“Welcome to a year of new possibilities and new stories from the rural heartland of New Zealand,” says Fiona. She is back into the business of promoting local enterprise and entrepreneurship after a well-deserved Christmas break. “It is a year of opportunities for all of us. For myself, this means taking a break from working with you all due to maternity leave. So I’d like to take the time to thank all of my business contacts, advertisers and the wider Hawke’s Bay rural community for their support. “It’s been great working alongside you to grow local business, and I look forward to returning soon. While I’m away, be assured that you’ll be in good hands!

“We’re dedicated to getting your profile out to the rural heartland in 2022. At the same time, if you know of successes to be celebrated and individuals with a tale to tell, we’d also love to tell your stories in print. Know of a local farming legend or good sort? We’d love to talk to them and you. “If you know you should get your name out there, we can help get your message across. Print media remains the most trusted way to source information that’s important to the farming sector, and our aim is to help your business grow. “If you’re innovating, expanding, succeeding or doing something special, we should talk and make a plan to let the Hawke’s Bay farming community know about it.”

Summer food safety warning

3

JANUARY 2022

by Paul Campbell

Summertime is beach time and there is plenty of seaside access in the bay that also provides succulent seafood. New Zealand Food Safety is reminding consumers to thoroughly cook mussels following an increase in cases of Vibrio parahaemolyticus around the country this summer. Deputy director-general Vince Arbuckle says that this summer, there have been 31 confirmed cases with 10 people hospitalised with the illness from around the country. Evidence suggests a change in water temperature and conditions may make live mussels more susceptible to the bacteria. “As mussel harvesting is a favourite summer pastime of many New Zealanders and is sold live and raw in many New Zealand supermarkets, we advise consumers to cook mussels thoroughly before consumption to avoid getting sick. “We have been working with the major supermarket chains to ensure that point-of-sale signage to cook mussels is available for consumers. “People with low immunity, pregnant or elderly, should always avoid eating raw or undercooked shellfish as the illness can be more severe,” said Mr Arbuckle. New Zealand Food Safety advises consumers to follow simple food safety

guidance to avoid contracting Vibrio parahaemolyticus by following some simple rules. Always wash your hands and kitchen utensils after handling raw seafood and before using other utensils or handling other foods. It will prevent the bacteria from spreading in your kitchen. Cook mussels until steaming hot. Don’t eat them raw or lightly cooked as this won’t kill the Vibrio bacteria. One good way to know mussels are fully cooked is that their shells pop open when boiled or steamed, and the mussel inside is firm to the touch. Refrigerate shellfish as soon as possible after harvesting from the beach or purchasing from the supermarket. “New Zealand Food Safety is working together with public health units and the seafood industry to ensure appropriate public health measures are taken. However, consumers can minimise risks by cooking their shellfish thoroughly,” said Mr Arbuckle. If you get sick after eating shellfish, phone Healthline for advice on 0800 611 116 or seek medical attention immediately. If possible, store and refrigerate any leftover shellfish for testing.

Vince Arbuckle — Food Safety deputy director-general

FARMERS

‘IN FOR A TREAT’ Meet with East Coast Farming Expo event manager Sue Wilson, and you quickly learn there are plenty of reasons to fill two days at the fast-approaching annual get-together at the East Coast Farming Expo in Wairoa, on February 23 and 24.

K

eynote speakers bring some of New Zealand’s brightest, including Sir Ian Taylor, serial entrepreneur Logan Williams and the inspiring Shaz Dagg, to seminars on stock handling tools, dog training, animal health and more, at the Wairoa A&P Showgrounds hosted event.

Then there are the trade exhibitors, which give expo-goers a chance to talk oneon-one with the manufacturers, inventors and retailers of many great products. “With both our audience and those exhibiting at the expo being so tailored, it means there’s no tyre kicking here,” says Mrs Wilson. “These are the products and people our sheep and beef farmers want to speak to, and the feeling is reciprocated by those selling trades and services.”

Alan Irwin will be back along with Guy Peacock to demonstrate training techniques for working dogs

Guest speaker Shaz Dagg made history as the first female amputee to complete the Coast to Coast multi-sport event. A freak accident while working on a goat milking farm changed her life, but New Zealand’s first elite para-triathlete sees a silver lining in everything. Entrepreneur Logan Williams is on a mission to save the strong wool industry.

He’s young, vibrant and has a track record that throws shade on most who have spent many more decades on the planet than he. “Our talent for the 2022 expo across the board is just so exciting,” says Mrs Wilson. “With the cancellation of the A&P shows this season, the expo is the only agricultural event on the east coast for

the next little while. We are all looking forward to it.” For information and tickets — visit eastcoastexpo.co.nz.

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

A HISTORIC

AFFAIR BY ANN VAN ENGELEN Matthew Bonnett has seen the extraordinary and immersive Art Deco Festival Napier grow into one of the greatest dress-up shindigs in New Zealand, if not the world.

“T

he festival brings to life a modern art and design movement brimming with energy, optimism and all that jazz of the 1920s, 30s and 40s,” says Art Deco Trust membership coordinator Matthew Bonnett. “I attended my first event around 20 years ago from Auckland and fell in love with the history of the town. I was working in e-commerce and attended every festival from then on. “The festival became an escapism from Auckland annually, and 10 years later, I didn’t go home.” Matthew had been involved with various heritage organisations during the years. “I have helped with many preservation projects around the country and heritage

was certainly something I worked to support. I looked back and regretted it wasn’t a career. “I moved here and became the membership coordinator at the Art Deco Trust, which I am absolutely passionate about. I have since seen the city flourish in many ways. “The city has a real positive vibe, and there are so many options, including business opportunities, which is great to see. It certainly shows when you travel outside the area and return. “Hawke’s Bay is a really special place — the whole region is blessed with an abundance of everything. Some regions are fortunate for their beauty, entertainment or sea views, but Hawke’s Bay has all of that.

“Over five days, every February, this Art Deco Festival takes over the streets, restaurants, cafes, bars, theatres, galleries, music venues of Hawke’s Bay. It is a summer festival like no other. “It is a celebration of the resilience and spirit of the people of Hawke’s

Bay. Ninety-one years ago, they courageously rebuilt their town and their lives following the catastrophic 1931 earthquake. Since then, the vibrant, creative east coast community Hawke’s Bay has grown into what it is today.

Feathers are a must for the show girls and those enjoying a cup of tea

“The story of how Napier rose out of the rubble and ashes of the 1931 earthquake is just the compelling opening chapter of a bigger and equally intriguing story of the Napier people. “New Zealanders, and many worldwide, fell in love with treasures that had been hiding in plain sight for 50 years. There are stories of those who created the buildings, stories of battles lost and won in the fight to preserve the historic precinct, and stories of those buildings brought back from the brink. “In 1985, a group of passionate heritage advocates organised the premiere of Peter Wells’ television film Newest City On The Globe. On a fine winter

Sunday afternoon, a crowd of 1,100 people turned out to walk the streets of Napier and view its buildings before watching the film in a 340-seat theatre. “The public’s enthusiasm encouraged those involved to continue working for the preservation, enhancement and promotion of Napier’s unique architecture that was constructed after the earthquake of 1931, and the Art Deco Trust was born. “In 1992, with support from the Napier City Council, the trust became a full-time operation with a salaried staff member and its own premises. It has since flourished and now operates a range of heritage focussed activities from the Art Deco Centre at 7 Tennyson Street, Napier.”

7

JANUARY 2022

When Matthew Bonnett attended his first Art Deco Festival in Napier he fell in love with the event

The Art Deco Centre is one example of the unique architecture and design that attracts visitors to Napier

The activities include guided walks, vintage car tours, the Winter Deco Weekend, and the unmissable Art Deco Festival Napier every February. “Whether you are an avid Art Deco enthusiast, love the romance of a bygone era and a good dress up, or simply want to kick back and have a great time, how you Deco is up to you. One thing is guaranteed — you will be back for more the next year. “The free events add to the vibrancy of the town, which has a real immersive atmosphere with city and country people. Visitors from places like Auckland to the farming community join in the

celebration and play their part, especially at the festivals. “The excitement spreads into the restaurants, shops and streets. I am obsessed with showing people what we have here. It is unlike anything I have seen anywhere in the world. “Fascinatingly, I only recently learned that my great-great-great-great-grandfather was the first pākehā born here in Hawke’s Bay. A ship’s captain’s wife gave birth somewhere near Clive around the 1840s. “Knowing I have roots here now has given me a real sense of belonging to the place I call home.”

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

CREATING THEIR

DREAMS BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

Amanda Wilson and Tim Sloss have turned their three-year-old son Cooper’s desire to dress like his dad on the farm into a reality.

“I

grew up in Southland on a sheep and deer farm that was in my family for 64 years. Tim grew up on a North Canterbury sheep farm,” says Amanda. “When I met Tim, he was dairy farming, and we later decided to go contract milking. We have 800 dairy cows and also lease a sheep farm running 2,000 stock units, some of which are calves we are rearing and the rest being sheep. “Cooper is quite a farm boy and wants to dress like his dad, and I was struggling to find quality clothing for him. He was going up in sizes rapidly, so I decided to make my own as there was nothing really around for children in moleskin pants. “Then, I thought other children may like to dress like dad too in moleskins, nice shirts and workwear. I worked alongside a manufacturer on my designs and made a massive plunge for a bulk order.” Amanda called her range Dusty Shepherd Clothing.

“There are multiple reasons I came up with Dusty Shepherd. The shepherd is what sheep farmers are called worldwide, and I wanted to represent all farmers in New Zealand. We are farmers caring for the land and animals. “Dusty to me represents dusty days, dusty yards, hard-working and tired farmers. For youth, it could be the day after a big night and they feel pretty dusty. “The dog is in my logo because he is your loyal working companion that helps with the day-to-day jobs. “The clothes are timeless pieces, made to be hard-wearing, using good-quality cotton so you can pass along to other children. Cotton makes the clothes good for both summer and winter. “Cooper is fair-skinned, and I know he won’t get sunburnt or overheat in his work shirts as the material breathes and the long sleeves protect him.

Cooper still uses the crooks Amanda’s grandfather made from mānuka especially for the photo shoot to add character

“The moleskin pants are unisex and look just like dad’s. They have a hidden elastic to tighten the waist if you need

and they look tidy for special occasions. Girls love them too, especially for horse riding.”

Cooper and other farming children are enjoying being able to dress like their mum or dad on-farm

Amanda added a frill on the shirt bodice and cuffs for girls. “The girl’s shirt turned out really pretty, and I loved it so much I made one for myself. I used a gingham print for girl’s shirts and dresses as it is timeless. They are really popular. “I found beautiful colours for my classic rugby jersey. Made from 100 per cent cotton, they have the classic white collar and rubber buttons. I added an Italian leather belt with a solid brass buckle for children to create the finishing touch to their outfit.

“I think my range makes the day on the farm that much more fun. I had the help of two outstanding photographers, Rory Hamilton from HC Photography and Kerri Back Photography. I am so grateful to them as I couldn’t capture my vision as they have. “My grandad made the shepherd crooks for my photos out of mānuka, and the shepherd’s whistles came from a lady who sells them on behalf of her father. Cooper is really getting the knack of using his whistle.

“It is so nice to use so many New Zealand people to help get my idea off the ground. Tim is my main supporter and thinks it is awesome Cooper dresses like dad. Every day Cooper requests to wear his Dusty Shepherd clothing. “My favourite thing about creating my brand is that the children look so smart in their clothes. “I have a wee sleepout I work from, and I am so pleased I took the risk. It is still hard as I rely on social media to get it out there because we live rurally. I am

always grateful when people share photos of their family in my designs on my Dusty Shepherd Clothing Facebook page. “My dad taught me everything I know about sheep, and when I was younger, I worked on farms in Australia. Producing a range of hardwearing adaptable clothing for children and adults that love getting out there in all environments adds to my experiences. “Being in the farming world is the best place to be. I can’t imagine myself being anywhere else.”

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

by Andy Bryenton

Command from the front

Can-Am has started 2022 the way they mean to go on, revealing a range for the new year that emphasises power as well as utility and fun. The Maverick sits at the top of the range for off-road adventure, while the redoubtable Defender remains the pick of the bunch for heavy-duty off-road work. However, sitting at the crossroads of these models is the revitalised Can-Am Commander. This machine has undergone some subtle cosmetic changes during the years to become an amalgam of both work and play capabilities. This year marks the tenth birthday of the Commander, and it’s good to see that substantial evolution has come from Can-Am listening to customer feedback. It means a lot of upgrades during the life of the Commander. It shows through in this year’s more refined, quieter CVT gearbox, more powerful, low-mounted 700cc or 1000cc engine choices, and a large list of add-ons to customise individual vehicles for work, hunting, trail riding or the beach. Work is still very much on the agenda, though the Commander’s new look hints broadly at the rakish lines of the Maverick. Pointedly, the Commander boasts the biggest tipping cargo tray in its class and the ability to haul more than 900 kilograms, both key indicators of good on-farm versatility. Ten years of advancements have also been felt in the suspension and handling department, where ground clearance and

A decade of small changes add up to a winning combo for the Can-Am Commander

grip have been put to the fore. The 2022 Commander comes with double A-arm front suspension and torsional trailing arm suspension to the rear, both equipped with sway bars for stability. That doesn’t just mean fewer lumps and bumps through the bucket seats. It also means better grip and more rubber on the ground in tight spots, lending the driver confidence.

Being a crossroads model, the 2022 Commander is also highly customisable, with boxes, racks, clips and tie-downs all over, and a more powerful magneto to generate the voltage for spotlights, light bars, winches and even stereo systems. How far you go with making the Commander your own depends on how far you want to go off the beaten track.

1

Different builds can make this a hunter’s companion, an angler’s best friend or simply a rugged and dependable runabout for farm chores. Ten years on, the Commander is going strong and deserves to be on your list if you’re looking for a new multipurpose off-road machine in 2022.

Truck drivers needed

The trucking industry is calling for all hands to the pump as New Zealand faces an indefinite length of time in the red traffic light, which will strain the supply chain. “We know there are New Zealanders out there with a class two, four or five licence suitable for a heavy vehicle, who are not currently working as truck drivers,” says Ia Ara Aotearoa Transporting New Zealand chief executive Nick Leggett. “We are asking them to consider making themselves available to drive a truck in the weeks and months ahead as we face the wave of Omicron. “Looking across the Tasman to Australia and further afield to the United States and United Kingdom, we know that Omicron can decimate the driver workforce, through both drivers getting the virus and having to isolate because they have been exposed to it. “We are already seeing the anticipation of this disruption to the supply chain. Ironically, the disruption has started prematurely with people panic buying goods and stockpiling. “Thinking ahead, we are appealing to people who have a licence and relevant experience to let us know. We can link you with transport companies in your area to try and fill some of the gaps if and when the supply chain flow becomes critical. “We are an industry that was short of drivers, pre-Covid-19, and that has only intensified as our border has been closed for years, and labour pressures have increased.

“Thinking ahead, we are appealing to people who have a licence and relevant experience to let us know. We can link you with transport companies in your area.” “It is estimated that one in four transport companies have vehicles parked up due to driver shortage. Omicron is likely to compound that issue. We might only be talking about a shift or two, but every licence holder who is willing and able to lend a hand will help keep New Zealand’s supply chain running. “It is vital that food and medical supplies continue to move at this time. Someone putting their hand up for a shift could help ensure the deliveries keep rolling.” Mr Leggett says Transporting New Zealand will be working with the government to ensure anyone on Jobseeker Support who meets the appropriate licence requirements can be made aware they may be needed. Any drivers willing to work through this time can register their interest to Transporting New Zealand via email at admin@transporting.nz. They will be subject to the normal screening, and there are no guarantees of work.

Ford’s electric revolution

JANUARY 2022

13

The new 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV is expected for sale in New Zealand this year, in a bold new move for Ford. Not only is it an SUV, but it is an electric vehicle, showing that the company is moving with current issues and trends. The use of electric vehicles has become more popular with current issues surrounding climate change and the rising cost of fuel. The New Zealand government has a clean car discount for buying a hybrid electric or fully electric vehicle to achieve a carbon neutral country. The first electric Ford was released in 2021 as the 2020 Mach-E, and it’s a long way from its muscle car roots. This year, Ford’s Mustang Mach-E SUV is finally coming to New Zealand shores. The five-seater SUV can be bought in either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The GT performance models can go from zero to 100km/h in 3.5 seconds with a total of 480 horsepower. Although reviews vary by personal opinion, the general consensus is that the Mach-E is fast, with most drivers enjoying the infotainment system. It also has notably more space than a regular Mustang coupe and could easily fit a family. At first, the idea of Mustang producing an electric vehicle that was an SUV created feelings of uncertainty for longtime fans. However, it was an unexpected surprise, that both reviews and sales were in favour of this bold move, which showed that Ford was moving into the popular SUV space and growing interest in electric vehicles.

Serial number one Mustang 1964 starred in the New York World Fair of that year, it was accidentally sold to Captain Stanley Tucker before being traded back to Ford in 1966

The Ford Mustang has evolved vastly throughout the decades. Starting with the sale of the Ford Mustang in 1964, to the first Mach 1 Mustang in 1969, and the 1971 Mach 1’s appearance in Diamonds Are Forever, the cars have achieved great popularity. The Mach 1 continued until 1978, before being

reintroduced in 2003, then reappearing again last year in 2021. The origins of the electric vehicle give credit to Robert Anderson, who produced the first primitive electric car in 1832; more recently, Tesla has helped to push electric vehicle technology. The history of the automotive industry has seen our usual petrol and diesel

vehicles evolve past steam vehicles, and now the transformation of electric vehicles is here. Current times and issues have set the stage for electric vehicles, and it is exciting to be in an era where massive companies, such as Ford, are producing evolved forms of transport, no matter what badge is on the front.

Chicken and Leek Pie

by Deb Wright

I know it’s too hot for pies at the moment, but this is just one of those recipes you can have at any time of the year with a salad in the summer or mashed potatoes and broccoli at the cooler times of the year. you want the liquid to reduce right down as this will be the filling of your pie. If it’s too liquidy, you end up with pie soup! You will think there is not enough liquid, but as the zucchini cooks, it releases moisture too, so try to wait before you add extra stock. Once the chicken and veggie mix has reduced down, turn off the heat and stir through the mustard and sour cream or cream. Grease a pie dish and transfer the chicken and veggie mix into the pie dish. Top with puff pastry. Pierce the pastry with a knife to create a few holes for steam to escape, and if you have the inclination, brush the pastry with a little melted butter. Bake at 200 degrees Celsius for 15 minutes or until the pastry is golden. This pie is very versatile. You can add a ½ cup of mushrooms and two rashers of bacon and omit the carrot and zucchini if you want. You may need to add a little flour if the liquid is too runny.

Ingredients • 1–2 tbsp olive oil • 1 large leek • 1 medium carrot • 500g chicken breast • 2 medium zucchini • 300ml chicken stock • 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard (optional) • 2 tbsp sour cream or cream • 1 sheet puff pastry Method Heat the oil in a frypan over a medium heat. Slice the leek thinly and fry the leek in the oil. Finely dice the carrot and add to the pan. Continue to sauté the leek and carrot until both are tender and fragrant (approx five minutes). Dice the chicken. Add this to the frypan and seal the chicken; it does not need to be browned all over, it will cook in the stock — which you add next. Add the stock, grate the zucchini and add this too. Bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer. Leave the mix to simmer for 20–30 mins;

ROSES WITH

HERITAGE Since the advent of the garden in ancient times, the rose has been an integral, fragrant and timeless standout.

BY LIZ CLARK

I

n recent years a resurgence of interest in growing roses in home gardens has had nurseries developing new cultivars for their customers. However, modern varieties aside, heritage roses have also made a strong comeback. They’re found along roadsides, old gardens and around heritage properties thriving on neglect. Heritage roses come in a multitude of forms, colours and cultivars, and many are available in New Zealand. They’re worthy additions to any garden, even in a large pot — a statement is made. One of this writer’s favourites is the Gallica rose. Initially from central and southern Europe and eastward to Turkey and the Caucasus, this subspecies has been cultivated for more than 2,000 years. Gallica roses have relatively few thorns and can be propagated from suckers. The plants thrive in several soil types, including clay, as long as it’s free-draining.

Bloom colouration ranges from white to pink and deep purple. It flowers only once each season. Cultivars available include Charles de Mills, Duchesse de Montebello, Tuscany Superb and Beau Narcisse. One of the hardiest of the rose family, the rugosa rose has a high resistance to black spot and other common diseases affecting modern cultivars. The species originated from Asia, mainly China, Japan and coastal Siberia. This rose is ideal for mass planting for hedging or as a stand-alone shrub in coastal areas. They are salt and wind tolerant, easily propagated from suckers and fragrant. Bloom colourations range from dark pink to white, and the hips are edible. Cultivars include Alexander Mackenzie, America, Campbell, Eugenie Ombler’s Rose and Frimbriata. A climbing heritage rose is a musthave for fences, walls or a decorative

arbour. The thornless Lady Banks’ Rose Lutea has a mass of soft, yellow blooms that flower throughout the growing season. Another variety to consider is Black Boy (1919) a thornless rose with deep red, almost black blooms. A vigorous grower, it will provide colour and fragrance for months. Also, consider

Chaplin’s Pink Climber, Daily Dream and Leonide. While we’ve only covered a small portion of the heritage rose range, others include damask, moss, rambler, floribunda and many more. For more information about heritage roses, visit the Heritage Roses New Zealand website heritageroses.org.nz.

In the past, naturally occurring pollinators were abundant. However, over time with the extensive use of broad-spectrum insecticides, along with the decrease of the wild honeybee population, the situation has changed. Growers are now seeing the many benefits of using bumblebees to achieve essential pollination. Bumblebees have proven to be exceptionally effective pollinator of crops in greenhouses and in open air situations, including the home garden. We have different hives available to suit your needs! The hive is fully self-contained and requires no maintenance. It is easy to use and comes complete with instructions. Contact us to find out what we can do for you!
