Winter is a good time to plant trees to provide shelter for stock

“What might be suitable in Northland, for example, may not be appropriate for more southern regions,” he says. “Regional councils might also have funding available to help with planting or fencing-off programmes. Local nurseries are also a font of knowledge about the suitability of trees and shrubs for different climates, environments, sites, soil types and uses. New Zealand Farm Forestry Association also has valuable resources on its website. “When considering trees for shelter, think about the wind direction of both cold and desiccating winds. “Wind chill will increase the metabolic rate of livestock, and when this is combined with pregnancy or lactation, feed demand will be increased significantly, which isn’t ideal in a year where feed supplies are limited. “Having set areas where animals are protected from wind chill could be very valuable, and in mid-summer, shelter trees will protect pasture from hot, dry winds. Shelter belts will slow down the wind speed and can protect pasture

and enhance pasture growth to quite a surprising distance.” While it can be challenging to be thinking about shade in the middle of winter, Will says farmers will have a good idea of where on their farm shade trees would be beneficial. “Providing good shade during the heat of summer will help reduce water demand by livestock. An ideal shade tree will have height and plenty of room underneath, so the shadow moves in line with the sun, providing shade throughout the day. “Again, local nurseries or regional authorities will be able to provide advice on suitable shade trees options for specific sites. “As well as providing shade, trees such as poplars and willows help stabilise soil and can be used as an emergency feed during feed shortages. Trees can also be of value for timber or firewood at the end of their lifetime.” For more information — go to www.beeflambnz.com/knowledge-hub.

Rural Advisory Group cochair Lochie MacGillivray says the recent rainfall is good for farmers across the region who have experienced a particularly prolonged drought. “As the weather has been both consistent and mild, it will generate higher than average pasture growth. The consequence of this will be a boost in helping our farmers’ ability to navigate through this winter,” says Mr MacGillivray. “While this rain has been marvellous, for many it has come too late in the season, and the impacts of the drought will remain for some time. Many farms will be still facing a significant feed deficit even with this higher than normal pasture growth. The Rural Advisory Group is raising funds to support the transportation of feed to farmers — you can support our farming community with our givealittle appeal. Farmers who feel that they are in this feed deficit position are encouraged to ring the Beef & Lamb feed budget support number on 0800 233 352.” Find out about the advice and support on offer on the regional council’s

“The rain is welcome and putting the region back on track. We had a solid amount of rain in mid-June. Up to 200mm in the western ranges and 25–40mm on the Ruataniwha and Heretaunga Plains so rainfall totals are looking a lot healthier,” says Hawke’s Bay Regional Council air quality scientist Dr Kathleen Kozyniak. “We are into above normal rainfall territory for our June totals, and the Kaweka and Ruahine ranges have hit that mark. The only area of the region that is still below normal is northern Hawke’s Bay. Soil moisture has recovered well and in most places is above median levels and hit field capacity. “River flows are back to normal, and we will know later on whether groundwater levels have come back to normal levels for the time of year. Winter recharge of our aquifers is important to set us up for spring and summer. “If the aquifers are around normal we’ll be satisfied though we haven’t caught up in terms of annual rainfall for the July to June year, sitting at about 70 per cent currently. We are getting a series of lows tracking across northern NZ, which is keeping an easterly flow over Hawke’s Bay and we can expect modest amounts of rain later this week.”

I have had a lot of impromptu concerts, but I am known more as a horse trainer here,” says Teresa. “I am a problem solver and help people with their horses, or horses who

are having problems with their people — which is often the case. “It is good to see them in their own environment. Horses are a unique species, and I start with groundwork and communication, which is not natural to people. Once they learn how to communicate through spatial awareness, it is a sweet experience. “When you learn to make the horse feel secure, it is much more fun for everyone. spatial thing, like a flight zone, a bubble of air — it is not natural to people, and often a person doesn’t understand that a horse is trying to check that out with them. “The horse may step on their foot to move the person, and the person gets grumpy. The horse gets confused and then doesn’t know who should move first. It is communication, and the animal needs to feel safe and secure, and that scales up in the riding as well. “I teach about feeding horses properly because I had to learn how to feed my horse here. “In the States, it is a more natural environment. Horses can get illnesses like laminitis, gut issues, and spores because they are not ruminants. You need to figure out ways to feed them like creating track systems where there is not much fodder. Let them out to graze for short periods and don’t let them have the richer grasses. “When you start feeling like you are having issues then it is good to call me. Large animals can be frightening — it’s not like a dog jumping up on you. They are big, powerful and complex creatures. “Some are ridden often, so they are more broke than others. Owners may be busy working and lucky to get six hours a week to ride, leaving the horses in the paddock. “They want to get out and work so you have to hook it to be mentally with you, then they are your friend and will come to you at the gate. “There are a lot of simple but complex things, and we have developed techniques that have mimicked a horse’s behaviour. “I love working out solutions for people and their horses and teach them

how to read their horse. I have a lot of tips on halter breaking a youngster and have passed the torch of starting horses to a younger woman, Taryn Kyd of Vaquero Views. We have worked together for nine years, and in Auckland, I work in her large facility. In Hawke’s Bay, I offer a variety of services and can help start a horse and work with started horses. “I have many stories of people not understanding their horse and becoming exceptional when guided in the right direction. “I work with anyone who is keen to know more — they don’t need to be into competing or have a fancy animal. I am happy to deal with a donkey. It is not about competition with me, it is about individual relationships with horses, and all that requires is a desire — happy horse, happy person. “I believe you never retire — you work and retire at the same time. Part of the reason I left the music business is horses are my first passion and something I can do as I get older. It keeps me young and happy, and I love helping. “It gives you purpose as animals are so important to their owners. “When people worry about their animal, they get stressed. I am pleased to be in New Zealand and thank my lucky stars that I can live and work horses. “Follow my Facebook pages or website, NZ Horse Help or NZ Horse Help Hawkes Bay. “I am very accessible, approachable and clear with instructions when helping people understand their animals.” Follow Teresa on her website or Facebook pages NZ Horse Help Hawkes Bay and NZ Horse Help.

THE SHAREMILKERS’

“W

e have been targeting for this for a while and came second last year. We did everything we could to improve our weaknesses and presentation, and it worked,” says Nick. The awards were announced via video link on the region’s Facebook page because of the Covid-19 lockdown. “We don’t come from farming backgrounds and have entered several competitions. I won the 2014 New Zealand Dairy Manager of the Year and was runner-up in the Hawke’s Bay/ Wairarapa Share Farmer category last year. The awards have been a great opportunity to prove ourselves. We wouldn’t have the job we have now if it wasn’t for the exposure we have had through the NZDIA programme. “We are very people-focussed, and our staff are a very important asset to

our business. Our 2IC Leon McDonald, has been with us for a few seasons and placed second in the competition. Our apprentice Peter Skinner started here this season. “We decided instead of having parttime staff we would train someone. It has worked well with people having more time off, with less worry having to hire temporary relief staff and we enjoy training him. “We are 50/50 sharemilkers with 440 cows on Barry and Carol McNeil’s 150ha property in Woodville with Kiwi cross cows and a few purebred Friesians and Jerseys. We get the best of both worlds — the litres from the Friesians and the high fat from Jerseys. The farm is threequarters flat and quarter rolling to steep. With breeding, I aim for three-quarter Jersey and quarter Friesian because they are a nice manageable size.

“Rose manages the admin, health and safety and our environmental Tiaki plan through Fonterra and the regional council. It is our second year, and we have planted 500 mixed native plants and planned our waterway management. Experts come and help identify hotspots for planting and planning that we may not have thought of. They provide native plants for free, and we supply the labour. We have also retired a couple of steep areas that we got contractors to plant with pine trees.” Nick and Rose, 33 and 27 years old respectively, enjoy farming and managing their own business. ”We are passionate about breeding and enjoy the challenges farming presents. I am an advocate for the dairy industry, the Tararua Federated Farmers Sharemilker Representative and also on the Federated Farmers National Executive for sharemilkers. “I was born and bred in town. Dad was a teacher and mum a nurse. Family friends had farms, and I did a year training on a farm and progressed from there. Rose was born in Perth, Australia, and we met and married there. She is a qualified early childhood and primary school teacher. Her parents are in the police force. “We do zero topping and cropping and run a system three. Our feed is homegrown grass on the miking platform or grass silage and hay from the runoff. A small amount of palm kernel is used when needed, but we limit this to protect our milk. We moved away from winter crops as they are messy

Creating an

ANIMAL REFUGE by Ann van Engelen With a vision to help animals of all shapes and sizes from across New Zealand get out of abusive situations alongside their owners, construction is underway for a pet refuge with farmers across the country offering to support large animals when necessary.

“I

became aware that some people experiencing family violence delay leaving out of fear for their pets’ lives and I want to help them,” says Pet Refuge founder Julie Chapman. “Often, victims have to choose between their safety and the safety of their pets as pets are part of their family. The refuge will take smaller animals like dogs, cats, and rabbits with farmers around the country ready to care for larger animals such as horses, pigs, goats and cows. “I am the founder of KidsCan helping children in school with necessities such as food and footwear, and we participated in research last year with Women’s Refuge. Nine hundred women answered that they had experienced

pet abuse alongside family violence. It showed dogs were the most abused, followed by cats, cows and horses. Twenty-three per cent had a pet killed by a partner. Fifty-three per cent delayed leaving to try and keep their pet safe, and 73 per cent would have left sooner if there was a place for their pet to go. “I love animals, and it has been a long-term dream to help them in some way, but I didn’t want to duplicate rescue services that already exist. Our intention is for the refuge to be secure in the permanent location for future generations.” The small animal shelter is on five acres at a secret location in the North Island. It will take up to 24 dogs, 35 cats and 15 smaller animals including rabbits, guinea pigs and birds.

Julie Chapman is creating a haven for animals that are in need of accommodation when families leave abusive relationships

to heal. The cold hard facts are the majority of abuse is men against women and children, and New Zealand has the highest rate of family violence reporting in the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). One in three women will experience partner violence at some point in their life, and 14 are killed by their partners or expartners each year. We acknowledge men are also victims of abuse, and we will certainly take their pets. “We have modelled our programmes on the RSPCA New South Wales programme. One of their team came to us for six months to help pull the

Y,

programme together to ensure we can deal with these situations in the correct way. We will be holding pets for up to four months so our clients can take comfort in knowing their pets are looked after and getting the help they need to recover from their trauma. “We couldn’t do this without the farmers’ support and are very grateful as this is another gap that we can fill to support families to get away from the violence that impacts lives for a very long time.” To offer help for large animals or for more information, go to petrefuge.org. nz or the Pet Refuge NZ Facebook page.

“We will open later this year, and once we are up and running, we would like to establish one in the South Island. We are building a network of safe farms around New Zealand to house the larger animals, including horses, cows, sheep, alpaca and pigs. We have more than 50 farmers ready to take large animals and care for them. “On farms, people have pet cows, sheep or other large animals, and it is proven that hurting animals is a means of control in family violence. The abuser is saying ‘if I can do this to the cow, horse, goat or dog, I can do this to you’. There are many stories of children witnessing their pets being tortured, abused or killed, and that has a severe effect on a child’s mental health and wellbeing. “We will take pet referrals from Women’s Refuge, police and family violence organisations. Paid animal welfare staff will run the shelter, and caseworkers will work with victims. This was an unmet social issue and will give animals temporary housing so their families can leave the abusive situation. Most safe houses don’t allow pets so this removes one of the barriers that people face when they want to secure their own safety. They will be able to all leave together.” The animals will receive behaviour therapy, vet care, food and safety until they can be reunited with owners. “We would like to see more landlords be open to renting to people with pets so they can remain together as this helps everyone, including the animals,

ADVERTORIAL

Can I improve my Joints? (Part two) by John Arts

Last edition, I mentioned a client who went from having very sore knees to know being able to move with much greater freedom. We looked at the first lesson we can learn from this. All healing comes from specific healing systems in our body. We also saw that these healing systems could be restricted or even dormant if our diets tip the scales in the wrong direction. The second lesson is very important. The gap between healing and continued disease is often much less than you think. What surprised my client is how little he actually had to do to activate the healing capacity in his knees. The first step is to slow or stop unwanted inflammation. That does mean you need to think about foods, but in most cases, it is simply substituting one food for another. It can be swapping the inflammatory high omega-6 cooking oils for olive oil and adding fish oil supplements. The rest of his programme was not difficult. I started him on an initially high dose of my joint formula. That meant that initially, he was getting 1,600mg of high grade (small molecular size) chondroitin sulphate with 1,600 mg

of glucosamine sulphate and 400mg of a 95% bioactive curcumin (from turmeric) extract. Chondroitin is the most important as it directly improves the health of cells that repair and maintain cartilage. Curcumin targeted inflammation while glucosamine helped with joint function. It sounds complex, but all this meant was after breakfast, taking two of the joint capsules and three fish oil then repeating this in the evening. Yes, there is the discipline of having to take the supplements and, of course, fitting these into his budget. The results meant he has much less pain and more mobility. John Arts comments:

An extraordinary rural adventure by Paul Campbell

An extensive autobiography by the scion of a Hawke’s Bay farming family, with extensive connections and history from Southern and Central Hawke’s Bay through to Fern Hill and beyond has been launched, celebrating some seven decades of rural life. Bruce Galloway, now 78, was born the youngest of four children, in 1942. His parents owned a 530-acre sheep and beef farm south of Dannevirke, at Waiaruhe. In those days, it was home to a school and a dairy factory. Both have since gone. He went on to own and work 11 different farms across the North Island. Bruce also was a bit of a pioneer Hawke’s Bay airman and his book, The Flying Farmer, is an extensive account of aviation adventures as well as a detailed account of breaking in farms and overall life on the land. Ray Curle of publishing house, Wild Side, described the book as “a New Zealand farmer’s memoir — like nothing you have read before. “A fair dinkum Kiwi bloke who broke-in farms the hard way had heaps of misadventures and close calls, including Bruce Galloway signs for a book launch customer crashing his Cessna 182 aeroplane and just surviving to tell the outside of the chopper. I was told later they tied me on with a rope and tied tale. Here’s an excerpt from his book. ‘We had been told the wind was the blanket down with baling twine. BUSINESS PROFILE

Rural community support

Robby Smith, general manager of Stevenson and Taylor, and his team believe in the local community, including primary sector workers, and are ready to help people in the industry return to normal business. “It has been an exceptional, and stressful, year for Hawke’s Bay with Covid and a particularly harsh drought to cope with,” says Robby. “I believe the drought is having more of a negative impact than the pandemic. While there will be hard times ahead, I predict New Zealand will be in a very strong position and will lead the world in growing high-quality produce within 18 months. “We recently refurbished an old grain feeder for sheep that was donated by a customer towards the drought relief. It will be moved around to help farmers who are struggling with feed. It is oneway Stevenson and Taylor can give back to the community. As an essential service during lockdown, with 39 fulltime staff, we continued to operate with a small team while others worked from home. I would like to thank our staff and customers for their support.”

Stevenson and Taylor is well equipped with sales, diesel service, engineering, par ts and outdoor equipment departments under the one roof on Takapau Road. Shareholders and owners are on the team. Robby has been with the company for more than 20 years. Brett Stevenson is the service tech/director and grandson of founding partner Bill Stevenson while Duncan Harding is head sales consultant. “Our team is here to get the community moving and see farms and businesses fully operational. We have new and used tractors and farm machinery available for sale from seed drills, cultivation gear, hay and harvest equipment to feed out gear. “Here at Stevenson and Taylor, we are proud to be the home of Case IH Tractors in Hawke’s Bay. We have been selling and servicing Case IH tractors since we started in 1951. We sell new

Innovations need breathing space by Andy Bryenton

With the nation’s largest collective agricultural event on hold, thanks to coronavirus precautions, a whole year of farming and agricultural innovation have not just disappeared. As in other nations, where the shows are even bigger and the crowds even larger, those stories and advancements need a place to shine. We’ve put together this ‘Field Day in your mailbox’ for the same reason patrons of the two biggest similar events in the world (Germany’s Agritechnica and the USA’s Minnesota State Fair) have also turned to other media to get their point across. With a widespread customer base hungry for any innovation that can pare dollars off the cost of farming, or add bulk to the bottom line, both of these shows are postponed until 2021. However, in a two-edged proposition, tech, which was first floated at November 2019’s Agritechnica is now coming onstream in New Zealand. The usually jam-packed Minnesota show’s sellers of giant ag machinery have taken to the internet and print media to tout their latest offerings.

New Zealand knows how to put on a field day, but the prestige of winning an engineering award at Agritechnica is the ‘holy grail’ of machinery and tractor designers, similar to the Tokyo or Geneva auto show for carmakers. Standout machines that have won innovation awards at the 2019 event were set to land in the Waikato this month. They are still there, at dealerships, and often just require a phone call to arrange a test drive. Similarly, the Minnesota State Fair is regarded as the biggest on Earth. Numbers exceeding the population of the South Island will pass through its gates each year, and it’s the USA’s showcase of the biggest in harvesters, tractors and implements. This year, a sense of personal safety has seen it

closed, amid mixed messages on Covid from the US government. “If there’s no fair this year, it’s because they love us and want to see Everyone next year,” said an associate of fair manager Jerry Hammer. “He’s right. That’s the heart of the matter. We want to see you all for many years to come, when we can celebrate in true state fair style.” How we can celebrate in style is to

celebrate the spirit of a proper field day. That means checking out all the latest and greatest in farming advancements here on paper, then supporting the local economy by calling the appropriate dealerships and putting them to work. This way, 2021 will be a field day for us all, as our rural sector shows the rest of the economy the way forward.

This year, the biggest mud pits, log craws and hill climbs of them all will go wanting, but with winter breathing icy down farmers’ necks the urge to put a reliable, capable new machine in the shed is front and centre. Many rural folks who operate a ute or off-roader for work purposes will find themselves at the end of a planned three or five-year stretch and at a loose end, wondering how to evaluate the best of the best without the back-to-back tests offered by a big trade show. The answer, of course, is to angle for an on-farm test at your place. That is ideal, as it lets you take a look at how a machine handles on the turf it’ll be tasked with taming. You as the owner, know about that body stretch by the back gate, the loose gravel behind the sheds, and that treacherous incline up to paddock three. Why run a simulation when you can see how it goes on the real thing? It’s also a good gauge of how a dealer feels about his product, and how close they really are to

It’s practical, they say. Certainly, it shows off some engineering and construction prowess and gives drivers a chance to see how today’s utes and off-roaders can handle the rough stuff. However, deep down, we know that trying out the ‘obstacle course’ test drives at field days or an ag fair is good, blokey fun.

Monitoring cow health and status Having the ability to monitor individual cow health and heat status is fast becoming a game-changer for New Zealand dairy farmers. James and Rosie Pelham are equity partners of Acer Properties in Putaruru. They are using Allflex collars to increase submission and conception rates, along with a move to full artificial breeding (AB). The couple purchased an Allflex monitoring system in August 2018, and they have never looked back. “We chose Allflex over competitors because it was proven technology and we preferred the software,” said James. The goal was to take the time commitment off James and Rosie and use the reliability of the collars to identify cows that are on heat. It’s also given them the confidence to use short gestation semen and tighten up their calving pattern. The collars have also been a valuable investment for Airport Farm owners Ed and Melissa Whiting in Stratford. They started with just the collars and have now installed an Allflex ‘Intelligate’ drafting gate to complete the system. “We have significantly improved

our cow health and calving is a breeze,” Ed says. They have climbed from 420kg/MS a cow to 545kg/MS by focussing on the cows that ruminate well and the ones that are healthy. However, the biggest change has been regarding people. “Mating is probably the easiest time of the year now. “Anyone can be milking, and the cows on heat are ready and waiting, all drafted out automatically by the Allflex gate.” Both farms no longer tail paint and would recommend the system to other farmers. They believe the savings around mating and improvements in milk production alone give the system a strong return on investment. “Allflex is a great company to deal with. We like working with them, they are always available with great support, and we feel like a customer.” For more information about Allflex monitoring systems, visit thegamechanger.farm.

Protection goes two ways by Paul Campbell

Kiwi tradesmen, as well as their customers, are protected under the Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA) in the rare case a disagreement may ensue, but this process may be limited during current alert levels. Talk to the relevant business in the first instance because with Covid-19 as a major unexpected event — usual services may not be possible. Businesses need to meet their obligations under the CGA, but it may be reasonable for a repair, replacement or refund to take longer to process under current conditions. If you pay a business to provide a service and it’s sub-standard, you can ask them to fix the problem under the act, but in turn, they might not be liable if the reason they couldn’t finish was something out of their control. The act covers services usually bought for personal or household use. There are, in fact, four guarantees that apply, including: A

Look after local trades by Paul Campbell

During the Covid-19 alert level two, it might be a good time to contribute to the country’s economic recovery from the battering of lockdown by spending a little on repairs or maintenance around your home or business at a time when tradespeople can visit your home for the necessary work to be carried out.

Check your tradesperson is licensed for the work you’re hiring them to do, because if not, you might not be insured for damage caused by poor workmanship or even you may not be able to get the certificates you’ll need for council signoff if the work required consent. You may even have problems when it’s time to sell your home. The government’s ‘rescue’ budget is aimed at ensuring New Zealand businesses, and that includes a wide variety of Kiwi ‘tradies’, among them

builders, electricians. plumbers, gasfitters and drain layers, as well as architects and engineers, get back up and running. With borders closed and likely to stay that way for some time to come, it’s time to spend our funds close to home to support local trades and get money circulating once again. In terms of an old western saying — “support your local sheriff.”

Be aware tradespeople do not need to wear personal protective equipment (such as face masks), but they must keep a one-metre distance from those in the home. So, if the idea gets your green light, there are a few things to look out for. Always hire registered or licensed tradespeople. The sector is one of professionals, and they will make life easy in making sure estimates and quotes are well researched given that your working brief is clear. By all means, shop around and get written estimates or quotes from different companies and choose tradespeople that are recommended by others — ask friends and family, or check online reviews. If they have the experience doing the type of work you need it helps to find a good fit — you need someone who understands your vision and family situation, and who you can talk to easily. Good communication is the best way to avoid problems down the track.

Justin and Charlotte Bray are the proud new owners of Small Farm Services Hawke’s Bay after they bought the business from Murray Cranswick and Kirsty Caro in June 2020. Justin and Charlotte are both from farming stock having been born and bred on farms, Justin on a station in the Canterbury High Country and Charlotte on an East Coast farm in Southern Hawke’s Bay. Justin has lived and breathed farming from a very early age and has worked on many farms throughout New Zealand and Australia as well as driving agriculture machinery for contractors. A values-based education

BU

ADVERTORIAL

June 2020

Our world is in a continual state of change and now more than ever the decisions we make, the way we lead, the influence we impart on our world must be governed by a strongly ingrained set of values to reflect and guide us in challenging situations or moments of doubt. One of the purposes of education is to prepare students to thrive for the future — what may now seem like an uncertain future. The purpose of educators is to guide our young people to develop the skills to thrive, give them the time and tools to discover a direction and the ability to learn and adapt from their experiences. At Whanganui Collegiate School we develop the skill of building meaningful, trust-based relationships, the skill of effective conversations, of proactive wellbeing, of managing minds and the essential skill of taking 100% ownership for who they are, the decisions they make and the behaviour they choose — accountability and responsibility must go hand in glove. We give our students the opportunity to practise these skills in a safe environment, supported in their learning by teaching

∙ HOUSE & BUILDING WASHING ∙ MOSS, MOULD AND LICHEN TREATMENTS ∙ HIGH PRESSURE CLEANING ∙ GUTTER CLEANING & GUTTER PROTECTION ∙ EXTERIOR PEST CONTROL and pastoral staff. Today’s students are the next generation of business, political and community leaders. It is our responsibility to shape the way in which they understand, prepare for and respond to the world’s challenges both now and in the future.

Join us on one of our tour days or book a personalised tour to come and discover how Whanganui Collegiate School’s values-based education can benefit your son or daughter, now and for their future. Visit www.collegiate.school.nz.

When only the best will do! Become Self Sufficient!

by Andy Bryenton

When we call for help around the farm or home, there’s often the need for those who respond to bring their office with them, in the form of all the tools, technology and materials needed to get the job done right. In this quest for flexibility, the humble ute has become the weapon of choice. Australia vies with the USA as to who can claim the initial idea of making a flat-decked small utility vehicle out of a car. While the Detroit motor industry pioneered light trucks as early as the 1920s, these were designed for lugging loads in the big cities. Across in Aussie, our neighbours across the ditch were chopping down road cars to make vehicles suitable for the harsh conditions of the bush and farmlands. A favourite conversion was to chop a Rolls Royce and make it into a flat deck. Why desecrate a luxury motor? That’s because the superior engineering used in the Rolls made it able to withstand dust, sand, heat and terrible roads. These same machines were used as armoured cars in the first world war. By 1936, Ford Australia was offering their own custom factory-built ute. Here in New Zealand, pre-war farm and business ‘chop jobs’ include Daimlers, Lanchesters and even an ambulance or two. Once we got hold of the offerings

The classic Kiwi and Aussie ute was a style beloved of our tradespeople, but an eventual victim of changing trends

from Ford and Holden, there was no turning back. Tradespeople from all professions took to the car cab, wellside back deck combo and set out to build post-war suburbia. The alternative US ‘pickup’ style on a ladder chassis has become the norm today but attempts to introduce the antipodean style created at least a couple of classics overseas. The Chevrolet El Camino debuted in 1959 and has become a sought-after collectors’ item in the States, while the

smaller, derivative Subaru Brat mini-ute brought four-wheel drive to the table and was sold from 1978 clear through to 1994. Sadly, the ‘tradies’ ute’ style is now a thing of the past, with the last examples, by Holden, rolling off the production line in 2017. Today, compact pickup trucks dominate, but there’s still a place in our hearts for the little trucks, which so often saved the day, bringing plumbers, electricians, roofers and builders around to solve our problems.
