Mahora school students visit a similar wetland area at Pekapeka Regional Park

The new 15-hectare wetland is next to the six-hectare Horseshoe Wetland created in the regional park by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council in 2009. A partnership approach is funding the construction of the wetland in the flood plain of the Tutaekuri and Ngaruroro River near the coast at Awatoto. The project partners are Te Wai Mauri Trust, which has obtained Te Wai Maori funding, Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Inc, Napier Port and Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, which is managing the project. Te Kaha Hawaikirangi of Te Wai Mauri Trust says that improving traditional food gathering sites habitat for species such as eel, flounder and whitebait is one of the key outcomes of the project. The wetland will also provide a home for bittern, which are endangered wetland birds, plus other wading birds. The Waitangi estuary and three rivers create one of the most important ecosystems in Hawke’s Bay, and the area is considered a biodiversity hot spot. “As the partnership between all the organisations involved is strong, we have been able to bring this project together quickly to help restore our environment. We have lost 98 per cent of the wetlands in Hawke’s Bay, and this is another step to reverse the trend of habitat loss,” says Mr Hawaikirangi.

Planning for this wetland has been more than 15 years. Earthworks started in mid-January with a dawn karakia led by Ngati Kahungunu representatives. Leading experts in wetland habitat construction and fish passage have collaborated to design the outlet between the wetland and the Tutaekuri, which forms a series of pools and swales to give fish a chance to rest. The new wetland is being constructed by Burgiss Contracting who are building a shallow stopbank to encircle a low-lying area of land, which will be permanently flooded. Three islands for wildlife habitat and secure bird nesting will also be created. “The contractors are doing a fantastic job. They have strong experience in the mining industry and are enjoying this opportunity to create something with environmental benefits that will be a great asset to Hawke’s Bay,” says HBRC’s project manager, Antony Rewcastle. “There has been amazing support and enthusiasm from sponsors and project partners. Planting around the edges of the new wetland will be a key element, and we will be holding community planting days in June/July where people can get involved, like they have with the nearby wetlands at Atea a Rangi and our other enhancement sites.”

New global agritech initiative New Zealand is going to take ownership of a new global initiative, which will lead the way in producing food to feed the world population. By the year 2050, the global population will reach 10 billion people, requiring a 70 per cent increase in food production. AgritechNZ chief executive Peter Wren-Hilton recently returned from the United States where he met a number of key AgritechNZ partners in Farm2050, which was set up to solve the global food challenge. Mr Wren-Hilton says the main purpose of the trip was to discuss preparation for the three-year agritech initiative based on identifying disruptive technologies around nutrients. “I met several leaders from a number of the world’s largest agribusinesses such as Bayer CropScience, Corteva, Syngenta and Nutrien. We looked at the impact of nutrient application and measurement from two perspectives; plant absorption efficiency and environmental impact. For farmers and growers in New Zealand, both are key metrics. “As Farm2050’s first country partner, New Zealand has a pivotal role to play. We have advanced farming systems and deep domain knowledge. We produce some of the finest agricultural product in the world, yet our farmers and growers are well aware of the

regulatory environment in which they now operate. Consumer concerns about environmental impact, negative media comment and government regulation are all affecting sentiment within the primary sector. “As a first step, Farm2050, in conjunction with AgritechNZ, will work with New Zealand farmers, leading agriculture co-operatives and government to establish field trials to test select emerging nutrient technologies. “We plan to engage with New Zealand’s major existing players in this space, as well as early-stage agritech companies seeking to address these critical issues. “There is also great science often locked up in our universities and crown research institutes. Leveraging these combined assets can help New Zealand’s agritech sector take a global lead in improving both plant absorption efficiency, as well as reducing environmental impact through the smarter use of nutrients.” He says he will soon be releasing a detailed white paper that will drive the agritech initiative and will also be announcing some of the globallyrecognised companies that will be working with AgritechNZ to help

always been one to try different beers, and while I never got into homebrewing, I loved home tasting.” Stu arrived in the Hawke’s Bay not knowing anyone, but keen to get started in his dream job, and says it’s knowing there is a vast variety of beers, which can be made from a few simple ingredients that really excites him. “Brewing is a combination of science/ knowledge and situation/artistry. There is more to it than tasting beer — there is actually a lot of hard work and dedication required.” General manager, Greg Forrest, says a good brewer is a combination of passion and commitment and Stu has both. “Passion will only take you part of the way, but it’s the commitment that sees you through. Hawke’s Bay Brewery is a good training ground for young brewers.

Hawke’s Bay brewery have a small team, and everyone is involved in the process of making each product

Stu believes quality control is a very important aspect of creating a good brew Our team is small, so everyone has to learn how to do everything, and I think that’s the difference between waking up and having to go to work and waking up and wanting to go to work.” The brewery is 22 years old, and although that means it is not set up for tours like some of the more modern ones, the brewery has many years of experience to draw upon. “We were around before craft beer was really vogue. “If you start a small brewery you are automatically craft beer because you have to make it different to cover the costs,” said Greg. Other than quality control, Stu says his favourite part of the brewing process

Ace offal cookers for dog and pig food, also available as grain cookers for horses

is the very start, where the malted barley is mashed. “I like watching the raw ingredients being transformed into the end product.” A nice flavour makes a good beer, but Stu recognises everyone has different preferences. “A beer is good as long as it is brewed with care and has no noticeable faults such as oxidation or Dimethyl sulfides. These days, craft beer is readily available in supermarkets and bottle stores. If you are used to Tui lagers or similar, I would try to visit The Filter Room, Roosters, Brave Brewing or just browse your local supermarket and go from there.” It was Stu’s drive to make a career out of something he was truly interested

in that drove him to join the Hawke’s Bay Brewing Company team. “If you are truly passionate, you will make it happen. I moved to a new town where I knew no one — because I knew this was the career for me. The only thing I would change would be getting into brewing sooner.”

SCHOLARSHIP WINNER GENERATES INDUSTRY IDEAS By Denise Gunn Silver Fern Farms Plate to Pasture scholarship winner for the western North Island has a background immersed in agriculture. Monique Yule is one of six inspirational young people from around New Zealand to receive one of these scholarships this year.

R

aised on her family’s sheep and beef farm in Elsthorpe in central Hawke’s Bay, Monique’s passion for agriculture stemmed from a young age. “Being brought up on a family-run farm, I was highly involved in farming operations from a very young age, which I thoroughly enjoyed.” Monique is currently studying at Massey University towards a bachelor of food technology with honours, majoring in food product development. “My desire to study food technology came about as I only had strong interests for agriculture and food science. This led me to the idea of working with food

directly related to agriculture, either in the meat, dairy or horticulture sectors, and allowing me to combine my passion for both fields.” A family friend saw the Plate to Pasture scholarship advertised and mentioned it to Monique. Growing up on a red meat farm, the Silver Ferns Farm brand was a common household label. The scholarship appealed to Monique as she has a strong desire to work within the meat sector after graduation, combining her passion for food and the agricultural sector. Each scholarship winner received $5,000 to further their careers in the red meat sector.

3

Monique was raised on her family’s farm in central Hawke’s Bay “The financial aid was a huge contributor as the scholarship would allow me to focus solely on my studies, without needing to find a part-time job to financially assist me. Alongside

the financial aid, I also felt that the opportunity would be a great way to hear experiences from people who have entered this field, and expand my knowledge within the red meat sector.”

Silver Fern Farms chief executive, Simon Limmer, said he is delighted to see the passion young New Zealanders have shown for the red meat industry through the applications submitted to the annual scholarship programme. “We want to thank all applicants for entering the Plate to Pasture Youth Scholarships, the calibre of the entries was high and showed great initiative and insights into our industry, at all levels. “Through the scholarships, we have connected with the industry’s emerging talent who want to contribute to a sustainable future for our red meat sector — from plate to pasture.” This year, applicants were asked to describe their ‘Big Idea’ for the red meat industry, as well as naming three challenges or opportunities they believe are important to the sector. Monique’s big idea for the red meat industry is to better accommodate highincome earners over a wide variety of niche markets. It would increase the consumer base of the red meat industry and add extra value to current red meat products. “Niche markets, which I believe can be better targeted by the red meat industry include toddlers, the elderly and busy workers. “I feel that the elderly and toddler niche could be better targeted by the red meat industry, as they make up a large portion of the global population. Currently, there are no meat products on the market which specifically target them.” She also suggested the needs of toddlers and the elderly could be met by

producing fortified, convenient, pre-cut and easy to chew red meat products.” Monique found out she was a successful scholarship recipient through a phone call from the Silver Ferns Farms senior communications adviser. “The news was very exciting as I never thought my application would be one of the six successful applications.” All successful recipients were invited to attend the Silver Fern Farms Plate to Pasture conference in Rotorua. “The experience I gained through the conference was very eye-opening and insightful. It gave me a great understanding of all areas of the supply chain required to get a product of high quality from the primary sector, right through to consumers globally.” After graduating, Monique would like to experience how the food industry operates in different areas of the globe. “I would love to travel overseas to Asia and South America to experience different food cultures, and analyse how various food cultures could be integrated into the western diet.” Long-term Monique would like to be involved in enhancing food products within the agricultural sector, to meet consumers’ wants and needs. “I have very passionate views for creating innovative food products, which are beneficial to consumers by being of high nutritional value and quality. Monique said working in direct relation to agriculturally-produced foods would combine her passion for agriculture and food science. “It would also allow me to work

with wholesome, nutritious foods to produce products which are beneficial

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

Tutira resident Mark Kearney established a walnut grove of some 300 trees in 1998 as a new venture and career change.

“W

e planted the orchard as an investment and property improvement for the future. I took redundancy from my job, and when we bought this property in 1997 there were 35 old English variety walnut trees on the land,” says Mark. “The nuts that were here tasted terrible, so I contacted the New Zealand Tree Croppers Association to find out about other varieties. We went to a couple of events in Christchurch and discovered the Meyric walnut, how to look after them, and we then planted 300 trees. 3

w.harrispumps.co.nz

“The Meyric were discovered in Palmerston North when some nursery guys down there found a tree on a property. The flesh is blonde in colour, and the shell is thin and can be opened with your fingers, so they took cuttings and grafted them onto the Nigra variety, which is a black walnut. “I have sampled a lot of walnut varieties, and these are by far the best flavour in New Zealand.” Mark says there is a fair amount of work involved in growing the trees including regular pruning to keep them healthy.

Mark Kearney planted 300 Meyric walnut trees on his property in Tutira

“Walnut blight can be a problem, but we have that under control. When my brother and I received our stock they were simply a stick with buds on at five feet tall — we planted them and waited. “The second year there were nuts, but we left them, and for the first five years I pruned every branch to force them to

grow upwards quickly to get the tractor underneath and then we left them alone. “It took 10 years before we decided to sell them — prior to that I would give them away “ Mature trees will produce approximately 180kg yearly. Harvest is at the end of March, lasting three to six weeks.

“We pick up everything, even the early dropped ones and the nuts are placed in drying racks for approximately a month before shelling starts,” says Mark. “I regularly take one from each rack and check it for dryness and flavour ensuring that they aren’t bitter. All nuts are shelled by machine and nothing goes to waste.” The shells go in the coal range to heat the water, and the autumn leaves are left on the ground to become part of the trees’ natural food chain. “If you put walnuts in the fire it heats very quickly because of the oil content. If a tree falls over, as long as the roots are attached and lying on the ground, it will regrow. You remove the branches and prune it as normal. They are very self-preserving, one big tree was lying on the ground when we arrived, and it is still growing. Most people have a mix of trees, but I prefer one variety.” Mark says to his knowledge more walnut types have been discovered in New Zealand than other countries. “In America, most farms have black walnuts around the boundaries — they became valuable for the timber. Different trees are used for different things — one is a smooth wood, one is rough — rough is for gun stocks and one for car interiors. “Walnut wood has a beautiful pattern, and when you plant a young tree, you get a bar and give it a few whacks when it’s growing. This creates a wavy pattern

8

The wood from walnut trees is described as beautiful and is used for a variety of things including the interior of cars

and is what car makers overseas do for their vehicle wood. “Originally emigrants in the 1800s planted the trees here. It would be great if farmers grew them again as shelter for their stock, they look good on the land. “I don't have pest problems, and we use sheep to keep the grass down. Walnuts are very versatile — if you have a scratch on timber and rub the nut on the scratch, it will hide it. You can put them in a blender with a bit of butter or oil with salt to taste and make walnut butter and people pickle the young nuts in the hull.” They are full of antioxidants, and Mark says dogs and horses love them.

“My dogs grab a walnut and lay down and have a munch so do the horses — cows and sheep don't bother. “This variety needs to be grafted. I give my trees a heavy prune every five years and at present sell them at $28 a kilo and 200 gram bags for $6. We only sell shelled walnuts, which are best kept in the fridge or freezer. Being oil-based they stay separated and don’t freeze. “We have no regrets getting into walnuts, they are not the biggest of nuts, but because the shell is thin, we get more ‘meat’ than most. People love the nuts, and we believe the Meyric are the best you can buy by far — we very rarely find a bad one."

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

S for superlative strength

by Andy Bryenton

It’s tough, finished in red, has a big ‘S’ on the front, comes from a humble rural lineage but offers superhuman strength and power to save the day. No, it’s not the world’s most recognisable superhero — it’s the latest offering from farming icon Massey Ferguson. With a bold new ‘S’ series of performance tractors rolling out across the world, the name that’s synonymous with tractors — even to non-farmers — have played their cards conservatively in regards to style. But under the skin there’s a world of difference between the French-built S range and those which have come before. A focus on operator comfort and ease of use has seen changes to how the machines are operated, and research and development in the engineering department has delivered a potent range of engines which combine the trifecta of lower emissions, better fuel economy and more power. Take for example the ‘middleweight boxer’ of the S range. The MF6700S delivers a smooth and willing 175hp from a four-cylinder unit under the hood, making it the most powerful inline four in the tractor world. If this was a road going car, it would be fitted with M-Power or AMG badges. As it is, that power is directed not to outright speed, but to reliable torque via a selection of gearing solutions, all of which are mated to simplified and streamlined controls. That’s not the only comparison with the world of motoring. Power is nothing without control, and so the MF6700S

9

also delivers extreme agility, with the smallest turning circle in its class and both a compact frame and light weight. On the farm, this means less soil compaction in transit and on the job. It also means the ability to navigate in tight spaces, barnyards and sheds to fulfil a multi-application role.

Certainly, with its power rivaling that of a bulkier six-cylinder tractor, and the option to fit a handy loader on the front or a whole range of implements aft, this is a versatile option for mixed farms, those who combine dairy with cropping, or demanding contracting applications. Massey Ferguson has

never been a company to rest on past glories, instead pressing forward with new developments, some of which have famously changed the game in the past. With their S series — not just the MF6700S, but an entire range through to 370hp — they continue to innovate for the future.

Responsible dairy nominations open

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

Nominations to a national award that recognises dairy farmers who demonstrate leadership in their approach to sustainable dairying and who are ambassadors for the industry opened February 1. The Fonterra Responsible Dairying Award was introduced last year by the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards to recognise dairy farmers who are respected by their farming peers and their community for their attitude and role in sustainable dairying. The farmer could come from any of New Zealand’s milk suppliers and any farmer or farming partnership who demonstrates a high calibre of performance and leadership in the areas of responsible and sustainable care of people, animals, ecosystems and communities are eligible to enter. “Farmers are being encouraged to share stories of how they are farming responsibly, both environmentally and socially, and to showcase excellence,” says New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards executive chair, Rachel Baker. “Many of our winners and entrants from our Dairy Trainee, Dairy Manager and Share Farmer awards programmes do just this and progress to leadership roles within the industry and their communities.” “This award gives us the opportunity to recognise farmers that have progressed to ownership, demonstrate leadership in their farming practices and are a role model for our younger farmers coming through.” The 2018 inaugural winners of the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards

Wynn and Tracy Brown — last year’s responsible dairying award winners

Fonterra Responsible Dairying Award were Matamata farmers Wynn and Tracy Brown, who are considered leaders within the dairy industry, in all areas of sustainability, business and farm management, as well as in the way they give back to the industry and community. The couple believes that they are only caretakers of the land for future generations and want to leave it in better condition than when they took it on. “We want to leave a legacy. Sustainable farming is about ‘walking the walk’ not just ‘talking the talk’, it’s about what you do when no-

one is looking,” said the Browns. “It’s also about not just living for the here and now, but about thinking for the future and those that will come after you.” The New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards are supported by national sponsors Westpac, DeLaval, Ecolab, Federated Farmers, Fonterra, Honda Motorcycles, LIC, Meridian Energy and Ravensdown, along with industry partners DairyNZ and Primary ITO. Nomination forms are available at dairyindustryawards.co.nz, with entries closing March 20.

Trail blazer

by Andy Bryenton

When it comes to flat out speed across rough terrain, the Can Am Maverick has the heritage, the race-bred pedigree and the sheer power to make you believe you’re actually in the cockpit of a lowflying jet fighter. Watching the Maverick’s masterwork of suspension in slow motion as those big knobbly tyres claw at the sand and dirt is an engineering class in itself.

So it’s a natural progression for the product development team at Can Am headquarters to think about applying this race-winning formula to a different discipline. Throw into the mix the toughness and nimble handling of their farming and hunting off roaders — made for less speed and more practicality — and you have one of the best ideas wrapped around an internal combustion engine since Ford put a v8 in the first edition Mustang. The new Maverick Trail is only 50 inches wide — that’s 1.27 metres and that means rocky, twisting trails are its natural habitat. Still seating two in fully roll-cage enclosed comfort, this little firecracker is designed to inspire confidence with a whole lot of low-down torque from a 1000cc, 75 horsepower Rotax engine fed air through highmounted filtered intakes to keep clear of the dust. There’s also the option of a 51hp 800cc mill, but that famous one litre

Can Am Maverick Trail Blazer is a true masterpiece

power plant comes with a list of racing wins as long as your arm in other chassis, so adventure seekers might seek out the bigger displacement for more thrills. The Maverick Trail is not just easy to transport — though needless to say that small footprint works well when it’s time to put it on a trailer or up on a truck deck. The application of a deliberately feedback-rich power steering system means that there’s no struggling and sweating to wrestle with the wheel; at

low speeds the system adjusts to give more of a boost, helping out when the trail is choppy or in tight corners. This is a machine for the explorers, the trail blazers, those who want to really get out into the wilderness and need a machine as unstoppable as the legendary drover’s horse of days gone by. Knowing this, Can Am have even fitted an upgraded magneto for additional electric power — pick and choose from winches, lights and other accessories to make this off road machine truly personalised.

‘Watch time’ for myrtle rust

Summertime is ‘watch time’ with Biosecurity New Zealand and the Department of Conservation asking the public to check their local myrtle plants to help track the spread of myrtle rust, with the disease likely to be more active during warmer weather and likely to spread to new areas where it hasn’t been seen before. Plants including pohutukawa, rata, manuka, kanuka and ramarama are vulnerable to the disease. The fungus, which is mainly spread by wind, generally infects shoots, buds, and young leaves of myrtle plants. Infected plants show typical symptoms including bright yellow powdery spots on the underside of leaves. If you think you see symptoms of myrtle rust remember to not touch the plant or collect samples, but take pictures and report it to Biosecurity New Zealand’s Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline on 0800 80 99 66. As of December the disease has been confirmed on 811 properties across most of the North Island and upper areas of the South Island. Taranaki, Auckland and Bay of Plenty are the most seriously affected areas. Biosecurity New Zealand’s manager for recovery and pest management, John Sanson, says a cross-sector working group has developed a national long-term management plan for myrtle rust. “This working group includes members from Biosecurity New Zealand, the Department of Conservation, Maori organisations with an interest in biosecurity, the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, regional councils,

and the Project Crimson Trust. “The group has provided recommendations on agreed goals that will underpin our collective approach to managing myrtle rust. “We are also investing significantly in scientific research to develop new tools, build understanding of myrtle rust and explore possible long-term management options with a $3.7 million programme of research. An additional $5 million funding increase from the Strategic Science Investment Fund will build on work already being done by Government agencies, Maori, councils, and research providers over the next three years,” Mr Sanson says. In the meantime, it is important to understand where the rust has spread to, what plants it is affecting (especially new ones) and where it is active. DOC’s project manager for myrtle rust, Dr Fiona Thomson, says that a large programme of seed collection is underway to safeguard native myrtle species from extinction. “Everyone has an important role to play in biosecurity. The more eyes looking out for myrtle rust means the better we can monitor this disease and protect our precious myrtles.”

Survey celebrates two decades This year, Survey Gisborne Limited, a professional surveying company, is celebrating 20 years since it was first established in March 1999. Kevin Taylor, as the principal surveyor has been involved with surveying in excess of 40 years, and more than 30 years in the Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay region. Kevin is a professional licensed cadastral surveyor, and as such, he can undertake surveys relating to land. Such surveys relate to the subdivision of properties, boundary adjustment surveys and legal boundary redefinitions. These and other land surveying services are provided not just in urban areas, but also in the rural, agriculture and horticulture sectors. Usually, for subdivisions, resource consent must initially be obtained from the local territorial authority, in accordance with the Resource Management Act 1991. Depending on the task in hand, resource consent applications are usually treated as a controlled activity. However, such applications may need to escalate to restricted discretionary or discretionary status. Survey Gisborne Limited have the expertise to prepare applications, which involves providing assessments on the environmental effects, addressing any flood hazard areas, and complying with national environmental standards involving land stability and potential soil contamination. In some instances, other suitably qualified professionals are required to provide assessments in their respective field of expertise.

In the horticulture sector, Survey Gisborne Limited has also been actively involved with the setting out of various types of orchards and kiwifruit blocks, particularly in relation to legal boundaries and other topographic constraints, using the company’s up-to-date and survey accurate GPS equipment. Such equipment needs to be used correctly and calibrated regularly. Survey Gisborne Limited can also undertake farming mapping. In the past, these have been prepared on large aerial photograph overlays, but these can now be produced in a digital form that can be incorporated in the various computer software utilised by rural landowners. A word of advice. The legal boundaries depicted on the local territorial authority’s GIS system and Google Maps are generally indicative only and therefore should not be relied on
