HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

Rural sector still relies on print media

In a digital age, print media still stands tall for the decision makers of rural New Zealand. That’s the finding of a major survey undertaken recently by four of the major publishers who serve the farming community — and it’s one, which proves that good old-fashioned ink on paper is more than just ‘still relevant’ — it’s a force for change in the Kiwi heartland.

In fact, the survey shows that a whopping 88% of Kiwi farmers read a specialist rural paper weekly. 82% put what they read into practice, ranking rural print media as one of the top three factors in their decision-making. Fully one-third admit that rural publications alone has convinced them to make a purchase for the farm. It seems that these purchases aren’t small, either — the breadth of coverage and the ability to lay out a complete detailed review mean that tractors, vehicles, vet products and agrichemicals top the list of items bought — thanks to the influence of the press. The Rural Media Habits Survey 2018 focuses in on those who manage either large areas of land or substantial numbers of livestock. It drills down to the media access preferences of those at the forefront of agriculture. While the answers unsurprisingly acknowledge the influence of the internet as a communications tool, the importance of print media is thrown into stark focus. Like the ebook, which has resolutely failed to supplant the old-fashioned paperback, the internet is revealed as a preferred tool for quick communication — 80% of respondents picked ‘email’

as their number one digital task, followed by online banking. Third place, went to doing further research into things they’d seen in rural newspapers and magazines. Another key factor in the survey is good news for businesses wishing to reach out to the rural sector. There’s a very clear answer given, here, to the vexing question of quantifying the impact of marketing to our nation’s farmers. When asked how likely they were to pay attention to advertising each week across different media streams, the greatest number agreed that they were likely to read advertising material in rural magazines and newspapers. The area where ads were unlikely to be payed attention to were on the internet and television. It has been tempting in recent years to give credence to rumours that the world of media is going entirely digital. This survey proves otherwise in clear and simple terms. Because out there in rural New Zealand, it seems that the real news is still delivered on paper, and still carries a hefty amount of decisioninfluencing information, appreciated by an audience with their minds on business.

PROVIDERS OF INDEPENDENT AND PROFESSIONAL FOREST MANAGEMENT SERVICES: We are celebrating. Exports of New Zealand forest products will top $6 billion for the first time this year. About half the value comes from shipments of sawn timber, paper and other processing. Unlike the dairy industry, which exports nearly all it produces, for forestry, we use a lot in New Zealand. Most of our homes are made from wood. The billion trees which the government wants to see planted over the next ten years – plus genetic and technology gains – will see an even greater role for forestry in our economy for decades into the future. Hot spot stock exclusion Stock exclusion and native planting has been the focus at Whakaki Lake as the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council undertakes work in six environmentally identified hot spots. One million dollars was allocated to undertake freshwater improvement work in the areas. Regional Council staff are working with Dick Finney, farm manager for Hereheretau Station, to erect a onekilometre-long fence along the Rahui Channel for stock exclusion. It is also working with the community to plant 400 plus native trees next to the bridge over the Rahui Channel. “This is an exciting time as all the groups come together to restore this lake, which is a precious taonga for the local community,” says Hawke’s Bay Regional Council group manager, Iain Maxwell. Further work is under way to develop an alternative water supply for stock that drink from the Rahui Channel. On the other side of Whakaki Lake, a plan with the Iwitea community is under way to build a 3.7km fence around Lake Paraoa for stock exclusion. Whakaki Lake Trust chairman, Richard Brooking, says the trust is grateful to the Council for the allocation of Hot Spot funding, which has kick-started fencing and riparian planting in the Rahui Channel. “Our community has responded enthusiastically to the larger Freshwater Improvement Fund application, which, once approved, will be the most significant investment into

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

SHOWCASING TO

THE WORLD BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

This is part two of Cheryl Eldridge’s story of being passionate about a rare breed of grey sheep and New Zealand wool. With her husband Barry, she has diversified the farming activities on their property Stansborough Station and developed the breed, which is now called ‘Stansborough Grey’.

C

heryl and her two sons personally sort and class every fleece into three shades of grey as the sheep are shorn. This is done twice annually to keep the quality at its best for textile production. Cheryl has a background in the creative arts, along with daughter Kiri, and designs all the fabrics, accessories and finished product range. “The wool comes in dark, mid and silver grey, and within these preselected tones there is a whole spectrum, which creates the marvelous, almost metallic sheen,” says Cheryl. “I started working alone, in a shed with one loom, and now have six historic looms and a wide blanket loom, and we are training a couple of apprentices to

pass on the knowledge we have. The yarn is better spun as fine worsted, and then it is combed to enhance the lustre. The demand for the fibre is such, that we cannot supply generally because all our yarn is used in-house.” The fibre can be woven, knitted and felted, and all processes are used to produce the unique Stansborough designs. The yarn is taken to the Stansborough Mill in Wellington for weaving. The looms at the mill weave their own strands of history, dating from the early 1890s. “They are amongst the first mechanical looms ever designed and add, rather than detract, from the general impression of intense individual involvement in production. on the complication of each different weave, it can take two days to hand thread and set up each loom before weaving,” says Cheryl. “This intensity of involvement is in all parts of the process between farm and final products that are totally distinctive. Our inspiration for designs come from the environment in which the animals are farmed, tree barks, leaf forms and stunning vistas. Our team have spent years developing the many complicated undulating twill derived and other weaves, and our resulting fabric has a unique handmade and natural feel, quite different to other mass-produced commercial products.” The fabric has beautiful draping qualities, enhanced by the careful — sometimes created by hand — finishing to emphasise the lustre, drape and handling. “We have travelled the world and opened the markets up and we do a lot of high-end quality designs for international clients, but 50 per cent of our business is still national.” Throws, ties, scarves, wraps and cloaks have been fashioned from the gleaming Stansborough fabric. We have worked a lot with the movie industry: including producing garments and items for the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, Spartacus, Pete’s Dragon, The Water Horse and Kidnapped. It has been an honour to present New Zealand creations to the world. I believe wool has been underrated as a natural product — we could be using the lower grade wool across the country to make healthy and sustainable insulation for every home and slippers for children in schools and the elderly. “The value of it being breathable and environmentally friendly, safe, fire resistant and healthy is important to many people. “We are looking after the planet longterm by using natural fibres — people want things that will last in their homes for years to come and have something to snuggle up and you get natural comfort

from wool — unlike man made fibres. You can use so many different types of wool — it just needs good imagination — our grey wool can be mixed with other fibres, including Alpaca and bamboo, and we want to use hemp in the future. “Wool absorbs energy and when used in carpet, you don’t get the gases that carpet glues used in synthetic gives off. Cheryl has worked furnished super yachts, boutique lodges and designer homes in New Zealand and overseas. Their designer blanket range has been gifted to VIPs worldwide, and has the backing of Campaign for Wool — led by Prince Charles. The Stansborough label is now recognised on the world stage for its innovative and highly prized, sustainable, textile creations. “We had no idea the results would be seen on cinema screens around the world. “The Lord of the Rings movies was our ultimate challenge, but now exporting to growing high-end markets is our biggest achievement. We are pleased we found that flock of grey sheep, now registered as a wool breed in their own right, ‘Stansborough Greys’, when the downturn happened in farming in 1991 “The many years of selective breeding and hard work has certainly paid off and it is wonderful to take New Zealand to the world.”

“Naturopathy is about treating the cause of problems, not just the symptoms. We aim to get people’s health back on track quickly with a clear treatment plan and support. We are members of the NZ Society of Naturopaths Inc and have access to a large group of technical advisers and support networks to provide first-rate health assistance. “Our appointments by videolink are proving very popular with families unable to get into the clinic. Herbal treatments have been used for more than 2,000 years and are still the number one treatment for more than 70 per cent of the world’s population because they work.” Amanda and Libby regularly attend seminars to keep updated with new products, treatments and current

technologies. “ U n l i ke phar maceutical dr ugs, naturopathic treatments have no side effects and are safe to use alongside prescription medicines if prescribed by your naturopath,” says Amanda. “I trained as a nurse and was giving out drugs left, right and centre. Each medication had additional medications to counteract side effects. It didn’t make sense to me, but it wasn’t until I experienced this for myself that I realised how shocking it was. Through research, I decided to retrain in natural therapies. “I had an overweight client on blood pressure medication and was sick for the five years involved. She has lost 15 kilos, is feeling incredible, and is transitioning off her meds as she no longer requires them. “The proof is in the pudding with natural therapies. We get people bursting into tears because it is so easy to feel healthy again and they wonder why they haven’t been shown this way before.” The pressure many farmers are under is intense, and their ailments vary including migraines and digestive issues, but the cause is often stress. “We love working with farmers because animal care is their number one priority; however, they often forget about their own needs. “Years ago my friend’s garage was full of supplements including magnesium,

Amanda and Libby believe wholeheartedly that natural medicine is a positive way to help keep the whole family healthy

iron, and molasses for her horses. She came to me for health advice, and it was clear from her deficiencies that she required exactly what she was giving her animals. She hadn’t realised that she also needed nutritional care.” Environmental situations including drought, too much rain, and diseases coming through the farm can cause problems not only to the animals but to their carers. “We offer natural and effective support to look after our humans as well as their animals,” says Amanda. New clients can make an appointment and fill out a health questionnaire on the orangehealth.co.nz website.

“Once the completed questionnaire/ health profile is received we start with a phone or video call. “The questions help us gather information and see the whole picture of issues that can cause illness and request blood tests if required.” Treatment often begins with a specifically designed herbal formula to assist the immune and digestive systems and support the side effects of stress both in and on the body. “An old name for natural medicine was folk medicine, based on various plants and their healing qualities. One doctor wrote that his use of natural medicine came from watching animals.

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

NEW LEASE OF LIFE by Denise Gunn

When a 12-year-old heading dog named Tod arrived at Tararua Vets in Pahiatua for his final visit, he gave vet nurse Natalie Smith a look like he wasn’t ready to go. Natalie called his owners and arranged a retirement home for Tod. Six years later, Natalie has rehomed retired working dogs all over the country through Retired Working Dogs (RWD) NZ.

“W

e help farmers find retirement homes for their dogs after all those years of hard work,” said Natalie. “We also rehome the young ‘failed’ dogs; those who are a bit soft for the job, and we get quite a few working breed pet dogs through as well.” Farmers contact RWD through the organisation’s Facebook page facebook. com/Retired.WorkingDogs or website retiredworkingdogs.org.nz. The dogs that can stay on-farm until they have found a new home are then advertised on behalf of the farmers. Natalie says it’s then up to the farmer to decide where the dog will go. “Sometimes we have dogs that need to be off-farm for whatever reason, and so we take them into foster care.”

The dogs are desexed, vaccinated and socialised before advertising begins. Dogs are also often referred to RWD through veterinary clinics. These dogs tend to have sustained careerending injuries. “We take these dogs into foster and have the surgeries done, and then rehome them.” Pounds, the SPCA and other rescue agencies refer dogs too. “People also contact us looking for dogs, so we advertise for them as well.” Dogs have been taken in from Northland to Otago. All potential new owners are met and their properties inspected. Dogs go out on trial and if it doesn’t work out, they are returned to RWD. A team of fosterers, located from Martinborough to Ohakune, play a critical role behind

the scenes to help the dogs. “Fosterers are so important,” said Natalie. “They take the dogs in and teach them how to be pets. As most of the dogs have never been inside previously, they need to learn about cats, children and sleeping inside. The fosterers take the dogs to vet appointments and to meet prospective, new owners. Natalie said one of the fosterers is a sheep and beef farmer. “This is brilliant because when we get dogs from the pound, they go up there so we can learn whether they want to go to a working home or a pet home.” Philip Cox has been fostering working dogs for the past six years. He and his wife Karen live in rural Wairarapa, surrounded by farmland, river and hills. Philip said they foster dogs to give them a second chance after coming off the farm. When a dog arrives on the property, the couple tries to establish a routine around sleeping and feeding. “It’s important that it has a safe space and it isn’t threatened. Once you see their confidence increase, you can move forward with walks and socialising.” Philip says involvement with RWD has taught them much about dogs and people. “When you see the way some dogs have been treated, your heart goes out to them, and it’s so important to give them a safe place.” Manawatu-based Vicki Lim has had a soft spot for working dogs after meeting them in her capacity as a veterinary student. She has since fostered eight dogs. “They’re intelligent and affectionate and are able to match your lifestyle really well, they tend to be very wellbehaved and willing to please, which makes them really trainable. “We’re extremely proud to be able to give these awesome dogs a loving home after years of hard work. Doing this, we prevent the dogs from getting put down, and allow people to have some amazing companions for the rest of their days.” she said. All our foster dogs are fed by Royal Canin, which is incredible.” Totally Vets in Feilding, Tararua Vets in Pahiatua, Bayer Animal Health and Avalon Marketing and Website Design are also supporters of RWD. “This wouldn’t be possible without their awesome support, and the fantastic people in the community who take in these dogs and give them the retirement they deserve,” said Natalie. “And of course, the incredible team

behind the scenes who help save lives every day.” Natalie said RWD has almost been finalised as a charitable trust and there are several fundraising plans in the pipeline, including a public dog walk. “We are always looking for new foster homes in the lower North Island if anyone is interested.” RWD would also like to have a centralised location for foster dogs to go. “One day we hope to have a base so we can take more of them into care.”

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

ADVERTORIAL

What causes osteoarthritis? by John Arts

Part 1 Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common cause of joint pain. All chronic disease starts with damage to certain cell types that then damages tissue which causes the symptoms we feel. The real driver behind cartilage loss is the health of specialised cells called chondrocytes. These amazing cells secrete and repair cartilage matrix. Anything that affects chondrocyte cells could cause cartilage damage. Mechanical force (injury) can trigger an increase in free radicals, which can cause the death of chondrocytes. In some cases, it is as much about a failure of cell antioxidants defences. The problem is that chondrocytes cannot replicate. Once a chondrocyte dies, the tiny patch of cartilage it maintained will eventually disintegrate. The body tries to fix the problem through the process of inflammation, which is ineffective — it ends up making the problem worse. In my experience, the inflammatory part of OA causes more pain and discomfort than the actual cartilage loss. Just a note that commonly prescribed cholesterol-lowering medication can

either cause joint pain or worsen the pain from existing arthritis. In these cases, I add a high-grade coenzyme Q10 (CoQSol) to replace that lost by the medication. Call me for details. I have many clients that are largely symptom-free despite having significant cartilage loss. I have been dealing with a couple where one has an arthritic knee while the other has OA in the spine and hip. I started them on a double dose of my joint supplement. This meant that they were initially taking 1,600mg of both chondroitin and glucosamine and 400mg of a potent 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. I put both of them on a double dose of my high chondroitin/turmeric joint product, and both are much more comfortable. The sore back is much better, and the hip and knee pain have significantly reduced. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Positive honey trial The first season of manuka honey production has proven positive with results from the Tutira trial manuka plantation showing very encouraging outcomes. The trial at Lake Tutira aims to assess the viability of manuka plantations as a profitable option for steep hill country land. Ten honey samples from the first of two honey crops were collected while the plantation manuka was flowering and submitted to two certified laboratories for testing. Five samples were tested to see if they meet MPIs scientific definition for manuka honey. Four met the criteria for ‘monofloral manuka honey’ and one for ‘multifloral manuka honey’, which means consumers can have confidence in the authenticity of this honey. In addition, the Unique Manuka Honey Factor grade ranged from 4.7 to 10.6. “We are pleased with these positive results from the plantation and are told we can expect the UMF grade to improve as the plantation matures and flowering density increases,” says Catchment services manager, Campbell Leckie. The manuka trial was established by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council on the steep slopes above Lake Tutira to assess the viability of plantations as a profitable option for steep hill country land and an alternative to pasture. “Hawke’s Bay hill country in the north of the region is highly erodible, which means loss of productive soil and poorer water quality in streams and rivers. The laboratory testing included a

‘forecast’ to predict the increase in UMF value. The plantation crop has much higher potential UMF through storage than wild manuka honey, with a full potential of 14.2–27.5 UMF compared to 8–16.3 UMF. “Manuka does not always flower strongly, and weather conditions are not always favourable, but when everything comes in line, there is a very good return. Properly developed, and effectively managed, this can be a great opportunity for landowners, with a beekeeper’s skill critical to realising plantation returns.” Projected returns based on this season’s harvest would work out at a gross $471 per hectare, or up to $2,033 per hectare if it reaches its maximum UMF levels when stored. This compares favourably to returns from sheep and beef farming: North Island hard hill country = $300–$400/ ha; hill country = $479–$570/ha; or intensive finishing farm = $597–$672. “The trial plantation is only five years old, so it is encouraging to get these very positive results at this early stage,” says Mr Leckie. “Manuka plantations potentially complement other activity on the farm, help to reduce sediment in our rivers, increase biodiversity and store carbon.”

Holiday Guide Planning your escape by Jill Dickie

Living the dream lifestyle on a farm or lifestyle block sounds idyllic, and there should never be a need to leave, but the reality is everyone needs to get away from the routine now and then. That means considering the animals’ feed supply, the mail pickup and how safe and secure your property will be while you’re gone. The most reassuring option is to arrange to have someone live in your property for the duration. There are various minding and house-sitting services available to choose from, with responsible, knowledgeable people who will care for your home and stock. Another option for your animals is to rotate their grazing paddocks in such a way that they will be placed close to a road where a friendly neighbour can keep an eye on them for you, and take action if needed, and perhaps they have a teenager at home that might check on your cat and feed your chickens. Maintaining healthy relationships with neighbours is important for cooperative living and at holiday times the friendships built to enable you a relaxing trip away confident in the knowledge your property is well looked after. If you’re holidaying in summer months, it’s a good idea to do a quick maintenance check ensuring

fences are in good repair, and water troughs are functioning and set up an automatic sprinkler system on your vegetable garden. Indoor pot plants can be set in buckets to draw up the water when they need it. For the winter months similar things apply with regard to fencing and water, but also some thought should be given to animal shelters or sheds. You may choose to lock gates around and into your property, though this can be a signal that you’re not home, and if your home isn’t visible from the roadside potential unlawful visitors won’t be seen. If you have precious stock like cattle that are clever at opening gates, it may be an opportune time to put a combination lock on. So far none have been known to work out the correct number! As is ‘Murphy’s law’ whatever doesn’t happen when you’re at home, will potentially happen when you’re not, so leaving a thorough list of instructions and contact phone numbers with

a housesitter is a perfect way of counteracting troubles. An instruction list should include animal feeding schedules, where to turn off electric fencing, combination

DRIVE SAFE

Are we there yet?

On Rural Roads

by Jill Dickie

YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT’S AROUND THE CORNER

This is the question often heard by a driver taking family members on a road trip, and sometimes it comes from adults in the car rather than children! ‘Where are we going?’ is sometimes another question asked, particularly when the trip is a surprise destination. When thinking of holidays or time away, the automatic response is to consider overseas options — a week in the islands enjoying sun, sand and cocktails, or a ski trip to Queenstown with evenings sitting next to a roaring fire in great company, for example. How about considering some of the pleasurable destinations close by, enabling a day trip or even an overnighter? Sometimes, however, taking a short break away from the daily routine can be rejuvenating and invigorating, restoring energy levels by taking in a change in scenery or spending time with loved ones sharing new experiences. These trips have a minimal cost involved, and there is much less for you to organise too. Within the Hawke’s Bay region there are several day trips available depending on your interest, and just outside that within half a day’s travel time, there are so many more delights to indulge in, suitable for both families or couples. A great example is Lake Taupo for its swimming, boating and fishing, and so much more in the district to discover. From the thundering 11 metre high Huka Falls; the picturesque Acacia Bay for camping, fishing, and hiking; the thermal

The immense power of the Huka Falls

pools of Tokaanu or Wairakei Terraces, or just chilling out at the lakeside with a book may be an option for those less adventurous. It’s under two hours to travel there and so much to see and do! For a relaxing and rejuvenating trip away perhaps a drive up to Morere Hot Springs could be an option for a couple’s retreat or a family getaway. Enjoy the peaceful green of the rainforest, or take in a bush walk and camp overnight. Absolute bliss! Kairakau Beach is another option for a quiet weekend away, with a safe swimming beach, great fishing, diving,

surfcasting, kayaking and a very friendly community. Explore Te Apiti beach and Mangakuri beach nearby with a walk around the shores at low tide or take a drive south and take in some snorkelling at Te Angiangi Marine Reserve. If a day trip is enough for you to take from home, there are ample options for walking and hiking, with several trails available — all with brilliant photo opportunities. All it takes is a little planning and preparation, and you’re off on that road trip! Are we there yet?

Earn more from your land Off the Beaten Track connects lovers of the great outdoors with undiscovered locations and experiences that are privately-owned, connecting landowners who can earn money by sharing their piece of paradise with holidaymakers who want to experience unique New Zealand and enjoy a break away with a difference. Off the Beaten Track was created by Waikato dairy farmers, Michele and Roy Connell, who were inspired while watching an episode of Country Calendar in 2015. A family living on a beautiful farm with both ocean and river views that offered privacy and experiences seldom seen commercially were featured, yet the only people able to enjoy that stunning property… was the family themselves. As farmers, the Connells were personally aware of the hardship that many farmers often experience, and so the idea was borne of sharing private land, the lifestyle you love, offering unique experiences in undiscovered locations, whilst being able to diversify farm income. At offthebeatentrack.co.nz it is free to list your property; the website is simple to use and sharing the land you love can provide you income utilising what you already own. This could be unused shearers quarters, a shed or barn, trampers hut or even that perfect spot on your land to pitch a tent or to park a motorhome. You also highlight the amazing experiences your region offers.

Olive oil feeling the heat by Jill Dickie

From early autumn to late winter many varieties of olives are harvested, some to be consumed as table olives; most destined to be processed into oil. In a recent study, Australian researchers discovered olive oil proved to be much safer than canola oil for home cooking. They compared the effects of heating an extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and an array of other common cooking oils and found EVOO to be the safest and most stable even when used at high temperatures. The oils tested included virgin olive oil, refined olive oil, canola, grapeseed, coconut, avocado, peanut, rice bran and sunflower oils. One of the main findings was that EVOO produced the lowest quantity of harmful substances, known as polar compounds, and it showed that EVOO is safe during heating at regular cooking temperatures. The study also discredited the notion that the use of canola oil is beneficial for health. “I found it most interesting how poorly canola oil performed, as the testing showed it to be the most unstable compared to all the other oils, especially in comparison to the three olive oils tested,” said US Miriam Hospital research dietitian, Mary Flynn. “Canola oil produced more than 2.5 times the polar compounds of EVOO and just about double the polar compounds

of even refined olive oil.” The new study builds on a wealth of research by showing that instead of limiting EVOO to use in salad dressings, it can be used in all manner of cooking methods. Extra virgin is the highest quality olive oil available, and a healthy choice with high levels of monounsaturated fatty acids, antioxidants and polyphenols.

To make the BEST of your produce, you need the BEST equipment!

Virgin oil is a second grade of oil, which may have slight colour imperfections and a higher acidity level but less antioxidants due to the refining process. Other uses for EVOO include using as a dipping oil with crusty bread, drizzle over pizza, pasta or homemade focaccia dough, or infuse with garlic, chilli or lime. Bon appetit!

Napier is the main city of the Hawke’s Bay region, has one of the world’s largest collections of Art Deco buildings, and was destroyed by earthquakes and fire in the early 1930s, but what else do we know about this beachside city? It hosts many tourist attractions with activities to suit all ages, tastes and budgets — from adrenaline-pumping adventure to a relaxing day out, and everything in between. Just 45 minutes north of Napier on a farm along the Mohaka River, you can find enough to satisfy the entire family or make up a group of friends, to go horse-trekking, visit a paintball course, clay bird shooting, archery, fishing and swimming. The rafting experience is available at several levels incorporating cliff jumps and canyons, and a visit to a gold mine. A great way to fill in a day or a weekend! For the petrolheads who enjoy ‘getting rid of some cobwebs’ there is plenty on offer, from watching a demolition derby at the speedway, to cart racing, to hiring a motorcycle or snowmobile, or getting down and dirty amongst various obstacles and lots of mud on an offroad experience! If you prefer the water, you might consider chartering a boat in Napier and

see the magnificent scenery as well as marine and bird life such as dolphins, whales, penguins, seals and albatross. There is an option to swim with the dolphins or throw out a line and go deep sea fishing. If you’re a novice sailor, you can learn to sail at the sailing school. Enjoying the local scenery and trails can be done by bicycle or on foot, and guided tours are available. Whether cycling, tramping, hiking or taking a guide there are short and multi-day trips with stunning scenery and plenty of photo opportunities. Whatever your

preference, walking or cycling around Napier is an ideal way to enjoy scenic views, nature and local attractions. Of course, there are indoor entertainment activities available in Napier as well, such as cinema and theatre, or the aquarium, or take in the history and culture of the city at the museum or indulge in a visit to New Zealand’s oldest penal complex, the Napier Prison. It is a city with a huge range of indoor and outdoor activities, rich in history and delightful scenery.

Good farming practices Beef + Lamb New Zealand has welcomed the launch of the Good Farming Practice Action Plan as providing a whole of sector approach that builds on the good work already being done by individual industries. “The launch of the Good Farming Practice Action plan is an exciting oppor tunity for New Zealand’s agricultural sector,” says B+LNZ CEO, Sam McIvor. “This is the first time that farming and horticulture leaders, regional councils and central government have come together and agreed to a set of good practice principles and actions to implement those across the country.” The 21 principles cover nutrient levels, waterways, land and soil health, effluent management and water and irrigation systems, and these principles build on the work already being done in the sector. “As an industry, we see the aims of the Good Farming Practice Action Plan as completely achievable. At Beef + Lamb New Zealand, we launched our Environmental Strategy and Implementation Plan last month. It is aligned with the Good Farming Practice Action Plan and will support its achievement,” Mr McIvor said. “Clean water is one of the four priorities in our strategy. Our strategy sets out a number of ways in which we will improve water quality, including all sheep and beef farmers to have a tailored farm environment plan by the end of 2021.
