EXCELLENCE IN DERMATOLOGY

It was the 24-year-old Foley Farming Enterprises staff member’s second regional final and he said he was humbled by the win, especially knowing the calibre of competitors in the field, but all the hard work had definitely paid off. “It’s still sinking in. I really can’t believe it!” Patrick used the experience of previous competitions to his advantage, playing to his strengths and taking home all technical challenges including the AGMARDT agribusiness exam, the Massey University agri-growth interview and the Meridian Energy agriknowledge quiz. The Dannevirke farmer, also performed well in the practical component of the final and will now go on to represent the east coast at the 50th Anniversary FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final in July. With his wedding in January,

Patrick had recently returned from his honeymoon, with wife, Isabelle, joking ‘it was all study’ ‘but now it was totally worth it!’. For winning the final Patrick took home $12,500 in prizes, including a Honda XR150 motorbike. Second place went to 25-year-old Hugh Abbiss, also of Foley Farming Enterprises. The sheep and beef farmer in this, his second regional final, taking home the coveted Ravensdown agriskills challenge. Having both returned home to the east coast from the Aorangi region, Robbie Hill took home third place and Richard Falloon won the highly contested Agri-sports Challenge to round out a success event in Masterton. The 50th Grand Final of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year will take place on July 5 with seven grand finalists from around New Zealand.

Helping Karamu water quality The improvement of water quality in the Karamu is one of the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s ‘hot spot’ funded projects and fencing a section of the Paritua Stream that runs through farmland at Bridge Pa is another step to help improve water quality in the Karamu Catchment. The Paritua-Karewarewa subcatchment covers the largest area (12,005ha) of the 11 subcatchments, which contribute to the Karamu. It covers more than 20 per cent of the Karamu catchment (51,462ha), which drains the Heretaunga Plains and surrounding ranges, including stormwater from urban centres. The stream flows across the middle of a large paddock owned by Malcolm Campbell who grazes stock there. It is part of the unconfined aquifer (as surface water flows from and back into the aquifer in various sections) and is augmented by water from the Ngaruroro River near Roy’s Hill. To keep the stock away from the water, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is working with Mr Campbell to install twowire electrified fences about 3-5 metres from each side of the stream. “Fencing both sides of a stream is an effective way to keep the cattle out of the water, which has been a contentious issue for residents using the stream further down, and is an example of good land management,” says Antony Rewcastle, HBRC senior open spaces development officer. “Fencing off streams is being recognised across the country as an important step for landowners to improve water quality, and Hawke’s Bay landowners may be required to this

under future plan changes.” Over the last few years, HBRC and Mangaroa marae have enhanced part of the stream, including the planting of around 10,000 native trees, on public land adjacent to the marae downstream of Raukawa Road Bridge, to improve the water and stream surrounds. This part of the stream includes a swimming hole that is popular with the local children, so fencing the upstream section through the paddock will help improve water quality for Bridge Pa residents and marae. The paddock is a flood zone, so planting and management has had

to be carefully considered. Weeping willow poles will be planted at 30 metre intervals within the riparian zone to provide shade for the water, improve habitat and reduce weed growth; native plants may be added later. Mr Campbell has redecked the bridge across the stream, one that he originally built as a young man. This will give cattle access to both sides of the paddock, and to the stock water trough on the south side of the stream.

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

BY ANN MORGAN Hunting is an adventure, as well as a way to help cull the pest animals that cause devastation not just to land but also young animals and property.

“I

grew up on a farm until I was eight years old and then moved into Blairlogie, a forestry township near Tinui,” says pig hunter Sadie Waru. “I trained to be a dog groomer and have always loved dogs and every aspect of being with them. My partner, Briggs Pilkington, works for DOC as a project supervisor — he started out as a trapper. “I like to have piglets on our property because we have pig dogs and it is good for them to see piglets are friends and not a target to hunt.

“From the first bail up of a pig that I saw with Briggs I knew this was the life for me, and I appreciate it with every ounce of my being. I had never really considered hunting as a lifestyle option but a pack of dogs can change the way you see the world around you. “I am not sure whom I fell in love with first — Briggs or the dogs. You may think that is a dramatic statement, but it is a for safety and we make sure to use them if we split up. We also have Garmin gps units and can track each other and the dogs, and they have an emergency setting.

“We know someone that has had to use the emergency call. It is important to make sure it is charged and that you have spare batteries, and always let people know where you are going and your expected home time.” The meat gets butchered professionally and is often given to friends, family or the community. “We are part of the pig hunting club and we get approached from people needing food, including maraes for funerals. We join together and donate as

much as we can. It is about supporting the community, and when people need something to eat the hunting club helps out. “I love the peace in the bush — you hear the birds and your dogs walking along, it is beautiful. It can clear your head and give you clarity to problems you may have. “A lot of female hunters I meet love being out there getting their own food for their family. HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

Budou-Senshin by Ann Morgan

‘Grape-master’ Tetsuya Higuchi from Yamanashi Japan is a third-generation specialist table grape grower, growing grapes here in New Zealand through the ‘Budou’ grape project.

“A

fter study in Japan I worked different jobs, but decided to follow in my family’s footsteps growing table grapes. My father insisted I didn’t have to, but I wanted to continue the family success,” says Tetsuya. “I enhanced our system to supply the high end market. Within a few years we had great success in the Japanese fruit parlours. One bunch would weigh 700g selling at retail for NZ$70-$160.” Tetsuya came to the Southern Hemisphere, looking to fill a gap in the market after growing in Japan for more than 20 years. “Budou means grape — like the word Nashi means pear and Sika means deer in Japanese. Our focus is introducing the industry here producing a very high quality product,” he says.

“It takes three years from planting a new vine before you can start harvesting quality grapes.” Tetsuya still has his business in Japan producing approximately 16 different varieties. “The grapes come in all different types, shapes and colours. We grow them differently to most people in New Zealand, I planted my first grapes in Hawke’s Bay four years ago.” Tetsuya came to the region because he felt it was the right place to be successful. “I ‘could feel it in the air’ when I visited. The soil condition and climate is perfect and Hawke’s Bay is one of the best wine grape areas in the country; because it is hot in the day and cool at night — this combination produces beautiful fruit,” he says. Tetsuya plans to introduce more Japanese grape varieties and get other growers involved in his project Budou grapes come in all different types, shapes and colours are growing well in Hawke’s Bay

“I found a local table grape grower and leased part of his property. We purchased young plants of the Japanese ‘Kyoho’ grape from a nursery here and started our ‘Budou’ project. “We had to wait to see if they would be successful and over three years we expanded and leased more land from him.” Tetsuya then changed it from the traditional trellis style to a pergola system. Growing on a pergola allows the leaves maximum sun providing goodness to the grapes. “We put special paper bags on each bunch and use umbrellas to protect them from the different weather trends, bugs and excess sprays. These also stop the birds landing on them — they love the colours and eat the whole lot if they can — we must be growing some nice tasty grapes.” In Japan the family grow some varieties, which can grow to golf ball size. “We are still researching which fertilisers are suitable in New Zealand to help the growth. Success is also about irrigation, pruning and branch placement. Thinning the grapes will help make a bigger fruit. For Kyoho, one bunch can be 400 grams with each

grape growing to 12-13 grams.” Some grapes get trapped inside the bunch and aren’t as flavoursome and thinning helps rectify this. “We also produce seedless grapes by using a method to make the plant think that the seed has already been produced. “We are successfully selling at the local farmers’ market and Farro Fresh in Auckland, as well as few local stores.” Each bunch is presented in a special individual bag, because in Japan, some food is treated as a seasonal gift that you present to someone special. “For thousands of years Asian cultures have shown people they are important and appreciated by sending gifts of fruit. If you are going to give a gift it must be excellent, like our grapes,” says Tetsuya. “At times, we have two to three varieties and each has a different flavour and smell. For example, New York Muscat has red small sweet berries, White Diamond is aromatic, and Buffalo is black with an intense rich flavour and tangy dry skin. “I am looking at introducing more Japanese varieties and plan to get others exclusively grown by us as there

is potential for ‘Budou’ grapes with export opportunities to Japan and other Asian countries. Less than one per cent of grape growers in New Zealand are producing table grapes — most are growing wine grapes. Company administrator, Yumeri Katsura, met Tetsuya through a mutual friend and now works full-time for BudouSenshin Ltd. “I am also from Japan, but have lived in New Zealand for 20 years. I have a horticultural background and now help to manage the company here,” she says. Tetsuya spends half of the year

in Hawkes Bay, whilst his wife and son manage the business in Japan. “We are looking for potential growers to embrace our wonderful project and create a new industry right here in New Zealand. Others have tried to produce the seedless grapes, but few have succeeded. “Success depends on the variety, climate and weather. Being seedless means the grape itself gets bigger, as all the growth goes into the flesh not the seed. Ours are 99.9 per cent seedless — Tetsuya says if you find one with seeds you are the ‘lucky’ one.”

Dairy Industry Award winners

The 2018 Hawkes Bay Wairarapa Dairy Industry Awards Share Farmer of the Year winners say entering the competition has been excellent for networking, growth and knowledge of their business. “It’s been a huge benefit to receive feedback from the judges on ways we can improve our business,” say Thomas and Jennifer Read. The couple were named the 2018 Hawkes Bay Wairarapa Share Farmers of the Year at the region’s annual awards. The other major winners were Gerard Boerjan, the 2018 Hawkes Bay Wairarapa Dairy Manager of the Year, and Brock Cumming, the 2018 Hawkes Bay Wairarapa Dairy Trainee of the Year. Thomas and Jennifer are currently 50-50 sharemilk 260 cows for Shane and Lydia Read on their 91.5ha property at Dannevirke. Second placegetter was Adam Vollebregt. Adam is currently contract milking 550 cows on Tahora Dairy Ltd’s Featherston farm and third placegetters in the Share Farmer competition were Mark and Jenny Rosacker, who have improved their mean calving date by 15 days since taking over the herd. The New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards are supported by national sponsors: Westpac, DairyNZ, DeLaval, Ecolab, Federated Farmers, Fonterra, Honda Motorcycles, LIC, Meridian

Energy, New Zealand Farm Source and Ravensdown, along with industry partner Primary ITO.

Masterton farm manager, Nicholas Verhoek, placed second and manages Selwyn and Jenny McLachlan’s 210ha property, and was the region’s 2013 Dairy Trainee of the Year. Third place went to Sumit Kamboj. Sumit is farm manager on Andrew and Monika Arbuthnott’s Eketahuna property

“The seminars were a popular aspect of the expos in 2016 and 2017, with attendees really enjoying the variety of speakers on offer,” said expo director, Dave Martin.

Carterton 2IC, Harry Eschenbach, was second and Dannevirke 2IC, Matthew McDougall, was third.

“We have worked hard this year to achieve the same diversity of presenters and we really encourage farmers to embrace this rare opportunity to be in the same room as so many experts in their fields.” Acting land manager for Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, Nathan Heath, said the council is looking forward to the event again this year, and is proud to be a strategic sponsor. “We believe this has the potential to be a compulsory activity on the annual farming calendar,” he said. Mr Heath will be presenting on fit for purpose tree planting as the way forward for hill country farming.

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE Start with a solid foundation

Arrive Alive...

Building is essentially a task that begins from the ground up, and the very foundations of a house or home are vital. But foundations also need to be revisited, as in the case of some rural buildings that may have started life in pioneer days. Over time piles can rot away, causing them to fail. If the house was built in an era that used totara piles, an examination will soon determine if repiling has happened. New piles are either concrete or tanalised H5 pine and are easy to spot. Make sure to check that all the piles have been replaced. It is quite common that only a few piles are new, often just around the edge of the house. Sometimes all the piles move, but more often, different piles move to different extents. This causes the house to twist, bow and crack, resulting in damage. The piles may have stopped moving, or may be continuing to move — this all depends on the cause. If you are planning renovations, it pays to start with firm foundations or you are going to end up with an inferior result. This involves digging new piles down to a firm base and attempting to realign the house on this new foundation. To establish if there’s a problem and to what extent, ask the experts. A house

w.harrispumps.co.nz

inspector is a good start. Repiling is a major job and different repilers use different methods — some cut holes in the floor for access under the house and some lift the entire house on jacks to make room to work. Repiling requires a building permit — other additions and changes to the

Don’t Drink and Drive

house can be added to the same permit, so it pays to make plans in advance.

Design for the colder times Autumn is unfolding, soon to give way to winter and a reminder that a warm, energy efficient home gets plenty of sun and is sheltered from prevailing winds — so the choice of site is a key decision. Find out how much sun a site gets at different times of the year, by using an app like Sun Seeker on your smartphone or tablet — good advice from EnergywiseNZ. On clear winter days, the sun sends around 500 watts of heat through each square metre of unshaded north-facing window. A home designed to harness the sun’s free warmth is placed on the sunniest part of the section to access the most sun into the main living areas, with service areas on the south side. Trap in the free heat from the sun using thermal mass like a concrete floor, exposed to the sun, so it soaks up heat during the day and releases it when temperatures drop at night. Select appropriately sized and positioned windows: moderately large on the north-facing side of the house, smaller on the east and west sides, and smallest on the south side. Think about how much space you need on a day-to-day basis. Smaller houses are cheaper to build, easier to heat and use a lot less energy. The more complex a home’s shape is, the more floor, wall and ceiling area it has to lose heat through. Simple house designs — for example, compact rectangular shapes and multilevel

homes — have less external surface area, so are easier and cheaper to keep warm. Good design, materials and construction will enable your home to retain heat for your comfort and lower heating bills. The important factors

are: high levels of insulation in ceiling, walls and underfloor, well in excess of minimum building code requirements. Good design will cut your home’s heating needs, but it still pays to make the heating system is as energy

efficient as possible. There are lots of log burners, pellet fires, heat pumps and flued gas heaters on the market, either as central heating systems or as individual heaters to heat areas of your house.

Forestry amendments proposed Investments in sensitive land involving forestry rights will be brought into the scope of the Overseas Investment Act. The changes have been proposed by Associate Finance Minister, David Parker, and would introduce a lighthanded ‘checklist’ screening regime, which will make it easier for overseas investors to gain approval to buy forestry rights than if they were subject to the current screening regime. Overseas buyers of existing freehold and leasehold forestry land, who already face screening, would also be able to use the light-handed checklist. “The changes need to be made before the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans Pacific Partnership comes into force, or we will lose the chance to screen such sales forever,” Mr Parker says. “It will then be possible for future governments to tighten or further loosen the criteria applied to forestry

investment, if required. Any forest can in effect be purchased as a forestry registration right. “This means that a screening regime that covers only freehold and leasehold is ineffective. “Forestry rights can grant a high degree of control over large parcels of land for multiple rotations over long periods of time, so it is important they are included in the regime. There is no evidence that the change will have a substantial effect on commercial values.” The forestry sector is reliant on overseas investment with 70 per cent of plantation trees in overseas ownership. Under the proposed changes, investors buying up to 1,000 hectares of forestry rights each year will not need consent, but purchases above that level would be screened. This would apply to

PROVIDERS OF INDEPENDENT AND PROFESSIONAL FOREST MANAGEMENT SERVICES:

all forestry rights, including bare land planting. Investors would likely pass a new screening test for freehold and leasehold bare land, given they can demonstrate benefit to New Zealand from converting land into forestry,

providing jobs and advancing the Government’s ‘one billion trees’ policy. The amendments have been submitted to the Finance and Expenditure Select Committee and the Government will also be consulting further with Maori.

Dairy cows are responsible for about a quarter of New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions. That’s the cost of supplying the world with dairy products. But it doesn’t have to be. Planting forests is an easy way to offset greenhouse gas emissions from livestock. An average dairy farmer could plant nearly two hectares a year in radiata pine to totally offset the gases their cows make. It wouldn’t even have to be on their own land. The farmers profit from the trees at harvest – and then replant. There’s a lot of win in this package.

Managing forestry risks

13

POSTDRIVERS

Those working in forestry understand there are risks and a safe, productive and profitable forestry operation is one where workplace risks are identified and well managed. Managing risks is also a legal requirement and risk management is about knowing what hazards create risks in your workplace and then managing them. That means taking reasonably practicable steps to eliminate the risks, or if you can’t eliminate a risk, taking reasonably practicable steps to minimise it. Key things to remember about managing hazards and their risks in forestry workplaces include businesses carry most of the responsibility (the legal duty) to keep workers and others healthy and safe. You need to understand and focus on your critical risks — the ones most likely to cause serious injury or death. These will be different for different types of businesses. The law identifies ‘particular risks’ that must be managed in a specific way and how a business manages a risk should be in proportion to how bad any injuries or damage could be, and the likelihood of the risk happening. Prioritise eliminating a risk — if that’s not possible, have strong effective minimisation controls. Common controls can usually be found and used for common risks. Consult the forestry ACoP or other guidance, or ask

another forestry operator what they do. Different businesses involved in an operation must all consult, cooperate and coordinate with each other, where they have a shared duty. This includes workplace risks. This is a legal requirement, as well as good practice. Make sure you are familiar with all known site-specific risks — what could go wrong on your site and set-up; and

follow a good process for managing any variations or changes throughout the day that could make work unsafe. Remember the morning tailgate meeting is a great place to start. Monitor and review health and safety systems and processes from time to time to make sure they are fit for purpose and effective, especially after an accident or when planning or doing a new task.

Forestry exports to grow Forestry exports are expected to grow more than 11 per cent this year according to the Ministry for Primary Industries. “This is supported by record harvest levels and ongoing demand for New Zealand logs from China,” said MPI’s policy and trade acting deputy director general, Jarred Mair. “The Government’s One Billion Trees Programme is another catalyst for investment and changing land use, primarily through increased replanting rates and new production forest area.” New Zealand’s overall primary industry exports are forecast to rise nearly 11 per cent in the year ending June 2018 to $42.2 billion. This would be the largest annual increase since 2014, according to the Ministry for Primary Industries’ latest quarterly update. “Our situation and outlook for primary industries report shows export revenue across all of the sectors has been incredibly strong over the past year, particularly for dairy, meat, and forestry,” says Mr Mair. “Dairy export revenue is expected to increase by more than 14 per cent in 2018, due to a recovery in prices over the past 12 to 18 months. It is also the result of more milk being processed into higher value products such as infant formula. “At the same time, the latest numbers show that dairy cow numbers have fallen

since 2016. In addition, global red meat prices are expected to increase export revenue in the meat and wool sector by nearly 10 per cent in 2018. High returns and new policies are likely to create investment opportunities across the primary industries says Mr Mair. “For example, high horticulture returns are driving investments in productivity and competition for suitable land. MPI’s Situation and outlook for primary industries report provides a snapshot and forecast for New Zealand’s major primary sectors.

A change in manuka honey definition

The Ministry for Primary Industries has reissued the General Requirements for Bee Products Export Notice. The change means that the legal claim challenging the definition by New Zealand Beekeeping Inc has been resolved. “Late last week, as part of its legal claim, New Zealand Beekeeping Inc provided additional information about the impact of the definition on multifloral honey. We were also presented with a summary of new analysed test results from an industry science group,” says MPI’s deputy director-general regulation and assurance, Bryan Wilson. “This information showed that the definition for identifying multifloral manuka honey was initially set too conservatively and would exclude legitimate multifloral honey. “We hope the industry will see this as a signal of MPI’s ongoing commitment to a collaborative science programme focused on continuous improvement to the science that supports the definition of manuka honey.” The revised Notice adjusts the level of a chemical marker known as 2 MAP from greater than or equal to 5mg/kg,

Bryan Wilson, MPI’s deputy director-general regulation and assurance

to greater than or equal to 1mg/kg for the definition for multifloral manuka honey. There is no change to the definition for monofloral manuka honey, which remains at equal or greater than 5mg/ kg for 2 MAP. The implementation date of the notice remains February 5. More information on the manuka honey definition can be found on MPI’s website — www.mpi.govt.nz/growingand-har vesting/honey-and-bees/ manuka-honey.

Touring unplugged by Andy Bryenton

Kia managed to shock and surprise everybody last year with the arrival of the speedy, slick and dynamically impressive Stinger, their answer to the best of Europe’s grand tourers. Now they’re back to surprise the world again, with a touring machine of a whole different stripe. Enter the Kia Niro, a combination of some of the hottest trends in modern motoring, and a definite one to watch. When looking at the Niro without context, it’s easy to assume that the Korean automakers simply wanted something small, compact and sports utility shaped to fit into their range between the quirky Soul and the popular Sportage. In an era when even Range Rover has a ‘crossover’ and the Toyota CH-R is the new Corolla, it makes sense. But that’s not what the Niro is all about. Sure, it’s got that nifty ‘fun size’ sports utility shape, the same voluminous cabin with clever cubbies and storage spaces, the same higher driving position and nice safety features. But it’s also a plugin hybrid. With Elon Musk at the door and the mass production of Tesla cars at hand — soon — the addition of a crossover hybrid hits all the zeitgeist buttons. This particular combination of internal combustion and voltage power means that you can drive for 55 kilometres

SAFETY FIRST

without using a drop of the go-juice, and even on the open highway you’ll sip a mere 1.4 litres per 100 kilometres. That’s a sum measured in the change under the seat. However, the Niro doesn’t fall into that other trap of frugal hybrids — it’s not boring. In eco mode it may seem a touch leisurely, but hit sport and all 140 horsepower comes out to play. It’s no supercar, but it’s grin-inducing, especially as the electric motor joins in much like an old school turbo used to, kicking in a surge of added fizz. The dual clutch six-speed box keeps it smooth, while the twin power systems do their thing. Arriving here in March, the plug-in Niro will join a pair of full-time hybrids in what is becoming a very interesting Kia range indeed. For those who are more concerned with the cutting edge than the prestige of a label, this is where the smart money sits.
