Estuaries will benefit Hawke’s Bay’s estuaries will benefit from a recommendation to target policy around their management, according to the regional council. The Managing our Estuaries report by the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, Simon Upton, has highlighted the complexity around management of the country’s estuaries. It recommends estuaries and the waterways that feed them should be treated as a single entity, from the mountains to the sea. “The parliamentary commissioner recommends that estuaries become part of the Freshwater Management Units under the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management. This is a good proposal as it means work would be prioritised nationally on linking freshwater limit setting to estuary health,” says Hawke’s Bay Regional Council chief executive James Palmer. “This complements the Action for Healthy Waterways policy reform package announced earlier this year, which aims to clean up rivers, lakes, streams and wetlands. “The proposals in this report and the Action for Healthy Waterways package would accelerate current efforts to improve the region’s freshwater and enable stronger, more targeted management for estuaries.” The land and river network of Hawke’s Bay terminates at the numerous large estuaries of Porangahau, Tukituki, Waitangi, Ahuriri, Wairoa

and Maungawhio. Regional council Marine and Coasts team leader, scientist Anna Madarasz-Smith, says many of the estuaries in the region are showing signs that there is too much sediment entering them from the surrounding catchment. “We are working with landowners to reduce sediment loads to our estuaries, but need better science nationally around how we link these reductions to better outcomes for our estuaries. They are significant areas and have extensive ecological, cultural, social and recreational values, but are sensitive to the combined impacts from the land and freshwater systems. “Many of the smaller James Palmer, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council chief executive systems wind through catchments to make their way to the coast delivering species in the definition of mahinga kai. sediments and nutrients to the coastal “Many of our taonga species spend time area. HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

Seizing an opportunity by Ann van Engelen Brandon Cross was born in Gisborne and has worked his way up to an orchard management position for kiwifruit orchard and post-harvest company Seeka through a chance meeting.

T

he 24-year-old, of He Ngai Tukairangi, Ngai Te Rangi, Te Whanau-a-Apanui, Ngati Porou descent is also an entrant in the Ahuwhenua Awards. “After leaving school I started to study at Victoria University in Wellington for a degree in commerce. I didn’t like the thought of spending another three years in a classroom and after two months left and headed home,” says Brandon. “I was introduced to Michael Franks, the CEO of Seeka and he offered me the chance to join his company so I did. I moved to the Bay of Plenty a few months later. The work is based around the kiwifruit capital of New Zealand, Te Puke and Paengaroa. “I grew up in Gisborne city. My parents are from up the coast and my

mum’s dad was a farmer, but I had no experience on farms or orchards before this opportunity. I am now in my sixth year here. When I first started with another cadet Levi, I had no specific interest in horticulture but have developed a passion for the industry. As a cadet and trainee manager, I was involved in a range of tasks especially during the harvest.” This included driving tractors and forklifts and working in the packhouse. “We undertook vine management including organising sprays, fertilisers, structural maintenance and cultural plant practices. The first couple of years were hard because I was still in school mode and wanted to chill with my mates and only worked for the paycheck. I am glad the company put

Brandon is now a manager and as an Ahuwhenua Awards contestant is looking forward to the competition results us through the hard yards first. It gave us an appreciation for the workers who do the mundane and hard manual labour jobs. This is the only job I have had so couldn’t compare it to other work, I just thought it was hard.” Brandon and Levi worked with the international workers and he says they are great to compare to for working hard. “We worked in the packhouse lifting 20-kilo boxes all day if we were stacking. You get tired and cherish your days off. In the orchard during winter you prune every day for three months. If you do just a week it is easy but pushing hard

non-stop for three months is hard. We planned to get where we are today. The cadetship started in November 2014 as a trial. We studied horticulture with Primary ITO to get advanced level four alongside our three years of training under senior managers as our mentors. “We experienced every single job including the processing in the cool stores. We operated all the machines, graded, packed and stacked the fruit to understand every aspect of the operation. “We began supervising in the second year including orchard pruning and

Brandon Cross says he took a punt when he was offered a cadetship with Seeka working in a kiwifruit orchard quality control. In our third year, we learnt organising, making decisions and running teams of staff. We then moved into managing more staff and one block of our own under a mentor. “I had never seen a kiwifruit on a vine before. I was asking thousands of questions a day to make sure I understood everything including pollination and cultural practices. The vines, maintenance and structural work are also vital. “To start an orchard we do the blocks, posts, wires and ag beam. Plant a shelter hedge or use shelter cloth for wind reduction. We plant the grafted kiwifruit plants or bare and graft the

variety later in the configuration of a row of female plants and then a row of males. We fertilise, condition the soil and string the vines in spring.” The vines grow up toward the sun over summer and the leaves drop in winter. “These are pulled down to create leaders along the lead wires and the process is repeated the next year until the shoots grow up the strings and you get fruit. “The process is repeated to create and maintain a kiwifruit orchard. “It is a fun job and I enjoy the harvest. A big part of my success was meeting people of other ethnicities from all over the world, working together to get the

job done. My favourite fruit is the green kiwifruit as it is not as sweet as the gold but other people love the gold. “I have recently become a full manager with more hectares and an increased portfolio. “I am looking forward to the Ahuwhenua Awards results. Seeka has looked after us and we are giving back to them, it is a two-way street. “They have invested so much into us and I really appreciate the opportunity. I took a punt on the job and am pleased I did. ” A

Trainee

ADVANCES CAREER by Ann van Engelen

Tom Quinn has only been in the dairy industry for two years, is a fourth-generation dairy farmer and now a farm manager on a 300-hectare, 800-cow farm.

T

he 24-year-old was named the 2020 Hawke’s Bay/Wairarapa Dairy Trainee of the Year and says the awards was an opportunity to benchmark himself against others at a similar level. He was a senior farm assistant on Selwyn and Jenny McLachlan’s 210ha, 920-cow farm whilst competing. “My great–grandparents started milking cows and my parents deconverted the farm 15 years ago to bull beef and cropping including maize for silage, wheat and barley,” says Tom. “I am heavily involved with my parents’ farm, and through my university years, I helped when I could. I am still heavily involved in running their business as well as my own commitments. “I really enjoy the variety of tasks that dairy farming offers. Competitions are a good opportunity to meet like-minded

people and rural professionals. You also learn new skills. “I have a passion for seeing livestock grow, develop and reach their potential. I am also passionate about food production, in particular New Zealand’s competitive advantage of low-cost production, with less environmental impact compared to other big agricultural nations. “I am working toward more of a dairy focus and I hope to grow a partnership in the future in the dairy industry. I studied at Lincoln University and planned to come out with Ag Science and work in the soil science sort of area but found myself loving farm management. “With dairy you can climb the ranks quite quickly and grow your business if you are happy to work hard. You get your tanker docket every day and see if you have done a good job producing

They help you expand and get clarity on how and why you do things on-farm that we may not already know. “Being involved in competitions is a good opportunity to upskill, and I like to think this job is due to my success in competing. Even with the lockdown, I managed to network and meet new people. The feedback from the judges has been really useful for areas I am working on personally. “I highly recommend dairy as a career. Working toward having your own business helps you strive with the opportunity varying from manager, to contract, to 50/50, and then farm ownership has a well-paved pathway. Dairy has a positive future. There can be some negative attention from media but the reality is we are world leaders in food production being pasture-based. We are the best in the world.”

less intensive. On the first of June we rolled over for a new year with calving. We are in the epicentre of the drought so we didn’t have much feed on hand. Plans changed but we will manage by adjusting our requirements with what rain comes. We have a calf rearer which takes the workload off us as we manage the springer and dry cows. “It is good having someone solely responsible for the calves because they have the eye for the details of each calf. They know if a calf isn’t looking as good as yesterday rather than various staff daily where you can miss the change in their health. “All in all dairy is an awesome industry — you can progress to running a farm in two years. It is not always ideal when you hear the wind and rain on the roof at 5am but the challenge of getting out there early is satisfying as you achieve daily. There is a lot of support through

milk or not. The variety of work is really rewarding, and I have gone from trainee senior farm assistant to my first management position. “I recently moved to Tikokino managing and am working with four other workers and the sharemilker. It is something different from what I am used to. I came from a system five high stocking and high input feeding in a barn and growing a lot of grass. On this farm we use a feed pad nine months of the year and the pasture production is 8–12 tonne compared to 18–20 tonne and we have different crops and things worked into the feed plan. “It is a good opportunity to gain experience from flat land to rolling country and brassica crops which are skills to move forward with. This farm has 800 cows on approximately 300 hectares versus 920 cows on 220 hectares on the original farm so this is

Should I take Co Enzyme Q10?

(Part two)

We generally make all the coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) we need. Some, however, should take extra as a supplement. CoQ10 is made in your liver from the same enzymes that make cholesterol. That is why drugs that reduce cholesterol can significantly reduce circulating CoQ10. I recently spoke to a client who had experienced a lot of muscle pain and stiffness while on statins. After just a month on highgrade CoQ10 (CoQsol) the pain had completely gone and is now able to tolerate the medication without side effects. I generally find it takes one to two months to restore muscle function and energy. Muscle issues from statin use are one of the most common reasons for muscle and tendon pain and weakness. It is a shame that many suffer needlessly as in most cases, are quickly resolved with a highquality CoQ10 without having to stop the medication. What makes CoQ10 unique is its ability to accept and donate electrons. That enables CoQ10 to move hydrogen electrons within your cell mitochondria to make the energy your body requires. Inadequate

Early prostate testing is a priority for rural men just as it is for those in urban areas because this deadly cancer often has no symptoms, and the PSA blood test is the crucial first indicator. In his role as medical adviser to PCFNZ, urologist Jim Duthie aims to reduce the number of men suffering from prostate cancer by expanding good testing throughout the country and encouraging early checks. “Guys don’t see enough doctors,” Jim says bluntly. “So, when they do, it’s important they make the most of that appointment.” Tackling a cancer that kills more than 600 Kiwi men each year is no small feat. According to Health Navigator NZ, men who live in rural areas are at

August 2020

CoQ10 levels reduce energy output, and this is felt as tiredness and often as muscle weakness. I regularly prescribe CoQ10 for those with health issues known to reduce energy, especially those with autoimmune or neurodegenerative problems. While CoQ10 is not a cure, it can help to lift general energy and well-being. In most cases, I will add CoQ10 as the patented CoQsol or my specialised MTQ10 formula for those needing extra CoQ10 plus a lift in energy. MTQ10 combines CoQ10 with a B complex plus other energy co-factors. Most people feel a real difference within one to two months. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. HOME&LANDSCAPING Build a bee-friendly garden

by Andy Bryenton

Nature’s pollinators, hard-working little honey makers, and a welcome sight to any keen gardener; Apis mellifera, the common domesticated bee, needs our help after centuries of giving to humanity by way of making our crops and orchards grow. If you want to pitch in, it’s easy to turn your garden into a haven for the black and yellow insects that support all horticulture. The first trick is to see like a bee. With their compound eyes tuned in to different frequencies from ours, bees love the colours blue and yellow, favouring flowers with these tones. They also like to spend time foraging in a single area. So mass planting of nectar-rich, old fashioned and heirloom varieties of flowering plants can provide a great feeding area for bees. Bees need water. It’s important to have a drinking source for them, especially during hot summer days when these flying insects can cover vast distances at the speedy clip of up to 24 kilometres an hour.

That makes for thirsty work, and therefore a few shallow saucers of water, topped up regularly, can make all the difference. Those with ornamental ponds should consider placing rocks within, to give bees a drinking point, or planting floating ornamental cultivars to fulfil a similar niche. A functional and beautiful herb garden is also a bee magnet, and can, of course, benefit your kitchen as well as the welfare of our insect allies. Rosemary is a heavy hitter in this regard as it can grow to hedge-sized proportions, but herbs like thyme, borage and sage are also favourites. Of course, lavender is a contender for most bee-friendly flowering plant, and it also brings scent and colour to your garden. Where bees really get to work is among orchard trees, so if you like

HOME&LANDSCAPING Building consents simplified

Avoid Drink Driving

BE tHE SOBER D FOR A NIgHt

by Andy Bryenton

May this year saw the proposal of radical changes for building consents, opening up more scope for easier construction without ‘red tape’. The big winners alongside landowners looking to upgrade were Licensed Building Practitioners. They can now proceed with many kinds of mid-scale work with added costs and paperwork swept away. The changes take effect this month. “Single-storey detached buildings up to 30 square metres (such as sleepouts, sheds and greenhouses, carports, awnings and water storage bladders) will now not require a council-approved building consent,” said Jenny Salesa, the government’s Building and Construction Minister in May. “Some of the new exemptions will utilise the Licensed Builder Practitioners scheme, which recognises the competence of these building practitioners and allows them to join chartered professional engineers and certifying plumbers in having their own suite of exemptions.” The new exemptions will save building owners time and money, by not having to access their local council for consent for what is classified as low-risk building work. Cutting back building consents is also intended to allow council to pay closer attention to larger, more complex building projects with deeper environmental ramifications. What does this mean for you, the home or farm owner? Single storey detached

buildings exempt from building consent increase in size from 10 square metres to 20 square meters, incorporating sleep-outs, garages, greenhouses, sheds and carports. However, a Licensed Building Practitioner will have to supervise the construction unless the building is an approved kitset, or made of only ‘lightweight building materials’. Exemptions also exist for ground-based solar arrays, flexible water storage systems for farms, porches and decks on the ground floor, awnings, and outdoor fireplaces and ovens. Any plumbing or electrical work must still, of course, be completed by a qualified professional. In most of these cases, consent is exempted most easily by retaining the services of a qualified builder of good repute. Those who

thought they could not afford to build, or that the process was too complex are now free to launch their projects and improve the value of their properties.

The skid steer concept is not a new one. It arose from the need to handle heavy loads in a tight and confined space, as typified by construction sites and barnyards worldwide. adjust the angle when lifting the arm. Additionally, there’s plenty of reach, with more than eight metres of stretch available, and a set up designed for easy dumping of the standard skid-steer trapezoidal bucket into truck beds. It’s an all-round performer with lots of scope for customisation, to tackle a host of farming tasks.

The engine’s common rail system electronically controls the timing and amount of fuel that is injected in stages, ensuring optimal combustion for greater gas efficiency, better fuel economy and less engine noise. Emissions have also been tackled, with the SSV series meeting Tier 4 requirements, largely thanks to the adoption of advanced exhaust gas recirculation tech downstream of its cylinders. Diesel particles are trapped in the muffler and automatically burned away in a controlled fashion to keep the little skid steer breathing easy. Clever thinking doesn’t stop at the engine bay. There’s more on offer for the operator to ensure a comfortable and easy day behind the controls. Give a small, hydraulically enhanced machine the steering system of a battle tank, and it can turn literally in its own footprint. Kubota is no stranger to improving small-format working machines, from diggers to tractors. So the move into the skid steer market was a natural one for the big orange brand. Their SSV series comes in two power levels, with the more potent SSV75 packing a little more punch to deal with arduous Kiwi conditions. It’s got a whole arsenal of heads and attachments to snap onto those hydraulic arms, making it a versatile little module for busy farmers seeking a mate for their big tractor. Kubota has armed their flagship skid steer with a 64hp engine they’re calling the best in its class, in terms of performance and reliability.

Getting the best crop Crop production forecasts for 2020–21 are largely positive and good yields will play a large part in primary industry playing a saviour role in the New Zealand post-Covid economy. Good grain production is vital to the food supply and yields have steadily increased over time due to better corn hybrids and planting practices. Technologies allow better soil, understanding and what nutrients will improve production — in short, science and technology have positively affected New Zealand’s production results. Crop yields not only determine farming success, but they contribute significantly to what’s in the bank at the end of the season. There are a number of factors to consider in increasing productivity for maize crops, covering soil quality, seeds, and planting practices to determine the overall strength of the final product. Using strong hybrid seed with the strength to sustain conditions and then choosing the right one to sow is often the most important part of planting. Planting early can result in increased yields by taking advantage of unexpectedly early favourable soil

conditions. It is not just enough to plant your seeds and hope for the best, you should always be sure to understand your field’s growth potential. Crop producers typically have an estimated idea of the yield potential of their seeds. Understanding this will help manage not only your expectations but indicate whether or not your yield potential is matching your actual production. Rainfall is pretty much the norm in crop growing in New Zealand conditions so there is always a major factor in the lap of the growing gods. Fertilisers are an obviously important part of maintaining optimal soil conditions and adding at seeding can give a boost to growth helping provide the seeds with essential nutrients like potassium, phosphorus and calcium. The root-zone at the base of your crops is the most important area to facilitate growth so your corn can thrive and

produce an impressive yield. Soil testing should be on your to-do list right from the beginning. Examining the phosphorus, potassium and fertilisation levels will give you insight into how to handle your crops. It will also let you know when proper soil conditions are forming, such as the optimal density and right amount of nutrients, so you are ready to start planting.

RURAL CONTRACTORS & SUPPLIERS Bridging the technology gap by Andy Bryenton

Hydraulic excavators are the driving force behind most modern construction, with their action that mimics that movement of a human arm substituting pistons and hoses for muscles. The father of this technology was inspired by watching a water wheel while on a fishing trip in the 1840s. Sir William Armstrong noted that the wheel wasted much of the power of the river he was standing in, and wondered if a system of pipes would help channel the flow. That led him to look at the works of earlier experimenters, like Da Vinci and the ancient Greeks and Romans, who had developed musical instruments powered by water pressure. Fellow Englishman Joseph Bramah had invented the hydraulic press two almost half a century earlier. Still, Armstrong became convinced that the future of hydraulics wasn’t in pushing down, but in lifting things up. He developed a system for the port of Newcastle, where the city’s new piped water system had its massive back pressure tapped to power cranes to unload ships. These were so much more efficient than the steam cranes they replaced that Armstrong began to explore other ways to build on his hydraulic business. While he also used his knowledge of pressure in pipes to create more efficient army and navy guns, Armstrong developed the

first hydraulic excavator in the 1880s, using it to excavate the docks at Hull. It was an ungainly steam-powered monster, but it chewed through dirt and rock, like nothing before. Ultimately the design was improved by the Kilgore company, who did away with Armstrong’s extra chains and gears, developing the ‘opposing piston’ hydraulic set up we see today. Kilgore may have beaten him to the punch there. Still, Armstrong’s hydraulic works reached their pinnacle in 1894, when the company he’d helped found deployed gigantic new hydraulic accumulators, steam-powered pumps and giant pistons to build London’s Tower Bridge, perhaps the city’s most famous landmark. Downsizing those accumulators, replacing water and other fluids with modern hydraulic fluids and switching diesel power for steam led to the miniaturisation and versatility of the excavator, which reached its modern form in the rebuild after the second

world war. It’s thought that the first mini excavator, of the kind used on construction sites worldwide, was the Japanese Yanmar YNB300. Space pressures and the need to work amid tight confines as Japan rebuilt its industrial base after the war led to the construction of a machine with a small footprint, a swing boom and the ability to be moved on the back of a small truck. Today, hydraulic excavators are everywhere, but it all began with one man standing waist-deep in a British river, wondering how to make a better water mill.
