Maori committee chair retires After eighteen years on Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s Maori Committee, Mike Mohi’s last meeting as committee chair and representative for Tamatea Taiwhenua was in early August. Tributes were paid to Mike Mohi during the full turnout at Pukemokimoki Marae. Mr Mohi stepped down from the role as chair after nine years while continuing his focus with Nga Whenua Rahui and other work. His role was highly-regarded by his regional council peers, other kaumatua, the many organisations and individuals that he has worked alongside. Regional Council chief executive James Palmer expressed his gratitude for the commitment Mr Mohi has shown to the region, to strengthen the voice of tangata whenua both at a governance level, at a project level and across the organisation. “Mike has led the development of our cultural competency, chairing the Maori Committee since 2011. New forestry partnership A newly established joint venture between Maungaharuru-Tangitu Trust and forestry company Rayonier Matariki Forests centres on culture and commerce and will bring hapu forestry ownership to life. “Following our settlement in 2014, forestry ownership was identified as a key priority for our Trust, making this an exciting development,” says MTT general manager, James Lyver. “The venture, Kaiwaka Forest Limited, will realise forestry ownership and its long-term benefits for hapu. The venture will be based in the eastern part of the Esk Forest owned by MTT — the western part of the Esk Forest is owned by a neighbouring iwi. “Kaiwaka Forest Limited is an example of how we can leverage our settlement to advance hapu aspirations and improve wellbeing — all while staying true to te ao Maori values.” The name has been adopted to acknowledge the history of the surrounding whenua. Kaiwaka was one of the largest and most valuable blocks within the larger Mohaka-Waikare block and was confiscated by the Crown in 1867. The eastern part of the Esk Forest was purchased by the hapu as part of its Deed of Settlement signed with the Crown in 2013. As well as maintaining te ao Maori values, the partnership introduces a stumpage share model and management practices, which will improve the financial return for both parties. It will generate considerably superior cash returns for MTT when compared with the existing arrangement, which sees benefit only from rental revenue. “Our values and interests are closely aligned and partnering with MTT in this

ENCOURAGING FARMSTRONG’S VISION by Ann van Engelen A group of ladies are learning the ropes of the shearing trade as they join together from different occupations to compete at the Hawke’s Bay A&P Show to raise funds for Farmstrong.

“W

e want to support Farmstrong’s vision and get the word out there that there is help for farmers that are struggling,” says Maureen Chaffey. “We are from different industries and have never shorn before. It is very exciting, and we are extremely surprised by the amount of support we have. We are called Woman and Wool — Farmstrong Fundraiser, and we have a Facebook page for people to follow our progress. “We began training in March with shearing contractor Colin WatsonPaul of Shearing NZ, and Pura Smith — agriculture tutor from Turanga Araru. Our

training is every Saturday from 7.30am until midday. “There is an accountant, a police officer, optical technician, wool representative, dental therapist, rural insurance manager and a loans manager, and we will compete against each other on October 23 at the show.” On the competition night, there will also be an auction, and some amazing products have been donated. A chartered fishing trip for six, three tonnes of Ravensdown fertiliser and Farmers Transport have donated the service of a stock truck and trailer unit, just to name a few.

“Anaru Wakefield of Lifestyle Shearing Hawke’s Bay is donating to us all of the wool he obtains through his business leading up to our event. We can’t believe the generosity — supporters have been unreal.” Maureen was brought up on a sheep and beef farm and gained a diploma in wool and wool technology at university that led her into a career in the wool industry.

“Growing up, I was always fascinated with all aspects of farming, and it was only natural to end up in the ag industry, and I have never looked back. I help clients increase the value of their wool with wool preparation and shearing regimes. When picking rams to breed from, we not only look at the wool fibre, but also the sheep’s structure for growing meat.

“We need to continue preparing for the future of wool. People are thinking differently now and realise natural fibre is better for our health. Woollen products are becoming more sought after and clothes are now easier to care for, and the wool isn’t itchy like in the days gone by. “Wool carpets are so much better for our health as well as blankets — they are natural and warm, and wool doesn’t easily burn. “It keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter. Consumers are very aware of environmental factors, and they want more natural products. Kells Wool owner Richard Kells says “we are proud to support such an enthusiastic initiative that has a direct benefit to the rural community. “This matters to us and our own wellbeing should be at the top of everyone’s list. We were inspired by our representative Maureen and her commitment to this project. It is an awesome opportunity to get off-farm and have some fun and meet new people. Rural mental health and the wellbeing of farmers is important and under the big Farmstrong umbrella we can support each other.” The aim is to let farmers know that it is ‘OK’ to speak out if you are struggling. “Farmers have deadlines to get stock off to the works and weather situations that they have no control over, which can put undue pressure on them and their families. “Through Farmstrong we are seeing good things happening, including awareness and discussions and we

are really excited to be involved,” says Maureen. “People are amazed that we are learning to shear a sheep as it is a very physical job, but there is so much more to it as well. “You are working with a live animal and making their life easier by reducing the wool they have to carry, and they can grow better without the weight. “It prevents lice and ‘cast sheep’, which is when they can’t get up due to the weight they are carrying, especially

when they are pregnant. Pre-birthing shearing also means the mother will seek shelter to have her lamb, meaning a better survival rate of newborns. Less wool means easy movement, and shearing doesn’t hurt the sheep — it helps them. “We are all so excited to be doing this and appreciate the support Farmstrong offer people. “As they say on their website when you look after yourself, you are looking after your farm too.”

CROSSINGS CREATE EASY ACCESS AND EFFICIENCY ON DAIRY FARM. Around New Zealand more than 99% of all regular stock crossing points on dairy farms have bridges or culverts. That equates to more than 40,000 stock crossings nationwide. Young dairy farmer Hamish Robinson has carried out a range of projects over the last year to upgrade existing crossings or implement new drainage solutions on the Wyndham farm that he co-owns with his family. “For me it’s about making sure there is easy access to the paddocks for our stock and for all the farm machinery and equipment.” “With one of the pipes I put in there was already a bridge in WHAT: WHERE: PROJECT: WHEN:

egan will represent Hawke’s Bay at the Young Grower of the Year competition in Tauranga on October 1–2 after winning the regional final. The annual competition is run by Horticulture New Zealand to find the best young fruit or vegetable grower in the country, and Regan fought off seven other regional contestants to win the title. “There were only a few points in the win, it was a very competitive competition,” says Regan. “I had a very good horticulture teacher who showed me what opportunities there are in the industry. The dairy industry is set up, but horticulture has a lot of room for growth and is expanding constantly. In the Manawatu, there

wasn’t a lot that interested me, so I went to university and majored in a Bachelor of AgriScience majoring in horticulture. During summer I would work in Central Otago in the fruit orchards. That was interesting, and you met completely different groups of people and worked with a diverse range of crops. “After study, I applied for a graduate programme and was successful with T&G. I am in my third year now. Now my job entails pruning at this time of year, and I supervise and train teams of harvesters, drive the tractor and help with pest and disease control amongst other duties. “We grow many varieties of apples, including Jazz, Pink Lady and Envy. Envy is sweeter — Pink Lady sell well

in Europe as they are more tart as is Jazz. We thin and harvest the fruit by hand, and our crops are generally very positive. “The orchard is conventional and has a lot of food as well as health and safety aspects as we have many people coming through. It is all about educating our pickers and making sure they wash their hands and understand the rules on-site.” Regan appreciates the diversity of the job and meeting people from around the world who work on-site. “We look after the trees ensuring there is good growth opportunity by ensuring they are well maintained and have good soil and fertiliser when necessary. It is important to keep ahead of things in the orchard, and there is always something different to do like tree tying. “I entered the competition as it is a good opportunity to learn what you may not necessarily learn on the job. For me, the public speaking aspect was a real test. The next step is a massive challenge. I am looking forward to getting to know the other competitors. Entering such events helps to set you up for the future, whether you win or not. Your name gets out there, and you make great industry contacts. There is always something to learn from everyone who competes. We all work hard at our jobs, and Hawke’s Bay has all sorts of people from all walks of life that add value to the competition. “The management at T&G are so positive. They are great at training and looking after us, they value their workers and have been a great support to me

August 2019

MERGE LIKE A ZIP DRIVE SAFELY Regan is passionate about horticulture and believes it is an industry with a lot of career opportunities for young people

personally, during the competition. In my long-term plan, I would like to learn how people around the world do things in the industry and one day have my own company. “There is so much going on with new crops and new ways of doing what we already do — no matter how long you have been doing it, there is so much to learn.” Horticulture New Zealand chief executive, Mike Chapman, says the talent of young people entering the horticulture industry is superb. “Horticulture offers very varied and rewarding career paths as well as tremendous challenge, thanks

to changing on-farm and consumer demands. This is why it is crucial that we attract young people to the horticulture industry, nurture their talent and celebrate their success,” he says. Finalists Regan will compete against are made up of the winners from the five other regional Young Grower competitions held in Pukekohe, the Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Nelson and Central Otago. “The Hawke’s Bay competition attracts a wide pool of talented entrants. We are very proud to have Regan representing us in the final,” says Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers’ Association president, Ben James.

Time to get that prostate check!

ADVERTORIAL

Should I take coenzyme Q10? I recently wrote about coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). I was surprised at the amount of contact from readers on the subject of CoQ10, especially from those wanting help dealing with the side effects of cholesterol-lowering medication. Studies show that statins can reduce circulating CoQ10 by as much as 50%. The side effects are so common they are called ‘statin myopathy’. The main side effects are muscle and tendon weakness, which can be felt as muscle stiffness and pain. The effect on nerves can impact memory and mood and comment about general lethargy. In most cases, two months of a quality CoQ10 will reduce these side effects and allow people to get the benefits of the medication without side effects. The chemical structure of CoQ10 allows it to move high energy electrons within our cell mitochondria where energy is made. CoQ10 collects these electrons and transfers them to an enzyme called ATP synthase to make the energy we need. I prescribe CoQ10 for several reasons most commonly for statin support. I also add CoQ10 for those fatigued without medical causes and for those with cardiovascular, autoimmune and neurodegenerative problems. For example, I include

at least 100mg for those with Polymyalgia Rheumatica and higher doses for those with MS. For statins support, I use a high quality patented US CoQ10 and for inflammatory problems my mitochondrial support formula that includes high-grade Kaneka CoQ10 with a number of energy co-factors. It is interesting that the first improvement felt by those with these conditions is a lift in energy and general wellbeing. Those with inflammator y conditions, especially autoimmune problems, should be working to a personalised diet and supplement plan complementary to their regular medical treatment. Most people feel a real difference within three months. For more information give me a call or email. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Blue September is all about raising awareness, and fundraising to support men and their families living with prostate cancer. Organise a Blue Do and get family, friends, mates and colleagues together to have some fun, and share the message. Here are some critical reasons for men over 50 to get a prostate check: One in eight men will get prostate cancer It is the number one cancer in Kiwi men — more than 3,000 are diagnosed every year One man is diagnosed every three hours of every day of the year It is the third-highest cancer killer of Kiwi men — more than 650 every year. Currently, there are more than 40,000 Kiwi men who have been challenged with prostate cancer at some stage in their lives. Men with a family history of prostate cancer are at higher risk and testing should begin at 40 years. Research shows that our rural men in New Zealand are not good at getting checked. That needs to change. Early detection is the key. Don’t wait for symptoms. A recent survey has shown that 61% of men diagnosed had no symptoms, so getting that routine check is very important. It can save your life. Family members can be a great incentive and encouragement for the men in their family to go to the GP and get a check. Don’t leave it to the men —

they are often a bit slack in looking after their health. If they won’t go to get a check themselves, make an appointment and get them along. Find out more and register your Blue Do at blueseptember.org.nz.

This Blue September, join me in the fight against prostate cancer Whether you go little or large, it’s time to get your blue on for Blue September. This year, we’re asking you to get together and have a Blue Do – that’s right, a Blue Do – to help fund the fight against prostate cancer. 1 in 8 Kiwi men will get prostate cancer – so let’s go blue for our boys.

When the name says it all by Andy Bryenton

Car manufacturers, and to a lesser extent, their counterparts in the agricultural world, spend quite a lot of time coming up with the perfect names to market their products. Not so Krone, who, upon developing the most powerful maize and forage harvester the world has ever seen, took a look at its size and extreme capacity and called it the Big X. The Big X range spans medium to super-sized harvesting machines, but the stand-out top of the range is the Big X 1180. It refers to the staggering amount of horsepower generated by its 12-cylinder Liebherr-derived common rail engine, making it the most powerful in the world right now. With this big size comes some definite economies of scale; for example, the service intervals for components such as the oil filter and valves have been extended. It’s not so much the sheer brute force of Krone’s massive maize and forage machine, which makes it pack such a punch. It’s the clever additions driven by that V12 powerplant. Acknowledging the emerging use of forage crops for biogas, Krone has made it possible to select variable chopping lengths from 4mm to 30mm, without having to touch the chopping drum. For livestock feed applications, where the chop is longer than in biofuel sourcing, Krone’s VariLOC technology does the business, augmented by an efficient corn conditioner. The Big X

1180 uses massive 305mm rollers, with slanted teeth to ensure that every kernel is cracked for greater digestibility. These hefty rollers are carried by an equally hefty spring assembly, and, of course, all powered by that giant Liebherr 12. Precision continues into the cab, with a suite of electronic aids to help fill trailers more accurately and at greater speed. The operator has more control over the output stream than ever before, and additional data at hand includes the option to review the crop nutrient and moisture levels. The Big X even has eyes of its own; a photo-optical sensor in the middle of the maize header measures the maturity of the plant and automatically adjusts the length of cut. Between these and a range of other features designed to maximise fuel economy and minimise operator stress and fatigue, the Big X 1180 isn’t just powerful in terms of horsepower. It’s a powerful tool for making the most of a hard-earned crop, from the field to storage and use.

CROPLANDS SUPER SPRING SPECIALS

The grain of civilisation Maize is a huge part of the agricultural world a vital source of feed-out protein across our dairy and beef herds. It’s also a staple for the production of modern biofuels, with large areas of land in some nations now devoted to growing the crop just for the provision of liquid energy.

Maize had been shaping human society for centuries before the advent of biodiesel and the modern farm. The plant itself, as traded for by European settlers in the New World, was not even a ‘natural’ cultivar, but a carefully bred version of the ancient wild plant teosinte. This plant may have been domesticated up to 6,000 years ago, according to evidence found in the Guila Naquitz Cave in Oaxaca, Mexico. Maize was the cornerstone of empires, as it was able to be harvested, stored and transported. Hun Hunahpu was the Mayan god of maize, and not surprisingly this deity was high up the celestial pecking order. Maize benefits from further selective breeding today. A worldwide programme seeks to produce drought-resistant strains to help feed African nations, for example. Other initiatives include creating stains which resist insect pests and deliver superior yield. Key players in this process are the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, modern-day

‘disciples of Hun Hunahpu’ who invest heavily into studying the genetics, propagation and improvement of maize worldwide. With global maize production in 2018 topping 1,100 million tonnes, across applications from directly feeding human populations through to biofuel production, this is perhaps one of the most vital crops in soil, cultivated from the plains of the American midwest to the steppes of Ukraine and beyond. While New Zealand’s maize crop primarily goes to providing effective fodder for livestock, there are applications being developed which include maize-based replacements for plastics, maize-based ‘pellets’ to replace wood in heating furnaces, and even the use of the watery byproducts of maize milling to cultivate germs in the laboratory for medical science. In these many ways, the plant, which helped create the empires of Central and South America, and has had such an impact on our ability to feed a population in the billions, continues to shape civilisation today.

Cleaning out the woolshed Clearing out the manure from under woolsheds has become easy work with Cleansweep Woolsheds. Mark Turton, along with his wife Megan, has been servicing the Tararua area for more than 30 years with their Fencing business. Wanting to further assist their clients with farm maintenance, four years ago they introduced their new business Clean Sweep Woolsheds to the farming sector. After many years in development, the Clean Sweep Machine was launched at the Mystery Creek Fieldays. Mark has invented this machine that goes under woolsheds and pulls out all the sheep manure.

“I was giving a friend a hand to clean under his woolshed using a big sucker machine. It was a wet day, and we were spending all our time unblocking the machine. I thought there must be something easier and quicker to use for the job, but there wasn’t.” Mark came up with a hydraulic-driven rotary hoe system, which goes under the shed by itself, digging along the pile line for up to 30 metres. When it is full, the machine is hauled out and emptied. “Underneath the shed is a horrible place to be for obvious reasons, but by

using the Clean Sweep machine — you don’t have to be amongst it.” The system is highly versatile, able to be used in any type of woolshed, even handle the lowest of sheds. Clean Sweep is also ideal for cleaning the hard count out pens, and by using the Kanga and bucket set-up, they can clear away deposits under cover yards. The bulk of the work is being done automatically from outside the shed; it is not labour intensive, so is fast and cost-effective. It is important for woolsheds to be clean, he points out. “It creates a healthy space on many levels. The sheep have good airflow if penned overnight, and they dry faster. It also decreases wool staining, and

most important of all, it reduces the ammonia smell, which the shearers will appreciate.” The end product is great fertiliser that the client keeps. “Some people give it to the local school or club to sell, or they can spread it on to their paddocks.” There is a huge variety of woolsheds around, so Mark visits the farm first and gives a no-obligation quote. If you have not cleaned out under your woolshed, count out pens or covered yards for a while, give Mark a call and he will provide you with a free quote. NAPIER

Napier’s unique experiences Known as the Art Deco capital of New Zealand, Napier is unique and is also home to many fine wineries, restaurants, cafes and boutique shops that are a must-visit for those who are venturing to the town for a holiday or passing through. The transformed Marine Parade is a highlight for many people who enjoy a walk to explore the local environment on offer. Few places in the world have such a broad representation of the stripped classical, Spanish mission, and art deco styles within such a confined area and this is why the city has deservedly become known as the Art Deco Capital. Other activities include the Sunken Gardens where visitors and locals can stop, look and sit awhile in this beautifully planned and planted area. Being sunken and below street level gives it an interesting and special atmosphere, and an intimate, peaceful feel. The water wheel and the sculpture in the pond make the garden modern and tranquil. The prison audio tour is an educational experience as guests walk through New Zealand’s oldest prison. The 50-minute self-guided audio tour allows people to inspect the vacant prison cells and deserted exercise yard as they learn the history and experience the oppressive atmosphere of the hanging yard, the solitary confinement and hear the tales

of Australasia’s richest drug baron, and numerous escape attempts. Among the many attracts is Anderson Park known for the children’s playground, walking or riding, skate bowl and BBQ facilities. There are a variety of things for children to be engaged, including sensory music items, sound and water

play, things to climb, wobble and spin. Giant swings and hills to climb up and through, have a picnic, observe the ducks or kick a ball around in the park. The Faraday Centre is a great place to learn how technology has shaped people’s lives throughout the decades. Run by an enthusiastic team

of volunteers who all have a passion for history and technology, these often retired tradespeople and engineers love to tinker, fix and build things along with sharing their knowledge with young and older visitors. For more ideas of what to do in Napier, visit the local i-Site at 100 Marine Parade.

Blue sky thinking

The smart money on any upgrade to your home is on crunching the numbers, and in the case of photovoltaic solar, those numbers have been hotly debated. Here in New Zealand, the final verdict is that solar power is cost-effective, so long as 100 per cent of PV power is used on-site, and none is pumped back into the grid. That’s good news for those who want to sever ties with the wires and embrace rural views — like many of those building or renovating here in the Kaipara. Solar panels are proliferating across the country despite our government lagging behind other developed democracies in offering incentives and tax breaks for their implementation. At last count, the nation sported approximately 91 megawatts of solar power attached to homes and businesses, with 19Mw of that installed within the preceding year. The uptick has begun, and it’s being spurred on by large-scale projects such as the solar augmentation of Kaitaia College this year, where 368 panels now adorn the roofline. Kaitaia maybe a little further north, but Kaipara with its wealth of sunshine hours to match Nelson and Marlborough is also a prime spot to ditch the grid and adopt solar energy solutions. Between PV outfits for the roof, solarpowered pumps to channel water to

the tank, and the ability to mount solar panels to boats and campers, there are ample opportunities to turn the sun’s rays into real savings. Consider that a single panel averages at about $350 and that the turn-key price for a full three to four-kilowatt system has dropped by two thirds in the past decade. Kaipara uptake rates for solar power systems are trending at 50 per cent

higher than the North Island average and well above the national average, thanks to a combination of mild weather, ease of access to the technology, and the practicality of going off-grid in our many isolated rural and coastal communities. As battery and PV tech improves, it’s well worthwhile to talk to your local solar experts and plan for a future without monthly power bills.

Setting a new benchmark by Andy Bryenton

When Can-Am told us that their 2019 Outlander ATV would be more capable, more powerful and more precise than ever, we knew they had a tall order to fill. Then again, the modern era of automotive design has given us some surprises in this department, with new models surpassing their forebears in ways, which we could not have predicted. Indeed, the upgraded 2019 iteration of Can-Am’s popular farming quad looks the part. Fresh angles and a robust, ready-for-anything attitude dominate the design aesthetic, but then again, these machines have always looked sharp. It’s what’s under the skin that really counts. With the 2019 reimagining of the Outlander formula, there have been some significant upgrades. The first of these is power, which is now available from a single overhead cam liquid cooled v-twin. With eight valves (the magic number of four for each piston) and plenty of low down torque, you’ll see 48 horsepower from this mill, and feel it, too, thanks to progressively and automatically locking differentials to ensure less slip and more grip when things get muddy. The best is saved for the steering and suspension, however. With true independent rear suspension allowing the back wheels to travel directly up and down with no diagonal ‘butterfly’ effect, the back end seems planted like that of a rally truck. The front has also been tuned up, with improved dive-control geometry and a hefty amount of suspension travel, combining to make tight cornering far less stressful.

What’s even better, perhaps, is the icing on the cake. All these improvements add up, making a better all-rounder than the outgoing Outlander; but the cost has not gone up. For some models, it’s now more accessible than

ever. That’s the power of massive manufacturing and a testament to

the popularity of the Outlander brand worldwide.
