Hawke’s Bay Rescue chopper pilots and crew face all types of rescue situations on a daily basis

Last year, more than 9,500 missions were flown nationwide, which included 390 missions in the Hawke’s Bay Region. Westpac staff were out around the country last month raising funds for their local rescue helicopter service in the annual fundraising street appeal. “The rescue helicopter crews are working harder than ever to save lives,” says Westpac NZ chief executive Catherine McGrath. “Accident and illness can affect any of us at any time. Knowing help could be only minutes away, even in some of our most remote locations, is so important in a country as diverse as ours. “We have learned over the last couple of years that we can live, work and explore from almost anywhere — knowing the chopper crews are there for you when you need them is so important. “We know that living is getting more expensive, so every dollar donated is incredibly appreciated. All money donated in your region goes straight to your local chopper service, so you know that your donation is supporting your community.” Hawke’s Bay Rescue Helicopter Trust general manager Ian Wilmot says the public’s generosity has helped the trust keep improving the capabilities of its aircraft and crew. “It is great to see people out exploring our own beautiful country at every opportunity, but it does mean we have seen an increase in people needing our assistance,” says Mr Wilmot. “We are hugely grateful for everyone who is able to donate. Patoka youngster

“All money donated in your region goes straight to your local chopper service, your donation is supporting your community.” Ted and his mum Sally are especially appreciative of the Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter after Ted fell face-first into a broken Kanuka trunk while out exploring their farm. “Ted was bleeding profusely, and Sally, a trained vet, knew that damage to major blood vessels in the mouth and throat can be critical. She dialled 111 immediately, and a helicopter was dispatched, as the drive time into town would have been over an hour.” Once Ted and his mum arrived at ED, Ted needed specialist surgery to repair the damage inside his mouth. “We would encourage anyone who can to donate to this incredible organisation. We are so thankful for their care and professionalism and for helping our family when we needed them most,” says Sally. There are 15 rescue helicopter trusts nationwide. Westpac funds the marketing and administration costs of the Chopper Appeal, as well as distributing all funds raised back to donors’ local rescue helicopter trust. Waipari Station farmer Mark Warren uses regenerative methods alongside his beef and sheep operation; he aims to inform and encourage young farmers with knowledge of his hard-earned years. “If I can help someone else to be successful, I am happy to help,” says Mark. Mark has been farming since the early 1980s and has seen challenging and prosperous agricultural times. He wants others to draw from his knowledge and experience to navigate their careers more effectively. He is a big believer in working smarter, and values time spent reading about farming from good sources. He has seen the benefits of this philosophy in his own career. “I was racing around and decided to have a cup of tea and read the farming magazine. I came across an advertisement for the demand for a particular type of cattle. “Responding to that ad, we sold a mob of cattle for almost twice the selling price in the local market. It pays to take 10 minutes to read and learn from a good farmers’ magazine. Mark spends some time reading financial columns daily — he encourages others to do the same. “That is the low-hanging fruit; knowing what products are in demand and where to position yourself for them. Learn to manage your expenses and optimise your income. “Careful cash management and the rule of 72, which is a fundamental business rule. Dividing 72 by the interest rate will show the length of time until a debt doubles.”

Mark Warren (right) wants to impart his farming knowledge to future generations and expresses the value in taking time to read and learn from farming magazines

Mark wants to see more pragmatism from farmers and education about knowing what is best for the type of land that farms are on. In the 1980s, when people were being encouraged to get out of forestry, Mark started planting. “You need to be quick on your feet, rigorous and robust about reducing expenses. Look at what you have on

your farm that you could produce or diversify into, whether it be educating or entertaining people. “If you have some hill country land vulnerable to slipping, then plant poles. You can still graze under them and

sequester carbon, grow timber and help the land. “In the right place, forestry is a better land use than raising livestock. The beauty about it is that four out of the seven free inputs, Mother Nature provides.”

COMMUNION OF CHAMPIONS

“W

e’ve been here about 12 years, and as we were coming up to opening, we met our neighbours, got them on board and did some private tastings. We kept them in the loop with what we were planning,” says Godfrey. Before settling themselves into Maraekakaho, Hawke’s Bay, they travelled. One of the places they worked was Nigeria; it was there Godfrey ignited his passion for brewing. “In 2003 we were working in Nigeria. We were there for two years, and we would take a vacation every six months, so we came to New Zealand. Rachel’s dad was home-brewing

and I sampled some of his beers,” Godfrey said. “The Nigerian government had put an embargo on imported beer, so we were forced to drink the local product, which could be a bit dodgy. When I returned from one trip, I filled up a rucksack with a kit and kilo and decided I was going to make my own beer. That is what got the initial interest going.” They left Nigeria and stayed in the UK for a year before moving to Perth. Godfrey started his three-year home operation in Australia. During this time, he experimented with his brewing process and thought it had income potential.

“I could achieve the country lifestyle and have a property to bring people together and enjoy the company of others. It was a business that could sustain us,” Godfrey says. After having their first child in Australia, they searched for a property there but realised that New Zealand was a more viable option.

“I’m originally from New Zealand, and having my family here was a drawcard. It was going to work better for us,” Rachel says. “The brewery thing was only starting off in New Zealand, where we had seen it be successful in Western Australia.” “Our main goal was for Godfrey to not be working in the oil and gas sector that

In 2009 I quit my job, we came to New Zealand, bought a caravan and a car, and travelled around for five months,” Godfrey says. “We always wanted to own land, be semi-rural and be self-sufficient, and we realised there was a gap in Hawke’s Bay. There were not many craft breweries, and there was a lack of family-friendly venues. “We wanted to create a family-friendly environment, and having kids ourselves

made that important. All of our buildings are low-key — safari tents, repurposed caravans and garden sheds converted into toilets. It is low impact and not industrial-sized buildings.” They moved to the property in 2010, built the brewery in 2014 and opened the takeaway cellar door in 2015, and became fully licensed in 2017. “We do seasonal beer, but we do have the German Pilsner on tap year-round. It is a relaxed, chill vibe.” Rachel and Godfrey hold value in community and people; they embraced the locals and backed any fundraising opportunity in the area. They see Maraekakaho as an evergrowing locality.

ESKDALE’S

GREEN HEART BY AMY FIFITA

Eskdale School is a rural green-gold status Enviro School in Napier and is led by Sandra Rolls and Bryony Lovatt.

“I

t is important because of global warming. Sustainability is paramount and children are demanding action. We want to help look after the land and uphold Maori principles of Kaitiakitanga,” says Eskdale School Enviro School coordinator Bryony Lovatt. In 2007 Eskdale School became an Enviro School and gained the bronze status in 2008. It is in its fifteenth year and was instigated by teacher aid Jenny Mclay. “It was continued by Sandra and teacher Jo Drager. Jo has taken on other responsibilities and Sandra kept it going until I came on board in 2019. We call Sandra the green heart of the school.” “Sandra started working here from Nelson Park which was a bronze school

and has seen many systems and actions already in place.” “It was evident that the rural community wanted and supported this so she suggested we join the programme which was in its very early days. “I could see the results Sandra was getting. The shift in the children and wider school community’s thinking and behaviours and the projects they were leading around the school. I was keen to join in.” Enviro School’s values and principles are focussed on empowering students, sustainable learning, respecting diversity, sustainable communities and Māori perspectives. Part of the kaupapa is to create a sustainable world through community actions.

Bryony Lovatt sees the Enviro School programme as important due to the concerns about global warming

“I could see that happening at Eskdale School. I loved how we were already working in the community and planting trees in the new subdivision

Eskdale School has a team of students working on a variety of Enviro School projects

“These values sit well with both my teaching philosophy and my personal values so it was a no-brainer to become involved. Eskdale School has done projects such as creating new play areas, growing plants and cooking food as part of the Enviro School learning programme. “The Enviro School projects involve all pupils, the school and the wider community which has been a key part of its success. Within the classes, on any given day there could be a number of activities happening. “We currently have a squad of about 30 students, ranging in age between 8 and 13, working on different projects and initiatives.”

JuNE 2022

Eskdale School became an Enviro School in 2007 and gained bronze status in 2008. It currently hold a green-gold status

“There are landscape plans for a whole school rebuild and for Environment Day, our squad creates activities and competitions for the school. “The school is currently in the middle of a huge building project. We have had to cut down a number of our shade trees to make way for a new car park. We have a team of seniors working on researching and sourcing funding for new trees to be planted on the field to replace those trees. “We have a group of year 7 and 8 boys working on pest control around the school, investigating which pests we have and setting traps.” Other projects include making a citrus cleaner to sell, bird feeders, rongoa

— kawakawa tea and mosaic pavers that will create a reading nook and fish pond. Additionally, students have been working on an orchard, a nursery, and a propagation shed. Students are continuing to maintain a native garden and manage a worm farm. “Each Wednesday Sandra and I meet with the students who are involved in the current projects. They share with us where they are at and we help guide them. The projects are student-driven and we support students and provide advice and resources if needed.

“The benefits are that we develop eco-literate citizens. The kaupapa of Enviro Schools spreads throughout the community and relationships are formed. Reciprocal benefits are wider than just the school because we are building a sustainable community. “We are empowering children in a time when eco-anxiety is increasingly prevalent. Children can take meaningful action and mix with other schools. I love seeing the student-led projects come to fruition and past pupils can come back and say I was part of that.”

RETIREMENT BY AMY FIFITA

John Reekie and his wife Susan set up an organic fig orchard as something to do in their leisure years resulting in the beginnings of Figs Hawke’s Bay in 2011 run just out of Taradale.

“I

was a doctor, and when that came to an end we became orchardists. It was an interesting transition, but it has been fun and interesting. Growing fruit and getting familiar with issues around logistics, markets and labels. It has been fascinating over the years,” says John. “We have a two-hectare property on the outskirts of Taradale. We have been here for 30-plus years, and we used to use our back paddocks for our children, who would do horse riding and other activities. Once the children had left home, it was a matter of what to do with the back hectare. “In 2011, we decided on starting a fig orchard as a retirement project. We investigated what sort of crops we needed.

“We wanted to do the work ourselves. We needed a compact crop, and we wanted to be organic, so we needed a crop that didn’t require a lot of chemicals. We are now BioGro certified. “Figs were a fairly unique crop and not many people were growing them. It was interesting, and our property is on an old Tūtaekurī riverbed, which suited them. “Being retired, we didn’t want them to grow like trees. We espaliered them along horizontal wires, so we can walk between the rows picking through the uprights as they grow. “It is different, and figs grow vigorously to three or four metres tall — we didn’t want to be up on ladders. It has worked really well, and I’m only aware of us doing

it in this way. It is a Japanese style of growing figs.” “Hawke’s Bay has long summer days with high heat units, figs like

that to make a longer picking season. We grew some figs over a couple of years, and they grew. We planted 500 trees.

John and Susan sell their figs to organic distributors in Auckland and Palmerston North — Ceres Organics, Purefresh Organics and Chantal Organics. “It takes three years to grow a crop to capacity, and there are not many figs grown commercially. Some people who grow them sell them at farmers’ markets. We are a bit bigger than that with a market opportunity to sell to supermarkets and restaurants. John and Susan grow the Brunoro Black fig variety that is durable, desirable,

and it is easy to pack. It is a dessert fig that has a red pulp and black skin with a red pulp inside. “I don’t come from an agricultural basis — it was a new avenue to explore. Throughout the year, I do weed maintenance using the weedeater, stem pruning in July, new bud selection in November, then regular thinning of overgrowth. “The last task in February before picking starts in March is a summer tip prune to

The figs can

absorb the water; they can split and get mould or fungal infections. “Figs have a high sap volume and leak white sap because it is a member of the rubber family. It causes dermatitis, so we wear coveralls and gloves and it can be quite hot. “It’s been exciting establishing an orchard, and growing is half of it, but selling it is the other half. The family has been involved and come over to help us when it is busy, which is nice. It has been good for us.”

A top co-educational world Once a necessity and now a preference, students thrive on the academic, sporting, cultural, service and leadership opportunities made possible by boarding at school.

At Whanganui Collegiate, celebrating diverse learning is at the forefront

Students will tell you that their education house is more than where they stay — it quickly becomes a connection for life. With four boys’ houses and two girls’ houses, Whanganui Collegiate School is the leading co-educational boarding and day school in the lower North Island. “Boys and girls think, problem-solve, and react differently in social situations; therefore, they learn from each other’s differences,” says headmaster Wayne Brown. “At this school, boys and girls learn to support each other, to work together, and as a result, are well equipped for life after college — it is a co-educational world.” All students require quality and personalised teaching. At Whanganui Collegiate, celebrating diverse learning is at the forefront of what we do,

focussing on empowering students with the academic, social and personal skills required to study and achieve. “More importantly, Whanganui Collegiate is where families are united,” says Brown. Parents can support all their children, in the same weekend, at the same school. Thus, the family structure is strengthened through the critical years of secondary schooling — developing a child of promise to a young adult of great character. A ride on the wild side When you sign up for a week-long ride around the southernmost point of the North Island, you are treated to wild scenery, wild food and wild people pulled together in an elegant and comfortable package that delivers more than most people would ever expect.

Experience New Zealand’s greatest new ride with Green Jersey Explorer Tours

New Zealand’s greatest new ride is the Remutaka, Palliser and Tora, starting and finishing at Martinborough Wine Village. You will experience fine dining and fine accommodation, while meeting a collection of characters as you pass through private farmland made accessible exclusively to Green Jersey Explorer Tours. On your first evening, you are welcomed to Wairarapa with po ˉwhiri at a local marae. Mana whenua acknowledge your presence and provide their blessing as we pass through their rohe. You will also be told the history of this place through the lens of iwi Ma ˉori. Your journey across the Remutaka Rail Trail from Upper Hutt finishes with dinner at the Whiteswan Country Hotel in Greytown. During this day of riding, you will cross two dramatic suspension bridges. One, the recently completed Tauherenikau Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in New Zealand — it is firmly tied to the adjacent rail bridge. Cycling across Palliser Ridge is a rare pleasure, meeting the farmers and seeing their paddock to plate products, talking about a future-focussed farming philosophy. It is not unusual for discussion to turn to topics like farm succession and capital structures when a group of like-minded individuals find themselves together.

Quickly, a group’s attention turns to crayfish, pa ˉua, Pilsner and Pinot after a day riding the Palliser Bay Coast and visiting the Putangirua Pinnacles. John Priest (JP) is ready to entertain at the Waimeha Camping and cabins. Fun and games are assured. The ride from Ngawi to Tora is another rare treat and is fully guided. You find yourself in a remote, wild coastal area, with the odd fence to clamber over, stream to cross, and a huge amount of history to discover and learn about. Two nights are spent at the Tora Cookhouse, one of the original Tora Coastal Walk accommodations. Riders choose whether to relax during a day in Tora, go for a ride, walk or enjoy an Italian Cooking class and night sky experience. Tora and Jenny Boyne will show up and say g’day. They are two local legends and love to chat about how life on the edge (of New Zealand) is. A final backroad ride into Martinborough completes the five night, six day experience of a lifetime. This adventure is suitable for most riders who are experienced off road riders on moderate terrain. Visit greenjersey.co.nz/remutakapalliser-tora-6-day. Tours from $1,950pp (group price). One of the most rewarding things I do is to hear stories from clients. I have an older client who was healthy but had low energy and felt flat despite no medical reasons. I had started her on a programme that involved three supplements: A winter Vitamin D booster to lift her immune responses, some Omega 3 fish oil to reduce inflammation and most importantly my multi-antioxidant, multimineral, multivitamin supplement. She reported her energy levels were steadily rising and felt so much better in herself. My standard advice is that if you feel unwell you should get a medical checkup. If there is no particular medical reason for feeling low in energy we then turn our attention to micro-nutrients; the minerals, vitamins and antioxidants that are responsible for maintaining the health of our cells. As I often repeat, ‘a healthy cell is a healthy body’. When we improve the health of cells, we improve the health of the tissue comprising those cells. In the case of my client, I suspect that we helped the processes that

Secondly, we need to protect our energy systems with antioxidants. The list of micronutrients needed for this is long. My multi-nutritional supplement has more than 50 ingredients, and most of these play some part in energy. Calling Hawke’s Bay home by Amy Fifita

Once you are calm from the busyness of moving, take a breath and explore the areas of your life that should not go uncatered for — medical needs, education and entertainment. Setting up a home in a new region comes with many emotions and activities. Amongst the hill country, wineries and beaches, Hawke’s Bay has two closelyquartered main hubs with all that is required for sustaining a healthy lifestyle. The two main cities are Napier and Hastings, and the smaller localities such as Havelock North, Wairoa, Clive, Waipukarau and Waipawa. The larger population centres of Napier, Hastings and Havelock North have many doctors and pharmacies to cater for your health needs. Along or within reach of State Highway 2 are Tuki Tuki Medical Centre in Waipukurau, the many medical centres in Napier and Hastings, and the Queen Street Practice in Wairoa. Dotted along the east coast are educational facilities catering for all age groups. On the southern end of Hawke’s Bay is Flemington, a 20-minute drive from Waipukurau — the northern-most school is Frasertown School. Napier and Hastings provide preschool, primary and secondary learning; other educational facilities are available throughout the region. For tertiary education, the Eastern Institute of

Technology, in Napier, which has more than 150 learning opportunities. After getting everyday living needs sorted, it’s a good time to relax and explore your new area. Hawke’s Bay has a plethora of destinations like wine and cycle trails, but it is advisable not to do both at once. For admirers of art deco, there are plenty of architectural examples in Napier, and a festival is held in the era’s honour. Following the 1931 earthquake, the city had to rebuild at this time. Tickets for Winter Deco 2022 public tickets have opened for the July 15 to 17 event and will be held at the Art Deco Centre in Napier. Cape Kidnappers is an idyllic spot that holds many stories. Named in Māori, Te Matua a Māui — Māui’s fish hook, after the myth of the demigod hooking the North Island from the ocean depths. Cape Kidnappers’ European name originates from the times of Captain James Cook. When Cook arrived at the peninsula, Māori attempted to take the Tahitian cabin boy perceived to be imprisoned. The captain shot at the canoe, and the boy escaped. A golf course

WELCOME TO THE REGION

Outdoor opportunities by Amy Fifita

Hawke’s Bay is full of vast ravines, fertile valleys and plentiful rivers that offer a chance to indulge in the land and what it has to provide. Part of a region is the land and waters in it. It is not just the townships and people, although they are a vital portion of what makes an area. Hawke’s Bay has many outdoor escapes and opportunities for the locals to enjoy. There are plenty of beaches along the Bay’s coastline. Some are great for saltwater fishing or swimming if you fancy a midwinter dip or surf, and others with scenic views and campsites. Starting at the top of the region there are Mahanga and Pukenui Beaches. The row of beaches ends at Te Paerahi Beach, close to Pōrangahau. Further inland is a range of rivers that home schools of trout you can catch. For those who would like to learn the skill of fly fishing, Joseph Utiera offers a free tour of the bountiful rivers — information is found on the Tūtaekurī fly fishing Facebook page. Mohaka Rafting organises trout fishing trips also and offer trips from one to five days. There is a chance for a thrill with this Te Pōhue business that provides a whitewater experience. There are different rafting expeditions according to skill level, and it is a chance to take in the scenic beauty of the Mohaka River.

Enjoy the assets of the Hawke’s Bay region with experiences for all ages and abilities

Scenic walks and hiking trails are throughout the region. There are plenty

of low-impact walking trails like the Tangoio and Te Ana Falls trails that

can be accessed from the Tangioi Fall car park. For those who prefer a challenge, there are hikes such as the Lake Waikaremoana Track. It takes three to four days to complete the track, and it is advised to check the Ngai Tūhoe website about Te Urerewa access and the Department of Conservation website for closures and track updates. There is a range of mountain bike parks such as Pan Pac Mountain Bike Park, Ranui Farm, Te Mata Peak Park, Tukituki Trails and Gum Tree Mountain Bike Park and Wairoa Mountain Bike Park. It pays to check the websites for information about access requirements, opening months, age restrictions and costs. For those who enjoy golfing, Cape Kidnappers has a course designed by renowned golf architect Tom Doak. It also boasts a 44th ranking in the top 100 international golf courses and second in the New Zealand charts. There are courses for all age groups, and there are other experiences close by to take advantage of. The options to get your feet wet or walking are endless in Hawke’s Bay, with various experiences at different levels of difficulty and involvement.

Above your head by Amy Fifita

Attics are often overlooked as usable space; winter is an opportune time to do some indoor projects to improve your home. The attic doesn’t have to be the scary darkness to forget. It can be a space to store boxes and furniture, hang out, entertain or make it into an extra bedroom — the space is already there. There are a few considerations before you start the upstairs transformation, though. High-pitched roofs are ideal for this type of renovation — there is more floor space and headroom. Make sure you have the correct building requirements and have consent to work on the attic. As nice as having an extra room is, it won’t turn out well if you saw off a supporting beam. Accessibility is another consideration. Stairways or ladders are better than standing on a chair to get to the elusive space. Talk to a designer about how to utilise the attic and what it would take for you to be satisfied with the end result. Windows may be added and insulation is another idea to keep the space comfortable for those using it. Builders are the best people to talk to about the practical side of the project. They have the knowledge and experience to convert your attic into usable space and all the consents involved. You might want to convert it for a storage space. The professionals can transform the

Depending on what you choose to do, an attic conversion can take from one week to three months, depending on how grand your design is and what its purpose is. It is a similar notion for pricing. The more elaborate your plans are, the more expensive it will be, although part of that is what extra work needs to be done. It also depends on what it will take to alter your attic into the space you want. Aside from the benefit of having a new room, the use of the room could increase the value of your property. It also maximises the space you have available to you without extending your home. Think about the possibilities of how to use the space you already have above your head and talk to the right professional about how to achieve that. It could even be the additional room to relocate your moody teenager so you can use their room as an office. Create a space you want to be in and convert your attic from a dusty nook to a comfortable room

space into a dry and safe home for your boxes of paperwork, antique furniture and keepsakes. You can be creative with the added room and make it into a fun comfort area or practicable room. The ideas

are for you to decide, and the rest can easily be achieved with a certified builder and tradespeople that are required.

We operate curtainsiders, tippers and flatdecks to meet all your general and bulk cartage requirements.

New Zealand now making hydrogen fuel by Andy Bryenton

Hydrogen for fuel cells is being produced in New Zealand, with a facility near Mokai, in the Taupo region now online and manufactured for the private market. Known as Halcyon, the hydrogen venture is a joint one, split half and half between the Tūaropaki Trust and the Obayashi Corporation of Japan. It was opened in December last year and is now turning renewable electricity into transport-fuel grade hydrogen.

“Tūaropaki has sustainability as one of its guiding principles, and the green hydrogen project, with the involvement of Obayashi and their sustainable development goals, is a perfect fit,” says trust CEO Steve Murray. “Ultimately, we are looking at a national hydrogen supply chain that includes transportation, site storage and refuelling infrastructure. Transport emissions in New Zealand contribute around 25% of our total emissions, so targeting reduction in transport, and in particular heavy transport, will make a major contribution to carbon reduction. Hydrogen is a solution that is ready to implement now,” Murray says. The hydrogen producers are putting faith in their product, too, with the purchase of Hyundai’s NEXO vehicles for their company fleet. The NEXO hydrogenpowered vehicle utilises a hydrogen fuel cell which acts as a miniature power station under the hood. The only output is pure water. As the Mokai power station is geothermal, this means true zero-carbon driving is achievable. Hyundai is not the only automaker interested in a hydrogen future. While bridging the gap with electric and hybrid vehicles, Toyota has also developed hydrogen-powered

NEXO hydrogen vehicles are out on the roads representing Halcyon, a local producer of hydrogen fuel

vehicles like the Mirai, a car that has already sold 11,000 units in Europe. In New Zealand, a recent groupshare agreement between eight major businesses, including the Warehouse Group and Air New Zealand, has put Mirai models in the hands of corporate fleet drivers. Similarly, the Tūaropaki-branded NEXOs on the road in the central North Island will serve to promote the idea of hydrogen as the fuel of tomorrow.

Moreover, because it uses electricity and seawater to create hydrogen, the process has even been posited as a replacement industry for Tiwai Point, should aluminium production cease there due to market constraints. Hydrogen, unlike battery power, is quick to refuel and banishes range anxiety but currently lacks pervasive infrastructure, something Halcyon is aiming to change.

The day the motor car arrived by Andy Bryenton

New Zealand was always one of the final frontiers for the automobile, as a nation surrounded by sea and covered in forests and farms. It was 110 years ago that the car proved that it was here to stay, and overtook the horse as the ultimate form of land transport in what had been, up until then, a very maritime nation. In 1912 an expedition set out from Wellington to Auckland, attempting for the first time to forge a path north through the King Country by road in a Model T Ford. The usual method for tackling New Zealand’s muddy roads and wild wilderness in those days was on horseback or even by a sledge pulled by bullocks. To go from city to city, a ship was usually the best way to travel. However, writer Arthur Chorlton, photographer Ernest Gilling and driver Harry Richards were determined to prove the worth of the motor car. They set out from the Wellington post office and soon passed from the land of internal combustion. ‘Taihape was reached at 4.15pm that day, after an uneventful run of 1,412 miles at an average speed of 22 miles an hour, which was not bad with the old Paekakariki Hill and roads as they were then,’ wrote Chorlton. ‘From now on to Te Kuiti we were in totally un-motored country, except for a doctor’s single-cylinder De Dion in Taumarunui,

19

of the automobile had now seen one in action, and those who had dismissed it as a sporting toy for the wealthy saw its utility. Arthur Chorlton went on to design an amphibious Model T before the first world war and enlisted as a driver in that conflict, driving Model Ts in the Sinai Desert. It would take many years before roads caught up with motoring technology. Still, for an era between the world wars, the example set by the intrepid trio of Chorlton, Gillings and Richards inspired hundreds of other Kiwis to get behind the wheel.

horses to pull the Model T from metredeep mires all taxed the expedition. Eight days and 13 hours later the vehicle rolled down Queen Street, completing a road trip that can now be managed in a single day. The trip caused a sensation, as people who had previously only heard
