The original homestead before it was demolished and rebuilt in 1981

“I am originally from Hawke’s Bay and feel lucky to be living back here, bringing up our children on the farm. We both have family close by, so we have a lot of support around, which is always helpful when raising children,” Katie says. “I went to Otago University and did my teacher’s training here. I was formerly a teacher, and now Omatua is my full-time job. I loved working with children, but it is great, because a lot of children come through Omatua, and I still get to engage with them. “The opportunity arose when we purchased the property from the Girl Guides and have been slowly making improvements and have been running it since 2019 — just before Covid. We had to be flexible, and we made it work. “It is nice hearing other people’s stories. Often when I show people around who haven’t been here for years, they are amazed at the differences and improvements. It helps to keep the history alive when they tell those stories.” Omatua has many stories itself. The original homestead was built by Captain Anderson in 1861, and it survived both the 1863 and 1931 earthquakes that shook the Hawke’s Bay. Frank and Amy Hutchinson bought the property in 1907, and when Miss Jerome Spencer stayed there with Amy, the idea of the Country Women’s Institute was conceived.

By 1953, Omatua was leased to the Girl Guides at the request of Rosemary Absolom, who was a guide leader. In 1961, Dick and Rosemary Absolom gifted Omatua to the Hawke’s Bay Girl Guides with five acres of land. The original homestead was demolished in 1979 and rebuilt in 1981 before reopening in 1982. “It is nestled in the valley of Rissington beside the Mangaone River with five acres of gardens and lawns. It is tranquil and peaceful with lots of wildlife and native birdlife — tūī, kererū and all sorts. “Many of the original trees are still standing that were planted there many years ago. It is very rural, and we are lucky to have the river there too. “The rural setting draws people to the property. It has the feeling of getting away and retreating from the busy, fast-paced life we are living now, and the fact that large groups can stay together is a bonus. The homestead can accommodate 48 people, and there is additional room for tents and motorhomes. Katie says most guests self-cater, but catering can be arranged. “I would love to continue to see guests enjoying the place and to experience our little part of paradise. “Families and friends come here to stay together, cook together and enjoy each other’s company and really feel connected. We do a lot of celebrations, weddings, gettogethers and schools come through too.”

New trail developments

The Rotary River Pathway Trust has built tracks alongside the Tukituki River between Waipukurau and Waipawa for the community to enjoy. It has grown, and new projects have recently been completed.

A family enjoying the mountain bike trails along the Tukituki River beside the old swing bridge that is due to be rebuilt due to flooding

“There are another 20 kilometres of limestone trail running upstream from Waipukurau completed recently. Inside those trails are mountain bike and walking trails,” says Rotary River Pathway Trust chairman Roy Fraser. “One of the prime reasons, other than providing the trails for local people to use, was to attract people from outside the district to visit and add some economic benefit for our community. We have seen that, and it is very rewarding.” Following the original tracks, more were built on the opposite side of the river, and a swing bridge to join them, creating a loop. Recent flooding has washed away the bridge, and they are planning to rebuild it.

The trust also created the Gum Tree Farm Mountain Bike Park. It was previously bought by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council to spray treated sewage from the oxidation ponds system but was left unused and leased to RRPT. “It has all machine-built flow trails with a range of difficulty and has become very popular and continues growing as we expand the number of kilometres within the park.” Mountain bike and walking trails are also constructed alongside the limestone walking tracks, and there is a river berm route for bikers and walkers. “It has been an immensely positive experience for all the trustees to see how

Many people gather to take part in the various bike trails RRPT has established in the Central Hawke’s Bay area

it has grown beyond their original idea. All people involved are incredibly passionate and have contributed a huge amount of work where they could to save funds in preference to hiring contractors. We have used local resources where we could, and now we have an amazing asset at a pretty low cost. “We now have approximately 32 kilometres of easy riding limestone trail, 45 kilometres of berm single track trails and 17 kilometres of flow trails in the mountain bike park.” Roy says he appreciates the Central Hawke’s Bay District Council, the Provincial Growth Fund, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and all the community supporters and funders for their efforts

and support. The tracks are maintained by locals. “The community has been right behind us from day one. The real pleasing thing is that the trail usage level is really high by both locals and many from outside the district. “I personally am a mountain biker, but the beauty of our system is there is a wide variety — for smooth and easy riding on the limestone trails, cross country in the river berm, and for flowing downhill trails there is the mountain bike park. “For people anywhere in the country or the world that want to experience these various trails, come to the beautiful Central Hawke’s Bay.”

CREATING

L U F S S E C SUC Wayne Forrest has found two passions in his life — agriculture and helping others. He went from farm boy to life mastery consultant following a sports injury that led him on a 27-year journey filled with struggle, encouragement and growth.

“M

y accident, in 1995, I dislocated my neck playing rugby, which sent me on a different path. I was a sheep shearer and farmer, shearing about 300 sheep a day. I was a very physical and hands-on sort of a guy. Farming was my first love from a very early age, and I was brought up on a farm,” says life mastery coach Wayne. “That accident changed my trajectory, but can take the farm boy off of the farm, not the farm from the farm boy. I went

back to the farm with a clear goal of running it again. It took a few years, but once I achieved that, it wasn’t enough.” With a thirst for more, Wayne sought out extreme outdoor activities — white water rafting, scuba diving, paragliding and canoeing. “I wasn’t sure I would have been able to do it because of my lack of balance from the neck injury. It opened my eyes up to facing my fears and what could happen from doing that. “I got so involved in the NZ Back-Up Trust, and I enjoyed helping other people see that they were capable of more than what they saw. That is how I fell into selfA

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

Wayne Forrest working in the farming industry, that he loves, before his accident

“The voice of not being enough put me in the wheelchair, and I suffered in silence. I had to learn to be a different farmer, husband and father. I cannot be silent.” “Struggle is there for a reason, and I help people to find the message in the energy of discontentment and a longing for their dreams. In between those two things is where we are meant to go. Our thoughts create our feelings, and it affects us, and our actions create results. “If we become more aware of what we are thinking about instead of focussing on

circumstances, we can create what we want in life. I had a real challenge to overcome, and it has sent me on a different path.” Wayne shared his journey and ideas at a TEDx event in 2020. He spoke about how everyone faces adversity in life which is the potential to help people learn and grow. “It is amazing what creates reality. Did you know everything has been created twice? It starts with a thought and then is created by form. “I teach people to create by design instead of by default. Many people don’t

have a vision of what they want to live. Our pattern of thinking controls our lives. If we want success on the farm and we are not getting it; it is because we have created a pattern that has blocked a solution. “It is the same with farming, be open to thinking differently. Farming is going to have to evolve the way the world is going. Ask different questions and be curious because, as Anthony Robbins said — the quality of your life is a direct reflection of the quality of the questions you are asking yourself.

“Be curious and willing to ask questions. Question everything because we are taught not to anymore. Teach your children to question all beliefs; we want people to have curious minds. I often say to my children that the day I get called into the principal’s office for questioning is the day I’m going to be the proudest. They want to find the truth. “People need a voice, and I do not want anyone to suffer in silence. You never know what the impact is, but if it is unsaid, then you’ll never know what could be.”

JULY 2022 HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

A SLICE IN THE WHEEL BY AMY FIFITA

Hōhepa Hawke’s Bay won the inaugural Countdown Sustainability Award at the 2022 NZ Champion of Cheese Awards last month in Hamilton.

“T

he Hōhepa Trust was initially established in 1956 to support people with intellectual disabilities inspired by work by Rudolf Steiner,” says Hōhepa Hawke’s Bay general manager Santiago De Marco. “From the beginning, we had an operating farm to provide people with work opportunities and generate additional income.

We operate curtainsiders, tippers and flatdecks to meet all your general and bulk cartage requirements. “We have always made a goal for sustainability, and we didn’t do it to win an award. It aligns with our vision, mission and values. We are really humbled by the recognition, and we acknowledge that we are going in the right direction. “We are the oldest registered biodynamic farm in New Zealand, and have organic and demeter certification. “Sustainability is one of our core values, and for many years we have placed a great deal of value in trying to manage our impact on the environment and to be very conscious of the way we operate and run the business.

Santiago De Marco has been working in Hōhepa for 23 years and says he has fallen in love with New Zealand, Hawke’s Bay and Hōhepa Hawke’s Bay

“We approach everything from four pillars. A quadruple bottom line framework where we look at the cultural, economic, environmental and social impact of everything we do.” Every year, the organisation focusses on new sustainability initiatives such as currently installing solar panels. Santiago says that Hōhepa is actively looking at ways to reduce its impact on the environment.

“Last year, we developed the cheese packaging that is home compostable — it decomposes within 12 weeks. Before that, we moved away from selling our milk in plastic bottles. We developed a milk bottling facility so we could put the milk in glass bottles. People can bring their bottles back and get a new glass of milk.

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

Hōhepa Hawke’s Bay won the inaugural Countdown Sustainability Award at this year’s Champion of Cheese Awards for its initiatives and values surrounding its impact on the environment

“These are some of our sustainability initiatives that the judges found inspiring and what made them want to recognise our work by giving us this special award.” As a whole, Hōhepa Hawke’s Bay runs more than its sustainable farm. Santiago says it has a woodwork shop that provides long-lasting wooden toys and outdoor furniture for many generations to enjoy. “We run a school for young people with intellectual disabilities, a tree nursery, wetland reforestation projects, a beeswax candle enterprise and a weavery. It provides residential services for 180 people with intellectual disabilities and employs 620 staff members across its various enterprises, and is one of Hawke’s Bay’s biggest employers.

“We have a project under Jobs For Nature, planting 30,000 trees that we have created from seed from the old forest and people with disabilities are fully involved in that. “Hōhepa is more than a farm. It is a holistic business where people are supported across all stages of life, from children to elderly. The farm is one of the enterprises that add value to the people we support by working the land and producing food. There is significant value added to the wider community. “Our vision is ‘every life fully lived’ — the whole thing about celebrating people, celebrating whenua and celebrating the community.

The farm is the oldest registered biodynamic farm in New Zealand

“We have about 60 cows in our dairy operation and we milk twice a day. We opened the cheesery in the 80s, and since then, we have been creating awardwinning cheeses. This year we won six awards at the cheese awards in Hamilton. “On the farm, we collect compost and waste from about 100 facilities, and we use it to go into fertile soil to go on our land. “Being involved in Hōhepa is a bit of a lifestyle because of our way of

doing things. Our purpose and vision are very strong, and it will take us into the future. “My family and I come from South America. I am from Argentina, and my wife is from Brazil. We came to New Zealand to work at Hōhepa Hawke’s Bay 23 years ago. We were meant to come for three years, but we absolutely fell in love with New Zealand, Hawke’s Bay and the Hōhepa community. We chose to stay and made it our life work.”

Learning equestrian skills

by Amy Fifita

Flaxmere Pony Club holds rallies and teaches children of various ages about horse and pony care and riding. “Pony Club is about how to manage ponies, not just the fun stuff and not just the riding. There are certificates on lead, off lead, and then we go through a D Certificate all the way up to A,” acting president Amy Harvey says. Amy started her passion for ponies at FPC, and is followed by her daughter who joined at five years old. “We lived in Hastings, and we rented the paddock around the corner. Mum used to take us to Pony Club every fortnight to learn about management and did local shows. I used to do hunting and the local gymkhanas.” Learners get put into groups of six with one coach to learn about the disciplines involved in riding. Amy says one of the challenges is getting coaches and that they need to understand the Pony Club Manual and the new knowledge in treatment. “They are very interesting creatures. The kids love it and love riding with their friends and learning at the same time. We don’t just have rallies at our home ground.

“It is great seeing them develop. You see these kids that are nervous, and you see them months or a year later, and they are jumping and confident. To be able to give back is time and energy, and we all do it for the kids. “A big part of our club is the Christmas Gymkhana, and every year we try to take the kids away to camp. For the last four years, we have taken them to the equestrian park in Taupō, and we go away for four days.” The club is under the Heretaunga Pony Club with many riders from FPC, trying to qualify to be part of the Heretaunga team for eventing. “It is a really big achievement if you get to do that. My daughter is trialling for the show hunter, and heaps of Flaxmere riders have done it in the past. “The young children look up to the older riders. We have bigger girls representing as the younger ones come through and have these goals and idols in front of them. “We’ve got two girls who received trophies from the Hawke’s Bay Area Pony Club for eventing — Anna Devescovi

Flaxmere Pony Club is a place to learn and hone riders’ skills and knowledge about horses and ponies

and Carys McCrory. This is such a great achievement for Flaxmere Pony Club. “Anna competed in the 95-centimetre eventing competition and Carys at the A1 level (1.10m). Eventing requires talent in showjumping, dressage and cross country. “Every eventing season has ups and downs, but this was my best season. I had fun on and off my horses, and the support around me was outstanding. I was lucky to have Dark Secret, a 13-yearold black warmblood cross gelding, to ride,” Anna says.

ADVERTORIAL

Milk your summer crop for all it’s worth

Sow the right chicory this spring, and even if the season turns dry later, you can still give your cows leafy, delicious summer grazing. Plus, you’ll save thousands on palm kernel, with less worry about volatile prices. It’s all to do with fast establishment, high yield and a deep tap root that keeps 501 Chicory lush and green when ryegrass turns brown. Your cows will thank you. You’ll sleep better at night, knowing home-grown feed is much cheaper than truckloads of supplements. Irresistible eating Cows love 501 Chicory — it’s tasty and easy to eat and good for them, too. Energy-rich, full of protein and packed with macro and micronutrients, it can be digested quickly, so they spend more time ruminating. Plus, it’s safe to graze when facial eczema makes grass high risk, and you don’t have to worry about bloat. Graze early — earn more 501 Chicory is an annual, so it jumps out of the ground faster than perennial cultivars, and is ready to graze sooner. That gives up to one more full grazing than other chicories or as much as 550kg extra dry matter per ha. At a payout of $9kgMS milksolids, that equates to a potential gain of $450ha, and unlike supplement you don’t need any machinery to feed

“In research trials, cows grazing chicory excreted significantly less nitrogen every time they urinated.”

it out or rely on suppliers to deliver it, either. Mineral miner That big tap root doesn’t just help 501 Chicory keep growing in dry weather — it also mines the soil for excess minerals like nitrogen and potassium. Sow it on your effluent blocks, and after grazing, your cows will happily help redistribute those essential nutrients

more evenly back around the rest of the farm. Leach less We hear a lot about plantain’s potential to mitigate nitrogen loss, but science has shown us chicory can be equally helpful. In research trials, cows grazing chicory excreted significantly less nitrogen every time they urinated, reducing the nitrogen

load in the urine patch compared to ryegrass clover pasture. With urine patches major contributors to nitrogen loss from grazed systems, averaging 700kg/ha nitrogen per urination in traditional pastoral farming, this is a key benefit for 501 Chicory. Give your grass a rest Hot, dry summers can be hard on your existing pastures, especially if you aren’t able to protect them from over-grazing. Paddocks of 501 Chicory are the ideal antidote. When you graze these, you’re not only looking after your cows, you’re also giving stressed ryegrass a break so it can bounce back faster after rain. What next? Contact your seed rep today. Winter is usually a busy time for healthcare providers. However, this season is already looking challenging, with high numbers of influenza circulating in the community alongside Covid-19. Medical Officer of Health Dr Nick Jones says it’s important people make sure they’re up-to-date with all their vaccinations, including Covid-19, flu and measles, to avoid getting very unwell and potentially needing hospital-level care this winter. “The flu jab is available now at your GP, pharmacy or hauora provider and is free for pregnant women, Māori and Pasifika people age 55 and over, everyone 65 and over, children ages 3–12 years and people with some long-term medical conditions and children under four who have been in hospital with respiratory illness such as asthma.”

Dr Jones says the opening of New Zealand’s borders will see more viruses reappear, increasing the risk of a measles outbreak in the community. “Measles is a highly contagious disease which affects both children and adults and can be life-threatening. The most effective protection is two doses of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccination. Talk to your GP, nurse or pharmacist to make sure you and your family are up-todate with your vaccinations.” As well as vaccination, Dr Jones says people can keep themselves and their family well by continuing with responsible health habits such as maskwearing, regular hand washing and, most importantly, staying home when unwell to stop the spread of infectious illnesses in the community. “Let’s keep practising these good habits throughout winter to keep ourselves and our communities safe.” Dr Jones says most people can manage their illnesses at home this winter by

winter WELLNESS ADVERTORIAL

Not feeling your best? (Part two)

by John Arts

I have a younger client whose mother had been using our supplements for some time. He suffered from low immunity with regular colds, low energy, and generally feeling unwell for no medical reason. Our priority was to improve his immune system. Despite what you read, you cannot ‘boost’ your immune system, despite what you read. The immune system is a complex, interconnected group of cells and tissue types. Our immune system is highly dependent on nutrients. Of these, the most important is vitamin D, which acts like a master controller of our immune responses. Then is a long list of trace minerals and some vitamins. I often talk to people who take vitamin C and Zinc for their immunity. These are important, but just two of many. That is where a well-formulated, comprehensive multimineral, multivitamin and multi-antioxidant can be very helpful as it provides all the essential nutrients — not just some of them. Having regular colds, especially in winter, can be the first sign of poor immune responses. You may have a

good immune system, but it may be half asleep or disorganised. I put my client on an initial higher dose of my multi-nutritional formula to lift critical nutrients rapidly. We also included vitamin D. He has been delighted with the response and went through last winter without a cold and much more energy. The bonus has been that the niggling low-grade depression has gone, probably from lifting vitamin D. Our bodies have a vast capacity to heal and restore, but only if we give it the nutrients it needs. Give yourself a three-month challenge — you may well be surprised. Any vehicle, a motorbike and any car that someone is passionate about, is what we want to see,” says event organiser Kaye Carswell. “Just because it is run by us doesn’t mean it has to be our kind of era car. It is just a good day out. Have some fun. “All the money goes back to the Cancer Society. We have a $10 entry fee for the car display, and the afternoon tea is $13 per person. The volunteers from the Cancer Society do the afternoon tea. We chill out and hope for a good day.

all the clubs within New Zealand are doing something if they choose. It is a national daffodil rally for cancer. “We have a lot of fun doing it, and the community gets behind it, we have a great club, and I have a good committee behind me. It is always good to see the old cars on the road, and people love to see them. “Everybody gets involved and gives us a hand. You can’t help but be passionate for it. It is a neat thing to be part of, and everybody supports what we do. People are very generous, and they throw a coin here and there. They come along to see the cars, and everybody contributes.” Kaye owns a bright blue 1938 DeSoto with cream around the windows and chrome on the grill. For the past four years, she has organised the Daffodil Day Rally for the Vintage Car Club.

“It was my dream car and was the shape I was looking for and the chrome that I wanted. She’s quite a big girl, and I couldn’t be happier. “We get her out and about as much as we can. It is like a sedan with four doors, two of them are suicide doors that open from the back, instead of from the pillar. “She is beautiful and blue. She is what they call an SP5, which started her life out as a taxi, and I bought her about six years ago. The owner and the car are quite similar — we’ve got a few curves. “I love driving it and the response from people and the children. I waited a long time to get my car, and it is nice to be out and about in her and to see other cars out.” For enquiries about the Waipukurau Daffodil Rally for Cancer, people are encouraged to email Kaye at accounts@ wpkmotors.co.nz.

Spend your money on the sausage sizzle and coffee, or bring your own lunch down. “At 1pm, we go on a car run and head out to the country. They keep us off the main trunk line, and we go to a secret venue that only a few of us know where. We go there and have afternoon tea before we run some auctions, which are things we have been donated. “We encourage people to come to the display for the raffles and that side of things, but the car participants go to the secret venue. “I have been involved for four years, but have organised the last three. Rural Building/sheds & shelters Digital design — concrete completion by Andy Bryenton

For those who need solid, high-volume structures extremely fast, prefabricated building technologies have long been the way to go. However, there’s a new wave of materials tech sweeping the world, and it’s moving from the theoretical to the commonplace almost as quickly

as it can manufacture garages, sheds and barns. Concrete 3D printing was, not too long ago, a curiosity producing only small (often oddly shaped) test houses that had more artistic appeal than functionality. However, as the computer programs and hardware which precision-control such machines get less expensive, and their size increases we’re looking at a nearfuture developing industry in structures made in one piece, by machines. In Florida, Printed Farms has successfully come up with a way to make rebar-strengthened, honeycomb-walled concrete buildings up to 180 square metres in size and up to three storeys tall. The bonus? In this often hurricane-hit state, a concrete building is less likely to suffer damage from wind and water, leading to better insurance premiums. However, there’s another big advantage to using a printer on the rural construction site. Printed Farms utilise a COBOD brand BOD-2 printer from Denmark, and it’s a single unit which can be pre-programmed with the shape of any concrete structure.
