A New Origin concept store strongly promotes health foods made from New Zealand deer velvet in an upmarket mall in Seoul, South Korea

“Ten years ago this product category didn’t even exist,” says Deer Industry NZ Asia manager, Rhys Griffiths. “In the past six months, 23 new velvet-based healthy food products have been launched in Korea — the majority of them using New Zealand velvet. “Yuhan Pharmaceuticals, which signed a memorandum of understanding with DINZ last year, is now a major player in this market. Their impressive New Origin concept store/cafe in Seoul features recently launched products that contain New Zealand velvet and deer farm imagery on large video screens inside.” Mr Griffiths says the Chinese market for velvet has yet to make the leap into consumer-ready healthy food products, but many manufacturers are aware of what has happened in Korea and believe it can be repeated in China. “The main barrier is a lack of confidence in the path to market for consumer products based on New Zealand velvet. These products cost millions of dollars to develop and market, so manufacturers need to be convinced they are not infringing a rule or regulation along the way.” To provide confidence to potential customers, DINZ is working with some exporters and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise to commission a report by a respected Chinese regulatory expert on

the pathway to market. This report will be provided to key manufacturers when it has been completed. “In the last three years to improve consumer safety, there has been a major tightening of the rules and regulations governing food and traditional medicines in China. This has included tighter standards for overseas suppliers. As a result, New Zealand velvet producers have had to create clean areas in their deer sheds and to meet tougher cold chain requirements. In China, velvet processors have had to make similar upgrades — some have built completely new factories.” A major new Chinese super ministry is being established that is expected to have regulatory oversight of the trade in traditional medicines and manufactured health foods. Until the new regulatory regime is operating, manufacturers will be uncertain about the rules that will apply to their operations. “A further unsettling factor has been the recent clamp down on importers for importing illegal products and for evading customs duties. Some smaller velvet importers have been prosecuted,” he says. “Larger, reputable importers say this will be a good thing in the longrun for the reputation of imported velvet and particularly for New Zealand. It will tidy up the industry.”

Options to secure port

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has voted unanimously to consult with the Hawke’s Bay community later this year on options to fund the development of Napier Port. Council chair, Rex Graham, says the options seek to secure funding required for the port’s growth to support the region’s thriving economy, while reducing commercial risk and protecting overall community ownership of the port. Earlier this year, the council released a Capital Structure Review Panel report outlining a number of options on how best to secure the region’s economic and environmental future. “Hawke’s Bay’s economy is growing, and Napier Port needs to grow to support that. At the same time, we need to spread council’s investments and make them work hard to support council’s critical work for our region’s future. This is a significant decision for the community and council is united that doing nothing is no longer an option,” says Mr Graham. “Napier Port is associated with 27,000 full and part-time jobs across the region and underpins our exportdriven economy. Council is united that the community retains overall ownership of the port.” Exports through Napier Port will increase by approximately 50 per cent over the coming decade as the Hawke’s Bay economy continues to grow. The port is currently refining its capital requirements so it can continue to connect the region’s

cargo owners to global markets, accommodate larger vessels and manage increasing port congestion. 8 ATED Locally owned and operated, SEoRuRt of 10 The port currently makes U the Oxford Court Motel offers you affordable family friendly up 77 per cent of the accommodation. council’s income-generating For quick trip through, Family holiday, or a week long investments, which is business trip, you’ve come to the right place. HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

A MIXED FARMING

BY ANN VAN ENGELEN Soil consultant, Robbie Hill, is the third generation working on his parents’ 600 hectare property and rears 600 bull calves annually. PART ONE

T

he 26-year-old placed third in the Hawke’s Bay regional Young Farmers competition, in his second attempt at the regional final, and says he enjoys the challenges farming brings. “My main job is rearing the bull calves, and soil consulting is my other interest, as it is based on a biological approach. We get an understanding of what the farmer wants for their systems and send tests to America, and then we address any issues with the nutrients in the soil,” says Robbie. Robbie became a consultant because he believes there is a need for farmers to understand the importance of running their systems in a more biologically healthy way. “If the farm is a grass-based system or if they incorporate pasture, depending

on their rotation length, determines grass growth at different times of the year. The longer you can recover the ground means the more grass you can grow. In nature, a grass plant isn’t absolutely grazed continually. “We compare to the Serengeti Plains, where migratory animals constantly move to other pastures. Our rotational grazing system limits nature in that way, so we promote moving away from having stock constantly in your paddocks. You may need more fencing for rotation, but it is worth it. “My final pillar of consulting is microbiology — we know more about space than soil. The biology under the ground is the last frontier to be explored, and we have a lot to learn. There is a huge, symbiotic relationship between

biology and humans — we need a diverse range of soil biology to transfer into the plant roots because without good biology the plants can’t uptake the goodness. “Ultimately you want better quality grass or crops, and that benefits animal health — less health issues and better performance which helps with your bottom line.” Robbie says he finds it difficult to get the older generation to change, but the younger are open-minded enough to challenge the status quo. “The changes I have seen in stock include decreased worm burdens and fly strike. In the soil itself, the infiltration rate is greatly increased under the biological system compared to conventional practices, and there have been less animal deaths as they are not as stressed. “Using chemical inputs with drought means there is not enough feed available, and the quality animals do get isn’t as good, so they can’t consume enough to keep full. Through the biosystem, they eat less kilograms of dry matter but are feeling full as it is good quality. “I started rearing bulls because I saw the opportunity to build equity quickly. I did a lot of research, planning and setting up before my first calves arrived. It fits in well with our farm system as we buy in 600 bulls per year and I really enjoy it. “We buy in calves we need — this year we sold 500 and kept 100. To rear good animals, you need to keep hygiene,

system processes and a strategy in place. The system makes your job easier and being committed is important as you don’t get a day off for three months at least. Talk to others who have already done it if you are considering rearing stock like this. “Get quality calves to start with for success and remember good hygiene starts with the farm the stock comes from originally. They need clean pens because if they get bugs as babies, you are stuck with them the whole way through. I don’t buy through the sales yards, I personally buy on-farm from particular sellers, as I have more control of knowing their history.” Robbie makes sure the transporting vehicles are cleaned before stock

movement — before they turn up on his property. “It recently cost me $15,000 from stock not being transported in a clean vehicle. Trucks need to be fully cleaned, water blasted and antiseptic or Virkon sprayed for safety. “We finish 1,000 bulls, 10,000 lambs and 250 velveting stags, plus we do cropping and tourism so hygiene is a must for us. “Our family also have our own velveting certificate and collect the product ourselves. The deer are administered a local anaesthetic prior to cutting. Velvet is the soft form of antler, so it needs to be collected before it goes hard.“ Read more on Robbie Hill next month.

The avocado

opportunity by Ann van Engelen

Charlie Preece grew up on the Chatham Islands in a fishing and farming family before moving to New Zealand to attend boarding school and university.

N

ow he and his partner Ruth live in the Hawke’s Bay on an avocado orchard. “I met Ruth while studying in Wellington and once we both finished university we went overseas to work and travel. While we were away the GFC was in full swing, so we decided to come back to New Zealand and get into the domestic property market. This led to owning an avocado orchard, which we are still operating today. “The avocados are a fantastic crop as you don’t have to pick the fruit all at once. You are able to harvest the fruit as it’s required since it only ripens once it is picked.” Charlie says the trees are mostly selfcaring except for pruning and fertiliser, along with extra care over the winter period when it can get frosty.

“Hawkes Bay is not considered a suitable area for growing avocados commercially due to the colder climate and soils, which are more clay-based rather than the more free draining volcanic soils further north. “The colder climate also provides a challenge with frosts and excess rain. We have a frost windmill on the property and subsoil drainage to keep our trees in good nick. “We also have a mandarin block, which is our winter crop. This allows us to keep the business running while the avocados are not producing. “We came into it as a learning experience and are doing our best to try and be more proactive rather than reactive to the changing seasons and environment. We have a couple of advisers, which are invaluable.

Charlie and Ruth Preece have 250 avocado trees in their orchard which are mostly self-caring

With our relative inexperience it is important to get the most out of our crops sustainably.” Soil and leaf tests are done annually to assist in getting nutrient applications correct. The couple also have an organic beekeeper who has hives on the property all-year round — this also helps with pollination in spring. “We do spray the trees with a foliar nutrient prior to spring, but our insect and pest levels are low and don’t require any pesticides,” says Charlie. ”There are 250 avocado trees and 600 mandarin trees with a planned planting of 90 more avocado trees this coming spring.” Charlie and Ruth say a lot of growers export their fruit, but they only sell locally. “We like to manage our produce ourselves and enjoy taking care of our loyal customers rather than selling in bulk. The community is important to us, and we take pride in guaranteeing our quality on delivery. We also love to hear the positive feedback directly from our customers. “Avocados are relatively new to New Zealand, and we have become more educated with their goodness as a type of superfood. They have good fats and a great source of vitamins. Avocados originate in Central America with certain varieties becoming popular in America. The trees are grafted from fruiting trees and take three to four years to fruit. “ Trees planted from a stone will take up to 14 years or so, and they have a couple of these on the property, which have just started to fruit.

STEWART BULLED

027 444 4993 • bulledcontractors@outlook.com

Originally from Central America, the avocado is known for its ‘good fats’ and vitamins “Shelter is essential, and we have high shelterbelts surrounding the property, and internally we have nine separate bays, which is great to work in. We only harvest the amount of fruit we need and pick every three days so we can sell the fruit at varying degrees of ripeness. We sell them green or ready now and can gauge roughly on when we pick them when they will ripen. We don’t start harvesting until October/November when they have a lot more dry matter and nutrients in the fruit and they taste

really creamy. Not many people grow like we do in the bay. We want to keep the land viable in a sustainable way to ensure our children are safe to play on the land and climb the trees. “Our ultimate goal is to make the crop financially viable with a consistent yield, rather than a hobby orchard. “We still have a lot to learn and want to realise the full potential of our trees through good tree management practices, consistent crop yields and top soil health.”

DAFFODIL DAY FRIDAY 31 AUGUST 2018 ST

Spreading hope The daffodil is one of the first flowers of the spring season and represents hope for the one in three New Zealanders affected by cancer each year. Since 1990 Daffodil Day has been bringing people together to support the Cancer Society’s work and raising awareness of cancer in New Zealand. Money raised during this annual campaign is the biggest generator of funds for the Cancer Society and goes towards vital scientific research into the causes and treatment of all types of cancer, as well as providing a wide range of support services, education and awareness campaigns and programmes for people affected.

Proud to support the search for a cure. 106 Hastings St, Napier PH: (06) 835 7697 E: opossumworld@outlook.com

Whether it’s buying daffodils, donating to street collectors or purchasing merchandise — every gift counts. Conducting and funding world-class research is key to the Cancer Society’s work in preventing cancer, and with the generous funds donated by New Zealanders, there has been significant progress made in cancer research over the past 50 years. The survival rate for

many common cancers has improved by up to 30 per cent, and more than 60 per cent of cancer patients now survive five years or more. Every year treatments are getting better, and research is finding more results. More people are surviving cancer than ever before. The Cancer Society also provides a range of support services locally and nationally, which include information, health promotion

and education programmes to reduce the risk of cancer. There are many ways to support the Cancer Society by volunteering your time, donating, fundraising or by raising awareness through your local business or school. This year Daffodil Day will be held on Friday, August 31 2018. Call 0800 CANCER for more information about how to help.

Predator Free project launched

A project aimed at creating a Predator Free Hawke’s Bay was launched with the announcement of a $1.6 million kick-start in funding from the Government. Hawke’s Bay is the latest region to get behind the country’s goal to become predator-free by 2050. The first phase of the $4.86 million project will focus on removing possums from 14,500 hectares of land on Mahia Peninsula within four years, as an initial step towards ridding the region of predators. The knowledge gained in Mahia will be used to develop a low-cost farmland control and eradication model applicable to other areas of the region and New Zealand. Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is investing $1.17 million in the project and chairman, Rex Graham, says eradicating possums from Hawke’s Bay is both ambitious and realistic. “We believe we can reduce the cost of rural predator control by more than 50 per cent through smart technology and project design, and with landowners’ help I’m confident we can remove them from our landscapes,” says Mr Graham. HBRC chief executive, James Palmer, says the project fits with the council’s overarching goal of improving the region’s natural ecosystems and biodiversity and is reflected in the council’s Long Term Plan and proposed Regional Pest Management Plan.

“The regional council is committed to building strong partnerships, and this project is all about working alongside iwi, local and national organisations and the government to achieve common goals.” The project builds on the success of the Cape to City and Poutiri Ao o Tane projects, which have so far delivered more than 34 thousand hectares of innovative farmland control of possums, mustelids and wild cats, including wireless trap monitoring. An important element of these projects is the strong relationships that have been built with local iwi, as well as hundreds of landowners, schoolchildren and teachers. Predator Free 2050 Limited chief executive, Ed Chignell, says predator control at Cape Sanctuary and the Maungaharuru range show how native seabirds, threatened land birds and unique wildlife like tuatara can return to the region once predators are removed. “This project gets us started on the East Coast and enables new innovation and approaches that will be essential for our national predator-free goal,” says Mr Chignell.

ADVERTORIAL

What causes osteoarthritis? by John Arts

Part 2 Last edition we saw that osteoarthritis (OA) is mostly caused by the loss of cartilage secreting cells called chondrocytes. Their job is to maintain cartilage. If chondrocytes are damaged or die, they are unable to repair cartilage. The result is that cartilage starts to break down. Eventually, whole patches of cartilage are lost causing a bone-onbone scenario. While cartilage has no nerves, bone certainly does! While bone-onbone causes pain, much of the pain comes from misdirected inflammation. White blood cells that patrol the joint capsule respond to cartilage loss by bringing in extra fluid and a cocktail of inflammatory chemicals in a vain attempt to repair the cartilage. The result is pain, stiffness and in some cases visible swelling. My approach is firstly to adopt a nutrient-dense anti-inflammatory diet. This is high in antioxidants, omega-3 and other foods that reduce inflammation. We then add four compounds from supplements. The first is omega-3 fish oil usually between 4,000 and 6,000mg daily.

KNOW HOLES BAA-ED

We then add high-grade chondroitin sulphate at 800-1,600mg. Chondroitin sulphate (CS) is the most important joint supplement. CS is an actual component of cartilage and adding this helps chondrocytes to work properly. The problem is that most joint supplements only contain around 250mg of CS. In most cases, I start clients on 1,600mg. We then add the same amount of glucosamine and a potent 95% curcumin extract from turmeric. As an example, I have one client with OA in his knees. This was bad enough to significantly impact mobility. After three months on a personalised programme, he is now able to exercise again. His partner had OA in her thumbs and shoulders and is much better. Feel free to contact me for personalised advice. Rural Building/sheds & shelters Shelters for all by Ann van Engelen

Made from pine, cedar, iron, mixed cladding, plastic, heavy duty fabric or speciality wood, a shelter can be traditional or uniquely designed to suit your personality and requirements. Animal shelters, garden and wood sheds, carports, barns and feed storage are just a few scenarios of smaller sized buildings that may be required on your property, whether it be a farm, lifestyle block or family home acreage. There is a range of baby barns that offer more headroom and wall space than traditional baby barns and can be lined or unlined, with a range of colours, size, door and window options. The small buildings are ideal for bunkhouses, animal shelters and hen houses — the uses are limitless, and the designs take up minimal space on any property. Looking after animals is a priority and ensuring they have good shelter is a must for their health and safety both in cold weather and the heat of summer. Ensuring chickens, donkeys, goats and other animals have housing is simple, and many are now designed to be easily moved and relocated allowing fresh food and minimal pasture damage. Feed pads shelter groups of animals from wind, rain and sun and keep the feed in good condition and save

wastage. Calves need a clean, wellventilated, well-lit shelter to give them a head-start in life and providing the best possible environment for raising calves can include sheds or shelters with doors or openings on both ends to provide natural light and gentle air movement,

keeping the animals’ environment fresh and clean. It also prevents them from overheating — with even temperatures allowing them to remain more relaxed. Dairy goats benefit from the same type of system.

Rural Building/sheds & shelters Good homes make good tenants by Jill Dickie

If chickens are happy, warm, and feeling secure they’ll repay with enough eggs from each hen to keep you in cooked breakfasts, pavlovas and baked cakes for months! Chickens like to have a regular, quality food supply, and also enjoy good draught-free shelter, out of the rain and hot sun. If they are free-range, the shelter you provide can be something as simple as a hay shed, implement shed, or a treeline, as long as they have somewhere to lay those precious eggs for you. It is possible to partially free-range your hens by letting them out for the afternoon after they have ‘done their duty’, bringing them back into their house at night, to safety from predators. The house should be secure from all weathers, and provide next boxes as well as poles to roost on at night. If letting them out isn’t an option, your hen house can provide similar accommodation, and a connected run gives them a place to scratch and pick at the ground as chickens like do. A run can be as elaborate as a netting compound complete with a roof to keep wild birds or cats out, or as simple as some sticks of timber nailed together, covered with

w.harrispumps.co.nz

chicken wire and windbreak cloth. Another option, smaller again, is a mobile hen house. Built on skids or wheels, you can shut the hens in then drag or tow it to a nearby site, allowing them the freedom of fresh grass as they need it. It saves the effort of providing greens each day, gives the soil time to rejuvenate, and the hens can fertilise the ground as well. When a smaller number of chickens are being kept, accommodation is easily achievable with various coops available on the market, or easily build your own with timber and netting, as long as they have a dry and secluded spot for egg laying. Other options, if you’re not so handy on the tools, is to recycle other items into what you need. A waterproof ute canopy, for example, is just about high enough for the chooks to pop under to shelter from the rain. Gathering some of those plastic drums, securing together, and cutting chickensized doorways in the fronts; converting

an unused dog kennel or garden shed; even an unusable plastic water tank with a door for you and a door for them

cut into the side! All it takes is a little imagination, and you’ll have eggs-axctly what keeps everyone happy! CONT RACT SON ORS MER Roofing & Spouting

FORESTRY

Acknowledging forestry input The NZ Institute of Forestry has recognised the contribution of two of its outstanding leaders, Peter Clark and Russell Dale. Peter hails from Rotorua and received the NZIF Forester of the Year award. The award is one of the highest accolades the Institute can bestow and recognises an Institute member who has made an outstanding contribution to either the forestry profession or the forestry sector over the last 12 months. It recognises leadership, excellence and personal integrity, particularly where this demonstrates the character and strength of the forestry profession. “The Forester of the Year award is a fitting recognition of the contribution that Peter has made to the sector over a large number of years,” said president, David Evison. Russell Dale was awarded the Kirk Horn and medal. The Kirk Horn Flask is the most historically-valuable award in all New Zealand science, and the NZIF awards the Kirk Horn every second year, to recognise outstanding contributions in the field of forestry in New Zealand. “Russell has proved himself to be

an outstanding leader in forest management and in the management of major industry-funded forestry research programmes, over a long and distinguished career,” said Dr Evison. “The NZIF is delighted to celebrate the achievements and contributions to New Zealand forestry of Peter Clark and Russell Dale.” The election of Steve Wilton of Masterton as a Fellow of the NZ Institute of Forestry was also recorded. The election to this special membership status is granted by a vote of members and recognises the eminence of Steve in the profession of forestry. The contribution of Trish Fordyce of Auckland to the New Zealand forestry sector and her long service to the sector in the areas of environmental and land use regulation, and the application of the Resource Management Act to forestry and wood processing was also recognised, by her election as an Honorary Member of the NZ Institute of Forestry.

STUMPCHIPPING & MULCHING

PINUS RADIATA

Radiata pine is our most popular plantation species. With good reason. It grows faster in New Zealand than in its native California. Some forests have been harvested five times and are growing better than ever. As the world supply of tropical hardwood diminishes, there is exciting potential to use and export pine timber for outdoor construction. Treatments, such as acetylation or heating, make pine much more durable and hard. Our plantation pines are also excellent at capturing atmospheric carbon. A mature pine captures nearly three times as much carbon as an indigenous tree twice its age. LOVE OUR FORESTS

In for the long haul by Andy Bryenton

It’s hard to imagine a time before the white van tradesman’s office, mobile workshop, rolling tool chest and classroom for generations of apprentices, not to mention the weapon of choice for couriers facing the urban maze. There’s a classic recipe for a proper hard-working van, and it’s safe to say that relative newcomers to the scene LDV have hit the right combination of power and practicality to impress their target audience. When looking for a van to turn into a working partner, three things stand out — reliability, ease of use and comfort. The LDV G10 Cargo Van neatly ticks those boxes and then adds a bit more to more than justify its very tidy price. Those looking to balance the budget and still recruit a willing workhorse that will last the distance are already paying attention to this new contender. Addressing both performance and stamina, the G10 comes with a choice of two power options, either a two litre turbocharged petrol engine delivering 165kw mated to a six-speed auto box or a two-litre naturally aspirated unit with fuel injection. Both deliver fuel economy figures in the mid-11 litres per 100km range, and both have been designed to be easy to service and hard to punish. When it comes to ease of use, LDV have listened to tradies and couriers, who want massive cargo space, wide-opening doors both to the rear and to the sides,

Fleet force — the LDV G10 represents value for money for the working driver

and lots of options for carrying different sized and shaped loads. That means an unimpeded 2.4 x 1.278 x 1.270 metre cargo bay, along with modern luxuries such as reversing cameras to help line up with loading docks and tricky spaces. It’s in terms of comfort that the G10

moves streets ahead of the classic old van layout. Gone is the rattly old ‘church pew’ seating of ancient vans, replaced with a car-like layout and a full multimedia system. That sense of refinement comes through to the ride as well, which is a far cry from the lurching,

vague vans of the 1980s. All in all, this is a machine ready to become whatever it needs to — a courier’s runabout, a mobile workshop, a builder’s on-site office — it’s up to you. Moreover, at under $30k, there will be change for that signwriting!
