“We have transmitters on five captive bred birds released last year, which have started venturing over the fence. It is really interesting as they previously had no experience with the wild.

Kākā have been frequenting Hawke’s Bay, with a population estimation of 85, following Cape Sanctuary’s repopulating native species back to the region. by Amy Fifita

“There are no kākā in our aviaries currently, they are all free, and our estimated population is around 85 birds. They are breeding on-site and breeding in natural tree cavities.

“The next stage is monitoring experienced adults in the population, as we are unsure where they migrate during winter. They disappear from around March until September, but the juveniles stick

“Inaround.thenext decade, we will see a population explosion, similar to what we have seen in Wellington from the Zealandia success of seven birds to 700 in a decade. Once the population is established, numbers should grow exponentially — we could see kākā everywhere in the region soon.

Cape Sanctuary general manager Rachel Ward checking a kākā nest

Rachel says she loves the endangered parrots because they are intelligent problem-solvers that are beautiful, rare and charismatic

“We can gauge the numbers by how many birds are in the population and by how many turn up at our supplementary meal stations. I love kākā. They are smart, good problem-solvers and a beautiful, rare and charismatic bird,” Cape Sanctuary general manager Rachel Ward says. “Kākā were functionally extinct here before our reintroduction programmes for many endangered species, mostly from years of predator control and habitat restoration. Cape Sanctuary has been trying to re-establish the wildlife on Cape Kidnappers for a long time. We are 16 years into our project, and the results areRachelincredible.”discourages the public from feeding the birds. It encourages them to be in areas prone to predators and creates a breeding site unsafe for females to nest. She asks anyone who sees them to get a zoomed-in photo of the kākā to ascertain whether they have bands on them. “It would be useful information for us. If people want them in their gardens, planting nectar-rich trees and providing clean bird baths in the warmer months are great ways to attract them.” Cape Sanctuary has reintroduced 19 species in Hawke’s Bay. The kākā programme started in 2012 when its soft aviary was built for captive breeding. It discovered that translocating the offspring from zoos and facilities worked well and added new genetics to the population.

Restoring avian nature

“We have been supplementing our population with captive-bred birds through the Captive Management Programme for North Island kākā. In the last two years, we have seen 15 juvenile birds through that.” Rachel says the sanctuary is revegetating areas and protecting the remaining forests. She encourages the region to get on board with the PredatorFree 2050 movement to create safe breeding for kākā.

“I enjoy having the children that have never been to a farm or seen the different animals we have here. The city children are fun to watch. It’s also interesting meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures.”

Paratu Cottage opened in 2019 as an extra income source and an outlet to keep Jo “Paratubusy. Cottage started in April 2019 after we refurbished it with a lick of paint, inside and out, new bathroom, spruced up the kitchen and polished the floors. It is my best memory, seeing it transformed into what it is today after a little bit of hardThework.”cottage was from the existing Waipukurau Hospital, which shut down in the late 1990s. The hospital, originally a tuberculosis sanitorium, had experienced changes and upgrades during its operation, including the extension of a maternity annexe with rooms for nurses.

“The cottage was an old nurse’s home for staff back in the day when Waipukurau had a maternity annex. I’m assuming it was moved onto the farm in the 60s or 70s for an extra cottage for the Peacock family that was here at the time.”

Jo and her husband, Richard refurbished the former nurse’s cottage as a way to create an extra income source cottage love to engage with. The cottage is very private.”

Jo and Richard Dee bought Paratu Farm near Waipukurau in 2016, renovating a 1930s cottage and running it as a farmstay for the past few years.

“We also lease another 700 hectares for sheep and beef, some next door and another farm along the Tukituki River, 25 minutes away. The three farms are run by my husband alongside one staff member. Our middle son, Mick, is a shareholder and lives in Melbourne, where he is based as a talented jockey.”

Jo says guests can choose to be involved in the farming side of things at the cottage or enjoy the privacy and beauty of being in the rural environment. It is a short drive to the beach and attractions like the Tukituki Trail. “The scenery is great from anywhere on the farm. Although we are not far from the sea, you can not quite see it, but there are some stunning views. “Guests can be as interactive as they wish or not at all. Chloe’s passion for farming began when she felt her connection with the whenua (land) on her uncle’s farm as a child.“When I was a young girl, I would go to my uncle’s farm north of Napier; he had a large lifestyle block of approximately 100 acres. I felt a huge connection to the whenua and didn’t want to leave. “I would see the rākau (trees) and the animals. I was hooked, farming chose me, and I needed to learn how to farm so I could stay on the land working.”

“It is absolutely amazing to be part of the competition. It has been more meaningful and makes me proud to be Māori for my iwi, hāpu and whānau. Entering this award brought me back to my roots and where I started. It had been 20 years since I had been home to the marae,” says Chloe. “It gave me a sense of belonging and was the right thing to do. It made me back myself and it is an amazing feeling when you can go back to your roots and feel connected to the land again. “It doesn’t matter if you’re back home or not. You always get that sense of belonging when you are on the land. You just do; it brings you back down to earth.”

Chloe Butcher-Herries, a born and bred wāhine toa from Hawke’s Bay, has been announced as an Ahuwhenua Young Farmers Award finalist.

“I had to work for it, and I was very fortunate to learn. I got my first shepherding job riding around on a two-wheeler, opening gates to being given my first dog and working it. Your dog is a huge part of your farming career. “I am grateful to be working the whenua, especially Newstead Farm. We have fenced-off waterways with no stock grazing amongst them. We are planting natives everywhere, and it is a great farm to be on. Chloe (right) and Makita Herries-Butcher have a passion to introduce aspiring farmers into the industry

Makita works in horticulture, so we are both in the primaryAnotherindustries.”passionfor Chloe, shared with Makita, is uplifting the community and helping others enter the primary industry.

“I know it takes a lot of time and resilience, but it is all worth it to see a smile on somebody else’s face, much like what happened to me.”

“We look after our land; we don’t overstock and give it rest over our dry summer period and let it grow back. Being Māori, we like to look after our whenua and not just work it.

“Looking after the land is a huge part of farming, and you will get better performing stock. I definitely want to get the message out there that if you look after your whenua, then it will look after you.”

“We have a passion for getting people into the primary industries. Makita works as the people and cultural adviser for Ngai Tukairangi Trust employing people to have a start in horticulture and supporting those within the industry.

MAD ABOUT

“We recently moved to Mangarara Station from Hastings. It is an awesome regenerative farm with mob grazing and native tree planting out at Patangata. We are going to step into our organic and permaculture stuff here and do workshops. It is exciting,” Kimi says. Kimi studied horticulture in Australia and permaculture in Bali. She joined a local permaculture garden group in the Sunshine Coast who had a guest speaker each week. One of them was a mycologist, who Kimi says was phenomenal. “The spores landed then and tickled away in my mind for years until we came to New Zealand. My mind was blown by how fungi can help us in every area of our lives, from health and wellbeing to cleaning up spills, water filtration, mindset and depression. ” Kimi and Zane sell their produce at the local farmers’ market, and Kimi says the feedback from people has been positive.

Zane Oosthuizen and Kimi Knott have a passion for fungi and what they can do medicinally and in a culinary capacity.

“When we were at the farmers’ market, we set up a demo bag to show people how they grow, and the interest we got from that was amazing,” Kimi says. “We are seeing that people want to do this themselves. It is a great opportunity to grow in people’s homes and connect them with their food and healthy eating. MUSHROOMS

“I want to encourage people to look at mushrooms in a new light and do some research. With health issues, I’m sure there is a mushroom that can help.”

“I started a market garden as an experiment. I have an interest in farming, as did my dad, and my mother was an avid gardener — I spent a lot of time with her in the garden,” Zane says. “I wanted to figure out if I could grow vegetables and if I enjoyed it. The outcome was that I loved spending time in the garden and I really liked that work.” Zane and Kimi are establishing a market garden at their new location and want to expand it into a permaculture farm with mushrooms incorporated into the“Weplans.want to make a log cultivation area on the block too and have lots of different types of fungi growing, plant trees, create a dam and start from the beginning,” Zane“Growingsays. the vegetable operation is something I am passionate about. Here’s a case in point; 200 years ago, a clever bloke named Bernoulli was looking at the mathematics of an equally clever bloke called Pascal, when he had a great idea. Pascal, who worked out the rules of pressure, made some points that Bernoulli was able to turn into a system for pumping water out of mines under pressure. A little later, a third man, Joseph Bramah, invented the hydraulic press based on the same sums. What does this have to do with a hard-working local crew of engineers in Hawke’s Bay? Well, just like the aforementioned blokes from long ago, the KRS 2003 crew is adept at nding solutions. Additionally, they are the local experts when it comes to Pascal, Bernoulli and Bramah’s ‘baby’; the science of heavy-duty hydraulics.

The team at KRS 2003 know hydraulics and backs up its specialisation with a solid foundation of engineering skills Silver and gold bracelets, rings, gemstone set pendants and more, designed and created in the heart of Hastings, Hawke’s Bay.

While hydraulic power and its many applications are a speciality of KRS 2003, and its mobile van is out there on the highway in all weathers servicing the agricultural, commercial and industrial sectors 24/7, there’s a lot more happening at their Hastings site, too. They hold a unique place in the engineering community offering everything from repairs, maintenance and manufacture and a few more things in between. The workshop is set up with mills, lathes, ram bed press and welding equipment that provides the team with innovative solutions to all kinds of challenges. If you need help with an engineering issue, they have the tools and the talent to make it right. In fact, they invite the Hawke’s Bay public to put them to the test.

“We have a great base of knowledge, made up of the people within our company and those involved in a support role, whether those are expert individuals or whole other companies. We are well established in the eld of hydraulic equipment, and we specialise in made-to-order hydraulic rams.”

There has been signi cant research into compounds found in joint supplements, especially glucosamine, chondroitin and turmeric. It comes as no surprise that studies come to differing conclusions ranging from poor to excellent results. While studies and research can be helpful, my criteria for assessing osteoarthritis supplements is simple. I evaluate the effectiveness of my supplements (and others) by whether they help. An important part of my discipline of nutritional medicine is regularly reviewing progress. When someone commences my joint supplements, I contact them after six weeks, then again at three months to see how they are doing. The measure of assessment is again simple; is it working? When someone purchases my joint products, I offer a joint health assessment, which the majority adopts. I ask questions about the problem, including its diagnosis and treatment, plus symptoms and a description of limitations in mobility. At the sixweekly review, we then compare progress to the initial assessment and modify the programme as needed. One thing I can say for certain, if people do not get a tangible bene t, they will stop taking them. Results are my sole measure of whether a supplement is helping. Spring is just around the corner, and with supply chain issues and New Zealand’s mercurial weather combined, planning a roofing mission well in advance is a must. by Andy Bryenton Those who scale the scaffolds and repair holey house-tops say that patience is the keyword for 2022, as they have a lot to do when the sun shines. Getting on the books now means you can make plans to do it all in one swoop, however, and there’s a possibility that a well-planned roofing quest can save you money. Here are the top five things to do when the covers come off up top. Insulation top up — When there’s no crawlspace to navigate, and the roof is peeled aside, it’s a good time to make short and easy work of insulation top-ups. Some materials sag, degrade and crumble over time, and it’s easy to spot areas where coverage isn’t one hundred per cent when there’s plenty of room and light.

Ventilation and extraction tech — Installing bathroom and kitchen extractors and home ventilation units, heat transfer tubing and other ducted vents can be a real game of Twister when the roof is on tight. Small crawlspaces make it a stuffy and difficult job for installation techs. However, with a few roof panels off, it’s easy to run ducts and place fan units. Sort all these out during roofing time, and you might save a bundle on the installation time and cost. Chimney clean sweep — Upgrading a fireplace often means putting in a new chimney stack, which must pass through the roof. Usually, your plumber and roofer are the same person, so getting both of these jobs done in one can be a bonus for both of you. An honourable mention goes to another rooftop plumbing-related fix, which is easier with scaffolds raised — your long-serving spouting and guttering. Add sunlight with skylights — The clever money these days is on using the sun instead of electricity, and the simplest way to do this is to let the sun into darker spaces in the home via tubular skylights. These have come a long way since the turn of the century and can brighten up dingy corners by harvesting the light without adding heat in the summertime.

Roof off, scaffolds up — why not tackle several tasks at once, while access is easy? Free volts from the sun — The final thing to consider up on your roof is a proposition that’s been tantalising many of us for the past few years. Solar hot water heaters and solar photovoltaic systems keep getting less expensive and more efficient. They are now past the point where the investment will be recouped easily over a short period of time, especially here in the sunny north. If the scaffolds are up, how about using the opportunity for a quick install, slashing those power bills down to size? No matter what you have planned for your roof, it should be possible to bring all these tasks together if you plan well in advance. That means picking up the phone today for a more breezy renovation tomorrow.

The system works by precisely synchronising the engine speed with crop flow and power output needs to ensure by Andy Bryenton consistent crop throughput at lower RPMs. That means less fuel used for a more efficient result, just what farmers need at a time of high fuel costs. Added to this is a new spout design, which John Deere says will become standard across the entire 9000 series for the new model year. With a longer, optimised contour, the new spout offers more visibility and easier maintenance, making it easier to service.

It’s another example of John Deere’s research and development team listening to farmers in the field who suggest ways to tweak and fettle a successful formula. Fifty years on from the inception of Deere’s big selfpropelled harvester, this also means full and seamless integration with digital technology, helping deliver pertinent data for more precise land management and harvesting.

John Deere will launch the 9500 SPFH in Australia this month, premiering what may well become its flagship self-propelled harvesting machine for New Zealand as well. Half a century of innovation has been packed under the distinctive and traditionally green hood, with a major leap forward in engine efficiency, coming at just the right time to beat the global cost crunch. The company is calling the new 9500 SPFH forage harvester a fitting milestone celebrating John Deere’s half-century commitment to supporting the nation’s agriculture“Farmerssector.and contractors demand durable high-capacity forage harvesters that consistently deliver maximum throughput to make the most of peak harvest windows,” said John Deere Australia and New Zealand production system manager Stephanie Gersekowski.

“The new 9500 is one of three models offering increased power and throughput in 2023, delivered through John Deere’s new JD18X engine, which reduces revolutions per minute while decreasing fuel and oil usage to drive further efficiency gains during operation.” That slow and low RPM figure is the key to better fuel economy, but there’s another trick up the sleeve of this consummate harvesting machine. To further optimise engine performance and synchronise it with throughput of crops, John Deere’s developers have added what they call HarvestMorion Plus to the new 9000 series line-up, which includes the 9500 and the even bigger 9600 and 9700 units.

A statue of Xilonen, Aztec maize goddess — maize was developed over 9,000 years from wild grass in what is now Mexico, leading to both sweetcorn and the vital cattle feed of the modern era of cultivars across North America, all stemming from modern-day Mexico. The changes made to maize to make it fit for agricultural feed purposes pale in comparison to the huge changes achieved during centuries by indigenous peoples to turn a marginally productive forage grass from the dry southwest into a staple foodstuff. Maize silage took off as a supplement in New Zealand from the 1990s onward, swiftly achieving harvests of more than 200,000 tonnes per annum. By 2010, maize covered more than 100,000 hectares each season, and that figure has only grown into the present day. As powerful harvesters cut a swathe through the maize fields this growing season, it’s interesting to reflect that, 9,000 years ago, this valuable resource began with a nomadic Central American tribesperson taking note of an unusually ripe-seeded sprig of grass.

Maize as a feed for cattle has become a pillar of the rural sector, delivering reliable feed with a superior energy content when it’s needed. Advancements in maize genetics through careful, scientific breeding have developed cultivars which grow vigorously in Kiwi conditions, producing feed with a consistently highenergy content. Research also suggests that maize or wheat grain can deliver more valuable milk solids proteins a litre. The amazing thing about all of this is not that maize can deliver the goods as an agricultural feed or even that modern agricultural scientists can make leaps of progress through understanding the genetics of maize. What’s most astounding is that the majority of the work required to turn the ancient, hard-kernelled wild grass called teosinte into maize was done long ago, before European peoples even invented the plough. One of the clues, which trace this 9,000-year history of selective planting and cross-breeding of strains, comes from a corn cob thrown away in a cave in Tehuacan, Mexico, at about the time the pyramids were being built.

Farming without maize seems as strange a concept as farming without cattle today, but the history of this staple feed goes back further than many people realise.

“What we did not know, using modern DNA or information, otherisreallyhowthisprocessgetsgoingandthetimingofdifferenteventsinthepast.”

“Based on archaeological evidence and modern DNA evidence, we already know that maize was domesticated in Mexico some time between about 10,000 and 6,000 years ago,” says Nathan Wales of the Natural History Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen.“Whatwedid not know, using modern DNA or other information, is really how this process gets going and the timing of different events in the past.”

The little corn cob is only a couple of centimetres long and carries just eight rows of kernels. Someone harvested and ate this plant 5,300 years ago. However, even then, it was closer to modern maize, of the kind we have developed in recent times into both cattle feed and commercial sweetcorn, than it was to its wildByancestors.thispoint, more than 3,500 years of selective planting had already made the Tehuacan specimen develop unshelled, soft kernels and had increased the size and number on each cob. This process was to continue right up until the ‘discovery’ of maize by Europeans; an event still commemorated in the United States during Thanksgiving. Those pilgrim settlers owed their survival to the strain of maize cultivated by the Wampanoag nation. Still, it was one of hundreds by Andy Bryenton

The first hydrogen-powered trucks have landed on Kiwi shores, in the form of Hyundai’s XCIENT range, already in operation with NZ Post. Heavy haulage is a big part of rural contracting, from lime and fertiliser to gravel and big agricultural machinery. Hydrogen power will undoubtedly be a game-changer, reducing emissions and fuel bills in years to come.

Tractors and trucks fuelled up with hydrogen by Andy Bryenton Hydrogen fuel is now being created in New Zealand, breaking the need to import it for heavy transport applications. A facility near Mōkai in the Taupō region is now online and manufactured for the privateKnownmarket.as Halcyon, the hydrogen venture is a joint one, split half and half between the Tūaropaki Trust and the Obayashi Corporation of Japan. It was opened in December last year and is now turning renewable electricity into transport-fuel grade hydrogen. Meanwhile, the option to fuel up with the most abundant element in the universe is on track in rural New Zealand, too. Waitomo Fuels has plans to expand its hydrogen network, racing ahead of other foreign-owned competitors and breaking ground on a hydrogen fuelling station last May.

from local filling stations? This scenario is no longer the stuff of science fiction.

“Seeing this vision come to life is particularly poignant for me as the thirdgeneration owner of Waitomo, given Waitomo celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. What a way to cement in the transition to a low-emissions fuel future for the fourth generation,” said Waitomo Group managing director Jimmy Ormsby at the opening of the Palmerston NorthThissite.expansion of the supply and production network for hydrogen is important for rural contractors because hydrogen is being touted as the replacement for diesel, just as electricity Hyundai’s XCIENT truck debut, Waitomo’s move to establish hydrogen stations, and Halcyon’s hydrogen production plant point the way to a diesel-free future in rural New Zealand is put forward as the future fuel for passenger cars. Hydrogen tractors have already been built overseas, with New Holland leading the charge. Hydrogen buses are already on Auckland routes. When production is ramped up, the fuel will provide a zero-emission alternative to diesel, not just in the ploughed field but on the road between jobs.

Farmers will already know that warm, happy calves have better colostrum uptake and put on condition faster. Shelter technology now provides a variety of options, from durable portable shelters to custom-made barns with soft rubberised flooring. In all cases, however, whether the surface underneath is dirt, bark chip, artificial or natural, what is being replicated is the shelter of those old-growth deciduous forests where the aurochs used to roam.

Shelter calves

A similar thing happened in northern Europe, where the aurochs sub-breed was even bigger. These were not today’s cattle, which any farmer can tell you are not always docile and tractable. They were bigger, meaner, and taller, with large horns. A bull aurochs was built to take on the apex predators of ancient Europe, like the wolf and the bear. Brave indeed were those early humans who domesticated them. However, the important factor in our current story is this; the aurochs was not a beast of the open plains. That role was taken by the steppe bison. Instead, the aurochs lived in the forests which spanned the continent. It meant that calving season saw them retreat into the shelter of the trees, allowing for easy defence against predators and respite from the Fast-forwardelements.and the aurochs are long gone, replaced with several breeds by Andy Bryenton of cattle shaped by the human need for more meat, more milk, and less homicidal rage. What remains is a necessity for good shelter for calves and calving cattle, harking back to thousands of years of evolution. Researchers have found (and farmers with on-the-ground experience can confirm) that cattle have a fairly narrow ‘thermo-neutral’ band, the temperature where they are happiest.

Cattle are hardy and stoical creatures, seemingly built to weather nature’s However, there’s a reason why shelter becomes a priority at time.

Ten thousand years ago, in the north of what is now India, one of the most important domestication events of the post-ice-age era happened. The aurochs, ancestor of all beef and dairy cattle, was domesticated after what scientists believe was a long period of co-existence next to nomadic human populations.

“Conditions outside the thermoneutral zone of certain cattle types, possibly leading to cold or heat stress and Attempts are being made to bring back the aurochs, the ancestor of modern cattle — these forest-loving beasts are a reason calves need shelter today impairment of production if persistent, occasionally occur even in temperate climates,” says a research team led by Eva Van Laer in Belgium. “Such thermal stress is likely to become more common in the future, due to global warming and cattle’s decreased capacity for thermoregulation caused by selection for high productivity.”

Just like such a natural environment, the shelter checklist contains the following: good ventilation, protection from harsh winter weather such as cold winds and driving rain, the ability of a calf to sit, lie and stand naturally without constriction, and cleanliness, including methods to keep out pests and birds whose droppings may carry bacteria and illness. Shelter options can be tailored to your own farm, your own circumstances and your future intent with regard to herd size and replacement management. You’ll sleep better at night, knowing home-grown feed is much cheaper than truckloads of supplements. Irresistible eating Cows love 501 Chicory — it’s tasty and easy to eat and good for them, too. Energy-rich, full of protein and packed with macro and micronutrients, it can be digested quickly, so they spend more time ruminating.Plus,it’s safe to graze when facial eczema makes grass high risk, and you don’t have to worry about bloat. Graze early — earn more 501 Chicory is an annual, so it jumps out of the ground faster than perennial cultivars, and is ready to graze sooner. That gives up to one more full grazing than other chicories or as much as 550kg extra dry matter per ha.

That big tap root doesn’t just help 501 Chicory keep growing in dry weather — it also mines the soil for excess minerals like nitrogen and potassium. Sow it on your ef uent blocks, and after grazing, your cows will happily help redistribute those essential nutrients more evenly back around the rest of the farm. Leach less We hear a lot about plantain’s potential to mitigate nitrogen loss, but science has shown us chicory can be equally helpful.

In research trials, cows grazing chicory excreted signi cantly less nitrogen every time they urinated, reducing the nitrogen load in the urine patch compared to ryegrass clover pasture.
