“There’s a lot of stuff in our platform document, plenty for politicians and their advisers to read. In short, we are looking for a government that commits to building a solid foundation for the future of New Zealand’s agricultural industries,” says Federated Farmers president Andrew Hoggard. “Pretty much everyone, MPs of every political stripe included, have acknowledged the primary sector will be at the forefront of helping our economy recover from the Covid-19 fallout. However, ill-thought-out government policies and investment decisions hinder rather than help that mission. “Our platform clearly outlines the priorities for our sector as we see them. It gives farmers and rural residents pointers to important questions to ask at candidate meetings and key issues to evaluate which party to vote for.” The eight-point plan for creating a solid platform for a prosperous agricultural sector and thriving rural communities includes: • High-quality and reliable infrastructure for rural businesses

• HASTINGS • NAPIER

Household emissions are nine times less than industrial emissions but have grown by 9.4 per cent since 2007, while industrial emissions since 2007 have reduced by 8.7 per cent. “Hawke’s Bay is not a big contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in New Zealand terms. However, this information helps us as we build a clear picture of climate change and what we can and should do in our region to reduce its effects. Since 2007, we’ve seen a 7.1 per cent decrease in greenhouse gas emission across Hawke’s Bay overall, which is great to see,” says HBRC chief executive James Palmer. “During the same time, agriculture, which accounts for 74 per cent of the region’s emissions, has decreased by 10.5 per cent, reflecting the work of our rural and primary production sector to improve their own good management practices. “These results add another layer of knowledge to our developing work plan on the climate crisis where the regional council is already working on the coastal hazards strategy, tree planting and erosion control, energy use, providing public transport and

cycleways, measuring and reducing our corporate footprint, and more.” The Stats NZ report found that twothirds of New Zealand’s regions recorded decreases in their total greenhouse gas emissions, while one-third of regions saw increases between 2007 and 2018. A reduction of emissions in some regions was largely offset by increased

emissions in other regions. Overall, the result was a reduction of one per cent in New Zealand’s total greenhouse gas emissions between 2007 and 2018. To find out more, go to stats.govt. nz or head to hbrc.govt.nz and search #climatechange.

NECESSITY BRINGS UNITY BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

an is the stock manager of the farm we are on, and I work off-farm as a financial controller in Martinborough. We have a mix of pre-lamb ewes, lamb fattening, a few cows and beef and the farm also has an arable side to it,” says Sophie. “We come from Hawke’s Bay, and a good friend lives in the Sheridan district. In mid-April, early May they said their dams were empty, and it looked like the middle of summer. It could have been us in the drought predicament, but 250mm of rainfall saved us.

“Dan follows the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners on Facebook. They had 100 road trains rolling through outback Australia before the bush fires with feed for farmers. They never had any government funding — they just did it. It was amazing to watch. We decided to follow their lead and help a few people in Hawke’s Bay. “The feed was donated by more than 120 farmers in the Wairarapa. Everything from lifestyle block owners to business owners, real estate and stock agents and contractors gave one or two bales through to a whole unit.” The initiative grew much larger than Dan and Sophie ever imagined. “We had no idea that it would end up such an inspirational story. The traction it gained was amazing. The feed was delivered to two yards and distributed by the Rural Support Trust in Hawke’s Bay on our behalf. They are on the ground talking to farmers every day in the various areas and help when there is stress. They also hear from other farmers that someone needs help, so it made sense to partner with them. “Some people only needed five bales to get them through until their feed arrived, and some needed 10. It depended on each situation. Some

needed short-term help, but others needed to survive winter and get their ewes fed. We have no contact with the farmers we help, but they are extremely thankful. “More than 160 people helped out. The drivers donated their time, drivers and fuel. We covered some road user charges to help some out. Some are

contractors in the Wairarapa who have no connection at all to Hawke’s Bay. It could cost them $2,000 for the day, but they helped. There are so many transport companies that came forward, such as Reisima Haulage and Martinborough Transport. They did so much work behind the scenes. They picked up bales around the Wairarapa

People wrote inspiring messages on the bails of hay and silage to show their support and encourage the farmers in their time of need

and took them to the yard and on to Hawke’s Bay. We couldn’t have done it without them — not a chance. “The Rural Support Trust has been brilliant to work with and do such essential work with little funding. It has been nice to help them out and take pressure off them as well, by giving them another resource to provide feed for animals. “We use the analogy ‘we are all in the same storm but just in different boats’. That summarises it for everyone. There are so many variants in farming, and everyone is impacted in different ways. “Other people started the initiative in other regions, and that has been amazing to see. “Trucks came from across the North Island including Taranaki, Te Puke, Manawatu and Mahia. units forwarded hay and baleage from Canterbury. “It has become a positive national concept, and we are so thankful to everyone who donated. Even local contractors and machinery shops lent us tractors for the yards. “It is amazing. We have photos of children running around the bales that people wrote messages on for the trip. Everyone put a lot of time and thought into the encouraging words they wrote. “If you are a farmer in the middle of winter, raining and cold and you have no grass but go out and see an uplifting message on the bale, you know someone is out there thinking of you and willing to help you. That has been one of our favourite parts of the Rapa Feed Run. What love that it became a real farming community event.”

EU Demonstrates Why Brexit Had to Happen

by Sir Lockwood Smith

New Zealand is currently negotiating a trade agreement with the EU. It’s taking a while. That’s not surprising given the EU’s penchant for bureaucratic procedures. First a preliminary political agreement had to be agreed and signed. Called the Partnership Agreement on Relations and Cooperation, negotiations commenced in 2012. It was signed four years later in 2016. Then, the EU had to go through a lengthy process of establishing its negotiating mandate for the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) now being negotiated. You might think after all that, they could come up with a sensible offer on trade in goods for New Zealand.

The insult they dished up on meat and dairy products, seemed to surprise some, including trade minister, Hon David Parker. I must say, I wasn’t surprised at all. While both agriculture and international trade minister during the 1990s, I beat my head against the brick walls of the EU many times. Seared into my mind was their performance at Seattle in 1999, when the World Trade Organisation was trying to launch what became known as the DOHA

Trade Round. I was chairing one of the four main working groups. The EU representative was the most unhelpful person I have ever encountered in 33 years of public life. On behalf of the EU, he stonewalled every attempt to solve problems related to the issues we were dealing with. The EU is inherently protectionist when it comes to trade. It’s one of the main reasons why the United Kingdom, for the sake of its economic future, had to get out. The centre of gravity for global economic growth has moved to the Asia-Pacific region. The UK’s trade was growing far more rapidly there than

within the EU. Post Covid-19, that’s not going to change. To add injury to the recent insult, the EU sought from New Zealand the protection of more than 2,000 so-called geographic indicators (GIs). Some of these, such as champagne and burgundy, are well accepted. But 2,000 others — really? In many ways, GIs are a form of protectionism. Consequently, they risk an industry’s future as the focus on quality can be lost. In my four years as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, I never tasted a French burgundy to match an Atarangi or Felton

Road Block 3 Pinot Noir. The UK is now also negotiating a free trade agreement with the EU. The EU’s lead negotiator, Michel Barnier, has accused the UK of failing to engage substantially. Yet, they’ve tabled a draft agreement. I’ve seen it. It seems pretty sensible, although in some areas such as rules of origin, it’s far more bureaucratic than we would expect, but then, it probably has to be for the EU. The biggest prize from Brexit for the UK is its ability to now negotiate trade agreements globally, without the deadweight of EU bureaucratic processes. It needs to ensure they are quality agreements and New Zealand’s being one of the first out of the starting blocks will help with that. The EU was once a common market. That’s of course what Britain joined in 1973. But, the Maastricht Treaty of 1992 changed all of that. It facilitated the goal of ever closer political union, something Britain was never going to be fully comfortable with. It’s just a shame the focus didn’t stay on creating the greatest common market in the world, focussed on advancing global trade liberalisation that has proven such a potent pathway to raising people out of poverty. Sadly, as revealed by the recent trade offer to New Zealand, the EU is not that. And that’s why the world can benefit so much from the United Kingdom being able to step up to that trade leadership role. At the same time as negotiating its FTA with New Zealand, the UK will seek to join the Trans Pacific Partnership.

That should bring the dynamism of the Asia-Pacific region to the doorstep of Europe. With it will come the winds of change. The world needs a more dynamic EU — one that doesn’t think that trade access for 3 grams of NZ cheese per person in the EU, not even tariff free, is a reasonable offer to make when NZ already accepts a kilogram of EU cheese, tariff free, for every New Zealander.

Northland Rescue Helicopter pilot and sculpture artist Sue Dinkelacker has established a club for people who have used or been rescued by the emergency services helicopters. “The Haast Club is a way to signify the importance of the choppers missions and its patients. An essential to make energy by John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med)

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance essential for life. While we usually make all the CoQ10 we need, some people because of age, health problems or medications can benefit from taking extra good-quality CoQ10. Part one CoQ10 is essential to make the energy our bodies need. The final stage of making energy needs CoQ10 to shuttle the hydrogen needed to generate energy. If your levels of CoQ10 are low, this can be felt as low energy, weak muscles and general fatigue. CoQ10 is also an exceptional antioxidant protecting cells and fats from free radicals. The most important antioxidant function is to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol as it circulates in the body. It is a critical part of our natural defences against blockages in heart arteries and other blood vessels. Possibly the most common reason for CoQ10 supplementation is for those using cholesterol-lowering (statin) medication. The side effects of statins are so common that they are a diagnosable disease called statin myopathy. The most common side effects are muscle stiffness, pain and weakness. It can also cause general fatigue, which often feels like a lack of motivation. Statins effectively inhibit the enzyme needed to make cholesterol. Unfortunately,

this enzyme (HMG-CoA reductase) is also needed to make CoQ10. Blocking this enzyme reduces cholesterol but also CoQ10 by as much as 50 per cent. Drug companies are well aware of this problem and hold patents for combining CoQ10 with statins. Until such drugs are available, I recommend those on statins supplement with 100–200mg of naturally fermented CoQ10. Be aware that our retail market is now flooded with lower grade semi-synthetic CoQ10 usually sold in higher doses at much lower prices. Adding a good CoQ10 alongside stains will in most cases protect against and often reverse existing statin side effects. My favourite is the well-researched and patented US product CoQsol. Now technology means a rest for nature and new building materials for homes and buildings tend to be more eco-friendly and cost-effective, but wood still has a place — only it’s been tweaked a bit. Laminated timber is prefabricated wood, and it can also support high-rise buildings as well as humble homes. There’s also a quantum leap forward in a glass substitute, a ceramic alloy that is almost twice as strong as the jewel known as sapphire and can’t corrode. It is used to make stronger windows for homes, apart from uses in aviation and undersea exploration. The cost of electricity never goes down, and many new builds in New Zealand today are using solar panels. However, huge solar arrays are not really

Wood framing still has a place in building

needed when you can use new unseen solar cells that produce power in building materials for doors and windows. Another innovation is 100 per cent recyclable aluminium foam, produced when air is infused with molten metal to produce a strong and lightweight cladding material. However, wood is still alive — this time as ‘translucent wood.’ It provides high insulation properties, and it is biodegradable. You can use the wood in solar panels, on windows as replacements for glass because the treated wood is 90 per cent transparent. Moreover, alongside these modern innovations, there are building materials

that have stood the test of time and are also environmentally desirable. Wool bricks are a mix of wool and seaweed, and they do not need firing like traditional bricks. Earthen materials like adobe bricks and rammed earth have been used for construction since the beginning of time. Rammed earth instead of concrete is a sort of manmade rock that’s formed by compressing earth, gravel, whatever is to hand. Baled straw has great insulating properties, and its materials make a wall almost completely soundproof. Plain old stone covers a wide range of uses from flooring, walls and decorative use.

Rural Building/sheds & shelters Not just a man cave by Paul Campbell

A man’s shed is his man cave, some say, but a shed can be a boon for any family. It’s in effect another useful room on the house, with a strong storage function as well as a workplace for the handyman. On rural properties, of course, the farm shed caters for a multitude of jobs.

Tucked under a tree might seem a good idea until the sun seems a stranger. A bright and airy outlook is to be desired. Most importantly, a building inspector will establish how far your site is from property lines, streets, driveway and sidewalks, houses, septic tanks and leach fields, et cetera. If you plan to go down the DIY road, you’ll need to have the right tools. With building supply outlets around the country, there’s no problem with selection. Many of these outlets have knowledgeable staff only too happy to advise on equipment and materials. Once you are geared up to go, the most important factor to be decided is the foundations of the new enterprise. Most sheds can be supported by concrete blocks or treated wooden pilings, but pouring a concrete pad foundation makes for a commitment to permanence. If, of course, the DIY

Like everything else in the building code world, size will be important as it will dictate what permits may be required from the local council. In many cases in New Zealand, a shed becomes a home build project, while there are quite a number of kitset and ready-built options on the market. Once the design is decided upon, permits applied for and in the case of an extensive rural facility, probably a building contractor lined up — a shed site needs selection, again in a rural context there will be several choices. It would seem simple enough, but a lack of forethought can prove one’s undoing. Don’t build in a low-lying area where water collects and access becomes a wet weather worry. If the shed is wanted for regular activities, woodwork, maintenance and the like, look at the light available.

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

SPOTLIGHT ON A legacy built on rail by Andy Bryenton

There’s still some dispute as to how the city of Hastings got its name. However, we know the exact date when a puzzled editor of the Hawke’s Bay Herald reported the ‘christening’ to his readership. “The name of the new town is to be Hastings. We hear this now for the first time,” read the report on June 7 1873. There’s even an argument about who chose the name, why, and what it was called beforehand. Today Hastings is no mystery. It’s a heritage town of New Zealand, twinned in many minds with neighbouring Napier and sporting its own distinctive style. Artist Rita Angus, writer Alan Duff, media personality Paul Holmes and racing legend Greg Murphy have all called this place home. Lucky, then, that it didn’t retain its early monicker of Hicksville, as these and other famous Kiwis may have faced a bit of predictable humour. Francis Hicks was a real historical figure, who was one of the twelve ‘apostles’

(actually farmers and businessmen) who bought the land that’s now Hastings from Thomas Tanner, the original European settler in the area. Tanner claims to have picked the name after the government of the day decided to extend a railway line, vital for farming and industry, south via a new junction on the Heretaunga Plains. The rails pushed through to Port Ahuriri, suddenly making Hick’s land a prime spot for those in the export trade. Tanner jumped in and somehow convinced Wellington to name

HASTINGS the settlement Hastings, though not after the famous battle, but after a personal hero of his, the dashingly militant leader of British India during the era of Napoleon, Warren Hastings. Of course, with cities in New Zealand popping up all over with the names of heroes of the Napoleonic Wars (Wellington chief among them), it was felt to be a fine tribute. That railway line and access to export proved to be the making of Hastings. Edward Newbigin delighted thirsty Kiwis when he emigrated from Newcastle, England, learned the brewer’s trade and went on to found his own Hastings brewery in 1881. The master brewer was said to have increased the production Warren Hastings defended India against Napoleon’s of the amber suds threefold and French armies, but never actually visited the town was also a long time patron of the named for him in New Zealand town’s bowling club. However, the most famous captain Hawke’s Bay to the world ended up of export to be born in Hastings is still feeding a nation. There’s likely to be no assuredly James Wattie, who founded one at all in New Zealand who hasn’t a cannery and food processing empire had a Wattie’s product on their plate at some point in their lives, let alone the there in 1934. What began with a railway line to crimson tomato sauce that some say is boost agriculture and open up the synonymous with citizenship.

HASTINGS

Land of the rolling vines by Andy Bryenton

The lush countryside around Hastings may be the mirror reflection of the fabled wine countries of northern Italy, or California’s Napa and Sonoma valleys on top. That’s because of utterly unique geology and soils below, giving the wine here a refreshingly local twist. There’s no need to travel the world to experience the very pinnacle of the vintner’s art; heaven may be just around the corner. The Hastings region is home to New Zealand’s oldest vines and the oldest tradition on these shores of turning grapes into fine wines. While other regions have grown in size since the 1990s, the very doorstep of Hastings still boasts some 4,680 hectares under viticultivation with 41,000 tonnes of grapes harvested in 2018 alone. That’s more than 10 per cent of the nation’s production. Still, a combination of climate, geology and a formidable ‘brains trust’ of master vintners there means that quality stacks up over quantity, to the advantage of the travelling taster. Names like Mission Estate and Church Road will likely be recognised

by those who enjoy a Kiwi drop, but there are in excess of 31 wineries offering tastings at the cellar door within a short drive of Hastings. It’s the reds, which garnered instant appeal for this area. To this day distinct subregions like the Gimblett Gravels and the Bridge Pa Triangle are noted for their red wines. However, those who seek Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc varieties to try won’t be disappointed. Local restaurateurs have lost no time in pairing up regional delicacies with the abundance of characterful wines on offer. Expect to find some distinctive matches on offer as you browse the menus.

Top-class red wines from Hastings caught the attention of the world, though today there’s a vintage there for every food match and every palate

Those travelling to Hastings need not be outright connoisseurs of fine wine to enjoy the experience of a tour around the cellar doors. A particular treat in summer is to meander between

several nearby wineries by bicycle or to take advantage of the coastal vineyard setting to appreciate some angling — followed by matching your fresh catch with a bottle of something special.

SPOTLIGHT ON

HASTINGS

On the fish hook of Maui by Andy Bryenton

They were flying here long before the first waka reached New Zealand shores, and they have become the most prolific residents of the Hastings area, with more than 3,000 families packed into cramped accommodation on one of the wildest seashores in the North Island. They are, of course, Hastings’s famous seabirds, the gannets of Cape Kidnappers, and they make remarkable neighbours to their curious human hosts. The colony at the cape fascinates ornithologists and tourists alike. It’s thought that Cape Kidnappers is also known in Te Reo Maori as ‘Te Kauwae a Maui’ after the legendary bone hook used by the demigod to fish up the North Island, and it’s fish which attract the gannets in their thousands. Pairs form monogamous bonds, mating year after year until one of the pair perishes. They gather on the steep cliffs to build cone-shaped nests of seaweed and debris; really just cups to prevent their eggs rolling off into the sea. The gannets were prized by preEuropean Maori, who used their striking white feathers as adornments for both their cloaks, their hair and their seagoing waka. More importantly, the fine and easily sharpened bones of the gannet were perfect for the practitioners

of the traditional art of moko, as they could be fashioned into manual tattoo needles. For most of pre-European history gannets failed to flock to the headland near Hastings. They began to arrive in the 1850s, when 100 breeding pairs were counted. Now their numbers have exploded, as the gannets have very few enemies and are largely untroubled by the proximity of humans. Instead, they spend their time practising one of nature’s ultimate high dive routines. Gannets can spot squid and small schooling fish metres underwater from a height of 20 metres in the air, and when they do, they fold up to become a water-piercing ‘missile’, wings tucked back and bill poised to strike. Their grace in capturing prey is matched by the elaborate dances they use to establish their space on the

spreading their wings, touching beaks and preening each other’s feathers in an elaborate ritual. Tourists flock to see the colony in usual years, though this year, with Covid-19 closing the borders, it’s a good time for locals to catch a glimpse of one of the country’s natural wonders.

DAFFODIL DAY

FRIDAY 28TH AUGUST 2020

Yellow the colour of hope by Andy Bryenton

The daffodil is the symbol for one of our nation’s most well known charitable fundraisers, the annual drive for the Cancer Society of New Zealand. To carry on their good work in Kiwi communities, looking after the families of people battling cancer and the wellbeing of patients themselves, this hard-working not-for-profit organisation hits the streets to raise money and awareness. Why the daffodil, though? How has this yellow bloom come to signify the push for research into one of the modern world’s most pervasive illnesses, and why was it chosen to represent Friday, August 28, Daffodil Day? The cheerful yellow bloom of the daffodil comes out at the turning of the seasons, as winter’s cold and rain turn to spring. Thus, several cultures held the flower sacred in ancient times, from the Egyptians to the Hebrews and, of course, the Greeks, who associated the flower with the demigod Narcissus. In their legends, the yellow daffodils grew on the earthly side of the river Styx, beyond which lay the afterlife. Daffodils were significant as a flower associated with returning from illness or injury, therefore; it’s said they reminded spirits of the joys of the living world and made them turn back, returning to their friends and family. In Wales, the daffodil is the symbol of the nation’s patron saint, St David,

a real-life sixth-century holy man who founded peaceful monasteries during a time of almost constant warfare, preserving literacy and knowledge of healing. The daffodil was also sacred to Eostre, the fertility Goddess of Rome from whom we take the name of the Easter holiday. In China, the daffodil is a symbol of hope and new life and is associated with the celebration of the new year. With all of these worldwide traditions supporting the impression of the daffodil as a flower of regeneration after winter, it’s no surprise that the Cancer Society chose it as an emblem for their own works. Their mission is centred on fostering hope, both in individuals fighting cancer and in society as a whole that a cure can be found through science and research. When you see the collectors out there this year with their bright yellow flowers, think of all the people through

history who have also waited for the daffodil to herald the coming of spring. Year after year, the flowers never let them down; just as the Cancer Society continues to honour its pledge and support those in our communities fighting this illness today.
