EXCELLENCE IN DERMATOLOGY

He will travel the country hosting the regional finals early next year before presenting the grand final in July. Te Radar says he is honoured to be the new face of the prestigious event. “It is one of New Zealand’s truly iconic events, with some great hosts over the years that have left a strong legacy.” The east coast finals will take place in Waipukurau on April 1 2017. This contest will see competitors Hamish Best, Hugh Abbiss and Ben Thomas of Hawke’s Bay, Richard Cameron and Henry Reynolds of Wairarapa, and Patrick Crawshaw, Daniel Tarbotton and Liam Kelly of Tararua pit themselves against one another. Te Radar is originally from an Ohinewai dairy farm in the Waikato and says he feels right at home narrating the contest having grown up watching the fierce competition on television and having a brother who was once a Young Farmer member. “I have these childhood memories of watching it on telly, thinking I could answer the quiz questions but never

getting them right. I never thought that one day I would be the one asking those questions.” Having watched some regional finals last year and compèring the final evening show at the grand final, Te Radar has gleaned an understanding of what it takes to win the FMG Young Farmer of the Year. Contest chairman Dean Rabbidge said he was delighted to welcome Te Radar as the new face of the contest, and said his skills would add another dimension in the 49th year of the competition. “And with the landmark 50th contest coming up, we couldn’t think of anybody more fitting to represent the refreshed format we’ve recently introduced. Te Radar is a beloved character in New Zealand and we couldn’t be happier to see him take on this role.” NZ Young Farmers CEO Terry Copeland was also thrilled to secure Te Radar and took the opportunity to thank previous hosts Mark Leishman and Craig Wiggins for their long service to the contest.

Potato industry strengthens Potatoes New Zealand Incorporated have signed an agreement with Government to better protect the potato industry it represents in managing biosecurity. The industry group have become the 14th partner organisation to join the Government Industry Agreement for Biosecurity Readiness and Response. The Deed was signed on Friday, December 9 by representatives from PNZ at a ceremony held on a potato farm. Attendees included PNZ and government representatives, Nathan Guy — Minister for Primary Industries and the GIA Secretariat. Stuart Wright, PNZ chair, said they gained widespread support for joining GIA after extensive consultation with members of the potato and wider agricultural industries. “MPI have really lifted their game in the biosecurity space, implementing a number of key initiatives to help with the early detection of pests and diseases. PNZ considers it is important to play our part as potato farmers to help prepare for, and minimise the potential impact from biosecurity pests and disease,” says Mr Wright. The value of the New Zealand potato industry is $814 million per annum. There are 169 registered potato growers in New Zealand, producing 479,000 metric tonnes of potatoes in 2015, from

10,700 hectares planted. Like all other horticulture industries, the potato industry faces a number of biosecurity threats that could damage the industry. One at the forefront of people’s minds at the moment is Tomato Potato Psyllid. “Biosecurity prevention and planning are essential to ensure the commercial wellbeing of the potato and wider horticulture industries. Potatoes are a much loved part of every New Zealander’s meals. Stuart Wright Potatoes New Zealand chair and “We need to protect minister Nathan Guy dig potatoes out of the ground potatoes from biosecurity pests and diseases to ensure future represents one of the larger vegetable generations to come will continue to crops and is a significant addition to the enjoy potatoes with their meals,” says partnership,” says Mr Rich. “The thirteen other partners Chris Claridge, chief executive, PNZ. MAKING A

SUSTAINABLE LIVING BY AYLA MILLER

Farming organically is more than just adding value to their product for Andy Tait-Jamieson and Sophie Siers — it is about creating an industry and way of life that their children and future generations can be proud of.

T

he couple farm cattle, lambs and pigs on 300ha of East Coast hill country in the Hawke’s Bay which they call Ti Kouka Farm and is the home of Ti Kouka Farm Organic Meat. Andy grew up on a dairy farm in the Waikato whilst Sophie was a city girl from Wellington. After a stint travelling in Europe together, the pair settled in the seaside town of Waimarama. Andy worked as a builder and Sophie as an early childhood teacher. They have three children Emile, Oliver and Lilka. Despite this initial move away from farming, Andy remained drawn to the

lifestyle, and when the opportunity came to return to farming they leapt at it. “We always had an interest in organics,” said Andy. “When I came to farm on my own account it was a shock to realise how reliant on chemical inputs farming had become over the years I had been away from it. “When I saw what had to be done to make a living out of rough hill country, and saw what was being fed to animals to make them produce to an economic level, I was horrified.” This left them two options. Either force the farm to produce with chemicals or

leave the production levels as they were and make more money off the products by certifying them organic. They decided to head down the organic path and within three or four years of taking over, they were fully certified. Eventually demand increased and they now have their own factory in Hastings and provide retail ready, packaged and certified organic beef, lamb and pork to retailers all over the country under the brand The Organic Farm Butchery Ltd. As well as all this Sophie found time to write a children’s book, Allis the Little Tractor, which has just won best first book at the New Zealand Children’s Book Awards. She is enjoying bringing farming stories to the general populace. “More and more people live in cities. Kids don’t know where food comes from.

Farming is more than just a way to make a living for Andy — it is about creating a sustainable industry

There is a whole generation of children in New Zealand who have no idea what goes on on a farm,” said Andy. “All they are hearing are political sound bites that farming is destroying our waterways, that farming is a dirty, damaging industry. “While to some extent this is true of conventional agriculture, they need to know that there is a whole different type of farming that is completely

sustainable and actually really good for your soil and your water. While New Zealand looks clean and green, we have some pretty dirty practices, so now we have to stop that and provide proof that we have stopped. “Then you have products that the world wants, values, and is happy to pay for. It’s sustainable, doesn’t pollute our waterways and doesn’t destroy our soils.”

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

he land was originally owned by Josiah Howard and was donated to the Crown upon his death in 1919 on the condition that it was to be used to provide agricultural training. The first training course opened in 1931 and since then more than 600 young farmers have successfully completed their cadetship with Smedley.

Now the 5,040 hectare sheep, beef and deer station offers up and coming young farmers a two-year cadetship which aims to give them all the skills they need for a successful career in the farming industry. Rob Evans and his wife Jen live on-site and are the current managers. They have been there for two years and Rob is an ex cadet

himself. He says no matter where you look in the agricultural industry you will find ex Smedley cadets somewhere. “Some have gone onto run landcorp farms and the head of FMG is ex Smedley. There are some that go into Agribusiness or go on to run their home farms.” Rob says their core focus at Smedley is to practically train young farmers in a traditional yet modern manner. “Our second year cadets ride horses and do crop work whilst our first year cadets learn to fence and shear and all the other general farming skills.” Rob says half of the work is done for the station during the interview process as they only select those who really want to be part of the Smedley team. “Eleven cadets come in every year and there are only 22 at a time. The seniors and juniors live together. “We select the applicants that we think are the best fit for the team. They need to be part of the team and being a team player is one of our major selection criteria because they are living with 21 others for two years.” The farm is split into three blocks and each has a manager who also acts as a tutor. “From there we give them the tools to achieve their goals and achieve excellence in everything that they do. We have to deliver the rest of the package and be available to pass on all of our knowledge and experience that we have developed over the years to set them up for life.” Rob says the course is not only about practical skills but also about giving young farmers life skills, confidence and a good grounding of all things farming to build their career in whatever direction they decide to go. “We try to expose them to as many ideas as possible. We have to run the business first. We pay for all the training through what we earn on the farm.” Applicants don’t have to be from a farming background to apply either. “The town kids actually go out of their way to find work and get alongside a farmer and learn a few things about

There’s a good crew and the experience as a cadet and learning those skills from experienced people is priceless. There is a huge opportunity when graduates leave here

We have a good reputation and our cadets are highly sought after.” Rob says the most rewarding part of his job so far has been watching the cadets develop and grow. “It has been great to see what they were like at the interview and what they are like now. WATER MATTERS Harnessing the sun for water

STAY AFLOAT

by Andy Bryenton

Today more than ever before, water is necessary to get the most out of arable land and pasture. Modern practices of intensive farming demand optimum conditions for plants at the root level, and delivering the correct amount of irrigation has become a matter controlled, in some instances, by electronic probes and computer mapping.

THIS SUMMER

Think water safety

WATER

Modern methods of monitoring may be able to pinpoint areas in need of water, but all of this is useless unless there is a ready supply. Relying on an unpredictable climate which can serve up storms one year and droughts the next means that security only comes from having a buffer of supply — dams, bores and ponds which can take up the slack when necessary. The problem with a distributed water supply, however, is reticulation — the issue of getting pipes to where they’re needed, and the added issue of getting power to farflung pumps. While diesel and petrol pumps have proven useful, this kind of userinteraction heavy method chews up time and resources. It’s great for short-run, high-volume pumping, but in many arid countries ‘sipping’ a little from each well has proven a better method. This has given rise to robust, no-maintenance

WATER SUPPLY EXPERTS

solar pump technology which is now finding its way onto Kiwi farms. Once dismissed as a means for pumping water only to bird baths and ornamental fountains, solar power now ‘juices up’ massive centre-pivot irrigation operations in the United States, and has proven indispensable in bringing clean water to developing nations. A variety of companies offer competing ruralapplication solar water pumps in New Zealand, but there’s news on the horizon which challenges even this photovoltaic cell revolution. A device from the early

1800s known as a Stirling Engine has been demonstrated to work well for constant-flow, small volume pumping solutions. The Stirling Engine works by means of a heat gradient — its top plate is warmed by the sun, while its lower plate is cooled by the very water it draws up to pump. So long as the temperatures are different, the engine keeps working, and its lack of moving parts and relative simplicity make it a possible future technology — recovered from the past — to aid in filling troughs and irrigating rows on tomorrow’s farms.

Irrigation Matters with Clem Powell The mystery of irrigation Irrigation is the black art of replacing water which has been removed from the ground by evapotranspiration (ET) through plants. This is part of how plants ingest their nutrients. Important points to know: NIWA have ET rates for your area, check their website. It will show rates as a graph through the year, summer obviously higher but ET is also determined by the atmosphere’s ability to absorb the moisture, so it is higher on windy days due to higher dispersal. Every millimetre of rain you need to apply daily requires 10,000 litres/ha, so if ET hits 5mm you need at least 50,000 litres every hectare, every day. That’s if you want the plant to really grow, not just look green. You need to match ET rate plus allowance for percolation through the soil (over irrigation) plus loss during irrigation, minus rainfall (if any). ET rates follow quite closely to available moisture rates so it is important to begin irrigating early enough as the plant growth will have checked by the time you notice it. Woody plants have a higher ET rate than leafy plants so kale ET will likely be more than chicory. Admittedly plants with deep roots will hang on longer,

mostly in heavy soils but in the end need still water replacement. Irrigating methods are just that, management tools, don’t be fooled by the fancy promises, they can’t make your plant excel with less than ET rate — assuming you are trying to hold constant moisture in the ground. Beware of stories telling you that a system allows you to get away with less application. They do exist but also require electronic monitoring and experience on the operator’s part. Keep water droplets as large as practicable. This is where you can save some water. Despite public perception, small sprinklers can easily have the same losses as large sprinklers, it’s just not so visible. The law of physics tells us when you expose water to warm air it evaporates. Large bodies of water (large droplets) have a greater mass to surface area than small bodies, so fine mist tends to evaporate more — keep the nozzle size up/nozzle pressure down, within reason! There’s no free lunch with irrigation, either you can have a cheap system with

lots of running costs and maintenance or a more reasonably priced system but with better application evenness, better growth patterns, and easier and less time consuming management and maintenance. Often the principal cost

differences between the two are not proportional to the results. Clement (Clem) Powell of Irri-Max Ltd has been installing irrigation systems for over 20 years. Give him a call if you want more information on 0800 426 296.

The centre for any occasion Situated on 13 hectares of park-like grounds, Ellwood Function Centre is conveniently located between Hastings and Napier, and boasts clear views of Te Mata Peak.

The centre is easily accessible with plenty of parking and is adjacent to the Hawke’s Bay A&P Society Showgrounds, home of the NZ Horse of the Year Event. “The standout for Ellwood is our willingness to meet the needs of our clients and our solution management. We definitely go the extra mile to ensure our customers are happy. We don’t say no — we figure out how we can do it,” said function coordinator Barb Jenkinson. The facility can host a range of different room set configurations. There is seating for up to 300 in a theatre style, the ability to host cocktail and canape functions for 295 guests and seated dining for 200. “The centre currently has a good level of use from corporates in Hawke’s Bay, particularly in the fruit industry. The venue is familiar to many rural people as we have the Farmlands clients come here for functions,” said Barb. The Ellwood Function Centre is a flexible environment and has the capability to host both indoor and outdoor events with acres of sports grounds surrounding the building. Equipment such as a large screen, projector, sound system and microphone

How much better can I be? About 500 people a year contact me for the first time. Most contact me because they have some type of health issue. The majority of these are under the care of their GP but are seeking diet, supplement and lifestyle measures that are complementary to medical treatment. The best thing about what I do is to share with clients health improvements they never thought possible. So here is the real question. How much better can I be than I am now? By way of example someone contacted me in May this year. He had significant knee pain from osteoarthritis that caused discomfort and severely limited his mobility. His only medical options were heavy pain relief and a future knee replacement. He had been proactive and was already taking supplements that helped a little. We made a number of changes to his diet. I made changes to his supplement programme in particular initially targeting 1,500mg of high grade chondroitin, 200mg of 95% curcumin, 6,000mg of fish oil and a number of anti-inflammatory

antioxidants. The results after 6 months have surpassed what he expected. He has much less pain and in his own words just the odd twinge. He is back exercising, has more energy and just feels better. Joint problems are the most common reason for people contacting me. Our goal is firstly to reduce the unwanted inflammation often the cause of much of the pain. Secondly we add antioxidant compounds such as curcumin (from turmeric) and the potent grape antioxidants like ActiVin® grape seed extract and its twin Resveratrol. Thirdly we add the building blocks of cartilage to improve the function of cartilage and other joint tissues. If you have joint problems, how much better can you be? Feel free to contact me. How can Bettaflex help?

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

John Arts comments:

“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

HORTICULTURE Workforce initiative succeeds An increase of 1,000 seasonal workers announced by government brings some welcome relief to the growing horticulture industry, says Horticulture New Zealand Chief Executive Mike Chapman. being able to send money back to their communities at home. “Some of our growers have had the same workers coming for the duration of the RSE scheme and they have close bonds. This is a fantastic scheme and it is not taking away any local jobs. “HortNZ has a number of programmes to get New Zealanders into permanent work and the RSE is separate to that. In fact, by handling the harvest, RSE has allowed the horticulture industry to grow and employ more New Zealand workers in permanent roles.” The horticulture and viticulture industry is New Zealand’s fourth largest export industry and aims to increase exports to $10 billion by 2020.

Government has increased the number of workers under the Recognised Seasonal Employer scheme to 10,500 for the 2016–17 season. “While the horticulture industry is strongly focussed on getting New Zealanders into permanent work, at harvest time it is essential to have extra hands to get crops out of the fields and onto consumers’ plates quickly,” Mr Chapman said. “The RSE scheme celebrates 10 years next year and it is a win-win initiative that gives horticulture and viticulture a critical workforce at its busiest time, while allowing workers from mostly the Pacific Islands to gain invaluable experience and the chance of

Boost for genetics

In a landmark trans-Tasman collaboration, Beef + Lamb New Zealand Genetics and Meat & Livestock Australia are committing a total of $5.2 million over three years towards major joint beef research projects. New Zealand beef genetics research is about to get a ‘shot in the arm’, thanks to the landmark trans-Tasman collaboration. All projects within the collaboration — regardless of which side of the Tasman they fall on — will be overseen by B+LNZ Genetics. B+LNZ Genetics general manager Graham Alder says the collaboration means every one dollar of New Zealand farmer levy investment translates to $3.50 of research funding. “The research and development needs of New Zealand and Australian producers are well-aligned. It makes sense for scientists on both sides of the Tasman to work together to solve common problems,” Mr Alder said. “Beef genetics research in New Zealand has been underfunded for 30 years. This partnership means research can progress and the results communicated out to breeders and commercial farmers many years earlier. For Australia, it means faster progress and an opportunity to advance projects that may not have otherwise gone ahead.” The partnership centres around the trans-Tasman Beef Cow Profitability Programme, which aims to balance desirable maternal traits in beef cows, with the finishing performance of the

calves and their ability to meet quality carcase specifications. The programme will develop genetic measures for better describing the important physical attributes of the cow — such as size, body condition and her ability handle fluctuations in feed availability, fertility indicators in heifers, and selection tools for easy decision-making. It will also investigate how different environments and farm systems in both countries impact on the balance of traits required to produce an economically efficient cow. This research will also help underpin advancements in genomic technology. Who is involved? In Australia: the University of Adelaide and the University of New England’s Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit. In New Zealand: AbacusBio and Massey University. Commercial beef farmers and bull breeders will also be heavily involved, along with Angus New Zealand and the New Zealand Hereford Association. The research will draw on existing projects already underway in commercial farm settings. In New Zealand, B+LNZ Genetics’ Beef Progeny Test and Maternal Cow Project will feed into the research. In Australia, inclusion of the Angus Sire Benchmarking Programme and Hereford Progeny Test are being

Half a century of rotary power by Andy Bryenton

Innovative, high-revving, thirsty and quick — all are words to describe the rotary engine, that tiny internal combustion machine which packs V8 punch in a miniscule space. It’s been 50 years since Felix Wankel invented the rotary in Germany, and that means that 2017 might be the year for the alternative to pistons to really show us what it can do. Not that other rotaries have been shrinking violets, of course. While the engine itself — an inside-out take on regular piston-and-crank combustion where a triangular rotor operates inside an oval housing to create power — may have been a Teutonic invention, it was

the Japanese auto giant Mazda who picked it up and ran with it. 2017 also marks 40 years since the advent of their Cosmo rotary car, the first of a dynasty which has grown to include some of the most iconic JDM sports cars of all time. Mazda’s RX series has a string of greatest hits, but most of us will know the latest two — the RX7 and RX8. The venerable 7 came to us in the 80s with a shape similar to the then-cutting-edge Porsche 928 and C4 Corvette, but with a block under the hood that those used to massive displacement struggled to find. Finding the gas pedal, however, unleashed a storm of highpitched noise, screeds of tyre smoke and revs up in the racing motorbike range. The subsequent ‘Savannah’ and ‘Batmobile’ body redesigns became staunch favourites with the kind of young man who likes his autos brightly coloured, fast and sideways. Then came the RX8, a slightly more sensible rotary with a de facto four-door set-up and a

1.3-litre engine that still outpaced the big fours and sixes of its day. Now, as we approach the double milestone for the rotor, Mazda have caused a stir by showing something wild and sleek at the Tokyo motor show and calling it the RX-Vision. Like most concept cars it may never reach

Busting the two-party system by Andy Bryenton

Down here in New Zealand and Australia, it’s always been a two-horse race in the world of big V8 four-door tourers. Folks nail their colours to the mast at an early age, declaring for Ford or Holden and often defending their choice loudly and with malicious use of Bathurst victory statistics in the nation’s bar-rooms. But there’s a third big automaker in the US, and they’re poised to fill the niche left behind as the classic Commodore and the iconic Falcon leave the spotlight. Sure, the likes of Mustang and Camaro stir the blood, but there is a special place in New Zealand motoring for a big, four-door, comfy, growling V8 touring car. One that’s not German, or indeed Japanese, considering options way back to the Lexus LS400. So, presenting the Chrysler 300 SRT. A hyper-muscular version of the Ralph Gilles designed 300C, which caused such a stir in the early 2000s with its ‘Goodfellas’ good looks and its purring hemi eight, the SRT shares that trio of letters with muscle car royalty. Think Viper, Hellcat and even the monumental Ram pickup truck — and you’re in the ballpark. Not to be outdone, this boosted version of the second

generation letter car, packs in 350 kilowatts — that’s 460hp in the old money. Add in space, comfort and the fact that, seen from a certain angle, it has a bit of the Bentley about it, and this looks like a real contender for the vacancy at the top of the four-door V8 table. Now, to be clear, the 300 SRT is not specifically what the Commodore or XR8 were. Those were bold, brash, workingclass heroes made good. The Chrysler stems from a bloodline that contains a shot of W211 Mercedes, and it brings luxury and an aura of subtle menace to the road. That low roofline, massive rims and the subdued growl of the 6.4-litre eight, hint at knuckle dusters hidden up a tailored suit jacket sleeve. Take it out for a spin, though, and it’s smooth and unruffled, eschewing the tyre-shredding pantomime of the

maddest Fords and Holdens downunder. The sound is there, but the fury is tamed by adaptive damping suspension, a balanced eight-speed box and Brembo performance brakes. The perfect gentleman, then? Well, they did fit the SRT with launch control for a reason. But inside, you’ll find a calm space at the centre of the
