“The catchment has severe erosion and water quality issues that are impacting on the long-term economic, social and environmental sustainability of the area, in particular on Whakaki Lake,” says Ben Dalton, Ministry for Primary Industries’ head of the Regional Growth Programme. “There has been a lot of work already done in the Whakaki catchment area but there is room for further improvements.” The initiative is part of the government’s Regional Growth Programme and is a collaboration between the Ministry for Primary Industries, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and the Wairoa District Council. “We are looking to partner with the Whakaki community, including iwi, farmers and foresters, to explore and identify together a common vision for the future of the Whakaki catchment. We want the community to define the issues, explore the opportunities and look at initiatives that will work for everyone. “If we get this right we could stabilise erosion prone farmland to minimise soil loss into the lake, improve water quality, trial alternative sustainable and economically viable land use options, and enhance the overall living standard of the local community by generating job opportunities.” He said the initiative involves interviews and workshops with key locals who live around the catchment to define the issues, prioritise local needs, generate ideas and develop solutions for potential implementation. The ideas will then be written up into a business case to highlight the viability of the initiatives.

Ben Dalton, Ministry for Primary Industries’ head of the Regional Growth Programme

“What we are looking to do with the local community is ambitious, but if we work together should be achievable. We want to ensure that the initiatives developed reflect the interest of locals. We have some ideas but it’s up to the local community to decide what needs to be done.” Wairoa Mayor Craig Little says the initiative is a great project and encourages the Whakaki community to get behind and support it. “There is some real potential here for good outcomes for the community. It is great that MPI and the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council are partnering with the Wairoa District Council on this project,” he said.

Potato psyllid problem solved For more than a decade the tomato potato psyllid (TPP) (Bactericera cockerelli) has been causing headaches for New Zealand potato growers and the latest Future Farming Centre research on TPP control with mesh crop covers should be a massive boost for potato growers, consumers and the environment. Whilst considerable progress has been made with agrichemical management, the costs, both to growers and the environment are not insignificant. In a field trial comparing ‘full monty’ agrichemical regime, against three meshes with different hole sizes (0.7, 0.4 and 0.3 mm) agrichemicals had a total of 1,614 TPP. The meshes had four, five and three TPP, an astonishing 40,250 per cent reduction in TPP numbers under mesh compared with insecticides. “The result is utterly stunning, it is effectively complete control of TPP. In comparison, achieving complete control of any insect pest on crops with agrichemicals is nigh on impossible. That this can be achieved with a nonchemical approach is even more heartening as it also addresses the spectre of insecticide resistance,” said Dr Charles Merfield, head of the Future Farming Centre. Compounding the TPP result, mesh is creating a more favourable microclimate that is enhancing crop growth and yield, with total yield of mesh grown potatoes increased by 10t/ha from 84.5t/ha for the agrichemicals to

94.5t/ha for the best mesh, a 12 per cent increase. Almost unbelievably, the two best mesh yields exceeded the theoretical maximum yield of potatoes in Canterbury (potatoesnz.co.nz/research-anddevelopment/potato-yield). The marketable yields were even more impressive with a 24 per cent increase for >60g tubers and 60 per cent increase for >125g tubers under mesh. “The yield results from this trial are astounding — the theoretical yield limit has been blown out of the water. Mesh has significantly outperformed chemicals, especially for marketable yield. There is everything to like about this for growers,” said Dr Merfield. “Were this not sufficient to get growers’ interest, the economics are just as amazing. Mesh is actually cheaper than chemicals — about $1,000 per hectare less, so when combined with the better yield, gross margin profit increased between 27 per cent to 75 per cent for mesh. If this is not a stunning win for the NZ potato industry I don’t know what is.”

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

BY ANN MORGAN JORDAN BIDDLE WAS A SHEPHERD ON PIHANUI STATION, SOUTH OF WAIROA, IN REMOTE COUNTRY ON THE BANKS OF THE WAIAU RIVER AND OWNED BY HIS IWI, NGATI PAHAUWERA.

T

he 21 year old recently won the 2017 Ahuwhenua Young Maori Farmer award. The father of two grew up in Raupunga and has now been appointed head shepherd of the iwi’s Rawhiti Farm. “I was born and bred in the area but things didn’t go too well at school, so at 15 years old I had on and off casual work and went to school three days a week,” says Jordan. “At 17 years old I was offered a job on Waipahi Station with Rob Valler as a junior shepherd general. Two years later I moved to Pihanui and worked for two years there until being transferred to Rawhiti as senior shepherd.

“Pihanui is a breeding block and has 4,500 sheep. I learnt a lot there and now my goal is to get an even balance of knowledge across the board of the sheep and beef industry.” Jordan says he enjoys the dog and horse work he is involved with on the farms. “I enjoy breaking them in — that is what got me interested in the career early. It is like looking at a blank piece of paper and turning it into something that is worth a lot more than it was. “Things are getting a lot more intensive in my new role. On this property I also fatten bulls, so the buzz is to turn a weaner into a 600kg rising two-year-old bull.

JORDAN WON THIS YEARS AHUWHENUA YOUNG MAORI FARMER AWARD

“I believe pasture management would be my biggest process. As long as the pasture is good and you have nice rotations going on, you keep things simple, have good water, good fencing and a good basic set up — things should go well. “With shepherding I enjoy mustering the most and the working of the dogs. The properties are steep to medium so there is a lot of mustering on horseback. “The strategy to change was planned — Pihanui was sheep and beef as well. I had 500 Angus breeding cows so transferring here will expand my beef knowledge.” At Rawhiti farm Jordan has a kale crop for winter feed. “This is a good learning curve as it is steep country and you can’t really crop that easily — it is not as intensive as rolling to flat. “At the moment we have got 193 weaner bulls. We will use the crop to get them through the winter, and from there they will be on a rotation and we will finish fattening them when they hit approximately 600kg. “My future plan is basically to get as much knowledge as possible and keep pushing myself to progress forward and keep climbing to the different management positions.

“Our family had nothing to do with farming — my dad was in forestry. I just started working from the bottom and worked myself into the roles. I had no previous knowledge. I jumped in and started swimming and following instructions, and did as I was told. “Farming is a good career — it certainly is not for money, it is more about personal fulfillment and working for my own iwi allows me to motivate other young people to get into the farming sector whilst they have the land. It keeps us focussed and motivated and you can go far. Working for iwi is no different to working for any other farmer — they still expect high results and being able to motivate others is a positive thing. ‘Winning the award was mind blowing. Knowing where I have come from, it showed no matter how hard a start you get in life, it is possible to become successful. “If you are coming into the industry half hearted you are wasting your time because when the going gets tough you

have to fight to want to succeed — and it does get tough with long hours and hard work. As long as you are determined in your goal you can achieve.” Iwi chairman Toro Waaka, said it was a remarkable achievement for Jordan as he could have followed a completely

different path had it not been for the way his family had instilled a work ethic and kept him on track. “What he yielded in academic achievement, although now studying for Primary ITO qualifications, he made up with his own skills.”

THE RELIABLE BY ANN MORGAN SHANI AND DARREN KEIGHLEY LIVE ON SIX ACRES IN HAUMOANA WITH THEIR HERD OF GYPSY HORSES AT PARKHILL STABLES GYPSY COB HORSE STUD.

“I

moved over from Australia 14 years ago and had always had horses. We were looking at starting a Clydesdale stud here on our property but had never owned a stallion before. Because they are so huge, and having no experience with stallions we decided Clydesdales may be too big,” says Shani. Shani says in 2006 Gypsies were introduced into New Zealand, and they sounded perfect as they are the same temperament as Clydesdales but don’t have the height. “Gypsies are originally from the United Kingdom. The travellers use

them but they are very expensive to import from the UK. We considered getting one from Australia but they were very expensive too.” Shani discovered there were some in New Zealand and managed to find a lady in the South Island with a rising two-year-old stallion for sale in 2013. “James had come over from the UK in utero. She had imported a pregnant mare and he was about 18 months old. We thought he could be our future stallion and by having one who had never been with a mare, he could gain our trust first and listen to us. We already had mares and bred with other

stallions so we had a bit of experience. Once James got a bit older we decided to break him in before he served the mares because it would be good for him to learn respect.” The couple never intended to only have him in a paddock serving mares. He competes and earns his keep as well. Shani says having the horses out and about gives them good coverage as the breed are not very well known. Initially people thought they were only good for pulling carts. “We have had thoroughbreds and warmbloods come to James. It is a great mix as they get the nature of the Gypsy but the ability of the sport horse. “In Hawkes Bay a lot of people get into hunting, and by crossing the finer boned horses with James, they get the hunter types. The largest he served was 17.2 hands. She had to stand in a ditch for him and he managed to do it.” This season Parkhill Gypsies have 12 babies due, and James sired 13 last season. For his very first season they only allowed him to cover three. “We try and get him out competing as much as we can, at least twice a month. We have put a lot of training in and he has been doing so well. “Their nature is perfect for the family, and they are weight bearing so anyone can ride them. Even the babies are accepting of humans from the minute they pop out. The difference between sport horse babies and Gypsies is incredible. Gypsies are willing and trusting and they learn fast.”

“With our help there is hope.” P: 06 878 9246

ALL THE HORSES AT PARKHILL STABLES ARE TAKEN OUT TO A VARIETY OF EXERCISE LOCATIONS The home property is six acres and they lease another two. One is hilly and is good to turn the horses out on over the winter as this gives them hill work and helps develop their rump muscles and stamina. The other property is near the beach and this gives the horses other experiences. “They are very low maintenance and are happy to eat any type of grass and hay. They adapt easily due to their heritage in the UK with the travellers where they get tied to the side of the road and eat whatever is there — they don’t need special feed or baleage,” says Shani. “James loves swimming and we take him to the beach so he can wash. He

likes to dip under the water and have a swim — it’s his forte. “His rider Laura competes him and I pleasure ride him. I trick him and Laura does all the competition work including dressage, show jumping and cross country. “He visits pony clubs to teach children about stallions and knows if he has a saddle on or is out and about, he is not allowed to talk to girls — that is for his designated breeding paddock. “We are so proud of how he behaves. We have a waiting list for our babies which is exciting and means we have built up a good reputation. “He competed at Horse of the Year and took out reserve champion and our girls get out there too. They are just as important as James.”

Therapy for osteoarthritis Studies, including J P Pelletier (Arthritis Research and Therapy, 2016) demonstrate that chondroitin sulphate at high levels has the ability to modify joints affected by osteoarthritis. In particular there was a marked reduction in further cartilage loss with overall joint improvement. There are several ways CS can improve arthritic joints. Firstly it seems to inhibit a number of inflammatory compounds that are associated with OA. The second is previously mentioned reductions in cartilage loss. The third is even more promising. According to research by Y Herotin (2010) CS appears to stimulate the chondrocyte cells that produce cartilage. High levels of CS seem to increase the collagen needed to make the cartilage matrix. • Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

John Arts comments: “I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

Animal health problems Last year, a farmer asked me if I would help his mate up the road. His friend had started with 500 cows to calve, and with peak milking soon to begin, he now had a little over 460 with which to complete the season. Twenty-two cows had died from metabolic problems, 63 had clinical milk fever, and some had aborted. He was losing milking profit and spending more on medical bills. Before I talk about the cause of his problem, I’d like to talk about the farmer’s profit window. September to December is the period where milk production is at its maximum. It’s when most of the money is made. Because of this, farmers should be gearing up to take maximum advantage of it. Ideally, in that profit window, a farmer wants each of his cows to be producing 2.2kgms/day from September to December. But getting an animal to hit the magical 2.2kgms/day depends entirely on the condition they arrive in at the time of milking. That means preparing cows to be in peak health at the start — so that they can maintain good condition throughout the calving, milking and mating periods. Preconditioning is the transitioning period of four weeks prior to calving. The goal is to bring animals up to a 5.0 level of conditioning and this is achieved through a careful combination of diet, trace elements, and supplements. Will a farmer need to spend money to get animals up to a 5.0 condition? Yes, but spending here will be rewarded in two ways: 1. with increased milk production 2. with reduced health problems and naturally better mating results. Think of preconditioning as an investment: you spend money to make more money. If a cow comes into calving with an average to low condition level, she will calve in a tired state. This state will drop further as she expends energy and resources to cope with calving. In her tired state, she may have difficulty pushing out her calf due to low muscle strength. With her immunity levels compromised, she is more susceptible

Nutritional therapy can be effective in helping osteoarthritis. For example I have been helping someone with osteoarthritis (OA) in one knee which affected her mobility. She also had hypertension and swollen ankles from poor lower leg circulation. We used a combination of therapies to target all the problems. We added my joint supplement at a double dose delivering 1500mg of high grade chondroitin sulphate with the same of glucosamine sulphate and 200mg of a proprietary 95% curcumin extract (from turmeric). To this we added 6000mg of Omega 3 fish oil and a bullet blender recipe I have developed to assist circulation to help her swollen ankles. This included raw beetroot to dilate blood vessels. The result is that after three months the pain has reduced by about 50% and her ankles are less swollen. I expect these improvements to continue. High levels of chondroitin sulphate (CS) are important as it is a major constituent of cartilage. At therapeutic levels this can help with cartilage function and has antiinflammatory activity.

to metabolic sickness. But even if the cow avoids illness, her reduced conditioning means she has less energy to give to milk production. The farmer may even have to milk her less to avoid making her weaker. In the case of my farmer, that scenario was true of all 500 cows. None had a hope of reaching 2.2kgms/day. If a cow comes into calving with an elevated level of conditioning (5.0), she will be able to calve with relative ease. With strong muscles and high energy levels, she can push out the calf without compromising her own health. That means she can immediately produce 2.2kgms/day straight after calving. Being healthy, the cow also possesses a strong appetite. Her desire to continually feed enables her to maintain good conditioning throughout the Profit Window and beyond and is far less susceptible to sickness. What was the problem with our farmer? When the Forward Farming team was called in to help, we went through the key areas, looking for causes for the herd’s poor health. The management plan was sound. The feed balance was good. The problem was in the feed quality, or more precisely, the soil from where the feed came. Our soil test revealed several key problems that accounted for the poor animal health: nitrogen levels were far too high. One effect would have been the suppression of calcium in the soil which had left magnesium too high and out of balance with calcium. Sodium was also too high in relation to potassium. If I had seen these soil readings without first knowing the herd’s condition, I would have deduced that their health was compromised. This soil/feed nutritional imbalance was only ever going to hurt these cows! If you feel you are interested in unlocking more of your farm’s potential and maybe an answer to your frustrations and questions we can help with the big picture.

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

ADVERTORIAL

Managing urinary nitrogen on your farm How much can we learn from a handful of grass? The answer is both remarkably simple and incredibly complex — but thankfully, modern scientific techniques can assess the biology and chemistry of just such a sample to provide some clear-cut advice for adjusting farming practices. It’s all thanks to a Kiwi company who are leading the world. Raymond Burr from QLabs is a farmer first and a man of science in equal measure. From his early days share farming sheep and beef to converting a

BREAKTHROUGH TECHNOLOGY

large spread to dairy in the King Country in ‘89, he knows the challenges farmers face in a constant race to improve their profitability. Raymond studied at Massey University, and his investigations into soil and pasture health with QLabs today • Proactively manage your animals’ urinary Nitrogen • Now YOU can control your Ruminant Nitrogen Utilisation Efficiency (RNUE) • Qlabs new patented method is now available

would have amazed his professors back then. Then again, the foundation of what QLabs offer the farming sector is based on sound common sense. QLabs have been granted a patent on their latest form of herbage analysis, which can very accurately look at the nutritional content of even a small representative 500gram sample of grass and drill down into its composition. One major advantage is detecting levels of nitrogen, which cannot be stored by ruminant animals like cattle. This means a very accurate forecast of urinary nitrogen content can be built up — a valuable tool for evaluating efficient farm management. Qlabs patented method means that with a single test of a sample of pasture a farmer can fine tune and plan ahead for a number of factors. Environmental responsibility is one, but maximising the

nutrition of every square foot of pasture is another — and that means better yields whether for dairy and drystock. Potential health issues can be nipped in the bud long before they become a vet’s problem. “The science may be high tech, but the principle is simple,” says Raymond. “Arm yourself with knowledge and get the optimum out of your farm.” In the 1980s the rising plate meter was invented by a farmer, and accurate pasture budgeting soon followed. From the early 1990s we became proficient at growing more protein by applying more Nitrogen. It is time to move on with the latest patented method invented by an ex-farmer. Now for a relatively low cost, you can monitor what your ruminating animals are about to eat. Increasing efficiency will increase profitability and decrease your environmental impact — a win-win solution.

Giving back to nature

VIETNAM

& CAMBODIA

Dunnys — and what we do during our ‘daily visit’ are a bit like that other subject our mother never talked about — we were given our potty training, the nappies were removed and from then on we did our own learning! And since having our nappys taken off us we have all learned that ‘go and flush’ is what we do. Every day — or at least most days for most of us. That’s a lot of flushing. Imagine for a moment the immense infrastructure that our local councils have provided for this simple convenience — pun intended — where water is either captured in purpose-made dams or taken from existing rivers, piped for miles, chemically treated to drinking standard, and piped for more miles to our place so we can simply push the appropriate flush button — 1 or 2 — to send it for more miles to another treatment plant where it is again reconstituted chemically and piped yet again out to sea — or to a river — or somewhere on the planet! It is estimated that every one of us has flushed away 6,500 litres of treated water a year since our nappies were taken off us. Imagine the proportion of the council rates that we pay that goes to pay for our flush button convenience. But like so many other aspects of daily living the economic and ecological cost of the ‘daily visit’ has been re-visited. In 2001 a composting toilet was produced in the USA specifically for boats. They called it AirHead. Boats call their toilets ‘heads’ in recognition of the historic use of a simple plank at the head of the ship back in the sailing ship era. ‘Going to the head’ was sometimes a hazardous necessity. And the USA development used air instead of water. Air head. This was certainly a different way to go. The toilet employed a compost

medium to process the human waste and it worked. The toilet is effectively its own treatment plant. No water, no pipes, no smell. It is not surprising that the concept has been accepted world wide and has spread from boats to caravans and motor homes. Off-grid living is gaining a huge following world wide and the Airhead toilet offers this community an economic alternative that is totally in tune with nature without involving the permitting requirements of conventional dunnys. These toilets give back to Mother Earth. They retain our body’s natural separation of liquid and solid waste and each is treated separately. Both elements benefit the environment when applied correctly as many tiny home and off-grid cabin dwellers are learning. Naturally.

CARBON LOCKUP

1 tree

=

1 sheep

Planting forests is a simple and effective way to offset greenhouse gas emissions from livestock, while at the same time creating a financial investment for the future. Trees take surplus carbon out of the atmosphere and turn it in to wood. Just one 20 year old Pinus radiata tree will lock up all the carbon a single sheep will have emitted in its entire lifetime. One tree would also lock up all the carbon emitted by one beef animal in one year and 1.5 trees will capture a dairy cow’s emissions in one year. New Zealand foresters plant more than 50 million trees a year.

FORESTRY ADVERTORIAL

A good time to harvest Many blocks of trees planted in the early 1990s are near maturity but owners are unsure when to harvest and how to arrange harvest and marketing. Where do I start? Key questions asked are: when will my trees be ready for harvest, what is my estimated return and who will manage the process for me? Other considerations are: harvest crew availability, and risk areas for forest owners, particularly health and safety and environmental compliance. FOMS provides full services from forest assessment to harvest planning, harvesting, marketing and replanting. We offer a wide range of marketing options including commission based agreements, fixed price contracts, and lump sum purchase to suit your individual requirements and risk appetite. FOMS have 15 regional managers and market around 800,000 tonnes of logs per annum. Our shareholders are longterm industry professionals who work day-to-day in the business, we have a track record of paying on time every time, and we have access to a large

number of experienced harvest crews and transport companies. What about my health and safety exposure? Forest Owners have responsibilities under the HSE act so you need to be confident that your harvesting and marketing manager protects your interests. FOMS has industry leading H&S systems and a full-time H&S manager to ensure this is covered. FOMS also has a full-time environmental manager to ensure we are meeting our obligations with local authorities. Contact FOMS. Log prices are currently very strong so now is a good time to meet with us to discuss your trees. We are happy to assess your forest and discuss any questions you might have. by Ann Morgan Kim and Sarah Caldwell, along with friends Andrea Leach and Greg Kane have invented a unique calf carrier, ‘The Moova’, eliminating a lot of animal and staff stress at calving time.

“G

reg is an engineer and we were visiting Kim and Sarah last year during calving and Kim had a load of calves brought into the shed. They were falling over each other, and mucky and Kim came up with the idea to somehow hang the calves off something.” says Andrea. The calf carrier is designed to transport calves in a sling like fashion and it keeps them upright and stable and for the staff there is not so much lifting and the weaker calves are safer

as they are ‘carried upright’ instead of having to stand. “Each unit takes a couple of days to make as there is a fair amount of components to the invention,” says Greg. The friends decided to take their invention to the National Field Days and won the Crowe Horwath innovation award. “Winning the award was awesome. I used to go to the Field Days as a young man and think it would be neat to invent something — the whole number eight

DAIRY wire thing. To go with our idea and win was absolutely amazing. “I work in the dairy industry and for 20-odd years we have worked with health and safety and with this, although you still need to bend and pick the calf up, from then it is all straight lifting and much easier on the body.” Each calf is placed into the fitted harness which holds two animals individually. It is similar to a stretcher going into an ambulance meaning the weaker calves get transported more peacefully. The device allows up to 20 calves to be moved comfortably at one time. Kim grew up in Auckland but he spent most holidays on his grandparents farm. “When I left school I worked in orchards in Katikati and spent 13 years in the industry before I went farming,” says Kim. “I then had the opportunity to manage a farm in Whanganui. I worked there for 13 years until their son returned and then we came dairy farming. “I am in my 14th year managing this property with 1,250 dairy cows for a Maori Corporation.” Kim says the environmental and economic challenges have been interesting to work with. “Being in the Lake Taupo catchment we are governed by the NDA that goes into the lake. It is great working here and for a Maori incorporation, it has been very rewarding environmentally. “This farm has been a challenge as it has the highest nitrogen discharge and

we work with EW and the councils. We want to make sure we are doing the best we can for the environment and this is also how the trailer came about, to improve life for the stock and our staff. “We had an amazing amount of interest at the Field Days. Animal welfare was totally supportive and said how special the carrier is. The minister for MPI was also very impressed. It is another step toward the future, but it is not my line of work to manufacture and distribute. As demand for our product increases we are hoping someone can come along and take over the production and management of it. “The dairy industry has obviously had its ups and downs with payout and fluctuations and is becoming more intensive. “Everyone has to make changes with animal welfare, and health and safety, and improve how we are doing things in the industry.” “I believe we can all farm smarter and improve. It is not cutting costs but ensuring you spend your money wisely and minimise financial input but try to achieve maximum output. “When we came onto this farm we were introduced to the nitrogen cap and had to make the farm work within that cap and we have done so. Change doesn’t have to be hard, thinking smarter and being wiser goes a long way toward success in the industry. “We are excited about our invention and how positive it will be for animal and staff welfare in the future.”

The calf carrier prevents calves being knocked over and stood on during transportation

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

BY JOANNA MANSON THE HAWKE’S BAY FARMERS MARKET ISN’T JUST A LOCAL FAVOURITE, AS IT HAS BECOME A TOP TOURIST ATTRACTION AND A PLACE THAT TRANSFORMS IDEAS INTO BUSINESSES. IT THRIVES THANKS TO THE PASSIONATE GROWERS, PRODUCERS AND SUPPORTERS WHO TURN UP EVERY SUNDAY.

T

he idea for a local market was the brainchild of communityminded Sir Graeme Avery, along with a group of Hawke’s Bay growers and producers, and the market was instigated and created with a humble 27 stalls in October 2000. For a time it came under the umbrella of Food Hawke’s Bay which acted as a parent company until three years ago when marketing manager Emma Glover said “it got onto its own two feet.” Fast forward 17 years and the A&P showgrounds in Hastings are still home to the market which hums along through

the winter and summer months. Except for seasonal growers, stallholders must be present all year round. “In the peak of summer we have up to 65 stalls, in winter it drops to 50. Stallholders can’t pick and choose when they want to turn up and I think that’s what leads to the success, its consistent,” says Emma. “For Hastings we are the biggest tourist attraction in the region. I think it especially helps being a Sunday morning market and people come to the area especially for it — it’s a must do if you’re visiting the bay.”

STALL HOLDERS ARE ABLE TO BUILD A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE BUYER AND IN RETURN THE SELLER IS ABLE TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE BUSINESS INCUBATION UNIT PRESENT AT THE MARKET

Emma arrives at the showgrounds each Sunday morning at 6.30am greeting the vendors as they set up, and over the next two hours watches an empty paddock flourish into a full market space. “There’s is a waiting list for stall holders. We’d never say we’re full, there is always room but we do have to make it viable for all before we accept and make sure they have a point of difference. “Some of the businesses at the market start as a project and grow from that so we do have some businesses leave due to the growth.” Joanie Williams and husband Richard started their business idea, Origin Earth at the markets and has since gone onto create

a thriving business. As a dairy specialist with a strong focus on nutrition, Joanie had a good understanding about the influence of feeding processes on milk flavour and decided to start her own dairy company. “We have an outstanding business incubation unit in our farmers’ market and I honestly believe it’s the one of the biggest and best, where you can start with not much more than an idea. “For our business we couldn’t have done it without the farmers’ market. It’s incredible what you can get for $50-60 a week stall — thousands of customers over a four hour period. Origin Earth’s growth is a testament to the success Joanie has achieved.

HAWKE’S BAY FARMERS MARKET HAS BECOME A MAJOR TOURIST ATTRACTION IN HASTINGS

“In November 2010 I bought 1,160 litres of milk in 20 litre buckets in a refrigerated trailer to the market — last October I bought 49,800 litres.” Her advice for others is to start on a similar journey. “The farmers market is a low risk way of doing it and there is good support with other store holders.” She says as well as this, support from the food service industry means that chefs and restaurant owners are often trawling through the market to source produce. “It’s the most vibrant attraction in Hawkes Bay. There is nowhere else — we have so much diversity and that’s what makes our market so good.

It represents that diversity — from fish and meats to every form of vege, high quality wines, great coffee and dairy. “Our market wouldn’t be anything without Emma — she is a sensational market manager.” Looking forward Emma says she would love to see the growth of customers but recognises it can be a Catch 22 with customers versus stallholders. “It’s all about getting the balance correct and focussing on improving everyday lives on an everyday basis by getting people to purchase locally.” The Hawke’s Bay Farmers Market runs every Sunday from 8.30am–12.30pm.

The whole nine yards

by Andy Bryenton

For decades, Deutz Fahr have been perfecting their range of tractors to meet stringent European emissions controls while still delivering maximum power and performance. With numerous awards in their trophy case and a team of engineers to rival that of fellow German manufacturers like Mercedes Benz and Porsche, their claim to the title of top agricultural machinery fabricators has only been strengthened by the arrival of their latest offering — the ultra powerful Nine Series. Built on the premise that there’s no substitute for raw power — except raw power under precision control — the heat of the new Nine Series is an uncompromising 336 horsepower intercooled twin turbo six cylinder diesel. High injection pressure and computerised engine management deliver 90 percent of max torque well down the rev range, allowing this tractor to tackle even the most heavy-duty tasks when mated up with serious machinery. The on board computer system optimises injection for efficiency no matter if the Nine Series is moving from field to field or engaged in serious power harrowing, undersowing or cultivation. Front and rear PTO with multiple selectable speeds comes as standard, because efficient large-scale farming demands big implements. And it’s all commanded from a cab which has been designed as both comfortable and intuitive, with controls easily at hand. In

fact, innovations such as Deutz Fahr’s continuously variable TTv transmission mean there are less things for the operator to worry about — the Nine Series is also built with modern satellite navigation and mapping in mind. With the ability to conquer long days in the field comes the necessity to ensure operator safety and comfort — so extra care and attention has been lavished on making the cab of the Nine Series roomy and well ventilated, with acres of glass and a clear view down the sloping

bonnet to make precise turning as simple as possible. In fact, it’s amazing how easy it is to place and handle such a large and powerful machine, even on uneven terrain in the field. This combination of power, precision and the ability to adapt to multiple roles on the farm saw the Nine Series win the ‘Golden Tractor’ award for design on its initial release — further tuning and fettling have only made it a better machine. In the order of high-horsepower tractors, this is the benchmark to beat.

Ready for anything by Andy Bryenton

The venerable Yamaha AG 125 has been a common sight on Kiwi farms for so long now that it’s almost part of the scenery. Simple, easy to maintain and able to take a lot of good-natured punishment, the little blue machine is easy to compare to other hard-wearing rural classics like the swanndri and the gumboot. As an upshot, there’s a whole generation out there who know how to ride an AG 125. Many kids from farming families would have mastered the diminutive single-cylinder bike with its distinctive knobbly tyres well before it was time to learn to drive the family car. And that means there’s a huge crossover market for Yamaha’s street-ready version of the Ag 125 — the YTZ125. Really, it’s just common sense. Adding the necessary bits and pieces to allow a number plate and road legal status was a snap for Yamaha, who after all have a stable of road bikes ranging from the commuter practical to the blisteringly fast. And there are numerous times when zipping down from the homestead to the local shops, around to the neighbours, or indeed down the highway to another block of grazing land is on the cards. The YTZ125 allows, if nothing else, the ability to do this without changing vehicles. But there’s more to this machine than just convenience. With the same

SAFETY FIRST

125cc of power from an air cooled four stroke single cylinder motor, the same terrain-busting ride height and suspension, and a similar feel to the AG 125, the YTZ125 inspires on road confidence and still allows dirt-trail and paddock work. Perhaps like nothing else, this machine bridges the gap between two worlds of motorcycling — that of the serious workhorse and that of riding for the sheer pleasure of it. Coming out of a heritage of real farm endurance — the YTZ has been extensively put through its paces in the South Island back blocks — there’s nimble balance and lightweight handling here which fosters confidence. Those who have experienced the open road as well as the trail may very well be tempted to look at Yamaha’s other offerings — a selection which will have true petrol heads salivating. In the meantime, the learner approved, farm tested YTZ125 offers practicality as well as a taste of the ‘other side’ of motorcycling — and all for a very neat price.

Cross purposes — the Yamaha YTZ125 can handle the farm, the highway or the trail with equal ease
