AWARENESS

The Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s distinctive recreational water team will be monitoring water quality at the region’s popular beaches and river swim spots over summer

Swim Thru Summer is also a reminder to check your favourite spots are ‘good to go’ before taking the plunge at our superb beaches and rivers, says the regional council’s marine and coastal scientist, Anna Madarasz-Smith. “The water quality at Hawke’s Bay beaches is excellent most of the time, and while our rivers and streams can be affected by run-off after heavy rain, they are typically OK to swim in over summer when the flow is steady.” Running until the end of January, Swim Thru Summer promotes an online traffic light for water quality at beach and river swim spots. The message will be spread through print, radio, social media, busbacks, vehicles and swim spot visits. Anyone in Hawke’s Bay, or New Zealand, can use their smartphone to check the traffic light for their favourite swimming spot by going to hbrc.govt.nz. The science monitoring team, which includes university students working through their holidays, goes out every

Monday to monitor more than 30 popular recreational water spots across the region, from November until mid-March. “There is a misconception that Hawke’s Bay rivers and beaches are not suitable for swimming, but monitoring data shows that many of our rivers and beaches are suitable for swimming much of the time,” says Mrs Madarasz-Smith. “We are working closely with the national team at LAWA to provide results for their Can I Swim Here tool at LAWA. org.nz/swim. It gives a great picture of the weather, water temperature, facilities and directions to each swim spot.” The summer monitoring results for all regions are shared on the national LAWA website, which stands for Land Air Water Aotearoa and aims to be New Zealand’s most comprehensive source of natural resource data. The website displays the current state and trend information for New Zealand’s rivers and lakes, water use and availability, bathing beaches, air quality and land cover.

The devastating Port Hills fire showed how much indiscriminate and widespread damage a rural fire can inflict. Fighting these fires is dangerous and expensive. Predictions of drier summers point to a growing hazard. The risk is greatly reduced though, if you check out the local rules for lighting a fire – ‘Before you light, check it’s alright’. At different places, at different times, there will be complete fire bans. Or, you might be able to light a fire with a permit. Or, there might be no permit necessary. You need a clear area for the fire. Make sure you can, and do, put it out before you leave. So, ‘Before you light, check it’s alright’.

Gold Award recipients at the Dairy Compliance Awards 2018

“It is always a privilege to be at these awards and seeing the numbers grow. More than half our dairy farmers have been fully compliant for at least three years, and thirty-four for five years. It is a great result as it takes a lot of work to achieve, but these dairy guys get it and are working hard to be good Hawke’s Bay citizens,” said Hawke’s Bay Regional Councillor Fenton Wilson. The award scheme developed from a goal set by the Dairy Industry Liaison Group when it was established by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council in 2008. Thirty-four farms have maintained full compliance for at least five consecutive years to achieve or maintain a gold award status. To achieve 100 per cent

compliance, farms must achieve full compliance with their consents at all inspections, including paperwork. Water take consents are included as well as the farm dairy effluent discharge consent. Any farm not achieving compliance in any one year is reset to year zero. Thirteen farms with four years’ consecutive compliance are at the silver tier, and seven farms with three years’ compliance are at bronze tier. The awards are supported by sponsors Fonterra, Farmlands and Ravensdown. “It’s great to see an increasing number of our Hawke’s Bay dairy farmers achieving five years plus of full compliance. The New Zealand dairy

industry is cooperative by nature, and it is this ethos of working together from the farms, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and Fonterra teams that all contribute to this result. Well done to all involved,” says Fonterra Hawke’s Bay regional manager, Tony Haslett. Hendrik Venter from Ravensdown says farmers and fertiliser companies are under the spotlight regarding environmental responsibilities and Ravensdown is serious about this responsibility. “Our certified advisers are ensuring the right nutrients are applied at the right rate and at the right time. Congratulations to these people managing their farms in an environmentally responsible way.”

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

The impressive

Charolais by Ann van Engelen

Rauriki Charolais stud owners Simon and Wendy Collin are firm believers in the breed’s structural soundness, even temperament, fertility and ease of calving as a farming choice.

“W

e initially started breeding Italian Romagnola cattle in the 1990s, but it wasn’t profitable because people were looking for exotic breeds such as Simmentals or Charolais. From researching, we believed Charolais had the best potential. We were in Rock Hampton, Australia in early 2000 and discovered ‘red factor’ Charolais and purchased some but recently changed our objective to incorporate the traditional white colour,” says Simon. “Originally a few other breeders retired and we were able to purchase their stock. After 18 years we are up to 120 cows and are able to be selective

and offer more bulls for sale. Now our herd is three-quarters traditional white or cream and a few red. “Our son George returned from living overseas and works with us. I grew up in town, and my mother grew up farming in Crownthorpe, and I was fortunate to have a bachelor uncle. He was a very traditional farmer, and I worked for him with Angus cattle, and he enabled me to get a start with land.” The property is 660 hectares freehold with 34 hectares of pine trees and the family lease another 200-hectare split block. “We mostly grass feed but grow winter and summer crops. We are 300-

750 metres above sea level and get a long winter season. We don’t have flat paddocks so there is 60 to 70 per cent that we couldn’t crop.” The family sell up to 20 bulls a year, starting as yearlings. They look

for the softness of carcass, growth and muscling and breed moderate, sound, functional bulls and aim for exceptional temperament. “They are the same as any breed, traditional or exotic, they all have

issues. We like cattle that are easily handled, and they need to have an even temperament to pass on to their progeny. There is always work to do, just when you think something is sorted, something from four generations back can show up. “We do sell into the dairy industry and last May we had our first bull sale and sold 15 from 17 animals. We have low birth weight, low capacity bulls that are mostly used over Holstein Friesian cows.” The family also have a commercial heifer operation and currently run 40 weaners. “We are increasing to 80 that will be taken through and killed before the second winter. Stud farming is a bit different, and we try to remain as commercially orientated as possible, but run a traditional unit and have a bush block that we winter graze on and a bee operation out of there too. “We believe Charolais add variety and diversity for dairy. They give you a natural growth mode when put over traditional cattle with hybrid vigour. They generally perform better especially when being paid on a cents per kilo basis you get a greater return. We also farm 3,200 breeding Romney ewes plus replacements and use black face rams and are moving into Suftex rams. We split our flock into two mobs — sheep accessor Guy Martin does this for us. The ‘A’ are our best ewes and are more commercially and economically viable, and they go back to the Romney ram. The ‘B’ ewes go to the blackface or terminal rams. That is how we work a

terminal and maternal mob. We buy up to 1,000 store lambs for winter trading to compliment our heifer finishing system. “The steeper country is more suitable for sheep — you wouldn’t want to put breeding cattle there. We are not organic, and with drench resistance becoming an issue the cattle groom the pasture for the sheep. I believe this process by cows is very underrated but more people are starting to move back to this — cattle groom grass to a level that increases your sheep operational profitability, and you can’t buy that.” Simon believes the market potential is yet to be fully realised. “We believe Charolais are the best exotic breed at the moment and

commercial farmers are recognising that crossing them with traditional breeds is positive. It has been proven that Charolais have been underrated simply because other beef have been promoted. The quality of beef produced from a Charolais/Angus is very good. Mike and Sharon Barton at Taupo Beef are very successful. “We purchased our first females from Pouriwai Stud in Gisborne. Twelve ‘R2 heifers’ that were in-calf to Pouriwai S335 and imported French bull, Laurel. We have since purchased stock from other studs throughout the country and have come a long way from our first purchase and are ever grateful to the people who have helped us get to where we are today.”

Committed to forestry by Ann van Engelen The Horne family have been in the logging business since 1964 and are passionate about their commitment to excellence in industry training as they encourage workers into forestry as a career.

“E

veryone who works for us has to be certified for all the jobs they do, this is the non-negotiable bottom line for our company,” says operations manager, Amanda Horne. Amanda comes from a nursing background and now runs the family business alongside her husband, Bernard. “Bernard is the third generation of his family to run the business, and we look set to continue into the future, with our 21-year-old son Matt already a key member of the team, and our daughter Louise helps me part-time. Bernard and Matt have logging in the blood. Logging is all Matt has ever wanted to do — from spending time in the forest with his grandfather as

a toddler, he is now halfway through a two-year level six diploma in forest management at Toi Ohomai, formerly Waiariki Institute of Technology, Rotorua. “Matt has been working in the forest since leaving school and plans to gradually move into a management role at Horne Logging. “He is already bringing new management skills into the business,” says Bernard. “We are both totally comfortable in the heart of a harvesting landscape. My biggest satisfaction comes from getting the job done and making sure the crews are happy and safe. We operate two logging crews with approximately 17 staff.” The company’s commitment to training has led to multiple awards, including

being named ‘Training Contractor of the Year’ for the Southern North Island in 2017 and 2018. “One of our team members Dan Kyle was also awarded Trainee of the Year in 2018, and we recently achieved ‘certified contractor’ status. This confirms high standards of environmental management and health and safety in all of our operations,” says Amanda. “I call our crew members ‘the lads’, and they are really an extension of our family. We do have the good ones and the naughty ones of course, but we aim to be as supportive as possible to all our staff.” This attitude runs to early finishes on every second Friday so staff can return to town to tend to any personal matters they may have. The company also provide a staff lunch and health and safety meeting at least once a month at their base in Masterton. “Our philosophy is basically to treat people the way we would like to be treated ourselves,” says Amanda. “One of my underlying values is that having an education leads to more choices. We want to encourage people to grow in their jobs. All of our guys are trained to be multiskilled and can take on a number of jobs in the forest, but we also encourage them to refresh their training and upskill.” Training is ongoing, and programmes are organised with the help of Russell Riley, the regional Competenz forestry manager, and NZQA assessor John Reid.

The family have two logging crews and are committed to ensuring that their staff are well trained for the job

“Dan Kyle has now also qualified as an assessor, so comes in very useful as part of our training team. In addition, we now employ one of our crew members Justin Carswell in a full-time health and safety role,” says Amanda. “It does annoy me that forestry workers lack recognition for their high skill levels. “People can be quite dismissive of forestry as a career, but there are lots of opportunities and all of them involve different skills.” Amanda says that all the effort put into staff management and training doesn’t mean that Horne Logging is immune from the challenges of finding and retaining good staff. “It is one of our biggest day-today headaches, staff shortages are

widespread throughout the forest industry,” says Bernard. We would really love to see more women in the industry, including out in the forest, there are plenty of jobs women can do. They see things with a different set of eyes and having even one woman in a crew could make a huge difference to crew culture. We think the industry needs a bit of a shake-up, and to become more flexible in its approach to employing women.” The family have a long list of the blocks to be logged over the next few years in the eastern Wairarapa. “There will be no shortage of work for Horne Logging, and as a family our goal is to continue our commitment to training excellence wherever we are working.”

During the season from September to December we contract some 200 pickers and employ 100 staff in the packhouse. “Seventy per cent goes to the local market with the balance exported to Japan or the USA.”

We were going to have a combined orchard but decided on boysenberries and asparagus — but the harvesting times clashed, so we dropped the berries and concentrated on asparagus,” says Alex Boyd. “Asparagus comes from the Greek word meaning sprout or shoot and is a perennial member of the lily family, which includes onions, leeks, and garlic. The cultivation began more than 2,000 years ago in the Eastern Mediterranean area.” In 1997, along with 29 other

Asparagus is grown by seed in a nursery for the first year, and then the crowns are lifted and then planted in the fields. “You let it grow for the first two years so the plant can set itself up for a good production capacity and the next two years you harvest it lightly. Being a perennial, each plant grows for up to 15 years, and in full production, we get six to seven tonnes per hectare each season.” When the spear reaches 23cm in length, with a tight head and good green colour, it is harvested, and more spears appear. “These are washed, trimmed, graded and packed within hours of harvesting and transferred to the chillers immediately to guarantee a superior flavour and freshness. Each plant keeps putting up spears for 90–100 days and is harvested by hand. Near the end of October when the spring weather warms the ground temperature, a spear can grow 20cms in 24 hours hence you have to pick daily. “There are not many growers around anymore. Over the past few years, our main export to Japan has been taken over by Australia due to the cost of freight and production costs. Here you have to invest around $12–14k per hectare to establish a crop, which then takes time to get into commercial production growth. We manage blocks for other people, and this helps with employment for staff. We believe in helping others advance in the industry and provide the knowledge of our experience. establishment and maintenance of the beds, weed and pest control and with arranging and managing pickers during the harvest period. “Asparagus is one of the most friendly crops to grow. We don’t use insecticides, but we do use a pre-emergence spray to stop the weeds growing. Birds don’t worry it — but rabbits and possums can be a problem, however they can be controlled quite quickly. “Our son Ashley is involved in the business, and we are committed to food safety, and all of our suppliers hold either NZGap or Eurepgap Certification. Boyds Asparagus is currently accredited to the Woolworths Quality Assurance, BRC and NZGap food safety programmes. “Asparagus is very good for you, it is

high in protein, low in carbs and calories and is high in potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus and iron. We recommend everyone buy a little often because fresh is best. “Remember the key in keeping the quality good is chilling the product as soon as it is picked, buying a little amount often. Keep them in the fridge when storing at home and eat it as quickly as possible.” To cook asparagus Alex says trim the spears to the desired length, bring a pot of salted water to a rapid boil and add the asparagus. When the water reboils take the vegetable out and put on a plate with butter, salt and pepper. “It is delicious, and I enjoy it on a thin slice of fresh white bread and butter.”

Getting a super bounce Supertramps Trampolines have been around for 40 odd years and are one of the only 100% New Zealand made trampolines left in the country, with a reputation for being the longest lasting tramp on the market. A New Zealand-owned and operated manufacturing company specialising in outdoor weather protection products, Canvasland took license of the Supertramps brand around 1990 and purchased Outdoor Living, which designed and manufactured the Superoctopus octagonal model at the time. The two companies were amalgamated, and Supertramps Trampolines was born. The manufacture of both the rectangle and octagonal models has remained in Levin ever since. It is integral to the brand to keep all manufacturing in New Zealand, supporting local businesses and maintaining quality control at its best. The structural integrity of a Supertramp Trampoline has always been at the forefront. They are a family trampoline, and the frames are built to recognise that. We use a 65 x 35 x 3.0 galvanised box section steel, which is manufactured to the highest level of Australian/ New Zealand standards, AS/NZS 1163:2016, leaving you with total confidence in your trampoline frame. Keeping manufacturing local allows us

to offer additional options like custom powder coated frames, and custom coloured safety pads. “Thirteen Christmas Eves ago my husband and I put together our toddlers’ Supertramp. While they slept, we easily pieced it together. I think I was more excited than the kids. It was 25 years earlier that a Supertramp arrived in my childhood garden. I grew up on the trampoline, bouncing alone, with siblings, the whole neighbourhood. “Today we have three adolescents who have done the same. We are onto our second mat, but the frame is as solid as ever. I deliberately steered clear of a caged trampoline, and I’m glad. I think the spatial awareness my kids learned

at an early age, has been improved by the freedom of a Supertramp. Two of my three children have competed in trampolining, but we all enjoy a bounce especially when friends are over. Honestly, the safety pads are great and the games double when the sides are clear. I find myself buying another Supertramp this year: to go in the garden at the beach bach. I couldn’t recommend this brand enough. They’re durable; they’re quiet, they’re great for young and old.“ Michelle Richardson, Mt Maunganui — 6/11/2017. We bought a standard sized rectangular Supertramp second hand some 17+ years ago. When purchased the tramp had already seen a good few seasons, so its probably around 25 years old! The thing has been the best investment in play equipment that we’ve ever made! - Mark and Jane - Cambridge

Chondroitin: forgotten hero by John Arts

Riverside Farm in the Wairarapa. Landcorp is New Zealand’s largest agricultural enterprise. Its core business is pastoral farming, running 1.5 million stock units — sheep, deer, beef and dairy cattle — on 126 properties totalling 372,115 hectares under management.

Last edition we looked at a major research study (Wildi et al, 2011) that confirmed the benefits of high dose Chondroitin sulphate (CS) for joints affected by osteoarthritis. This week we dig a little further. I have no doubt that the correct dose of highgrade CS is the number one natural compound to help stabilise joints affected by osteoarthritis. As an example, I have been helping a man with osteoarthritis in both knees. The pain levels had become quite debilitating. We started with a booster dose of 1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin with the same amount of glucosamine and 400mg of high potency curcumin (from turmeric). After three months the pain level had significantly reduced and is now mobile again. More recent research from the British Medical Journal (May 2017) compared high-grade Chondroitin with common anti-inflammatory medication and found that 800mg of CS was beneficial. Researchers commented: “This compelling benefitrisk profile, in light of the known clinical risks associated with chronic usage of NSAIDS and paracetamol, underscores the potential importance

of pharmaceutical-grade [chondroitin sulfate] in the management of knee [osteoarthritis], especially in the older population requiring longterm treatment.” The question is how can it help? What does it do to arthritic joints? Researchers have found that CS has multiple benefits. Firstly it helps regulate inflammatory processes within the joint capsule. Secondly, and more importantly, it helps specialised cells that reside in cartilage called chondrocytes. CS improves the ability of chondrocytes to secrete and repair cartilage. It comes as no surprise as CS is an important component of cartilage. I have worked with so many people with osteoarthritis that I am genuinely surprised if we cannot get an improvement within three months. WATER MATTERS The heart of a water system

Be it for farm or lifestyle block trough supply or irrigation, swimming pool operation, or household supply from a rainwater tank or bore, mechanical and electric water pumps are an integral part of rural life. In the summer months, they often work overtime. The pump shed is the heart of any water supply system, and the mechanism inside needs to be at the top of its game creating the right pressure and flow for the amount of water required for a given task. Periodic testing of pump performance and ensuring maintenance is key to operational performance. Developing a pump maintenance checklist will keep your pump functioning efficiently and trim down your everyday expenditure for upkeep and give some protection against a loss of water supply. First on the list is a frequent check to make sure that the speed of the water pump corresponds with the output in

horsepower. Also, examine the water system for leakages, fissure or wear and tear. Regular maintenance can prevent damage and reduce costs of replacement parts. Less frequently, it might pay for a monthly examination to check and repair seals, oil bearings to manufacturers specifications, confirm that the water pump is secured firmly against over vibration and also check plugs and wiring on electrical systems. If you are a typical kiwi operator, it’s pretty certain you can perform daily and monthly maintenance personally. Once a year, it probably pays to call

w.harrispumps.co.nz

in a professional, if only for peace of mind, and even more important, to make sure you are covered by your insurance requirement. Technicians are trained in their field to fine-tune, restore or repair the bearings, drive belt or any other faulty part. In addition, a technician needs to carry out a vibration and temperature examination to make sure that the motor is running in peak condition. Steady maintenance to avoid preventable damage and costs is a no-

brainer. In addition, you can improve water pump performance in a number of ways such as adding a small booster pump, perhaps increasing household pressure from a rainwater tank, or cutting back bigger pumps that are not necessary and altering the speed of the pump so it is more proficient. Your own maintenance coupled with expert advice once a year should go a long way towards having trouble-free water supplies, be it for a household, a pool or something further afield.

Coping with shortages It is often taken for granted that fresh, clean water will always be available, but many rural people are caught out as water shortages become a reality during summer. Water is a vital part of everyday life, and people don’t always realise only a certain amount is in our tanks, rivers, streams and dams, especially those who have recently moved from urban areas. Sometimes demand is greater than supply with an average New Zealand family uses 250 to 300 litres of water for each person daily. In a typical household, the bathroom, kitchen and laundry use 25 per cent of the daily volume with the toilet using 30 per cent and the last 20 per cent used outdoors. It is also important to know that under the Animal Welfare Act it is the owner’s legal responsibility to ensure

any animals in their care have adequate water and find supplied. When watering your garden in the summer remember a hose running at full volume uses 2,000 litres of water an hour and water low to the ground and slow when it is cool and calm, not in the heat of the day or in windy weather when water will evaporate rather than soak in. Watering by hand or on an irrigation system controlled by a timer is best as moveable sprinklers are the least effective for saving water. Check your water tank levels and order extra water early from your water delivery person to ensure your daily life is not interrupted. Repair any leaking taps, tanks and pipes

early as a small drip uses more water than you think. Sixty drips a minute uses 21 litres a day — over a year that is some 7,644 litres wasted. Catching rainwater in suitable containers is a good way to provide water for the garden and chickens. Remember to keep your house gutters and roof clean to stop debris and rodent or bird waste entering

your tank and check if your tank needs cleaning annually and ensure regularly that possums and birds have not fallen in and decayed. Water matters most as it is needed for a healthy life for animals and humans alike. Taking care of it is one of the import aspects of ensuring your farm, lifestyle block and household run smoothly.

It is said that Gisborne has some of the best surf beaches in the country and surf lessons and guides are available to all ages and abilities with the aim to get you out on the waves and experience the perfect breaks. For wildlife lovers — take the opportunity to embark on a reef tour and feed the stingrays and get up close and personal with these majestic creatures in their natural environment, and explore the underwater beauty of Tatapouri Bay. Those keen on horse riding are able to take a personalised ride through beautiful countryside to enjoy spectacular views across the Pacific Ocean, and if cycling or hiking is your passion, there are several trails you can take across the district, from one day to three or more. Explore the stunning lakes, forests and mountains of Te Urewera National Park, the North Island’s largest national park as well as beautiful Lake Waikaremoana. Visiting one of the many wineries is a must if you would like to discover

why Gisborne is recognised as the ‘Chardonnay Capital of the World’. The millennium wall sits looking out over Midway Beach along the city’s foreshore. It was built for the Year 2000 celebrations and looks across the bay towards Young Nick’s Head and Kaiti Beach. Four panels of black granite tiles containing approximately 32,000 names were placed on the wall with each sixmetre long panel holding 80 tiles with 100 names on each — this is worth a visit. Adventure playground, the Botanic Gardens and Rere Reserve are all places the family can enjoy. Rere Falls Reserve provides lots of open space for picnicking, swimming and enjoying the surroundings of the picturesque Rere Falls. It is a popular destination over summer with the Rere Rockslide just two kilometres up the road. The water slide is 60m long and often ventured down on boogie boards, tyre tubes or air mattresses.

Let the children enjoy the nine playground areas that are on offer at Adventure playground and have a picnic under the trees and feed the ducks on the lake whilst the Botanical Gardens host an impressive framework of mature trees, meandering wide paths, and stunning garden collections including native bush, roses and flowerbeds. GISBORNE

A region rich in history Gisborne has the one thing nowhere else in the world has and that is it is the first place to see the sun each day. The area offers a diverse range of activities for locals and visitors including discovering that rich history the district has to offer. It is where the first Polynesian canoes landed, where Captain James Cook first came ashore from the Endeavour in October 1769 and where Maori and European first encountered each other. Forestry and horticulture are all a big part of the region’s success with 53 per cent of New Zealand’s sweet corn being grown in the area, and persimmons, feijoas, avocados, apples, grapes, kiwifruit and lemons already in the ground with more than 500 hectares of new plantings in progress. The industries provide thousands of employment opportunities every year. Tourism is alive and well, and Gisborne District Council operates registered summer campgrounds during daylight savings months, and they are open until Sunday, April 7 2019. No freedom camping is allowed at registered summer campgrounds, but there is restricted freedom camping at

Kaiaua Beach, Tolaga Bay, Tokomaru Bay and Doneraille outside of the summer camping period. Check the freedom camping bylaw for more details and contact the Gisborne District Council for summer camping permits. Whether you are local or a tourist, Gisborne has a lot to offer for all ages. Taking a Maori cultural tour to learn about the people of the East Coast is something everyone should do. Day trips include visiting Tikitiki Church — one of the most ornate Maori churches ever built and journeying to Tolaga Bay where you can walk to the end of the 660-metre pier. Gisborne city is easily explored on foot and has a variety of eateries and cafes as well as the Olympic pools that are located on Centennial Marine Drive opposite Midway Beach. The complex has seven separate pools including a dive pool with diving boards, a 98-metre hydro-slide, an outdoor toddlers pool with slide and a therapy pool and there are barbecue facilities to enable visitors to have that extra-special social time.

Gisborne Rewinds is proud to be the distributor of the Lorentz range of solar pumps. Lorentz Solar powered helical rotor pumps deliver water economically, cleanly and reliably, ANYWHERE.

BENEFITS: ∙ Long life expectancy and proven in service record ∙ Designed for use in remote and harsh conditions ∙ Smart modular design for simple and cost effective servicing and repair ∙ Water filled motors for reliability and to avoid oil contamination ∙ Fast and simple installation ∙ Cost effective spare parts philosophy ∙ Very strong ROI against diesel powered pumping ∙ Large range of pumps to closely match each application and optimise efficiency.

Woolshed solution a Clean Sweep Mark and Megan Turton decided there has to be a better way to clean the manure build-up from under woolsheds to help farmers have a healthier environment, so the couple set about inventing a solution.

Think think think. Think about what you’re carrying. Think about where you’re going.

Mark was giving a friend a hand one day to clean the manure out from under his woolshed using a big sucker machine, the day was terrible and wet, and it didn’t work — you spent all your time unblocking it. Mark thought there must be something easier and quicker to use for the job, but there wasn’t. He asked himself a few questions and came up with a hydraulic driven rotary hoe system that can grind off the hardest of deposits. It is driven in up the pile line where it digs and once full is hauled out. Every time we trialled it we saw 10 things wrong but one thing that worked so we kept pushing ahead.
