DairyNZ represents all dairy farmers in New Zealand, and is in partnership with Fonterra, and the plan has the support of the Ministry for the Environment and the Ministry for Primary Industries. “Modern, science-based farming is the way to achieve a future for New Zealand where dairy farming has a lower environmental footprint,” says DairyNZ’s chief executive, Dr Tim Mackle. Dr Mackle says dairy farmers, and the scientists working alongside them are serious about improving the environment. “This plan lays down the foundation for dairy’s sustained, strategic approach to a lower carbon future. We’re taking the first steps in understanding what dairy can do — in conjunction with the wider agricultural sector, plus industry and urban communities — to help meet New Zealand’s Paris Agreement emissions reduction target. “Our farmers are ready to work on lowering emissions — they are used to rising to the challenge, and they are dedicated stewards of their land who want to do the right thing by the environment.” He says addressing on-farm emissions — methane, which is formed when ruminant animals burp, and nitrous oxide, formed when nitrogen

escapes into the atmosphere — is one of the most challenging issues facing the dairy and food producing sectors, globally and in New Zealand. “Tackling the reduction of on-farm emissions is not going to be easy. It requires our government and the agricultural sector to work together, and as such, the plan is an important part of a broader work programme underway.” Fonterra’s chief operating officer, farm source, Miles Hurrell, says it is crucial to take an integrated approach to all the challenges facing dairy — from climate change and animal welfare, to the protection of waterways — and all the while maintain productivity and the profitability of dairy. “The plan complements the environmental commitment dairy farmers have voluntarily undertaken through their work under the Sustainable Dairying: Water Accord. “Some of their work — such as tree planting, better soil management and reducing nitrogen leaching therefore reducing the release of nitrous oxide — is already helping to address emissions. Then there are the other science-based endeavours that are well underway, like the research to breed cows that produce fewer methane emissions, and a methane inhibiting vaccine.”

Primary exports are booming

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy said the primary sector is forecast for a bumper year ahead after some challenging past seasons of wet conditions, earthquakes, cyclones, and volatile global commodity prices. The Ministry for Primary Industries released the latest Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries at the National Fieldays. “MPI are forecasting that primary sector exports will grow to $41.6 billion in the year to June 2018 — this is an increase of 9.1 percent and would be the highest level ever,” said Mr Guy. “Strong forestry and dairy prices, combined with increasing production of apples, wine, and kiwifruit have underpinned growth for the year ending June 2017. “Dairy prices for most products are forecast to remain at or near current levels as global demand and supply rebalance, while high forestry prices will continue to encourage record harvest levels. “Horticulture exports are also forecast to continue their strong growth across a range of wine, fruit, and vegetable products. Meat and wool exports are forecast to recover to $8.5 billion following an almost 10 percent fall in export values for the year ending June 2017.” New market opportunities and diversification into higher value products such as chilled meat, retail ready products, and nutraceuticals would help to further increase the value of the primary sector exports.

“This week’s National Fieldays is a great showcase of the range of innovative and world-leading Kiwi food producers who are really helping underpin the performance of our economy.” “The government will continue to back the sector and support our exporters on-farm, such as through the Primary Growth Partnership and the Sustainable Farming Fund. “The government is also

supporting our exporters in-market by investing $134 million over the next four years to achieve the objectives in Trade Agenda 2030. “This strategy provides more support to primary sector exporters to diversify, greater resource to government to tackling non-tariff barriers and aims to have 90 percent of our goods exports covered by free trade agreements by 2030.”

ORCHARD CHICKENS by Ann Morgan

T

he brothers saw the growing demand for organic chicken as an opportunity to breed a unique product that was different to anything else on the market. Ben originally started Bostock’s Organic Free Range Chicken in 2014 when he began raising chickens on pasture in open paddocks near the family apple orchard where he grew up. George joined him in the business last year and they moved the birds onto an apple orchard and built chalets to house them in amongst the apple trees. “We wanted to offer people something unique that had never been done before,” said George.

Ben and George Bostock have teamed up to create New Zealand’s first organic free range chicken farm at their family apple orchard in Hawke’s Bay.

“Our apple orchard provides the perfect environment to farm organically. The birds enjoy a happy life roaming freely amongst the trees and are housed in uniquely designed French chalets which are clean and spacious and enable them to move freely outside once they are fully feathered. “Consumers are more aware of where their food comes from now and they want to know the background story. We want to show people the best way for chickens to be raised in New Zealand and we believe that is free ranging on green pasture, in amongst the apple trees.” Ben and George say they have grown up with a passion for healthy, safe growing

processes. “We are really into being vertically integrated. We grow grain and mill it ourselves, feed and farm the chickens, and pack and market the meat under our own brand — we control the whole operation.” The brothers are passionate about sustainable farming and animal welfare. “Organic is the new adjective for free range. ‘Free range’ doesn’t have as much weight anymore because consumers are looking for more transparency from the farm to the plate. The organic certification ensures people get more comfort from knowing their food is antibiotic-free, chlorinefree and chemical-free, with no growth hormones,” says George. The business started selling 3,500 chickens a week and has now grown to 7,000 a week and by September this year they aim to increase their sales to 10,000 chickens per week. Bostock’s Organic Free Range Chicken has nationwide distribution into all the main regions through a selection of food specialty stores, supermarkets and service stations. Ben says the poultry industry in New Zealand has been dominated by large scale corporate businesses marketing themselves as free range. “There is now more consumer awareness and distrust following some false free range marketing. “We are the real deal here and are totally transparent. We have also raised the bar in the industry about 30 levels. You can see this when you see how our chickens live their life, compared to what is the standard requirement to gain free-range status.

“We have grown the orchard and space, as well as the number of chickens we grow as we have to keep up with an overwhelming demand for our organic chicken products.” Bostock’s chickens are housed in solar-powered 120 metre-square mobile barns. They eat homegrown organic feed grown by Ben and George. The maize is grown using the fertiliser the chickens produce. The chicken manure is mixed with wood shavings and spread over the crops as a natural fertiliser creating the perfect natural cycle. Chefs around the country have been fast to praise the product. Celebrity food writer and cook Delaney Mes says she is impressed with the flavour. “Knowing the chickens have been treated well is so important, but beyond welfare considerations you can tell because it comes through in the taste. The chicken retains its moisture and has a much better flavour,” she says. Another significant point of difference is Bostock’s chicken is air-chilled, rather than being cooled in chlorine water baths which is the standard practise in New Zealand. “This means no chlorinated water is used to cool the meat and consequently, there is less shrinkage and water loss during cooking. The brothers say as their chickens grow naturally, the meat is better formed — it is a higher quality and superior tasting. “They live longer, happier lives than other conventional free range chicken and our flocks thrive on a wholesome

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

WORKING TOGETHER FOR A

BY JOANNA MANSON

A highly successful stream restoration project in northern Hawke’s Bay has taken the top prize at this year’s Green Ribbon Awards. A testament to seven years of hard work due to local community groups fulfilling their mission statement, If the waterway is healthy, then everything will survive.

T

he Whangawehi catchment sits on the Mahia Peninsula, an area which was recently in the spotlight as the launch pad of New Zealand’s first rocket to space. Back in July 2010, the local community raised an issue around the potential effects of the Mahia Beach wastewater system and other land activities on the water quality of the Whangawehi stream. This small but passionate group became a catalyst in raising awareness and the movement led to the formation of the Whangawehi Catchment Management group — a collaboration of stakeholders including landowners, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, Wairoa District Council, Department of

Conservation, Tangata Whenua and Marae Trustees marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding. Project coordinator Nicolas Caviale Delzescaux said work really kicked off in early 2013 and hasn’t stopped for the past four years. The group initially set itself the challenge of fencing off 8.3km of stream, retiring 45 hectares of riparian margins and establishing 150,000 native trees. “We had a vision and we started with a focus on the water and protecting the river, however, other initiatives were developed in order to work towards a holistic vision statement to improve the cultural, ecological, economic and recreational value of the Whangawehi

catchment.” One of these initiatives is the Matauranga Maori school programme, which is driven by the marae and community for local Te Mahia school students. Based in the catchment it encompasses Maori themes in hope the lessons will be passed on to future generations.

“We have developed a curriculum with Te Mahia School. Once a month someone from the community teaches the children better ways to manage the environment in a practical way. Whether it’s learning to weave flax, plant trees or eeling we try and teach the children new things that they can pass on to their families as well.”

Another accomplishment for Nicolas and the group was executing a successful community engagement strategy and sustaining it within a remote area of land. “It was critical for the group to break its isolation and invite the wider community to be involved and share the benefits of the work done.” This included planting weekends in the winter, guided walks, mountain bike rides in the summer and community gatherings. “The project has generated a momentum amongst neighbouring landowners and is now influencing conservation work beyond the catchment boundary,” said Nicolas. As a result of the group’s work, significant improvements have been captured by the water and fish monitoring team in the group and has been reinforced by the water monitoring carried out by the regional council at the estuary. Their success was recently recognised by securing the title of 2017 Supreme Green Ribbon Award, which was presented by Environment Minister Dr Nick Smith and Associate Conservation Minister Nicky Wagner at the beginning of June. Mr Smith commended the overall team effort by iwi, landowners and councils. “This Supreme Award for a communityled waterway clean-up is important as it

signals what is needed for thousands of rivers and streams across New Zealand. The Whangawehi Catchment Management Group is a powerful model of what is possible. “Specific achievements include 7.5km of fencing, 42 hectares of native planting involving 136,000 native trees, retirement of 5 hectares of native bush and carefully designed debris dams to retain silt beds. The benefits have been increased schools of whitebait, more abundant long fin eels and a 15 per cent increase in the recreational status of the water quality,“ noted Mr Smith. Looking ahead Nicolas is hoping

to develop a walkway and bike ride area in the catchment as well as a ‘red meat brand initiative’ for the group to become financially sustainable. Something he says will take time to establish but will deliver a return in the long term. “Our next step is based around biodiversity work for pest control and working towards a pest free Mahia concept. We want to carry on what we are doing, we haven’t finished our work just yet and hopefully winning this award will leverage support for our project. We would like to reintroduce some birds like the kiwi and takahe; it’s a long term vision for the group,” said Nicolas.

Therapy for osteoarthritis Part 1 Everyone is different and this is certainly true when using nutritional therapy for osteoarthritis. Sometimes these differences are obvious — helping someone in their 80s with advanced arthritis is different from someone in their 40s who have had their first joint niggles. Other differences though are not so obvious. In some people joint pain is more from inflammation while in others more from the actual joint deterioration. This series of columns looks at some personal stories and the methods we used to bring improvements. I have just spoken with someone with significant osteoarthritis. He is in his 80s and has long term osteoarthritis in his ankles, knees and hips which caused significant pain with restricted mobility. He rated his discomfort at 7/10 and was faced with further steady deterioration. He was already doing some positive things through supplements with a good Omega 3 and a joint supplement. What we did was to fine tune his programme and introduce an antiinflammatory nutrition programme.

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily. “I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.”

The first goal of nutritional medicine is to get these working again. Once these are activated the body can then set to work trying to heal the problem. NAPIER

The re-birth of a city by Paul Campbell

The late Tom Butler, a Hawke’s Bay farmer was a young man in 1931, working on a fence in Central Hawke’s Bay, when suddenly “the fence wires began twanging like a guitar.” His description marked the deadly Hawke’s Bay earthquake which lasted an interminable two-and-a-half minutes, measured 7.8 on the Richter scale, cost at least 250 lives, and caused widespread property destruction. The grim details of this catastrophic event can now be viewed in detail at the Napier museum, while the town itself stands in testament to the enduring human spirit. All but a few of the town’s buildings stood intact among the rubble when the big shake stopped. But today Napier is a time capsule of sorts. In 1931, the Art Deco movement was all the rage, and the architecture of choice at the time in the city’s rebuild. Now is has an international reputation with pastel-painted Art Deco buildings that attract visitors from across the

globe. More than 100 new buildings were constructed in the downtown area between 1931 and 1933. The architectural style is known for its linear structure and touches of intricate ornamentation in the form of geometric motifs like chevrons and zigzags. It was also relatively inexpensive thanks to its basic, boxy designs — a bonus considering that the earthquake struck during the middle of the Great Depression. For 30 years the Art Deco Trust has been dedicated to the preservation, promotion and celebration of the Art Deco City of Napier. Expert guides have taken thousands of visitors through the unique and colourful 1930s street scape exploring the hidden gems of yesteryear either

ADVERTORIAL

Squeaky clean Clark Products has been cleaning up Hawke’s Bay homes, businesses and swimming pools for over 50 years and recently released a new MPI approved range of cleaners for the dairy industry. From a purpose built facility in Onekawa, Clark’s manufacture, warehouse, ship and retail a wide range of cleaning products that will keep your home, farm, office or pool sparkling clean. From dishwashing and laundry detergents to truck washes and rust removers — brooms buckets and cleaning cloths to toilet paper and paper towels — it is cleanliness assured. Clark Products also offer a specialist range for food and beverage plant cleaning which are particularly well suited to the brewing and juicing industry. Now the team is excited to announce their MPI approved Ultimate Dairy Farm Hygiene range of cleaners for the dairy industry, something they say is a “deal breaker for any dairy farmer.” With advanced surfactant technology, the range includes powdered or liquid caustic options, a ULF acid and a liquid chlorine sanitiser. “We found the low dose rate for the acid was economical, it was easy

to use and we were amazed at just how quickly the foam broke down. The alkaline powder was used twice weekly with excellent results, with absolutely no protein build up in either the milking plant or vat. “We have been milking for the past 20 or so years and have used different products through different sheds that we have worked in. This is the only product I have used that bought an amazing shine to the stainless pipe work in less than two weeks,” said Tony Baker from Puketiro Farms. Trevor Gulliver, Advanced Dairy Solutions consultant said: “During my career of more than 20 years supplying dairy hygiene chemicals into the dairy industry, I’ve never seen results like those that we experienced during the trials of the Clark Ultimate range of products.” For more information on this and our food and beverage ranges, brochures can be downloaded from our website www.clarkproducts.co.nz.

Napier was once renowned for its Marineland attraction, but after its remaining performing dolphin died, it closed down and has arisen phoenixlike as the National Aquarium of New Zealand. Stretching along Napier’s Marine Parade the aquarium today boasts more than 100 rich and diverse saltwater, freshwater and land animal exhibits from New Zealand and around the world. The 1.5 million litre oceanarium enables visitors from around the country a glimpse into the world of blue that stretches for thousands of miles off the New Zealand coastline. The are at least five types of shark and many other reef fish that crowd the glass of the underwater viewing tunnel along a moving walkway of fifty metres in length. The kiwi, tuatara and penguin enclosures provide an insight into New Zealand’s most precious species along with species from the Americas, Asia and Australia, including alligators and piranhas. All the marine species are housed in water straight from the Pacific just a few

metres off in Marine Parade’s breaking surf, all managed by the aquarium’s tanks and enclosures incorporating some of the latest technological life support and operational systems. The National Aquarium works in close partnership with schools, scientists and other community groups. In a wide range of programmes, projects and public events locally, nationally and internationally, it aims to increase awareness of the need to protect natural habitats and biodiversity. From early childhood through to primary and secondary school, students can experience unique educational experiences outside of the classroom. The aquarium has a long-standing reputation for robust collecting techniques, handling and initial treatment, along with superb water quality and filtration, all facets gaining the attention of university scientists from around New Zealand, and National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), which uses the aquarium as a monitoring and research centre.

A record for exports

CONT RACT SON ORS MER Roofing & Spouting

The gateway to and from Napier pumps the lifeblood of the province with huge export volumes of the area’s production flowing to overseas markets via the Napier Port — now processing some of its highest export volumes in the past decade. It recorded “the busiest April ever with 28,513 twenty-foot equivalent (TEU) containers handled over the port’s wharves,” said Napier Port CEO Garth Cowie. “That’s off the back of a busy March where monthly volumes were the second highest on record.” Apple numbers have also started strongly and the port expects to process somewhere between 21,000 and 22,000 TEU over the course of the season, up 4 to 6 percent on last year’s record crop. “At the end of last week, we had processed 8,860 TEUs of apples, which is a record for this point in the season,” says Mr Cowie. “We are also seeing growth across a number of other major export sectors – forestry, viticulture, and horticulture. Over the next decade, we expect significant growth in the bulk and breakbulk areas as well, with log volumes forecast to increase from 1.1 million tonnes to around 2.4 million tonnes by 2025.”

While the number of trucks coming through our gates has doubled since January, we haven’t seen any increase in truck turnaround times. On average we are taking around 10 minutes to process each truck from entry to exit,” said Mr Cowie. Planning for a new wharf to handle the projected cargo growth is underway. “Napier Port is a critical link between our local producers and world markets, and future-proofing that link is vital for our regional economy,” Mr Cowie said. “The proposed wharf will ensure we are able to handle the projected volume growth in the future and allow for the larger vessels should they decide to call at Napier.” “The future berth development will see the continuation of a cost effective supply chain for our local importers and exporters through Napier Port.”

The consumer’s right to know While the cogs of government grind slowly, there is optimism growing that mandatory Country of Origin Labelling (CoOL) will happen in New Zealand, in the wake of the Australian adoption which becomes law next year after a two-year grace period. Horticulture New Zealand awaits the result of appearance and submissions to the Primary Production Select Committee at parliament. The committee is now pondering all submissions, which closed in May. “Firstly, our recent survey showed that more than 70 percent of New Zealanders want mandatory Country of Origin Labelling (CoOL) for fresh fruit and vegetables,” said Horticulture New Zealand chief executive Mike Chapman. “Further to that survey, we have engaged the public via social media platform to ensure they could continue to be part of the conversation about mandatory CoOL on fresh fruit and vegetables. “In the six weeks since we set up the Facebook page Country of Origin Labelling NZ, our reporting shows we have reached 660,000 people with our messages, with over 15,000 people engaging with our posts. We have had nearly 8,000 positive feedback reactions to posts, compared to only 95 negative feedback reactions. “We also had nearly 1,000 users click through to make their own submission to the Select Committee – though we

don’t know how many actually did – and 725 emails have gone to MPs around New Zealand expressing people’s views about CoOL. “This indicates to us that New Zealand consumers, like their Australian cousins who have mandatory CoOL, want to be able to make choices based on their own beliefs and values. The horticulture industry is embracing consumer interest in where food comes from and how it is produced.” “There is a view that mandatory CoOL in New Zealand will have an impact on trade,” Mr Chapman says. “But the major countries we export to require country of origin labelling and it is allowed under international trade rules. We believe it will in fact, benefit negotiation of trade deals because consumers support country of origin labelling. “While we appreciate there have been some moves to have CoOL voluntarily, it is not uniform across retail outlets and 66 percent of Consumer NZ survey respondents said they look for CoOL labelling but find it only 32 percent of the time for fruit and 29 percent of the time for vegetables.”

A good outlook for growers Providing Ministry of Primary Industry forecasts don’t run foul of climatic events, pestilence or other adversity, the country’s horticulture enterprises, and thus the baseline of the Hawke’s Bay economy, looks extremely buoyant. Horticulture exports were forecast to reach $5.2 billion for the year ending June 2017, before increasing steadily to exceed $6.3 billion by 2021. Growth is expected to be led by apples and wine for the year ending 2017 as a record apple harvest boosts export volumes, and global demand for our wine remains strong. Increasing plantings of higher value gold kiwifruit varieties will support future growth, but lower production yields for green kiwifruit is expected to keep export revenue steady in 2017. The ministry cites vineyard expansion, the release of more Gold3 kiwifruit licences, and the replanting and expansion of apple orchards as driving an expectation of strong volume growth in the next three to four years. Zespri is planning to release 400 hectares of Gold 3 Kiwifruit licences annually for the next three years, and apple and pear planted areas could exceed eleven thousand hectares by 2020. Kiwifruit exports for this year are forecast to be $1.7 billion, relatively unchanged from 2016. With increased plantings of gold varieties expected over the next few years, exports are forecast

to exceed $1.8 billion by 2018. The year to this month includes crop from last year’s record pick despite production receding in 2017. Wine exports were forecast to reach $1.6 billion for the year ending this June. The export price per litre expectations for 2017 have been lowered by 55 cents to $6.70 per litre. The 2017 vintage is forecast to be 410,000 tonnes, which is slightly lower than 2016, but will comfortably be the third largest New Zealand vintage recorded. Exports of wine are forecast to reach $1.7 billion by 2018. Apple and pear exports are expected to reach record levels for the 2017 harvest at 387,000 tonnes. This is slightly higher (9,000 tonnes) than MPI’s December estimate, due to favourable growing conditions and minimal hail damage. Changes in the variety mix and further expansion into higher-paying markets (particularly Asia) were expected to lift export prices. However, these increases will be tempered by the following factors: the need for better alignment of supply with market demand for niche varieties such as New Zealand Queen; rising

global apple supply providing increased competition and a forecast higher New

Zealand dollar against the euro and British pound compared with the 2016.

Using chlorine dioxide fungicide by David Law

Having written an article at a similar time last year about the use of a stabilised chlorine dioxide (CLO2) in controlling fungal diseases in wine grapes, I thought it timely to give an update of how the product performed in a very challenging year. very effective against other pathogens, namely powdery mildew, even in the toughest of environments. “I must stress these were unofficial observations and formalised trials are to follow to substantiate these findings regarding efficacy against powdery mildew”. What was observed is that when applied at key times throughout the early part of the season dead and dying powdery mildew was identified on both canopy and berries as it turned black.

Of course the 2016-17 season was one to forget, with splitting and disease pressure rampant across most of the country, but it did provide a great opportunity to test the efficacy of chlorine dioxide in a pressure situation, and I’m pleased to report it stood up very well indeed. Stabilised CLO2 is registered as a broad spectrum fungicide with label claims for use against botrytis. Having said this, as the name ‘broad spectrum’ suggests it was found to be

Botrytis turning into a severe infection by spreading and destroying the grape berries

This indicated that even though sulphur sprays were regularly applied there was still powdery present, just not visible, and materialised when eradicated by the CLO2. This would indicate most people walk past powdery mildew infected vines without realising its there. CLO2 was also used with success on heavy infestation of late season powdery by applying two applications three days apart. Chlorine dioxide solution is used to eradicate fungal disease, and so should be used as part of a programme that includes ‘protectant’ cover sprays. But where it can come into its own is late season with zero withholding and nil residues. As with the powdery control, botrytis incidence and severity was minimised in the blocks that had regular CLO2 applications through the season, even in blocks that are high cropping and traditionally have been susceptible to this disease.

Now we are at the business end of the season and trying to mitigate the severe botrytis explosion primarily due to splitting. What we observed was “control” and reduced advancement of the infection. When botrytis attacks as intensely as it did we can’t expect to eradicate it with softer chemicals, but we can try to stem the flow, and this is what we observed. Reports of blocks treated with CLO2 under heavy disease pressure showed a marked reduction of advancement (compared to unsprayed adjacent blocks), and allowed grapes to weather the storm and ultimately be harvested. It is about protecting the neighbouring berry from infection by destroying the inoculum transfer from the worst infected areas. All in all stabilised chlorine dioxide is shaping up to be an integral part of vineyard spray programmes, the key being to use it strategically and avoid a major battle at seasons end. Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After almost ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”.

Come along to our expos and see us at (see below RED BAR for details). If you have completely resigned yourself to having back or neck pain for the rest of your life, then chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.

very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood Dave had tried everything; pressure and lots more. every time he was overseas he would search for anything “We have testimonials from that could possibly help. people with over fifty years While on one of these of back problems and even overseas trips eight years ago, have them in a number of Dave discovered the Teeter schools in New Zealand for Hang-Ups. “The first time I their special needs children” tried it, the pain disappeared he told me, “the blood to the and I was completely pain brain helps these kids and free for about 30 minutes, the results are excellent” nothing had done that” he What this means for the told me. Dave never believed aging population is that it it would fix him, “as specialists helps maintain the health of had told me it was irrevers- the brain as we all get older. ible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted Dave told me that he some serious relief”. realised that, had he not the Teeter for himself To Dave’s surprise the more tried would still be suffering, “I he used the table the longer he the pain stayed away, until would still be a miserable after nearly three months he grumpy bugger, living with was completely pain free, “I pain, that is why we do the couldn’t believe it’ he told me shows, people need to try it “I had spent large amounts of for themselves” he told me money on every form of treat- “most people actually get ment available and here was off with the pain either gone something I had never heard or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been of sorting it out for me in a talking” Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs: It

uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate. De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots far more effectively and returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

BACK

Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there. This is pure logic, if a machine is out of alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

NAPIER

In 2008 I had been living with a serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The Specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business. At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two, I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has brought my health back. Thank you very much for the opportunity. Very best regards Paul Gordon Cambridge

NECK PAIN?

Here in New Zealand, Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability • Reduce The Effects Of Ageing Caused By Gravity

Dr Kanji has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car.

ADVERTORIAL

Where speed is king New Zealand’s biggest automotive event will wow the crowds like never before – with the 11th edition of CRC Speedshow on Saturday July 22 and Sunday July 23 brimming with ‘firsts’. Topping the bill will be Craz-E-horse, a Kiwi-designed and built Mustang road car with a world record in its sights. Powered by a single electric motor developing 2000 horsepower Craz-E-horse will make its public debut at CRC Speedshow in unfinished form. Another star debuting will be drifting’s ‘Mad’ Mike Whiddett, who will compete in the spectacular Live Action Arena against Fanga Dan but also meet fans, sign autographs and run a seminar called 30 minutes with Mad Mike. The Live Action arena will also feature the Ultimate Speed Machine Challenge, drone racing, a drag car start up and burn out, UTV racing and a spectacular jet car flame show. For hot rod fans, 20 new rods will be revealed for the first time and there will be a few debut North Island appearances from machines like the Semi Rat. If race cars are your thing, the championship winning ‘number one’ cars from the last New Zealand circuit racing season will all be gathered together in one place at one time. Road car fans can also rejoice, with a new feature — the Classic Cover Insurance Retromania Display — bringing iconic machines and their modern namesakes together for a unique display.
