Deer Industry New Zealand mar keting manager Rhys Griffiths says the companies are collaborating to get the critical mass needed to make an impact. In all other respects, they will continue to compete vigorously with each other for sales and farmer supply. “Deer velvet and red ginseng, two of the two most highly-prized ingredients in traditional oriental medicine, have in recent years enjoyed an explosion in demand from South Korea for use in branded natural health products to combat fatigue and boost immunity,” says Mr Griffiths. “The aim of the coalition is to replicate this phenomenon in China, where locally produced and imported velvet is still mainly used in traditional medicines. Removing soil, silt and gravel has been banned and can no longer be removed from the Tukituki and Waipawa Rivers to prevent the spread of the plant pest Chilean needle grass. “Chilean needle grass has been found on the Tukituki River from where it meets with the Waipawa River to the river mouth, and on the Waipawa River below Stockade Road,” says Hawke’s Bay Regional Council team leader Pest Plants, Alice McNatty. “No amount of gravel or silt can be removed from this area for any reason unless you have an exemption under the Biosecurity Act. Chilean needle grass is a harmful pest and we need cooperation from the public to make sure we prevent it from spreading. “Chilean needle grass is a pest plant in the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council Pest Management Plan and can have a severe impact on farm production and animal welfare. “The seed is sharp, and spreads by attaching itself to anything that brushes past the plant. Animals, people, vehicles, machinery and equipment, soil, silt, gravel and contaminated feed can all move Chilean needle grass seed.” Regional Council Schemes team leader Ant Rewcastle says consented gravel extraction has stopped for the time being where the area is infested. “We acknowledge this has caused significant disruption to contractors, business plans and specific projects

at a busy time, and we appreciate the cooperation of all those affected as we work through solutions.

“We will be working with gravel extractors and biosecurity specialists to develop a protocol that would allow gravel extraction to resume under strict conditions. These could look like specific extraction processes, such as cleaning machinery, notifying and recording recipients, and limiting use to activities that minimise the spread, such as concrete or foundation material.”

The regional council advises that care should be taken when visiting the Tukituki River during the seeding time of Chilean needle grass, between late October and February.

Although the regional council and landowners undertake control of Chilean needle grass during this time, it’s important to check clothing, footwear, vehicles, dogs and horses to ensure no seed has attached that could be taken back to your property.

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

Farming with many talents by Ann van Engelen Tania Cresswell manages her parents’ 55-hectare dairy farm, has artificially inseminated more than 25,000 dairy cows and is often seen on the car-racing circuit. PART TWO

“I

am the third generation from my family to farm the property. We source our genetics from LIC’s premier sires Holstein Friesian bull team during mating,” says Tania. “We have had some really good daughters from Fairmont Mint-Edition, San Ray FM Beamer-ET S2F and Morrows Super Hero-ET S2F. We have also had one of our bulls, 2011-born Whariti EO Hillbury S3F, make the LIC bull team. He sired 2,188 daughters in 664 herds and was the great-grandson of 2000-born cow, Heidi, who was the second calf I had as a pet as a child.

“Heidi, who was unregistered, lived until she was 18 years old and had nine daughters. I am still milking some of her descendants. We like a sound, reliable cow that can handle the hills and gets in calf every year — the cows who reach the age of 10 or 12 and have just got on with the job and not had any issues. “I also used sexed semen last spring for two ageing pets who had only ever produced one daughter each. One is 12 and the other is 13 years old. They were mated to sexed San Ray FM Beamer-ET S2F and Hallville FM Presley S3F. Fingers crossed for two heifers this spring. “We usually rear about 20 bull calves and sell them weaned. That pays for As farm manager on her parents farm Tania has a herd of Holstein Friesians and Jersey cows

the milk powder to rear all our calves, including the replacement heifers. I also have my Jersey heifers. They stick to me like glue and are very friendly, inquisitive and intelligent. “With the drought, the Jerseys did very well on once-a-day milking, they were dripping milk. They didn’t dry themselves off and got on with it. They looked after themselves and competed with the big cows for the most part.” Tania is often found in the front seat of a rally car on gravel roads, racing at speeds of more than 200km/h. “I am a co-driver for Ashburton drystock farmer Wayne Muckle in the New Zealand Rally Championship. We used to have a hill climb on the public road that goes past our support block. I would go and watch, and thought it looked fun,” she said. “One year I was able to go for a ride in one of the cars and as they say, the rest is history. I am a navigator and an extra set of eyes for Wayne. It is a pretty crucial role. The car is a Mitsubishi Evo 3, which is fitted with a roll cage and other safety features and can reach speeds of up to 230km/h. “I have been doing that for around 15 years and also jump in with other people who need a co-driver. “I organise where we have to be for each rally. I go over the course, analyse video footage and check our pace notes, which I read while we are racing. I tell the driver what is ahead, where to go and make sure he listens. “If you get it wrong things can go very wrong. Last year we ended up upside down on the opposite side of the road.

5

Tania Cresswell has been a co-driver on the car-racing circuit for more than 15 years, navigating for various drivers

That is why I prefer to stick to being a co-driver. It is a cheap way to enjoy the sport. I don’t have to pay for the car, or the repair bill. “My parents are pleased I found something that keeps me happy and I get a break off farm. I have met some neat people along the way. A lot have their own businesses so you get good conversation. We have won a few rounds in various races and placed eighth overall in the top ten in the Group A

class South Canterbury Rally. Half of the co-drivers were women, which was cool. “There is still a positive future for farming, you just have to find how to make it work for you. Don’t be hostile toward change. “If you are cooperative you get a lot further. It is easier to work with people than work against them. ”We have had a milk monitoring system put in, and now I can look up the milk temperature on my phone. The

app alerts you if anything is wrong and you don’t want to find your milk hasn’t chilled for a few hours, it tells you in 10 minutes if something is wrong. I think you have to embrace technology in the future because you will get left behind. “AI is a really fulfilling job and you see other people’s farming systems and their ideas. “You pickup and learn from people and if someone is having a bad season you can help encourage them.” 1 11

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

by Ann van Engelen Natalie and Zolton Tolchard have turned their one-and-a-half-acre property in Clive from bare land into a thriving dahlia field growing a wide variety of colours and types.

“H

awke’s Bay is where the good things in life are for us. We have been here for three years now and considered growing various crops including macadamias, feijoas and mandarin,” says Natalie. “We found with some choices our finances would be tied up for quite a long time. After researching flowers, I found the payback is quite quick. Although they are very perishable, dahlias can be marketed as tubers, seed and cutting forms. “We have done a wide variety of things throughout our lives. Let’s just give it a go, is our attitude and we decided to add gardening to the list and chose the German hugelkultur style of garden beds. With hugelkultur, a trench is dug and backfilled with logs, wood and green

9

and brown material like you would for a compost heap. They help reduce water consumption and increase the heat of the bed, which dahlias love. “Over winter the ground settles, and tubers can be planted out. We started with six beds, and the bare field sang during the summer period with wildlife visiting the riotous, coloured dahlia. We now have 12 beds and are adding another six this winter. “Living in Clive, we are close to the Te Mata hills, and the Kaweka ranges protect us from the Tasman precipitation. This makes it ideal for growing although I am sure dahlias would thrive in any conditions they are grown in. “We have strived to reduce our carbon footprint by recycling things like damaged bread crates. order tubers or cuttings online from The Dahlia Field, they will often arrive in recycled material such as the rolls carpet comes on for protection.” Tubers are picked over one by one, to ensure diseases are not present. “We do this on lifting at the end of the season as well. We wouldn’t want to pass on diseases, so we are very cautious and sterilise any equipment we use when taking cuttings also to reduce transmitting bacteria. “It took us two years to discover the magnificence of dahlias. We spent six months planning, raising and irrigating our beds and two months of purchasing startup stock. We spent a day planting our first 300 tubers, and our old caravan became a dahlia retirement village to keep them toasty warm over winter. “We dig our tubers up around June, but you can dig them before the frosts start. If you live where frost and water

are not a large concern, a thick mulch of grass clippings, cardboard, hay or straw can be used if you want to leave the tubers in the ground. “Dahlias are very easy to grow. We plant them after the last frost in the year, generally after Labour Day in October depending on where you live in New Zealand. “I dig the hole and dress it with fertiliser with low nitrogen but high in potassium to produce great blooms. When you see them looking a bit lacklustre that is when they are wanting another feed. “I don’t water them until the leaves begin to develop as the tuber contains what the plant needs to grow. They are susceptible to rot if watered too early. I lightly water as it is growing and producing roots. “The leaf formation is the key sign that roots are growing. As they gather

height watering is increased to twice a week and at the height of the season three to four times a week. “I use white Hortnova netting to support the stalks as some grow to two metres tall. You can also use three stakes tying twine around the stalks and stakes to support the plant also called corralling. “I regularly deadhead those that have bloomed as they produce more blooms as they are cut. “You can encourage long stems by cutting off the side shoots and leaving one to grow. We are looking forward to documenting our progress to share our journey on our website and Facebook page. “Dahlia growing is very addictive, and the future looks great. ADVERTORIAL

Top line-up for farming showcase The countdown is on to one of the highlights of the wider region’s agriculture calendar, the 2021 East Coast Farming Expo for sheep and beef farmers. The expo runs during Wednesday, February 24 and Thursday, February 25 at the Wairoa A&P Showgrounds to give farmers and visitors the chance to chat. Once again, event manager Sue Wilson has brought together a stellar collection of exhibitors and speakers for the two-day expo, giving farmers from the East Coast and Hawke’s Bay the chance to meet face-to-face with industry leaders. “This is for all sheep and beef farming businesses,” says Mrs Wilson. “Whether you be on extensive hill country or intensive flat operations — it is all about farming smarter.” The events on the card in 2020 will again be back in 2021. The Rural Women New Zealand agri-women’s luncheon was a huge hit. With Will to Live founder Elle Perriam confirmed this year, Mrs Wilson is expecting a big turnout. Will to Live, a non-profit mental health organisation focussed on helping young

rural people, was established after Ms Perriam’s 21-year-old farmer partner lost his life to suicide in 2017. Serial technology entrepreneur Melissa Clark-Reynolds is the first of another exciting line-up of keynote speakers for the seminars, with more to be announced in the coming weeks. The outdoor demonstrations include top dog trialist Lloyd Smith, from Pup Pen to Paddock, who is celebrated for his training system used by many shepherds and farmers. “The showgrounds are the perfect venue for the expo, sitting bang in the centre of our target audience area which covers from Central Hawke’s Bay all the way up the East Cape. It is a great event, designed for farmers without the worry of kids and townies and completely focussed on helping farmers see what is out there to help their farming operations.” For more information, visit eastcoastexpo.co.nz.

Encouraging youth careers

JANuARY 2021

11

The importance of primary industries has been recognised with a new sector to be included in the 2021 Ford Ranger New Zealand Rural Games to help young people into rural careers. The Rural Games will now include Westpac Agri Futures in association with Property Brokers. This is to be held on Friday, March 12 in Palmerston North. “Agri Futures is all about encouraging the next generation into agriculture sector careers,” said Westpac New Zealand general manager Institutional and Business Banking, Simon Power. “The demand for staff across rural New Zealand has only grown since Covid-19, and Westpac understands the need to support efforts to encourage more Kiwis to enter the rural workforce. “There is a wide breadth of career opportunities available right now. From dairy, horticulture, fencing, shepherding and shearing, through to arboriculture, apiculture, finance, science and increasingly Agri-tech, which is particularly strong in the Manawatu.” Property Brokers chairman Tim Mordaunt said the rural economy is more buoyant now than it has been in decades. “For those wanting to experience the ultimate Kiwi outdoor lifestyle, a career in the rural sector is unbeatable.” New Zealand Rural Games Trust chair, Margaret Kouvelis MNZM, said Westpac

Agri Futures would have a heavy focus on industry bodies and those institutions that specialise in preparing youth for rural careers. “In recent decades there has been a strong focus on careers in cities, and this has been to the detriment of rural New Zealand. “It is time we brought some balance to the conversation, so young people understand the well-paid opportunities that are there right now.” Westpac Agri Futures will run from 9am to 1pm on March 12 2021 in The Square, Palmerston North. The event runs alongside the Allflex Clash of the Colleges in association with Inspire Net and Talent Central. Teams from 15 secondary schools across the mid and lower North Island compete in rural tasks to take home bragging rights in the juniors’ and seniors’ sections. Alongside that is the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Ladies and Rookie Championships and the Rural Golf Challenge. Polaris and Zero join forces

by Andy Bryenton

Polaris, makers of the popular Ranger, RZR, General and Sportsman off-road vehicles, has partnered up with electric powertrain innovators Zero Motorcycles, adding an injection of Silicon Valley technology to its business model. Polaris says that this 10-year partnership in off-road vehicles and snowmobiles is a cornerstone component of ‘rEV’d up’, its long-term strategy to position the company as the leader in off-road electric vehicles. While Tesla, the big name in on-road electric cars, is flying high with wild stock prices and rumours that they may buy out one of the big four automakers entirely, Polaris seems to be on track to replicate this feat for the world of off-roaders. “Thanks to advancements in power, pricing and performance over the last several years, and with customer interest surging, now is the right time for Polaris, with Zero Motorcycles as a key strategic partner, to aggressively accelerate our position in the development of off-road electric vehicles,” said Scott Wine, chairman and CEO of Polaris. Wine is not fooling around; models developed jointly by the two firms will see the light of day by the end of this year, and an EV version of every Polaris product, from the Baja desert-beating RZR to the snow, by 2025. “Zero Motorcycles’ mastery of the electric powertrain for powersports is unmatched in the market. We believe this transformative partnership will enable us to leapfrog technological hurdles around range and cost while

Polaris and Zero Motorcycles have joined forces to storm the off-road world, promising exciting new electric vehicles on sand, dirt, mud and snow

providing a tremendous speed-tomarket advantage. Leveraging the strengths of our teams, Polaris and Zero will collaborate to shape the future of powersports.” Zero Motorcycles CEO Sam Paschel is equally enthusiastic about combining his firm’s tech know-how with the manufacturing might of Polaris and its

global reach. With Polaris’ scale and broad product line-up, this strategic partnership will be the largest in Zero Motorcycles’ history. Under this 10-year exclusive agreement, Polaris will develop, manufacture and sell electrified ORVs and snowmobiles using Zero’s powertrain technology, hardware and

software. From the local perspective Alan Collins, Polaris managing director Australia and New Zealand, said: “This news is very exciting for our part of the world. “Our sales of the Ranger EV have grown year-on-year substantially proving the desire from our customers for this type of product.”

Silver lining on wheels

JANuARY 2021

15

by Andy Bryenton

The year 2020 may go down in history as one of the low points, alongside honourable mentions such as 1666 and 1918, but thanks to the relentless momentum and timescale of the auto industry, it was a good year for cars. Most new cars have a gestation spanning years of research, development and crash tests before they see the showroom. That’s why some models linger on with facelift after facelift until they can be wheeled right from the forecourt to a motor museum. A little something like a global viral outbreak did little to slow down the release of new models touting the latest technology. Neither did it slow down sales, which have been relatively buoyant in New Zealand. When it comes to the best of 2020, then, what was the top of the tree? It’s an offering from serial car of the year winners Mercedes Benz, that memorably pipped everyone else for the very first car of the year in 1886, by inventing the car before everyone else. This time, it’s their all-electric SUV, the EQC, which has beaten an admittedly much more challenging field to take top honours. The EQC, which is the subject of a current, somewhat confusing television ad campaign that also features the 1886 Benz-autowagen, is a huge departure for the company that created diesel and boasts several of the 20th century’s greatest cars and petrol engines in its gallery of hits. Contrast the EQC with the venerable, still-trendy G-Wagen, and you’ll find no

Mercedes EQC — the all-electric sports utility, which took out the top spot in New Zealand’s 2020 Car of the Year awards

5.5-litre V8 fettled by the boys at AMG. The key words used by Mercedes about the EQC are ‘near-silent’, ‘practical’ and ‘refined’, as befits a smooth and gadget-laden flagship sports utility for the urban cruise rather than military manoeuvres. The price at the pump is totally negated, with two asynchronous electric motors replacing the traditional

cylinders and pistons. The range is a handy 354 kilometres according to the United State’s EPA rating, though this traditionally grades lower than Kiwi road tests. That puts the EQC out of the shadow of range anxiety for most local users. Even the $142,900 price tag seems reasonable when weighed against the

other heavy hitters of the Mercedes range. With the world going electric, the stylishly appointed Benz was a clever choice for the car of the year. Still, most motorists will be focussed on what derives from its technology, as we collectively wait for EVs to rival oldfashioned internal combustion on initial investment cost.
