Rural health assistance underway by Paul Campbell
Rural mental health has often been raised as a community concern in what is often a high-stress environment, especially in the current era of changing rules and regulations affecting the industry — SNAs and water being two to mention.

NZ Young Farmers CEO Lynda Coppersmith
Now the government has stepped in to offer some help in an initiative funded by the Ministry for Primary Industries. New Zealand Young Farmers has been allocated $40,000 to organise events in regional areas featuring guest speakers, activities and skill-building sessions for young people in rural industries. “The mental and physical wellbeing of young people is a big focus of our organisation and essential for the ongoing viability of many rural communities,” says NZ Young Farmers chief executive Lynda Coppersmith. “This programme will increase awareness of the wellbeing support and resources available and give young people the confidence to access them.” Provisional figures released by the Chief Coroner show 654 people died in New Zealand from suicide in 2019–20, and almost one-third (205 people) were under the age of 30. The events will harness the resources and expertise of existing wellbeing support providers, such as Farmstrong, Rural Support Trusts and the awardwinning Good Yarn workshops. MPI was allocated $1.1 million last year to deliver extra wellbeing support

services for three years to complement those provided by Rural Support Trusts “It’s important we continue our efforts to give people the skills to look after their wellbeing, manage stress and to recognise and openly talk about mental health,” says MPI’s director of rural communities and farming support Nick Story. Young Farmers has a network of 70 clubs, which provide an opportunity for young people to make friends, network, upskill and socialise. One of the wellbeing events underway at present is a six-week boot camp at Longburn in Manawatu, which runs until mid-July, while Waikato and Bay of Plenty have activities associated with the National Field Days. “Winter is a great time for a boot camp to help build farmers’ fitness ahead of calving and lambing, which is a busy time on-farm. It also gives us an opportunity to share wellbeing tips, such as nutritional advice, to help our rural community get through,” said Young Farmers member Kate Stewart. Other events are planned for Kaihu, Opuawhanga, Waiharara, Hamilton, Gisborne, Pahiatua, Lincoln, Timaru and Gore.

Avocados hit record values by Paul Campbell
Despite some troubles in getting horticulture industry crops to market, with a shortage of pickers plaguing some sections of the industry in Hawke’s Bay, the outlook for the avocado growing sector has recently got a whole lot brighter with record prices mainly driven by exports.

A combination of a short Australian domestic avocado supply and good New Zealand export pack-outs contributed to the increase. Around 500,000 trays of avocados were exported to eight markets across Asia. Of those, Thailand was the largest market, followed by Taiwan and Singapore. Planning is underway to

Avocados are a growth industry locally. Growers can take heart in the news that avocado value’s hit $227 million in the 2020–21 season, with $167 million delivered by exports and $60 million in local sales, the Covid pandemic notwithstanding. “This is an extraordinary result for the avocado industry,” says NZ Avocado CEO Jen Scoular. “Facing the season with Covid lockdowns, significant freight disruption, an inability to meet face to face with customers and a small fruit profile, it is a credit to the entire value chain to achieve this record result.” Last season produced a record export volume and total crop volume. Forty-four thousand tonnes of avocados were harvested, with 5.1 million trays sent to 11 export markets, an increase of 10% on the previous season. NZ Avocado Growers’ Association chair Linda Flegg says: “Returns to growers for export and domestic avocados were very pleasing given the uncertainty at the beginning of the season around the impacts of Covid on our markets, and the disruption to global freight and logistics. “Our avocado exporters and NZ marketers did extremely well to achieve

Shepherding to management by Ann van Engelen
East Coast Young Farmers Club chairperson Emma Lewin has been in the sheep farming industry for 10 years and is enjoying working her way up to management.
“I
grew up in Bulls with my parents owning the corner dairy. Being a small country town meant I was able to milk cows in the school holidays for people,” says Emma. “I was at Fielding High School and went on a taster course with Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre and fell in love with farming. I started the course full-time when I was 17 years old.“ Emma’s first shepherding job was in the South Island up the Rakaia Gorge. “I have always enjoyed learning about soil, pasture and seeing animals grow. I am now a block manager at Takapau on an intensive lamb finishing operation.
“We will have 12,500 lambs next month along with 60 bulls that we are finishing. This year we purchased the bulls early as they were inexpensive to buy. We source the lambs at 30– 32kg live weight. We split them out in September and October with the males at 50kg and the ewe lambs at 46kg for ewe lambs. “It takes up to five months depending on the size of the sheep and how fast they grow. We start sending lambs to the works in August, with the majority going in October. “I started here as a shepherd and now manage two blocks. I coordinate

and animal preparation for the works. This includes weighing lambs. “A lot of my job is attention to detail and ensuring the animals are shifted before they get hungry. When the lambs arrive on-farm in May or June, they go on to crop or the hills. “Once we are fully stocked, they come on to the feed platform in July. We grow annual or two-year grasses. Looking after the pasture growth is important to the job. The most common variety of annual in New Zealand is Italian ryegrass. It produces a lot more grass each year but doesn’t live as long as perennials. “I keep my soil maintained with four small applications of nitrogen fertiliser, a nitrogen and superphosphate and an annual application of lime. “Each block is beside the meat works, so I walk all my lambs there.

Nothing gets trucked, and that makes us a bit special.” Emma has been involved in Young Farmers for 10 years. “I have four Huntaway dogs that I trained up and borrow others if I need the extra help. I advocate for every second weekend off-farm so staff can have a decent break. I feel if you are always on-farm, your attitude and enthusiasm breaks down a bit. “When I moved to the South Island, I didn’t know anyone, and other shepherds encouraged me along to a club they were starting as I lived in an isolated location, and the rest is history. “As a social organisation for farmers and non-farmers, the clubs are great
for getting together monthly to have a yarn, a feed and make friends. I have made lifelong friends through the club, and a lot of people find jobs from knowing people. “We go to events and Young Farmer competitions as a way to test our ability amongst our peers. We do clay bird shooting, fencing, stock judging and debating. We encourage everyone to have a go and learn. “The clubs fundraise all year so we can subsidise things. People can go to the East Coast NZ Young Farmers Facebook page to find a club near them. “I love farming. It is awesome as a lifestyle and career. I have never struggled being a female in a male-

The Good Baby returns
by Ann van Engelen
At nine years old, Pipiwai farm girl and Northland Rescue Helicopter ambassador Madison Macmillan has released her third book in the Good Baby children’s series called the Good Baby and the Unicorn. Madison published her first book in 2018 at seven years old called The Good Baby and The Bad Hippo, which she wrote on her way home from school one day. She released The Good Baby and the Hairy Monster in 2019 and has, so far, donated $1,000 of book sales to the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service. “When I was in year two, my teacher read a book about a Bad Baby and a Good Hippo, and it inspired me,” says Madison. “I liked the way the author wrote and how my teacher expressed it. I came up with the Good Baby idea on the way home from school. The Bad Hippo story is about being honest and the Hairy Monster in the second book is my cat, Boris. “My friend and I came up with the unicorn idea as we go on adventures together on my family farm. The Good Baby and the Unicorn is about the unicorn not having many friends because he looks different with a horn on his head. “They become friends and rescue a tadpole in a storm and put it back into its home. The tadpole is also different. I hope the book helps people take care of others who may be different. “I donate money from my book sales to the Northland Rescue Chopper so

“I come up with ideas from things around me. My next book is the Good Baby and the Naughty Grandma, and the fifth book will be the Good Baby and the Kauri Snail. Adam, my dad’s friend, does the artwork. He is a fireman, and having him help is really nice. “I also like taking care of the sheep and chickens, playing hockey and doing gymnastics. “I love living on the farm and helping my grandad move the cows, feed out the
hay, and going around the property on my go-kart to do my chores. “I hope other young people will try writing as well, even if they don’t publish their books. “I think as I grow older, I will write a chapter book but am not sure I will publish it.” We have two The Good Baby and the Unicorn books to give away. and I am super happy with how they are both progressing. “Recon is definitely more confident than Mana. He already allows me to halter him in the paddock, rub and touch his body and pick up his feet. I have also added obstacles into the round pen including a narrow track of cones for them to work with.” Tori is now introducing jackets, tarpaulins and items that make noise to help the horses get used to different noises. “I will eventually add a cover and begin to get Recon used to having a person on his back. This includes moving him in a horse float and I am not sure if six months is enough time for him to gain confidence. He needs to be safe and confident to be handled.” Mana is also gaining confidence and allowing Tori to touch his head and shoulders and follows her around at liberty. “I have other horses on the property but as Recon and Mana are stallions, only the geldings get to be close to them. I am planning to introduce another horse to their paddock soon. We are keeping the mares away as we don’t want to breed. Both horses will be gelded as that is a requirement when you adopt a stallion/colt from the Kaimanawa muster. “Horse socialising isn’t normally an issue as they live in a family band. It is humans they are not used to. Their personalities are coming out now and Recon lives up to his name. If he isn’t sure about something he hangs back and hides behind Mana watching and observing. “He is very thoughtful with his processes and when he has thought about it he will make a move to come and see the new thing or try what you are asking him to do. “Mana looks like the more confident one as he throws himself in boots and all but doesn’t think first. At times he gets himself in a pickle and gets scared and regrets his decision. He then takes time to regain confidence so I am working on helping him to think about his decisions. “Recon is slightly resistant to pressure with me picking up his feet but he hasn’t been a problem. “Neither horse is aggressive but if you are too quick and try to force the subject too hard or fast you can see

Where students thrive by Lindsey Robinson
Once a necessity, now a preference, students thrive on the academic, sporting, cultural, service and leadership opportunities made possible by boarding. Students will tell you that their house is more than where they stay, it quickly becomes a connection for life. With four boys’ houses and two girls’ houses, Whanganui Collegiate School is the leading co-educational boarding and day school in the lower North Island. “Boys and girls think, problem-solve and react differently in social situations and therefore, they learn from each other’s differences. At this school, boys and girls learn to support each other, to work together, and as a result are well equipped for life after collegiate — it is a co-educational world,” says headmaster Wayne Brown. “All students require quality teaching and personalised learning. At
collegiate, celebrating diverse learning is at the forefront of what we do, with a focus on empowering students with the academic, social and personal skills required to study and achieve. “More importantly, Whanganui Collegiate School is where families are united,” says Brown. Parents can support all their children during the same weekend. Numeracy versus mathematics For the last 20 odd years, teachers have been using the numeracy approach from the Ministry of Education to teach primary children about using numbers. “Let’s differentiate between numeracy and mathematics,” says Central Hawkes’ Bay in2learning director Shelley Harrison. “The numeracy approach gives students many strategies to calculate each of the basic four operations of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.” Examples include: • 49 + 23 = 50 + 22 = 72 • 17 x 4 = ( 10 x 4 ) + ( 7 x 4 ) = 40 + 28 = 68 • 86 – 29 = 80 – 20 = 60, 6 – 9 = -3, 60 – 3 = 57 • 84 ÷ 6 = (60 ÷ 6) + (24 ÷ 6) = 10 + 4 = 14 “These numeracy strategies are all worked across. Children who are adept at number calculations will come up with their own strategies and use them. “Average students can learn numeracy strategies, but I find those who struggle with numbers get confused with numeracy methods. Prior to numeracy, we had mathematics. “The number component of mathematics was known as arithmetic. Arithmetic was based on an understanding of place value. Students used column methods called algorithms to work out the basic operations. “Column calculations, known as the standard method, are still a part of the numeracy curriculum, but a very small part and are not introduced until year five. I find many students are not taught column calculations until years seven and eight, if at all. “If teachers are using the Developing Mathematical Inquiry Communities programme, children are not allowed to use the column method to solve the problem of the day. “Numeracy strategies were introduced to encourage students to think outside the square, rather than follow a set method

to calculate an answer. A recent Q + A television programme fronted by Jack Tame on mathematics showed a 20-year decline in our students’ abilities. “The proof he presented was from the Trends in International Maths and Science Study. The TIMSS results for 13-year-old New Zealand students in 1996 was 501. In 2003 it was 494; in 2011, it was 488, and by 2019, New Zealand had dropped to 482. Our place in the world has significantly declined as well. Singapore is highest at 616, Australia is 517, England 515 and we are only 482. “To me, these results show that the Numeracy Project is not doing the majority of students a good service. I suggest we begin by teaching basic facts, times tables and place value. “Then introduce column calculations and lastly learn the different strategies of numeracy. That way, most students will be able to accurately calculate the answer to a number problem in at least one way and some students in many ways.”

How curcumin helps osteoarthritis by John Arts
Without doubt the most important supplement ingredient for osteoarthritis is chondroitin sulphate. The reasons are simple. Chondroitin is a very important constituent of cartilage matrix. This matrix is secreted by specialised cells called chondrocytes. These amazing cells live in tiny cavities (lacunae) in cartilage. Their role is to maintain cartilage as it is damaged by wear and tear, injury and chemical processes that damage it. That being said, the health of cartilage is totally dependent on maintaining healthy chondrocytes. Unlike many other cell types, chondrocytes cannot be replaced. There are a number of antioxidants and trace minerals that directly affect the health of chondrocytes. The most important is curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric. Curcumin is perhaps the most studied natural health ingredient. As a potent antioxidant, it helps protect chondrocytes from damage from free radicals. Secondly, curcumin is anti-inflammatory which can help calm the joint by preventing unwanted fluid build-up. A two capsule daily dose of my joint formula
contains 800mg of both chondroitin and glucosamine and 200mg of Curcumin C3® Complex, plus 5mg of BioPerine®. In most cases, I will start clients on a double dose of two capsules twice daily for around six weeks. This provides double the above dosages; when combined with good quality fish oil these result in rapid effects. Last week I completed a review for a client I have been helping with very sore thumbs from osteoarthritis in his big thumb joint by the wrist. He reported a significant improvement over the past three months. Please contact me if you have joint problems, and I will put together a personalised joint health programme. In the vast majority of cases, we can get real improvements in flexibility and comfort. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Your rights come first by Andy Bryenton
Choosing a professional tradesperson is all about peace of mind, and the law surrounding what a competent tradie should provide hinges on them being educated and qualified. Here’s what the Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA) says about the levels of expertise and care a tradesperson should display when working on your project. You’re covered for these whether there’s a written contract or not. Remember, most of the time, you can spot ‘cowboys’ a mile away as they won’t be affiliated with the oversight body for their trade and might be cagey about sharing their qualifications. For example, they may not have a card identifying them as a proper plumber or a logo on their ute identifying them as a Licensed Building Practitioner if they’re not legitimate. The CGA says that no matter who you hire, you’re entitled to expect five things. The first is called reasonable skill. It means that the job must be at least as good as the work of a competent person with average skills and experience for that type of work. That average is determined by the standards set down
by each trade’s governing body or as defined in the apprenticeship course for learning the trade. The second is called reasonable care. It means that care and attention to details have been used. An otherwise technically competent job might not pass the ‘reasonable care’ test if it’s been finished off in a sloppy, unsightly or messy fashion. The third key part of the CGA says that a job must be fit for use — that it does what you need it to do. A plumber who installs a non-flushing toilet has not made it fit for use; neither has an electrician who installs an air conditioner that doesn’t heat or cool. The most important thing to note here is that for all of these factors, there’s no defence of lack of competence. If a tradesperson warns you in advance that they can’t guarantee reasonable skill, reasonable care or fitness for use as they are ‘not very good’ at a particular

kind of job, it’s best to not hire them. Real professionals know their stuff under the CGA. Fourth and fifth, even if there’s no quote or timeframe in place when the work starts, you’re entitled to have your job completed in a reasonable time

A town is the sum of its skills by Andy Bryenton
HAWKES BAY
A trawl through the advertising of yesteryear, especially in places where new settlements were being established, shows just how professional skills make a town. In those days, mayors would often post classified advertisements in city newspapers, or even newspapers in foreign countries, advertising the opportunities available in their new municipalities. As settlers moved west in the US, for example, or gold mining towns sprung up near valuable mineral deposits, the call went out that a career could be had as anything from the local doctor, lawyer or smith through to trades like farrier, cooper or wheelwright. People applied by letter, and the competition was sometimes fierce. More than one application letter was said to have been sent back with some cash tucked inside as a bribe. A position as a professional in a flourishing new town could make your legacy. You can see the conundrum those early civic leaders had. Starting with perhaps nothing but some arable land or a good water source, they needed to build a self-sufficient town fast. Things would fall apart quickly without public figures like a magistrate or a physician.
Families moving in wanted to know there was a good school teacher, the rule of law, and people to help with the hardships of self-sustaining rural life. Fast-forward to the present day, and small civic centres are still defined by the services on offer in the main street. It’s not for nothing that rural towns are often called service centres, as it’s the professionals who stand behind farmers and the primary industries that make them thrive. While it’s no longer the mayor’s job to personally write ads attracting new dentists, plumbers or vets to the district, you can bet that the concept of brain drain and the prospect of supporting the business community still weigh heavy on the mind of municipal councillors. While you can’t put a dollar value on the decision of a skilled professional to make their home and livelihood in your area, a basic calculation would start with the cost of their education or apprenticeship, then multiply by their years of experience. That’s what all of
Ph 027 698 4820 www.coastalpools.nz
In earlier times, towns sent out wanted ads to attract professionals to move in; to keep those skills, we need to refocus on local trade
our local professionals have invested in their community; to make sure those skills stay local, all we have to do is use them. A nugget of truth from those old pioneer days went like this; ‘make that shopping trip to the city by choice today, and you’ll be making it out of necessity next year’. That might be a quote from the time when ‘locally made’ meant hammered out on an anvil down the street, but it holds true to this very day.

Power Farming Hawke’s Bay win again After a challenging 2020, the Power Farming Hawke’s Bay team were able to relax at the annual awards ceremony and share the praise for winning a number of awards, including the Dealership of the Year, for the second year in a row. “The team also won the gold award for Service Department of the Year, a silver award for Administrator of the Year, and a gold award for Parts Department of the Year,” says dealer principal Aaron White. “The event was held at Waiheke Island where we all had a chance to relax with partners and celebrate their success. “I am over the moon and super proud of the whole team for their efforts and dedication over the last year.” The award was based on achievement of KPIs, market share, and sales volumes. The whole Hawke’s Bay team and their families will be celebrating their wins with a trip to Taupo in mid-July. “Of course, we couldn’t have won without the support of all our loyal customers who all receive a huge thank you from the team. Last year was a challenge with the drought and Covid, so the results are even more impressive. “This year, things are ticking along very well. Even before Fieldays®, we had the best-ever June for tractor sales. Mystery Creek. If people are considering buying new machinery, large or small, they need to be planning for their 2022 purchases now as stock is becoming a bit of an issue. This is due to a combination of factory outputs in Europe and shipping delays related to the pandemic. “There is a trend in clients buying orchard machinery that cuts down on the need for labour. Mechanical pruning machines are an example that helps cope with ongoing labour shortages, and it’s quicker than pruning by hand.

Another trend is the increasing sales of harvesting platforms for picking apples. “The team at Power Farming Hawke’s Bay will keep you growing.
