Make methane target achievable

Integrity community media

by Paul Campbell

DairyNZ chief executive Dr Tim Mackle has sent a clear message to the government, telling parliament’s Environment Select Committee that a proposed 47 per cent methane reduction target would be both unachievable and setting farmer’s businesses up to fail.

DairyNZ chief executive Dr Tim Mackle

“The New Zealand dairy sector is committed to playing our part in the transition to a low-emissions economy, alongside the rest of the country,” said Dr Mackle. “We are acutely aware of the importance of looking after the environment and maintaining sustainable and competitive businesses too. “We know there are costs for our farmers, but there are also costs for global inaction. That’s why we are seeking pragmatic and prudent policies that enable action and support our farmers to play their part on climate change. “Farmers want to do what is right. They are ready to go, but they need a fair target that they can buy into. A 47 per cent methane reduction target is simply setting farmers up to fail if the tools are not available. “DairyNZ proposes that the 2050 methane reduction target be set at up to 24 per cent and regularly reviewed

against robust criteria. This position is supported by Fonterra and its shareholders’ council, Miraka, Synlait and Tatua. “This will be a real challenge for our sector, but we are up for it. While there are things we can do now on-farm, much of the reduction in emissions will be reliant on technological advances in feed, breeding or other interventions. “A lot is being asked of our farmers, such as water quality and biosecurity. If a methane target is set based on a global scenario, rather than what is sensible at home, they will simply disengage. “This isn’t an academic exercise. There will be real implications and real costs for real people. “At the end of the day, most farmers are small business owners doing their best. “With an up to 50 per cent cut in methane, dairy farmers’ total profit could reduce by 33–42 per cent across the 2030–2050 period.”

Hawke’s Bay student Izy Greville spent part of the recent school holidays honing her leadership skills at a unique course called Raising the Standards. The event was organised by NZ Young Farmers and funded by DairyNZ. The 17-year-old was one of 14 teenagers from the lower North Island selected to attend the threeday programme in Napier, which was designed to enhance the skills of emerging leaders within school-based TeenAg club. The group visited Bostock NZ’s organic apple orchard and the Mr Apple packhouse. “I found it really beneficial, especially the sessions on networking and building an impressive curriculum vitae,” said the Woodford House student. “Those are skills, which are extremely relevant as most of us try to line-up parttime jobs in the school holidays.” Students learned about cadetships, overcoming pressure, dealing with conflict, interview techniques and budgeting. They heard from numerous guest speakers, including a banker, vet, viticulturist, a technical field representative and the sustainability

manager for a large dair y farming business. “Going inside the apple packhouse where the fruit was graded and sorted was an eye-opening experience,” said Izy. “It was a huge, highly-automated operation involving lots of technology and science. The packhouse was fascinating and not what I was expecting. Each apple is photographed by high-tech machinery to check for bruising.” The Mr Apple packhouse is fitted with multi-million dollar sorting equipment and an automatic defect grader. The technology takes 240 photos of every apple in a split second to assess its external and internal quality. It means the machine snaps approximately 640,000 photos of apples each minute, stopping defect fruit from being exported. Izy was one of four Hawke’s Bay students on the course and was joined by Kaylee Hutchinson, Annabel Bowen and Emma Dunderdale. “The field trip opened my mind to the wide variety of jobs in the horticulture

Emma Dunderdale, Izy Greville and Jade Rivers at the Raising the Standards event organised by NZ Young Farmers and DairyNZ

sector, which I was previously unaware of,” said Emma. The 16-year-old lives on a sheep farm in Ongaonga and is the chair of the TeenAg club at Central Hawke’s Bay College. The year 12 student is considering studying a Bachelor of Agricultural Science or a Bachelor of Veterinary Technology at Massey University. “I like animals and science. I think studying agricultural science will keep my options open to a larger number of job opportunities once I have graduated.” The students were from Woodford House, Central Hawke’s

Bay College, Iona College, Wairarapa College, Rathkeale College, Palmerston North Girls’ High School, Palmerston North Boys’ High School and Feilding High School. “Many didn’t realise there are jobs in the banking sector, which involve working solely with agri-business clients,” said Mary Blain from NZ Young Farmers. The guest speakers were from PGG Wrightson, BNZ, Waterforce, BEL Group, Vet Services Hawke’s Bay, Delegats — Crownthorpe Vineyard, CP Wool and Miraka.

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

Dave Jordan first established hemp growing in 2008 with the health and wellbeing of the environment in mind and a vision to create a new industry in New Zealand.

W

orking in adventure tourism, Dave was disturbed by the pollution showing up on the land and in waterways around the country. On meeting Anne in 2011, she joined him in his mission, and they formed HempFarm NZ Ltd. “Dave’s brother mentioned hemp, so Dave researched and discovered it is an amazing plant with many benefits,” says Anne.

“There many varieties of hemp, including the shorter variety, which is grown mostly for the seeds that are used to make hemp food. The taller dual crops are grown for the seeds and stalk to make products such as food, fibre and building materials. We grew our first acre crop in the Waikato and saved the seeds and grew two acres the next year. In our third year, we planted 32 hectares and planned on growing more crops in

Waikato as the land is excellent quality, however, there is a shortage of seed drying and infrastructure. “My son Harley Aspinall developed the brand look and feel and built our website and digital marketing. Every weekend Dave and I would attend markets around the country and pack orders at night in our shed. We harvested mostly by hand and after a lot of research now use a dedicated harvesting machine.” The couple now works with farmers through a growers group who are cropping across five regions. “We have recently moved into a 4,000 square metre hemp food dedicated facility in Tauranga and work alongside Carfields, on the agricultural growing and machinery arm of the business. It is about enabling industry with sustainable solutions. Hemp has no tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive part of the cannabis plant as it is a totally different cultivar.

“It is planted October and must have good, fertile soil. We do not use pesticides or herbicides in our growing programme. It takes four months to grow up to four metres tall and is harvested in March for seed and fibre. This year we have planted 500 hectares, and in the coming season we will be planting around 2,000 hectares.” A dual variety supplies food, fibre, medicine and fuel. “We have recently produced our first press cold pressed oil, which we call Kiwi Hemp Seed Oil and it has helped people with various issues like eczema, psoriasis and joint issues. You can have it in salads, dressings, dips, or just drizzled on food. The testimonials are all on our my.hempfarm.co.nz website. “We will be installing a dehuller to produce hemp hearts. They are similar tasting to pine nuts, very nutty and delicious. They are nature’s most nutrient-dense seeds and are a complete

Dave, Anne and the team at Hemp Farm New Zealand now have a 4,000 square metre food dedicated facility to work from

protein supplying all the essential amino acids, fatty acids, magnesium, vitamins and minerals. A tablespoon a day is the recommended daily amount. “We are in the process of producing flavoured protein powders and hemp milk. Our milk is already in the hospitality industry for frothy coffees. Our vision is to take organic hemp to the world. We have a growers group, and this year farmers in Fielding, Taupo, Hawke’s Bay, Canterbury and Manawatu grew for us. “Our harvester has two cutter bars on it to remove the seed and take off the stalk, which is placed behind the harvester in windrows that are then bailed. We will set up more seed drying facilities in other areas to grow the industry.” HempFarm recently signed a partnership agreement with NZ Yarn. “They process merino wool, and we will be blending the hemp with wool for carpets and yarns. Non-woven matting

for erosion control and seed matting are other products we are planning, as it won’t have any chemicals seeping into the soil and waterways. Every industry can use hemp, including plastics and building. “Farmers are loving having something different to get their teeth into while getting a financial return, which at least equals dairy. Planting on the boundary makes it a good barrier, and it can help with run-off into the waterways as a mopper crop. Hemp locks the carbons up forever and is one of the most positive ways we can accomplish positive results right here in New Zealand. “It is our passion to clean up our precious environment, and we are very proud of the progress we are making and plan to see as much hemp growing in New Zealand as you see maize. Once we get to at least 10,000 hectares, we will feel like we are starting to make a real difference.”

T

he summit, run in partnership with Bayer and Nuffield Brazil, brings together young change-makers to tackle the challenges of how to feed a growing population by 2050. At 23 years old Courtney teaches students through the Sir Peter Blake Trust about sustainability and the environment through virtual reality, and she will share her ideas for tackling global food security on the world stage in early November. “I travel around schools using virtual reality to show the students what is going on in the oceans, and the relationship this has with actions we carry out on the land. This enables them to make

their own decisions about what they are seeing. The pilot year has received really positive feedback,” says Courtney. “It is great to see the different deciles and opportunities to make learning fun, which is what inspired me to think about how we could use virtual reality to establish those conversations about agriculture in our communities.” “I am looking forward to representing our country at the summit. From 2,800 applications worldwide, 100 were chosen from 45 different countries. We will be able to collaborate and work on our pool of ideas to make them a reality. “To be considered, we had to suggest an idea of what we could do

to reduce global hunger and present a video.” Courtney pitched ideas on how to tackle food insecurity in the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. She focussed on creating accessible education opportunities in agriculture for young people by utilising technology such as virtual reality. “Using technology to present what is going on in agriculture helps because what is seen in the media is a disconnect between urban and rural communities. Being able to show what is really happening and what New Zealand has to offer will hopefully encourage more people to become involved. Many people think agriculture is just milking a cow or being on a station in the high country, but you can be involved in other areas. I envisage being inspired by other ideas throughout the world and how we can use them to best impact the position New Zealand has in the fight against world hunger. “My Ayrshire Stud, Inca Ayrshires is doing well, and I am slowly increasing my herd. Ayrshires are under-represented as people typically think Jersey or Holstein cows. I began by purchasing the second-tier animals that farmers were willing to sell, looking at overall confirmation and production potential before concentrating on specific traits. I have bred a few calves and am looking forward to the ones that are about to be born. I also buy and sell to increase my genetic pool.” Courtney is heavily involved in the Northern Districts Royal Agricultural Society Youth.

“Due to M bovis, there weren’t many cattle shows last season, so I focussed on finishing my master’s degree in natural science and working on my breeding. We are hoping there will be more shows again this year. “For my masters, my thesis project was on bacteriophages. “The microbes in soils link to agriculture and lab research. There are a lot of implications, which I can use in the farming sector with antibiotic resistance. The bacteriophage isn’t well known but can help with things like the different types of mastitis. The virus itself is a natural predator of bacteria with the same ability to kill them just like antibiotics; however, bacteria are much slower to develop resistance. I researched the particular protein that has the killing property against bacteria and used it to help develop a prophylactic antimicrobial spray. This is helpful in places such as cowsheds, hospitals and across human and agricultural medicine.” Courtney is travelling to the Perth Royal Show in September to represent New Zealand at the Rural Ambassador competition. “It is a leadership programme and we are interviewed, judged on our involvement in agriculture and the impact we have on youth in agriculture. We will exchange ideas and utilise these to enhance our shows here. “All these events are about progressing the agricultural movement worldwide. Our input is just as important as everyone else’s around the world. Comparing and contrasting with the

different environments helps everyone come up with new solutions from knowledge and experiences others have gone through — it is about learning and advancing together. I believe agriculture will become very technology

focussed with robotic milking systems, things making farming more cost and time efficient. There are a lot of endless possibilities, but I hope we stay true to our type of farming here in New Zealand.”

Off-farm I enjoy freestyle snow skiing and teaching people to ski. My wife Alison is English, and we met in Canada when we were both ski instructors. “After I finished my time skiing, I struggled to find a career so chose dairy farming because I enjoy the outdoors and grew up a couple of kilometres down the road. “My dad won the grand final of the Young Farmer of the Year in 1993 and

placed second in the year prior and I always wanted to do him well.” Robert is a member of the Tikokino Young Farmers Club, and at 27 years old, his passion for the environment has won him several accolades. “We were finalists in the 2018 Balance Farm Environment Awards for East Coast winning the Predator Free 2050 and DairyNZ Sustainable Farming Award. In February, I was appointed the sustainability lead for the BEL Group, and I started the Tukipo Catchment Care Group last year with the aim of improving water quality and catchment management. ” Robert has experiences, such as fantails flitting above his head, as he inspects predator traps in a pristine bush block on a farm. covenant. “We have quite an extensive trapping programme, and the canopy of the bush is teeming with birds such as tui and fantail. The area is known to attract ferrets, stoats, weasels, rats, mice and occasionally possums, which prey on the birds and their eggs. I am using a trap developed by NZ Autotraps. They aren’t labour intensive and reset and rebait automatically, improving the kill rate of a range of predator species. “Prior to taking on the new role, I was second-in-charge on one of our dairy farms. I was always making suggestions to our leadership team about ways we could improve our practices. This new position is a great fit for me as I am passionate about improving dairying’s environmental footprint and not being in the milking shed every day gives me the opportunity to start implementing my ideas.” The business overhauled its wintering practices this year, aiming to reduce nitrate and sediment loss from crop paddocks. “Being smart about where you plant your winter crops and how you feed them can greatly reduce sediment run-off. It can be as simple as putting up a back fence or using a portable water trough to help reduce soil damage. Grazing sections of crop growing near waterways or at the bottom of slopes last helps trap suspended contaminants. “About 50 staff feed out to cows and young stock over the winter and shift crop fences. We have two full-time fencers to fence off small ephemeral drains. Legally we don’t need to fence them off, but the areas get wet and

Robert established the Tukipo Catchment Care Group to help improve water quality, biodiversity and the greenhouse gas footprint in the area

boggy in winter. The majority of the farms sit in the Tukipo River catchment, which has poor water quality and the river doesn’t have a large volume of freshwater flowing through it. It is fed by springs on surrounding farmland, so anything we do to keep livestock out of the springs makes a difference. “The Tukipo Catchment Care Group is focussed on improving water quality, biodiversity and our greenhouse gas footprint. “This year we have applied for and received $32,000 worth of funding from Fonterra to purchase water testing kits and to find potential wetland sites. Students at the local school are helping to grow native plants and trees for the newly-protected areas.”

BEL Group contributed $4,000 to help the school extend its shade house, which can now produce 1,000 riparian plants a year. Robert was recently elected to the NZ Young Farmers Board. “I had been thinking about standing for the board for the last two years. Nine people were vying for two elected positions and to be elected and have the support of my fellow members is an awesome feeling. I see joining the NZ Young Farmers Board as a unique opportunity for a young person to obtain governance experience. There aren’t many boards out there that have being under 31-years-old as a criteria, so it is an amazing opportunity, which I had to seize.”

Drones help economy Drones are estimated to be worth up to $7.9 billion to the economy with a paper recently released called Taking Flight: an aviation system for the automated age, which sets out the government’s vision for how drones can be better integrated into the current transport system to develop a thriving, innovative and safe sector. Transport Minister Phil Twyford said at the launch of the government’s plan for drones that drones will deliver economic benefits by doing tasks that are time-intensive, expensive and risky such as monitoring crops, inspecting power lines and helping with emergency operations. “New Zealand has an opportunity to be at the forefront of drone technology with sectors like forestry, agriculture and conservation already harnessing their abilities,” said Mr Twyford. “An example of the innovation that’s already underway is Zephyr Airworks, who have partnered with Air New Zealand to test and develop its self-piloted, electric air taxi here in New Zealand. There are already more than 77,000 drones in use in New Zealand, and our government knows that the public has concerns about privacy and safety. “Safety is our top transport priority, and there are a number of initiatives already underway, including looking at potential updates to the rules for using drones. The Ministry of Transport is currently consulting on potential new

powers for law enforcement agencies to seize or detain drones that are breaking the rules. “Our government is tackling the long-term issues, and we acknowledge getting the regulations right will take some time, but it’s important we take the time to get it right. “As well as identifying the benefits drones can deliver, Taking Flight also sets out the challenges we need to manage to unlock the benefits of drones and keep New Zealanders safe.”

Should I take coenzyme Q10? (Part two) We generally make all the coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) we need. Some, however, should take extra as a supplement. CoQ10 is made in your liver from the same enzymes that produce cholesterol. It is why drugs that reduce cholesterol can significantly reduce circulating CoQ10. I recently spoke to a client who had experienced a lot of muscle pain and stiffness while on statins. After just a month on high-grade CoQ10 (CoQsol), the pain had completely gone and is now able to tolerate the medication without side effects. I generally find it takes one to two months to restore muscle function and energy. Muscle issues from statin use are one of the most common reasons from muscle and tendon pain and weakness. It is a shame that many suffer needlessly, as in most cases, it is quickly resolved with a highquality CoQ10 without having to stop the medication. What makes CoQ10 unique is its ability to accept and donate electrons. That enables CoQ10 to

move hydrogen electrons within your cell mitochondria to make the energy your body requires. Inadequate CoQ10 levels reduce energy output, and this is felt as tiredness and often as muscle weakness. I regularly prescribe CoQ10 for those with health issues known to reduce energy, especially those with autoimmune or neurodegenerative problems. While CoQ10 is not a cure, it can help to lift general energy and wellbeing. In most cases, I will add CoQ10 as the patented CoQsol or my specialised MTQ10 formula for those needing extra CoQ10 plus a lift in energy. MTQ10 combines CoQ10 with a B complex plus other energy co-factors. Most people feel a real difference within one to two months. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Arrive Alive...

Don’t Drink and Drive

by Andy Bryenton

The barn or equipment shed has long been a vital component of any farming operation, keeping valuable machinery out of the weather or providing storage space for essentials such as feed and other consumables. In the past, most sheds have been relegated to secondary status due to a lack of electrical power. Working on machinery in situ used to mean lugging a generator, and upgrades to turn a simple shelter for equipment into a functioning workshop were almost out of the question. Developments in battery technology have led to innovative new ways to use solar and wind power, taking these applications from out of the realm of the ecologically conscious alone and into the domain of practical business. There are whole farms now off the grid and thriving. Photovoltaic systems fitted to a remote shed, therefore, can turn it into a hub for maintenance and repair without having to tax the electrical system of the farm itself. Lighting is the first advantage, redoubling workable hours in and around the shed. Security is another bonus, with low-drain remote security systems able to send a message to mobile devices and thus protect stores

of fuel and assets like motorcycles and quads. There’s even the possibility to run water to very remote outbuildings via solar-powered pumping stations. The power of the sun can be augmented by wind turbines or microhydroelectric systems placed in streams where applicable. With outlay costs for this kind of upgrade falling and the price of electricity still an issue of contention,

off-grid systems are also popular due to the fact that they can be applied piece by piece, taking over from mains power in specific applications. Now powerful enough and reliable enough to be used in industries such as telecommunication for long-term installations, it’s timely to weigh the cost of upgrading your shed or outbuilding the old-fashioned way or adopting new technology, which may save money in the long run.

Rural Building The backbone of your build There’s no question that farm buildings must be designed to survive in the worst possible conditions. The average farmer envisions a good shed or barn as lasting for decades, all while suffering the heat of summer and the rains and chills of winter without failing. So there’s a lot of debate as to what makes the perfect core structure for the perfect outbuilding. Effectively, the choice today centres around steel or wood. Both have their advantages, with proponents of each side making a convincing case. Modern building techniques have given us more choice than ever, and both options are attractive. So the decision can come down to factors other than simple price. The case for wood starts with the trees themselves. We grow them here, and a shed or barn built with full-round posts takes advantage of the structure of the whole tree itself, grown strong and designed by millions of years of evolution. Those who built in wood cite a long history of human use of this natural and sustainable product, which sequesters carbon from the air as it grows, and is easy to add on to with little more than more wood and some nails and know-how. They point to wooden barns built in places like the US and Europe before Captain Cook set sail for New Zealand, the frames of which, are still strong and aesthetically pleasing today, often incorporated into new builds. The argument for steel also emphasises strength; the term ‘strong as steel’ exists for a good reason, after all. This substance lends itself

06 879 6099 OR ELWYN 027 404 2535 to modular construction, with the ability to easily disassemble bolted subframes and sections to add on at a later date. Steel also has environmental credentials, which few people realise; it’s one of the few building materials that lose nothing from being recycled over and over again. Steel has a high recovery rate from demolished buildings, and recent research of commercial construction waste found that more than 90% of the steel was recycled. As for durability, those who build in steel can point to ancient swords and artefacts made by processes inferior to

HAWKES BAY BOBCATS

current forging techniques but are still with us thousands of years later. In the end, the choice comes down to location, intended use and simple aesthetics. There are excellent arguments for building both in wood and steel, but the real winner is the farmer seeking to build, who enjoys a world of choice and flexibility when selecting a structure that will last the test of time.

DAFFODIL DAY

FRIDAY 30TH AUGUST 2019

Three decades of community care by Andy Bryenton

“Standing with NZCS this Daffodil Day.”

Proud to support the search for a cure. 021 308 684 info@ct.net.nz

August 30 is Daffodil Day, the Cancer Society of New Zealand’s primary annual fundraiser, and a time to reflect on just how far we have come in the understanding, prevention and treatment of cancer during the past three decades. The first-ever Daffodil Day was in 1990, and this time 30 years ago plans were underway for just how to promote the good work that the NZCS does in the community. Reliant on funding from initiatives like this, the organisation covers a variety of roles, from counselling for patients and their families through to practical care, sun smart and smoke-free initiatives, and, of course, advocating for life-saving medical research. The daffodil, long held to be a herald of new life after the long winter, was chosen as an apt emblem for the new appeal, as its distinctive and cheerful colour gave the message; the Cancer Society is all about hope and positive change. In 2019, that promise is still coming true, donation by donation. Information for those diagnosed with cancer is getting out there. A helpline is up and running, NZCS representatives drive patients to their hospital visits with petrol paid for by donations. Schools educate kids about sun safety, and the number of smokers continues to

diminish. These are signposts on a road, which continues on, with the eventual destination being a cure for all forms of cancer. Medical science works slowly but inexorably, and there is no limit to human ingenuity. In the meantime, every bit of help counts this August 30.

FORESTRY

ADVERTORIAL

Managing local branches At the young age of 19, Vaughn Griffin embarked on a career in forestry, starting what has become a quarter-century of experience dealing with trees. From the forest to residential neighbourhoods, through to farms and orchards, the fully qualified arboriculture expert has seen, pruned and felled all types, big and small. Today, his Griffin Tree Services company can be found all through the Wairoa region, attending to the local foliage with a specialised set of tools and those double decades of expertise. Vaughn can remove deadwood and dangerous branches to make sure buildings and vehicles are safe, even during winter storms. He’s adept at pruning back to promote fruit growth, shaping and thinning the canopy to let light through, or, as is often necessary, the complete safe removal of whole trees. As well as the safety gear, harness, pruners and chainsaws you’d expect in his tool cabinet, Vaughn also has some other equipment in reserve. A powerful 4.7-tonne excavator comes in handy for those large jobs, and can even help with drain clearance or earthmoving. Then there’s his ever-hungry wood chipper, a robust trailer-mounted unit, which makes short work of scrubby branches and twigs. In fact, with all the tools on hand,
