With an estimated 80 million trees to be planted this season, ministers asked Te Uru Rakau (Forestry New Zealand) and the Ministry for Social Development to ensure they were working together with industry to help meet the labour needs for the 2019 planting season. The campaign includes promoting the silviculture industry to job seekers and promoting MSD services for employers to fill vacancies. “This government is committed to upskilling and training people on benefit for industries where there are labour shortages,” says Minister for Social Development Carmel Sepuloni. “More than 300 MSD clients have been placed into forestry roles across the industry in the last year, and we are committed to ensuring that more clients have access to opportunities in the industry through this targeted tree planting initiative.” Forestry minister Shane Jones says with 125 people placed in planting jobs as a result of this campaign; we are well on the way to meet the growing labour needs. “On top of this, six people in Hawke’s Bay who are unemployed and serving community service sentences have been connected with employers in the region. It is not just about numbers; it is also about upskilling our rangatahi and supporting them to contribute to a trained, safe workforce in planting, thinning, pruning and harvesting. “Through the One Billion Trees Programme, we are supporting training initiatives across the country that will help build a sustainable, domestic

Shane Jones, Forestry Minister

workforce in the coming years. The success of a forestry training pilot to upskill young workers in Te Tairawhiti — Gisborne is a great example of this work — with eight rangatahi now in fulltime employment. “On top of this, a workplace pilot jointly developed by Te Uru Rakau and the Department of Corrections, is underway and providing forestry training and work experience for up to 15 prisoners in Northland who will support them to be work ready on release. “These initiatives are key to supporting a vibrant forestry sector and creating real training and job opportunities in the regions. With the additional funding being delivered through the Wellbeing Budget, Te Uru Rakau will now be able to place an even greater focus on workforce development.”

Only rain campaign The impact of stormwater quality on the Ahuriri Estuary is the focus of a new campaign in Napier. The joint initiative from Napier City and Hawke’s Bay Regional Councils is aimed at educating local industry and residents, with councils saying it is important everyone knows what goes on the ground can contaminate stormwater before it gets to the sea and waterways. Napier City Council manager Environmental Solutions, Cameron Burton, says the most important message is that only rain should drain to the urban waterways’ stormwater network. “When it rains, about 70 per cent of Napier’s stormwater is carried to Te Whanganui-a-Orotu (Ahuriri Estuary). The rest is carried to the Pacific Ocean. That means both the estuary and the ocean can get dirty from everything we do around it. “When we leave contaminants, such as paint, oils, dust, rust, dirt, chemicals, and litter exposed to rain or don’t pick up windblown litter or dog poo, the water that flows off the land picks these items up or dissolves them, and they pollute these environments. Everyone can help protect the estuary if we ensure that only rain goes down the drain.” Hawke’s Bay Regional Council environmental team leader, Mike Alebardi says pollutants can be very toxic to aquatic life and often increase algae and bugs in the water, negatively affecting ecosystems and people.

SAFETY FIRST “The main message is that if we all work together, we can clean up our waterways. Stormwater is rainwater that falls on roofs, yards and roads that doesn’t soak into the ground. “As a lot of Napier City is low lying and flat, any excess rainwater goes into the stormwater pipes — the network that protects homes and streets from flooding and which flushes out to the Ahuriri Estuary. Everyone living and

WAGENER Sparky CA

working in Napier can play a part in healing the estuary by making sure only rain drains into the stormwater drains. “Members of the public also have a big part to play by quickly reporting any chemical or contamination spills to the regional council’s 24-hour Pollution Hotline on 0800 108 838 or to the Napier City Council on 06 835 7579.”

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

Advancing with BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

David and Judi Grey founded Avogrey Orchard in 1969 following in his father Len’s footsteps of introducing the Hass variety to New Zealand in the 1950s.

“M

y grandfather, Charles, had the first avocado trees in New Zealand dating back to 1916. He acquired some seeds that were brought into New Zealand by the Department of Agriculture around 1916 and established three trees,” says David. “It took some 10 years before they fruited and my dad was curious and marketed a few in Auckland. Those trees grew until around 1970. Americans and overseas people knew about avocados,

so dad imported new varieties from Australia and California even before the second world war, and again in the 1940s and 50s. He would have been the first to import the Hass variety around 1960. They had to be barerooted, probably wrapped in wet hay for the long boat trip to New Zealand. They were then grafted and held in quarantine for twelve months — if they survived, he established them in his orchard. “Naturally, I grew up with an interest in avocados and after a horticultural

degree at Massey, completed a year at Polytech in California. When Judi and I returned to Gisborne, we acquired our own block and began to grow avocados, citrus, kumara and melons. If the soil type and climate are right, avocado is a relatively straight-forward crop that doesn’t need a lot of spray or chemicals. “Our property is frost-free, has silty clay, which drains slowly but well. Most growers are in Northland and Bay of Plenty, which has a much lighter, volcanic or sandy free-draining soil — so we have a different set of conditions in our area. “Compared to other growing districts, we have lower rainfall and lower humidity — therefore, lower disease pressure. Industry recommends 10–12 copper sprays a year, but in our area, we might use it twice a year because we don’t get the fungus and rot problems — this works in with our almost sprayfree routine. “Judi and I have grown and tested many varieties over the decades. Hass is the main known fruit produced in New Zealand, but in our house we love Sharwil. It is a superb eating avocado, known to be resistant to pests and diseases, which is a critical plus. The downside is, it doesn’t perform well as a fruiting variety. Sharwil came from Queensland and became dominant in Hawaii due to the warmer climate. We planted 30 seeds from Sharwil fruit, hoping one or more of the resulting trees would produce good crops of top quality fruit. Our selections of the Avogrey Green-skin Super Series are without doubt superstars. To patent

or have Plant Variety Rights on a new variety, that variety must be shown to be Distinct, Uniform and Stable. “Our new GreyStar variety is fully registered, Eclipse is under evaluation, and Titan is still to test. All three are green-skinned, cropping well, and of superb quality. GreyStar is mid-season, Eclipse is very late, while Titan is the big one — up to 900g.” The couple also grows the American variety, Esther, a large late-season fruit — later and better than the Reed variety. Recent high prices for avocados show a need for good late season varieties. Much of the Hass crop was exported this year to keep faith with overseas markets, leaving the New Zealand supply short in April, May and June. “We have around 600 trees which are not a huge number. The trees can get very large unless you prune them; our biggest is about 12 metres in height and diameter. Although not a problem for us, rats and possums can damage fruit on the tree. Also, leaves are very palatable to sheep and other grazing animals. Our orchard is grassed, and we mow regularly. “Years ago we had trouble with leaf roller caterpillar, but don’t have the problem now, and haven’t put a chemical spray on our crops for some five years. We use fertiliser as required. The fruit can stay on the tree for a long time as they ripen only once harvested. It is like self-storage, but holding them too long means you can throw the trees into biennial bearing and every second year have reduced production.

June 2019

David has been involved in growing the fruit since he was young and is following in his grandfather's footsteps “Tree plantings of Hass have gone crazy in recent years, but we have a lot of faith in our new varieties. There has been interest from nurseries in Australia and South Africa — we now have plants in quarantine in both countries. Here, we

have established around 200 GreyStar and Eclipse and have two new growers planting in the spring. A neighbour is planning a planting of perhaps 2,000 as well. It is very exciting, and we hope our creations will be a game changer.”

Grant and Toni Montgomerie are advocates for hunting wild pests and started their family business PossumMan Petfoods as a solution to pass on the valuable nutrition to pets.

Things don’t just get chucked in a big mincer; we are the nearest thing to organic pet food that you can get because wild game has never been given antibiotics or any chemicals.” “We work alongside regional councils and the Department of Conservation to get rid of pests in New Zealand and are constantly looking for access to poisonfree areas.” PossumMan Petfoods has licences to process possum, rabbit, hare, wild deer, wild goats, wild turkeys and wallaby.

e started the business three years ago with 40 hunters and now have 130 spread across the country removing wild animals such as possum, wallaby, rabbits and turkey from properties,” says Grant, also known as Monty. “The pet food industry is heavily regulated, and there are strict guidelines, which must be adhered to. All wild game must be taken from poison-free areas, and correct paperwork and procedures followed. “Once killed every animal is GPS tracked, has a post-mortem and

“Our son Dylan works alongside us, and we are a licensed Ministry of Primary Industries primary processing plant, which is heavily audited on a regular basis. We deal with the poison and TB forms and ensure things are done the proper way; there aren’t too many of us around. Being a primary processor means secondary processors buy their meat from us to create their products.” Hunters are based across the country and come from all walks of life. “Some work full-time and some parttime and they range in age from 16 to 70 year-olds, including mums and dads and they all love the job. As long as they pass our exams and get registered anyone can be a hunter,” says Monty. “It is an MPI requirement that hunters work without using poisons which affect other animals and the environment. Rat bait stays in the ground for three years, but with us when the animal is killed, it is healthy for the environment. “We are based in Northland, and when we are low in wild game here, we gather from hunters elsewhere such as Hastings, Taranaki, Waikato or the South Island. “Our team work the oldfashioned way, and if you have used bait stations on your farm prior to us coming in, we simply have a rest period on the land before culling.” The registered hunters put lures around farm boundaries at regular intervals to encourage the wild pests out of bush areas.

“Our hunters are passionate about what they do. We have formed strong relationships and feel good that we are turning pests into pet food and employing people. You just need people skills, and to be able to do the right things,” says Monty. “To collect the food I travel with our freezer truck and scales and check the paperwork is correct before loading.” Monty and Toni have been associated with the possum industry for some 10 years. “It is an exciting industry to be a part of and making pet food is a great solution for using the wild animals because the health benefits are amazing. Possum meat is low in fat and high in omega fatty acids. “Lots of animals have allergies sometimes caused by sheep, chicken or beef products and fillers so changing to wild game means they are getting protein with no chemicals in it. ”We aim to keep the food as close to the way nature intended as possible, by avoiding fillers and chemical additives. If you buy a kilo of possum, you are getting 100 per cent possum. “It goes through a five-millimetre mincer, and we don’t use chicken fillers or offal from other animals. We don’t use the heads, guts, feet, fur or eyes and we produce the food in cubes and freeze them in snaplock bags for convenience. “Using wild game is essentially freerange unlike the meat used by some

other pet foods on the market. We don’t get old milking goats that grew up on concrete, our goats come from the bush, and the meat is much darker and beautiful. We are members of the NZ Pet Food Association and enjoy helping our clients look after their pets dietary needs. More people aware of the importance of good nutrition for their pets nowadays and they can be confident our products don’t have added chemicals that can cause allergies in their much loved furry companions.”

ono grew up on an extensive sheep and beef farm near Kaikoura and was homeschooled during high school. Alice grew up in Herbertville on a sheep and beef farm and boarded at Iona College in Havelock North. The couple spent five years shepherding in the South Island high country before travelling overseas in 2016. “I cycled 4,000 kilometres around Europe with a friend because she insisted I get off the farm before settling down. We got off the plane and bought the first second-hand bikes we liked and rode. Jono did his own travels across Ireland at the time,” says Alice. “We then flew to Tanzania and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and taught in schools and helped build some as

well. We stayed with local villagers and the culture was amazing.” Alice graduated from Lincoln University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science with Honours in Plant Science and completed a Certificate in Apiculture from Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre. “I own seven dogs, and Jono has 10. They work with sheep and cattle. I really enjoy the challenge of getting young dogs started. I also enjoy beekeeping and am building up my numbers. Jono’s parents have 600 hives, and I was really scared of them so did a beekeeping course and loved it. We have 10 hives and would like to produce our own honey, but it is difficult because the busy season is spring and that is when we are docking,

so need to work out a system that works before building numbers. “My grandma used to have a Hereford stud, and five years ago, we purchased the last of her cows. We brought more from other farmers to increase our herd up to 150, and we graze 60 Angus for my parents. “Jono and I try to be equal in the responsibility. He looks after the stock and I do a lot of maintenance. It is a hill property, and the biggest bang for our buck is putting fertiliser on, fencing and grazing properly as a grass-fed system.” Jono completed his Diploma in Farm Management at Lincoln University in 2010 and is currently training to get his private fixed-wing plane licence. “I spent four months working on a hunting estate in the Scottish highlands in 2016 as a gamekeeper while Alice travelled,” says Jono. “I took wealthy English and Europeans around the estate hunting red deer stags, and I ended up being invited to go hunting in Croatia, Hungary, Spain and Germany. I also spent a month working for a Hereford stud in Ireland. I learnt a lot from seeing how they do things. The animals spend a long time indoors, and we had CCTV cameras so we could monitor them giving birth from our kitchen. “We love the mental and physical challenge of farming, and this is our first year of farm ownership. Farmer of the Year regional finals. Alice attended a district contest in Cheviot a few years ago, and I have competed in two district finals so we thought we would do it again. We didn’t qualify for the grand final, but we had a lot of fun. You are put out of your comfort zone and learn a lot.” The couple is re-establishing fences on their property and plan on progressing their waterways in the near future. “We would love to have 200 Herefords and possibly start a stud. One future goal is to enter the environmental awards. We have a great area of native bush and do a lot of planting to feed the bees. Although we have manuka and tree lucerne, you need year-round feeding options for them. My parent’s property is a large sheep and beef farm,

and we both have done a lot of work in the South Island high country including on Mt White Station. Recently I got the opportunity to work at Molesworth Station with some friends, which I really enjoyed. “One of the perks of owning a farm is that we can take these opportunities and gain experience. Molesworth is reasonably traditional, and a lot is done on horseback as you can’t reach places by vehicle. You have to use a pack team of horses to take supplies into some areas. They have huge mobs of cows and need good stockmanship. They are very careful not to over dog the stock and gather them quietly. Working on horseback was fantastic, and the cows responded well. We plan to do the same here.”

Should I take coenzyme Q10?

The answer to corrosion

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance essential for life.

Prolan a lanolin based industrial lubricant and corrosion inhibitor made here in New Zealand has many uses within the agricultural and industrial sectors for preventing corrosion and lubricating machinery.

While we normally make all the CoQ10 we need, some people because of age, health problems or medications can benefit from taking extra good quality CoQ10. CoQ10 is essential to make the energy our bodies need. The final stage of making energy needs CoQ10 to shuttle the hydrogen needed to generate energy. If your levels of CoQ10 are low, this can be felt as low energy, weak muscles and general fatigue. CoQ10 is also an exceptional antioxidant protecting cells and fats from free radicals. The most essential antioxidant function is to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol as it circulates in the body. It is a critical part of our natural defences against blockages in heart arteries and other blood vessels. Possibly the most common reason for CoQ10 supplementation is for those using cholesterol-lowering (statin) medication. The side effects of statins are so common that they are a diagnosable disease called statin myopathy. The most common side effects are muscle stiffness, pain and weakness; this can also cause general fatigue, which often feels like a lack of motivation.

Statins effectively inhibit the enzyme needed to make cholesterol. Unfortunately, this enzyme (HMG-CoA reductase) is also required to make CoQ10. Blocking this enzyme reduces cholesterol but also CoQ10 by as much as 50%. Drug companies are well aware of this problem and hold patents for combining CoQ10 with statins. Until such drugs are available, I recommend those on statins supplement with 100– 200mg of naturally fermented CoQ10. Be aware that our retail market is now flooded with lower grade semi-synthetic CoQ10 usually sold in higher doses at much lower prices. Adding a good CoQ10 alongside statins will in most cases, protect against and often reverse existing statin side effects. My favourite is the wellresearched and patented US product CoQsol. If you are unsure feel free to phone or email your questions. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. DRIVE SAFE On Rural Roads

YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT’S AROUND THE CORNER

Commercial operators, as well as farmers, have found Prolan Enduro Heavy Grade when applied to a vehicle chassis is excellent as a rust preventative on 4WD, fertiliser loaders, truck, bus and motorhome chassis. In fact, it works that well that many vehicle-testing stations are recommending a coating of Prolan to prevent corrosion. A spray on moldboards and ploughing equipment prevents rust and keeps them clean and in good condition. It is the unique ability of the lanolin in Prolan that penetrates into metal components that prevents corrosion. It saves the life of machinery exposed to air and moisture out in the field or during storage. Around the workshop and for general maintenance Prolan’s ‘Enduro Medium grade’ works well as a general lubricant, penetrating into seized bolts, chains and other moving parts. It’s so versatile it replaces many other workshop lubricants and is used to stop squeaks as well as to prevent rust long term. Farmers and contractors have noticed that Prolan stays on once applied, saving repetitive maintenance. For example, an orchard

mulching contractor found by applying Prolan to his flails on his machine he saved time on repeat applications instead of lubricating daily he used it once a week for maintenance. A coating of Prolan Enduro medium grade is excellent on quad bike chassis protecting against manure and salt, with the added benefit that it stays on. In the Prolan product range, there is also an anti-seize grease, which is very popular for assembly of components. A small smear applied to bolts or pins when assembling equipment ensures they can be undone years later. It also minimises parts replacement as these can be removed easier instead of by force which results in breakage if no anti-seize has been applied. The Prolan product range is made up of natural wool lanolin, which ticks the boxes for environmental friendliness and biodegradability — safe on the environment as well as the user. Prolan saves time, work and money. By simply applying a spray to farm machinery and equipment it lasts a lot longer and increases its resale value.

HORTICULTURE Specialist forces deployed by Andy Bryenton

The orchard, vineyard or horticultural enterprise of today requires more than just your average tractor. In fact, with the machines used in the open field becoming larger and more powerful each year, it makes perfect sense that the coveted Tractor of the Year competition, held in Milan, Italy, now contains a category just for horticultural machines. The winner of this category for 2019 is the Same Frutteto CVT 115 S, a compact machine with a whole lot of technology packed into its slender frame. Slender, of course, to fit between the rows of trees or vines, and

equipped with the correct linkages and power take-off to run highly specialised harvesting or super-narrow cultivation and upkeep implements. The stature of the Frutteto is not where it ends. There’s an innovative FARMotion turbo diesel under the hood, available as either a frugal three or powerful four-cylinder configuration. It’s good for 113hp at just 2,200rpm and is mated to a smooth CVT transmission, which allows for on-road transport speeds of up to 40kp/h, or a very precise ‘crawl’

at low speeds as the tractor navigates orchard spaces. Moreover, because many horticulture operations are laid out on hilly ground, there’s even the option to replace the conventional swinging front axle with a new hydropneumatic, independent front suspension system

with active control. The damping rate and spring stiffness are automatically adjusted by an electronic module, leading to a very smooth ride and sure-footedness. No wonder that 25 leading European tractor reviewers agreed to make this their pick of the crop for 2019!

Growing Hawke’s Bay’s economy A suite of Provincial Growth Fund investments comprising transport infrastructure, digital connectivity, water storage and skills and employment in the Hawke’s Bay region has been announced. The investment package, worth more than $68 million, will build on the region’s strength to unlock the economic potential of the Hawke’s Bay and improve social outcomes. “The Hawke’s Bay is known for its rich farming and horticulture sectors, but it faces challenges such as high youth unemployment, low wages and lower GDP per capita compared to the rest of New Zealand,” says Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Regional Economic Development Fletcher Tabuteau. “That’s why the PGF prioritised the Hawke’s Bay for investment, and I am proud of the package we are able to unveil. The region is a significant contributor to New Zealand’s agriculture sector and a global producer, processor and exporter of primary sector products. It is therefore heavily reliant on dependable water supply and transport to get its products to market. “The PGF is making a major investment in water with two water storage initiatives, an aquifer mapping project and a region-wide water assessment project to better understand the region’s wider water needs. “The transport initiatives being announced would improve links within the region and between major transport hubs, key services and markets,

making travel more time and cost efficient. The local digital connectivity package will connect 11 Hawke’s Bay marae to fast and reliable broadband to help them seize business and education opportunities. Additionally, through the PGF’s Te Ara Mahi programme, we will invest in employment, skills and capability through two projects that will grow employment opportunities for the benefit of local people and businesses in the region. “We are also helping unlock the potential of Maori-owned land for horticulture by connecting a latent workforce in isolated communities to sustainable employment and training opportunities. This investment comes from the PGF’s Whenua Maori programme. “The announcements are a longFletcher Tabuteau, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Regional Economic Development awaited and much-needed boost for the Hawke’s Bay and will absolutely lead to economic growth and enhanced improving the security of water supply in dry years. New Zealand. Beds of Challenger 2 have higher yields of better quality spears. A second new variety, Pacific Endeavour is an early hybrid. The seed is free of asparagus virus 2. Endeavour has fatter spears meaning it can be planted closer to the soil surface. That means the crowns warm up faster, thereby advancing the harvest further. A third technique is the use of plastic cloches over the beds. The method further advances the harvest into a time

when prices are much higher. Together with higher planting rates and the use of buried drip fertigation, yields as high as 10t/ha can now be achieved with less water use and less need for fungicides. It is a significant advance on the 2.5–3 tonnes/ha being achieved in the 1970s. The harvest months for asparagus are October to December, which doesn’t clash with the main seasonal demand for labour in the bay.

NECK PAIN?

Real Hope For Long Term Sufferers

After twelve years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now established a long term track record with thousands of people throughout New Zealand. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. To him surgery was never an option as long as he still could walk, there was hope. “While on an overseas trip I discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups for the first time, when I tried it, the pain completely disappeared and I was pain free for about 30 minutes. I never would have believed it would fix me completely as specialists had told me it was irreversible, but I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some welcome relief”. To my surprise the more I used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months the pain was completely gone, after spending large amounts of money on everything I could find I finally had found something that worked and it was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time.

Inversion NZ Ltd 0800 62 62 83 www.inversionnz.co.nz

Once I was sure it really worked I decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand to help spread awareness of the one thing that truly helped me. Over the years I have helped tens of thousands of people in New Zealand get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation and lots more.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability

The results from what inversion does is nothing short of miraculous in areas we never thought possible, I believe there is a place for these in every single home regardless of if you have back issues or not. We have introduced them into a number of schools which are using them for their special needs children, the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent. What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older. I would not have believed the results had I not tried it for myself, and I would still be suffering to this day. This is why we travel the country showing people and letting them see for themselves how great it is and how life can be once your pain free again

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs:

It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when

muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

EDUCATION Experience to succeed Eastern Institute of Technology horticulture graduates are among those who have their sights fixed firmly on a place in the Hawke’s Bay Young Fruitgrower Competition, which is run in conjunction with the National Horticulture Field Days. The sector finals are set for Napier on August 21–22. It aims to inspire and acknowledge the talents of young people employed in the fruit sector in the Hawke’s Bay region — the nation’s fruit bowl. The competition is a challenging and fun-filled event. During the field day, competitors take part in a quiz and then demonstrate practical and theoretical skills, which are assessed at industrysponsored testing stations. For a little light relief, there is a ‘hortisports’ section where competitors are challenged to complete a range of novelty tasks. The winner of the competition will go on to represent Hawke’s Bay at the sector final for the New Zealand Young Grower of the Year in Tauranga in

October. In preliminary events, held just as Hawke’s Bay Farming Lifestyles went to press, one woman, Deanna Muir, was competing against seven men. Deanna is currently studying a NZ Diploma in Horticulture (Level 5, Fruit Production) and is thrilled to participate. “It is a great opportunity to test my knowledge against others in the industry. I am looking forward to meeting new people and hopefully learning a thing or two along the way,” she said. EIT’s School of Primary Industries is optimistic that in the future more women will follow Deanna’s lead. Groundbreaking pain relief A trial of a unique pain relief treatment for calves undergoing disbudding procedures has the potential to improve the welfare of millions of New Zealand calves. Disbudding is a common, but potentially painful procedure carried out by farmers, vets and technicians. Up to two million calves are disbudded in New Zealand every year, and it commonly involves the use of a hot iron to cauterise and remove horn-producing cells before they fuse and grow into horns. The groundbreaking treatment, known as Tri-Solfen, was initially developed in Australia for use in sheep and is being distributed in New Zealand by Bayer. The local anaesthetic and antiseptic topical liquid provides quick pain relief when applied to a wound, and controls and reduces the likelihood of infections and haemorrhaging. Bayer senior technical services veterinarian Dr Kirstie Inglis says the product will make a big difference to calves on Kiwi farms. “Tri-Solfen is really quite groundbreaking for New Zealand. It is the first time we have had a topical local anaesthetic to use on disbudded calves, available in the market. “It contains two types of anaesthetic, a shorter acting one and a longer acting one — combined with adrenaline and an antiseptic. Used straight after disbudding Tri-Solfen will make a huge difference to calves at that time of year

when they are young and vulnerable, and in need of the best start in life.” Independent lead researcher in the trial Dr Emma Cuttance, from VetEnt Research, says disbudding is known to be incredibly painful for calves. “We found the Tri-Solfen product to be fantastic in reducing the pain that calves were experiencing following disbudding — out to 22 hours. In some study groups, there was a 90 per cent reduction in marked pain response when compared to the control group, which is extraordinary. “We have actually got something that could positively impact the welfare of millions of calves, and I think that is such an exciting breakthrough for animal health and something I am proud to be involved with.” In October, legislation will come into force, which, at a minimum, requires a local anaesthetic nerve block to be applied prior to the disbudding procedure. Independent vets involved in the Tri-Solfen trial concluded that using just a pre-procedural local anaesthetic nerve block alone just wasn’t enough. Tri-Solfen applied to calves immediately after disbudding had a positive effect on their behavioural responses and pain sensitivity for at least 22 hours.

Another important welfare outcome of the trial showed there were positive effects for calves that were disbudded under sedation compared with calves disbudded without sedation. “I think there really is a need for the veterinary

industry to take a closer look at how much pain calves are actually in during disbudding,” says Dr Inglis. Tri-Solfen can also be used for pain relief on lambs following docking and on calves following castration.

Why Use Hutches or Pens?

Factors that influence calf mortality/antibiotic usage.

• Healthy outdoor environment • Calves separated so less disease risk and build immunity • Per calf by far most cost effective & no planning required • Lowest calf mortality rates • Lower Antibiotic usage/better calf welfare • Can be used with calf feeders (watch this space) • Pens: indoor feeding and effective use of space • Better working environment

• Ventilation: A baby calf must have fresh clean low ammonia air. • Bedding: Calf must have a clean comfortable dry bed. • Temperature: Must have a stable temperature (no quick changes) • Feed: Feed correctly from colostrum to concentrate. • Management: Have the correct systems (calf housing & feeding equipment) & management procedures to handle all above any size of farm. To be able to easily and economically grow as the dairy operation grows. New Zealand and Australian Distributor
