapted for war, as Da Vinci intended, this time being fixed ahead of tanks so the chain flails could detonate landmines without harming the vehicle.
