Government funding of $5.5 million has been approved to tackle erosion issues across the Hawke’s Bay region, where the regional council is taking a ‘whole of catchment’ approach to land and water quality issues. Sediment has a significant effect on water quality in the Wairoa awa, as well as other rivers in the region. “A sizeable chunk of the funding Hawke’s Bay Regional Council receives from the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Hill Country Erosion Fund will be used for the Wairoa River, and we have the Wairoa community to thank for raising their concerns,” says Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s Wairoa-based catchment manager Nathan Heath. “Local iwi pointed out to us at a community meeting that one of the big challenges to addressing erosion and sediment entering in the Wairoa awa was coming from the catchment areas surrounding the headwaters over the border in Gisborne. We heard them, so asked ourselves ‘What can we do

about it’, and that lead to a successful application to MPI’s Hill Country Erosion Fund.” The Hangaroa and Mangapoike catchments cover around 100,000 hectares in the Gisborne District. Hawke’s Bay Regional Council will use this funding for a new employee yet to be appointed, who will be based at Gisborne District Council to work with farmers exclusively in these areas, and assist them with farm planning and provide funding for projects, including tree planting. The Hill Country Erosion Fund has nearly $36 million to support erosion control programmes across New Zealand between 2019 and 2023. Twelve councils were approved for funding, four of which had not previously received HCEF support. Hawke’s Bay Regional Council staff will be at the East Coast Farming Expo in Wairoa on March 6–7 and available to discuss the erosion funding and programme with interested farmers.

While the terms will not be disclosed, Fonterra’s investment represents a minority stake in the business,” says the head of Fonterra’s Global Consumer and Foodservice business, Judith Swales. The company joins Ginkgo Bioworks, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Louis Dreyfus Companies and Viking Global Investors. “Farmers expect their co-op to get the most value from every drop of their milk and also keep an eye on tomorrow to futureproof their co-op for generations to come. Dairy nutrition will always be at our core, but we also want to explore how we can capture more value from new types of nutrition. “The complementary nutrition category where plant, insect, algae and fermentation-produced nutrition coexist alongside animal proteins, including cows’ milk is fast evolving. It is not a case of either, but both. If we fast forward 30 years, there will be two billion more mouths to feed, and there won’t be enough food to go around just using today’s methods. A combination of traditional and complementary nutrition sources will be required to meet the world’s increasing need for food, especially protein.

Opportunities at Ludlow by Ann van Engelen

T

years old when his dad died, and he was thrown in the deep end to run the farm and now it is our son Simon runs the whole property, and Neil is his ‘dogsbody’. “We are an arable farm, with lamb and beef fattening. Neil and I have tried different seed crops over the years such as Red Kidney beans and Chicory. We started the farmstay because I was home with the children. We purchased land with an old shearers cottage on it, and it was my project — our nephew

he family have sheep, beef, crops and hemp as part of their business. “The farm originally started with 120 hectares and has built up over the years. It was Neil’s parents’ farm, and we have lived here since we were married in 1979,” says Gwen. “Neil’s mother was on the farm until she was 88, and is now in a retirement home. She had horses and was involved in show jumping, hunting and dressage in her younger years. Neil was 26

was doing a building apprenticeship and helped us with the rebuild.” The family recycled items from Neil’s mother’s house to keep it in the older era with native timbers. “We adver tise as luxur y accommodation and our first guests came in 2003. We have visitors from Singapore, Hong Kong and elsewhere,” says Gwen. “They love watching the sheep whilst on the farm tour and experiencing the outdoors — we take for granted here in New Zealand. “The hemp is Simon’s thing — he is diversifying with Kanapu hemp oil, and it is amazing. The demand is greater than expected as it is good for pain relief and joints. The plants are very tall, and the seed is harvested with a combine harvester. A cutting bar cuts the plant off and sends the seeds to the bin at the back.” Gwen says hemp is challenging to grow — there are no chemical weed control measures, and birds like the taste. “You can lose a whole crop in a week if you are not careful, it all comes down to knowing the optimum moisture levels and when to harvest.” The family fatten lambs over winter, and the paddocks are put into crop from spring through to end of summer. They grow sweet corn and peas for McCains as well as wheat and carrot seed for a French company and malt and feed barley. “We fatten between 4,000 and 5,000 lambs and 500 Friesian bulls

that are brought in at 100kg. These are kept up to two years, then slaughtered for the USA market. The carrot seed is a 13-month crop and is planted in February and harvested in March the following year. Each crop has its pros and cons, but everything has its own slot in the system. “There is always something happening on the farm whether it is the pea viners arriving in the middle of the night, or the sweet corn harvesters, and trucks to carry the produce to the factory. “We also grow seeds including hemp, grass, radish and carrot as well as squash pumpkins which are exported to Japan. “Some of the farm is peat country and is wonderful for growing crops and puts good flavour into the pumpkins. The cool nights and hot days provide the right growing conditions. “We are in a kind of microclimate here, so the hemp and other crops love it. We do everything pretty much ourselves. We plant most seeds and use a contractor for precision drilled crops such as the squash and sweetcorn. The peas are good because they fix nitrogen back into the ground and give a good grass crop afterwards. It is fabulous to be able to eat fresh peas, and Neil enjoys picking some corn for lunch at home. “We have been New Zealand GAP certified for 13 years. It comes down to good agricultural practice — we have to be sustainable, monitored and clean with no contamination. It is all about food health and hygiene and keeping ahead of the game. We love being in

committed themselves ‘in good and bad times’ to their business and industry. Judges described their orchards as immaculate, well-tended, tidy and healthy. They also commended their ‘stunning’ social conscience, excellent staff management, commitment and family approach to staff welfare. “Graham and Marian utilise each other’s skills and play to their strengths. The Hirsts take an innovative approach in and outside the orchard gate, and create relationships wherever needed to grow their business.” The Hirsts run a 40ha pipfruit and blueberry operation, which they began in 1989 when they bought 11ha of bare land and planted 1.5ha of various apples for export. “All of our horticultural processes are based on industry best practice, and we are passionate about growing quality fruit in the most sustainable manner possible,” says Marian. “Under the Bay Blueberries brand, we produce a range of fresh and frozen products for export and local sale. “I researched growing blueberries as we had a tough season in the apple industry along with many other growers. We needed extra income, and we trialled some plants and started with a small commercial crop. Another blueberry grower at the time encouraged us at a field day when we thought our blueberries were failing and then a grower from Waikato was kind enough to give us time, advice and insight into the industry. “There has been a breeding programme here, and I like growing New Zealand varieties. Some varieties are susceptible to the weather, we grow Centra Blue, which produces well and suits our market. We also grow Velluto Blue, which has different characteristics and flavour.” Marian says there is a lot of risk being a grower and she admires people who make a go of the industry. “Blueberry growers are going through some significant pressure at present, and we are in a bubble, which has some people wondering if they should stay in the trade. There has been a swarm of people entering the industry, and this has put pressure on all suppliers. That is one of the reasons prices have dropped

for the berries. It is a case of too much product affects everyone, and some growers will struggle to stay afloat. An increase in the availability and volume of other seasonal fruit also impacts on demand and returns for growers. “You also have climate and pest issues such as if it rains before harvest the fruit will split and you can lose a lot of your crop. “We try to grow as simply as possible without being certified organic and try not to apply any chemicals to get rid of pests. We have a cover over top of the fruit, which helps with bird pressure, or we would also lose a lot of crop, these are all things we contend with.” Having berries grow in tunnel houses help the couple manage the rain and growing conditions for some of their volume. “The farmers’ markets are important to us as they are our direct link to local customers who tell us what they like, what they don’t and give us tips, particularly retired growers with industry and business knowledge.” Marian also won the Rural Women Love of the Land award in 2017.“I

Keeping manufacturing local allows us to offer additional options like custom powder coated frames and custom-coloured safety pads. “Thirteen Christmas Eves ago my husband and I put together our toddlers’ Supertramp. While they slept, we easily pieced it together. I think I was more excited than the kids. It was 25 years earlier, that a Supertramp arrived in my childhood garden. I grew up on the trampoline, bouncing alone, with siblings, the whole neighbourhood. “Today we have three adolescents who have done the same. We are onto our second mat, but the frame is as solid as ever. I deliberately steered clear of a caged

trampoline, and I’m glad. I think the spatial awareness my kids learned at an early age, has been improved by the freedom of a Supertramp. Two of my three children have competed in trampolining, but we all enjoy a bounce especially when friends are over. Honestly, the safety pads are great, and the games double when the sides are clear. “I find myself buying another Supertramp this year: to go in the garden at the beach bach. “I couldn’t recommend this brand enough. They’re durable; they’re quiet, they’re great for young and old.“ 16/11/2017 — Michelle Richardson, Mt Maunganui. Selling with Bayleys Gisborne

The good oil

Following an incredible year doing the bulk of the deals across the Gisborne region and delivering phenomenal results to their clients, the rural and lifestyle sales team at Bayleys Gisborne are looking ahead to what is expected to be another successful year.

The picturesque olive grove, Olives on the Hill, Mangawhai, is home to 1,300 olive trees, which produce award-winning extra virgin olive oil. “All our oils are certified by Olives NZ, the national body for olive growers in NZ,” says Linda, “and this year we are happy to have achieved three silver awards in the national competition.”

Bayleys Gisborne rural and lifestyle sales team

Led by director and rural specialist Simon Bousfield, the rural sales team is made up of James Bolton-Riley, Nikki McHugh, and Damian Campbell, and supported by team coordinator Angela Newman. Mr Bousfield says the strength of the Bayleys team comes from their ability to communicate and work together. “Each team member brings with them an array of unique and complementary specialist skills and experience. Our fullservice rural team specialise in every property type from hill country farming down into the flats and lifestyle blocks.” Principal James Macpherson is immensely proud of Gisborne’s Rural Team, developing into the leading rural sales team in the region, and is excited by the year ahead and level of activity the team is already experiencing. With set processes and structures in place to ensure they consistently reach every corner of the market, Mr Bousfield says his team are thorough, genuine, and work exceptionally hard to provide the best possible selling or buying experience for all their clients. Bayleys Gisborne is noticing that values are as high as they have ever been, and in some cases, reaching record levels. If you are considering selling, Mr Bousfield has a simple piece of advice to help you. “Talk to us early on there are a number of things to consider when you are selling your biggest asset, if you let us know in advance, we can work

together to meet your needs and achieve premium results through planning well and strategic marketing. “The same advice lends itself to those looking to buy. Our team are working with vendors preparing their property for sale well in advance, meaning we often have something in the pipeline that may not be advertised yet.” The team at Bayleys Gisborne passionately champion the Gisborne lifestyle and are proud to be a positive part of the community they love by supporting local initiatives including Surfing for Farmers, Top 2 Inches, Relay for Life, Eastland Helicopter Rescue Trust, to name a few. “We are happy to offer advice and insight about what the market is doing and what the best options are for your individual property needs.” For a free, discrete, no-obligation consultation, give us a call on 06 868 5188.

The oils are beautifully fresh, with variations in taste due to the different varieties of tree. The Ascolano oil has a hint of pepper at the finish and sets off a summer salad beautifully, their Leccino is smooth and buttery (try it drizzled over ice cream!) while the Frantoio has a lovely fruity flavour that is perfect for all cooking and, with fresh lime, is delightful drizzled over a summer fruit salad. Deeply passionate about New Zealand’s growing olive oil industry, Chris and Linda say their visit to Spanish groves last year was very encouraging and NZ olives could become as successful as New Zealand wine is today. “The olive industry can compete on the world stage, but we have to compete on quality not quantity” explains Linda. “We just have to discover the best way for our climate.” The grove in King Road is also home to The Grove Supply Co that provides

anything a small to medium grower would need. That includes harvesting equipment and deleafers. “We have a huge range of fustis and stainless-steel tanks, taps, filters, cappers, fruit presses and an amazing olive press/malaxer combination,” says Linda. “We also have equipment for orchardists to crush and press other fruits.” The Grove Supply Co is the sole official distributor in New Zealand for Sansone and Zanon, the top two Italian suppliers of storage solutions and grove machinery respectively. While customers can buy products online by visiting their websites — olivesonthehill.co.nz for the awardwinning extra virgin olive oil, or grovesupply.co.nz for olive and fruit growers looking for equipment or storage solutions. Chris and Linda also welcome visitors to their grove where they can chat about olives, taste the oil and view the equipment.

The good green grass of home Established in 2003, Instant Green is a family-owned and operated business that has grown to become Hawke’s Bay’s preferred solutions provider for all things turf be it instant turf, hydroseeding, certified grass seed, fertiliser, mobile soil screening, topsoil, organic mulch and more. If you’re doing a lawn, the number one solution is instant turf, it’s been mowed, fertilised, sprayed and looked after for at least 12 months and is well established. Just two to three weeks after installation you could be playing on your brand-new lawn! We deliver turf to a site and also offer an installation service if required. The next best option is hydroseeding; a slurry of wood fibre mulch, certified seed, and fertiliser the mulch protects the seed from washout and provides a temporary erosion control while seed germinates. We only use certified grass seed to guarantee a high seed germination rate. To top this off, we add our starter fertiliser to boost seed germination further; this can be applied onto banks, batters, hillsides, back lawns, playing areas, drains, swales or anywhere else you need grass! If you’re a DIY type that likes to seed your lawn, then you’ll be interested in our certified grass seed and fertiliser. We offer free freight North Island-wide and buying has never been easier with our online shop at instantgreen.co.nz/ shop. “I have been a client of Instant Green for approximately two years and will continue to be for hopefully many,

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES ADVERTORIAL

ADVERTORIAL

Helping with joint pain Helping arthritic joints (Part One) I am often asked whether cartilage lost through osteoarthritis can regenerate through taking supplements. Maybe I can answer this with an example. Last year I received a call from a man in his late 60s with osteoarthritis in his knees. It really affected his mobility and reduced his quality of life. I put him on an anti-inflammatory eating plan and added two supplements. The first was omega-3 fish oil at therapeutic doses. I then added my joint formula at a double dose. That meant he was taking 1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin and 1,600mg of glucosamine with 400mg of high potency 95% curcumin turmeric extract. Within three months the swelling had gone down and the pain was abating. Now six months later he has regained his mobility and can now undertake the recreational pastimes he had previously stopped. The evidence that cartilage damaged by arthritis can significantly regenerate is poor. There is evidence that high doses of chondroitin can help cartilage, but it seems that once

your cartilage is lost — then it is gone. That, of course, begs the question as to why his knees improved so much. There is good evidence that high levels of chondroitin can help improve the function of whatever cartilage remains. It does this by giving the specialised cells called chondrocytes that maintain cartilage the raw materials to improve cartilage function. However, most of the improvements are likely from reducing inflammation within the joint capsule. Curcumin from turmeric, chondroitin sulphate and EPA from Fish oil are very anti-inflammatory. Shutting down these inflammatory processes can help reduce swelling, fluid build-up and subsequently making joints more comfortable. The best approach is to contact me for a personalised joint health programme. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. For questions or advice contact John on 0800 423 559 or email john@abundant.co.nz.

Rural contracting advantages Being a rural contractor has many bonuses both nationally and internationally that add to the variety of work on a daily basis, but it is important to have the correct knowledge and training, to begin with. Rural Contractors New Zealand is the only national association and the leading advocate for rural contractors in the country. The association represent the interests of contractors engaged in a wide range of activities such as land development, drainage, fencing, cultivation and planting, harvesting of crops, highway vegetation control and maintenance, parks, reserves and landscaping, chemical application, sheep dipping and direct drilling. RCNZ monitors central and local government policies, plans and proposals on behalf of their members. They also maintain close relations and lobby on behalf of members with a wide number of organisations, government departments and other national bodies. RCNZ’s governance consists of a national board, made up of the four zones. Operating via a constitution the RCNZ board comprises eight members and the country is divided into four zones and each zone elects two board members by postal ballot annually and the association employs a permanent, part-time chief executive based in Wellington — close to government and other organisations where a close liaison is maintained. Rural Contractors supports and promotes training and education in the industry. The main focus is on training,

which is administered by industry training organisation — Connexis New Zealand — which supplies training to the infrastructure sector of which rural contracting is a part. Details and advice on the various rural contracting training options available can be found on the Connexis website or through Rural Contractors NZ. Primary ITO also has courses available such as the National Certificate in Fencing (through Primary ITO) — level two or three both electric and non-electric. The courses cover every position in every primary industry, so no matter where you are in your career, you will find the course that is right for you and where you want to be including in the dairy, horticulture, meat and fibre, seafood industry and primary services. Feeding your stock right Sprouted fodder, primarily malt barley, is fed at rates between two per cent to four per cent of bodyweight to both monogastric and ruminant livestock. Barley with typical (as fed) protein levels of 16%, ME of 12%, carbohydrate of 43% and a range of vitamins and minerals would appear to be the ideal stockfeed. While it can be fed to monogastric livestock as a non-sprouted grain, unfortunately for ruminants, barley is a natural trigger for an acidosis-a condition that can be fatal. Acidosis occurs when the carbohydrate in grain reacts with gastric acids resulting in the production of large quantities of lactic acid which the animal cannot process. It is one of the reasons Fodder NZ sprout grain, predominantly barley in their fodder rooms. When grain is sprouted, and the natural processes of germination are permitted to occur the level of carbohydrate available in its raw form to produce lactic acid is significantly reduced. Further, the animal is able to utilise the nutritional benefits of both the leaf and root structure of the plant, which are ingested in their entirety. By
