THE FUTURE

Planting a billion trees in ten years is a huge challenge. The government’s aim is long term – for employment and climate change targets decades into the future. Today’s children will get the rewards when they are grown up. The new trees could add 500,000 hectares to New Zealand’s established 1.7 million hectares of plantation forests.

The plan is open for public consultation until March 16. A discussion document was issued in May 2017, seeking feedback and over 90 submissions were received. The consultation period closes on Friday, March 16 2018. People who submitted on last year’s discussion document are being approached directly, to request their further input. Major changes in the proposed plan are: Inclusion of a marine pest management programme. Since 2009, the number of non-indigenous species in New Zealand has risen by 10 per cent, with 33 new species recorded between 2010 and 2015. Currently, there are only two known marine pests Tom Belford, Environment and Services Committee chair in Hawke’s Bay: Asian kelp (Undaria pinnatifida) and Australian property is actively managing feral goats tubeworm (Ficopomatus enigmaticus). Reforming conservation law enforcement Department of Conservation staff will be able to issue infringement notices and reduce the number of costly prosecutions under a bill that has passed its first reading in parliament. “Someone who fishes in a marine reserve inadvertently, and does not catch any fish or do any harm, may now get an infringement notice. Someone who deliberately flouts the rules, and poaches fish is still likely to end up in court.” The bill has been drafted so serious offences, such as using a firearm unsafely or harming threatened species, will not be given infringement notices but will be prosecuted. “These changes bring DOC’s powers in line with how low-level offences are dealt with in fisheries management, biosecurity, dog control, resource management, traffic and parking. The bill has been referred to the Environment Select Committee for consideration and public submissions. “I welcome the unanimous support received in the House and look forward to receiving the Select Committee report in due course,” says Ms Sage.

“The Conservation (Infringement System) Amendment Bill updates eight separate Acts to allow the Department of Conservation to issue infringement notices, instead of prosecuting for minor offences.” says Minister of Conservation, Eugenie Sage. The bill was introduced under the previous Government. Currently all conservation offences under the Acts and regulations have to be dealt with either as a formal warning or through the courts. “Our national parks, public conservation lands, and indigenous plants and wildlife need to be kept safe from illegal human activities, but I don’t want to see people prosecuted and get a criminal conviction for a minor breach of the whitebaiting regulations, or dropping litter in a park.” Ms Sage said the offences in the current law covered a wide range of offending.

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

by Ann Morgan

Miko Hayashi and Stacia Jensen believe in a clean and green environment and taking care of our farms and rural properties. Utilising the wax from honey bee hives to create wax wraps is one way they are helping the environment.

S

tacia originates from the United States and has lived in New Zealand for 10 years and Miko was born in India and raised in Australia. The couple met at a yoga retreat in Coromandel and they now call New Zealand home with baby Kio. “We were travelling around New Zealand and felt inspired by the beauty and were determined to reduce our plastic use and impact on the environment and the idea flourished,” says Stacia. “At the time I was teaching yoga, and the idea to create something natural really appealed to us. We already recycle

and reduce our caustic use as much as possible and we decided to pursue the wrap idea and it became serious. “Bees are incredible, and they lend some of their magical property to the wax which helps us. They are awesome creatures — they pollinate our plants and pastures which helps create the oxygen we breathe. We use local wax as much as possible and when a bee flies by we often wonder if that bee has made the wax we use.” The couple found the wax they originally used didn’t work well and there was a lot of frustration with the original recipe.

Miko Hayashi and Stacia Jensen believe leaving the environment healthy for baby Kio and future generations is important

“Miko found a great recipe and we changed the wax we used,” says Stacia. “We source as much wax as possible locally and started selling our Lilybee wraps at a farmers’ market. Farmers are enjoying having our wrap for their food whilst out working, and being in touch with nature and the environment they appreciate having an alternative to plastic.” The wraps are reusable and Miko says that element appeals to country folk. “It is hard to do anything without plastic being involved. Just look at the shelves in your local supermarket — everything is covered in plastic, even fruits and vegetables are Miko and Stacia utilise local honey bee wax to shrink-wrap packaged and create their environmentally friendly wax wraps bagged,” he says. “Farmers appreciate having a natural product and it is a way to connect with the honey smell is welcomed by those bees. There are lots of types of wax just who use them. The wraps help cheese stay fresh as there is many types of honey.” Stacia says people trying to make for longer and it helps hold extra large wraps at home can be disappointed sandwiches together. mixture is also applied to the cotton by hand. “You need to be careful with the process as wax won’t come off if you get it on things like your clothes. Each wrap should last at least a year with proper care. After use give it a wash with cool water and eco friendly detergent and keep it out of direct sunlight for quality control. You can easily make reusable bags for storing your snacks, herbs or salad leaves in the fridge. One of my favourite uses is making a bag to place fresh

flowers in as a gift. Add a little bit of water and paper and it won’t seep through the wax. “We sell online at our Lilybee store and enjoy connecting with customers and providing a quality natural product. “We appreciate the opportunity to work alongside the rural community and nature. “It is great to see New Zealand becoming more clean and green, and being able to use the wax from beehives adds to that.”

Sheep springing forward by Ann Morgan With the aim to deliver the nutritious goodness of New Zealand sheep milk to consumers across the world, the Spring Sheep Milk Co. are combining their knowledge to create the best practices for farmers to deliver top quality products.

“O

ur goal is to build a sustainable, high-value primary industry that is innovative and collaborative through the PGP programme,” says CEO Nick Hammond. New Zealand has specialised in meat and wool sheep for the last 150 years, whilst Europe uses milking breeds. “Globally, sheep milk is a US$8billion industry. In Europe they are blown away that we aren’t milking sheep, and it’s a tragedy as we are phenomenal at dairy products and renowned for animal husbandry in sheep.” The Spring Sheep farm has more than 2,000 sheep and utilises state-of-the-art technology to ensure the milk is kept at the highest quality possible.

“We use modern, world-class low agitation systems and protect milk quality every step of the way. The milk is held at less than two degrees Celsius,” says Nick. Lambing is from August 1, and the milking season finishes around the end of March. The production is 15-20 ewes per hectare, similar to a system three or four dairy herd. “People sensitive to regular cow’s milk, generally don’t have trouble consuming sheep milk. Sheep milk is naturally gentle on the stomach and has up to twice the amount of calcium and protein, and it tastes delicious too. “Creating the optimum New Zealand farming system for dairy sheep and growing an industry is our goal. 100 IT’S NOT A TARGET Dairy sheep are relatively new to New Zealand but have been farmed in Europe for centuries

Asia grew up on alternative dairy, and are not surprised at its quality nutrition and digestibility benefits. Sheep milk does have advantages over traditional dairy operations, and research shows significant environmental benefits too. “In terms of genetics, the normal New Zealand sheep will produce 60-120 litres per year. We haven’t had access to the top dairy genetics, but MPI recently enabled high-performance sheep to be imported and they can produce 400 litres across flocks — or up to 1,000 litres in top performers per year, making a farming system economically viable.” The PGP Sheep — Horizon Three programme has been established for long term innovation. It plans to build an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable sheep milking industry targeting $200M-$700M in sales by 2030.

The programme has gained positive results and has had a great response to a tailored nutrition programme that doubled milk yield on a per ewe basis. “New Zealand sheep have adapted to our environment for wool and meat. We need systems to allow dairy sheep to thrive here. Our pasture is one of our advantages, but we are researching other needs such as nutrition and indoor housing,” says Nick. “The current exporting sheep milk farms run 2,000-4,000 sheep. That scale is not accessible to the normal farmer due to farm size so within the PGP programme, we are launching two smaller pilot sites in Cambridge. “A lot of farms are around 40 hectares but no longer viable, as cow dairy sites due to economic and environmental pressures. The environmental pressures for sheep milking are lower, and we are

aiming to produce a model so farmers can change over by making a few slight changes for a small investment. “We want to develop the skill sets of New Zealanders. We brought over John Ryrie, our farm manager, from the UK — he was born and raised in Scotland and has more than 20 years’ experience working on sheep dairy farms throughout Europe. Ultimately, we want New Zealanders to be successful at this.” The pilot farms will promote and train people with as much knowledge as possible. “We as Kiwis are not competing with each other, but with Europeans as they have been doing it for decades. By sharing our concepts, others will improve on them and we want to create and maintain the collaborative culture so everyone wins — it is about kiwis helping kiwis.”

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

Inmemory loving by Ann Morgan

There is a memorial garden at Lime Terrace, in the foothills of the Ruahine Ranges, where Michael and Jane Hardy live on their beef, sheep and deer farm.

F

or half a century the couple has been creating the garden in memory of those who went to war and tragically never returned, among them an ancestor, 24-year-old Lance Hardy, and four other local men killed in La Basse-Ville, Belgium, a century ago. “After years of farming, this extensive homestead garden and memorial section is now our hobby,” says Michael. The garden has a special sculptural work created by sculptor Helen Pollock. It is titled Jacob’s Ladder, depicting the

colloquial name for a biblical connection between the earth and heaven, as described in the Book of Genesis. “We saw some of Helen’s works at a school function — we eventually met her and asked her to consider making an art piece for us as she is passionate about World War One. She thought the Jacob’s Ladder story would be significant. We were not aware of the bible story at the time and it is a darn good story.” Michael says it is a metaphysical journey — the ladder is a metaphor for the

soldiers scaling ladder which they used to climb out of the trenches in WW1 to face almost certain death. “Lance was my father’s first cousin and he planted an azalea tree the day he left for war — July 29, 1916. “That azealia grew and has been propagated in our garden. The plant is a tangible connection and has got us to where we are today. “ Nearly a year to the day Lance was killed, and Michael says it is important to remember that many thousands of New Zealanders lived and died through the horrors of war. “Lance’s father and my grandfather farmed a sheep and cattle property called Blackburn — originally Mt Sorrell. “His mother manned the local post office, and we believe she took the telephone call when the message came through that her son had been killed. “Jacob’s Ladder features several pairs of terracotta feet ascending the tall ladder representing many people. It looks directly to where Lance was born and points to the memorial church on Blackburn Ridge which is a lovely place. “This work will hopefully make people aware of what happened back then.” Three hundred varieties of rhododendrons, along with azaleas, camellias, roses, and many trees grace the landscape, along with many sculptures, some peering out between plants in the garden. Himalayan mountain lilies provide an exotic touch as do forget-me-nots, bluebells, and ajugas. “We could not have done this without

Helen. Lance is buried in a little cemetery in Belgium called Mud Corner Cemetery — she has visited the grave twice and may well be the only visitor he has had.” Helen says she has been working with the Jacob’s Ladder idea for many years. “This is the fourth Jacob’s Ladder I have created. They are all different but all signify the ‘heroic journey’ and in a way, is the ladder to heaven. “A real Jacob’s Ladder in my own life was on a cliff side in Dunedin where I grew up. We would visit it with my dad — it was a real adventure and very steep and high. “Visiting Lance’s grave was very moving. This remote part of Belgium has nothing much there except cemeteries and the odd estaminet. “It is a pretty peaceful cemetery, adjacent to a small copse of trees and probably not often visited. It was very special to put a poppy and a photo of the Hardy’s memorial to him on his grave. It felt good to know that his memory is being attended to. “The battle of La Basse-Ville has never been talked about much in New Zealand. It was quite significant and many New Zealanders got killed — it predated the battle of Passchendaele.” Helen has other large sculptures in Europe. One at the Passchendaele Memorial Museum called ‘Falls the Shadow’ — commemorating New Zealanders who died there. “It is made of clay from the battlefield of Passchendaele and is fused with Coromandel clay.

February 2018

Michael and Jane have spent half a century creating their garden in memory of those who never returned from war

“It commemorates the 846 New Zealanders who died in just two hours in that battle. The second is ‘Victory Medal’, that is currently touring Europe, across three battlefield towns. “It is beautiful that in this remote part of Hawke’s Bay there are sheep and deer in the paddocks and this lovely haven. They have 30 plants from that original azalea — that is a stunning concept. “After all these years, having a family

memorialising those who died in war is incredible. The sun rises over Blackburn ridge and on the day of the centenary of Lance’s death it shone right in the very centre of the ladder — it was a very magical moment.” As the garden blooms, it will remain for future generations as a quiet memorial to mark the 100th anniversary of Lance’s death, as well as the other lives that ended at war.

Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After almost ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”.

was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Come along to one of our expos and see how it works for yourself! (See red bar for details). If you have completely resigned yourself to having back or neck pain for the rest of your life, then chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more.

TESTIMONIAL

Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips ten years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”.

“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older.

To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here

Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the talking”

DEAR DAVE AND NANCY In 2008 I had been living with a serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The Specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business. At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two, I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has brought my health back. Thank you very much for the opportunity.

Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs: It

uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots far more effectively and returns This is pure logic, if a machine is out of quality of life alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when machine is that the body is constantly muscles are stressed they become tight repairing itself, however if the wear and which restricts the flow of blood and lymph tear on the body is greater than the body’s through the muscles so toxins build up, ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. NECK PAIN?

Come along for a free treatment

Here in New Zealand,

Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores.

Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability • Reduce The Effects Of Ageing Caused By Gravity

Dr Kanji has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”.

Countdown to farm expo The East Coast Farming Expo returns for a third year of innovation, interaction and excellence with a two-day event, hosted by the Wairoa A&P Society at their showgrounds on April 11 and 12. Two days of interactive exhibits and seminars will give Hawke’s Bay and East Coast farming communities the opportunity to interact face-to-face with industry innovators and experts. “If you are an East Coast/Hawke’s Bay farmer looking for the solutions to keep your business moving forward, or an agricultural innovator wanting to spread your message, this event is perfect,” says event director Dave Martin. “The whole point of the expo is about acknowledging the importance of faceto-face interaction when it comes to learning about new technology. “Farmers on the East Coast miss out a lot, so the expo is an opportunity for them to interact directly with specialist industry innovators, but in a more intimate environment and closer to home. “There are huge opportunities for technology uptake, especially in sheep and beef farming, and our society is extremely excited about the potential of this expo and being able to host it in our community,” Mr Martin said. He added that support received from exhibitors to hold the event again was amazing and provided the motivation for the Wairoa A&P Society’s third show.

“It just shows how important the Expo is to businesses and farmers alike. It’s an event where innovation and technology know-how can be shared with those who will benefit from it the most,” he said. “The seminar line-up is developing into a real feature of the event with some excellent speakers and inspiring topics. We have made some slight changes to speaker timing so farmers can see both exhibitions and attend seminars,” Mr Martin said. The East Coast Farming Expo is industry specific — sheep and beef farming businesses ranging from extensive hill country to intensive flat operations. Agricultural business teams including: husband and wife partnerships, managers, stock managers, shepherds, business partners, accountants and financial advisors can come along and have serious conversations with exhibitors about innovative opportunities to farm smarter. The popular Evening Muster takes place on April 11, providing a chance for expo attendees and exhibitors to socialise and enjoy keynote speakers, award-winning South Island farmers Richard and Anabelle Subtil. A passion for olives Nestled in the foothills of the Brynderwyns, near the small town of Mangawhai in Northland, sits the picturesque olive grove, Olives on the Hill, owned by Chris and Linda Smith. With its Mediterranean climate, the beautiful rural setting is also home to The Grove Supply Co. They provide anything that a small to medium olive grower would need, from harvesting equipment including the fantastic Mambo Karbonium, brilliant deleafers, nets, rakes and bins. “We have a huge range of fustis and stainless steel tanks, taps, filters, cappers, fruit presses and an amazing olive press/ malaxer combination,” says Linda. “We also have equipment for orchardists to crush and press other fruits.” Chris and Linda recently took the opportunity to travel to Italy, visiting Sansone and Zanon, their two main suppliers of plant and machinery. Sansone and Zanon are high-quality brands; and The Grove Supply Co. is the only official distributor of Sansone products in New Zealand. She reflects that the trip was incredibly successful. Meeting the people who they do business with face-to-face has enabled strong relationships to be established, that will result in benefits being passed on to customers of The Grove Supply Co. “We’ve managed to negotiate very good deals with both Sansone and Zanon, which will form the basis of a review of all our equipment prices this year. There will be some very special deals resulting from the prices that we have negotiated.” After visiting their Italian suppliers, Linda and Chris moved on to Spain for 10 days, joining an Olives New Zealand tour of olive groves led by its president, Andrew Taylor.

Stopping rust naturally It’s more than wool, which keeps sheep dry. Prolan NZ has enhanced the use of lanolin in sheep’s wool to manufacture industrial lanolin lubricants, corrosion inhibitors and anti-seize greases, which stop rust. Often it is a losing battle trying to fight corrosion on your valuable farming equipment, whether it develops from manure, dirt, sand or simply long-term storage. In the New Zealand agricultural market Prolan is sprayed on tractors, quad bike and 4WD chassis, harvesters, feeders, chains, conveyors, irrigation spraying equipment, fertiliser spreaders, loaders, trucks and electrical hardware. Once Prolan is sprayed on the underside of quad bikes it slows down deterioration and provides long-term protection. Bikes can be water blasted after use and the Prolan stays on. Many quad bike frames rust out within three years with no protection. More often than not quad bikes are replaced because of corrosion issues, while the engine and everything else still runs well. So it is not hard to double the bike’s life and increase its resale value. There are also an increasing number of agricultural fertiliser and trucking companies realising the benefits of a coating of Prolan to protect truck and fertiliser loaders’ chassis operating in harsh environments. Prolan is coated internally and underneath to provide protection. The significant cost savings to fleet owners are they are reporting far fewer WOF and COF failures from rust since using Prolan products, less downtime on maintenance, fewer

part replacements and increased resale values. Even vehicle testing stations are recommending the product to customers having problems with rust issues. Prolan has a strong following with key distributors Farmlands, Ullrich Aluminium and Anzor fasteners. The product is so versatile it is sought after by farmers, engineers, boaties, scaffolders, marinas, concrete companies and panelbeaters, with the added bonus it is safe to use and easy on the environment. With the great summer we are experiencing many of us are out on the water. The use of a life jacket is a must for small craft. If you are using an inflatable life jacket once the season is complete it is important to check the CO2 cylinder for corrosion. A simple squirt with Prolan once a year, will ensure your life jacket will inflate when you need it. We will have a life jacket on display at the field days demonstrating the use of Prolan for life jacket maintenance. We welcome your visit to our new site at the Central District Field Days 141B. Keeping forests and bush healthy

A summer crew of young people is helping to keep parts of Hawke’s Bay’s forests and bush areas clear of weeds. From November to March, the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and MaungaharuruTangitu Trust Forest Internship employs university students and rangatahi from the hapu of Maungaharuru Tangitu (in accordance with HBRC’s mana enhancing agreement with the Trust). “It is tough work on often steep or difficult terrain, but a good number of the crew return the following season as they like the physical outdoor work as part of a team,” says Ben Douglas, HBRC land services adviser who supervises the programme. “There are 10 in the crew at present and they work in regional council forests and regional parks, and on Maungaharuru-Tangitu Trust land at Tutira. They are doing the tough, but rewarding task of removing pest plants — grubbing thistles, clearing tracks and

cutting back and spraying Blackberry and Old Man’s Beard.” The crew say they enjoy working in a team and gaining skills useful for their hapu land. “It’s a handy job for university students, and as well as staying fit, I can save enough money for the study year ahead,” said Harrison Woolley, who has been involved for four seasons. The forestry crews are more than just ‘weed whackers’. The internship is also known as the ‘Weedership Programme’ as leadership skills development has become an essential part of the programme. “The leadership development came out of the fact that the crew is working in remote, difficult areas with hazardous gear so need to take responsibility for

their own work. They are a capable team and do a great job of managing the leadership and safety responsibility side of their work too,” says HBRC’s Ben Douglas. “They start each season with an induction day; learning to operate various information technology and communication systems used to map and document their work. “They learn about the tools, sprays and other equipment handling. They

also delegate their own team leader — this season’s is university student, 22-year-old Bruce Morrell, from Maungaharuru-Tangitu. “The team holds daily tailgate meetings to plan their work, and at the beginning of each week they review and improve safety procedures. “They also take personal responsibility for their own health and safety, right down to eating the right food and drinking enough water.“

A change in manuka honey definition

Not just keeping pets comfortable V.I.P. Beds for Very Important Pets have been making extraordinary wool filled beds from a small woolshed on the outskirts of Waipukurau for 27 years. Former veterinary nurse, Barbie Cassidy, helped by three saddlers and with country wives sewing, make three kinds of beds for dogs and two sizes of pillows for people, including passengers. What is extraordinary about these pillows and the indoor dog bedding, is that they are filled with strong wool that has been processed through a centrifugal force in a knopping machine, which forms the wool into ball-like shapes. These move, and massage the joints, and will never go flat. The knops retain their bulk and the therapeutic effect helps aching people, and eases arthritic pain in older dogs. V.I.P beds are oval nests built on a New Zealand wool carpet base and covered in tartan cotton. Mutt Mattresses are rectangle mattresses ranging from a banana box size for mini Schnauzer to a Great Dane size. For working dogs and those kept out of the house, Tough Stuff are made using long fleece wool designed to flatten and

The Ministry for Primary Industries has reissued the General Requirements for Bee Products Export Notice. The change means that the legal claim challenging the definition by New Zealand Beekeeping Inc has been resolved. “Late last week, as part of its legal claim, New Zealand Beekeeping Inc provided additional information about the impact of the definition on multifloral honey. “We were also presented with a summary of new analysed test results from an industry science group,” says MPI’s deputy director-general regulation and assurance, Bryan Wilson. “This information showed that the definition for identifying multifloral manuka honey was initially set too conservatively and would exclude legitimate multifloral honey. “We hope the industry will see this as a signal of MPI’s ongoing commitment to a collaborative science programme focused on continuous improvement to the science that supports the definition of manuka honey.” The revised Notice adjusts the level of a chemical marker known as 2 MAP from greater than or equal to 5mg/kg, to greater than or equal to 1mg/kg for the definition for multifloral manuka honey. There is no change to the definition for monofloral manuka honey, which remains at equal or greater than 5mg/

RURAL CONTRACTORS

Getting good pasture foundation The farming diary needs to look forward by several months, and it is not too early in fact to plan for next spring and getting the foundations right for a winter feed management programme. Rural contractors can be a key player in pasture preparation and getting the expert assistance with quality machinery can play a big part in successful planning and preparation. Pasture management for dairying though June, July and August, is about transferring autumn and winter grown pasture into early spring to achieve target average pasture cover (APC) at calving and meet the feed requirements of the milking herd. DairyNZ’s advice is that this is achieved by lengthening the rotation in late autumn and winter, beyond the time taken to grow three new leaves. Moist, cool conditions mean tiller death is low. Ryegrass is forgiving of stress, such as severe grazing, except where high soil moisture leads to pugging damage. Good management to improve persistence involves grazing at the three-leaf stage. Use the spring rotation planner to manage the transition from winter to spring and ensure appropriate covers are reached in spring. Winter is the time of year where grazing below 7 clicks/1,500kg DM/ha does not appear to damage ryegrass growth.

Poor management that will reduce persistence includes pugging, which reduces tiller density and allows weed ingress and reduces subsequent pasture production. Consider standing cows off on races/feed pads. Grazing at high stock density on wet soils (reduces subsequent pasture production by up to 45% the following year). High farm covers in August (leads to shading and loss of tiller density). It is important to determine the leaf stage of your own pastures. Leaf appearance rates mainly depend on temperature and water availability with leaves taking longer to appear in colder temperatures, or where water is limited. Italian or short rotation ryegrasses offer a pasture renewal opportunity, which can kick-start the milking season, according to research led by AgResearch senior scientist David Stevens and scientist Andrew Wall. Key findings are that short rotation ryegrasses have greater cool season growth potential than perennial ryegrass. However, they have shorter lifespans and are less persistent. Using short rotation ryegrasses as part of a pasture renewal strategy

Wastewater Sew-Lootions Ltd Murray McKinnon

can boost spring pasture production, decreasing reliance on supplements. Researchers used shorter grazing intervals to maintain pasture quality. Short rotation ryegrasses have a greater cool season growth potential

and have superior dry matter (DM) production over winter and early spring when compared with perennial ryegrass. Some studies have also indicated that herbage may be of a higher feed value during the winter and early spring period.

Don’t leave equipment idle There’s often many thousands of dollars tied up in farm machinery, and the days when it could just be parked in the shed until needed are long gone. Farm equipment needs to earn its keep. Many rural contracting enterprises have started over the farm kitchen table and agriculture equipment standing idle is not going to help the bottom line. Many farmers take the opportunity to undertake contract work to boost their income sources and like any business venture, care is the keyword and the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment has some advice on how to proceed in tendering for contracts. It says tendering for work can be time-consuming, but it can also lead to substantial rewards. ‘You should think carefully before, during and after the process. Finding the right opportunities, doing the preparation work and being vigorous during the tendering process will increase your chances of winning contracts,’ it says. Tendering is the process involved in responding to an RFx, a catch-all term meaning Request for information, a quote, a proposal, or tender. ‘An RFx can come in many shapes and forms. If it’s for a small amount of work, it will be fairly straight forward, but applying for larger or long-term contracts will require a significant amount of time, thinking and resources to complete. ‘You’ll need to be strategic when you decide which tenders to respond to. Going for every RFx you come across

is a waste of time and energy. Your probability of success will increase if you only respond to ones in the area of your existing services and expertise. ‘Even if the contract is relevant to your business, you should first consider how much preparation will need to go into the application process, and whether your business is able to sustain that effort — especially as winning the contract isn’t guaranteed. ‘Losing a tender can be disappointing, but it can be an important business

opportunity. Always ask for feedback from the buyer on why your application wasn’t successful. You can use that information to help you learn what to do, and what not to do, the next time you apply.’ Think about the day-to-day and long-term effects on your business — before applying, ask yourself: Do I have the people and resources to fulfil the obligations of the contract, or will I have to hire new employees or buy new equipment?

Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

Evolving regulations mean keeping up to date can be time consuming and more and more farmers are turning to specialist contractors to take the worry out of issues like safety and chemical storage, equipment maintenance and a myriad other on farm tasks. A trained consultant can take the pressure off by evolving a comprehensive farm plan that will not only record fertiliser storage and application but also other ‘hotspots’, which may include silage pits, offal pits, farm dumps, feed pads, effluent ponds, stock yards, stock camps, stock wintering areas, flat areas at the bottom of a catchment and wash down areas. The farm map should include land management units, soil types, paddock boundaries, farm tracks, buildings, and any sensitive areas. Land management units are parcels of the farm that are similar in soil type, contour, management etc. Management units may be individual paddocks or groups of paddocks. The soil names are less important than the properties of the soil, such as its texture (sand,

silt, clay, peat), drainage characteristics and the potential rooting depth (depth to stones, water table, iron pan etc). Regional councils should have copies of soil maps for your region, but simple tactile examination of the soils will determine if they are sands, silts or clays. Problems with drainage may be seen as blue-grey bands in the profile. Regular, recorded visual soil assessments (VSA) provide valuable

data about changes in your soil’s quality. Electromagnetic (EM) surveys can tell you about paddock scale variation in soil properties and this is a starting point for variable management for fertilisers — nutrients and irrigation. EM mapping is a process that maps the relative conductivity of the soils in your paddock. Environmentally sensitive areas include retired areas, steep slopes, wetlands, native bush, waterways, washdown areas and areas where water ponds. Appropriate placement of fertiliser stocks, as well as depth of farm dumps and offal pits is important to minimise nutrients getting into water bodies. It’s probably not practical to move existing dumps or offal holes, but farmers should carefully consider potential environmental effects when installing new ones. Check your regional council regulations and requirements. A good farm plan will also show fertilisers stored separate from other chemicals in dry conditions. Provide pallets to keep large drums or bags off the floor. Shelves for smaller containers should have a lip to keep the containers from sliding off easily. Keep the storage area locked and clearly labeled as a fertiliser storage area and prevent unauthorised use. Labels on the windows and doors of the building give firefighters information about fertilisers and other products present during an emergency response to a fire or a spill.

ADVERTORIAL

Hasten to Honda Here at Hastings Honda we don’t just have a wide range of quads and side-by-sides, we also offer some great two-wheel options for the farm. Our newest option is the fuel-injected XR190CT. Meet your new best mate! The XR190CT is Honda’s unbeatable all-new two-wheeled fuel-injected farm machine, that is the big brother of the XR150. With rugged capability, the XR190 is now the pinnacle of two-wheel farm bikes. With a super reliable 184cc engine the XR190 provides the smooth, strong power needed on-farm. With a generous carry rack capacity, dual side stands, lever guards and extra mud protection, the XR190 is ready to get to work. As a bonus the XR190 is fully road registerable and LAMS approved. Another great two-wheel for the farm we offer is the very popular CRF230F. Work is all relative. With the CRF230F, even the most testing of terrain is a piece of mud-cake. This near-indestructible machine will be your farm sidekick, day in and day out, aside from those weekends that the boys whip it out on the trail. It has a low

seat height that makes it easy to ride, and the 12 inches of ground clearance keeps the motor protected and out of trouble. That’s more than you can say for the boys. The CRF230F prides itself in being lightweight and low maintenance. It has a sturdy frame that rides like a workhorse, and an electric start that gives security no matter the weather. The 223cc 4-stroke, air-cooled, single cylinder engine delivers a flat torque curve and smooth-shifting six-speed transmission. In addition it has very long front and back travel suspension, that irons out the biggest of bumps. Refusing to misbehave, this bike will make a big part of your tough job effortless.
