“According to the report, dairy contributes $7.8 billion to New Zealand’s GDP and is our largest goods exporter. This is a timely reminder of just how important the dairy industry is,” said Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy. The repor t, titled Dairy trade’s economic contribution to New Zealand, was commissioned from NZIER by the Dairy Companies Association of New Zealand (DCANZ). “While the dairy sector has had a tough few seasons, in the year to March 2016 they still earned more than $13 billion in exports for New Zealand. “According to the report, the dairy sector employs more than 40,000 workers, and employment in this sector has grown more Minister Primary Industries Nathan Guy than twice as fast as total employment, at an average of 3.7 per DairyNZ estimates that farmers cent a year since 2000. have spent more than $1 billion over “The dairy industry is especially the past five years on environmental important in regional areas. The steady progress the beef and lamb sector is making on environmental management issues was highlighted at Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s third environment conference recently. Farmer leaders from New Zealand’s sheep and beef sector have shared a range of stories, highlighting the steady progress the sector is making on environmental management issues. Sixty five farmers from around the country have been in Wellington to discuss the initiatives underway to improve environmental performance — and specifically to enhance catchment outcomes. “Those at the conference were some of New Zealand’s most environmentally proactive farmers and they represent the momentum gathering with farmers across the country,” said Beef + Lamb New Zealand chief executive Sam McIvor. This is the third environment conference Beef + Lamb New Zealand has run as a response to farmers looking for more help to support good environmental management on their farms. Mr McIvor told the conference that farmers understand their management of the environment is a key ingredient of their business and they know they are custodians of the land. “They also accept there are environmental challenges and finding solutions is as important for the sector as it is for rural communities, the wider

New Zealand population and our trading partners and consumers. “Since 1990 there has been a remarkable journey of environmental progress. Sheep and beef farmers have driven major efficiency gains — increasing lambing percentages by 25 per cent, and the lamb weight weaned by ewes by 93 per cent. What’s more impressive is that farmers have achieved this with 23 per cent less land. “We estimate that about one million hectares of steeper country is either retired or planted in trees, while a further million hectares of high quality land has been converted to dairy. With this efficiency drive it’s estimated that greenhouse gas emissions from the sheep and beef sector has decreased by 19 per cent.” Mr McIvor said he believed while sheep and beef farmers are focussed on being profitable and confident about the future, they are also focussed on meeting their responsibilities to the land and community. “We’re building tools and resources to support them with environmental management, measurement and reporting, while taking into account the many environmental issues that are specific to farms, catchments and regions.”

OPPORTUNITIES Leyton and Gretchen King farm Senlac Station, a 1,000-hectare sheep and beef property, and they own an Agri Software company called AgRecord.

I

grew up on a farm in the Wairarapa and was passionate about farming so always worked on the farm in the holidays. I then did my first year of a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Agriculture at Lincoln University and for my practical year got a job on a South Island high country station in the late 90s,” said Gretchen. “It was uncommon for girls back then to want to work on farms let alone in the South Island high country and the career advice wasn’t very encouraging so I subsequently did a Bachelor of Arts and geography at Canterbury, however I have since spent my whole career in the agriculture industry.” Gretchen travelled overseas as a lamb trader importing sheep and lamb

into the United Kingdom and Europe and eventually returned to New Zealand and worked for a farm recruitment company. “I met lots of farmers and saw what they were up to and how they wanted to run their farm and helped with their staffing needs and policy. “I then brought a company called AgRecord which is a farm management software company, created our own specialist software, and at the end of last year we expanded on this and launched the phone app to go with it.” Gretchen developed the companion app to complement the website version, making it easier for farmers to use whilst on farm. “It works like a notebook and you can collect your information as you work.

You can update diaries, make stock records, do job lists or drop photos into the system by mobile phone. Time sheets can also be loaded on — it is just like a little notebook.” The couple run a Texel/Dorset cross ewe flock and are fattening beef heifers and grazing hoggets on contract. “We went out of bulls a few years ago and were grazing dairy heifers for the live export market. That stopped and the bull price went through the roof so we grazed for others instead — this has worked well for us.” The Mangaorapa Valley where they farm is unique in that it’s gentle rolling country amongst summer dry east coast hills, which allows them to do a mixture of breeding and fattening. Dorset texels typically produce a high yielding, muscly carcass and the couple are now focussing on improving maternal traits as growth rates and yields are well above average. “This year we’re starting a hogget grazing policy. We’re currently organising contracts with breeders but it looks like we’ll be doing about 1,500 in our first year. We don’t irrigate but have 160 hectares in plantain and 40 hectares in brassicas so we were looking for a sheep policy that could maximise returns from this top-end feed,” said Gretchen. “The aim is to deliver a two-tooth ewe back to the breeder at a minimum live weight of 63 kilograms having bred a lamb as a hogget. This simplifies the breeders operation and allows the breeder to focus on his capital stock ewes.”

The Kings run a Texel/Dorset cross ewe flock on the property Being in the first year of grazing hoggets, Leyton and Gretchen are treating it as a bit of a trial and if successful will increase numbers next year. “Because of the temperate climate and easy contour of our farm plus Leyton’s passion for farming, he is good at identifying opportunities. If he sees an idea he will research it and give it a go. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t but it keeps things moving. We like to challenge ourselves and believe there is always room for improvement.” Farming is something Leyton and Gretchen are both very passionate about and although her other commitments mean her involvement isn’t to the level she would like it to be at present, she says they make a really good team.

“Our software business, AgRecord, is undergoing strong growth and we plan to expand our interests in overseas markets this year. Most companies have a big corporate behind them but ours came out of a need and can do attitude, and we have managed to grow and expand it whilst being involved with everything else. “I struggle to be as involved in the farms as I would like, as our daughter Georgia is nine months old and the business keeps me really busy, but every now and then Leyton will swap with me so I can do a bit of mustering for a break. We run a very interesting and successful operation and I am looking forward to having the time to be able to be more involved on the farm.”

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

THE

LLAMA BY ANN MORGAN Julie Insley lives with her herd of 32 llama on 26 acres of easy to flat land. The land was originally developed for horticulture with a variety of shelterbelts and Julie found the property perfect for her animals.

I

don’t farm my llama for fibre but as working animals. We put packs on them and pick rubbish up down on the roads, take them down the beach for picnics and use them for community events,” says Julie. Julie grew up in the dairy farming industry and like most farming children had a lot of contact with horses. “I was involved in the horse scene and now I find llamas are really safe in comparison to horses. Llamas don’t kick, bite, stomp or throw hissy fits like horses can.” She has had her herd for 20 years and enjoys the fact that they are an intelligent animal. “You have to learn all about body language and how to outsmart them.

They have a personal space and have to be trained to be touched.” Julie says once trained they will go in the direction you want them to go in simply by moving your head or shoulder. Llamas in New Zealand were originally imported from England, Canada, the United States and Chile. Although they originated in South America, coming from different regions around the world means there are more types including long, short or medium wool coats. “I have the short wool which are classic. The woolly ones need grooming and the shorter coat ones tend to be taller. “We use ours for charity work including rest home visits, daffodil day collecting and fundraisers.” A male llama is called a macho, a female is a hembra and a

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

baby is a cria. The gestation period is around 11 and a half months and up to a year sometimes. “Some breeders want one baby a year and get the mothers pregnant again within two weeks of giving birth. We don’t do that to ours, we let them rest.” Llama is not an eating meat although they were imported into Australia for colonial settlers but it is said the settlers did not like the taste. “Those I know who have tried it have only ever tried it once — even dogs walk away. It has a very strong flavour.” Julie believes llamas are good for lifestyle blocks as they are low maintenance. They only need to be shorn once a year, and if you only have a couple this can be done with a pair of scissors. Toenails can need trimming either six weekly or six monthly depending on the genetics. “They love hills they can clamber up and they love to stand at the top and look at the view and see what is going on. They enjoy licking lichen off a rock and having rubbishy stuff to chew on like gorse and blackberry. We feed ours hay for roughage as we just have grass.” One of the biggest health issues for llama is facial eczema, and this is now creeping across the country with the weather changes. “Check with your local veterinarian if there are any cases in your area in sheep or cows. There is lots of information online or call the Llama Association for advice if need be. “We feed ours zinc oxide mixed in their food when we know the season is approaching. Don’t take your eyes off facial eczema because they are very sensitive to it. “Like humans, they have the fight or flight instinct. Flight is their first defence. They can run fast but if they are cornered and feel under attack they

will stomp their front feet. They used to stomp on pumas which were their main predator.” Julie says if any strange animal walks onto their land they will alarm call to let everyone in the herd know. “A friend came to visit with their dog and one llama was in the house paddock. The llama looked at the dog and slowly walked away. Five minutes later 25 other llamas came back to the house paddock to sort out the dog. They are an amazing animal with looking out for themselves.” There are approximately 1,500 llamas in New Zealand — they are kept more as a hobby. “They like working and getting out to do things — they don’t like being stuck in a paddock and being

ignored. They like people and are very understanding of them. “It would be good if more people understood them as there is a lot to learn. Everyone should have a couple in their front paddock — they would learn a whole lot of new things.”

Farm fencing boost for contractors Fencing contractors are rubbing their hands at the prospect of ‘work for Africa’ as one Hawke’s Bay farmer commented, after the announcement that new freshwater reforms will result in 56,000km more fences protecting New Zealand waterways from stock. The initiative was announced by Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy at parliament on February 23, when he commented “It’s enough [fencing] to go round the world one and a half times.” The new rules on stock exclusion are part of the government’s plans setting a

target for 90% of rivers and lakes to be swimmable by 2040. “Farmers have made huge progress in recent years to improve their environmental practices and this will be another important step forward. Dairy farmers have already voluntarily fenced

off more than 24,000km of waterways,” said Mr Guy. “We know that stock standing in or regularly crossing waterways can do significant damage. While dairy farmers have voluntarily fenced off around 96% of their waterways, we want to extend this to other types of farms as well. “The proposed national regulation would ensure that dairy cattle, beef cattle, pigs and deer are kept out of waterways. “We need to ensure the changes are practical for farmers, so the exclusions would be implemented in a staged process starting this year through to 2030, depending on the stock type and land slope. “There are long-term benefits for the primary industries and wider economy from these reforms. “Overseas markets and consumers increasingly demand a strong environmental performance over and above regulatory requirements. In this context, protecting New Zealand’s

WATER

natural advantage has never been more important. “No single organisation or group is solely responsible for improving our water quality. Meeting the target will take a collective effort, but the primary industries have a key contribution to make. “In the meantime, MPI continues to work with the primary sectors to invest in good ideas which promote environmental best practice. One example is the Farm Systems Change programme, which identifies high performing farms and uses farmers’ networks to spread their knowledge. “Another is a major programme under the Primary Growth Partnership, called Transforming the Dairy Value Chain. Under this programme effluent management systems have been improved, and every region now has a riparian planting guideline developed in conjunction with regional councils. HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES ADVERTORIAL

Where happiness finds you

by John Arts

Tides Reach Resort from the front entrance looked so unassuming. Walking through to the main pavilion, I noticed ATVs, bicycles, the 28-foot Edgewater fishing boat, a dedicated dive boat to access the spectacular nearby Rainbow Reef, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, a swimming pool and the stunning vista of white sand beach.

Part two:

and are prepared by the chef using fresh ingredients with local fruits, organically grown vegetables onsite, freshly caught fish and catering to special dietary requests. It’s like a farm to table experience — fresh, flavourful and mostly healthy (except for the dessert that I can’t resist). Non-alcoholic beverages are also included. Resort casual attire is recommended and of course I have overpacked, as I forgot that daily laundry is included in the accommodation rate! In need of some R&R, my in-villa massage was heavenly, and the island scent of pure Fiji products left me feeling refreshed and hydrated. This is truly the only resort on the beach in Taveuni combining 5-star service with traditional friendly Fijian hospitality. There are four beachfront suites offering up to 1,200sqft of space and are set amongst a backdrop of lush mountains whilst sitting on pristine sand with an impressive vista.

I was recently contacted by someone with osteoarthritis in her hands, feet and hips. After detailed analysis we made some changes to her diet and supplement programme. She was taking a supplement which combined fish oil and various antioxidants. While this product had many beneficial ingredients, the amount of active omega-3 was lower than I recommend. We added my stabilised fish oil at 6,000mg daily and higher doses of my chondroitin/glucosamine/ curcumin supplement. The results have been excellent. Her joints have much improved and she is especially thrilled with her feet, as these were starting to cause real problems. The key to improved joint health is being prepared to experiment and use a process of elimination. In this case she was taking omega-3 — we just changed the doses. She was taking a joint supplement — what we did was to use different doses and combinations.

There are many diet changes that can help arthritis. By far the most important are fats. Some fats are inflammatory and worsen arthritis. Some are anti-inflammatory and reduce the inflammatory part of arthritis. Others are relatively neutral. Animal fats are high in arachidonic acid which increases inflammatory eicosanoids and tend to push the body to an inflammatory state. This is especially true for grain-fed meat and dairy. Fortunately our predominantly grass-fed meat and dairy has a more neutral impact on inflammation. As a rule I would use lean meat cuts and moderate dairy fats. Next time we look at omega-3 and 6 and see the importance of maintaining a low ratio of omega-6 to 3. If you have arthritis you should work to a personalised programme for best results. Steps to joint health

by Carly Evans

The staff, local Fijians, greeted us with a warm ‘bula!’ and beautiful smiles. Fiji is known as the place ‘where happiness finds you’ and for me, I found my happiness at Tides Reach Resort. The main pavilion is a combined lounge and dining space. Two guitars stand proudly in the corner — for guest use and ideal for relaxing evenings in this Taveuni paradise. A beautifully crafted timber table houses a selection of board games including two of my favourites — Yahtzee and Rummikub. Attention to detail is evident everywhere. From the concrete tables to the candles on the bar and the artwork on the walls. The comfortable lounges that you can sink into and laze the days away. The polished concrete floors softened with rugs and blending with the wooden armchairs. Even the accessories — everything finding its place in this welcoming, airy space. Rock phosphate benefits

There are many phosphate products on the market and each one has different qualities. Kiwi Fertiliser search the globe for quality products, and with phosphate our choice is Sechura RPR. The natural product does not need to be manufactured with sulphuric acid to make it effective. Being alkaline, it is a great fit with our acid soils. To get the maximum effect, sulphur needs to be added as our soils are sulphur deficient. When sulphur is added, the results are almost explosive. Shane Hurley says he has applied Sechura RPR with compost on a number of occasions on his hill country property Pohonui, between Hunterville and Taihape. “I have noticed increased clover growth on the hill, and stock health has improved. The requirements for dagging have been reduced and I put this down to the levels of useful calcium in Sechura. Acid in, runny stuff out! P levels have built.” An experiment showed that yields on plots fertilised for six years with RPR (Perrott et al 1993) were higher than predicted from the Olsen P tests values for those plots. It was found that on average, after six years annual RPR application, Olsen values needed multiplying by 1.69 if an Olsen P response curve, generated using SSP, was to be used to predict yield. If an Olsen P was 20; it needed to be multiplied by 1.69 which would equate to an Olsen P of 33.8. The reason for the under prediction of yield on RPR fertilised plots is that plant

roots can access P that will be released from the undissolved RPR residue but this P is not extracted in the high pH 8.5 Olsen extract. Professor Ian Cornforth of Lincoln University commented that the gradual dissolution of reactive phosphate rock fertilisers supplies plants with available phosphate at a rate roughly equal to the rate at which pasture plants absorb phosphate into their roots, so that the

concentration of phosphate in the soil solution remains reasonably constant. “In contrast, phosphate fertilisers that dissolve rapidly produce a very high concentration of phosphate in the soil solution immediately after they have been applied. “This encourages a reaction between the fertiliser phosphate and some soil constituents that decreases the availability of the phosphate to plants.”

Fish & Game New Zealand is everyone who buys a fishing or hunting licence — we are a ‘user pays, user says’ non-profit organisation that receives no government or taxpayer money. An important difference between Fish & Game New Zealand and other public organisations is that Fish & Game is run by councils elected by the people who buy licences. The major role of Fish & Game New Zealand is to protect the habitat of sports fish and game birds. This includes lobbying for appropriate environmental policies, developing and enhancing wetlands, providing advice, advocating for clean water and environmentally sustainable farming practices, and improving awareness of New Zealand’s outstanding but threatened freshwater resources. YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT’S AROUND THE CORNER

It’s all too easy to slip into a boxing metaphor when talk of the tussle for top light commercial comes around. Utes are big business and right now the Ford Ranger rules the roost, with even the mighty Toyota Hilux relegated to second place. We’ve even got an ‘undercard’ of lower-priced utes out of Asia and India battling for supremacy, but there’s been a notable gap in the top tier lately that has had certain badgeloyalists fuming. Back in the day, the Holden 1-tonne ute was king. Before the idea of a utility truck was redefined by the modern demand for car-like handling and leather interiors, the benchseated, chrome-grilled HQ was the working man’s first choice. Up against the Valiant and Falcon, the big Holden literally helped build most of our towns and cities. Now Holden are back, with a ute of a different mould. After their previous Colorado failed to topple the blue oval, GM bosses went back to the drawing board, and they’ve delivered an amped-up contender for 2017 — a new Colorado that embraces both modern aesthetics and safety while still staying true to the spirit — and lugging power — of the legendary one tonner. Under the hood a big 2.8L Duramax diesel pumps out 147 kilowatts and a maximum 500 newton-metres of torque — the key to the immense towing capacity of the Colorado, rated at 3.5 tonnes. Add in that classic one

Headed for the top — the new Colorado is set to take on Hilux and Ranger as NZ’s best ute

tonne of deck load and you have a machine which can handle the caravan, the boat or anything for the farm. That sense of comfort is more than apparent inside, with options for all the modern conveniences of a luxury sedan and standard features which older utes could only dream about. The suite of electronics, both visible and invisible, are state of the art as well. It’s hard to miss the big touch screen centre console which serves as a hub for both Android and Apple’s in-car

mobile platforms, as well as a reversing camera and entertainment centre. A battery of safety features — including hill descent control, trailer sway control, stability and traction control, a lane departure warning and even a tyre pressure monitor — offer another level of protection. The top utes had better watch out — one of the big names is back, cinching up its gloves to take a shot at the title. And for a heavyweight contender, it’s not bad looking, either!

RURAL WHEELS by Andy Bryenton

Customised to perfection

The tough and dependable little Suzuki Jimny 4x4 has a long history of use in all kinds of off-road applications — and success as a road vehicle to boot. Still the weapon of choice for many 4x4 drivers, and a companion for all walks of life from hunters to farmers to adventure sports enthusiasts. But sometimes even the toughness and utility dialled in to these machines at the factory is not enough. That’s why one company from the Bay of Plenty is set on evolving the platform, creating a range of interesting alternatives keyed in to what Kiwis want from their 4x4. Pete Weatherly’s Evolution Custom Utes company has turned the popular little Jimny into the basis for four specialised machines, after listening to what the rural market wanted and needed from an off-roader. While Suzuki themselves offer the Farm Worker ute as an alternative to their road-going Jimny SUV, the ‘overengineered’ super toughness of the Work Mate, Farm Mate, Road Mate and Z Mate variants, makes these more than just a custom curiosity, but a clear upgrade over the basic quad or UTV. The original Suzuki Jimny is no slouch when it comes to taking on the rough stuff. Developed from a long history of compact 4x4s from the Japanese company, the underpinnings of a serious farm vehicle were there all along. Mr Weatherly comes from a background in farming, but also has a literal track record racing cars

Fresh thinking — the Suzuki Jimny is the base platform for a range of hard-working farm vehicles

and trucks. Like American innovator Mickey Thompson, this often meant going to the drawing board and the engineering shed to make necessary improvements. From humble beginnings as a project to create an affordable and reliable farm vehicle, the Evolution products which he’s created are now distributed all over the country. Advancements in utility, comfort, practicality and toughness have all been carefully considered and thought out, and the addition of that most necessary piece of farm equipment — a flat deck

tray with loads of options — is fitted to each Farm Mate, Work Mate and even the totally road legal Road Mate. With a competitive price and a design focus on unshakeable toughness in all aspects of construction, there’s not much which will slow down these evolutions of the already hardy little Suzuki. To see more, visit suzukijimnyutes. co.nz and check out the story of a 4x4 legend made even better with Kiwi know-how.

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

The mystery of pumps

February 2017

15

In most water reticulation or irrigation systems, you are going to need a pump, unless the water is from a pressurised scheme at farm gate or as some lucky farmers I visited recently in Middlemarch Otago have, gravity fed from surrounding hills — a whole 160psi of it! Could this be why some couplings had leaking O-rings? I often get asked about gravity for irrigation but there are a lot of considerations, enough for another blurb perhaps? Pumps work via energy transferred from the shaft to the water in the pump body. So what? Well the critical thing here is that energy costs money, pumping usually occurs over a considerable period and the wrong pump can, consequently, be a very expensive purchase! Just as Mum’s shopping basket’s engine has a different power curve to the farm ute, which is also different to a truck engine, so pumps are also massively different in performance and efficiency at the particular performance you require. Yes, you may get away with towing the boat with Mum’s shopping basket — for a short duration, but the fuel bill is going to be the highest ever and it can’t last. It’s the same with pumps. I often see pumps from clearance sales which have run a low pressure system, being applied to a medium or high pressure system. After all ‘it’s a big pump isn’t it? The guy before was running way more gear than me’. Yup, but now your diesel motor is valve bouncing trying to produce the

pressure required, and also the pump is not running in its ‘happy spot’. You could also be pressurising a lot of water, which is going nowhere due to different irrigation flow. Energy cost again! Actually the chance of buying the right pump from a clearance sale are about the same as a winning lottery ticket! One in a million. The best efficiency is usually somewhere around two-thirds full flow on most pumps. This is not maximum pressure, so beware of advertising stuff from certain companies saying ‘Max flow… Max pressure’. This does not mean you can get both at once. Even then some of the claims are at best, ‘optimistic’, as observed by our technicians. Buying a pump Using a reputable irrigation professional should avoid these pitfalls. 1. Ask for proof that the pump you are considering is the correct one! Pump curves are not so difficult to read and you can always ask regional council field staff or other professionals to help impartially. Irri-Max Ltd and others have an open policy about what the client is getting. Don’t allow ‘secret squirrel’ stuff. Look for the best efficiency point —

is this the same as your intended flow? Does the pump have the ability to produce the required pressure at reasonable input speed? Ask about the pumps Nett Positive Suction Head (NPSH). You might not understand it but a simple calculation is this — start with value of nine then subtract your suction height (pump above water), then see if the balance is larger than the NPSH value at your intended flow. Say your pump is 4m above water (not the best installation), then the NPSH can not be more than five, in fact even this would be a call to get some proper hydraulic engineering done to avoid disappointment. Probably pump techs will laugh at my equation above as there are more factors to it than this, but my intention is merely to give the layman some warning

signs of what may work or not. NPSH available varies massively from pump to pump! 2. Have you the right of return if it doesn’t meet specs? What is the cost of this ‘experiment’? eg you may have to change mounting points, flanges, engineering, etc. if it doesn’t work and you need to fit another model. Don’t buy a pig in a poke! 3. Pressure gauges: Insist the pump has a pressure gauge so you can verify the promised performance on your system. 4. Is the suction system large enough? Avoid the ‘thick shake with small straw effect’. 5. Irri-Max Ltd have been importing and supplying irrigation and effluent pumps for more than 20 years. Please contact Clement (Clem) Powell on 0800 426 296 for more information.

Eczema tolerant cows Herd improvement company CRV Ambreed has announced what it says is its best bull team ever to breed facial eczematolerant cows. New Zealand endured one of the worst facial eczema (FE) seasons in years in 2016 when spore counts ballooned, in the North Island and parts of the South Island, to the highest in a decade, and many herds had a large number of cows with clinical facial eczema. That caused a tripling of orders for straws of semen from bulls with genetics for a tolerance to facial eczema, and the firm’s global product manager for grazing, Peter van Elzakker, says they are expecting demand to increase again in 2017. He says the daughters of CRV Ambreed’s FE-tolerant bulls are 25– 30 per cent less reactive to a facial eczema challenge than the average bull. Facial eczema is caused by a

toxin (sporisdesim) produced by the spores of the fungus Pithomyces chartarum growing on pasture. The fungus grows in the dead litter at the base of pasture in warm moist conditions, and when ingested by cattle or sheep, damages the liver and bile ducts. It can cause liver failure and death. The number of CRV Ambreed bulls with ‘high’ or ‘very high’ tolerance to FE has jumped from 18 in 2016 to 25 this year. “In addition, the number of bulls with daughter proofs in the team has jumped from eight to twelve,” he said. “These bulls have high protein, fertility and type so there is little trade-off in index for farmers who are looking to breed cows with a superior tolerance to facial eczema.”

World wanderer returns Eighteen months and 30 countries later… Vet Services (HB) Ltd is delighted to announce the return of Mike Fitzgerald to the Waipukurau team. Mike spent time working and travelling from the UK as a locum equine vet — moving from region to region and filling in where needed. “Working for seven practices within about as many months certainly had its challenges,” said Mike. “But this organised chaos taught me more than I had ever imagined. The Brits are really up with the play in the horse world — cutting edge technology, an unmistakable ingrained love of horses, and at times a seemingly unlimited budget. This means the skills of vets and vet clinics is incredible; certainly a great learning experience.” Mike takes on a predominantly large animal role in Waipukurau and the wider business. He is also excited to be putting his experience and knowledge from the UK into practice, pursuing his everincreasing interest in equine dentistry, surgery and medicine, and providing expertise to clients and their horses in CHB. Services that Vet Services Hawke’s Bay offers: Companion animal ser vices — vaccinations, health checks, microchipping, digital radiography, blood tests, orthopaedic and general surgery, weight management, dog

AI and semen collection, puppy school. Equine services — medicine and surgery, lameness examinations, portable digital radiography, endoscopy, ultrasonography, routine and extensive dentistry (a member of Equine Dental Vets), reproduction and pre-purchase examination. Production animal services — blood testing, pregnancy scanning, vaccination programmes, dehorning & de-budding, CIDR programmes, lameness examinations, animal health plans, faecal egg count reduction tests, feed budgeting advice and programmes.

Looking for a superb lube?

High-powered farm gear has come to the farm to stay. So has CorrosionX! Less farmers producing more food and less people milking more cows has become possible because of the hightech equipment we have to help us, that is until one tiny electronic part fails in your tractor or the milking shed. Let one lubrication point on the harvester go dry and best-made plans can fail. Yesteryear’s rust sprays, though cheap per litre, are not cutting it any longer on this sort of equipment. We are looking for superb lubrication, extreme longevity, environmentally safe corrosion inhibitors. We want to waterproof electronics in seconds, stop rust in the shed roof in a few hours and rust proof a bridge in an afternoon. It is all very possible! Smart operators use a very light spray of CorrosionX to waterproof their electronics. Or apply ‘Heavy Duty’ for superb lubrication without attracting dust. One litre of CorrosionX coats 1,000 square feet of metal. CorrosionX is resistance to sulphur, methane, fertiliser and salt water. CorrosionX is safe to 39,000 volts and neutral on insulation, rubber and neoprene. Applied over already wet and corroded metals, it will last for years, not just days. CorrosionX Heavy Duty lubricates three times better than engine oil, never dries out, goes sticky or evaporates, and has unlimited shelf life. It is a reassembly compound, long lasting and applied

in seconds. No mess. No failures. CorrosionX Grease protects bearings and levers from rusting out. It is available in aerosols and bulk, sprayed, brushed or even used in auto oilers. It is MPI approved, simple, super fast and easy to use. We specify the right product, solve your corrosion problems

and even build you an auto oiler to suit your application. It’s available from quality outlets nationwide. Whangarei HO telephone 09 438 8800 or find your local stockist on www. corrosionx.org.

Love our forests Our ka-rearea does

Our native falcon – the kārearea is one of our most spectacular birds. You can see it on our $20 note. It speeds through the air at more than 100 km/h and catches prey larger than itself. It’s unique and phenomenal.

CorrosionX is a super fast penetrant on corroded parts. On reassembly it acts as long-lasting protection and stops electrolysis. Airtools live longer with CorrosionX ! CorrosionX is MPI approved C11, ideal for the farm, fishing and public areas. Outstanding lubrication factor of 0.4. Never dries, separates or evaporates. Unlimited shelf life. Ultrathin application. CorrosionX waterproofs old and new electronics/electrics in all machinery, trucks and installations. Safe on rubber, insulation, neoprene and all plastics. Safe to 39,000 Volt. CorrosionX Heavy Duty forms a dripless, dynamic, non-hardening, self-healing film that stubbornly resists erosion by splash or spray. It’s also threatened. Much of the kārearea’s natural habitat has been lost to farming and its numbers further reduced by cats, rats, stoats and weasels. Our plantation forests have become important breeding grounds for this wonderful native bird. They nest there, they hunt there, and they have found a congenial home among the exotic trees – along with many other native species.
