AWARENESS

Kelly Le Quesne holding a pipi at Waitangi estuary

Kelly Le Quesne has been undertaking a 10-week study of the habitats and ecosystem services of the estuaries. Ecosystem services are those things that environments provide for the benefit of humans such as food, oxygen and clean water. The project is supported by the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council. The study uses handheld GPS to establish the habitat boundaries and produce digital maps. The organisms present will be determined using visual cues such as tracks and burrows, as well as subsurface observation — including using trowels to dig into the sediment in the quadrats. The research will allow

council to compare the three estuaries and highlight any connections and similarities, including the types of species that live in them. “The habitats and species of the Ahuriri, Tukituki and Waitangi estuaries have not been extensively studied and little is known about where and what species live there,” says Hawke’s Bay Regional Council coastal quality scientist Oliver Wade. “It will enable us to better understand how the estuaries’ ecosystems work, what the role is of the different species that live there, and understand the importance of these estuaries to the residents of Hawke’s Bay.”

Over the cattle stop feature The devastating Port Hills fire last summer showed how much indiscriminate and widespread damage a rural fire can inflict. Fighting these fires is dangerous and expensive.

What’s happening over the cattle stop? As any farmer knows, the answer is — ‘everything!’ — as you can see in our light-hearted front page cartoon. This January the Hawke’s Bay Farming Lifestyles is a little different, as we’ve matched all of the

Predictions of drier summers point to a growing hazard. The risk is greatly reduced though, if you check out the local rules for lighting a fire – ‘Before you light, check it’s alright’. At different places, at different times, there will be complete fire bans. Or, you might be able to light a fire with a permit. Or, there might be no permit necessary. You need a clear area for the fire. Make sure you can, and do, put it out before you leave. So, ‘Before you light, check it’s alright’ www.checkitsalright.nz

Stag demand reflects confidence

3

Confidence in the future profitability of venison and velvet production has flowed through to the market for sire stags, with strong sales reported throughout the country. Breeders repor t a marked improvement on last year’s results and although no stags broke the $100,000 mark, average prices were up strongly for most sales, several by more than 50 per cent. Overall clearance rates were 94 per cent, compared with 83 per cent last year. “Venison schedule prices to farmers normally peak each year in October before the last chilled shipments leave for Europe for the annual game meat season,” says Deer Industry New Zealand (DINZ) chief executive Dan Coup. “This season prices have continued to rise into January, with the published average now around a record $10.30 a kilogram for a carcase in the preferred weight range. The drivers in the market remain unchanged from last year, namely lower production in New Zealand, successful diversification by marketers into new year-round markets and very strong demand for venison from the United States, both for grilling cuts and manufacturing grades.” DINZ Asia market manager Rhys Griffiths says demand for velvet from the two main markets, Korea and China, has been strong this season. Prices have climbed back to levels reached two seasons ago, before changes in Chinese hygiene regulations led to a loss of

buyer confidence unrelated to the longterm demand for New Zealand velvet. “Total velvet exports reached $43 million in the 2015/16 season, increasing to $59 milion in the 2016/17 season. With a lift in the velvet price and the forecast increase in production, another increase in the value of velvet exports is expected this season.” Two new entrants to the sire breeding business, Rupert Red Deer near Geraldine and Forest Road Farm in central Hawke’s Bay, had their inaugural stag sales this summer. Each had strong sales with high clearance rates, averaging nearly $5,000 and just over $11,000 respectively — both specialise in breeding for velvet antler. With the venison schedule at an all-time high, demand for stags with high breeding values (BVs) for carcase growth rate has also been high. Sires for venison production bred by Ruapehu Red Deer in the central North Island enjoyed a total clearance and an average price of nearly $7,000, up nearly one-third on last season. Lochinvar stud, Te Anau, sold all 25 wapiti bulls on offer at an average $5,400, 10 per cent up. Manapouri’s Connemara Wapiti had a total clearance and prices up 46 per cent, and a $38,000 bull sold at the annual Tikana Wapiti sale, a record price for the stud.

Photo: Pauline Pattullo

There was a packed house at Wilkins Farming’s sire sale with prices up 35 per cent on last year

Interim figures for the year ended December 31 2017 reveal that females have dropped below 48 per cent of the total slaughter, a good indication that the national hind breeding herd is being rebuilt — putting an end to a gradual decline that began in 2005. “DINZ is receiving a few requests for information from new farmers entering the industry. With consistently strong venison and velvet prices, the industry is in a confident mood,” says Mr Coup.

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

BY ANN MORGAN Irvina Lunt and Craig Campbell breed black and coloured sheep near Otane, in Central Hawkes Bay. They supply a wide variety of natural coloured wools to crafters and knitters in a raw or carded state, as well as sheepskins.

“O

ur 27 acre block is an intense set up with 40 breeding ewes and approximately 110 sheep in total,” says Craig. “They are mainly Romney but there are plenty of breeds that can throw a black. We have a bit of Corriedale too.” The pair were both born into farming families and when Irvina was younger, a black sheep was bred in a white flock.

No one wanted black sheep at the time, but she kept it for herself as she liked the colour option. “I started breeding with five sheep, and then I learned to spin wool and knit jerseys for my children. Over time that went by the wayside, but when Craig and I got together, he started a black and coloured flock which was really exciting,” says Irvina. Craig became interested in the specialised fleece of

black and coloured sheep in the 1970s. For 25 years, he had shorn sheep for a neighbour, Pat Barker, in the Poukawa Valley, including her prized flock of coloured sheep. Following the sale of the family farm, Craig moved to Dannevirke. 12 years and a relocation later, purchased his first 45 lambs. “We moved back this way, and in 2013 we purchased some of Pat’s flock, and that helped us move forward a lot quicker. We started with two paddocks and now have five,” he says. “It starts with the soil — we have only been on this property four years and when we arrived there was no woolshed, and you couldn’t see the paddocks for thistles. Now we’ve cleared the thistles and brought a woolshed on-site,” says Craig. Rams, hoggets, ewes and lambs are kept separated — the lambs are drenched four-weekly until they are 12 months old, ensuring they get a good start. The couple are also researching supplements to see if a salt block, or different foods and grains will help produce heavier fleeces. “You need to look more carefully for fly strike with coloured sheep. It doesn’t show up as clearly as in white sheep so you need to know if the sheep shows signs or acts differently.” The couple don’t ‘grow for the meat’, they grow for the wool and focus on the colour of the animals for wool quality. “The paddocks aren’t small, but they do

dry out and seed and tussock gets in the wool, so it takes time to prepare a fleece,” says Craig. “This season’s ram lambs will be killed around September when they have the right length of wool growth for the skins. We want heavy hogget fleeces and it is taking time to get the right programme set in place.” Ewe lambs are shorn in December, and rams in April when the wool length is best. “We also cull at shearing — it is good or it is out the door. If the wool isn’t coming off well or it doesn’t look right, they are culled. We had a hogget with nice wool that won prizes in her first year, but she lost a lamb and then had a bearing, so we had no progeny and needed to cull her too.” Craig is also in demand as a judge, which he has turned to his advantage. Craig had used one South Island ram for new genetics, and when he was a judge at the Canterbury A&P show in 2017, he found another ram to use. This one is dark grey and is from a top Canterbury breeder. “We never had black to dark brown sheep in the past, so when we produced a dark ram we put him over some ewes and now get very dark wool,” says Irvina. “Raw wool makes better garments, and forms its own patterns compared to carded. Mature hogget wool is really good, and our sheep go from light and dark grey, to creams and browns.” White is not considered a colour, but white 11

spots are allowed within the standards of the Black and Coloured Sheep Breeders’ Association of New Zealand, a group with which the two are heavily involved. “It would be nice if others invested in coloured sheep,” says Craig.

“It is competitive, but we enjoy it. It has taken us a while to get known, but once you have a good product, it sells itself. “It is a hobby we enjoy and selling the wool is a bonus.” 6 At Heards Jewellers we carry an extensive range of wedding and engagement rings to suit your style. HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

Keeping horse

AND RIDER SAFE

by Ann Morgan Marijke Lindgreen has been riding horses since she was a young girl and with many years’ experience says road users and horse riders can better share the road by understanding the dangers.

H

er comments follow a National Ride for Road Safety event when hundreds of riders across the country joined forces to bring awareness to motorists and cyclists that if they give a two-metre berth, and pass at 20km/h — as they would with a school bus — they could save a life.

12

2

“I love riding and my horse is a good friend to me, and as any rider will tell you they become part of your family. There are many disturbing stories of road safety regarding meeting a horse and rider whilst people are out driving.” She said drivers at times have driven close enough for her to touch them with her riding whip. “We enjoy riding our horses as much as other people enjoy their bicycles, vintage cars or motorbikes, but people don’t realise simply slowing down and

7

giving us two metres can save lives, including the people in vehicles.” A horse can weigh 500kg and a spooked or injured horse can jump through the windscreen or on the roof of a car, and cyclists and motorcyclists are also at risk. “If you are approaching on a motorbike, in a truck or with a trailer in tow, the noise can spook a horse and it can bolt sideways with fright. Slowing down gives us a safety barrier to work in.”

She says with more city people relocating to rural areas education of country roads is important. “Younger people are also learning to ride on country roads as well as drive on them. It is the same when you approach a herd of cattle or sheep being moved on the road. Slow down — all animals can get a fright.” Knowing a horse rider’s hand signals is very important. “The signal for you to slow down is the rider extending their arm outstretched with an open hand,

palm out and moving their arm up and down. “If they need you to stop they will show a raised hand out front. This might be because they are training an inexperienced horse in using the road or something has happened. “To turn right we will point with our right arm outstretched and point left with our left arm outstretched to turn left.” A horse will hear a vehicle approaching from the rear, but won’t necessarily see it and modern cars such as hybrids are very quiet. Ambient noise like high winds or farm machinery also means the horse might not hear you which could startle it, and it may lurch sideways into your path before the rider can regain control. “Loud stereos and noisy blow-off valves or exhausts as you accelerate away can also cause a fright. Gently accelerate away once you pass the horse and don’t use your horn.” At a roundabout a horse rider will stay left the whole way around, even though they might be turning right — watch for hand signals. Marijke says riders need to remember to always wear a helmet and be courteous on the road. Don’t ride more than two abreast, or on the right of any moving vehicle. ‘If you are leading another animal always keep it on your left away from the traffic, and if at night wear reflective clothing and carry a torch. “It is courteous to give a friendly wave, smile or nod to motorists when they pass safely. If you face a negative experience refrain from rude gestures

It is advisable to reduce speed when passing horses and riders and to give them as much room as possible

or shouting because this can lead to an altercation and startle the animal. “Be aware of everything going on around you and if riding in a group approach the road single file with the most experienced rider in the lead. Before crossing the road, get your animal’s full attention and cross together when it is safe and then continue with one horse length between each person.” Mail boxes, flags, or garbage tossed into the ditch could startle animals. Horses use their ears to focus on sounds and may hear something before you do so stay aware. Engine sounds give clues as to what type of vehicles

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

WITH THE INDUSTRY

Nicole Harvey grew up on the 200-acre family farm and is studying a bachelor of food technology.

“I

am working through a four-year honours degree. My family run mainly sheep with a few deer and when I am not studying I help dad on the farm with rousing and mustering,” says Nicole. “When my study is complete I am hoping to come out and work for a company like Silver Fern Farms and focus on the sustainability side of food technology — reducing waste streams, and product development with packaging. Promoting farm products in a positive way. “I believe packaging is a big issue, especially with recycling, and I would like to come up with new ways to store food and keep freshness without using plastic.”

Nicole believes exporting and selling goods with environmentally friendly packaging is all part of being responsible for the farming/growing industry. “We need to keep the New Zealand Green image positively moving forward and reduce waste on farms. This will also help protect curious livestock, and wildlife from eating rubbish that has been thrown out of car windows and blown into paddocks. “I have worked in shearing gang as a rousey, and I help with docking. Having good rousies is important because the wool needs to be cleaned properly. We remove rubbish like twigs, thistles and muck from the fleece once it is shorn. “The first line that comes through is what gets bailed up and needs to be

very clean. It gets used for knitting and things. The second line is cleaned to get rid of stains and muck and is used for things like seat cushioning.” Rousies also keep the floor clean for the shearers by sweeping the wool out of their way for safety. Nicole says it is a good job for younger people to do. “You need to be fast to help the whole team. Sheep need to be shorn because in summer it gets too hot for them. Farmers often shear lambs so they eat more to keep warm, rather than the wool keeping them warm. This helps fatten them up and produces more meat. “Some people think docking is cruel, but it is actually kind. It prevents the lambs and sheep getting fly struck with insects being attracted to the left over poo around their bottoms. Flystrike is nasty because the animal gets infected with fly eggs and they start growing maggots inside their bodies and infections happen. The animal can then die slowly from disease if the owner misses it.” Nicole says if you have a lifestyle block, and the lambs still have tails, it is wise to check for signs of infection. “It is important to dag them — this is removing the poo, and keeps the flies from being interested in them. Local shearers will often come in and dag them for you.” The family sell the deer on their farm for the venison. “Venison is beautiful meat. We cut the antlers every so often because it gets quite dangerous in the roar — the testosterone kicks in and they can fight each other and cause injuries.

Nicole actively helps on the family farm and plans to focus on product development for farmers in the future “We raised a couple when I was little and one would run along the fenceline and come and say hi. It was lovely having a pet one.” “Coming from a sheep farm it felt like I have a connection with them having grown up on a farm. “I believe they focus quite strongly on sustainability, and their goals include promoting grass fed stock, developing healthy prime meat and exporting with a clean green image. Nicole received a Silver Fern Plate to 6

Pasture Youth Scholarship and the 19-year-old believes scholarships are important for youth. “It will help me be able to focus on my studies and ultimately be a successful food technologist. Being able to help the farming industry with packaging and create products that reflect the hard work farmers have put into their livestock and keep their farms in good condition is important. “Food technology is like an engineering degree but with food you

National testing for Mycoplasma bovis

Save Lives

3

The Ministry for Primary Industries and its dairy industry partners have decided to extend the Mycoplasma bovis milk testing already underway into a national milk surveillance programme. While there is no indication that the disease is present beyond the areas currently identified, checking for other possible regional clusters is essential to building a complete picture of the disease in New Zealand. The programme will involve testing three milk samples from every dairy farm. One sample will be taken from bulk milk as part of the regular sampling process at milk collection. Farmers will also be required to provide two samples from ‘discard milk’ (milk unsuitable for collection, for example, from cows with mastitis). Mycoplasma bovis is more easily identified in milk taken from otherwise sick animals, which makes testing of the discard milk a valuable surveillance tool. The extended milk testing programme enhances the existing nationwide Mycoplasma bovis surveillance activity, which includes tracing of animal movements from infected and suspect farms, vets looking for signs of the disease, testing of any animals with clinical signs, and testing all mastitis milk sent to laboratories. Mycoplasma bovis is not a food safety risk. It is a disease that affects animal welfare and production and only affects bovines, including dairy

Positive start for Taratahi

11

JANUARY 2018

Taratahi’s efforts to attract new students has paid off with solid enrolments for 2018. “Taratahi upped its marketing and as a result, the definite enrolments for 2018 are looking great and the institution’s taster courses have attracted large numbers of students,” says Chief executive Arthur Graves. “Taratahi and the wider primary industry have been promoting the job-rich agricultural environments and extensive career pathways on offer, and those campaigns are now yielding some great results.” The institution is also adapting its farming systems in response to consumer demands for greater visibility over the provenance of their food. “This year Taratahi is introducing ‘sexed’ bull semen that almost solely produces female calves — negating the need for the bobby calf trade which is becoming less acceptable to the public. Our aim is to use this innovation to ensure we have zero bobby calves on all our dairy farms. “It also means our students are exposed to some of the latest on-farm methods while educating them about ‘bigger picture’ of where farming is heading with lower input, more animal welfare friendly, environmentally friendly, traceable natural food. “We have also worked hard to attract prospective students from the

city, by showing them there are a range of interesting career options in what is now a ver y complex and rewarding sector.” “This has resulted in strong demand for Taratahi’s 2018 courses with more students already enrolled in a range of programmes at the nine campuses around the country, than at the same time in 2017. “We are finding that students are keen for a different experience in another region — so many students are coming from all over New Zealand. “An extra area of business is the increasing demand from agricultural service organisations seeking practical on-farm experiences for their staff and we anticipate this market will continue to expand.” Farm insurance companies, farm advisors and government departments who deal with primary sector and health and safety issues, are a growing customer base for the tailored farm experience and team building programmes. “That means that Taratahi is providing an on-farm education and experience that gives policy makers and influencers a chance to learn the practicalities of modern farming methods while mixing with students who will be tomorrow’s farm leaders.” 8

Female shearer breaks record

World record-breaking King Country shearer Kerri-Jo Te Huia has ‘thrown down the gauntlet’ to others in a growing of number top female shearers after another tally was put into the record books. Fellow record holder Stacey Te Huia was at his sister’s side throughout the day in which she established a woman’s nine-hour strongwool ewes record of 452, despite the heat and mugginess of the Otapawa Station woolshed where the record took place in the Tiraumea district. Kerri-Jo also holds an eight-hour lambs record of 507 set in a King Country shed in January 2012, and became the first woman to hold two records simultaneously in 34 years. Their decisions highlighted the tough rules which have to be met in ensuring the quality of the shearing and protection of the sheep, which were estimated to weigh 65kg to 70kg each and which

11

were fleecing an average of about 3.7kg each of wool. Starting at 5am, and with no one else shearing on the 10-stand board, Kerri-Jo was credited with 101 in the two hours to breakfast, and successive one hour 45 minute run totals of 90, 87, 86 and 88 to the finish at 5pm. Kerri-Jo actually shore 457 but five were rejected by judges Arwyn Jones, of Wales, North Island officials Ian Buchanan and Bart Hadfield, and South Island judge Robert McLaren. One in each of the first three runs, and two in the run after lunch. None were rejected in the run to the end, although Kerri-Jo had a quality warning in the last hour. A tally of 522 was set by Maureen Hyatt

near Mossburn in the South Island in 1982, but it is hidden in a closed register after the restructuring of records rules a year later. Former multiple record-holder John Fagan said it was a good effort and Kerri-Jo seemed to enjoy the tough conditions, with temperatures of about 28 degrees and cloudy to overcast conditions outside throughout the day. Former women’s lambshearing record holder Jills Angus Burney said Kerri-Jo was shearing as quick as 45 seconds on the good sheep, but stretching to about 90 seconds on the more ‘cotty’

ewes in the mob. Shearing for the day averaged just under 70.9 seconds a sheep caught, shorn and dispatched. It was the first of two record attempts expected this summer, with Southland shearer Leon Samuels challenging the men’s eight-hour ewes record of 644 set by former World and current Golden Shears and New Zealand champion Rowland Smith in England last July. Stacey also holds two records and said it is up to other woman to challenge the record, which had no previous claimant under the current rules of the World Sheep Shearing Records Society.

Wairarapa shearer Paerata Abraham capped an emotional night of speed shearing in Te Kuiti by beating the organiser and celebrating with a haka tribute to fellow shearer Beau St George, who died in a road crash in France last April. Mr Abraham shore the fastest time of 16.56 seconds for a single lamb to win the North Island Speedshear Championship in Te Kuiti. The runner-up was big speedshears rival and Te Kuiti event organiser Jack Fagan, who shore his final lamb in 17.28 seconds, while third was young Kaeo shearer Marshall Guy, shearing 17.86 seconds. The emotion followed with Mr Abraham accepting the Beau St George Memorial Trophy, with memories of shearing with Mr St George in the woolshed years ago, followed by Tika Tonu, the haka of Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa iwi Ngati Kahungunu. The trophy was presented by Mr St George’s father, former world lamb shearing record holder Neil St George, who in front of the speedshear crowd spoke of the death of a son as being ‘the most cruelest thing in the whole, whole world’ that a father could face. With a special message for the younger ones embarking on the lifestyle of a globetrotting shearer he warned of

the driving on different sides of the road around the world. “If you can do one thing for me take utter care. I’m going through so much pain I can’t even describe it. Every day I cry,” he said. Mr Abraham passed the trophy back to the St George family, saying it should be in their care between each presentation. The winning shearer did, however, keep the $2,000 winning prize. Daniel Langlands, of Piopio, shore 25.7 seconds to claim $600 as winner of a unique Senior final, in which Catherine Mullooly, currently working at Piopio but from Matawai, near Gisborne, was runner-up in 27.18 seconds, and third place went to Eleonore Resneau, of France, with 27.66 seconds. The two women beat three other male finalists. Mr Fagan and Ms Mullooly beat Ms Resneau and her brother Thimoleon Resneau in an international match and there was a fitting end to a farmers’ speedshear, won by Neil St George.

Irrigation Matters with Clem Powell The mystery of pipelines Pipes, hoses and other means of water conveyance are one of the most maligned part of an irrigation or water delivery system. This also applies to household and stock water systems.

Usually some generosity is made towards the pump and equipment purchase but then the purse strings tighten and the minimum diameter pipe will be used, perhaps egged on by an unqualified salesman who has a special price on offer — just because someone told you it is appropriate “my relative uses it on his farm” etc doesn’t mean that it will do the job for you. It is almost impossible to have too large a pipeline diameter (within financial constraints), contrary to urban myth I often come up against. Another myth is the “you need to reduce the pipe size as you get further out to keep the liquid speed up”. Quite incorrect as a bit of experimenting or google of “pressure drop” will show. Any knowledgeable specialists should be able to calculate the size required from the flow required over the distance required and then apply acceptable pressure loss, to reach correct sized pipe. It isn’t rocket science. All reputable

8

FOREST & WOODLOT OWNERS

pipe manufacturers will have friction loss tables which should be referred to. Ask to see the calculation, after all you are paying for their product! This is particularly so if working in PE or uPVC pipe. These products are extruded with a standard sized outside diameter and different wall thicknesses are used (giving different internal bore sizes) to give the various pressure ratings. As the walls thicken the flow speed and pressure loss will increase. So if say MDOD90 6.3bar pipe is considered for flow of 30,000 l/hr, RX Plastics Technical Guide gives friction loss of 2.9 mH loss/ 100m. Let’s assume the job is 1,000m (29mH loss, 42 psi) rather high but for the sake of the example: If during the installation this were changed to MDOD90 9 bar due to short supply or whatever, the same manual tells us that MDOD90 9 bar at 30,000 l/H has 3.6 mH /100m or 52 psi loss over the distance. 7mH/ 10 psi could mean the performance is possibly going to be short of desired. Intuition is important Two Lincoln University researchers have been examining how farmers make their decisions, the role intuition plays, and how it can be improved. Dr Peter Nuthall and Dr Kevin Old, from the Department of Land Management and Systems, have had their analysis of farmers’ intuitive decision-making published in the international rural research journal Rural Studies. Data was gathered from more than 700 farmers. “Farmer intuition has never been analysed to this extent before,” Dr Nuthall said. “Research has shown farmers make the majority of decisions using their intuition. They do not formally analyse each decision, but use their mental powers to decide on what action to take. “Sometimes the decision is instantaneous, but in others a range of thought levels are brought to bear before acting. Good decision intuition is not a mysterious process. “Profit and other assessments show some farmers are good intuitive decision makers, others not so good.” Farmers with little experience, whether they have good potential intuition or not,

find it difficult to make good decisions. “The intuition process often uses what is called ‘pattern matching’, where the brain uses experience to match up past events with the current decision problem,” says Dr Nuthall. “The farmer’s intuition then comes up with what the brain believes to be the correct action, however intuition is more than just pattern matching, intuition develops with a farmer’s thought process, self-criticism and review.” The new research showed how farmers can improve their intuition. “Obviously the farmers’ technical farming knowledge is important as a forerunner, but equally is the attention to carefully observing the state of the farm and the relevant markets. “Observations must be accurate and cover all the issues important to any decision, and the farmer must be good at anticipating the path ahead — looking ahead skills are critical in assessing alternative actions to solve any decision

problem. These all tend to be inbuilt skills.” He said these skills can be improved with attention and practice. “A farmer should analyse all past decisions and take on board any lessons on offer, discussing past actions with colleagues and family helps improve mind held patterns and produce good solutions.” As an aid to improve intuition Dr Nuthall has produced a novel The Intuitive Farmer: Inspiring Management Success, which tells the story of a group of farmers and their meetings covering a range of management challenges and Dr Peter Nuthall from the skills associated with intuition. Department of Land Management and Systems Guided by meeting facilitators, the farmers sort out each through the process of modifying their other’s decision problems, learning and ‘management style’.
